OMG It's bad enough to see Andy, but my god is this a rerun I have seen him rant about the Post Office before.  Or did he just grow senile and forget.

PREVIOUSLY ON .. THE AMAZING RACE:

Phil: Eight teams raced from Argentina to Germany. When teams joined up at an Intersection, Dan helped Brandi take a plunge.  While Joe's knee flared up, Jeff got fired up. Detectives Louie/Michael ate, drank and were merry in becoming Team #1 for the leg.  Jordeff came up short but were saved by a Non-Elimination.  "Live to fight another day."

Eight teams remain. Who will be eliminated next?

That would be Joe & Heidi.  I kid........

Joe whines about his bum knee.
According to the map, theyve been taken to Les Mounthairons.
Detective: I believe we're in France.

Louie/Michael, 9:35 am.
CLUE: Drive to St. Menahould.
Phil: Teams must go to a designated location and buy a baguette for the next clue.

Steve, in 2nd, brags that at 57 he looks 25.
Of course, Allie agrees.

Joe, whose knee is 57, leaves with Heidi at 10:11.

Jet/Cord, 10:36.  $20 for this leg of the Race.
They don't know what a "Bag-o-ette" is.

Carol/Brandy, 10:44.
They've decided it's "us against them" such as lesbians vs. cowboys apparently.

Dan/Jordan, 10:57 am.

Inside the baguette, a clue.
Phil: Teams must drive to La Main de Massiges for the next clue.
Detectives make a joke about massages.

The car's an automatic.  Woo-hoo!

Detour: In the Trenches or Under Fire:

In the trenches: go translate a morse code message.
Under fire: crawl to get a message. And then crawl back.

Finally ...
Brent/Caite leave 11:35 am.
She plays dumb again, although in her confessional she says "we do everything great".
Jordeff haven't left yet.

In Massiges ...
Louie/Michael, CLUE: DETOUR. In the trenches, or under fire?
Phil: At the height of World War I this hill was fought over by Germans and French.  Dressed as American doughboys, they'll join their French brothers in the trenches or under fire.
Trenches: Climb down, choose a communication area.  Translate a message being sent to them in Morse code.
Under fire: Crawl 100 yards thru barbed wire and machine gun fire, receive a message from a French soldier, crawl to safety, and attach the message to a homing pigeon (!?!!!?!).

This looks really fun.  And I can't believe a leg after a non elimination and with a U-turn doesn't have a bunching point.  Oh my god how far behind are Jordan & Jeff.....

Detour : In the trenches or under fire??

(awww, I like G-Man's better!)

Trenches:: decipher a Morse code message

Under fire: crawl and get a message from a soldier

Both teams have to tie message to homing pidgeon "The War is Over!!!"

Title: Re: EP5: East Coast live show updates and commentary *please read the rules*
Post by: mswood on March 14, 2010, 07:16:38 PM
G-man gave a great clue description.

Detectives choose Under Fire.
Hopefully I misinterpreted the part about the homing pigeon ... maybe the French Soldier does that part?  Dunno ...

Caite comes off as so frickin dumb.

Steve/Allie think crawling is easier than Morse Code.
Joe thinks he can crawl with a bad knee.

CLUE: CAUTION! U-TURN AHEAD!

Calliope music accompanies Jordeff driving around in circles.
Jeff: Go toward Paris.
Jordan: If I get lost in 1 more circle, I'm gonna shoot myself.
Jeff: We can't get down now.  We're just getting started!

Detective: INCOMING!
Michael: I hate the smell of sulfur in the morning.
Louie gags on the smoke.
Michael thinks it's cool.

On a road, Steve/Allie and Joe/Heidi look for a battlefield on foot, as Joe's knee starts to lock up.

Detectives reach the French soldier.  Message: THE WAR IS OVER.
Here comes a bomber!  KABOOM!
Joe: Crawl on all fours.
Heidi: Omigosh!  It's like a real war!  Scary!!

Louie/Michael head back in the opposite direction under the barbed wire.
They pass Joe and Heidi in the pathway.

Carol/Brandy finally reach Massiges.
Dan/Jordan 4th, Carol/Brandy 5th.  They'll do Under Fire.
Jet/Cord finally arrive, too.  Looks like they'll do the same.

Okay ... it is a French soldier who turns loose a pigeon with the message.

Detectives, CLUE:  Head South.
They get a compass point sign, but not much else.

BLIND U-TURN.
Phil: Teams can force another team to perform the other half of the Detour while remaining anonymous.

DETECTIVES BLIND U-TURN JOE AND HEIDI!
Louie: Joe needs to be knocked off his pedestal, be humbled.
Michael: I didn't come here to make friends.

CLUE: Make your way into town, the church in Massiges.

Jeff is so STUPID!!!!!!!!!!

And all teams are already working on the detour or finished before they even get the first clue.

Dan and Jordan continue the same style of joking around, one calling the other a "tool."

Carol/Brandy: This sucks!

Joe/Heidi struggle through the flying dirt clods and bullets.
Dan/Jordan make jokes about Nazis shooting at them.  Mmmkay.

Jordeff get the baguette.
He's clueless as to what he has to do to get a clue ... although the salesperson basically already told him it was INSIDE the baguette.
Finally he breaks it in half and ... .voila.

Steve/Allie reach the end of the crawl, in 2nd.

Joe, conf, finishing in 3rd: The crawl was a little tough on my knee, what with the boots.  But we got there.
Heidi: We've been U-Turned.
Voice (Steve?): Somebody got you.
Joe: Dammit!
Joe conf: I never imagined we'd be U-Turned.

COMMERCIAL.

Steve: Somebody got you guys.
Allie: Mike and Louie were the only people in front of us.
Joe, conf: I thought the cops were nice guys.  I can't wait to give them some difficulties on the Race.

Cops reach their next CLUE.
Phil: Teams will now pedal themselves to victory, a la Tour De France.  Four mile course to the Pitstop.  Last team to check in may be eliminated.

Jordan is an absolute whiney bitch.  Flo go kick her ass.

Heidi makes short work of the Morse Code message, thinking she has translated "Viva la liberte."
Man: WRONG.
Heidi:  No?  I go back?
Joe: Yeah. Let's go listen again.

Jordeff lost in the countryside.  They approach a town and ask someone for directions.
Jordan: We were just there.

More bombs.
Dan/Jordan and Jet/Cord think the Detour is getting "pretty real" with all the close attacks.
Brandy: I never wanted to be a boy.
Brent/Caite start to catch up on the lesbians.
Caite conf: I don't like Carol/Brandy because they talk bad about Brent and I.
Caite: Let's get those mean old Lesbians!

Joe/Heidi mess up the message again.

Carol/Brandy finish the war and get the "Head South" clue in 5th.

Steve/Allie start the bike race.

A band plays.
Michael: They're singing for us, baby! Come on!
Louie: I hear 'em, Mikie!
Welcome to ________ France.
Phil: Louie/Michael, once again, Team #1.  You've each won a 55 inch HDTV.  You're now the team to beat.  You're killing it!
Michael: We're representing law enforcement all around the world.
Phil: And the Blind U-Turn?
Michael: There's sheeps, and there's wolves.  We're wolves.
Louie:  AAAOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!

Carol & Brandy #5, Brent & Caite #6. however you did not pickup your clue after the detour so they need to go back and pick it up before being checked in.

IDIOTS!

Dan or Jordan, one, says he looks like Lance Armstrong.

Phil: Steve/Allie, you're Team #2.
Steve: Two, again.  All right!

Joe: What do you think that first letter is, again?
Heidi: Dot, dot, dot, dash.  It's V.

Having finished the course, Brent/Caite walk, although they're not sure if they're going South or not.
Now they're confused as to what "HEAD SOUTH" means.

Phil: Jet/Cord, you're Team #3.

Phil: Dan/Jordan, you're Team #4.

Jordeff finally arrive at Massiges.
SPEED BUMP.
Phil: Dug out of muddy fields, these subterranean shelters were soldiers' safe havens.  They must reinforce walls of a trench with these branches, to the satisfaction of an engineer.

Phil: Carol/Brandy, you're Team #5.

Jordan: My shoes are too big!  My hat is too big!
Brent: We're heading south right now.  "Warning.  Last team to check in may be eliminated."
Brent/Caite get on bicycles.

Seeing Jordeff walk thru the trench ... Joe: There's another team behind us.
Unfortunately though, Heidi ain't getting the Morse Code just yet.

Phil: Brent/Caite, you're the 6th team to arrive.  HOWEVER, you did NOT pick up your CLUE after the DETOUR.  You must go back and pick it up before I can check you in.
Brent:  Oh.  My.  God.

Besides the lack of a "REAL" equalizer this leg is golden.  We better get departure times next week, so we can really see how teams did.

And by the way at this point, have we ever had a final four that performed that this poor.

And what Brent & Caite by passed was the U-Turn clue box.

Phil: You didn't have a bicycle clue, right?  Well, that's the clue you need to get.
B/C get back on their bikes and ride the 4 miles, back in the other direction.
Brent: That makes no sense.

Joe/Heidi still trying to sort out the message.
Heidi: Victoire?
French soldier: NO.
Joe: Let's try again.

Jeff: Is this good?
Soldier: YES.
Jordeff: DETOUR.
Jeff: Your call.
Jordan: I want to do Under Fire.  I don't wanna translate.

Brent: I headed South. The actual direction, South.
Heidi tries again, modifying the letters.
Joe: When I saw how frustrated Jordan/Jeff were, I knew we had more time.
Soldier/ Judge: NO.

Joe gets the idea to check the numbers, too.

Jeff conf: With a 1 in 8 chance at winning a million dollars, I'd think she'd have a little more 'hop' in her step.

Joe: I got 10 letters.
Jordeff start over, because she can't figure out how to crawl.  Jeff tries to help her.
Jeff: THE WAR IS OVER.
Joe brings forth another message.
Soldier/Judge: NO.
Heidi: Unfortunately, we're going nowhere.
Joe/Heidi hug as she starts to cry.
Jordeff leave, heading South.

Jeff notices the U-Turn and now realizes why Joe/Heidi are still there.
Heidi, in the fetal position with Joe: Why did they U-Turn US!?

Phil: Brent/Caite, you're Team #6.

Jeff, on bike: Let's finish strong! Pedal!

Phil:  Jordan/Jeff, you're Team #7, still in the Race.

As the sun sets on their battlefield, Phil comes to Joe and Heidi.
Phil: Unfortunately, the other teams have checked in.  Sorry to tell you, but you have both been eliminated.
Heidi:  Okay.
Phil: The code was "We will prevail.  Vive la France."  How do you  feel, knowing who U-Turned you?
Joe: That's just part of the game, the competition.
Joe conf: My wife impressed me so much.  Very proud of her.
Heidi conf: I have no problems walking away today, with Joe in my life.
Both: We had a great time, regardless.

Hmm...seeing how Steve & Allie are doing so well, I can't imagine how are they getting themselves eliminated ??? Will they fall prey to the other U-Turn? Or will the flight schedule cost them everything? They've been very consistent and efficient so I'm curious to see what happens with them.

Well, they were in last place, and they probably didn't feel they could catch up to Jeff & Jordan, and they were so frustrated that they just gave up.  But yeah -- they would've had a 24-hour penalty if they hadn't been Philiminated.

And I guess Joe & Heidi went the way of Amanda & Kris -- although Amanda & Kris were much nicer than Joe appears to be.  Louie & Michael's decision was (mostly) personal, whereas Luke's decision was more strategic.

That detour task was well designed and carried out weell on the screen. And it was oretty obvious to avoid the Morse Code task, because the explosions would make the task difficult.

Qhat killed me was some teams confusion WWI with WWII. Some of the comments from Louie and Michael were just......Caite-like.

Emmy-Award Winning Lines:

Brandy: More stupid people!

Jordan: Are you alright soldier?
Dan: Shut up brother!

AND MY MOST FAVORITE LINE (This made me cry  :()

Heidi: Why did they U-Turn us?

I'm so sad that Joe and Heidi are Philiminated. They are such a lovely couple, but their cockiness eliminated them. Even in confessionals, Heidi was SO HAPPY and never knew they we're gonna be out of the race.  :(

Seriously!!!!!!!!!!! MICHAEL AND LOUIE!!! You guys are frickin' idiot. There's no room to make a revenge if it's not all about strategies because that will come and haunt Michael and Louie for u-turning Joe & Heidi!

What they should have done is U-Turn Jet & Cord (the strongest team on the race) and put personal feelings aside!!! They should've grabbed the chance to knock a strong team out, not a weak team out!!! KEEP weak teams around much as possible!!!!!

That's my strategic move for U-Turn Amanda & Kris since they were pretty strong and there's no way I could out-perform Kris with his physical strength and they have been doing pretty well for first three legs. So, I took a first chance to knock them out!!

As if Amanda and Kris' wood stack haven't fell apart, I would've u-turned Tammy & Victor....

To be fair, Joe & Heidi were still a strong team  and on their Additional videos, Mike & Louie make a good point, that the cowboys aren't as well traveled. Besides, U-turning either team could've been useless from their point of view since JeJo were really far behind.

Joe & Heidi. :'(

I agree the U-turn was lousy. Not the decision itself, but the reasoning behind it. "Joe needs to learn a lesson." Yes, maybe he does. But elimination? Now granted, there's no way Louie & Michael could have known the significance of what they were doing at that moment, but based on spoilers, that may well have been a significant reason why they didn't make the F3. If they had done that to Jet & Cord or Dan & Jordan, things may well have turned out differently for them.

If I had been in that situation, I likely would have U-turned Joe & Heidi, but for strategic purpose, not for a pointless incident that rubbed me the wrong way. If not them, I would have chosen Jet & Cord. It really boils down to which team (and their associated strengths) is stronger: the more consistent team or the one that had a peak a couple legs back?

Now that I think about it, either Joe & Heidi, Jet & Cord, or Steve & Allie are the strongest team so far (can't decide which). It's a shame that every U-turn lately means certain doom. :P

And we even get a bonus: at least one more week to watch Jeff & Jordan stink it up at the back of the pack. :groan:

As for the Emmy Episode: This is certainly not the emmy episode for me. I would maybe go with Leg 3 (probably not, actually), but hopefully we haven't reached that episode yet. If we have, it's a shame, because I thought this one was too much of a staging with tasks, and not "genuine" enough. I hate these elaborately set up, staged tasks. They seem like an insult to what the race once was. Plus the editing really wasn't that great. It felt rather clunky instead. The best editing still goes to Leg 2, for me at least.

Joe's knee would not have lasted much longer. I think Mike and Louie should have U-Turned Jet and Cord also. I liked that they thought about getting Allie and Steve out because they have come in second place 3 weeks in a row, but personal feelings creeped in. I think this will come back to bite them and the cowboys will have no problem hurting Mike and Louie down the road.

I'm pretty turn off by Michael and Louie. I think the producers must be feeling sad that the teams that are remaining in the race DOES NOT appeal to the viewers.

I'm a JET AND CORD fan now. They're fun, relaxed, smart, do their own thing and that impresses me.

I love Caite's love for adventure as well.. but when they quarrel...

As usual, Steve and Allie is love.

The U-TURN was stupid move by the detectives, and it was unfair.

Hated this episode.

Half of the teams were either overbearing, whiny, or incompetent this week. Not a good sign.

Strategically, the detectives made the wrong decision U-turning people. I can see why they did it though, considering half the teams  and viewers think Joe's annoying.

On the other hand, the fanbase seems to be unified on their two favorites!  :hearts: Cowboys or Steve/Allie FTW!

This looks really fun.  And I can't believe a leg after a non elimination and with a U-turn doesn't have a bunching point.  Oh my god how far behind are Jordan & Jeff.....

Sure it does!! Bunched on the bus!! :neener:
Not quite! Teams entered the bus in Hamburg with positions and time differentials as determined by their pit stop finish and they got off the bus in France with exactly the same positions and time differentials. That means they were frozen during the bus ride. That is different from bunching.

On the use of the U-Turn (I still haven't really watched the episode yet, so I could be wrong), did Phil say this was the only one this season.  If so what Michael and Louie did was extremely risky (though it did work) as in most cases teams would be able to complete both sides of the detour in the allotted time.  Typically when teams get Yielded or U-Turned and survive it fires them up.  Since they said it was to put him down a peg, I am curious if they honestly thought it would knock the team out (though they may have not realized how far behind Jordan & Jeff truly were, which isn't that unusual, but unlike normal Pit Stops they travelled with them and you would think teams would talk).

People here talk about U-Turn on Jet & Cord, while it's a sound choice again not very likely to work (based on how long it normally takes teams to complete detours).  In all honesty (though both teams on so far haven't been strong), the only teams that I personally would have thought the U-Turn's penalty would have time to take out would have been Brent & Caite or simply being brutal and killing Jordan & Jeff.

I think I would have done Brent & Caite.

Huh? The Weavers were never U-turned in season 8 since the U-turn did not exist until season 12. At the end of episode 9 in Salt Lake city their last-place finish led to non-elimination and a confiscation of all their possessions. That is no U-turn in my  book.

I know the U-Turn came to be in season 12. What I meant was that they were U-turned in the same way the Paolos Yielded the Weavers in the sense that the special route marker was used on them due to spite.

I guess Michael is going to be happy losing to Jet/Cord. His rationale for not choosing them so he could harass Joe/Hedi is weak in my opinion. Jet/Cord have already in 5 episodes demonstrated that they have most of the key qualities needed to win an Amazing Race. What had Joe/Heidi demonstrated in 5 episodes other than a bad knee, ability to drink beer (unlikely to be useful in the rest) and lots of puffery?

I'm not surprised that Louie & Michael didn't make the final 3 based on that video -- it's a losing mentality.

Not on topic, but Herman Edwards was the Eagles defensive back who in November 1978 recovered the famous fumble on the last play of the Giants/Eagles game after an incredibly stupid  botched handoff between Joe Pisarcik and Larry Csonka. He scored a touchdown, the Eagles won and went to the playoffs. It is still referred to as either "the Fumbler" or "Miracle at the Meadowlands". The game actually meant nothing to the giants, but it changed hte course of football history. Ever since that game, an NFL team which can run out the clock has the quarterback immediately kneel down and has 2 backs behind him in case of a fumble to tackle an defensive player lucky enough to recover it. Herman did win that game with a lot of help from Pisarcik and Csonka.

Great episode really good leg and nice tasks paricularly the detour. I preffered this over the last leg

Sad about Joe and Heidi's elimination  :( , they were a good team and they were my faves, sad to see them go and struggle with the morse code (even I dont know morse code!)

On Mike and Louie's decision on the U-turn, well I know it's strategy, I know it's a part of the game, They did not do a good decision on the u-turn. (how come I feel like karma will happen?)

They're not really among my most faves though, Although It was may have been personal that they did not u-turn the cowboys and they definitely would rather have the cowboys win.

BTW the cowboys are my most favorite team so far

This is off-topic, but Herman Edwards on ESPN once explained that the Giants deliberately did not kneel down because they wanted to rub it in the Eagles' faces.

The Giants did it for personal reasons, and it ended up blowing up in their faces instead.
