Teams make their way to their first destination where they will encounter one of the most daunting Roadblocks in the history of the series on THE AMAZING RACE

The Amazing race was being filmed whie wer were in town, and Elise had the pleasure of seeing many moronic Americans carrying paint tins up the hills. We were chased away every time we went for our cameras, so you`ll have to watch all of season 27 to check the truthfulness of this.

Another Roadblock? But the moms are doing it both. (The words "Road Block" have space, so it is not a Roadblock right? :lol3)

i don't think the highwires are a roadblock

both Dana and Adrian are seen doing the task

the person falling from the highwire in the promo video is definitely Adrian

and one of the photos has Dana doing the task as well

Essentially all the teams pictured at the Roadblock are at the Roadblock sometime from 9:30 to 10:00 am Pacific time based on the EXIF data. The only picture not at or near the Roadblock is Jody & Shannon, who are on the way to Wulf Castle at around 1:00 pm pacific time.

Joe & Heidi are running to the Roadblock at around 9:30.
Monique & Shawne, Dan & Jordan, Steve & Allie, and Jeff & Jordan are all at the Roadblock at about 9:45.
Louie & Michael are at the Roadblock at about 10:00.
Adrian & Dana are at the Roadblock at about 2:30. :(

EDIT: Fixed Adrian & Dana error.

Add five hours for Chile, and that's about 2.30pm to 3.00pm, eh? No first leg bunch-up-and-collect-departure-times then?

If the flight lands at about 10.10am, we've got to give them something to do until the afternoon...

And if we needed more confirmation... Blue clues. Not a Roadblock.

6.00pm, that's pretty late, and we know Jodi/Shannon are not last. Is Wulff Castle going to be our Pit Stop?

And what's going on at the back of this shot?

I agree...no red cards to be seen.

Good job on the location Neobie!!!! Is that anywhere near this location with Steve and Allie^^??

So why does the press say the highwire IS the RB?? :groan:

So this looks pretty plausible, huh?

Paint the town in Santiago
Bus bunching to Valparaiso (1.5h journey)
High wire at Cerro Artilleria
Pit Stop at Wulff Castle, Vina del Mar

Yeah, Peach. Steve/Allie are in the area. Looks like the starting side to me, but I can't confirm for now.

Sorry, my bad. Got a little to excited! But the painting still takes place before the high wire, if it was around lunchtime, right?

Are ALL the teams together at the high wire or are these just a clump after a bunch? It's halfway through the leg and they're all still stuck with the pack?

"Nana is kickin' your butt (Chile)"--Brothers Jordan (left) and Dan must perform a Road Block in Valparaiso, Chile in which one team member must cross a tight rope the length of a football field and 120 feet above rooftops, in order to receive their next clue on THE AMAZING RACE, premiering Sunday, Feb. 14 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. that is clearly a route info clue in their hands

and there are clearly people behind them on the ropes course already

We spent a whole lunchtime in a plaza....didn't we decide this was the market? ???

I for one need to reread EVERYTHING.  :ascared
What do you call a plaza? A plaza is another work for a park. And temporary markets usually take place on plazas.

Sorry, my bad. Got a little to excited! But the painting still takes place before the high wire, if it was around lunchtime, right?

Are ALL the teams together at the high wire or are these just a clump after a bunch? It's halfway through the leg and they're all still stuck with the pack?

Maybe some of the teams got lost, or took a bus together. It doesn't mean anything.

I took the press photos and arranged them in chronological order.
Looks like Monique and Shawne are DANA is way behind - still doing the tightrope at 14:31.
We see Brent (I think) DAN doing the ropes at 09:44 followed by Dana SHAWNE at 9:55 and Michael at 10:01.

edited to fix my errors in identifying teams...

Regarding Wulff Castle, the teams had that clue at LAX, so very unlikely it was the pit stop, but rather the first clue location.

Also, comparing times, Dan is on the wire at 9:44 and reading the clue at 9:46, so the Route Marker clues they are shown reading are after the Road Block.

So JeJo finish the RB before Dan/Jordan then Steve/Allie(who you can see on the wire behind Dan).

Very good points! But I don't think we can really call this a RB if two team members are doing it, even if CBS does.

Ya, but thats the only evidence we have of both team members doing the "roadblock". Is it possible Adrian couldn't do it and Dana had to take over? What kind of penalty would that entail?

I think that's Dana on the wires at 14:31, not the Moms.  She's wearing a black shirt.  One of the Moms (Shawne) is on the wire at 09:55.

Maybe Dana and Adrian both had to do the wires due to some new form of U-turn?

The standard penalty for non-completion of a ROADBLOCK by the designated person is 4 hours after the next team arrives. If there are no teams left to arrive, I don't know what they do in that case but it would hardly matter since that team will be eliminated unless some strange things happen.

To clarify: This is a ROUTE INFO task (provided we can actually see correctly). The clue Dan & Jordan are holding is clearly a route info clue. This is why we see both team members doing it. It is MONIQUE & SHAWNE who are with the pack at the wires task, and ADRIAN & DANA at 14:31. It is clearly labeled this way in the press release. Adrian & Dana are most likely way far behind. :(

BUT, if the Wulf Castle visit is first, then I'm going to SPECULATE that the second flight is Adrian & Dana, Jody & Shannon, Brent & Caite, Carol & Brandy, and Jet & Cord, all the teams who weren't seen in the 9:30 to 10:00 group.

So I wonder whom it looks like is going first?  Looking like either Monique & Shawne or Dana & Adrian right now, from what the photo evidence is hinting it.

I'm leaning toward Adrian & Dana based on the EXIF data at the high wires task.

According to the EXIF data, Dan and Jordan are looking at the Route Info clue after Dan completes the wire task.  Joe and Heidi have a Road Block clue in the 09:30 pic.

The only shot of Adrian dangling is from the promo, which could, in fact be from an entirely different episode, assuming, of course, that they are not eliminated in epsiode 1.

I think the Route Info envelope comes after the tightrope task. The speculation is that D&J are opening up the Route info after completing the tightrope.
Note that Steve & Allie and Dan & Jordan are shown opening a Route Info task after they did the tightrope...

**SPECULATION**

After looking again at the promo, perhaps Adrian injures himself in the fall and cannot continue.  We've never seen this before, but perhaps there is a 4-hr penalty incurred which will allow Dana to complete the RB and continue racing.  This would explain why they are approximately 4 hrs behind when we see Dana on the wires.

**/SPECULATION**

Guessing the big gap between the first set of teams on the ropes and the second (Jodi/Shannon, Monique/Shawne) is due to bus schedules? One bus leaves Santiago and then another one 2-3 hours later?

I'm thinking Wolf Castle after Bus Trip then Paint or is that after. RB clue to go to the tightrope (thus Joe and Heidi running through streets with RB clue in hand) get there do it, other side Route Info. Possibly they may have to do 1 more thing but I doubt it and then Pitstop!

That is Adrian on the wire so the only possible explanation is he injures himself. It has to be!

Completion of Wire:
1st: Joe and Heidi - probably
2nd: Jordan and Jeff
3rd: Dan and Jordan
4th: Steve and Allie
5th: Monique and Shawne
6th: Louie and Mike
7th-10th: Carol and Brandy, Jet and Cord, Jody and Shannon and Brent and Caite
11th: Dana and Adrian (I think)

It looks to me like you can get across any way you want.  If the pictures and times are correct, Dan gets the next clue before Allie, so it doesn't look like it hurt to be hanging rather than walking on top.

If you ask me...it's probably best to try it once, fall, try again, fall, continue by hanging. You'd likely exert more energy trying to climb back to a standing position than you would by pulling yourself.

Got it, J-Squeeze. The Route Info is being read on the starting Artilleria side. Either the high wire is not a Roadblock, or the team member that does it has to return to the south side.

Oh! Looks like teams start on the north side and have to work their way UP instead of down the wire, starting on the Villaseca side and working their way south to the Artilleria side. What suggests this to me: the clue box with the Route Info is facing the wires, not the Ascensor Artilleria, where teams would come from if they came from the South.

So we have teams taking the Ascensor Villaseca up the north hill, a Roadblock with one team member crossing south to the Artilleria side with the partner miraculously (?) appearing across the valley, and ending with teams getting a Route Info and very likely heading down the path to the touristy Paseo 21 de Mayo and the Ascensor Artilleria to catch a taxi or whatever.

No. The area is on a peninsula sticking off the west coast of Chile. The water you see to the right is to the east, but it's a bay that comes around the peninsula. The ocean is to the west, but it's on the other side of the hill.

No teams were spotted boarding the DFW flight.  The Miami flight was delayed slightly and arrived about 40 minutes after the DFW flight.

Jeff and Jordan were supposedly on the Miami flight, which was the later of the two flights, but they seem to be in the earliest group at the high wire challenge.

Mike and Louis along with Catie and Brent were on the same Miami to Chile flight that Jeff and Jordan were on.

Guessing the big gap between the first set of teams on the ropes and the second (Jodi/Shannon, Monique/Shawne) is due to bus schedules? One bus leaves Santiago and then another one 2-3 hours later?

Have we established that there were two flights?  I thought they all ended up on the same flight.

Bus schedules from Santiago to Valparaiso may have spread out the teams, though.

Hello!
There has to be a second flight.
I live in Santiago, and buses from here to Valparaíso or Viña leave every 5 minutes from 4 different bus terminals, so there is no bunching for buses.
One thing that calls my attention is that the teams, just arriving at the airport, have to get inside the city and go to the Tur Bus terminal which is in downtown (by the way, it is depicted incorrectly in the MAPS! thread, you posted the google earth screenshot of the headquarters of TurBus, not the main terminal).
So here's the thing: Turbus is a bus company, and all of its buses leave and arrive from this specific terminal (following its name) but the terminal is not exclusively for this company, there are a couple more bus enterprises that leave from there. Anyway, maybe the route info in LA stated especificaly to take a bus from that terminal (which makes nonsense otherwise, because it's not practical to travel from the airport to the downtown to take a bus to Viña, and the Santiago airport is on the Way to the coast, and because there is a terminal only for Viña-Valpo buses next to the nearest Metro station from the airport (Pajaritos Station, which is seen in Leg 4 of TARLA)
Or this is not specified in the route marker, spreading the teams in different terminals throughout Santiago, but this will make a difference of time of 1 hour aprox. as most, so that gap between the first and second group at the wire has to be another flight.

And this is my first post.

If all the rope-walkers are facing the ocean, does this mean Adrian falls  :iok at the end rather than the beginning? (And does anyone else think the clothesline is phony? :js:)
I think Adrian definately falls because he seems too close too the ground

Five hours between teams? That sounds less like a bunching (bus or plane) and more like an unexpected delay or penalty.

Do we know anyone else who's with Dana? They could be alone at the back... (Or hell, they screwed with the camera time.)

It seems Jody and Shannon, Dana and Adrian and possibly Brent and Caite and Jet and Cord fall behind which is possibly why Jody and Shannon are ELIMINATED 2nd because they catch a later bus and J/C and B/C are much stronger. But I'm pretty sure Dana and Adrian go first which is sad.

I assume someone wanted to save time by changing money while connecting in Brazil, thinking that all of South America used the same currency. Will be a laugh to watch  :snicker:

But did we have anything on the teams connecting through Brazil?

Teams on the one flight connected in Miami, and might have made the mistake there.

But why a team could have done that whereever they exchanged currency when they should have remembered they were headed to Chile suggests a violation of the crucial rule to read the frakking clue completely.

Yeah, it'll be hilarious -- for us, that is.  I don't think it'll be hilarious for the team who makes the bad error.  But unless it's either Dana or Adrian who makes the error, it most likely won't be a game-ending error.

The teams of the CBS series "The Amazing Race 16" perform "Active Route Marker" in Valparaiso, Chile in which they must find a ladder and 2 cans of paint, then search for a picturesque house matching their particular color to paint, in order to receive their next clue.

Yeah, that seems very likely, but at least we have TWO tasks after getting to the first destination city, unlike last season, when there was only one task in Japan (of course there was the starting-line elim. back then.)

I haven't seen that terminology before, but it does seem to be a general task that is not a detour, roadblock (or speedbump) which teams have to complete to receive the next clue.

No, it's just a regular route marker (otherwise they would have announced it).

So, EP 1601 is pretty much:

1st 15 minutes: intro + getting to airport
2nd 15 minutes: Wulff's Castle/Roadblock
3rd 15 minutes: House painting.
last 15 minutes: check-in at pit stop.

3 tasks, if you count getting to LAX as one. This should be interesting.

If it leads to elimination, I say it's Joseph & Heidi. If it doesn't, it could be anyone. I'm not sure it would be Adrian & Dana since they don't look like they could finish first anyway.

I don't think the first team receives a penalty this week.  I think there was a typo on their part due to haste

it reads:
Quote
Which team will be 1st 2 the mat + will fall behind w/ a penalty?

but it could very easily be:
Which team will be 1st to the mat and who will fall behind with a penalty

with all the shorthand in that tweet, it's obvious they wrote it quickly, and could've easily lost a word in the process

it happens to me all the time

If the mistake is nearby in Valpo, production might make the team go back for a do-over; but since a penalty is mentioned, the mistake might have been back in Santiago or the trip to LAX.

Yeah, Linda and Steve would've been slapped with time penalty if they didn't come in the last place on Leg 2 for a private transportation. But, it was a little strange because Kris used a private transportation as well (Linda wasn't the only one who got lost in the mountains!)

I thought this should go here it is a review for episode 1:
TV Review: The Amazing Race Season 16 Premiere
Could you imagine walking a tightrope the length of a football field in Chile? That’s what 11 teams did on the 16th season premier of The Amazing Race (CBS, February 14 from 8-9 pm). The one team to finish first after 12 legs of the race will win one million dollars.
The show starts in downtown Los Angeles where the 11 teams were introduced. The teams included:
Caite and Brent – dating models (by the way, Caite was Miss South Carolina and was the beauty who said that there are many people in the US who don’t have maps and that’s why they can’t locate the USA on a map. A Youtube video with Caite’s answer went viral across the Internet)
Louis and Michael – detectives
Steve and Allie – father/daughter team
Jeff and Jordan – dating (they were both contestants on Big Brother and now are dating as a result of the show)
Monique and Shawne – "momtrepreneurs" (the two are mothers and attorneys)
Jet and Cord – cowboys
Andrian and Dana – childhood sweethearts now 17 years married
Jody and Shannon – grandmother/granddaughter team (interestingly, both ran in half-marathons and the grandmother is 71 years old)
Carol and Brandy – lesbian couple
Dan and Jordan – brothers (one is gay, the other isn’t)
Joe and Heidi – married couple
The couples were told that their first challenge was to take public transportation to LAX airport where they would get on a flight to Santiago, Chile.
Phil Keoghan, the show’s host, told the teams that only three will get on the first plane and all the remaining teams will go one hour later. It was exciting to watch as the 11 teams made their way to the airport.

At the airport, the cowboy team decided to change their money over. They exchanged it for Brazilian money instead of Chilean money, thinking it was the same thing. When they got to Chile they were surprised to learn that they were not allowed to board the bus with Brazilian money and had to change it over to Chilean.
The teams took a bus to Valparaiso, Chile, which is the San Francisco of South America, and were told to walk across a thin cable the size of a football field. As I watched this, I was on edge. Some teams made it across like a breeze, but others were shaking and actually fell off the cable! It was frightening. You almost felt as if it could have been you on the cable!
When that challenge was completed, the teams were told to ride a funicular to a residential area where they were to paint the outside of homes before getting their next clue. I never laughed so hard as when I saw one of the teams walking into a home and actually painting the interior. The Chilean painters were laughing and saying that they didn’t know what they were doing… it was hysterical!
I’ve been watching The Amazing Race with my family since it first went on the air. It’s one of those rare reality shows that we actually watch. We all enjoy it for the excitement and to get a sense of other cities around the globe. I’ll tell you one thing, after watching this show, I’m thinking that my next vacation will be in Chile!

The EXIF on the Jody/Shannon shot must be whacked, right? Wulff Castle is the first destination in Chile, and they're already 3 hours behind?

Could we factor in the five hour time difference into it, which would give a Jody/Shannon (we're told it's Wulff Castle) shot at 13.04 and the Dana/Adrian shot at 14.31? The rest of the zipline photos were presumably taken between 14.42 and 15.01...

The Dallas (arrival scheduled 9.45am, actual 9.47am) and Miami (arrival scheduled 10.10am, actual 10.20am) flights arrive within half an hour of each other, so there could easily be catching up and all, and I'm not even sure if TPTB just pretended it was an hour's difference. But here are the three teams not seen together at the zipline: Carol/Brandy, Joe/Heidi, Jody/Shannon.

The F4 and Jordan & Jeff were shown on a promo for this episode.

Man.  Jordan & Jeff aside, they're not even trying to hide their finalists anymore, are they?

Also very important: the review confirmed TAR 16 has 12 legs.

3 in SA, 3 in Europe, 1 in Africa, 4 in Asia, and the finale.

How are 3 legs in South America and 3 legs in Europe confirmed? Aren't 4 legs in SA and 2 in Europe still a possibility? As far as I know, the destination of the fourth leg is still up for speculation, with the most likely candidate being Buenos Aires. Did I miss something? ???

The EXIF on the Jody/Shannon shot must be whacked, right? Wulff Castle is the first destination in Chile, and they're already 3 hours behind?
I think the caption is wrong for the photo - if you look closely I think you can see the blue of a route info in Shannon's hand.

I believe a good amount of people are leaning towards another leg somewhere between Liverpool and Northern France

although, Buenos Aires is still a major possibility...  :duno:

It is very irritating that they try to tell us going into every season who the "most important" teams are every season. And then most of the fans take the bait and make the F4 teams their favorites, no matter who they are. If they are promoted, they must be the best.

As for me, I will choose my OWN favorites, regardless of who is/isn't shown. Portray them equally like you once did (back in the days before TAR 13).

They could Switchback "Perro/Tango" and that would be great with another Big Brother team here.

'The Amazing Race 16': five reasons to tune in

It's no small feat that "The Amazing Race" is set to launch its 16th season this weekend, likely thanks in part to the strength of its casting ("Big Brother" contestants notwithstanding), its far-flung locales and its eyebrow-raising host, Phil Keoghan.

All three elements return for the season premiere of "The Amazing Race," which airs Sunday night on CBS. Rather sadly, it's only a one-hour season opener this time around, but it's filled with so many jaw-dropping moments and gasp-inducing lines of dialogue that you'll want to cancel your Valentine's Day plans to stay home and watch. (Or, at the very least, set your DVR in advance.)

Still debating about whether or not to join Phil and friends for another race around the world? Here are five reasons why you must tune in on Sunday.

Mapquest: Yes, it's sad but true that this cycle's batch of contestants seem to have either been sleeping through class or didn't bother to turn up at all. (Or the educational system is even worse off than we thought.) Twenty-year-old Caite Upton, best known as the former Miss South Carolina in the Miss Teen USA pageant, says that she wants to overcome the embarrassing flub she made during the 2007 pageant when she stated that "I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as ... " (The response was to a question about maps.) Putting aside maps, she and her partner, fellow model Brent Horne, have trouble in the first leg simply reading and following the clues appropriately and fail to realize that they've made a major error on their first day. Meanwhile, former "Big Brother" contestants Jordan Lloyd and Jeff Schroeder have their own problems to contend with as Jordan seems to have never heard of the country Chile and repeatedly — to Jeff and even to airline counter personnel — refers to the South American country as "China." (Wow.)

Clueless contestants: It doesn't stop there. Brothers/cowboys Jet and Cord McCoy (yes, these are their real names) exchange money at LAX ... for Brazilian currency, believing it to be the "closest" to Chilean money. And one team — I'm not saying which one — mistakenly begin to paint the inside of someone's home when they fail to pay attention to their clue, much to the amusement of the professional construction workers and painters inside attempting to renovate this home.

Texas Hold'Em: I haven't been able to stop chuckling over the aforementioned cowboy brothers Jet and Cord. Despite their inability to select the proper currency for Chile, they have a true Texas cowboy approach to just about everything in life. Even when faced with setbacks, these two have an aw-shucks reaction that's infinitely as amusing as it is sweet. Even when climbing across cables 150 feet above Santiago, their gentlemanly nature can't help but shine through as they make small talk with fellow contestants. I'm curious to see if behind their dimpled exterior lies the beating hearts of true competitors.

Exotic locations: The first leg of this cycle takes the racers to such exotic locations as Santiago, Chile, and the oft-rumored-but-rarely-seen Los Angeles subway system, as teams must find their own way to LAX using public transportation, much to the shock and horror of several contestants, including Angelenos Carol Rosenfeld and Brandy Snow. While some opt for the flyaway from Union Station, others attempt to take the subway. In both cases, they are proof positive as to why Angelenos love their cars so darn much.

Iron-pumping granny: Yes, there is an actual triathalon-running, iron-pumping grandmother in the race this season. Meet 71-year-old Jody Kelly, who is racing with her granddaughter Shannon Foster. Among her goals, Jody lists, "Finish a half Ironman triathlon. Finish a full marathon. Publish another book. Motivate people to become active. Climb more Colorado mountains. Walk the Appalachian Trail. Go trekking in Norway. Bicycle through the Netherlands. Develop a TV show featuring elderly athletes." At a time when more and more people are leaning toward non-active lifestyles, Jody's grit and determination to outdo people 50 years younger is refreshing and inspirational. While I'd be surprised if this team lasts in the race more than a few legs, I have to say that I'm extremely impressed by her spirit and can-do attitude about tackling anything that the race throws her way. After all, she is the oldest person to ever participate in "The Amazing Race."

I don't want to spoil the rest of the fun season opener, but I hope that you'll join the latest batch of "TAR" contestants in painting the town red this Valentine's Day as these teams set off on yet another race around the world. See you at the Pit Stop.

The high wire walk is definitely the ROADBLOCK  task.  Phil was a guest on the Bonnie Hunt talkathon this morning and he showed a clip from Sunday's first episode.  The clip was Phil on camera describing the ROADBLOCK task with the Red Title Card with people doing the walk.   He also hints that one team member can't finish the task (a la last seasons water slide) and that the other team member finishes the walk.  No talk about a penalty being given, but if this is the case that another team member takes over, then there must be some kind of penalty given.

The writer who wrote a review for episode 1 gave away who was eliminated first, but I think we already knew this. This is what they wrote:

http://www.projo.com/tv/content/lb-amazing_race_02-15-10_RKHDN8J_v10.285d70a.html

2 R.I. teams still on ‘Amazing Race"

The Rhode Islanders, all four of them, are still in the race.
“The Amazing Race” on CBS started its 16th season Sunday with 11 two-person teams vying to win a race around the world, and win $1 million. And two of those teams are from Rhode Island.
The team of Louis D. Stravato, 47, of Bristol, and Michael Naylor, 45, of Warwick, friends and police officers, are still in the running. And so is the team of Jordan and Dan Pious, ages 22 and 24, a consultant and financial advisor respectively, brothers from Barrington.
Sunday’s show involved all the teams beginning on the outskirts of Los Angles and getting their first travel challenge: to take public transportation and get to LAX Airport and take a plane to Santiago, Chile. There, the teams each received cans of paint, had to visit a particular street, find the partially painted house that matched their paint color and finish the job.
Then the teams had to have one member traverse a 300-foot gorge, shuffling across on cables 120 feet above the ground, hooked to a cable with a safety line.
That’s where one team was eliminated.
Dana and Adrian Davis, 39 and 40 respectively, of Arlington, Texas, were eliminated from the show because Adrian Davis didn’t make it all the way across the gorge, succumbing to fatigue.
Now there are 10 remaining teams. The next episode airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on CBS (Ch. 4 and 12).

I guess that's why Dana was seen on the wire -- Adrian got too fatigued.  And they could've been penalized -- unless they already were in last.

Beauty queen bungles 'Amazing Race' debut

(AP) — LOS ANGELES - Caite Upton is already not following directions on "The Amazing Race."
The former Miss Teen South Carolina, who famously flubbed a 2007 pageant question involving maps, and her boyfriend, Brent Horne, were in the front of the pack on the CBS reality series' 16th season premiere Sunday, but they didn't heed instructions to ride a funicular train and received a 30-minute penalty, dropping them from second to seventh place.
Ultimately, married high school sweethearts Adrian and Dana Davis were the first team eliminated. Husky husband Adrian twice attempted the Roadblock challenge, which required contestants to scale a tight rope, but he tumbled both times, which allowed the 10 other teams to pass them on the race's first leg.

I was actually teasing...it is an awful thing when someone entrusted with a preview of the episode for review makes a mistake and releases the info early. But I am sure whoever did it feels awfull. Mistakes do happen in life, they did all they could to backtrack, and hopefully will institute some checks. I just feel sorry for the couple involved, and for those who avoid spoilers and were inadvertently spoiled. At least if you are here, you want the info, but many do not like to even know so much as the locations.

I love the detecting and the finding of spoilers, and LOVE to watch to see how all our hard earned spoilers play out. But even I like some mystery and some surprises along the way. :funny:

I'm assuming the Dana shot at 7.30pm is after their elimination, then, with all teams checking in before that?

The premiere standup was strange. Instead of the much nicer Eastern Columbia building (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_Columbia_Building) next door, he's standing on the nondescript May Company addition (http://wikimapia.org/12232460/May-Company-Addition-1929) (bird's eye here (http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/#/6z59px74lsy5wh1b)).

Another editing sleight-of-hand: why would a bus terminal at the airport have a bus leaving for... the Aeropuerto?

This is the schedule for the Pajaritos Terminal in downtown Santiago. Turbus runs buses from the airport to this terminal.

Was Wulff castle ever a part of it? (future tarcon question ) We can see the teams arriving at the main terminal at Valpo, not Vina. And we can see them leave in taxis from the station (the Congress building and Claudia Cafe can be seen in the background). We hear teams asking for Villaseca; if the audio is spliced in, they did a great job with it.

Wow! That episode was quite a whirlwind. I'm not sure there was even time to draw breath.

Hopefully the pace slows down enough, otherwise we're not going to know half of the teams by the time the end rolls around.

Jeff & Jordan: These two surprised me this episode. I didn't think they would start off so dominant (or even be dominant, for that matter). I really hope that somehow Jordan gets at least a little smarter before Leg 2, so we don't have to watch them make clueless mistakes while still being successful. On a side note, though, it would be funny to see them eliminated due to a careless mistake. :snicker:

Monique & Shawne: Faster than I anticipated. These two (despite the spoilers) actually appear to have great potential to be a threat. Possibly my favorite team now, although it's still hard to know who to like and who the villains should be.

Jet & Cord: Impressive catchup! They went from last place all the way up to third by being fast and smart when necessary. I think. It was actually quite hard to tell just how they ended up in third place. But obviously they did it, so they look like they'll be a tough team to beat.

Steve & Allison: I like these two, but they haven't made a very smart first impression, either. The problem that many teams seem to have this season is hurrying up without actually knowing what they are doing (see Brent & Caite also). But I think they will improve as they get used to the race. We'll see.

Joe & Heidi: Seems Joe has a few random skills. Knowing the transportation system of LA was useful this episode (until the other teams beat them to the first flight). Not a lot more to go on yet, but I think they will be portrayed as the Lance & Keri of the season. Which is a shame, because so far I see little evidence of them being obnoxious. But I guess we'll see in Leg 2, as we saw in the preview.

Carol & Brandy: These two have some good entertainment value going for them. Usually teams who have that will go pretty far. Lot's of good one-liners. I think they're greatest asset will be keeping level heads and thinking through things before rushing ahead and doing them carelessly.

Brent & Caite: They're going to have the storyline of the season: proving that she's not clueless. Unfortunately they seem to have failed with that from the very first leg. I'll be rooting for them to fall out. Not sure why, I just don't get good vibes from them. Plus, I don't want to have that awful storyline shoved down my throat the whole season, and I sure don't want to see them win.

Daniel & Jordan: Don't have much to say about these two yet. Losing a paint brush is a rather trivial mistake that I'm not sure warranted a penalty. But then again, when have we seen any team lose the provided supplies for a task before? These two could become a threat, but not until they become a little more careful about how they perform tasks.

Louie & Michael: Looks like we'll be getting the Globetrotter edit from them. Only they aren't quite as entertaining. They're likable though, but it's hard to say if they're likable enough to root for at this point.

Jody & Shannon: Love these two already! I really hope they get a chance on the next leg to climb out of last place. They're low finish seems to have been due to fate rather than skill. If they're equalized again, I think they will be competitive. But right now I just have an awful feeling that they will be last for the entire next episode, which would be sad.

Adrian & Dana: Oh well. They gave it their best. Another team that I realize how much I'm going to miss. If they would've just thought a little more about their Roadblock choice they would still be in it. Uchenna & Joyce and Chip & Kim will apparently not be duplicated this season, which is a shame.

As a whole, the first episode was kind of a letdown for me. I was excited at the start, but the ridiculously fast-paced editing and the over-portrayal of all our wonderful "stunt teams" turned me off rather quickly, and left me confused. Oh, and also the cluelessness of almost all of the racers. This season looks like it will beat TAR 13 in racer cluelessness if they continue to race like they did in this leg. The vital lesson for everyone seems to be: slow down, read the clue, and think through what you are doing.

Let's not forget the mandatory "first leg rest period", which also appears to be edited out.      I'm sure there is a connection to the castle there somewhere...  ;)  (remember the prior seasons "green room" & Tokyo Tower editing slight-of-hand).  :groan:

Hmm, though. The 12.20pm bus is scheduled to arrive in Valparaiso at 1.50pm, and Dan/Jordan finish the cable walk at 2.46pm. Enough time to squeeze in Castillo Wulff?

TAR 16's intro was the complete opposite of TAR 15. The tasks were MUCH more improved, but there was just too much to do...and not enough airing time. CBS needs to give one of its better performing series a longer intro: 90 minutes should have fit everything in perfectly.

They are not a PDA type of couple from what I remember and Jordan pulled away when Jeff went in for a kiss several times on BB. I doubt that will change now that they are on Tar.

I wish it was a two hour episode tonight. Just when I was getting into it and starting to like other teams it was over.

Some of my observations:

Jeff and Jordan seemed to get the most air time. Will that change?

I thought Jody and Shannon liked the Cowboy team. Even though they made the mistake with the exchange money they still were likable.

Could Jordan and Dan be any more annoying? Catie made that flub years ago. It was funny the first time he mocked her then it became cruel.

Brent is a very supportive partner from what I observed saying "I love baby" ect. There was a point when they snipped at one another when painting the houses, but they recovered while waiting out thier pentaly.

Adrian and Dana were very nice and it was sad they did not pick Dana to do the tightrope. I bet they wished they could go back and change that.

Phil looked great as always. He always seems genuine when giving advice to the eliminated team.

Now for my new favorites Louie and Mike. I love this team and when they call eachother "baby".

I knew I missed a couple of teams Carol and Brady seemed snobby. Steve seems like he will get on Allie's nerves. Joe and Heidi seem to work well together. Shawne and Monique coming in second was nice.

I hope I did not miss anything. If I did I will add to it later lol

This was an exciting first leg! It was just the first leg and we saw two teams slapped with a penalty, several teams screwing up on the painting, and one of the more memorable eliminations. It was sad to see Dana and Adrian go. Adrian tried so hard, he never gave up, it just really sucked. But well, it's all part of the race, everyone just caught up.

Jeff and Jordan - I didn't expect them to do so well on the first leg. But great job coming in first. They seem a rather funny team, Jeff with his comments.

Dan and Jordan - Hmm, they seem like a pretty interesting team. I'm still getting a Sam and Dan vibe from them. I wouldn't be surprised of any yelling matches from them in time to come. But I'm still liking them.

Brent and Caite - I don't know, but this team seems rather weird to me still. Is it just me, or is Brent really emotionless and robotic? That's what I get from him, he seems almost detached from the world or something.

Jodi and Shannon - I love this team, they're just soooo sweet to each other. But Shannon will probably be a liability to the team, I just can't see them going far. Which is a pity, I really, really like them.

These are the teams that stood out for me this leg. I still find the cast kinda boring, but the first leg was great. Looking forward to more legs to come!

Here is my thoughts for this leg of the race:

1. This race is too fast-paced for me! I can't cope with its speed! Well, I'm saying this negatively. From Phil's Spiels, I really think I'm missing all of previous TAR's intros. And once they were in Chile, everything was fast, especially in the painting. They did not show the other teams while they do the paintings.

2. Cast is fine. I love Jody and Shannon, Jeff and Jordan, Carol and Brandy, Monique and Shawne, and Jordan and Dan (calling, I love you Bro! :lol3:). Others, lack of personality. :groan:

3. Love the dynamics! But wish that they could have shown more of the interaction of the teams, not all their penalties.

4. Wulff's Castle was not shown. :'(

Really nice season premiere, Better than the last season's.

Very exciting episode and really good tasks.
I like the teams also but my faves would be Jordan & Jeff, Dan & Jordan, and Brent & Caitlin and I'm interested with the cowboys and Jody & Shannon :hearts:

We'll see about the other teams, some are boring I admit   (:;) but they're probably going to be better in the coming legs so don't judge them now they probably haven't shown their true colors yet!

At least Dana & Adrian did their best though. No kidding that roadblock was really difficult! :groan:

Overall, Great season premier! Looking forward for the coming episodes!  :jumpy:

Really good tasks.

Sorry, didn't mean to argue, but I really disagree with these two.

Last season and Season 14's was better than this. But this is better than S13's (which is also in SA  :res:)

Really good tasks, yah, have the potential. But if they were to make it much difficult than painting a small dot (it seems so  :lol3:) in the wall, epicness would have surfaced.

We can see teams riding cabs along the corniche, sunlight coming in from the left side. Unfortunately, the road twists and turns so without some landmarks it's hard to figure if they're traveling north or south. Does anyone have the "special thanks"? If Wulff is included, that would nail it down.

Checked the credits and NO mention of the "castilo" BUT there is a nod to "Municipality Vina del Mar".... along with Municipality Valparaiso, Santiago Airport...

BTW Neobie, they give credit to TWO other bus(?) terminals... the Condor Terminal Los Heroes and the Terminal Rodoviario(?)...

My thoughts on the cast.

Joe and Heidi: I think their first leg went well because there's not that much pressure as later legs of being eliminated.

Steve and Allie: This team is funny.  LOL at painting someone's house

Jeff and Jordan: They're in my neutral side but they did better than i expected.

Brent and Caite: I guess they can be a strong team but they should've read the clue instead of following their "gut".

Monique and Shawne: I had low expectations for them but their creeping to my favorite list.

Carol and Brandy: They're in my neatral list.

Dan and Jordan:  I don't understand why they keep on making fun of Caite.

Michael and Louie: "9th?!?  (:;)" LOL! loved them.

Jody and Shannon: They seem nice and friendly.  One of my favorites.

Jet and Cord:  They're in my favorite list too.  How did they climb from last to 3rd?

Adrian and Dana:  It's too bad they were the first eliminated.  But before the race they were in my neatral section.

Overall, this is going to be a good season.

So... Can anyone figure out how they made it from the airport to the Terminal Pajaritos? By bus, or taxi?

Both the airport buses that pass the Terminal Pajaritos continue to Terminal Los Heroes, but I don't see why any team would want to head there unless they missed their stop. Valparaiso buses only leave from Pajaritos as far as I know.

We see all the teams getting off at the Rodoviario Terminal in Valparaiso at least, so no confusion there.

Not sure if we saw Alameda in Leg One, they probably credited it for Terminal Sur in Leg Two?

I really like Jeff and Jordan alot. Very positive team and my liking for them just increased loads. Brent and Caite... is pretty eerrgggh to me. OMG, i love Shawne and Monique, very positive team who went from the back to second place! Same with Jet and Cord, how did they do that??

Steve and Allie painting the entire house was hilarious, but they along with the asian couple didn't get much screentime this leg. Carol and Brandy got decent screentime while the 1/2 gay brother team (the gay one) was pretty annoying. I don't like Michael and Louie and am glad that my pre show vibes about them stayed. LOVED THE GRANDMA/GRANDDAUGHTER TEAM!!!

LIKE

Carol/Brandy
Jeff/Jordan

DISLIKE

The RB was challenging but we didn't really see much of the culture in Chile. :( That roadblock could have been done anywhere in the world and was TARA 2's Singapore starting line task i believe....

As for the painting of the building..... boring.

Not a very good season premiere for me i think. It seems to be like any other regular episode... and using the bus to fetch them to the starting line??? Where's the helicopters we had for TAR 10???

And public transportation drama is much more refreshing and less bunchy than airport drama.

The 12.20pm Condor bus to Vina del Mar and the 12.20pm Tur Bus to Valparaiso fit the schedules for the Pajaritos Terminal though... And according to the Wordpress link, Curacavi, Linea Azul and Condor are found at Pajaritos, not Alameda. Did the teams split up?

Ah, they took the airport bus into Santiago. That's where Jet/Cord have their money issues - the interior of the bus is different as the second bus pulls into Valparaiso.

Really nice season premiere, Better than the last season's.

TAR 14 has the better intro, but TAR 15's first leg was horrid in comparison to this one. So many lost opportunities in Japan.

It was Mike or Louis (not sure which) while looking for transportation in Los Angeles.

:groan:  OK, I think I get what you're thinking, Neobie.  If they did take the bus from the airport to Pajariots Bus Terminal, then all they had to do was to get off and get on another bus to Valparaiso.  However, according to this blog (http://www.elblogdesantiago.cl/2008/07/29/como-llegar-a-santiago-en-bus/) or this translated blog (http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.elblogdesantiago.cl%2F2008%2F07%2F29%2Fcomo-llegar-a-santiago-en-bus%2F&sl=es&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8) the airport bus also stops at the other Santiago bus terminals.

Jury is out as to which they used to get to Valparaiso, but I think in the second leg they take the bus from Valparaiso to Terminal Alameda, and then walk across the street to Terminal Sur to get to southern Chile.
Otherwise, why are they seen entering the bus terminal from the south side, when the main entrance is on the north side.   :umn:

Looks like they upgraded the TVs, but with trapezoidal blue-and-yellow number signs, alternating dark and light grey trellised roof, red banner by the side... it's a good match for the first bus at least!

More bus station madness... We still haven't figured it out yet have we?

Jody/Shannon are at the Alameda Terminal... But we also see Louie/Michael at the Pajaritos Terminal. They got magically bunched together by editing!

Jet/Cord arriving at Valparaiso says, "I see the green team!" Does that also mean they took a different bus from a different terminal? Don't have a shot of them at either Alameda or Pajaritos, the shots we have are all of the Airport Terminal.

Confusing enough?

I might be able to help a little (or make it worse ). In JeJo's cab we see them approaching an overpass. The only one that matches is halfway between the bus terminal and Wulff castle, in the opposite direction from Villaseca. Kmz attached; the thing in the median is a Valpo art logo (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/9069708).

OK, here's as much as I could get from the footage! Tried to account individually for each team. Note that the journey from Alameda is 20min longer than from Pajaritos.

12.15pm from Pajaritos
Dana/Adrian, Jeff/Jordan, Brent/Caite, Monique/Shawne
(Allie is standing next to the 12.15pm bus when Brent/Caite get on, not sure why they missed it?)

12.20pm from Pajaritos
Steve/Allie, Carol/Brandy
(Dan/Jordan not shown at Pajaritos, but arrive in Valparaiso together with Carol/Brandy)
(Joe/Heidi not shown at Pajaritos, but at Valparaiso are shown between Steve/Allie and Carol/Brandy)

From Pajaritos, first bus after 12.20pm
Michael/Louie

From Alameda
Jody/Shannon

Unknown
Jet/Cord, arrive in Valparaiso right after Jody/Shannon
(They say "I see the green team, they're ahead of us," which suggests they took a different bus?)

I noted this in the episode discussion thread, but there's a bit of irony when Phil notes that Valparaiso is the "San Fran of South America", and the final destination city is in fact San Fran.

I know. I spot the little things like that.

This is from a bus discussion over in the Pickem thread:
The shuttle bus (left) matches the photo of the G shuttle that WP found. The Flyaway bus (right) was a bit confusing at first: Flyaway busses are uniformly blue. But the wiki article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flyaway_bus) mentions that they sometimes roll other stock (and you can see part of a Flyaway placard in the window) so...that checks out.
The editing of the journeys to LAX seems straightforward except for Team OK. First we see them running south on Beaudry approaching 2nd with the Pious bros. Then they're at 5th and Grand next to GB Harb and Sons asking someone for a bus station (??). They're directed east on 5th: the Pershing metro stop is nearby, but that's about it. Next they're on Flower between 5th and 6th, crossing the street to Maguire Gardens: backtracking. Then they disappear, only to reappear at LAX (supposedly) with the G shuttle teams.

My  :2cents: : The 3/8 split on airplane seats was a waste. Even if a team misses the first flight (ignoring the actual mechanical troubles), they're still with the "pack."
At the other end of the scale, an 8/3 split would eliminate some of the drama (we've already seen the editors go to great lengths to disguise the fact that a particular team is an obvious goner). Ideally? 6/5 or 7/4 IMO.

I believe this is the first time all of the teams were on the same flight(s) out of LAX and into the first city of the first leg. I suspect the first three teams were concerned about the time needed to make the connecting flight at DFW with the mechanical delay ay LAX, and the reasoning seems to have been along the lines of "better the devil you know than the Devil

Second, teams have no way of knowing what they will encounter once they get to that first clue box in the first country or how the teams might be stratified with the tasks and route makers for the leg. So from that perspective it made a lot of sense to me for those first three teams to switch to the other flight.

I'll bet that TPTB were stunned to see the top three teams make this choice, but it was a rational option under the circumstances.  Those three teams certainly did not want to be the last three teams arriving at the airport in Santiago.
