Quote
Jason Bourne has a tormented past, which continues to influence him throughout his lifetime. Jason Bourne is but one of many aliases used by David Webb. Webb is a career foreign service officer and a specialist in Far Eastern affairs. Before the events in The Bourne Identity, Webb had a Thai wife named Dao and two children named Joshua and Alyssa in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. Webb's wife and two children were inadvertently killed during the Vietnam War when a fighter plane strayed into Cambodia, dropped two bombs and strafed a spot near the Mekong River. Due to Cambodia's neutrality in the war, every nation disclaimed the plane, and therefore no one took responsibility for the incident. Since he had nothing left, Webb went to Saigon and elected to train for an elite Top Secret Special Forces unit called Medusa, which would remain a Top Secret unit for many years. In Medusa, Webb was known only as Delta One, his code name within the unit.

I predict four things

1. One team gets stabbed in the back
2. They go mental
3. They're probably last like Brian & Ericka
4. They refuse to work with anyone, everyone, ever.

PENANG

The state of PENANG is geographically divided into two sections:

    * Penang Island: an island of 293 square kilometres located in the Straits of Malacca with an estimated population of 745,000 and 24 municipalities; and

    * Province Wellesley (also known as Seberang Perai in Malay): a narrow hinterland of 753 square kilometres on the peninsula across a narrow channel whose smallest width is 4 km (2.5 miles). It is bordered by Kedah in the north (demarcated by the Muda River) and east, and Perak in the south and has an estimated population of 833,000 in 20 municipalities.

The body of water between Penang Island and Province Wellesley is the North Channel to the north of Georgetown and the South Channel to the south of George Town. Penang Island is irregularly shaped, with a granitic, hilly and mostly forested interior, the highest point being Western Hill (part of Penang Hill) at 830 metres above sea level. The coastal plains are narrow; in the northeast they forms a triangular promontory where state capital George Town is located. The topography of Province Wellesley is mostly flat. Butterworth, the main town in Province Wellesley, lies along the Perai River estuary and faces George Town at a distance of 3 km (2 miles) across the channel to the east.

Favorite tourist attractions in Penang are:

Take a trishaw ride or walking tour of the George Town Unesco World Heritage Site!
The trishaw is a cute little peddle-power vehicle that has been around since the days of yore. Decorated with plastic flowers and blinking lights, these are now mainly “tourist mobiles” and are great for going around George Town’s narrow inner city streets.

Sample the popular hawker fare
Penang street food encompasses Chinese, Malay and Indian “fast food”! Eating by the roadside is an experience as you watch locals of all races indulge in their favourite past time – food!

BATU FERRINGHI BEACH
Laze by the scenic Batu Ferringhi beach or take a leisurely stroll along Gurney Drive
With its sandy shores and vast open sea, Batu Ferringhi offers an amazing respite from the hustle and bustle of town. A walk along Gurney Drive invigorates all senses as it boasts of some of Penang’s best street food, shopping mall, and of course, a beautiful promenade!

Take a cable car ride up Penang Hill for the breathtaking view and go on a ferry ride
The Penang Hill funicular train ride in Air Itam is one of the most poplar tourist attractions. The short 30-minute train ride is not-to-be-missed. The famous yellow ferries at Weld Quay were the main mode of transportation between the island and mainland before the Penang Bridge was constructed. The 15-minute ride affords passengers a view of two important heritage buildings – Wisma Yeap Chor Ee and Wisma Kastam, as you head towards the island. Once a thriving maritime port, Weld Quay now houses a bustling bus terminal, ports, clan jetty settlements and restaurants.  The Botanic Gardens has myriad of plants and century-old trees.

Here is a map of the island and western shore of the mainland (note that it can be altered with the control to get a more focused or broader view or moved left or right) and a major features map:

To get from Seychelles to East Asia, Van Munster is correct, as a connection is needed:

EK709 SEZ DXB 0145 0615
EK342 DXB KUL 1030 2125 (note - arrives 2 hours earlier than connection DXB BKK KUL that left Dubai at 0905)

Then there is a wide range of flights from Kuala Lumpur to Penang.

More later, I just need to go and admit at the Hospital. Feeling really ill.

The Amazing Race 16 sighting at Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang Malaysia *Spoiler*:

Remember this sighting ..

Phil spotted in Dubai en route to Malaysia (12/12 EK342 arriving 10:30am); team spotted en route from Kuala Lumpur to Penang (12/14)

found a blog  ...

Scooting Around (http://nohurrycurry.wordpress.com/2009/12/28/scooting-around/)
12/14/09: Penang, Malaysia

We scooted to the Kek Lok Si Temple, which is the biggest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia. Kevin and I aren’t very good at visiting temples, since we usually don’t know anything about them except whatever they say in the brochure they hand out to visitors.

Anyway, the temple seemed nice enough – it was really colorful, which made for some pretty pictures. We spent about half an hour there and were getting ready to leave when Kevin, who was at the front stairs, waved and motioned excitedly for me to come look. “It’s The Amazing Race! And sure enough, it was. Kevin offered up the idea of following the Amazing Race-rs around all day, which I promptly vetoed. I wasn’t going to let us spend our one day in Penang scooting around aimlessly looking for things we couldn’t find.

more at the link above

Had a wonderful reply with more info from Kevin and Zhou from www.nohurrycurry.wordpress.com!!

They write:

Quote
We were about to leave Kekloksi Temple near Penang Hill around 11am on 12/14 when one team and its cameraman and coordinator hopped out of a taxi. A few minutes later two more teams showed up and each team was asking some locals for help. Eventually they all figured out they were in the wrong spot. I was standing next to one of the guys at this point (trying to offer my map but he was talking to a local), and I'm pretty sure they were all supposed to be at Kuan Yin Teng (Goddess of Mercy Temple), but am not 100%. A couple hours later we went to this temple and didn't see any trace of the race.

All we can remember about the teams was that there were three of them - one father/daughter team, one team of two younger guys, and one unknown. (Sending pics for review--peach)

.... They sent a few pics >>>( the last team to leave, since I was too excited that we were watching TAR to take pictures or video up to that point) is the father and daughter.

Unfortunately we didn't get to see a challenge of any sort, but hope this is helpful anyway. Let us know if you need any more information.

Lots more pics starting on page 17 of the locations thread.

Video thanks to Kevin and Zhou from www.nohurrycurry.wordpress.com!!

And I was wondering about the "re". Someone must have mistakenly deleted the beginning of the word. The webmonkeys sure know how to make mistakes (or would those be the pressmonkeys?).

Could this leg be a TBC ?

Probably not since Phil said that there would be 12 legs.  If they actually have an episode that's TBC, the first part would start in the previous leg, which means that this segment would most likely be the conclusion.

Air Seychelles has a flight to Singapore. But I am not sure if it is scheduled.  :duno:
AmazingRace, if you read the prior posts, it is very unlikely that teams will get to Penang connecting in Singapore. The information on flights plus everyting most significant, is included in puddin's excellent summary of all legs at the beginning of the timelines thread. Had you read that, you would have seen this:

EP08: Seychelles to Penang, Malaysia
EVIDENCE: Phil spotted in Dubai en route to Malaysia (12/12 EK342 arriving 10:30am); team spotted en route from Kuala Lumpur to Penang (12/14)

If you want exact flight information, I posted in on another thread , probably spoilers arounnd the end of January and you should be able to sily find it.

It is unlikely that teams will fly to Penang via Singapore, as ther are better flights connecting in Kuala Lumpur to get to Penang. Singapore will be the recipient of flights the other way, from Penang to Kuala Lumpur to Singapore on the leg after the Penang leg.

I haven't given this speech to newbies in a long time, but they shoudl all read this carefully:

READ THE AR16 THREADS, ALL OF THEM, BEFORE ASKING EXPERIENCED RFF INDIVIDUALS TO HELP YOU. MOST OF THE INFORMATION YOU MIGHT ASK IS ALREADY IN THOSE THREADS

I wouldn't be surprised if Seychelles was the non-elimination leg. The boot order would then be exactly the same as TAR 6's.

I don't get what you're trying to say. Oh wait, you're implying that the ice-cream task is a Speed Bump that Carol & Brandy have to do for being last on a non-elimination leg in Penang. Well, it could be. But it doesn't have to be a Speed Bump task just because only Carol & Brandy were spotted doing it. It could be a Detour option that only they choose to complete.

No, likely not. If my memory is correct, the ice cream stand had a flag.

Edit: Yep, it does. Take a look.

Another possibility is that they are decoys and just decided to stop to get an ice cream cone on a hot Singapore day.

Carol & Brandy are safe. Steve & Allie are the decoys (if my source is correct, they "girl with ang moh man, older" were spotted running shortly after Carol & Brandy did their task)

I am missing something...how does seeing Steve and Aliie running make them decoys?? ???

I am feeling totally dense here...what task? running where? And the fact that someone didn't see them does not mean they didn't do it, right?

Sorry, but I am just not understanding what you are saying.

ok, my gut feeling is getting more and more strong, that steve and allie might be the team eliminated in seychelles for losing their bags, and carol and brandy were eliminated in malaysia, and it loooks like to me that singapore leg really could be a non elimination leg, as TAR3 saw john vito and jill eliminated in singa[pore, mount faber, and the production will not want to arrange a team to be eliminated in singapore again

Two NELs in a row seem highly unlikely. I predict an elimination order like TAR 6, which means no one's going home in Seychelles.

Yeah... but how do you lose your bags?? I mean, okay, losing your passport or fanny pack I understand, but short of getting it stolen, a bag is kind of a big thing to lose right?

That's quite a stretch to predict that World Race Productions would "not want to arrange a team to be eliminated in singapore again." I think that anywhere the Amazing Race has been is open to future elimination legs. In fact, there is the concept of the switchback, which specifically requires them to do esactly the same task again.

They've eliminated multiple teams in the same country before - heck, Chile has led to 5 eliminations; Argentina 6.

That doesn't matter. Decoys have been spotted doing tasks before. Example: Maria & Tiffany in Estonia at the Blackheads House. The ice cream stand could still be a task (or more likely a place where they just get a clue) with Carol & Brandy there solely for decoy purposes. Without more information about the sightings (like how frantic the teams were or whether they had sound men with them) we don't really know which team was the decoy and which wasn't.

And yes, both teams could be decoys, but given past seasons, it's highly unlikely we'll have two Final 4 non-eliminations in a row again. It was anticlimatic last time.

From the preview: CHINGAY!!

Lots of CHINGAY info and videos here:

http://www.squidoo.com/chingay

In Chinese dialect Hokkien "Chin Yi" or "Chin Gay" which means real art or true art.

This real art or true art is skillfully displayed by using the flag pole (Bamboo pole) and the flag pole ranges from 25 ft to 32 ft, the length of the flag is around 25ft, made from silk and the total weight of these materials is around 60 pounds.

The "Chingay" is a spectacular procession. The Bamboo pole carried perpendicularly by a steward bearer or performers with half-a-dozen others taking turn. The steward bearer/performers will normally balance huge poles with enormous triangular flags, on their forehands, chin, lower jaws and shoulders.

OK, so the flight information for Seychelles to Kuala Lumpur (primary gateway to Penang due to better connections there than through Singapore) is more complicated than I originally estimated due to a Sunday being the expected day of flying. Sunday schedules are often different than weekday schedules. It was Sunday Dec.13  because teams arrived nonstop from Paris on Dec. 11 at 0715 and were able to finish their tasks and checkin before noon. The teams that had to return for the coconuts were subject to an extra 4 miles in the ox cart, which would have taken them about 65 minutes more than the leading teams assuming the ox averaged 3.7 miles/hour as indicated by Answers.com. The reason that can be important is that teams can be expected to have an extended pit stop in the Seychelles (who could ask for anything fore replenishing?). They would be released from it on or before midnight between Dec. 12 and 13 according to my timeline for AR16

There are 2 primary primary routes off the Seychelles, to Doha and to Dubai. Let's examine the best flight for each one Sundays:

Best if they can get it - SEZ DXB EK708 0150 0830 connecting with DXB KUL EK942 (Phil's flight one day earlier) 1030 2135

SEZ DOH QR703 0730 1115 connecting with DOH DXB EK847 1415 1415  in Doha, connecting with DXB KUL MH157 1835 0600+1

If reachable, SEZ DXB EK708 0150 0830 connects with EK404 DXB SIN 0955 2055 connecting with SIN PEN 3K673  0700+1 0825+1, which is not competitive by 2.6 hours

Getting to Seychelles International Airport near Mahe on Victoria island, the airport interestingly at the closest point to Praslin, could be problematical. Do helicopters there fly at night? I don't know. A fast boat could make it in 2 to 3 hours and might get Steve/Allie or Dan/Jordan there in time without being able to do the same for the other 4 teams which had to go back. If the only option is waiting for daylight so helicopters can operate, then teams might get to take the helicopters starting slightly before 0600, the approximate sunrise for Mahe days during the shortest ( and longest too due to being near the equator).  If that was the case, then the 730 am flight to Doha represents the optimal one for them.

Praslin is a small island (1/3 the size of Victory). It does have an airport and heliport (I've seen a picture of that on the Internet):

Praslin Island Airport (airport code PRI) is located on Praslin Island in the Seychelles. The airport is currently only serviced by Air Seychelles, who fly scheduled flights to Mahé and charters to the other islands off the Seychelles. It has one runway designated 15/33 with an asphalt surface measuring 4,318 by 104 feet. (This is the limiting factor as you might be able to get a 737 into and out of Praslin airport, but where in the Indian Ocean is it going to fly to?)

Airline Destinations
Air Seychelles - Mahé (that's it)

The answer to your question is no. They only flew out of there by helicopter of plane to get to Mahe so they could leave from the Seychelles International Airport.

"And we have Dan and Jordan on MH 1138 on 12/14"

Right, I decided to present the long list of 16 Malaysian Airlines flights ( a few code-shared) KUL to PEN on Mondays:

MH9880  07:25  -  08:25
MH1134  07:35  -  08:25
MH1138  09:15  -  10:05  (there you go, Peach; this dovetails nicely with the scheduled arrival into Kuala Lumpur of either MH157 from Dubai or 3K673 from Singapore)
MH9882  10:00  -  11:00
MH1140  10:25  -  11:35
MH9930  12:20  -  13:20
MH1138  13:55  -  14:45
MH9884  14:55  -  15:55
MH1152  16:00  -  16:50
MH9886  17:30  -  18:30
MH1158  18:05  -  19:55
MH9928  18:30  -  19:30
MH1962  19:10  -  20:00
MH1164  20:20  -  21:10
MH9920  20:20  -  21:20
MH1166  21:15  -  22:05

Unless you have to carry the flag there and back, it appears that Jet and Cord are somehow in first at the roadblock...

The real question is this: When they are having taxi problems, is it in the vicinity of the Roadblock location? Because if it is, the flags could actually be part of the Detour. Or it could be the Roadblock but when they finish it they get the Detour clue. What do you all think?

I'll go out on a limb here. I am guessing that Penang is not a pit-stop at all. Teams there continues racing onwards to Singapore and one team is eliminated there.

It's not the first time TAR has pulled this off....

Also, I read somewhere that the teams took the train from Penang to Singapore. Can anyone confirm this?

Penang will be a pitstop, and seeing that there is only 1 non elimination leg left in the race, so the next 2 eliminations will be in Penang and Singapore, following by 1 of the 2 eliminations in China

and i once queried the RFFians here, there is no supportive suggestions that the teams travel by train or by plane to Singapore, so we just have to wait and watch that episode. But my best guess will be by plane.

I have no idea whether AR16 went from Penang to Singapore by train. However, I have the schedules if they did::      13:45

-
Bukit Mertajam (11 miles form Butterworth)   20:39**    -    -    -    -    -    -
 Butterworth (for Penang ferry) depart:    -    -           23:30    -    07:45    10:00    -
 Ipoh  arrive/depart     -    -                         01:19    03:39    -    10:49    14:24    -
 Kuala Lumpur (Old historic station)  arrive:   04:46    06:35    -    13:55    17:26    -
 Kuala Lumpur (KL Sentral)  arrive:    -    -    04:50    06:40    -    14:00    17:30    -
 Kuala Lumpur (KL Sentral)  depart:    -        04:50          08:25    14:00    -    22:30
 Tampin (for Malacca)  arrive/depart    -        xx:xx         10:03    16:14    -    23:39
 Gemas  arrive/depart    -    -                       08:10         10:56    17:07    -    00:52
 Johor Bahru  arrive:    -    -    -                                     13:48    20:11    -     05:39
 Singapore  arrive:    -    -    -                                        15:00    21:30    -    08:20

Looking only at those columns finishing in Singapore, train leave Butterworth (across the Straits of Malacca from Penang) at 0825, 1400 and 2230 to reach Singapore 6.5, 7.7 and 8 hours, respectively, later. That is less than many arduous train rides done by the Amazing Race in past seasons. They could easily have elected for lower costs to take the train.

Apskip, trains in Malaysia are painfully slow when compared to the European network... The only direct train I know of leaves Butterworth at 7.00am and arrives in Singapore at 9.30pm, a journey of 14h30. If leaving at night, there is the option of changing trains in KL Sentral, which would mean a journey from 8.24pm to 4.05pm the next day, a journey time of 19h41.

The 6.5h you mention should only be able to get you from either city to Kuala Lumpur... Would you mind sharing your source?

Buses are the much speedier option, with journey times approximating 8.5h. These leave frequently between 8.00am and 10.30am, then again from 8.30pm to 11.00pm.

I'd love a free for all. Release teams after the last direct flight to Singapore at 9.15pm, then let them choose whichever mode of transportation - train, bus or plane - they want; the first plane in the morning through Kuala Lumpur gets in at 7.05am and the 10.30pm bus at 7am...

I don't think the official KTMB site mentions anything about a six-hour train ride. That's precisely where I confirmed my 14h and 19h itineraries.

I believe it is physically impossible for a Malaysian train to run from Penang to Singapore in six hours.

Shall we move this discussion to the Episode Thread for the following week?

Edited to add: Aah, I found the website (http://www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm) from which Apskip was lifting information. Looks like you've been misreading the columns! You are quoting the travel times from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore.

153 steps is very little - nothing taller than seven storeys! There's got to be an additional portion to the task that we don't know of yet...

(My first thought was Kek Lok Si, but I think there may be way more steps there than 153.)

Hey all. I can share this with you all if it matters much at all. Being from the Penang island myself, there isn't that many tall buildings around to do a 153-step climb up. One I suspect is the one that's called KOMTAR, Penang's tallest building and 6th tallest in Malaysia. The building itself is a 65-storey tower, and I would think the detour requires a climb up the building and some other "chores" as well.

Besides, the chingay field and KOMTAR is just about 5 minutes apart by car.

It needs to be close to Padang Kota Lama (flag field), right? Only a couple of structures I see nearby--the Jubilee clock tower and the fort lighthouse--but neither look tall enough. I agree with Neobie: there must be a catch.

There appear to be two gates (circled).  I'd be willing to bet the video shows them at the west side, and they need to go to the east side, where you can see steps leading up to the pagoda.

Apskip, I'm not sure how you're reading the Thai timetable.  I see two daily trains and one weekend train leaving from Butterworth:

Daily Train 9 leaves Butterworth at 23:30 this train arrives KL at 06:40, then train 5 leaves KL at 08:25 (1 hr 45 min layover) and arrives Singapore at 15:00.  Total time = 15 hr 30 min.

Daily Train 1 leaves Butterworth at 07:45 and arrives Singapore 21:30.  Total time = 13 hr 45 min (no layover in KL).

Saturdays and Sundays, Train 3 leaves Butterworth 10:00 and arrives KL 17:30 then Train 11 (daily) leaves KL at 22:30 (a 5 hr layover!) and arrives Singapore 08:20.  Total time = 22 hr 20 min.

I know there has been discussion of chingay, but sorry Peach I don't think all the information needed is posted yet so I am attempting to fill in some gaps:

Hokkien "Chin Yi" or "Chin Gay" means real art or true art. This art or true art is skillfully displayed by using the flag pole (Bamboo pole) and the flag pole ranges from 25 ft to 32 ft, the length of the flag is around 25ft, made from silk. The total weight of these materials is about 60 pounds.

In a Chingay procession (typically part of a huge annual parade in Singapore) the Bamboo pole carried perpendicularly by a steward bearer or performers with half-a-dozen others taking turn. The steward bearer/performers will normally balance huge poles with enormous triangular flags on their forehands, chin, lower jaws and shoulders. A skilled chingay man must be very fit as chingay requires the mighty strength of brawny biceps, supple limbs, physical co-ordination and lightning reflexes.

A strip of transparent silk steaming from the top of the bamboo to the ground trails as far behind as 35 feet. A chingay  man besides performing stunts must not let this soft material drape itself around and entangle the other performers. If the flagpole appears to be falling at any time, those other team members will move in to prevent it from crashing on to the onlookers and spectators or objects which may be in its path.

I think that info comes from the same link I posted, but the more info the better. If  experienced posters are having trouble, then we need more info to clarify. It is easy to get lost sometimes, I do all the time and then Boingo comes and straightens me out

So summary as we know it:

Chingay is flag balancing and is a Detour choice.

The other Detour choice includes climbing 152 (or 3) steps, probably in the Kek Loc Si Temple,

Somewhere in here we should have something to do with incense as well, perhaps carrying some up the temple stairs??

Unless the incense is a RB instead...we still need the RB and speedbump.

Should have another promo out later today!! :hearts:

Thanks for the info everyone, sorry for being so impatient.

Peach: I had missed that post. Thanks for the link! (And the summary of course!)

New promo.  So we go from hauling coconuts to smashing coconuts (looks like maybe the Road block)?

We pretty much see all the teams running through the airport at the same time.  Not sure if I saw Mike & Louie, though.

Performing the RoadBlock we see Jet, Caite, Louie and Carol.

Oh, and I think that's incense when it says "Exotic Rituals."  It looks like maybe he's blessing the flags for the chingay.

Looks like they're carrying giant incense sticks.

Also - "find the guru" - probable Speed Bump? (and an homage to TARA's hilarious "find the girl on the swing" task?)

Getting a lot of help from my Penang friends...

The Pit Stop looks like the Peranakan Mansion. Extremely excited to see the Peranakans getting some love! Penang, along with the other two original Straits Settlements, is one of the few places in the world, even within Malaysia, to have this beautiful mix of cultures, and I'm very glad they're acknowledging this very special bit of Malaysia. And on top of that we get Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists... Cultural propriety win!

Also, it's not a huge surprise, but the snake temple is the famous Temple of the Azure Cloud (清雲巖) at Bayan Lepas.

If it's any help, Dawne, when they show Louie, you can see that it is a sandy area by the water.

I remember in Amazing Race Asia 1 on the beach at Ko Poda Island, Thailand where only Sandy had the force to open coconuts until one with red dye was smashed open. Perhaps a variant of that ROADBLOCK was used in Penang to create the huge pile of opened coconuts. Of course it could also be just a copra factory by the beach.

Well, the good news for Jet & Cord fans is that by the look of things, they are one of the early teams to the Road Block.  Not very many broken coconuts when we see Jet.

That's part of the Detour.  The giant incense sticks are for a general task, I believe.

The detour is either carry the flags across the field, balanced on head or carry the giant incense sticks up the 152(3) steps. It appears that both teammates have to carry a flag or carry a giant incense stick.

It appears that Jet/Cord and Steve/Allie do the flags. It looks like Dan/Jordan, Brent/Caite and Carol/Brandy do the giant incense sticks. I dont see anything in there about which one Mike/Louie do.

Peach is there any possiblity of getting a screencap just before the flag detour screencap with the sun in the middle. I think that is Steve, but not 100% sure. It looks like Allie in the right background though.

Thanks for the videos and the caps guys!

Thnee Kong Thua (天公壇), or Altar of the Jade Emperor. It's a Taoist, not Buddhist, temple - so I think TPTB screwed up by putting a Theravada monk there. Not too far from the 'wrong' Kek Lok Si Temple; they're both in Air Hitam. The two are only 2.6km (1.6mi) apart from each other by road; it's pretty walkable and I've covered the route myself. Absolutely no problem with a taxi. Expect to watch it get played up on TV though.

Another nice site with lots of info:

http://www.penang-traveltips.com/jade-emperor-pavilion.htm

Thni Kong Tnua, or Jade Emperor's Pavilion, is a Taoist temple at the foot of Penang Hill in Air Itam, Penang. It is located to the right of the Penang Hill Railway Station.

As the name suggests, the Jade Emperor's Pavilion is dedicated to the worship of the Jade Emperor, or Thni Kong. The term Thni Kong means Heavenly Grandfather, and is the common title for the Huang Shangdi, or Pure August Emperor of Jade. This is the most important deity in the Chinese Taoist pantheon, and is regarded as the ruler of heaven. The worship of the Jade Emperor is traced to as early as the 9th century AD, when he was the patron deity of the imperial family.

The Thni Kong Tnua or Jade Emperor's Pavilion in Air Itam is one of those rare temples dedicated to the worship of this august deity. The temple in its present form dates back to 1905. It was built by the same Cantonese-Hokkien temple trustees as the Kong Hock Keong, better known as Kuan Yin Teng. A Taoist shrine is said to have existed on that particular site since 1869, and for that reason, the present Jade Emperor's Pavilion is regarded as being over 140 years old.

Before the renovation of 2002, the Jade Emperor's Pavilion received its last major facelift through the efforts of the philanthropist brothers Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, of Haw Par Villa fame. That was back in 1931. Among the structures built at that time was an octagonal pavilion that is still standing.

The Jade Emperor's Pavilion sits on a horse-shoe knoll called Fong San, or Phoenix Mountain, a particularly auspicious position, for it represents the four sacred creatures of Taoism – green dragon, white tiger, black turtle and red peacock, each guarding the temple in four cardinal directions.

The Thni Kong Tnua is unique in that it is a Taoist temple managed by Buddhist monks. One of the more imminent was Abbot Jing Ming, a Mahayanist Buddhist monk who also taught Zen Buddism. He was the abbot of Thni Kong Tnua from 1905 to 1915.

The Thni Kong Tnua underwent extensive renovation and restoration which began in January 2002. As the craftmanship is not available locally, artisans from China had to be employed. They include 33 craftsmen from Fuzhou. The people involved in the restoration is also the ones who worked on the award-winning Thian Hock Keng Temple in Singapore. The restoration of the Thian Hock Keng Temple received an award from Unesco for cultural heritage conservation.

The Jade Emperor's Pavilion is particularly busy on 8th night of Chinese New Year, because it is thronged by devotees coming to celebrate the Jade Emperor's birthday. As I am neither Buddhist nor Taoist, I document the Thni Kong Tnua for Penang Travel Tips and AsiaExplorers from a purely secular, heritage and cultural perspective. I photographed the Jade Emperor's Pavilion on 28 January, 2006, during Chinese New Year, when the temple was still in the midst of the renovations. Later I organised a site visit to it for the Penang Heritage Trust, but unfortunately I myself was unable to attend as I was away overseas. Nevertheless, it gave the participants of the visit a glimpse at one of the few temples to be erected for the Jade Emperor. I understand that the temple trustee are keen to submit it for Unesco consideration for heritage culture conservation.

Getting there
Take Rapid Penang Bus U204 which goes to the Penang Hill Railway station. Check the Rapid Penang Bus Routes for details. From the bus stop, walk a short distance down the road till you reach a lane to your left with a big arch. The arch is for the Jade Emperor's Pavilion. Take that lane. A short distance up that lane, Go straight up until you see the Jade Emperor Pavilion perched on the hill side. The hill railway viaduct passes right behind the temple.

What to see and do
The Jade Emperor Pavilion was recently restored. Go inside and admire the pavilion itself, which has the largest tragrams dome of any Taoist temples in the region. The temple is resplendent in its crimson lacquer.

Nearby Sights
The following are sights within the immediate vicinity or close by:

Bat Cave Temple: Just a walking distance away
Beow Hiang Lim Temple
Huat Huah Liam Temple
Ayer Itam Maha Mariamman Temple
Kek Lok Si: Not actually close by, since you have to drive or take the bus there, but worth a visit if you have the time

Buses are the much speedier option, with journey times approximating 8.5h. These leave frequently between 8.00am and 10.30am, then again from 8.30pm to 11.00pm.

I assume that Neobie has never been to Malaysia or Singapore. DON'T TAKE THE BUS DOWN. Reason: The Causeway. Causeway jams are horrible. Joab might know what I'm talking about.

:lol3: (My reply in the Singapore thread!)

Anyway... Note how the Chingay option is much closer to the Pit Stop than the Incense option. If I were TPTB and planning for things to be somewhat fair, the Roadblock would come after the Detour.

Okay, so what do we have??

Snake Temple (Neobie: snake temple is the famous Temple of the Azure Cloud (清雲巖) at Bayan Lepas.) : get a clue??

Tropical spice gardens and Yogi (?) in a swing (Caper: Penang's tropical spice gardens http://www.malaysiasite.nl/spices.htm )>> could this be the Speedbump??

Detour: Chingay (flag carrying on the head/face) in the Padang Kota Lama! Translates into "Field of the Old Fort," just outside Fort Cornwallis (Neobie) in front of the Penang Town Hall.
VS incense carrying at Thnee Kong Thua (天公壇), or Altar of the Jade Emperor (Neobie)

RB: coconut smashing (location??)

Pitstop: Peranakan Mansion

Wow, as Boingo would say, it is only Tuesday and our work is done.

Jet/Cord are looking for a taxi outside the Snake Temple, I think. That means they're behind at the start then?

The tour bus, passer-by in a cowboy hat, and the store hawking "鐘金泉" (brand name of an ingredient for rojak, popular as a souvenir, especially for Chinese tourists) suggest this is a tourist destination. I was looking around in the historic district, but not much luck with the stripes (which are clearly visible on Google Earth) and the row of trees. Think the Snake Temple fits the bill!

Note the staircase, ramp and railings in the first pair of photos.

If Steve/Allie switch Detours that can't be good.

It could be a FF clue that she just hasn't put away yet. But right now I'm more inclined to think of it as the clue they get after the Detour. Maybe it's a green piece of a flag instead of the usual paper clue?

We believe that teams are racing around midday. Given that Penang is slightly north of the Equator and that it's the middle of December, we can expect the sun to be shining from the South and shadows to be pointing North. So our teams are running in a general westerly direction?

Could be the path running westwards from the parking lot at Kek Lok Si along the north side of the complex...

Well, peach, I just did a little Google Earth research myself...and I realized that the guy who filmed Allie outside the gate to Kek Lok Si temple was actually filming from within. So they were at the "right" gate. Dunno why they would leave without doing the task. :duno:

There appear to be two gates (circled).  I'd be willing to bet the video shows them at the west side, and they need to go to the east side, where you can see steps leading up to the pagoda.

Peach,

Phil always says that teams will have to do an extra task sometime in the next leg. He never says where it will occur. It just looked to me that it would be near the RB. Other wise, the cowboys will spend all day driving un and down the island. It is just speculation on my part.

TAR 15 Leg 9: Right before Roadblock (first task of leg)
TAR 15 Leg 11: Right before Roadblock (first task of leg)

TAR 14 Leg 6: Right before Detour, after Roadblock
TAR 14 Leg 9: Before Roadblock and Detour

TAR 13 Leg 7: Right (before/after? - can someone verify please?) Detour, after Roadblock
TAR 13 Leg 10: Right before Detour, after Roadblock

I won't go back further, but usually they are earlier in the leg rather than later.

Having seen the caps of Brent/Caite and Louie/Michael in darkness (plus the flight mojo), I'm assuming there's (finally) an HoO bunch at the Snake Temple.

Penang's Site (http://www.penang.ws/penang-attractions/nature.htm) gives us this:

Quote
Opening Hours (for the Temple): Daily, 07:00 – 19:00

which fits in with the lateish flight into Malaysia and the daytime racing. (and there looked to be some pretty long shadows in most of the caps, which suggest a morning run).

Great job Hooky........

Of the 7 instances you listed............4 are the first task of the leg and 3 are the 3rd task, between the RB/DT or DT/RB part of the leg.

In Tar12, leg 8, it was first task, before Detour and RB.

In Tar 12, leg 10, it was between the RB and Detour.

In Tar 13, leg 7, it was after the RB and before the Detour.

So that means it is split almost 50/50.........at 5 as the first task and 4 times as between the DT/RB or RB/DT or the 3rd task for the NELed team.

Just my two cents, the speedbumps in TARLA occurred:
1: at the beginning of the leg (right after airport arrival)
2: just before receiving the clue to go to the Pit Stop
3: mid-way point of the leg (after doing DT & RB, but before lots of RI tasks)

though it looks like normal TAR is less extreme on speedbump positioning

I'll go check those caps, but I think there were only 3 blurred ones....

No...it goes right to a big sun...this is the only one... But IS this Steve?? Looks right but I thought his shorts were darker...

Mam... they lost their bags in the previous legs remember? They're wearing borrowed clothing now....

After rewatching the previous episode. Steve and Allie have on the same exact clothes that they had on when they gave the fruit stand guy their bananas. Steve had on a black tshirt and khaki shorts. I suspect that he had his swim suit on underneath his shorts. That was a black swimsuit. I think that is what you remember Peach. His black shirt and khaki shorts are on the boat when they discuss going back to get their bags. I assume that production got all the other teams packs on their snorkling boats, cuz they are all shown on the boat ride to the submerged bottles. We just dont see production putting them on the boats. I also assume that production got them off the boats at Praelin, when the teams all had to swim ashore. So far, Steve and Allie dont appear to have borrowed any clothes or bought any replacements yet. Btw, when Steve and Allie swam to their boat.....they did not have their documents bag when they swam. Another indication that producton was there to get their stuff to the boat all nice and dry.

I just thought I would make a couple of observations. I wouldn't be surprised if Jet/Cort didnt breeze right through this task. You have to remember what J/C do for a living. They ride bucking stock. To do that, you have to have an incredible sense of balance. So I bet they have a lot of fun playing with the flags. Steve could probably do it, but I dont think Allie will be able to do it. So thats why they probably switch detour tasks, Peach.

Speed Bumps:

TAR 16 Leg 5: Right before Detour (first real task of Leg)

TAR 15 Leg 9: Right before Roadblock (first task of leg)
TAR 15 Leg 11: Right before Roadblock (first task of leg)

TAR 14 Leg 6: Right before Detour, after Roadblock
TAR 14 Leg 9: Before Roadblock and Detour

TAR 13 Leg 7: Right (before/after? - can someone verify please?) Detour, after Roadblock
TAR 13 Leg 10: Right before Detour, after Roadblock

I won't go back further, but usually they are earlier in the leg rather than later.

Hooky,
You have done a great job, so I have gone further back. This is not onerous, as SpeedBumps started with Amazing Race 12 and they were only two in that race. Kynt and Vyxsin had one in ep. 8 in Mumbai, the yoga exercises before the DETOUR or the ROADBLOCK. TK and Rachel had one in ep. 10, the firecracker run and hosing in central Taiwan, before the ROADBLOCK or DETOUR.

That is fine, except that the bags were left not at the dock but back at the Turtle Toodle site 1.5 miles away. Was Production responsible for going back to get them? I don't think so. I expect that Production would have loaded onto the boat only items brought to the dock, but not anything left elsewhere.

Here is the full quote, apskip. Guess you missed the part about "the documents bag" which WAS at the docks. Its around his neck when they turn in their bananas. Details, details, details.

Btw, when Steve and Allie swam to their boat.....they did not have their documents bag when they swam. Another indication that producton was there to get their stuff to the boat all nice and dry.

They are not shown swimming with their Amazing Race documents bag, but it is on the boat as they go to the bottle recovery area. So production must have put it on the boat along with his shorts and shirt, her pants and their shoes and socks. How do I know this? Because they are wearing them all in the screencaps from Penang. I did not say, nor even imply that production went back to the turtle toddle to get their backpacks. Guess you just assumed that.

As a footnote, I have no doubt, that production did pick up their backpacks at the Turtle Toddle, to return to them AFTER they are elminated or AFTER the race is over.

Thank you Evan and thank Yizhi for us! Always nice to have another pair of eyes on the ground! Good confirmations. Would he like to make a site visit to the road near the temples?? The running teams are still not firm...

I don't think that Khoo Kongsi (http://www.penang-traveltips.com/leong-san-tong-khoo-kongsi.htm) is a match though, I think Neobie's Thnee Kong Thua (天公壇), or Altar of the Jade Emperor is a better photo match.

Will need to look at the beach/hotel photos too, the Mutiara looks pretty good.

The ROADBLOCK was the rocking and underwater car in JiJi. One written source indicating that it was after the SpeedBump was the basis for my statement. However, with your different facts (and they can't both be right), I went to my Amazing Race 12, episode 10 tape to settle the issue. The SpeedBump occurred after Rachel finished the ROADBLOCK, so Dr. Rox is correct on this point of fact,

I was agreeing with you in general, not about a specific task. It would be great if production could take advantage of more local festivals, but whether it's tomato-throwing or coconut smashing, the race is stuck with its own timetable.
As far as the temple goes, I found a better picture on this page (http://steptpg.blogspot.com/2009/10/travellers-talea-little-temple-by-sea.html), so I'm going to go ahead and call it.

Maybe prepare something like Ais Kachang or Teh Tarik for a judge, kind of like what Maria & Tiffany did for the speed bump in Season 15, it's a little more challenging....

My fantasy Malaysia leg had a Detour option of High Tea (pulling teh tarik) and Roti (spinning roti canai dough) in a coffee shop, but that's a whole other story... It does seem like a pretty lame Speed Bump if all they had to do was find the guru though. (I believe the term yogi applies to Hindis and Buddhists, but not Sikhs.)

Did Jet/Cord and Brent/Caite arrive on the same flight as everyone else? I haven't seen any of them together with the pack, and the only indication might be the cowboys' "Everyone else got taxis!" at the Snake Temple. I don't have the first preview, so I can't tell for sure...

That's possible, since we never had a 2 hour/TBC episode yet. But it's also kinda possible if those two are just for show for the promo (they just hid Phil from the shot) although they're still gonna be local greeters but the promo just focused exclusively on them for the sake of "exoticness" and "diversity" :duno:

A possibility is that it is a TBC and Phil has left for Singapore and allowed the "Keep Racing" instruction to be handed out by someone other than himself.

It's impossible since it has been spoiled that Shanghai Leg 1 is an NEL. So these two legs are both EL.

According to spoilers after this leg is directly Singapore. Still, I can't imagine a 2-leg in Penang itself. If they want a 2-leg ep they might as well go to another city after the teams "check in" or put it on a different leg.

Side note: I wonder when the FF will come into play. It wouldn't be fair if the FF were on this leg since the cowboys would ultimately not be able to use it w/ the speed bump and all. Gosh, usually the FF will be like, midway (leg 5/6)

I wouldn't mind if the FF was finally phased out this season.

Actually, the FF is capable of giving us some entertainment. Like in TARA 2 when they were counting the bars. There were two teams doing it so it added to the "drama". lol.

Besides, it's ironic because some teams that do try to do the FF end up getting put in last place (Terrence/Sarah)

That's why recently only one team goes for it (Season 15) or none of the teams wish to risk it (Season 14).

I think Penang leg maybe a TBC , as we know that Steve & Allie and Carol & Brandy spotted at Singapore.
And might be Singapore is a Double Elimination Leg which eliminated Steve & Allie and Carol & Brandy.

That would be an interesting surprise, but I doubt it. Whoever gets eliminated on this leg will still race decoy in Singapore, which is likely why both teams were spotted there.

Ok sure. But just wanna say the advantage: it can bring a team to 1st place and give them a HUGE lead.

Back to the topic, after checking with the almighty Wikipedia, it's now highly unlikely that this leg is gonna be a TBC. I get the feeling we won't have a leg like that. Maybe we'll just have a 2-hour finale.  :duno:

For some reason I was thinking maybe Steve and Allie were at the Chingay task and switched to the Incense task.

But I think that is wrong, and wanted to see what y'all thought?

We have flight data of Dan/Jordan arr Penang at 1015, we know teams have to get a route info clue at the Snake Temple prob first.

Thanks to Kevin and Zhou, we know that Mike/Louie, Dan/Jordan, and Steve/Allie were seen at the wrong temple about 11 ish:

More from Kevin and Zhou: :hearts:

Quote
I looked at the pictures and one team was Mike and Louie - I believe they were the first to arrive. I'm pretty sure that the other team (the second to arrive) was the frat boys - the guy I stood next to was a young white guy who wasn't wearing a cowboy hat.

The third team was definitely a father/daughter team because the coordinator kept telling the daughter to make sure she stuck together with her dad.

From the previews, we also see that Steve and Allie are doing the Chingay (flag) detour.

So suppose it went something like this...

They try to find the correct temple for the Incense task and are unable...so switch to the Flag task.

Would that alone have been enough to cause them (IF it is them who fall behind) to drop behind?

Or I am wondering, after reading about Chingay, if this requires more upper body strength then Allie perhaps has. If she was unable to do the task, and then they had to do a double bald snark, then chances are they would be waaaay behind.

Do wonder if perhaps Dan and Jordan had better luck finding the correct temple?? Or if they too switched (the video of them at the temple made me think they were sticking together) but could do the flags because they were stronger...

This is all just spec, I was just wondering how it all fits together.

Maybe Chateau can give us some shadow times of Brandy/Carol carrying incense....

Okay, need some help from the team! I'm at work and can't do it...

I want to coerce Chateau into doing some shadow times for us...we have lots of yummy shadows this week!

But I need the exact location of each of our task locations, with a few other tourist type pics of each place, plotted out on a map so we can see exactly which way is North/South, and where teams are standing

These places if possible:

from the first preview:

the field where the flag task is
the steps Jet and Cord are running down

From the second promo:

The place at the Incense task temple that Brandy and Cord are running past the Incense sticks, and also where they are carrying the sticks

The beach coconut task, the place in front of the Mutiara hotel where they are smashing...

Each of these locations has been identified, but if we can get each spot pinned down more exactly, I'll see if he can help us out with shadows.... but we need to get everything we can to help him, he is swamped right now!

Thanks guys...see what you can find by this evening , okay??  :hearts:

Can't find good satellite imagery for the temple, but here's those from the first preview. North is always up.

The median line in the second map looks wrong, but I arrived at it using an extrapolation along the same road. Would definitely help if someone could double-check!

The sun is shining from the southeast in both photos, so both were shot before noon, I suppose?

Besides, it's ironic because some teams that do try to do the FF end up getting put in last place (Terrence/Sarah)

That's why recently only one team goes for it (Season 15) or none of the teams wish to risk it (Season 14).
The only Fast Forward offered in AR15 was in  Dubai going from the desert to the race track. Cheyne/Meghan had a reasonable lead leaving the desert, so all the other teams knew they could not beat them to the Fast Forward site.

Being anything but first at the Fast Forward site is usually the kiss of death (I can think off the top of my head that Rob/Amber beat it after the Orlando Cooling Station in the Johannesburg area in AR7 and Jon/Kelly did so after going for the Sepilok, Malaysia orangutan place in AR4, ep. 9.) Due to this risk in AR10 ep. 6, Dustin and Kandice were not willing to risk it in Kuwait when David/Mary get a clear lead on them.

To address the statement by Danooky, in AR14- ep. 7 I vaguely remember that the only FF was teams at the Phuket Zoo had the opportunity to buy presents for local charities from their own funds to participate in the Fast Forward, so none chose to do that.

AR13 ep. 8 in Almaty was that Terrence and Sarah started slightly behind Nick/Starr, but since Terrence had eaten no meat in many years he was either unable or very slow to produce any eating results. In ep. 4 Dan/Andrew chased after Ken/Tina on the Fast forward at the Auckland Sky Tower, but backed off at the last minute when they discovered they were behind.

In AR12 ep. 7 the Fast Forward getting a tattoo each at Fabio's Studio in Empoli Italy for Donald and Nicolas was the result of them leaving the aerodrome well ahead of all other teams and discouraging any from attempting it.

In AR3 ep. 6  in Marrakesh Flo/Zach dropped out when they arrived at the carpet merchant and discovered Ian/Terri and John Vito/Jill there ahead of them. Flo played a game of chance against Jill which Jill won to settle the question of who would compete and who would go on to regular tasks. However, since Aaron and Ariane were way behind, neither John Vito and Jill or Flo/Zach suffered serious consequences from going for it at least up to a point.

In AR2 ep. 2 Gary/Dave and Shola/Doyin were already inline to play volleyball when Peggy/Claire arrived and correctly discerned that they had no chance. They quickly dropped out rerouted to the regular tasks. In ep. 7 Mary/Peach attempted to reach first place with success at the Fast Forward, but they arrived after Gary/Dave had already won it. Thanks to slayton for this information in a post below.

So the thesis was that teams trying to capture the Fast Forward frequently lose as a result. In some cases, such as AR3, ep. 3 with Dennis and Andrew, it made no difference whether they went for the Fast Forward or not, as they were going to finish last in Scotland belief had was that teams no longer compete vigorously for the Fast Forward. In season 1 to 4, when there were many Fast Forwards offered each season, teams had more of a tendency to go for it. Teams recently have been more risk averse.

Here's the Mutiara beach, with North being straight up.  You can see the angle of the beach.  I'm not certain exactly where the coconut smashing is going on, but from the pictures of Louie, you can see that the area where they are breaking the coconuts appears to be set square to the beach.  Meaning that the front edge of that area seems to be parallel to the beach.

I'd call it somewhere from about 11 am to noon. That's a smaller shadow compared to that of Jet & Cord at the flags.

Hooky, if you look at the map in my post, you can see several clusters of trees along the shoreline.  In Jet's picture, you can see grass on the south side of the smashing area.  I'm wondering if this area might be directly north of the reddish building that is west of the Mutiara Resort buildings.

Ooh, I think you're on to it! That looks a lot more likely IMO.

EDIT: I don't see evidence of that swimming pool, though. Maybe the wall was put up just for this task? ???

I'm thinking the task is in the circled area; the long buildings are the temple and the arrow points to the shed and tree seen behind Louie.

Luke can probably confirm this, but I believe Mel & Mike said that the Fast Forward required teams to spend all of their money.

(I wouldn't expect any team to take such a huge gamble unless they were way behind.)

In TAR2, Mary & Peach went for the Face reading & Palm reading Fast Forward in Hong Kong, but Gary & Dave had already taken it.

So how about this:

Land at the airport
Go to somewhere and get the clue for the detour
Go to detour (Dan & Jordan, Louie & Mike, Steve and Allie get a traffic jam while cowboys get to the  flags and complete very fast, no idea where Carol & Brandy and Brent & Caite are)
After detour, go for RB while cowboys should do the speedbump first
After RB, go to pit stop...

Just guess.

Oh my gosh! Judging from the screencaps I think we can predict:

1. Some teams will get screwed by traffic and taxis. (I actually missed the Race traffic jams)

2. Those will give the cowboys a chance to make up ground.

Also, it seems Cord is having a rather easy time w/ the flags. It looks like it's Jet who's kinda struggling w/ the task. Just my observation.

Not sure if it is slightly disrespectful to have confessionals in front of the ancestral altar...

Ju Huat (裕发/裕發) is just the name of the establishment, translates into 'abundance and prosperity.' I've searched through the Yellow Pages in both English and Chinese, no luck so far. Found a blog mention (in Chinese) noting that our coffee shop in question is walking distance from the KFC in Sunshine Jelutong...

Slowhatch's got the meaning of kedai kopi; for the rest of us: kedai means shop, kopi means coffee, which makes... coffee shop. *duh*

  try a different spelling of "Jalan Air Hitam", Slowhatch.  You get more pix if you google "Jalan Air Itam" or "Jalan Ayer Itam".  IMO the previews may be in a Indian part of town, more subdued shop signs than Chinatown shops.   :duno:   ;)

FWIW, an interesting link (http://www.penang-traveltips.com/air-itam-village.htm)

Sorry to be of no help here.  I've working on this for a while now but I have to clock out.  Not enough time to get the resolution needed to sort out the teams.

I will add that this detour location (incense):

is called the Ti Kong Temple (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/12720464) at least by one tourist.  Note the matching swastika fretwork.  But the tourist did not place the shot correctly in GE.

Boingo's picture of the entrance to "Chang Qing Pavillion"  is a perfect match.  Two names, same place?  :duno:  But Boingo's GE spot for the shot does not match as best as I can tell. (gone now)  And I can't find it either  :groan:!

All I can find is where it looks like it is but the satelite image is so old that it is just a grassy spot when it was taken.

That's the thing I need for getting time though.

It's all the same place! We're running in circles around something we found all the way back on Page 6!

Chang Qing Pavillion (長慶殿, Changqing Dian, Palace of Eternal Celebration) is a building within the temple compound called Thnee Kong Thua (天公壇, Tiangong Tan, Altar of the Jade Emperor). Ti Kong is just another transliteration of Thnee Kong...

The temple was recently renovated and the steps are newly added, so we can't find it on GE. The temple buildings themselves are at the bottom of Chateau's map image, where the "Penang Hill" label is. Since the steps are exactly perpendicular to the temple gates running down to the street, we can easily plot it out on the imagery we have...

Testing out my rudimentary mathematical skills... The stairs of the temple (refer to map in above post) are angled at 23° clockwise from a East-West orientation, while the shadows in the Carol/Brandy shot are angled approximately 21° from the stairway. The sun is therefore shining at 90°+23°+21°=134° clockwise of North. Putting this angle into our racing date of 14 Dec gives us an approximate time of 11.07am.

The following analysis assumes that the rack of incense is placed parallel to the stone wall of the temple. The angle between the shadow and the rack falls at around 48°. The complementary angle of 48° is 42° (as the wall is perpendicular to the stairs). This leads us to the sun shining at an angle of 90°+23°+42°=155° clockwise of North. The resultant time of 12.18pm may not be precise, but I can postulate that Carol/Brandy are ahead of Daniel/Jordan.

Note that Malaysia has a single time zone and that Penang is almost as far west as you can go on Peninsula Malaysia, meaning that the sun doesn't shine from straight south until about 1.14pm.

Waits for the episode to prove the utter incompetence of my basic geometry...

Hmmmm.  I've been curious why Phil asked a few teams who they would like to see out of the race.  And the answer was Carol & Brandy.  What was that foreshadowing? Carol & Brandy in first place or last?

Maybe Steve and Allie are eliminated this episode and Carol and Brandy, 5th

I was curious as to just how hot and humid it was in Penang while the racers were doing the incense carry at the temple since a couple of them mentioned how hot it was. I looked up the weather for Penang on December 12th - 14th and it was pretty much the same each day.

Dec. 12th: High 90 Low 77   1 PM:  Temp 90  Dew Point 73  Humidity 59%  Wind SE 3.5 mph

Dec. 13th: High 91 Low 77   1 PM:  Temp 90  Dew Point 72  Humidity 55%  Wind E 8.1 mph

Dec. 14th: High 91 Low 78   1 PM:  Temp 91  Dew Point 73  Humidity  55%  Wind NE 9.2 mph

I don't know if we ever nailed down the date exactly, but the Singapore episode thread mentions Dec. 16th as the date there, so Dec. 14th sounds likeliest for Penang. The wind matches up with what Jet and Cord had for the flag balancing task. In any case, the weather would have been hot and humid but not unbearably so. I'd say the comments were due to the fact that most of the racers weren't used to the combination of heat and humidity. Brent and Caite are from South Carolina, so they probably were (and I don't remember them complaining). Jet and Cord probably see a days like that in Oklahoma, but they didn't do the lifting and stair climbing. They don't seem like the types to complain much about it anyway.

25C = 77F and 32C = 89.6F so the racers were seeing typical temperatures, maybe very slightly warm for that area.  35C = 95F so it could have been a few degrees Fahrenheit warmer for us Celsius challenged Americans.   :ascared

so far in singapore or malaysia, the lowest temp is 23, but not seen in the month of dec, and highest can go up to 35, normally it will be either 32 or 33

FYI: this temp is not observed at Cameron Highlands and Genting

This is one interesting leg isn't it. Compare the placements with the previous leg, every team had a symmetrical switch! The first became last and vice versa, second became fifth and vice versa, third became fourth and vice versa. Just a random observation on my part lol.

Jet and Cord were amazing. They started off rough, not able to get a cab and all. But did they make up a whole lot of time at the Detour! What was the most amazing was that even after completing the Speed Bump and Roadblock, no team was there yet. This must be the first in TAR history. Amazing!

I'm sad that Steve and Allie are gone. With that, I'm rooting for Jet and Cord and Dan and Jordan now.

Just poking around, I have discovered something that calls into question the research carried out in design of tasks by World Race Productions well in advance of the actual running and editing of Amazing Race 16, episode 8 in Penang:

The Thnee Kong Thua (or alternate spelling Thni Kong Tnua) is unique in that it is a Taoist temple managed by Buddhist monks.

Huh? Buddhist Tradition in a Taoist temple? Buddhist Temples in Penang are mostly Thai and Burmese in origin, although there are also some Mahayana Buddhist temples of the Chinese. there are  Buddhist temples in Penang.

Here is a list of 14 Buddhist temples WRP could have considered:

Beow Hiang Lim Temple
Dhammikarama Burmese Temple
Heong Giam Si Temple
Huat Huah Liam Temple
Ku Cheng Tse Temple
Mahindarama Buddhist Temple
Malaysian Buddhist Meditation Centre
Penang Buddhist Association
Than Hsiang Temple
Wat Buppharam
Wat Chaiyamangkalaram
Wat Nai
Wat Photichareantham
Wat Pinbang Onn

Weren't there any of those available on December 14? Why was a Taoist temple chosen instead?

I think that is strange too...Neobie pointed it out as soon as we identified the temple, but there doesn't seem to be a good answer.

Why was a Taoist temple chosen instead?

Maybe to suit the Detour option of bringing the Giant Incense. The structure of the temple (the 153 stairs up) gives that detour option it's edge, that's why *maybe* the WRP chose the location

I'm pretty sure the physical aspects of the location had far more to do with the choice that the specific cultural aspects of the temple.

I also wanted to relay some information that I learned from a Penang resident at a non-TAR board (that one does discuss popular culture extensively though, and quite a few of the regulars are TAR fabs, This resident mention that the airport cabs in Penang are only permitted to take passengers from the airport to one location, and then they have to return to the airport. That would explain the problem Jet-Cord had with the taxi at the first clue box in Penang, This resident also mentioned that once in the city, taxis are plentiful aqnd it never takes long to get a taxi. I'll leave it to the Penang residents here to confirm this, but I thought I should mention it and see what y'all thought.

Did anyone ever catch Jordan in the sighting video at the Penang temple? You can see him in the background at about 12 seconds in right before the camera zooms up at the temple.
