Well some might say that basketball is a hood sport but many basketball players are from the suburbs as well and I don't want to be called out for stereotyping anyone so take it for what its worth.

 y'all may be reading too much into this...  I bet the trotters say this when they open the first clue at the start of the leg, and find that there is a second leg in Dubai.  The first was in the city (hood) and the second will be in the desert (suburb).  Just doin' the same country twice.   ;D

Not if you believe Dutch and the reports from the Netherlands that only 6 teams make it there from Dubai.

Not if you believe Dutch and the reports from the Netherlands that only 6 teams make it there from Dubai.

This raises an interesting question. Have there ever been two consecutive legs in a country and both legs ended with elimination points?

It would be fun if the first one was an NEL, and the second had a mid-point and pit stop elimination, as was the case in leg 1 of TAR 10 in Beijing.

To answer your question, yes. ;) The two Burkina Faso legs in TAR12 were elimination points, as were the two Chile legs in TAR11, the two Vietnam legs in TAR10, not to mention the two Vietnam legs this season, etc. etc. etc.

the schnauzers, I decided to take a look at your question with data I had handy on AR10, AR11, AR12 AR13, AR14 and AR15. All of them have consecutive legs that meet your criteria. bag provided everal of these examples before I got home and could address this, but here is the comprehensive list just for those 5 races. I will check on AR1 to AR9.

AR10, ep. 3 and 4 in Vietnam
AR11 ep. 2 and 3 in Chile
AR12 ep. 3 and 4 in Burkina Faso
AR13 ep. 1 and 1 in Brazil
AR14 ep. 4 and 5 in Siberia (Russia)
AR15 ep. 2 and 3 in Vietnam

the schnauzers:
I now have the comprehensive story of all such situations and there is at least one in every Amazing Race from AR1 to AR15:

AR1 - ep. 2 and 3 France; ep. 4 and 5 Tunisia (note - modified by feedback from Raymond and the schnauzers); ep. 8 and 9 Thailand
AR2 - ep. 1 and 2 Brazil
AR3 - ep. 1 and 2 Mexico
AR4 - ep. 1 and 3 Italy; ep. 6 and 7 India
AR5 - ep. 2 and 3 Argentina
AR6 - ep. 10 and 11 China
AR7 - ep. 3 and 4 Argentina; ep. 6 and 7 Botswana
AR8 - ep. 7 and 8 Arizona (note that most episodes are U.S. but that is too easy so I went for back-to-back in one state)
Ar9 - ep. 1 and 2 Brazil; ep. 4 and 5 Sicily

plus copying from above:

AR10, ep. 3 and 4 in Vietnam
AR11 ep. 2 and 3 in Chile
AR12 ep. 3 and 4 in Burkina Faso
AR13 ep. 1 and 1 in Brazil
AR14 ep. 4 and 5 in Siberia (Russia)
AR15 ep. 2 and 3 in Vietnam

apskip, I appreciate your efforts, but I know TAR 1 didn't go to Russia, it went to Italy.

What I was getting at was that until the changes in/after TAR 12 that reduced the number of NELs, those usually occured in the first leg of two consecutive legs in a country. I keep notes too, but I hadn't correlated my notes of team leg placements by country.

What I was trying to do was speculate on a possible twist in Dubai that would catch the Racers and the viewer by surprise and still have us down to six teams after Dubai consistent with the spoiler information. I don't have anything to point to other than instinct, but I think it's worth throwing that idea out there.

Well Thailand an elim leg --> NEL in Season 2, while Switzerland TAR 3 had BOTH legs as NELsl And as for the twist: unless it's a double elimination at one mat, please no. :funny:

apskip, I think you meant Tunisia, not Russia for Season 1. :funny: Plus, you forgot the two Morocco legs in TAR 3 & wasn't the first China leg in TAR 6 an NEL that saved Adam/Rebecca?

Question: If teams are racing on a track, doing a desert task, visiting the Burj Dubai and doing winter tasks in Dubai 1, what ELSE can they be possibly doing for Dubai 2? More desert tasks? An eating challenge? Tasks outside of Dubai (probably in Sharjah)? :duno:

a good twist might be to have a TBC leg

but at the midpoint a team still gets eliminated

something like: "you're the first team to arrive, however, this leg is not over, and you're still racing..... you're the last team to arrive and unfortunately that means this leg is over for you, and so is this race."

That'd be a cool twist to see, something that everyone thinks is safe, but then still turns out to be an elimination point

Note the number of common letters (4) between Russia and Tunisia. I did mean Tunisia but sometimes it is difficult near midnight to decipher what I had written down earlier. Thanks for the catch, the schnauzers and Raymond. I will alter my table.

Raymond, I understand your comment on the Morocco legs in AR3. However, I do not look at the leg starting Cabo de Roca Portugal and continuing with Dieselgate through Spain and across on the ferry to Algeciras and then continuing from Tangier to Fez as a Moroccan leg even though the pit stop was in Morocco.

Raymond, you are correct that leg 10 of AR6 in China was non-elimination, which means there was no applicable back-to-back elimination episodes in the same country in AR6. Oh, well, I guess we can all survive that news.

I still think that hood could be a short form for neighborhood, it would be easier to spoil if we know for certain who said it... that would be very boring.

I don't really care about spoiling about what happens at this point, unless:
a) some team/s fall WAY behind
b) it was spoiled to be one of Mika/Canaan/Lance/Keri who said the quote, which could determine who goes earlier
c) it's actually an NEL, compared to what has been spoiled (VERY unlikely, but who knows really?)

Good catch, Slowhatch! Until I saw your link I thought, "Jumeirah?! Again?! This is getting close to beating the Macau Tower! (TAR 11, TARI 1, TARA 3)", but then I realized that going up the slide, the stairs were narrower, the top platform was smaller (the one Mika is walking around on panicking), there were dolphins (cool really) and the bar thing Cheyne let go of was longer. (Yeah, I am aware I may exaggerate the little details. :funny:)

Canaan is officially in my bad books.

You could pretty much take it for a rule in the race that one should not, ever, unless perhaps the ledge is on fire, throw your girlfriend down a waterslide.

I hope the fight isn't as bad as the promo makes it out to be. I'd hate to see Canaan turn into Lance on her.

Lance was laffos :laff:, so I won't mind. :funny:

I don't know whether Canaan is going Jonathan, Mika is going Flo or both...

NOTHING can top Jonathan & Flo was <3<3<3, so... :funny:

Ya from Season 10, but it's from a Roadblock, so putting it out there though VERY VERY unlikely since they should be hyping it like mad: could this be one of the Roadblocks repeated? This one was after the Chos sacrificed their place in line for David/Mary and the one that incited the COLORFUL Lyn & Karlyn/Dustin & Kandice rivalry, so I think it can count as a somewhat memorable Roadblock.

The person who elected to have Mika do a water slide ROADBLOCK in episode 6 in spite of her known aversion to swimming made a poor decision. After episode 5 they were at 4RB Canaan and 1 RB Mika. The need to bring it toward equality is obvious. Mika and Canaan will probably have to meet a split of something like Canaan 7 Mika 4 if they go all the way. That means Canaan could have done the water slide and they could have gotten where they need to go.

puddin,
I realize that 120 (claimed by a racer in last night's telecast) and 130 degrees claiemd by CBS/WRP publicity for the next episode can occur in localized spots. However, I find both claims ludicrous. The temperature range in Dubai for July 27 was 86 low to 100 degrees high. The temperature range for Dubai for July 28 was 88 low to 105 high. How did they get to 120 or 130 degrees on these. The simple fact is that they didn't.

And (SUPER SPEC) I think Gary is on the boat; to the right of the three men sitting you can see two shadows, one of which looks like it's wearing a huge load and baseball cap (or else it's a cameraman and Gary is on the left in the light shirt).

Not an innertube, but a Challenger 2 (http://www.intexcorp.com/boats_lake_challenger.html) inflatable boat. Why he's paddling--when you can see an oar sticking out of the side--is a mystery.
They would need sheltered waters (I'm guessing) for the racers to row out to the yacht. One of the inside arms of the Palm would do it, but I can't find any matching treeline/background.

Raymond, the odds are maybe 40% that you are right with this hypothesis. However, the more likely propsect is that CBS/WRP have used the old misdirection play to lead you to the incorrect conclusion that Mika is giving up and will not go down that slide. Think of the number of instances in Amazing Races where just before the commercial all is lost and then there is a miraculous recovery. I predict that will happen one more time. Mika/Canaan may still be eliminated, however, due to the time lost before she does go down the slide.

There's so much new construction going on (and the GE imagery is more than a year old), it's hard to say...For example, here's a neighborhood mosque (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/18074339) with maybe 4 minarets. Nearby there's a tall flagpole that may be the thing on the right of the cap. I can't line up the perspective though, and who knows maybe more has been built in the same area (and everywhere else) in the past year.

Deira/Dubai creek side park  (http://www.flickr.com/photos/shukufe/99773173/sizes/l/), the creek park is across from the golf course.

 Looks like Cheyne & Meghan may have a different challenge, involving waterpipes.  :ascared They give each other the high five after doing something (unpacking?).  :duno:

edited to add:
Along the slightly larger lanes of the gold souk, each shop window is crammed with gold necklaces, rings, bangles, earrings and brooches. In the evening the area is a hive of activity. Gold prices are among the lowest in the world.

In other small streets, the visitor can find shops selling nargilehs (hookah or hubble-bubble pipes) and coffee pots, and nearby tea stalls where both of these items are in daily use.

Random thought: Is there a chance Mika/Canaan quit the Atlantis task, and that's why they are eliminated? Due to a penalty?
Raymond, the odds are maybe 40% that you are right with this hypothesis. However, the more likely propsect is that CBS/WRP have used the old misdirection play to lead you to the incorrect conclusion that Mika is giving up and will not go down that slide. Think of the number of instances in Amazing Races where just before the commercial all is lost and then there is a miraculous recovery. I predict that will happen one more time. Mika/Canaan may still be eliminated, however, due to the time lost before she does go down the slide.
Thanks for your explanation, Mr. Amazing Race.

Creekside park has possibilites--the pole might be a pylon for the gondola ride (http://picasaweb.google.com/Kaludjerovic.Ilija/Dubai3#5276225034921704482)--but like everybody else I can't find a good mosque (or that office building in the background).

eragon,

Now there is a good prediction. I agree with you. I rate the probability in the 50% range that the second Dubai episode is either NEL or TBC. There are two NELs or TBCs left in this race. I expect one to be found in one of the 2 legs in Czech Republic. The other has to be somewhere. If you work backward from the Czech assumption, you need 3 teams exiting Prague, 4  (if Czech NEL) or 5 (if Czech TBC) exiting Talinn, 5 or 6 exiting Stockholm 6 or 7 and exiting Dubai 6 or 7. It could go either way.

Then came the blond girl with a guy and after that came the basketballers.
The girl I saw was not as short and she looked as if she could be dutch. She was also attractive.
I've heard that there was a gay couple (two guys)
I have sources that tell me as well that there were six teams. So that must be true.
I've heard sources say that they heard (near the place where it happened) that the contestants came from the airport straight from Dubai

And of course thanks to the video that Boingo found (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,18840.msg435300.html#msg435300), we know Tiffany&Maria, Matt&Gary, and Brian&Ericka are there as well.

Think the building has to be southwest of, not northeast of, the stadium...

A - Stadium, B - Indoor Sports Complex, C - Domed Building

Is X the building we want?

Actually, I rate the probability of Mika and Canaan's elimination at 80%. The first leg NEL has pushed back the normal elimination pattern and probably costed the most out of the legs so far (what a waste). Additionally, sending them to Sequesterville is easier from Dubai than the Netherlands.

I see the next NEL somewhere in Groningen or Stockholm (though I want to say Sweden eliminates the poker girls to capitalize on the Switchback).

As Slowhatch pointed out - this is a raft - not an innertube.
So why isn't the trotter rowing his boat and why don't we see his legs hanging off the edge?

Has he broken through the bottom of the raft  :groan: - turning it into an innertube!

BTW - Challenger 2 specs say dimensions 86" x 45" x 13" and max. weight 253 lbs.

The few upscale marinas I have been in didn't take yoiu to the yachts in a yellow inflatable raft. They had upscale dinghies, lol. Plus Ericka looks 100% dry on the yacht...plus why wouldn't both team members be there??

I am thinking perhaps this is a separate roadblock from the yacht task and may have nothing to do with the yacht at all...

Am I missing something? ???

:groan:  Like puddin was saying, peach, the yacht is in Dubai Creek between the Marina and the Dubai Creek Park.  The trotter is in his boat, which shows the Dubai Creek Park in the background.  ergo, 1+1= trotter is very near the yacht..  We are drawing our own conclusions from this info.  The choice of inflatable boat is purely BVM/WPR/TAR decision.  Hope this clears things up.   ;D

glad to help, peach.  If you look closely at the "enhanced" photo puddin photoshopped of the 3 amigos in the yacht, you can see the reflection of the cameraman and (possibly the soundman or some other production crew member).  I suspect this is a standup shot not involving the racers but for the benefit of the previews.  I suspect they will either stand or sit when the actual racer(s) arrive.  I don't think this has any significance at all to the story.

As far as the briefcase goes, we know the racers are seen carrying it at the marina.  One can speculate that they take the briefcase to the yacht in exchange for the little red box.  Or maybe not. (we don't actually see the briefcase in the inflatable boat with the trotter).     It's all speculation for now.

I think the briefcase holds the "riches" or waterpipes, and that the teams need to deliver it to the barons on the yacht for their next clue.

Her intro video talked about how she was learning to swim for the show, wasn't very confident yet, and was bringing pink floaties because they made her feel safer/more confident.  :(

That's just so cute! But bringing a partner onto the race who's both afriad of water and heights?? :(

. . . But i love the effort that Mika put in pre-race for the race!

I may have to hedge a bit on the gold market. The spice souk, (according to wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubai_Spice_Souk) it's adjacent to the gold souk--and sells shishas) is just as much a match: awnings, columns and capitals, even the floor tiling. In fact, this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/20323481@N00/2303531631/sizes/l/) may be the Trotter courtyard with the potted tree.

I'm pretty sure Mika and Canaan are smart racers and Mika won't opt to do a "water" Roadblock if she's afriad of the waters.

And as puddin said, it's described as a task, we can't assume it's a Roadblock.

I think the water slide is a task teams have to perform in order to check in at the mat. It seems to be very much like the "swim the length of the pool" task just before reaching the mat in the Sri Lanka leg of TAR 6, even more than the "lead the tourists" task in the first ;eg this season.

It's the worst possible thing for Mika:
a.) it's not a roadblock, so she can't opt out and have Canaan do it
b.) it's not a detour, so they can't just choose a different task
c.) it's a perfect little mix of a couple of her greatest fears

all those letters together spell D-O-N-E in my book...

Do we think that we will Canaan and Mika  get philiminated at the top of the water slide?

Or

Mika overcomes her fears and finishes strong?

Or even better...

Mika tells Canaan to go find Able and she rides off into the sunset on the boat with those gold guys.

IMO, teams may still say "we" have to deliver it, even if only one person was doing the task (roadblock).
Wouldn't a bigger indicator be that the 2 team members are still together?  Usually if it was a Roadblock, one team member will either wait at a spot or be transported to a rendevous spot, while the other teammate does the task.  Have we had roadblocks where they travel together DURING the task?

;D Just a few observations about Team Zebra and their gold.  I see a scale and what looks like a calculator, along with lots of bullion in the form of blank coins and bars.  NONE of the gold has any markings of any kind.  Typically bullion carries the weight and fineness on it.

Are the teams required to guess the weight of a specific amount of gold?  And were these gold pieces made especially for TAR?   :ascared  Way cool if they were.   :snicker:

Just looking through the store window, it appears to be a modern mall of some kind, rather than the chaotic souk.  Perhaps they are in the nearby Gold Centre Building, instead of the actual older gold souk.  :duno:

At Dubai’s Gold Souk, gold is sold according to weight – except for very light pieces of jewellery. One gram of 22-carat gold costs around 10 dollars, duty-free. Bargaining is often possible, especially when intending to buy several pieces at once. With larger purchases, customers receive small gold gifts as complimentary give-aways.

Something like we'll take 2 grammes?

On the question of taxis:

Teams took white U-drive vehicles from Ski Dubai to the Souk. I saw the car the Globetrotters were driving as wel as the one Sam/Dan were driving near the end of last Sunday's telecast. Why would they abandon them and take a taxi? I think they still have those cars.

So the leg starts with the briefcase, then to the marina, then the raft, then the boat, then the bongs, then the slide, then pit stop  :duno:

Also, it's a non-standard, ie buggered, start time again judging from the early morning look of Gary w/briefcase.

So the leg starts with the briefcase, then to the marina, then the raft, then the boat, then the bongs, then the slide, then pit stop  :duno:

Also, it's a non-standard, ie buggered, start time again judging from the early morning look of Gary w/briefcase.

Oh dear...what is confusng me now??

I was thinking briefcase to the Detour/souks>.to the yacht>.to the RB>> to the slide>.to the Pitstop?

But we don't really know for sure do we?

Where's Boingo to straighten me out?? :funny:

Are there any pictures of Phil's watch for any of the other teams?  I am curious how much, if any, time they gained on Meghan & Cheyne's lead.
Mika/Canaan started 3 hours and 37 minutes after them.  And they finished either 2 hours and 55 minutes to 3 hours and 20 minutes after them.  They sat at the top of the slide for 45 minutes.  If not for that, they would have finished 2h 10m & 2h 35m (if my math is correct)...so they made up a good hour on the FF team.
I just wonder if any of the others did.
Thanks

This may have been mentioned somewhere in a thread, but I don't remember it. This is what the racers walked up and slid down (except for Mika):

The Leap of Faith
27.5m tall and 61m long, from the top of the Ziggurat the Leap of Faith catapults riders into a transparent tunnel and through a shark-filled lagoon, where guitar sharks, bow mouth sharks, white tip, black tip and grey reef sharks all reside.

In addition, Atlantis Dubai has a dophin park at Dolphin Beach where the pit stop is, and an Underwater World for marine animals, expecially sharks and sting rays:

Dolphin Bay Marine & Waterpark
-Shallow Water Interaction
-Deep Water Interaction
-Dolphin Bay Education Centre

THE UNDERWATER WORLD -
Imagine exploring the mysterious ruins of Atlantis, lost for thousands of years deep beneath the sea. Now picture looking up to see 65,000 marine animals swimming in placid waters. Visitors can live out their own Atlantean adventure in The Lost Chambers, maze of underwater halls and tunnels.

Meghan and Cheyne - Meghan's starting to lose her cool, but it was still an awesome leg ran by them. They got stuck at the Detour, but still finished strong. This team's really unbeatable and unstoppable!

Maria and Tiffany - Wow, who'd have expected such a strong finish from these girls! Honestly, I take back what I said previously, about them trying so hard and never being able to do well. They've just proved me wrong. Poker girls rock at Math! :D

Sam and Dan - It was smart of them to bring a calculator, very smart. I just love how they're working so well with Maria and Tiffany. This is one really cute and sweet alliance, they're really helping one another out and all. =)

Brian and Ericka - I totally LOL-ed when they were up at the slide, Brian saying that Ericka probably wouldn't have gone down the slide had he gone first. Loved their expressions when they ended up in the water, lol. I still really love this team, but I wish that Ericka will pull a little more weight instead of just talking.

Gary and Matt - Mel and Mike minus the humour! They're just doing so good and still working well together. It's just so awww seeing a good relationship between a father and his son.

Flight Time and Big Easy - My impression of them has dropped quite a lot by them being so discouraging to Mika. Well I mean, yes, it's a race, they need not be the ones encouraging her and all but all those harsh words weren't necessary. Meh.

Mika and Canaan - Canaan has always been the one pushing the team, and ultimately, it was Mika that cost them the race. I do feel that Mika should have just tried to overcome her fear and gone down the slide but at the same time, I thought that Canaan should have been more encouraging. The way he did it was rather threatening, saying stuff like, "You're gonna regret if you don't go down." Come on, that wouldn't work, seeing that the girl was on the verge of going crazy. And he actually attempted to throw her down the slide, HE'd be the one regretting had he done that. I understand Canaan's frustration, but I kinda feel that had he been nicer and all, Mika MIGHT have gone down the slide. Either way, it sucked that they had to go out this way. I wish that they'd have stayed over the Globetrotters, it's so boring having a physically fit all-male team dominating. But well... Mika has just got to learn to be stronger. I still love them though, Canaan was really sweet at the end.

Current ranking of teams:
1. Brian and Ericka
2. Maria and Tiffany
3. Meghan and Cheyne
4. Sam and Dan
5. Gary and Matt
6. Flight Time and Big Easy

I'm revising my scoring system:
Japan gets a subpar from me.
Vietnam leg 1 gets a good and Vietnam leg 2 gets an average.
Phnom Penh gets an average.
Dubai leg 1 gets a good.

This leg on the other hand gets an outstanding. People will remember this episode due to Mika's breakdown  :groan:. (I still think the Dubai legs should've been merged into one.) I liked how this leg focused more on the drama and revealed quite a bit about the teams. (There should be stronger woman participants on TAR 16.) Quite a few other stumbles in this episode.

Poor Globetrotters, they got stuck on the roadblock and lost a lot of time. Yet, they're probably my top team right now for their calm composure and AWESOME one-liners. Don't blame them for being mean to Canaan; it's a race people!

Plus, finally a decent detour!  :hearts: I'm still ashamed of Dan and Sam for screwing up WITH a calculator.
Great to see Maria and Tiffany be competent. They're not going to win this thing though :P Team Miss America gets a pass due to the long division (and the changing numbers). Surprised so many teams did the hookahs in that heat. The detour judges rocked by being much harsher than the ones we've seen.

Winning poker at any level involves complex mathematical calculations which Maria and Tiffany must do in their heads. They must have great mathematical aptitude. Having a calculator to do $5000 / Gold price per ounce would have been a piece of cake for them.

Just wondering, did the calculation of weight require the conversion of grams into ounces? There was a line in smaller text on the big screen showing that conversion...

'Cause dividing $500 000 by $x/oz is really... erm... pretty easy with a calculator.

Neobie:

I went back to the telecast of episode 6, Dubai II. It clearly shows that the calculation is from dollars into troy ounces and fractions of troy ounces. The bottom line is that no further arithmetic into grams or anything else is needed, just prompt manipulation of the correct amount of gold pieces onto the scale.

To see that this set of calculations makes sense, one of the numbers used in the telecast was 934.2 $/ounce. To carry the calculation one step further, using the 934.2 $/tr.oz. that would have given 535.2173 troy ounces. That is how much they needed to place on the scale quickly before the price changed each minute.

The 31.1034768 is the correct grams per troy ounce, but it is a red herring as far as the DETOUR was concerned.

In this particular instance, it would have been easy without a calculator. As others have pointed out, just use Lazy Man's arithmetic:
Then just keep drilling down the remainder. The calculator would be useful for small price changes. As Boingo mentioned, the gold wasn't marked or stamped (probably "amazing" gold, just like the phony gold bricks from The Mole 5), so figuring the weight units would be--trial and error?

Slowhatch,

The problem with your method is precision. You won't get it to multiple decimal places to the right(the example showed 3 places). Using standard paper and pencil arithmetic, I (pretty decent at arithmetic as well as mathematics in general) attempted to do this in less than 55 seconds (leaving 5 seconds to place the pieces on the scale). It took me 100 seconds and my result was 525.33 due to rounding error. The correct answer by calculator is 525.217. Your approximation method has no chance.

I would like you to pick another quite different 4-digit exchange rate, run a timed calculation with your approximation method and then compare it to the calculator result. I bet you cannot do it correctly in 55 seconds or less.

The way teams should have approached this problem once they discovered the "changes every minute" feature was to ask the store personnel to borrow a calculator. I think this is what Nate/Herb did but they weren't able to successfully come up with a right answer due to slow speed. It's not high math involved here but I hypothesize that none of these individuals except Maria and Tiffany has done any serious arithmetic in years.

The difficulty of this task all depends on what accuracy the teams are required to use.  At one point we hear Brian say that they have calculate it to the exact ounce.  Okay, if that is the degree of accuracy then this is a piece of cake.

Watch and Learn !

Say the current price is $934.14 per ounce.  Add 934.14 to 934.14 to get 1868.28.  Add 934.14 to that to get 2802.42.  And so on until you have 1 through ten covered like this:

1     934.14
2    1868.28
3    2802.42
4    3736.56
5    4670.70
6    5604.84
7    6538.98
8    7473.12
9    8407.26
10  9341.14

Without worrying about the price changing, just go ahead and determine that if it was still $934.14 then you would need
500 ounces plus 500000 - 467070 = 32390 worth (remainder), so add in
30 ounces plus 32390 - 28024.20 = 4905.80 worth (remainder), so add in
5 ounces plus 4905.80 - 4670.70 = 235.10 worth (remainder is less than one ounce) so skip it

So load up the scale with 535 ounces and wait for the next price change.

Say the next price change that pops up shows $942.75 per ounce.  You have 60 seconds to do the following:
Get the difference between the two prices:  8.61
Multiply that by the number of ounces you have on the scale:  535 * 8.61 = 4606.35
That is how many dollars past $500000 your scale load is.
So, using the collection of already-multiplied amounts you can quickly estimate the number of ounces you need to remove from the scale:
5 ounces because 4606.35 is closer to 4670.70 than it is to 3736.56

Pull off the five ounces from the scale and call the judge.

There is an uncertainty in this method that may result in the wrong correction.  That is because the 'old' price is being used to determine the amount to remove. But most of the time it works out correctly.   If you think you can generate the table of multiplied numbers for the new current price then just do that from the start!

Remember the rolling cheese, Chateau? B:) This method makes use of the fact that one partner is half of two, that 500oz is half of 1000oz, and $500000 half of $1000000. (That's even what they said in the clue!) I've cut out the boring math, but PM me if you're a nerd!

Start with 500oz on the scales. Say the new rate is $942.75/oz.

PARTNER ONE
1. Multiply the rate by 1000. That's double the value you already have.
942.75 x 1000 = 942750
2. Deduct that from 1000000. That's double the remainder value you need.
1000000 - 942750 = 57250
3. Divide that by 2, then round it off to the hundreds place.
57250 / 2 = 28625, rounded to 28600

PARTNER TWO
4. Round off the rate to the tens place.
942.75, rounded to 940
5. Write out multiples of that. This step is not essential, but it speeds up long division. (Same method as Chateau.)
94 x 2 = 188
94 x 3 = 282
94 x 4 = 376
94 x 5 = 470
94 x 6 = 564
94 x 7 = 658
94 x 8 = 752
94 x 9 = 846

TOGETHER
6. Divide Step 3 by Step 4 by long multiplication, and round it to the nearest ounce.
28600 / 940 = 2860 / 94 = 30.4
30.4, rounded off to 30

7. Add 30oz to the scales. Call for the judge.

Did it in 45s without a partner.

Let me see if I can end this debate on the math and the best way to calculate it, despite the fact that so many are getting such enjoyment out of it. The actual rate quoted by Maria and Tiffany to Sam and Dan and used by all 4 was 534.9. That was for a gold price of $934.75/oz. That shows that my belief that the 3 deicmal places on the calculator were needed is incorrect and that only one decimal place was needed. All those small bars must be one-tenths of a troy ounce.

It was actually 534.9**. Listen carefully and you'll hear the audio snipped--for both teams--right after the 9. Odd. Another bit of odd editing is the Trotters, who seem to be solving the problem in reverse ("up to 418,000...add some more"); no final inspection, just the clue reward (mistranslated btw; mabrouk  مبروك means "congratulations," not "correct").

Nice work Neobie.  I could never do that 45 seconds  :ascared  You are amazing.  I see the angle you are taking in determination of a correction factor safely accurate to two figures.  I was leveraging off the proximity of a known price to make correction factor of one figure (that's all I can handle in 45 seconds!).  But that leverage comes at an upfront computation cost and time I have to do prior to the latest price.

On the sizes of the pieces, we used to chop up 1/20 ounce gold coins for evaporations (they had five 9's purity and were a lot cheaper than buying ultra-pure gold from chemical supply houses).

But what I remember was that the coins were about the size of a dime.  That was the smallest denomination we could find.  I saw little coins about that size scattered about in the show.  They may have been expected to be accurate to 1/20 ounce.  Brian could have been simplifying it when he said "accurate to one ounce" thinking that was the smallest coin   :duno:
