Japan and Vietnam already for the first episode? Does this make 10 legs only?

Leg 1 Japan
Leg 2 Vietnam
Leg 3 Cambodia
Leg 4 UAE
Leg 5 UAE
Leg 6 Netherlands
Leg 7 Sweden
Leg 8 Estonia
Leg 9 CZ Republic
Leg 10 Las Vegas???

Or could Vietnam/Cambodia have two legs??? O_o I'm puzzled!

I'm completely unfamiliar with the regular viewing schedule, but does TAR normally run for 2 hours (8:00 -> 10:00)?

If not, then maybe its a double length episode (or something to that effect)?

I seriously thought it will be 2 hours worth of Japan to make the trip worth it. :ascared

Thanks for the title Amazing Race

Amazing Race 15 New

The two hour Intro came after the date change due to the Emmy shuffle, so we always thought the Intro would be two separate legs.
'The good news here is that we didn't miss anywhere! :yess:

Now...to make it fit: Blue is spec
Seems that either Tokyo is an extended Pitstop... OR there is more to VietNam than just HCMC (Mekong Delta??)

We have teams dep LAX 7/18
ARR Tokyo 7/19 (time change) between 403 and 417PM depending on the flight.
7/19 Get clues>>overnight bunch
7/20 Tasks >>Pitstop
7/21 either on to Nam or extended Pitstop in Tokyo
so Nam is either extended tasks 7/21 to 7/23 Pitstop
OR
dep to HCMC on 7/22 not 7/21

7/23 teams seen running to the Mat in HCMC

Mooyou, I think you may have it. Is there 2 eliminations in the first leg(Japan) and 1 in the second leg (Vietnam)? Precedent from AR10 suggests that there will be. Will there be a compensating leg added by doubling up elsewhere (other than UAE which is already slated by our thinking to be a double leg)? The most logical places to do that would be Japan or Vietnam, but the timing is not propitious. I think we will actually see only 10 legs: 8 elimination points (2 in the first leg), 1 final leg and the usual 3 NELs/TBCs.

I suspect it could be two legs in Vietnam. Prior visits to Vietnam have been two legs, IIRC, and a 10=week season would create a December schedule with no TAR.

Oh, no Kyoto then  :'(

Looks like Vietnam is in for two episodes as before (anybody notice the six-season interval between Vietnam visits and three-season interval between Japan visits). I sense a triple elimination.

Might wanna fix the timeline on the spoiler thread.

"Match the logo, not the number ... "

So they are given the state's license plate picture pattern?

Like Colorado has to Rocky Mountain along the top.  I see two California plates.

Where does luck come into it?

Maybe he was confused.

I'm hearing 'find the correct plate' in the promo?

Maybe they get to look at the plate they are seeking and then have to run over to the fence to find it.

I'm going to make the guess that the challenge was to see if teams would read the clue and properly interpret it.  It says to 'match the plate'.

So that means ignore the number on the plate.   That is why there are so many different kinds or plates from so many different states.

They have a picture of a plate from, say, Georgia and the number on it is 2SDF 764.  The correct choice will prove to be a plate from Georgia with the same peach stamp on it.  And that plate will have its own random numbers on it.

Fail to see this and you get to pick the best suite in Sequesterville.

First task looks difficult and surprising!

Oh yeah, I want to ask whether why CBS insists of an 8 country race. Is it because they didn't include the United States for it?

And if Vietnam is indeed two legs, gosh, All TAR seasons have 2 Vietnam legs, making it (I think) the country with the most 2 separate legs in a single country.

Nha Trang looked like a nice place to visit.

I can't think of a better way to outsed a team due to not reading the clue properly. At least we will think they deserved it, rather than luck doing them in!

Ericka & Brian have already selected their first try.  I wonder if the task was so cruel so as to give the racers modified pictures of the plate with numbers that actually turn up on the wrong plate from the fence.

So if there are license plates on the ground, then doesn't that mean that they would have to take the correct one off the wall and bring it to Phil?

Not to get off topic, I think everyone ignored my post on how I survived a japanese game show could be in the first leg because of the "JAPANESE GAME SHOW" Spoiler?

I don't think that's the case due to the following reasons:
The preview showed a different set from  the one at Majide.
Majide is not a real Japanese game show
ISAJGS is from the ABC network (TAR is from CBS), so I think they wouldn't cross-over (or do American rival networks do so?)
The host may be the same actor, though.
There are too many actual Japanese Game Shows to feature a fake one created for another reality show.

ABC Studios owns a part-interest in TAR, abd Disney, which owns ABC, handles TAR's international distribution. And Sony, headquartered in Japan, carries TAR on its intnerational satellite channnel, AXN.

So it's entirely possible that the Japanese entities involved with ISAJGS could be involved with this leg; even if its not the actual ISAJGS production.

surely is, because Maria Ho is an Asian and the 1st 3 legs of the race will visit 3 Asian countries and Maria will have a closer ties with the Asian locals there.  And hopefully she could speak both Japanese, Vietnamese and Khmer to get into the 1st team on the pit stop.  But the rest of the legs will be dominated by the Harlem Globetrooters because imo, they're the most competitive team on TAR 15 compare to Mark and Rovilson of TARA 2 and Nick and Starr of TAR 13.

btw, since the 1st leg will be in Tokyo, Japan, will there be any possible task on wearing or doing a cosplay in a Japanese anime that is quite similar to TARA 2?  I remember what Jeremy of TAR 9 said when he'd saw a Japanese girl wearing a gothic maid dress, and he said, "this is a naughty fantasy come true right here."  Remember that? ;D

My humble guess would be -
Maybe they need to find the 3 letter airport code for there first destination. like NRT for Tokyo.

Or the plate holds the address for the first destination.

Also  Kyū (級) is a Japanese term used in martial arts.

This is too much fun. I am so happy the show is back.

We don't know that the Harlem Globetrotters will be strong racers, or that they will be the "most competitive team" of the season. Physical abilities don't necessarily equate with racing skill. Remember Ray & Yolanda? Preston & Jennifer? The "strongest" racers are those who can focus and perform well under stress, not those who are physically the strongest. To me the only season where physical strength was practically the only measure of racing skill was season 10. All the others required more than just that.

NoLuckBoston,

I think you have got it. My guess is that teams have to find license plates for their home state, then they have to find one with a proper airport code. Of the plates shown I noteed these 3 character groups:

FLC
AKY
GIJ
UED
CPY
KYU
IKA

None of the above are valid airport codes. There would be NRT for Narita Airport on one plate on each state that is a home state.

I think this is an excellent test for the racers. Knowledge of airport codes is important. I hope that the hypothesis that this is the first task is correct.

The distribution of states among the teams is 6 (half) from California (this might be a record number and this time there are several from northern California), two from Tennessee, one from Montana, one from Massachusetts, one from Missouri and one from Louisiana.

Maybe the racers are given a list of international airport codes to check.  Maybe that list is posted behind them, where B/E are looking.

As Peach said, the racers where saying something about the logo and that sounds rather 'different' to me!

The "Logo" could be either the graphic used on state license plates (such as the Orange for Florida, the Peach for Georgia, etc.), or the phrase used on the plate in addition to the state name (New Hampshire "Live Free or Die," Delaware, "The First State," etc."  I'm guessing that the plate teams have to find has a "special" logo that's not really used on the vehicle plates.

Y'all listen to Chateau's video.
Did he say "I thought it was a traditional collage?" B/E seem to be looking back at another board/pattern.

That part has been so hard to make sense of (at about 1:08).  But when you use headphones it stands out as

"I could not figure out how to get it in drive.  Was that too much?"
"I know, it didn't .... "
"I thought it was a traditional column."
"I know, it was weird"
"When I got on the freeway I was in like  H H H ... H"

Do Mercedes have odd transmmision layouts?

The logo idea seems more plausible to me.

To eliminate a team just because they don't know the code for an airport in Japan? That just seems cruel and unusual to me.

Ancient Yoyogi Hachiman Shrine site
(Yoyogi Hachimangu Shrine, 5-1-1 Yoyogi)
Head up Yamate-dori St., which runs above the
train tracks from Yoyogi Hachiman Station, toward
Shinjuku, and the trees of Yoyogi Hachiman Shrine
will come into view on the right after a short walk.
Discovered in 1950, places
where pi l lars once stood
were unear thed along with
a dwelling site and numerous
artifacts. Estimating from
the pottery unearthed here,
people lived at this site approximately
4,500 years ago.
Today, a reproduction of an
ancient house of that time is
on display at the site.

=======================
An unusual cherry tree--where the number of petals varies from flower to flower--has reputedly been flourishing at this shrine since the latter part of the 12th century.

The main hall of Konno is the oldest extant building from the Edo period in this part of Tokyo. The shrine's gods, a white tiger and a tapir, grace either side of the hall. To the left of the main hall there is a stage for Noh theater.

I am going to guess that it is "Three Minutes Happines" store in Shibuya:

Three Minutes Happiness
With such low price tags on everything, it's easy to go a bit crazy at this two-story discount shop. Highlights include loads of affordable clothing, a towering bin of cute $2-per-pair underwear, and a bounty of bright hand towels (there are no towels in public restrooms, so everyone carries a reusable one).

I am further going to speculate that the reason teams are so visible at the pit stop is because it is a TBC (even though it has what appears to be a greeter with Phil) and they have to wait for something.

Peach I don't think you have the right station. This map above centers on Tochomae Station. It is on the same line (Toei Oedo) as Yoyogi station but that is the second station in that vicinity after Shinjuku station. Here is a map in English of the entire Tokyo subway system(Shinkjuku is in big letters and the other 2 stations are on either side on that line):

eta:  Looks like it's an easy trek till they get to Shibuya Crossing.  They may have to go through Shibuya Station to cross over the JR train tracks to get to the shrine.  Hope they don't lose anyone in the station.    Come to think of it, just Shibuya Crossing could be a nightmare herding a load of tourists through that maze.   :groan:

None of the work done previously by Peach or by me helps in finding where  Konno Hachimangu really is. Here is a writeup on it:

Konno Hachimangu
(3-5-12 Shibuya), a historical shrine said
to have been built in 1092. The Konnozakura
cherry tree to the side of the main
shrine has been designated a municipal
natural monument and is well known as
providing an unusual variety of cherry
whose branches bloom in both single and doublepetaled
flowers.

I can't copy this map, but it shows that this shrine is located very close to Shibuya station. This dovetails with the description boingo has provided to pass Three Minutes Happiness store on the way to Shibuya station.  You can see the location of this shrine in the map at the top right of this link: Konno Hachimangu Shrine (http://www.city.shibuya.tokyo.jp/eng/city_news/20070101pdf/p4.pdf)

Flights from Tokyo Narita Airport if on Monday July 18 (see note below) or one day later to HoChiMinh City were most likely VN951 1030 1430. They are also 3 nonstop flights late in the afternoon, but I estimate they are much less likely.

Note: I was doing the flight work for this from memory, assuming that they landed in Tokyo on Saturday July 16 , but I forgot about the International Date Line (who me?) and did not consult the calendar, which was off by 2 days from what was in my head.

I had checked the nonstop flights NRT to SGN for Tuesdays and they are essentially the same.

Teams don't arrive into Tokyo until Sun the 19th, I think we have been looking at Tues the 21st for a possible Pitstop release? Do those flights work then?

Chateau said that Liisa and Eric's pics were taken very early AM, so that works if the clock is set to LA time..

If we assume the Pitstop pic is taken by an LA camera that was not adjusted then that time translates to:

Quote
At the specified time, local time in Tokyo was 16 hours ahead of Los Angeles

Location       Local time        Time zone
Los Angeles (U.S.A. - California) Sunday, July 19, 2009 at 9:25:00 PM UTC-7 hours PDT
becomes:
Tokyo (Japan) Monday, July 20, 2009 at 1:25:00 PM UTC+9 hours

So perfectly possible.

I count 6 teams in the photo and maybe one that we can't see facing Phil so that's 6/7 teams  so maybe your question should be where are the other 4/5 teams.

There are 2 persons Behind Phil. Person 1 is circled with blue, Person 2 with red.

If you'll look closely, the larger blue circle contains the bottom part of Long Pants. Person 1 could be Ron, since he is the only one wearing it.

Also, if you'll look closely, you'll notice a shoulder near the Pitstop Greeters face. And that person is wearing Black Sleaveless dress, so it could be Marcy as the Person 2.

And is violet the color of the visor of the girl near the "Japan" Pitstop Mark? If it is, then it belongs to Tiffany & Maria.

THESE ARE JUST OBSERVATIONS.

I'd call it purple-ish. Especially the one by the woman in white's right shoulder (you can see the underside of it.)

Seems violet to me.

I get it! (I think so? Based on the observations)

The teams, Phil and the Pitstop Greeter are facing Tiffany and Maria?

REASONS:

1. Based from one of the pics in the Commercial Screencaps, Tiffany and Maria is seen holding a Purple/Violet flag, which means you'll shepherd purple-colored visored-Japanese people.
2. They are holding a Route Info Clue Card.
3. They not yet are visible to Pitstop, so it could be them.

If you are to check-in to pitstop, the proper order of team names are followed (it must be Tiffany and Maria order that Phil sees in his persepective. So Tiffany, wearing a sleaveless dress, should be the one we see holding the Route Info Clue Card.

THIS IS PURELY BASED ON OBSERVATION.

So if it is so, then they could have arrived 8TH (if it is indeed Marcy and Ron at Phil's back).

The plates which Slowhatch hypothesized as prefectural plates may instead be standard Japanes plates for:

keijidōsha (軽自動車?, lit. "light automobile"), a Japanese category of small automobiles, including passenger cars, vans, and pickup trucks. They are designed to exploit local tax and insurance relaxations, and in more rural areas are exempted from the requirement to certify that adequate parking is available for the vehicle. These standards originated in the times following the end of the Second World War, when most Japanese could not afford a full-sized car yet had enough to buy a motorcycle. To promote the growth of the car industry, as well as to offer an alternative delivery method to small business and shop owners, kei car standards were created.

The cars feature yellow licence plates, earning them the name "yellow-plate cars" (black numbers on yellow background for private use.

Here is a picture of one:

Now looking at it boot order-wise: We know Garrett & Jessica, Gary & Matt, Dan & Sam, Brian & Ericka and Herb & Nate have checked-in. Mika & Canaan, Marcy & Ron and Tiffany & Maria are supposedly on the pic as well, just hidden. The other three teams (Lance & Keri, Zev & Justin and Cheyne & Meghan) supposedly made it to Cambodia. So this means Japan is a NEL? And another thing: Cheyne & Meghan must've gotten very lost at the tourists task if we saw them high-fiving with Sam/Dan at presumably sometime during/after the RB task.

Another argument supporting the prefecture plates is the black on yellow, two of the three standard Race colors, which TPTB often use for tasks or marking points along the Race course.

We believe that teams left Narita by TAXI and proceded onto  Shiba Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shiba_Park) and Tokyo Tower (http://www.tokyotower.co.jp/english/).

They may have been looking for a "studio"  "green room" within Tokyo Towers.

The only "green room" reference I can find is for a Tokyo Tower Lounge (http://www.studiohousedesign.com/tokyo-towers-lounge-by-curiosity/) by Curiousity (http://www.curiosity.jp/eng/about/), a studio house design featuring a contemporary green motif.

While the observation deck is open until 945 PM, which the racers should have been easily able to make after their 4-ish plane arrivals... I am not sure of the hours that the lounge is open? It is located on the 54th floor. General tower hours are 9AM-8PM.

The hours of op could determine if they would be sleeping in the Park or heading for another clue... :lol3:

And hopefully they all changed lots of $$, as the fixed taxi fare from Narita to that area would be Y210,000, which would be approx $200.

We also had discussions at the time as to whether or not the green room referred to an actual GREEN room (as in a room that was green), or possibly to a TV studio "Green Room" as in waiting area for guests. I don't think we could tell 100% the answer to that based on the limited info we had at the time, although the Toyko Tower GREEN room is apparently very well known.

So to sum up:

Confirmed as safe on Leg 1 (Photo Evidence):
Gary & Matt
Garrett & Jessica
Brian & Ericka
Herbert & Nathaniel
Sam & Daniel

Possible Eliminations (Leg 1 only):
Eric & Lisa - CONFIRMED (12th Place).
Lance & Keri - Sighting in Vietnam was not confirmed.
Zev & Justin - If it was actually Sam & Dan in Cambodia.
Marcy & Ron - If they were not really spotted in Dubai (not likely). Possibly in Pit Stop photo.
Mika & Canaan - No future evidence (possibly also in Pit Stop photo).
Non-elim (11th Place)

Unnaccounted for in previews:
Meghan & Cheyne - Not spotted but confirmed as safe.
Tiffany & Maria - possibly at Pit Stop. Also confirmed as safe.

Tell me if there are any errors.

Personally, I think it is either a non-elim or Zev & Justin or Lance & Keri are toast. The latter fits better with past double-elim first legs, but they seem keen on surprising us this season, so it could be a non-elim.

Raymond:
With the left-hand drive and the incredible congestion of the greater Tokyo area, I cannot believe that World Race Productions would allow any teams fresh off a trans-Pacific flight to self-drive. Self-driving makes sense in some countries and some metropolitan areas, but not in Tokyo under those conditions.

Okay, I assume that after teams do the Roadblock they'll shepherd the audience in the Game Show Studio to the Pitstop.

(http://i37.[banned image hosting site].com/wlapfl.jpg)

These based on the visor color assignments:

Marcy & Ron = Blue
Lance & Keri = Pink
Tiffany & Maria = Violet/Purple
Mika & Canaan = Orange
Meghan & Cheyne = Red

On the pic of the Roadblock below, Sam & Dan is at the Roadblock with the Pink, Violet, Yellow, and Red group behind. If teams do collect the audience after the Roadblock to the pitstop, therefore the respective racers (Pink=Lance&Keri) (Violet=Poker Gals) (Yellow= Ericka & Brian) and (Red= Meghan & Cheyne) are still either Doing the Roadblock or have not yet arrived at the Roadblock while Sam & Dan does the Roadblock

BUT, based on the other pics we have, it seems that Sam & Dan, Meghan & Cheyne, Ericka & Brian, and Marcy & Ron are head-to-head at the Roadblock.

From this we can assume that Visor team Yellow, Red, Violet, and Pink have not yet departed in this pic (See Pic 2)

There are actually 3 people behind Phil and the mat. If you look closely, you will see that Marcy's shoulders are exposed meaning that here hands are going down. If you look behind Marcy's head, you will see a small Beige blob which probably is the Father of the Father son team (circled in Yellow). Finally there is a guy at the far right side. If he is a team then Maria and Tiffany will be 9th leaving 2 more teams to come in.

Has there EVER been a greeter in a TBC?  ???

Perhaps a NEL is the way, but does that mean a speedbump right off the bat?

IMHO this appears to be a BVM "pitstop mashup".    Greeter  , Phil  , pitstop sign ,  bathmat  :duno: (can't see it),  racers waiting  :duno: (haven't seen this since Season 1, where Phil never appeared except to eliminate the last team).
maybe a "retro" pitstop.   :duh:  We are clearly in uncharted territory here.    :browsie:

It could be, or it could mean the Vietnamese areas north or south of HoChiMinh City where many many battles of the Vietnam War took place.

I don't want to link to the blog because of the copyrights but its EASY to find haha so help me make sense of this please ..

Lets see where the blogger has been:

July 22nd
I'm sitting in my hotel room in Ho Chi Minh city, having just returned from a two day trip to the Mekong Delta (in Southern Vietnam...details to come, so hold your horses).

He left HCMC to meet a group of people to tour the Mekong..:

on day one nothing much happened, the blogger biked to a guest house and had  dinner and thats where he stayed overnight
... the next day he visited the floating markets and stopped at the Cu Chi tunnels then ended up back in his room that night in HCMC

The next day he traveled to Nha Trang...so that should be the 23rd

so now the new blog enrty starts on July 26th:

*we stumbled upon the Amazing Race being filmed in Vietnam (both on the Mekong and in HCMC)
*was so excited to take a picture with Phil (the host)
*Second, they were told not to tell anybody that TAR was being filmed here.

Two days ago (or three days ago...) we spent one last morning in HCMC and went to the War Remnants Museum (yes Hayley, we went).
That afternoon, we made for Nha Trang. July 23rd

They were in Nam  between the 21st to the 23rd, based on presumed/known pitstop in Japan and KNOWN sightings in Phnom Penh 24-25th.

SInce we have info about the "pitstop" in HCMC on the 23rd...then my guess is first leg Mekong Delta, second leg HCMC city.

And based on all the research we did when TARA 3 was there, I would love to see more floating cities like Cai Be.

And don't forget the ducks.   :snicker:  LOTS of ducks.

Cu Chi is currently a city of 200,000 population with the major tunnels about 50 km to 70 km northwest from HoChiMinh City. During the Vietnam War this is where an infamous tunnel system used by the Viet Cong to secretly transport munitions, food etc. existed. That tunnel system was 250 kilometers in total length.

To get there a direct taxi from HoChiMinh City is reported to cost about $45. A bus to Tay Ninh is possible, but then you need to switch to a motorbike (cost reportedly $6) because there is no public tranport to the tunnels.

This fits my prediction that there would likely be something connected with the Vietnam War either north or south of Saigon; a visit to the Cu Chi tunnels is logical as well as historic.

crickets chirping...

Caanan was at the pit stop...

CBS is trying to steal the scene and make RFF's job easier this time though...  :ascared

With the pictures of Phil being with almost every other teams, could it actually be post race, as Phil might be telling the teams to thank the "out of towner Japanese" (If that's what they want us viewers to know) a round of applause and thanks for the leg?

TBC's don't normally have greeters. We have a greeter.

And this was always 2 legs we believe. They are just running them together because the Emmy changing dates last minute screwed our schedule.

Find the correct plate for your next destination city.
品川should be right because it's in Tokyo,
but Matt got the green 北县one, which  is not in Tokyo,so it was not correct.

Entertainment Weekly with the CBS map and teasers (http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2009/09/24/the-amazing-race-15-exclusive-reveal-of-the-route-plus-teases/) for the first two legs from BVM.

Quote
• The action begins at the Los Angeles River, and for the first time in show history, a team will be eliminated mere yards from the starting gate. The challenge involves a fence with thousands of license plates—some of them from Japan (which serves as the first destination). “Twenty four people run up and frantically start grabbing license plates, but they’re wrong because as usual they don’t read their clue,” chuckles van Munster. “Eventually a team gets eliminated—they see the cars drive off and it is bye-bye. We told them 100 times, ‘Read your clue. Repeat after me: Read your clue.’ They don’t read the clue. It’s unbelievable. Nothing has changed.”

• Once they get to Tokyo, Racers find themselves on a Japanese game show, and they have to eat a tear-inducing Wasabi bomb. Notes van Munster: “Even the Japanese are horrified by it, which is good. If the Japanese are horrified by another game show, then we’re on the right track.”

• When contestants arrive in Vietnam, they face down a Roadblock involving 2,000 ducks. “You have to show how good you are in guiding these ducks from one end of a soccer field, across a little bridge to the other end, turning them around and bringing them back into the pen,” explains van Munster. “It turns into total duck madness. It’s just hysterical… I’ve tried for eight years to integrate it into the show, and we never succeeded in getting [contestants] to do it. They know it’s too difficult. So I said, ‘Roadblock!’”

There are a couple more teasers for later legs (Dubai; and the Switchback)

The duck task sounds awfully like a switchback (remember, it was the other side of the famous ox detour)

I still find it hard to believe that CBS and WRP would eliminate a team because they can't speak a foreign language.

My guess is that the task works similar to the scale we saw at the end of TAR 12. Teams are given a criteria that only a certain license plate meets, and they have to find it.

If so, my money's on Zev to finish the task first.

Or Maria/Tiff, if Jerry's right about the task. And as for the ducks, it had potential, but was offered alongside ratings gold. So I'm glad it is reused. :D

The duck task this time is a roadblock.

From what BVM said in the EW article, he has tried to get Racers to choose that task in the past, but not as a roadblock.  And it's not the Switchback roadblock, simply because the duck task hasn't been used in tha past as a roadblock.

'The Amazing Race 15': 5 reasons you should get on this trip

Entering its 15th season, the Emmy Award-winning "Amazing Race" has probably already won you over with its combination of global thrills, interpersonal strife and eye-opening experiences. It's proved itself to be both slickly produced and a paragon of class in a television category that's more often than not devoid of either. So when a screener for the two-hour season premiere, which airs Sunday at 8 p.m. on CBS, fell into my lap the other day, I quickly devoured it with the appetite of an obsessive devotee.

If you were on the fence about tuning in for another season of squabbling spouses and bickering best friends, here are five reasons why you must tune in Sunday.

Starting line shocker: I jokingly called this twist during the opening seconds of the episode, but my jaw hit the floor when I saw that producers were willing to go through with my little wishful prediction. Within the first few minutes of the two-hour opener, the contestants are shown in no uncertain terms that this season of the "Race" is serious business and that the stakes are higher than ever. It's a major game-changer, and a first for "Amazing Race" that speaks volumes about just how surprising this season has the potential to become.

Wasabi bombshell: One of the episode's most hysterical sequences is the team's first challenge, where they have to participate in a torturous Japanese game show segment called "Sushi Roulette." In front of a manic host and a deranged audience, the contestants must spin a gigantic wheel and eat various sushi before landing on a Japanese horseradish-stuffed “wasabi bomb,” which they must swallow within two minutes. Seeing the contestants deal with the searing heat of the wasabi and the howls of laughter from the amused audience (and the wacky on-screen graphics) is an experience you won't soon forget. Or stop laughing from.

Scam artists: Not one but two teams attempt to pull off scams in the opening episode, with one team -- professional poker players Maria and Tiffany -- going so far as to pose as underpaid social workers who deal with homeless youth in order to throw off the scent of the other contestants. After all, there's a long-standing stigma on the "Race" against wealthy competitors, so either the poker-faced women are pulling off a major coup or they are going to quickly become despised by their fellow racers once they find out the truth about their financial status and champagne lifestyle. Still, turnabout is fair play, as Maria and Tiffany will find out, as gay brothers Sam and Dan pretend to be straight and flirt with the women in order to form an alliance. Who’s holding the cards now, ladies?

Underdogs aplenty: Every season needs a good underdog, and this season of "Amazing Race" has more than one. There's sexagenarian couple Ron and Marcy from San Francisco who happen to kick the asses of some of their younger competitors on the first leg of the race. This duo proves that fitness doesn't know age; they're into rock climbing, Kung Fu, archery, kickboxing and trapeze work. There's also Gary and Matt, a mismatched father and son team from Montana who seem diametrically opposed: dad's a hunter, son's a gamer; dad's gone gray, son has vivid pink hair. Plus, Matt was nearly killed when he was hit by a car and has gotten himself into shape again. "Amazing Race” does love a story about overcoming adversity. ... And then there's best friends Zev and Justin from Los Angeles. Justin works for National Lampoon, and Zev has Asperger's syndrome; despite their differences, these two have an unbreakable bond of friendship that was forged via Zev's unexpected (and wicked) sense of humor. Look for this duo to face down some challenging odds and hopefully come out the other side even stronger.

You don’t want to see this Hulk angry: What season of "Amazing Race" would be complete without a villain? This season, that role falls to overbearing self-described "street lawyer" Lance, who is racing with his fiancée, finance manager Keri. Lane, whom one contestant calls a "meathead" early on this season, has a hyper-aggressive manner and a decidedly lacking verbal filter that quickly put him at odds with his fellow racers ... and the audience at home. After all, there's always one team that you want to see eliminated just for running the race with the wrong attitude, and this hulking testosterone factory fits the bill. But there's a reason we love to hate these misguided villains, and Lance adds the necessary tension and drama to sustain the early rounds of the competition.

I don't want to spoil the rest of the exciting two-hour premiere, but hopefully your appetite has been whet for the further twists and turns this globe-spanning adventure has in store for the rest of the season. See you at the Pit Stop.

she got the right one...  :jumpy:

That would be awsome! But just because she's Chinese, it doesn't mean she can read Japanese. Both are written in different characters.

On the clue it says 品川,well I used a chinese keyboard to type that.

What I'm trying to say is that there are alo of similarities

Zev's got an unexpected (and wicked) sense of humor?  I wonder where he got it from?  I don't have a wicked sense of humor (usually), but I've got a good one courtesy of a nutty dad.  Don't worry, Dad's not nutty in a bad way -- his sense of humor's nutty.

If anyone can read this, it might tell us exactly where we are.

But after TARA 3, I know that Cai Be is a floating market town. See how that ramp slants down? I'll bet $$ that they are heading to a boat/boats.

But do we see everyone there? Counting noses....

Oops...puddin is way too quick for me...more pics!! Yippee!

When I was groe\wing up, our next door neighbors had a Beijing duck as a pet along with their beagle.  That was before my family adopted our first schnauzer. And that was a smart duck. (It even protected the beagle one time from a large German Shepherd by nipping it on its snout!)
So I suspect we'll have trained ducks and not-so-well trained Racers. That will be interesting.

The kanji, by itself--品川 (Shinagawa ward)--doesn't appear to be meaningful. Tokyo tower is in the Minato ward. From the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shinagawa,_Tokyo):
Quote
Shinagawa is also home to the main motor vehicle registration facility for central Tokyo (located east of Samezu Station). As a result, many license plates in Tokyo are labeled with the name "Shinagawa."

Thud is the sound you hear when they pull the rug out from under you.   :groan:

The clue-for-show says "When you land, make your way to the Tokyo Tower Studios."

So that means get there any way you can right?  But, we know from the LAX UA gate area that the teams are required to take a taxi to get there.   :duno:

So that requirement must be written into the additional information.  But I always thought we could go by what the main clue says.

Most likely the duck Roadblock must be after the mud Detour in Vietnam. That's why the people doing the Roadblock already look dirty.

Awesome preview of the first episode!  :colors I'm a little worried about the music editing though; it was kind of strangely mixed in that preview.

And if there IS anyone going home on Leg 1 after Eric & Lisa, it would have to be an invisible team. It's a non-elim. :yess:

As far as the exif goes, all the photos are marked between 16:20 and 17:20 on 21 July for Cai Be (no allowance made for time zones or camera clock). The dock photo is labeled as "The teams of THE AMAZING RACE 15 wait for the Ben Tau Du Lich Dock to open so they can perform one of the Detours." I've run it through a couple of translators and the closest I've come up with is just "tourist pier."

Here's the site: http://cuulongtourist.com/index.php

Here's a pic from the site: http://cuulongtourist.com/uploads/gallery/IMG_0735-fixed.jpg

Matches the mud Detour. :P I'll try to search for pics matching the roof.

Yes, getting closer I think; the sign might read "Cuulong tourism." (Cuulong--"Nine Dragons"--is what the Vietnamese call the Mekong Delta) A photo (http://cuulongtourist.com/gallery.php?m=full_image_size&image_id=104) from the site you mentioned shows similarities.

I checked the site and they offer canal trips to An Binh Island. Possible they do the Detour there?

ETA: If it is Cuulong Tourist, then Vinh Long is a possibility for tasks as well. And Cuulong also offers trips to the Cu Chi Tunnels. :D

ETA2: According to site, An Binh Island is known for its fruit trees. They could very well do the mud Detour here.

I don't see anything resembling a stadium around Cai Be (must be a really tiny one), and I don't think there's a hotel either. Would they have been ferried to Vinh Long or Ho Chi Minh City for the Pit Stop, and then released there?

For those looking for game points, peach called this one ..

Semi-spoiler, though the competition’s first foreign destination is mentioned in listings log-lines: The title of tonight’s two-hour premiere episode — actually a line uttered by Lang referencing his 6-foot-9 partner — is, “They Thought Godzilla Was Walking Down the Street.”

Boy, that task can't possibly be as hard as it's going to look, if I can pick out a Japanese licence plate from here. The bright yellow one in the top row, with only four numbers on it, is Japanese.

I agree with you, how could it be THAT hard. :duno:

All you have to do is match the words given to you on the clue with one of them, so you automatically can rule out all american license plates.

Easy to Say, Difficult when you are there.

You see, to us viewers, it will seem to be very easy to match and snatch plates. But to the racers, it would be difficult. How would you read your clue properly if you are in a hurry? There's too much tension there, so the simple task made difficult due to misreading clue which is due to the pace and the twist of the Starting Line

It doesn't really mean that they can't be eliminated first because BVM said they overcome many obstacles. He's not going to make a comment like "Well, they didn't last very long so ... etc"....

I hope it's not them though :(

And then there's best friends Zev and Justin from Los Angeles. Justin works for National Lampoon, and Zev has Asperger's syndrome; despite their differences, these two have an unbreakable bond of friendship that was forged via Zev's unexpected (and wicked) sense of humor. Look for this duo to face down some challenging odds and hopefully come out the other side even stronger.

Last team to arrive? saved by NEL?

According to the artical, Justin is the son of the director of some "Revenge Of The Nerds" movie. Now I can see them at the convention as well. So It's anybodys guess!

I ask though, isn't it possibale this is just a hoax. It had to be recent, as the eliminated teams are sequesterd during the race, and we know CBS wouldn't alow them to go around saying how they placed.

Celaestor,
Someone managed to trick you. It is NOT a fact yet that Japan is a NEL. I judge about a 65% probability of NEL and 35% of TBC, so it could end up as a TBC or NEL. The only fact is that it should be one of the other based on all the reported sightings of all 11 teams remaining after the start line elimination of Eric and Lisa.

Based on teh wording I am thinking they are talking about who was 2nd to last at the elimination point.  SO the way I read it a team in red comes close to getting eliminated.

At worst it means they were last at the end of the leg, but I honestly think they mean at the first task they are the last team that actually does get a plane ticket.

I'm still feeling Garrett & Jessica for last on Leg 2 though, regardless of what this article says. If not Garrett & Jessica, than Zev & Justin are out. Also remember that there aren't any confirmed sightings of Marcy & Ron beyond LAX. No matter how it turns out, the first episode elims will be sad for me. :(

This leg could be topsy-turvey.

Here's what I think based on past info:

TBC's have no greeter, right?

NEL's have a greeter.

We have a greeter.....ergo

NEL.

But CBS could do things differently at any point, so :duno:

They boarded the first flight, AA169. So that leaves the possibility they ment last finishing the roadblock or checking in at the pit stop.

Yeah, some interesting editing. Here's a floor plan (http://www.tokyotower.co.jp/english/03_foottown/1f.html) of "Foot Town." I don't see a studio on any floor, but something might be jury-rigged I suppose. What you suggested is more likely: the actual filming was at Shibuya NHK. I was SO beyond THRILLLLLLED that Meghan and Cheyne won the first leg!!!! Here's the story that Meghan & Cheyne were actually at Season 14's Finals Casting.  They and my mom & I were in same group for whole week. We knew they would be a pretty strong team and we hoped that we would get on the race together and form an alliance together but they got cut at very last minute before the finals' over :-(   I adore Meghan to death - we got in contact when the Season 14 cast was announced and became really good friends ever since. I'm just SO beyond thrilled that they got to compete on new season!! Root for them!!!

The CBS site states no detours

1501 ROUTE MARKERS

Route Marker: Teams had to search a wall containing over one thousand license plates for one of only eleven from the Shinagawa District of Tokyo, their first destination. Teams with an eye for detail could notice the Japanese symbol for Shinagawa printed at the top of their clue that corresponded to the correct plate. Teams that found a correct license plate would receive a ticket on one of two flights to Tokyo. The team left without a plate would be the first team ever eliminated at the starting line. ERIC/LISA ELIMINATED

Roadblock: A Roadblock is a task that only one person can perform. In this Roadblock, the game show host would spin a wheel containing nine sushi rolls and two wasabi bombs. Wasabi, a spice carrying extreme heat, is Japan’s version of scorching horseradish. The contestants had to eat what ever landed in front of them on the wheel, but they needed to keep playing until they received a wasabi bomb. When they did, they had only two minutes to consume this fireball of flavor to receive their next clue.

Performed Roadblock: DAN, CHEYNE, RON, BIG EASY, BRIAN, MARIA, GARRETT, CANAAN, JUSTIN, LANCE, GARY

Detour: N/A

Order of Finish
1.    Meghan & Cheyne
2.    Zev & Justin
3.    Lance & Keri
4.    Marcy & Ron
5.    Flight Time & Big Easy
6.    Brian & Ericka
7.    Gary & Matt
8.    Garrett & Jessica
9.    Sam & Dan
10.    Mika & Canaan
11.    Maria & Tiffany

1502 ROUTE MARKERS

Roadblock: A Roadblock is a task that only one person can perform. In this Roadblock, that team member, using only two flags as a guide, had to herd a group of 150 ducks, used in Vietnam farms to rid rice patties of damaging insects, out of their pen, across a bridge and back again, and then return to their pen. If teams didn’t complete the task within the 10-minute time limit, they would relinquish their spot and wait for another turn.

Performed Roadblock: MEGHAN, MARCY, JESSICA, ZEV, ERICKA, MATT, SAM, KERI, FLIGHT TIME, MIKA, TIFFANY

Detour: N/A

Order of Finish
1.    Gary & Matt
2.    Flight Time & Big Easy
3.    Sam & Dan
4.    Lance & Keri
5.    Zev & Justin
6.    Meghan & Cheyne
7.    Maria & Tiffany
8.    Mika & Canaan
9.    Marcy & Ron
10.    Brian & Ericka

:groan:  Quite the "hack job" thay gave the first episode, all right.  Not to mention that the start of the second leg did not take place at the temple, but rather in Shinjuku (probably by the pit-stop hotel) as the globetrotters are seen immediately walking over to the Tokyo Hilton to check flights to HCMC.

So out goes the mandatory overnight rest period, mystery travel from Tokyo Tower in Roppongi to Shibuya to get to the temple, and starting the second leg in Shinjuku.  ...which doesn't surprise me as they wouldn't be allowed to use the temple grounds after dark

I still think that the starting line twist is really harsh. But well, just goes to show that the stakes are higher than ever, and teams really cannot afford to make a single mistake, they've got to stay alert every single moment! Other than that, I really love the premiere, they've got some cool tasks there. Love the Sushi Roulette!

Gary and Matt - Pinky and the brain!!!! Loved that description by Brian and Ericka (I think it was from them). They're working pretty well together, coming in first for the second leg. Other than the pink hair, I still don't get much from them but after all, it's still early.

Flight Time and Big Easy - Physical threats they are, but they're pretty nice people. Loved how they worked so nicely with the tourists in Japan. Just hope that the alpha male vibes don't come up.

Sam and Dan - I really like this team, love their enthusiasm in the race. They do quarrel and all, but that's part of being brothers I guess. They're close!

Lance and Keri - Lance annoys me but on the whole, they're not so detestable yet, so I'm still neutral. Wouldn't mind if they go home soon though, since I kinda like the rest of the teams lol.

Zev and Justin - I'm starting to like this team, it really was sweet of Zev to give his jacket to the bus driver. They're rather funny people, looking forward to seeing more of them on the race.

Megan and Cheyne - Well it's only been two legs, but it seems that this team is already surfacing as a threat. They've done pretty well for both legs. I'm liking them for now, they're nice to each other and work really well together. I hope that this continues, and I might root for them.

Maria and Tiffany - Great comeback at the duck-herding! I'm so glad that the first leg was an NEL, wouldn't have been happy to see them go. They're really playing the game though, lying and all that, not so sure I really approve of that but I'm still liking them, they're really tough nuts. Just look at Maria during the Roadblock! I was really impressed when she was done with the wasabi the second time and did not give up.

Mika and Canaan - They seem to be consistently bringing up the rear don't they. They're simply not aggressive enough, don't think they'll last. But I still really like them, they're so sweet and cute! I just love how Canaan carried the Japanese tourist all the way to the mat and kept asking if she was alright. That was really cute.

Marcy and Ron - Hmm, they seem pretty boring to me now. But they've got a fighting spirit!

Brian and Ericka - It was amazing how they went from last to sixth place in Japan! Thankfully, they weren't eliminated in Vietnam, that was just so close. I really, really love this team, they might shout at each other occassionally but their love and support for each other ultimately still moves me. Hope they do better next time!

Garrett and Jessica - Wasn't too sad over their elimination, since most of the other teams are far more likeable, to me at least. It must have hurt for Garrett though, seeing Jessica struggling with the ducks and not be able to do anything. Let's just hope he won't hold her accountable for that, she really did her best.

Eric and Lisa - It's terrible to go out that way I guess. But I admire how they took it. Sad to see them go, but well, the race is far more exciting than ever!

Great legs, all in all. We can see that the all-male teams are really dominating. But they're still pretty likeable so far, I'll keep hoping that it stays this way and the alpha-male thing doesn't come up.

It's so obvious that about half the Japan leg was edited out to make way for the starting line challenge. There should have been 1.5-2 hrs for the Tokyo leg alone, so that we can get to know the teams better while still having a sufficient amount of challenges in that leg.

Meh, I could care less about the loss of a few detours, as long as there's at least 2-3 tasks (including roadblocks) per episode. By that logic, TPTB should always put a U-turn with their detours (detours are expensive, while u-turns are free: might as well make sure both tasks are aired).

My thoughts on these two legs:
The license plate task was great in execution, though I found the early elim slightly cruel. Next time, go back to 10-11 teams and use the task to determine who gets early flights.

Japan threw me off; wasn't your conventional TAR leg. Navigating the streets somewhat saved that leg, but that high-pitched "Eat the Wasabi" got really annoying after a while. 5/10.

On the other hand, the Cai Be leg was filled with a lot of bunching. However, the tasks and various locales visited made that leg far superior to Tokyo, even though it seemed as if the teams stayed in one area. Mud task: Good. Ducks: win. 9/10.

Okay, finally got down to pen down my thoughts for TAR 15 season premiere. It was a blast, though it was very abrupt at certain points throughout the show (A roadblock in Japan and then pitstop?) But i enjoyed episode 1 of TAR 15 thoroughly.

I was very surprised with Meghan and Cheyne, the way they worked flawlessly together and gave so much support for one another. I guess first impressions really isn't spot on always. I had the impression that Cheyne will be a chauvinistic and idealistic male individual, thus resulting in many rifts and quarrels for this team. But i was wrong! He was not only appreciative of what he's doing (He was in awe with the Japanese game show when arriving at the scene) and he was also a darn good boyfriend as well. I'm not surprise that this team made the F3, and can't wait to see how they will possibly have a large chance of winning this if they continue to work well together. My current favourite team so far, quite unexpected for me really.

Another team which i grew to like was Maria and Tiffany. These two girls, they just know how to play with the hearts of people and i can't help but to want to root for them, seeing their determination to do well and move on further into the race. Was glad that the race first ever first pitstop NEL was used on them, but disappointed at the same time that Eric and Lisa were eliminated at the starting line from the lame starting twist. But i give in, the TAR producers had me on my toes watching Lance and Keri and Eric and Lisa fighting for the last liscene plate. And i think i will grow to love Lisa if they did moved on into the race.. but they didn't.. awww well.

Brian and Ericka surprised me by doing so badly on the other hand. Nearly eliminated on both legs of the race? That doesn't spell good. I was kinda disappointed when Brian lost his cool on Ericka at the Duck Roadblock. But at the same time, i can't help but to love Ms America for being so candid at all times and i really like them alot, hopefully they will do better and don't disappoint their fans. Sam and Dan were nice people and manly in their own way despite being gay. Nothing of John and Scott or Lynn and Alex (thank God!) vibes coming from them for me. Very fun to watch, seeing how they need to work well together as brothers.

Loved the Japanese game show, but hated that Japan leg is barely 40 mins long. Would love to see teams running around Japan rather than get stuck in a studio.. but i guess the running around at Shibuya Crossing made it up. And i wonder when Mika and Canaan left their tourist behind, why was the tourist able to continue walking despite them leaving her behind. Maria and Tiffany's tourist just stood there in the middle of nowhere waiting for them to pick them up. Seems abit unfair here to me. Maybe because Mika and Canaan were very near to the pitstop.. but still.. they left her behind. She should have just stopped and not walk anymore and wait for M/C to pick her up.

Oh.. love Marcy as well. Surprise surprise! This old couple is doing so well and it's darn fun to watch them just work well together and beat out younger and more capable teams. Let's hope they're able to go as far as possible into the race. Gary and Matt, FT and BE were just getting the usual all-male teams edit.. very little confessional and screentime. Need to see more of them to get a good idea of them. But both seemed to be extremely competitive and nice teams.

OH YES, LOVEEE Zev and Justin. Zev, aka the Duck Whisperer.. is simply fun to watch and i can't help but to seem to want to root for this team here, which kinda give me an Oswald and Danny vibe.. doing it slowly and correctly.. and still doing really well for the race. Can't wait to see more dynamics coming from this team. But on the other hand, i'm sick of all the dynamism coming from Lance instead. Hello Lance, the race is not all about brawns, other wise Derek and Drew and a whole lot of other alpha teams would have won the race. And you don't even look like you're muscular and fit or what, you just have big biceps. :funny:

The flood in Vietnam is <, something you won't see in your everyday life and appreciating your comfort zone even more. Hilarious mud challenge and this must be one of the most entertaining Roadblocks ever. I've done something like this before for fun and duck herding is definitely not fun. If you get just one irritating duck who refused to listen to your instructions, you're bound to get a hard time. The way to deal with it is to be calm and move the flag slowly in the direction you want your ducks to head towards to, because the more nervous you appear, the more they think you're going to harm them and go against you. TThis is probably the reason why when some of the girls who failed the challenge at first try who started screaming when the ducks went all berserk continue to do badly after a few attempts and only get it right after a long time.

All in all, love every moment of TAR 15 and can't wait to watch more!

Agree with you here, Joab, that was my first impression of them too, that they'd be a typical, bickering couple. I like them currently, but gotta hope that they stay nice and continue to work well together instead of transferring to a bickering couple.

My expectations for this season were already low, based on the spoilers and the cast.  Couples and all-guy teams usually are my least favorite teams, and they had 11 of them.

I didn't like the first two episodes.

Here's what disappointed me:

1) Starting the race from a sewer.  This might have been the worst starting location ever.

2) No detours.

3) Unexciting tasks.  I don't know why they had two similar tasks -- Leading people in episode 1, and leading ducks in episode 2.

I prefer TAR:Asia 3's first Vietnam leg to episode 2.

I hope things get better.

We know a few things so far:
  • The Tokyo arrival was in late afternoon, and the tourist walk was in the morning
  • Teams can be seen entering a studio near 6:00 (morning?evening?) and leaving the same room/building with tourists in tow (below)
It's clear enough (plenty of vidcaps) that the tourist walk started near Muscle Theater, went south on Koen-dori, through the scramble and east to the shrine.
And, unless they bussed in the same crowd with the same clothes, the filming was done at NHK. Below are two comparisons: a fellow in a duckbill hat (Team Pink), and a t-shirt lady and golf shirt man (Team Red).

Nice findings Slowhatch.  The strange thing that still bugs me is why  we don't see the multi-tiered release of teams (after the overnight).  Is it possible that they arrived at the studio in several waves and just had to wait until the game show started.  If they get there at 6 am they must have either waited about 4 hours or had to do some unshown task at that location.   :duno:

I can make a time estimate for when the red group near the CC Lemon Hall in Shibuya.  There was a shadow for that shot.  It's noonish on the plus side!

Like Slowhatch said, they definitely start out by Muscle Theater which is near NHK.  Marcy and Ron are initially going 180 degrees in the wrong direction.  All the locations where we can place the groups make a dotted line from NHK down to the shrine.

And!!! what happend to "The Green Room" are we the only ones who heard about that?     Edited out just like so many things that get spoiled.

As we knew at the outset...

A green room could be an actual GREEN ROOM...or a TV studio place to wait ...

Sounds like now that it could have been the second.

perhaps we're overlooking the obvious: the studio is the green room. It can't be a place to wait as the teams entered the studio upon their arival.

This timing thing really is unusual even with the editing. TPTB gave the departure and arrival times for the flights, and that the teams were directed to the "Tokyo Tower Studios" and the editing was trying to make it appear that the game show roadblock took place the same day (with no hint of any time overnight until the teams depart the pit stop at the beginning of leg 2. The problem with this attempted deception is the departure times for lwg 2 which we're told is a normal 12-hour pitstop (and included the two-hour penalty for Maria and Tiffany.) Those departure times do, in fact, imply that all of the teams arrived at the Shrine between 12:15 and 1:20 in the afternoon, and not in the late afternoon or dusk of the previous day (i.e., the afternoon of arrival.)

What I think happened is that teams got to the Tower, were sent to a nearby hotel for the night, and were probably transported to or near the NHK studio and released to get to the roadblock task in the same order they reached the Tower the afternoon before. I think its highly likely that both of those tasks could be completed within three or four hours so teams could have a 12-hour pitstop, and not be able to fly to Ho Chi Mihn City before that 10:30 am flight. If there was a task, then it was a route marker to burn up time that morning before the teams entered the NHK studios.

This is my speculation based mistly how BVM and company have done things in the past. But I am comfortable with it, you know?

.......

I get very annoyed when WRP gives undeservevd publicity to Japan Air Lines when in fact JL 5133 departing NRT at 1030 for SGN was nothing but a codeshare designation for VN951. JL5133 is labelled "Japan Airlines Operated by Vietnam Airlines". So why didn't Vietnam Airlines not get a picture of their plane in the air and get the sign (instead of JAL)? I have to guess that some sort of promotional deal was cut with JAL that could not be with Vietnam Airlines.

I also get annoyed when WRP uses some arbitrary logic for determining the length of a penalty even though they apparently labelled the "lead tourist group to the pit stop" task as not a general task, only warranting a 2 hour penalty. I think 4 hours would have been more appropriate for non-completion of that task (refer to thet AR7 Mendoza meat eating ROADBLOCK for several 4 hour penalties for non-completion that look comparable to me). Maria and Tiffany were given a 2 hour gift in my reckoning. However, either penalty would have had the same result, easily making the 1030am flight to HoChiMinh City the next morning.

Actually, a starting line task in the future could be useful for determining staggered departure times if there's an HOH at the first destination. It might spare us some drama just to put everyone on one flight.

The leading the group to the pit stop task was not part of the Roadblock. It's controlled by the route info clue the teams received at the completion of conauming the wasabi bomb for the roadblock. That said, it's not subject to the penalty for not completing the roadblock. The task was not a detour, either, and as far as I can remember, the only time a penalty was assessed for not completing a detour was the 24 hour penalty assessed against Nancy and Emily in TAR Classic.

Nor can I recall there has ever been a penalty for a team not completing any other task until now. So it may well be that this was the first instance of such a penalty on original US-flavored TAR.  I haven't watched any of the regional versions (except for parts of some episodes here and there, so I can't speak as to those. It may be that the two-hour penalty has been there all along, and maybe a former Racer can speak as to whether in their season such a penalty was briefed with them in their pre-Race preparations.

From a former racer:

"IIRC we were told that, in general, there would be a 2 hr penalty for not completing any TASK, and a 4 hr penalty for not completing a RB.  I recall there was some discussion of producer flexibility to penalize teams at producers discretion to resolve any inequities."

2. Why do Lance and Keri just run off and not get their ticket?

Please enlighten us detectives  ;D

PS. Sorry for my crappy screenshot

Yes, it's quite enlightening.  Usually don't get to see that on the air.

You may have missed Chateau d'If's great spoiling of the start line in July.  Here's a shot he took showing the production "tent."

It's true that they can be seen starting towards the car without their ticket. Maybe they were called back to get it and that part was edited out. Production usually doesn't help, but in this case there wouldn't be much point to letting them continue towards LAX.
(A bonus from examining the video: the only instance of starting-line hustle from Phil as he sprints towards the first elimination mat)

The mystery of the Green Room lives on  , Rob is going to interview them tomorrow and I'm going to ask him to ask.

Q. Gina, RealityWanted: What was your favorite place that you were able to visit?
A. Justin: The hotel in Cambodia was amazing.
A. Zev: I really liked the green room in Japan.
A. Justin: Yeah, we really didn’t see Tokyo at all and Vietnam… we had had our fill of it.  I wouldn’t recommend spending your Christmas vacation there.

thanks to Rob ! He asked Zev and Justin about the green room  :jam: :hearts:

The secret green room was a room they went to at the studio I think?   .. it was just a little room they went to when they first arrived in Japan, it had no windows, no furniture it was like a conference room, like a basement that they all slept in and the worst part was they didn't know when they were coming to get them and it was the worst nights sleep they had during the race.

Thanks, Puddin (and Rob). So the green room was just for sequestering. Which means...no hidden task, and teams were bussed to NHK the following morning.
