Made slightly more surreal by a) the Bellagio-style water show in the lake next to it, and b) the Amazing Race participants looking for clues as we left the restaurant where we ate dinner. For real.

having said that, here's what we saw: it was roughly 10:30 p.m. dubai time on sunday, july 26. we were coming out of urbano, a restaurant in souk al bahar. they were not in the restaurant; they were looking for a checkpoint outside. (it turned out to be near the dubai mall taxi stand, by a giant statue of a black horse.) when we got up close to the checkpoint, we could see that it was a sign-in sheet, and there was a producer waiting nearby to hand the contestants instructions. the teams we saw were each one man, one woman, in their 20s or early 30s, dressed in t-shirts and giant backpacks. we didn't get any pictures of the contestants... sorry.

This in a PM from the guy on the flight to Dubai...I'm trying to get flight details as well: Their seemed to be team consisting of two females (one looked asian, the other american i am guessing!) and too tall 'black dudes.' i dont remember seeing anyone else but i will ask my friend i travelled with and may get back to you! This is before he said, "And a hot blonde...". All of those sound exactly like 3 of our teams.

If you do not know already the sliding task is at the indoor ski resort is in Mall of the Emirates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mall_of_the_Emirates). That is where ski Dubai is if people were unsure. But why are they sliding on their butts? :funny:

I agree with most of what you said. I think that Mika and Cannan are just complete lost and it has nothing to do with the task(I haven't seen the eppy yet). But I do agree with you speculation of the RB and FF.
Could both detours be in Ski Dubai and one be the snowman and the other one be sliding down a mountain using only their bodies? So detour is to Slide or Build?? :duno:

I want to talk about flights to go Phnom Penh to Dubai. All the other commentators on this have assumed that the direct route PHN BKK and BKK DXB is best, but that is not the case. Notwithstanding the information that teams were spotted on TG517 nonstop from BKK DXB 1818 (actual) 2120 (actual), the smart teams would have done the following:
BKK DEL AI9854 1335(actual) 1635 (actual) DEL DXB EK6680 1825(actual) 2130(actual), because the schedule has EK6680 arriving 10 minutes earlier than TG517 even though on this day it was 10 minutes later
Now, for the flight from PNH to BKK, is is not smart to wait around in Cambodia when you can reach Bangkok earlier than others have shown. I see no reason other than later release from the pit stop (which I consider unlikely) to not get on:
PG932 0937 (actual 7/26) 1046 (actual 7/26) or on TG581 1000 1105, which Thai Airways shows flying on Sundays but evidence of that on 7/26 is unclear.
If teams are relased too late for those flights, then the afternoon flight PG934 would be OK to conenct to TG517 in Bangkok.

If any teams arrive early enough to Bangkok's BKK then I would direct them to Dubai by way of Kuwait:
Thai Airways TG 519 leaving Bangkok at 1:00 pm and arriving in Kuwait at 4:35 pm. Then they take Emirates EK 858 leaving at 6:05 pm and arriving in Dubai at 8:40 pm.
Those lucky teams would then be arriving 50 minutes ahead of the teams we know who took the slower flight. :jam:

If any teams arrive early enough to Bangkok's BKK then I would direct them to Dubai by way of Kuwait:
Thai Airways TG 519 leaving Bangkok at 1:00 pm and arriving in Kuwait at 4:35 pm. Then they take Emirates EK 858 leaving at 6:05 pm and arriving in Dubai at 8:40 pm.
Those lucky teams would then be arriving 50 minutes ahead of the teams we know who took the slower flight. :jam:
Chateau, Good work to turn up a flight (TG519) that is logical but my flight reservation system does not acknowlege the existence of, which is a bit weird. Another reputable flight information system does have TG519 so I have to conclude that it did exist.
I took a second look at the connecting points of Delhi, Mumbai, Kuwait and Muscat. The problem that they all have is that the vast majority of flights to Dubai are night, early morning or early evening. There is practically nothing in the middle of the day. With the only possible flights to Bangkok arriving slightly before or after 11am, routings from those places just have to wait until early evening.

I know what that "thing between their legs is" but have had trouble finding a picture of one. It is a relatively small sheet of flexable plastic that can be bent upward in the front and probablby behind as well. A picture of an item not exactly it but is as close as I can get is:

I know what that "thing between their legs is" but have had trouble finding a picture of one. It is a relatively small sheet of flexable plastic that can be bent upward in the front and probablby behind as well. A picture of an item not exactly it but is as close as I can get is:
Up north we call them recovery shovels - handy for digging your car out of snow drifts in an emergency - or maybe sand dunes. Guessing its "Ride your shovel down the hill - fill up a container with snow using the shovel - take container outside and build a snowman".
I have rode similar shovels down ski hills - although they were bigger and less painful looking.

and wp noted it was in front of Burj Dubai. And there is a signup sheet.
The sign up sheet is likely for one of the driving tasks. I would guess it is for the desert (vs. race car) driving as this seems to be for both team members.

Yep, I agree; since both are suited up for the Autodrome, that must be the second half. If the lady saw the teams by the horse at 10:30 p.m., then they get lift tickets, go up the Burj the next morning, and pull a card telling them to grab cars out of the parking lot and drive to the dunes? Just guessing.

I think this group is milling about waiting for the tower to open so that they can do that task. My assumption is that teams signed into the tower task the night before (10:30 pm from other info in this thread); the sign up sheet is next to the horse. Teams are milling because they have a set time to start at the tower.
Edit: After posting the paragraph above and can now actually see the tall tower in the background. So I may be completely off. :groan:

The site Puddin mentioned, skyscrapercity, has some interesting photos. This is a photo of construction of what I think is the plinth for the horse (for some reason I can't link to the photo; here's the source page (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=111556&page=66)). I don't think they care anymore, take the first episode for example the license plates then in Tokyo at the crossings and Vietnam at the mud task.

I want to talk about flights to go Phnom Penh to Dubai. All the other commentators on this have assumed that the direct route PHN BKK and BKK DXB is best, but that is not the case. Notwithstanding the information that teams were spotted on TG517 nonstop from BKK DXB 1818 (actual) 2120 (actual), the smart teams would have done the following:
BKK DEL AI9854 1335(actual) 1635 (actual) DEL DXB EK6680 1825(actual) 2130(actual), because the schedule has EK6680 arriving 10 minutes earlier than TG517 even though on this day it was 10 minutes later
Now, for the flight from PNH to BKK, is is not smart to wait around in Cambodia when you can reach Bangkok earlier than others have shown. I see no reason other than later release from the pit stop (which I consider unlikely) to not get on:
PG932 0937 (actual 7/26) 1046 (actual 7/26) or on TG581 1000 1105, which Thai Airways shows flying on Sundays but evidence of that on 7/26 is unclear.
If teams are released too late for those flights, then the afternoon flight PG934 would be OK to conenct to TG517 in Bangkok.

I think there is a relatively simple possible explanation that only uses a practice from a prior episode. In Japan teams arrived aroudn 430pm (admittedly in Narita maybe 2 hours from Tokyo Tower) but they did not start their tasks on July 19. They were delayed until July 20 by what I call a pseudo-pit-stop break. I think the same thing happens in Dubai on arrival on July 27, although it appears to me that teams do go that evening to Burj Dubai to sign up for their task there on the morning of July 28. That is a way to reward teams for high performance despite Bunching.

In the Roadblock for this leg, one team member had to complete a single vault over a watery, muddy ditch and successfully touch both feet to the marshy grass on the opposite side in a regional sport known as ditch vaulting in order to receive their next clue.

LeMans road race by Amazing Racers was totally without controversy, so it could never be rated as "infamous". The pole vaulting over the fjierlippen (muddy ditch) was not a highly infamous ROADBLOCK. Maybe 3 racers got wet and Donald showed off his physique but those are not overwhelmingly infamous. If you want to nominate an alternative to that indicated below, then please come up with something truly infamous.
My vote stays with the truly infamous hay bales unroll ROADBLOCK in Sweden near Stockholm. AR15 could return to the same field used in AR6 for maximum impact. Plus maybe have either Lena or Kristy as greeter at the pit stop.

Lucybell, the Switchback not only has to be a roadblock, it has to take place at the original location of that roadblock. Bertram then limited this further by describing the task as one that was infamous. Once this Race moved past Ho Chi Mihn City, it seemed to some of us that it pretty much left the haybale roadblock outside Stockholm as the most likely task.

Well, we know that they buggered the departure times for this leg of the race :groan:
Here they are in noontime sunshine when we know they finished the previous leg around 4:30 pm.
(:;) It's probably just to preclude the teams from ever catching the flight through Kuwait:
Thai Airways TG 519 leaving Bangkok at 1:00 pm and arriving in Kuwait at 4:35 pm. Then they take Emirates EK 858 leaving at 6:05 pm and arriving in Dubai at 8:40 pm.
To get that flight they needed to be at Phnom Penh's airport in time to catch this flight to BKK (from Apskip): PG932 0937 (actual 7/26) 1046 (actual 7/26)
It gets pretty hot in the evenings too... I know because I lived in Cambodia and have visited all the race locations except for the temple.

I think there is a relatively simple possible explanation that only uses a practice from a prior episode. In Japan teams arrived aroudn 430pm (admittedly in Narita maybe 2 hours from Tokyo Tower) but they did not start their tasks on July 19. They were delayed until July 20 by what I call a pseudo-pit-stop break. I think the same thing happens in Dubai on arrival on July 27, although it appears to me that teams do go that evening to Burj Dubai to sign up for their task there on the morning of July 28. That is a way to reward teams for high performance despite Bunching.
I think the simple possible explanation that uses a practice from prior episodes is called "time buggering" ! That's when Phil does not say
"Sam & Dan who arrived at 4:25 pm will depart at 4:25 am"
but instead says something like:
"Sam & Dan who are the first team to complete the previous leg of the race will depart at 11:25 am"
It shows that they did not have a standard 12-hour Pit Stop.

They keep showing the lump of coal nose on that snow bear..and that is just what it looked like Ericka thought she had. Nice random carrot in a snowpile task.
But what I am wondering..... in my mind the snow came first. But after seeing this, and hearing Tiffany say "from one extreme to another", I am now wondering if the desert comes first? Which might also make sense to get that done early before the middle of the day. :duno:
might also explain the comment about their lead from Matt and Gary.

1. When watching the promo, I thought the same thing. The way Herb said it, made me think they passed on it because they thought they would have to jump off. Soooo, my thought was, the Burj might be a FF? If they have to go to the tippy top to retrieve their pitstop clue, a person who is afraid of heights might panic before they even leave the ground...
2. It did sound like there is definitely an elimination... But playing devil's advocate, CBS is pretty sneaky (or so they think, LOL) I suppose Zev and Justin could have just as easily said no one as they could Lance and Keri or Mika and Canaan.

My thoughts and questions on the upcoming eppie... Seems really botchy.
When they are digging in the snow, they didn't have the little shovel (that's in Brian's hand when Erika is coming down the hill). So what is the little shovel for? Are they digging for snowman features (nose, eyes, etc...) or were they digging for the shovels, sleds or a clue? They had to be digging first, before sledding down the hill, otherwise, I think they would have used the shovels to help them find what ever it is they are looking for.
What if... Gary and Matt were first at the snow pile, therefore had a little bit of a lead. If another team arrived, "so much for our lead." I think they may have maintained their lead because the pictures on the snow hill were of Tiff/Mare, Sam/Dan, Brian/Erika. Also, the hill that Gary and Matt were digging on was the little one to the left of where the other teams were digging and they are no longer there in the picture.
In one of the pictures, it shows Lance and Keri with a cooler in the backseat. Could this challenge be: Dig through the snow to find a shovel, sled down the hill and with their shovels, fill a cooler with snow and deliver it somewhere for their next clue. It's just that if the snowman was going to be built in this episode, that would be an awful lot of stuff to cram into one episode. (digging, sledding, building a BIG snowman, searching the desert for water, climbing to the top of the Burj, racing in the desert or on the track, etc...)
Race on the track OR race through the desert... Cheyne in the race car, Meghan cheering him on. Sam and Dan were in the picture when it said 'race through the desert.' This would mean that eventually, Meghan would have to drive the race car too (if both members of the team have to contribute) unless, she had to perform a task before Cheyne could race (like attaching the wheel or tires). Sam and Dan were clearly NOT driving in the desert, they had a driver who, I'll bet has experience. This would be a somewhat unfair advantage? Also, who in their right minds would turn down a chance to drive a fancy race car around a race track? LMAO Not me! To me, this is kind of fishy, something CBS put together to throw us off? :duno:
Whatever the eppie brings, it's sure to be fun to watch! I can't wait!

Sounds like she's definitaly afraid of hights. I'm hoping that this tower has nothing to do with it and they are able to get through the task fairly quickly.

Which looks to be hiking to a spot, filling a canteen/bag of sorts with water and hiking back. I think the detour is next, the choices being race downhill or race on a track. So far it looks like Meghan/Cheyne do the track. Sam/Dan, Erika/Brian, Maria/Tiffany, Matt/Gary do the snow. I am guessing the globetrotters do the snow (too big for a race car). Not sure about Lance/Keri, have they been spotted at either location in photos yet? That leaves Mika/Canaan. Could the pics of them at the Burj be for a Fastforward? If so, do they chicken out because Canaan is shown in the roadblock pics. Or is it the night they arrive, and to get the next clue they have to travel up to the top, via construction elevators? For someone with an extreme fear of heights, a simple task like that could be very daunting.
The racetrack still has me confused. If it is a detour, how do they present the 2 choices, snow/race car, in TAR speak?

Actually, I would think that the roadblock is the racetrack. The snow and the desert should be the detour. The Burj could be a miscellaneous task?

I will correct myself...there is no way, given Mika's fear of heights and the look on her face at the Burj, that if given the options of race or Burj, she would have chosen Burj. So the Burj is either just to get the first clue or a Fastforward. If it is the FF, then they must not have won it, or they backed out because Canaan is shown in the desert task. Can anyone tell in the picture of them with the hardhats on if it is evening, or early the next morning? I am clueless when it comes to that. The sun could be shining and I'd still guess late evening...LOL

The Nurj is either a FF or a general tasks for all of the teams. If the teams had to go to the top of the Burj, then Mika?canaan took a long time and fell far behind, or quit the task.
I wonder if the teams has to dig in the top of the snow hills to find a shovel for each team member, and then had to slide down separately. That would fit what we're seeing in the previews. Then the teams had to use the shovels to dig out snow for the snowman task outside.
Just my speculation.

I think Puddin is right, and the horse sign up sheet was for the Burj and the next clue. So that should make the race track the 2nd half of the detour. Unless this is a TAR first and the detour only has one option, and the track is the FF.

:lol: Looks like the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve is about 35 miles from the Dubai Mall, an easy drive along E66. (Note: The Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa is somewhere contained in the Desert Conservation Reserve, just as a point of reference)
...looks like I guessed right on the desert location... who says you can't tell one sand dune from another... :funny: ;)

My takes on this episode:
It was nice to see the Burj Dubai. Too bad there was no bungee-jumping, since the building was under construction.
The water task was intriguing. The detour was meh. Of course, quite a few times waste their time with the "find a needle in the haystack" option. On the other hand, the judges this season are way too generous. Interesting to see the snow in the desert though.
The fast forward was useless (and too easy). One a season? You should just get rid of it altogether. Would have been interesting to see Meghan and Cheyne racing this episode.
The self-driving made this episode so much more interesting by shuffling the order. Also liked the interaction in this episode. That made this episode the best so far this season. It gets a 9 out of 10.

This was the best episode so far, indeed! But I'm VERY discouraged by the "once a season" Fast Forward. What is the point? Bring it to at least 3 a season! And we all know that we need self-driving back! Navigation skill is an important part of the race.
The tasks this season are also way too stereotypical of the countries they visit. I'm not learning anything new about the countries by watching this. It has become too much about cheap entertainment rather than enlightenment.

Meghan and Cheyne - This is certainly the team to beat, they're just whizzing through the race all the time! I'm really happy that they're still doing well and working so well together. I'm starting to really love this team! But I thought that the Fast Forward was really lame, they should have asked for both team members to complete the race. Hmm.
Brian and Ericka - This was a great leg ran for them! They seem to have such good luck, finding the little snowman so quickly and all. Perhaps it's really karma, seeing that Brian's always so nice to everyone, and I just love that. Love how they're so in love with each other too. Let the good karma and love continue!
Flight Time and Big Easy - I didn't get much from them this episode, other than the fact that it was nice of them to tell Mika and Canaan how cold it was in the ski building, preparing them for the cold. They're still doing well.
Gary and Matt - Honestly, I wouldn't have expected this team to be working so well together, and doing so well on the race. They're one of the teams that has been really consistent ever since the second leg. It was impressive how they were near the back of the pack initially, but made up so much time.
Sam and Dan - Nice guys, love how they're always wanting to help Maria and Tiffany, even waited for their replacement car to arrive.
Maria and Tiffany - You've just gotta love these girls. Shrewd they might be, liars they might be, but they certainly aren't bad people. It was sweet of Tiffany to offer to let Sam/Dan use her ladle. That was really nice, she'd have had to wait for him, costing some time. And this isn't the type of behaviour we would expect from a team of liars I guess. But then again, they've only lied about their profession, otherwise they're still pretty nice girls to me. =)
Mika and Canaan - I thought that this team would be able to pick themselves up and do much better in the legs to come since episode 1 but till now, they're still hovering at the back so... Yeah, it won't be surprising if they're gone soon.
Lance and Keri - I actually thought that Lance wasn't all too annoying this episode. In fact, he was really nice at the pit-stop, even though they were last. I'd have expected some kind of meltdown and tremendous blaming placed on Keri but he took it very well and for once, I can say that I'm alright with this team, but I'm still not too sad to have them gone.
And we're now down to seven. It's getting evident that there are 5 more dominant teams, and 2 that will never do that well no matter how hard they try. Hmm. The all-male teams are really rocking this season aren't they. Anyway, here's my current ranking of teams:
1. Brian and Ericka 2. Meghan and Cheyne 3. Maria and Tiffany 4. Sam and Dan 5. Mika and Canaan 6. Gary and Matt 7. Flight Time and Big Easy
In fact, I like all seven teams remaining! :)
