05/10 Amazing Race 14 - This is How You Lose a Million Dollars (Maui)

:barline

Beijing, China to Maui, Hawaii  (Nov 21)

Blog thanks to peach: (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17788.msg362033.html#msg362033)

Three airlines, twelve “customer service” representatives and multiple people yelling at each other in Mandarin later we found ourselves on an Air China flight back to Tokyo.  We’re still not sure why or what they were screaming but it seemed to be the norm for the airport.  That said, it was a lovely airport.
During this ordeal we couldn’t help but notice two groups of travelers flashing American passports being flanked by their own teams of cameramen looking a little too giddy to be at the airport in Beijing at 8am. Oddly enough, it seems that we found ourselves in the middle of  CBS’ “Amazing Race” with two teams on our flight.  Without giving too much away, I can assure you that all of the panic and suspense of the actual show comes from some really great editing.  On this particular day we found ourselves watching the double mint twins in matching sweatshirts, bleached teeth and badly dyed red hair preen the entire time for the cameras.
M had to remind me a few times that something are better thought than said aloud and that when calling people “twits” and such it’s best to do it at a volume they can’t hear you.
Forthunately the flight itself wasn’t bad as a nap and bag of M&Ms calmed me down considerable after being cut in front of by the camera crew multiple times had me rather annoyed.
Still we had quite a ways to go and even bumped into the host Phil Keoghan as he waited for his flight to film the finale in Hawaii.  It’s important to note that the running, fighting and begging for seats that you see on TV didn’t really happen and oh yeah, Phil flies business class.

As you all know, RFF first brought you the info about C/J on the flight from Beijing on towards Hawaii.

Here is the rest of the story.

While we have had this information since well before the show aired, I personally felt that it wouldn't be fair to the first teams that would be eliminated or to all the fans enjoying speculating on their favorites to release this info too soon. But after tonight we will have our final five, so I think it is finally okay to share this with you all.

===============================

I have been fortunate enough to be in contact with someone who came across the race in Beijing, on the way to Tokyo. Thanks to an enormous amount of time and help from her, I am able to bring you a good bit of info. This would be the connecting flight Beijing>Tokyo>Hawaii.

This description has been edited by me in order to combine a series of email exchanges  and in order to simplify the info, so any mistakes in the editing are mine. My inserts/edits have been italicized, the rest is in her words. Most of this comes in response to questions I posed.

We were flying on an Air China/ANA code share from Beijing to Tokyo on the 21st of November, flight later ID’d as CA925/NH5702 0930-1350.

All persons seen by her were confirmed by her matching photos.

At the terminal we discovered we had ended up on the same flight as the cheerleaders (Cara/Jaime) and the Mom/son (Margie/Luke). To the annoyance of the airline ground staff the film crew kept trying to jump ahead in line and was filming other passengers boarding the plane. I pray my exhausted scowl does not make national television. It would not be an attractive moment to have aired.

Once we got on the plane, one sound man in particular seemed keen on climbing over seats to make sure he was involved.

Aside from the camera crew cutting in various lines and being a touch rude, I don't honestly remember much else aside from the fact that the cheerleaders were glad another team was fighting and said as much to the Mom/son team. I will say I was surprised at how open the crew was about needing to get certain shots like "the waiting for the plane door to close shot."

Those two teams split in a different direction once we left the plane in Tokyo as we went for our (personal info removed) flight and they went to Hawaii (overheard them saying) and they went onward.

We then came across Phil at the JAL transfer desk in Tokyo. He was actually traveling with Tammy/Victor and BVM. insert: They were ahead of us in line.

I do recall Victor was very nice to the crew and was trying to get the crew members window seats to sleep by to their next destination...Honolulu. They did film them at the counter if I recall.

I'm not sure if they were staying there or not as none of them mentioned anything beyond that.

this group which included Phil, BVM (see below), and Tammy/Victor had NOT been seen by her on her flight.

Phil didn't really interact with anyone besides an older man who I would assume was a producer of some sort. Photo confirmation that this was Bertram Van Munster—insert: And it definitely was Bertram Van Munster that was with them, he and Phil didn't really interact with anyone but each other.

The crew and such traveling with Phil/BVM/Tammy/Victor were considerably nicer than the ones on her flight and were discussing how they had been celebrating someone's birthday a few days prior and someone had accidentally ruined the surprise cake by letting the secret slip.

Once past the transfer desk we had to go downstairs to the Bus station to transfer to another Terminal where we again came across Phil and Tammy/Victor. We rode the bus with them to the other terminal and then lost them in the chaos that is Narita airport.

I asked if she was able to get a feel for who might be in the lead at that point, or if these could be decoys:

To be honest, none of the groups really seemed to be too excited or racing, so it would be hard to say as neither group we saw really seemed all that "race like."

Finish Line confirmed: THE KAHILI GOLF COURSE more info here (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17788.msg380845.html#msg380845).

Unless it is the most elaborate decoy ever, it looks like the sisters are the next to go from this photo taken at the Maui airport.

Also, in the Maui News yesterday (4/27) this was embedded in an article.

Images of the fence have made their way onto the walls of art galleries, onto glossy pages of surfing magazines and calendars, and have been used as a backdrop for various television shows. Look for it in an upcoming edition of "Ripley's Believe It or Not!" book and a cameo appearance in the May 3 episode of CBS' "The Amazing Race."

I think they may have got the date wrong, but the Surfboard Fence looks like a cool place to put a clue box.  http://www.surfboardfence.com/

It will be a dramatic editing moment right before a commercial. And then the team that says it will go on to win. At least that's what I think.

Hopefully the quote isn't very early in the episode! :ascared

Yeah, whichever team says it will probably win it all.  I remember two teams saying the title quotes and they won -- Chip said the title quote of Season 5's finale, while Tyler or James said the one in Season 10's finale.  So if Cara or Jamie says it, we'll have our first all-female team win.  If Tammy or Victor says it, they'll win.  And I'm hoping neither Margie nor Luke says it, because that means they'll win.

First of all, didn't someone say TAR13's finale title?

Second of all, and what would be so bad about Margie & Luke winning it?

That said, that sounds more like a Tammy & Victor or a Jaime & Cara line.

Well, maybe it's not so bad as say, the Weaver Family winning in the Family Edition (which didn't happen), but it wouldn't be great either because Margie & Luke seem to have gotten the villainous edit, which isn't such a great thing if you're a team trying to win the Race.

I forgot who said Season 13's title.  I mentioned the ones from Season 5 and Season 10 because they were the ones I remembered.  And yeah, it doesn't really sound like a Margie & Luke quote to me.  It sounds most like a Cara & Jamie one, but it could be a Tammy & Victor one as well.

Belle Book

Belle Book

I think it was Nick and Starr...
Yep!

And that sounds like a Cara and Jamie quote to me.

I feel/think/SPECULATE Jaime says the quote as well...

I can imagine Jaime exploding to the Hawaiian taxi driver... screaming at him/her because of losing a million dollars...

If there's a water task again, I think/SPECULATE Tammy says this line...

Yeah, I could see Tammy or Victor saying it if one of them messes up at a task really badly.  Jaime could say it if a cab driver once again proves to be incompetent and starts to potentially mess things up for them (because I just don't see Cara ever losing it with a driver).

Either way, whoever says it, his or her team will probably win, since the past four seasons, minus All-Stars, have had a member of the winning team say the title of the season finale.

Congrats guys on spoiling this season so well. :D Looks like we have some finale to look forward to. Cara/Jaime FTW though.

Also, could there be some final task at the golf course? Maybe that's where the title is said. It'd be cool if they had a golf challenge, like, for Hole 1, shoot a golf ball with a pattern of the flag of Switzerland? Hole 2, a Germany golf-ball, etc. Just my two cents.

I also think there is a final task at the golf course. Will we see another backtracking challenge (TAR 13)? Observation (TAR 12)? Team Foundation (TAR 11) ? aND oh, the pitstop greeters are strange to me.

I also think that one of the winning team members is the author of the quote.  I hope the producers wouldn't be so mean if the title referred to a team that blew it.

Which reminds me, the ONLY time that my favorite team has ever won the race, the title of the last episode was

You've Just Made Me a Millionaire

Yup. Plus, for the past 10 seasons, the title often came from Phil (6, 7, 8, 9) or the winning team (5, 10, 12, 13), All-Stars being the sole exception.

Offtopic: The times my favorite won were: "Race To The Finish" & "They’re Slithering To The Finish Line Like The Rest Of Us!". The times my LEAST favorite won were: "Follow That Plane!", "It's Like Adam Building His First House!", "4 Continents, 24 Cities, 40,000 Miles", "25 Days, 50 Cities, And More Than 600 Consecutive Hours Together as a Family", "5 Continents, 9 Countries, More Than 59,000 Miles", "Say Your Deepest Prayers Ever!", "Low to the Ground, That's My Technique", "The Final Push", "You Look Like Peter Pan".
I suck at picking favorites.

And is there a surfboard/surfing task?

That would be a first. I've never actually known what they do when a team incurs a penalty at the final leg.

Raymond, that is an original idea and quite a good one. What better than using information about the AR14 route to test what knowledge racerspicked up along the way? I hope they did exactly what you propose.

Can you imagine? Let's say someone gets to the Finish Line kind of like how Wil & Tara and Chris & Alex did in TAR 2 and Chris & Alex used their personal effects to pay off the taxi cab driver, race to pass W/T, nip them by seconds, then Phil says, "Chris & Alex, you are the first team to arrive."

C/A: WHOO!!!!!! YES!!!!! ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!!!

Phil: However...

C/A: Zoiks!

Phil: You used your personal items to pay a taxi cab fare and as you know, that's against the rules of The Amazing Race. You have incurred a two hour penalty. Please step to the side.... Wil & Tara? After 39,000 miles.......

That would be devastating after all that racing to lose that way, but it would make for great television.

1. Jaime and Cara
2. Tammy and Victor
3. Margie and Luke

All for the first all-female win!

Ruth, you've got a slightly less than 1/3 chance of that happening. I say that because I rate Tammy/victor and Margie/Luke as stronger teams than Jaime/Cara (just look at their finish rankings for proof).

If you just base the expected final on previous finishes including the TBC, then the approximation of winning per team is: J/C 28%, M/L 35%, T/V 36%

However, if you look at only the last few legs, then the results are far more equal.  J/C have been placing better in each of the last few legs and "won" the TBC.  J/C have apparently been improving, even with the language issues.  Whereas T/V didn't "win" the TBC or the previous 2 legs even with the language and tourist advantages. However, it does look like T/V may smoke the Beijing leg.

With the equalizing that should occur with airport bunching, I think it is possible for any team to win.

T/V have been running good thru most of the game.

M/L have played hard and been very consistent.  If they can get past the K/J problem (which should go away since it is apparent that K/J are gone) and get down to business, they have an excellent chance.

J/C have been improving and in the Hawaii leg there should not be any language issues so hopefully Jaime can concentrate on the game. And if Jaime is not being the ugly American, maybe Cara can concentrate and take her game up a notch.

I know various people in this group do not like different team members.  However, everyone of the remaining players has worked hard and deserves a win.

Anyway, a really good final 3. I don't mind who wins, because i'll be rooting for all three.. but more towards Tammy and Victor winning.

I guess the final position would be -
1. Tammy and Victor
2. Margie and Luke
3. Jaime and Cara

For most part of the race, we've seen more of Margie and Luke and Tammy and Victor, with personal storylines given to them.. thus it has garnered many fans for them and would make many people sit on the edges of their seats to see who would win. But at the same time, Jaime and Cara is our only hope for an all-female team to win after 14 seasons, so they definitely have their own fanbase (RUTH, Raymond, LOL) and many people would be rooting for them as well. I will not be surprise that the finale manage to generate the highest rating for the whole season.

Wish i could watch it LIVE though. :'(

I do agree the girls started in the rather weak side (I blame my early elimination in Joab's game on that ) but  they're getting better, and also, losing the language barrier in Hawaii should significantly improve their odds, shouldn't it? ;) I guess the only thing we can be certain of is that the dream will remain alive until Sunday :(

After hearing Jaime say, "This is how you lose the race." in this clip for episode 11 by puddin:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh3dIPupndY&feature=channel_page

it's a 99.9% chance that Jaime says the title quote for this finale.

The only thing left to figure out is whether production has historically chosen
the final quote based on the winning team or on the best quote.

I guess the best way to know is for someone to re-watch the finales for seasons 2-5 and 10-13.  (That's not something that I could endure.)

I examined Wikipedia.  In Seasons 2-4, the final quote wasn't from the winning team -- it was from the runner-up one (Tara & Wil the Jerk, Teri & Ian and Kelly & Jon).  Seasons 5-13 (with the exception of All-Stars, where the final quote came from Charla & Mirna) either had the final quote come from Phil or from the winning team.  But the fact that the title quote hasn't always come from the winning team, I suspect that the quote is at least sometimes based on the best quote.

They were both at fault. I am a M/L fan but I can admit both teams are at fault. K/J shouldn't have laughed
whether or not it was at Luke and Margie should not have gone wild at the pitstop. Luke obviously wants
to prove he can do whatever an ordinary person can. We must all remember that he has a disability and even
though his brain functions perfectly, he is not aware of the world around him and only takes in using his eyes.
That said he needs to be a bit more respectful.

I agree they were both at fault.  Who can say if Kisha & Jen would have laughed at him while he was "speaking" if he could speak.  I could see them still  laughing if it was Victor and he was standing there arguing with them. I just found it interesting that Margie & Luke want the world to treat Luke equally, but it seems the first tme someone did in a negative light they started claiming foul.  They have to take the good with the bad I'm afraid.

lol, look at the cross necklace Jaime is wearing around her neck. Doesn't that make her a hypocritical person? Hehe... I think Cara should be the one wearing it, then maybe their luck might change a little with the cabbies.

Hope Tammy and Victor win the race!  :jumpy:

Final Roadblock is to find 12 surfboards from the pile of surfboards that has a picture of something from the location that they have been to and place them in the order they appeared on the race. A cheaper version of that as compared to Season 12??

Hmmm... Victor is the only one who looks happy in the taxi, but there is no way of knowing if that is the taxi to the finish line.

I guess they have to cut down on the cost.. TAR 12's final Roadblock seems too expensive to make again. But they could easily re-use it again? :funny:

I liked the TAR12 final puzzle because both team members had to do it. I don't like it when everything depends on just one person on the team. At least they are all there at the same time so it should be exciting.

Abby, I think you meant TAR 13, not TAR 12. And as long as there is some final Race-related task, I'm happy with it.

Which may mean that Victor is putting them up wrong.

I'm going to say that M/L win the race on the basis of the roadblock. Luke is such a student of the race that I think he'll have a huge advantage on a task like this.
Besides, I kinda like the idea of the bionic woman and the sinister deaf kid winning. Kinda like batman teaming up with joker.

Oops can't type numbers very well.   :-[  Yes, I meant TAR13.

I've changed my mind. At last Luke has to do something on his own; he can't let his Mommy do all the work. I also notice that he has a shirt on at the surfboards so the taxi pictures are probably before that.

As of now, the fence goes around approximately half of the Dettloffs’ property, aka Ka’ohu Farms, Pe'ahi. It is possible the fence will someday completely surround this semi-self-sufficient farm, which is a haven for animals, crops, and fun-loving, energetic people.

Lame is an understatement. And Little Havana was <3<3.

Anyways: I agree. It looks like the surfboard task is a Roadblock and it probably is our geography puzzle/flag/similar to this task. Is the pig thing a Detour or just an extra task?

I think this would be a neck and neck footrace...

the surfboards task (clearly the roadblock) maybe after finishing it will lead them on the finish line and it is shown that all teams are there at the same time....

the detour maybe is before the roadblock...

the finale is so exciting.... :hearts:

can't wait

Hey puddin, thanks so much for the vidcaps!!

After seeing these promo’s, for me, it couldn’t be more obvious. T/V neck-and-neck with M/L at the surf board finals…you can’t hide the million dollar smiles I’ve seen in the post-Race pics, so I’ll give the coin flip to Tammy and Victor! Sadly, a blow-out for Cara and Jaime, and all NOT in HD  :'(  But after seeing how close they were to not making F3 anyway, they can't be too heartbroken.

Jaime has a tramp stamp…who knew?! ;)

Well i have to say the title belongs to Cara and Jaime they finish the last task first and go for the finish line and end up with another lost taxi driver and this is where the title comes into picture my order of finish c/j;m/l and t/v(no more language advantage for them) i guess cara's good karmas are way more than jaime's bad one's that's why they made it to final 3 :umn: and probably also the reason why they will win it go cara go!!!

Two teams put their friendship first when they set aside the race and help each other finish a task. (Margie/Luke; Jamie/Cara)

One racer's constant nagging while searching for a clue causes their partner to lose their cool (Victor/Luke/Jaime nagging Tammy/Margie/Cara)

and in an unprecedented finale, the final three teams find themselves racing neck-and-neck in their last task on the road to the million dollar prize. (at the Roadblock?)

Oh crude, Jaime get's Karma for being mean to every local in the race...

Tammy and Victor and Margie and Luke seems to be head on...

Looks like we'll have an awesome finale! Shucks! It's the one episode I DONT GET TO WATCH until a day after... shucks!

I hope T/V wins, but whoever gets the million dollar prize, Congratulations to everyone who is in this race! I loved every minute, every second and every drop of it...

SPECULATIONS:

One team's rage against taxi drivers around the world comes back to haunt them. - Jaime and Cara

Two teams put their friendship first when they set aside the race and help each other finish a task. Margie and Luke and Tammy and Victor, poor Margie, she gets to haul a lot of heavy things throughout the race... from cheese, to rickshaws to pigs!

One racer's constant nagging while searching for a clue causes their partner to lose their cool: Victor and Tammy; Victor's a nagger

and in an unprecedented finale, the final three teams find themselves racing neck-and-neck in their last task on the road to the million dollar prize. RB/Final Task

Hey everyone, haven't posted here in too long!!  :'(
Anyways here is my SPECULATION based on the finale preview.

The detour comes first. (Luke takes his top off to ride the boat thingy)

Then comes the compulsory task of carrying the pig along the beach. (Luke already has his top off for this)

Then comes final roadblock / surfboard challenge. (M/L arrive first after over-taking the other couples at the pig-carrying challenge. T/V arrive soon after, followed by J/C)

I SPECULATE that T/V complete the roadblock first- the preview shows his rack of surfboards and he clearly has more than Luke does.

T/V get into their final cab (Victor's huge smile in preview) and win the race. Margie and Luke come in a close second.

Another thing that leads me to believe that T/V win the race... I saw a photo somewhere on here of C/J & T/V post-race with a caption describing T/V as the "gracious party hosts"... surely it makes sense that the winners of the race are the ones to host a party??

/SPECULATION

The running of teams on the beach reminds me of TARA3 finale.

I have to agree that TAR 14 reminds me of TARA3 all the time... China, India and Thailand (SPECIFICALLY: Bangkok and Phuket?!?!) Beach setting Finale?

It made me wanna watch TARA 3 again though.. but this has got to be one of the best seasons of TAR history.

I know TARA is good. But TARA can never be compared to TAR. TARA may be the most difficult race to run, but TAR is in its own league!

You're the one who built the charlaandmirna.com site, amirite? If not, sorry, but too bad it's gone now.  :'(

I've been to Honolulu Airport loads of times already but I'm not entirely sure if these pics are from that airport, but anyways, I'm gonna say yeah.

I guess not. It's Kahului Airport in Maui. Notice the light fixtures and the yellow stripe on the floor. I totally forgot that Gates 16-25 in Honolulu are in one area, so if they were in Honolulu, the sign would've read Gates 1 thru 25.

Probably at a terminal in Kahului airport.

I guess all teams had one flight to Maui. So most likely no Honolulu tasks?

I liked the TAR12 final puzzle because both team members had to do it. I don't like it when everything depends on just one person on the team. At least they are all there at the same time so it should be exciting.

Abby, I think you meant TAR 13, not TAR 12. And as long as there is some final Race-related task, I'm happy with it.

TAR 10's running around 10 blocks was lame huh? :funny: And TAR 7's Little Havana.. but i'm not complaining because it made Romber lose. :funny:

Joab, just to put more correct information into this thread, the AR10 Manhattan street run task for Tyler/James and Rob/Kimberly was from the News Building 220 E. 42nd St. (near corner of 3rd Avenue) and "the Alamo" sculpture at Astor Place near 9th St and west of 3rd Avenue. I calculate that at more than 33 blocks, which is approximately 2 miles in Manhattan.

It looks like one of the surfboards Victor has up are birds (look like parrots but might be comorants?).

And I definitely see a kiwi surfboard; maybe they're putting all of the places they been on the race (or recently) to confuse the teams?

 :yess: I am very excited.

TAR13 wasnt and 12 wasnt really HOPE IT IS VERY CLOSE!
Kiwi Jay, AR13 was 5 to 11 minutes. How very close do you want it? You'll probably never see 10 seconds like AR 2 again and even 2 minutes for AR3 and maybe AR6 is very difficult. All World Race Productions can do is put teams into a place for the decisive task in approximately the same time frame and let the teams' relative talents sort it out.

Its Kahului Airport in Maui. J/C and Tammy have ditched their bags. Victor's bad is a lot smaller. M/L have their full packs. They probably had to take a certain flight out of HNL to give Phil a little head start, and they had time to put on beach clothes and re-distribute belongings. Here is a pic of a concourse at Kahului Airport with matching carpet.

littlewop,
How long have you been watching The Amazing Race? How many times do you recall that there were definite spoilers on which team wins? I can remember the Linzes for AR8 and Eric/Danielle for AR11. CBS and World Race Productions take an incredible amount of effort to assure that the outcome of the finale will NOT be spoiled. They pick areas secluded enough so that they can control who gets access to the site. There is more to life than finale spoilers.

Here is a map of Maui below. The Kahili Golf Course is just northwest of the intersection of route 30 and 380 in central Maui.  That means it is at least 6 miles from the closest coastline on the southern shore in the Maaiaeo Bay area to reach Kapili Golf Course. Driving that should take about 10 minutes, but it is not long enough to change the order of finish from at the coast to the Finish Line.

Interesting how the producers are able to nudge everything so that the 3 final teams are at the final task (surf board arranging) at the same time.  It makes for much better TV.

Cab karma does not completely take Jamie & Cara out of the race for 1 million dollars.  I suspect Jamie says our episode title in the cab.

Wow, wow, wow, it's gonna be an EXCITING finale! Seldom do we see three teams at a final Roadblock task, it's usually down to two teams battling it out and the third team is lost somewhere. Now, it's really neck-and-neck! Gosh. No wonder it's one of Phil's favourite seasons.

AFTER 3 CONTINENTS, 9 COUNTRIES AND 40,000 MILES, THE FINAL THREE TEAMS WILL SQUARE OFF IN ONE FINAL LEG DURING THE SEASON FINALE OF "THE AMAZING RACE 14," MAY 10, ON CBS
"This is How You Lose a Million Dollars" (Maui) - Following a Race that spanned three continents, nine countries and 40,000 miles, Tammy and Victor, Cara and Jaime and Luke and Margie will square off in a grueling final leg that will test their endurance, their memory and one Racer's karma, during the season finale of THE AMAZING RACE 14, Sunday, May 10 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Phil Keoghan is host.

I will repeat this here. The surfboard task is at the Surfboard Fence Farm. Walkingpneumonia has it marked on his map. It is in the west side of the north coast, just off the Hana Highway. Here is the spoiler that identifies the location.

http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/517845.html

Plus, you can see the fence behind Margie, Tammy and Cara.

Here is my map, which is very similiar to Walkingpneumonia's. I am not as sure yet as to the locaton of the pig task (how topical is that....swine flu and all.......lol) or the jet ski route marker.

OK - I'm moving this over from the speculation thread... since somebody locked it :lock  :res:

The surfboard location thing is confirmed.
I tried to find a lu'au (pig roast) site in close proximity to jet ski's and black rocks and I came up with the area just northwest of Lahaina.
Jet ski island is where a few jet ski rental places work from - its moored offshore.
Black rocks is just off of the Hilton hotel - supposed to be good for snorkeling there - it looks like L/M go swimming...
The lu'au place seems to be pretty popular and the beach looks right. There is a pig cooking pit in the middle of the amphitheater.

I'll speculate that the Surfboards are somehow involved in the memory task, sort of like a localized version of the flag task from TAR 9.

Will we see the team that arrives at the memory challenge first wind up losing the race (again!)?

haha I love webcams Boingo! thanks for the link.
And I think the surfboard task goes without saying that it is indeed the final task/roadblock guys.

Phils blog fwiw:

Here’s my quick tease for the finale episode:

After 3 continents, 9 countries, and 40,000 miles, it all comes down to one final leg. The final three teams will square off in a leg that will test everything from their endurance, their memories, and even their sea legs. And one racer’s Karma may come back to haunt them. Two teams will put their friendship first when they set aside the Race and help each other finish a task, and the final three teams will find themselves racing neck-and-neck in their last task on the road to the million dollar prize.

Final-Three Team Breakdown:

Cara and Jaime: Fiercely tough competitors but you have to wonder if a local is going to lose their cool on them at some point with all the screaming. Having said that, they definitely have the strength to become the first all-female team to win the Race.

Victor and Tammy: Seem to be coming on strong now. They’re focused, determined, and they feed off of each other’s tunnel vision. Definitely a stronger team heading into the final leg than they were when we first started this race. I love when team’s relationships grow on the Race.

Luke and Margie: Communicate better than any team left in the Race, but do they have the strength to battle it out against two very strong teams.
Guess we'll have to wait and see next Sunday.

Two teams put their friendship first when they set aside the race and help each other finish a task.
One racer's constant nagging while searching for a clue causes their partner to lose their cool and in an unprecedented finale, the final three teams find themselves racing neck-and-neck in their last task on the road to the million dollar prize.

The team's rage against taxi drivers around the world which comes back to haunt them is obviously Cara & Jaime, maybe on the way to the finish line.
The two teams that put their friendship first is Cara & Jaime (again) and Margie & Luke.
And the one racer's constant nagging might well be Victor nagging Tammy.  Or it could be Luke nagging Margie, not really sure.
I could see Jaime saying the title quote if they leave the Roadblock first but find a bad taxi driver (again).  Tammy or Victor could say it as well, but I think it's more likely to be Jaime, meaning we have our first all-female winning team.

I'll speculate that the Surfboards are somehow involved in the memory task, sort of like a localized version of the flag task from TAR 9.

Will we see the team that arrives at the memory challenge first wind up losing the race (again!)?

Margie and Luke losing the race?  :funny: It seems they are first to arrive at the challenge.

For the two teams working together, could it be that Tammy and Victor finished the challenge first, and it stresses out Cara and Jaime and Margie and Luke, which they then decided to work together and complete it quick so that they don't lose even more time to Tammy and Victor since they are at a lose-lose situation anyway.

Or it could be Margie and Luke completing first, and C/J and T/V work together.. but i don't see that happening. And i also don't see Cara and Jaime completing it first.. so i thought the first scenario may actually be what will happen during the finale?? Just a guess.

You'll probably never see 10 seconds like AR 2 again and even 2 minutes for AR3 and maybe AR6 is very difficult.
How do you know? Are you on the production staff? Did BVM tell you this himself? Are you clairvoyant?
Ken, you are always the jokester! I needn't tell you that I predict the future as you already know this.

Didn't we see this a couple of episodes ago. M&L lost to T/V and T/V lost to J/K, which prompted T/V to U-turn J/K b/c they couldn't outrun them.

Although I could see M/L slowing up when they realized it wouldn't matter if they came in 2nd or 3rd.

Tammy and Victor only have to outrun Margie......Luke doesn't matter, just like Chris/Alex only had to out run Tara in TAR2. Tammy outran Margie down the mountain in Germany and T/V out ran her in Guilin. Also, Tammy outran Cara in Ruhpoldng and Novosibirsk too.

That's why I thought T/V, but I couldn't remember how big of lead they had on M/L.  I know it was at least a few seconds.  Looks like M/L & C/J owe T/V big time for the u-turn.  No doubt that the sisters would have beat all of them in a foot race.

Cara and Jaime - They probably won't win cos of karma. And I guess they'll have their usual problems with the cabs.

Tammy and Victor - After winning four legs, it'll be boring to many if they won I guess. And Phil did mention that this is one of his favourite seasons, which means that the winners should not be that predictable? Just a guess.

Margie and Luke - Somehow seems the most likely to win. Hmm.

I think that Jaime & Cara will finish 3rd. Not distant, but it'll be Margie & Luke or Tammy & Victor who will win. It may be Phil's favorite season, but (hopefully) that doesn't mean Margie & Luke win, although he clearly adores them (to the point that it's a little over-the-top). I'd rather see another team of dominant siblings win than them right now. Too much of putting disabled people on pedestals.

Depends on when they have it.  If Jaime gets her smackdown happens early in the finale (anytime in the first act or early in the second act), they still have a chance.  If it happens late in the finale (late in the second act or anytime after that), then they're toast from, indeed, karma.

i would not be surprise if tammy and victor will win this whole thing.. they have been very lucky on the recent legs because they speak the language of the country they visited. not to mention the leg where they fell second to the last, if only brad and victoria took the same flight, then they will be eliminated.

margie and luke are the most competitive team of this season, and they showed it early on the race when they u-turned kris and amanda which are surely big threats... if the last leg will be more of physical task, then a margie and luke win can be expected esp. if they are all neck-and-neck.if the surfboard task is before the one which required them to lift a pig in a bamboo stick.then they would likely win this. i will be ecstatic if they will cross the finish line first.

jamie and cara well i think their only hope of winning is if they really indeed the one who said the finale title, and if the tradition of the production to use quotes from the winners will continue.. a jamie and cara win i think will be very dramatic....as i see it.they are not the strongest and the smartest but they can be the luckiest, despite their taxi problem

either ways they will make history in the amazing race:

tammy and victor - first asian siblings to win

margie and luke - first mother and son team to win

jamie and care - first all female team to win...

goodluck to all of them... :jumpy:

Frankly, of all the remaining people the only one I like is Tammy - so go Tammy/Victor!

My prediction:
#1 Tammy/Victor. They get 30 seconds of airtime to tell what the Race meant to them.
#2 Margie/Luke. They get 10 minutes of airtime to give an inspirational speech about how deaf people can do anything... blah blah blah
#3 Jaimie/Cara. They blame it on a taxi driver, who apparently did not speak any English even though they were in Hawaii.

I was also wondering-do you guys think there is any significance of the TAR finale being on mother's day instead of Survivor's finale?

I didn't check this myself, but this is from OttoZilch @ TWOP:

"from left to right in the past seasons final mat shots:

TAR9 was 2nd, 1st, 3rd
TAR10 was 3rd, 1st, 2nd
TAR11 was 3rd, 2nd, 1st
TAR12 was 3rd, 1st, 2nd
TAR13 was 1st, 2nd, 3rd"

I found the photo for TAR13 - (http://image.wetpaint.com/image/1/jhx2xJz5KOG2ZKbXLlURBQ91609)
But I had problems trying to find the other three... I'll keep looking.

And here is for Season 12:
3rd, 1st, 2nd
(http://www.tvgasm.com/newsgasm/The%20Amazing%20Race%2012%20Cast.jpg)

So I'd say these are all correct:
TAR9 was 2nd, 1st, 3rd
TAR10 was 3rd, 1st, 2nd
TAR11 was 3rd, 2nd, 1st
TAR12 was 3rd, 1st, 2nd
TAR13 was 1st, 2nd, 3rd

In the last 5 seasons the people in the middle have either been 1st or 2nd.

if you look closely, Luke has a somewhat bitter expression, either they didn't win or he hates the idea of standing next to K/J

It doesn't really look bitter to me, maybe it is just one of those wanna-be-smiles...Or he just has weird mad faces.

You can either say that it is the same arrangement as last season (hence Margie & Luke winning), or you can take all past seasons into account and declare that nothing is certain.

I don't think this spoils anything. They have been getting more lazy with the way the teams are arranged. It used to be by placement but now it clearly isn't, at least for the eliminated teams.

So basically, to me it doesn't spoil anything. All three teams can still win! :jam:

If someone has all of the finale episodes, then they could just check the final moments before the credits to see how all of the teams line up historically.

They should be the same as the photos.

The race was getting more lazy to me, but it seems to be getting more organized now!  With season 14 not as micro.

Just for reference:

TAR 6: 3rd, Phil, 1st 2nd.
TAR 7: 3rd, 1st, Phil, 2nd.

In older seasons winners are in the middle. In newer ones it's harder to predict.

I think that Margie & Luke aren't the winners, although I could be wrong.  I think it's either Tammy & Victor or Cara & Jaime -- and either team winning would make me a happy camper, although I'd prefer a Cara & Jaime win slightly just because we haven't had an all-female team win yet and we've already had a brother & sister team win last year.

Chateau:

Is it possible to figure out what time the Girls/Siblings/Supermon & SDF are in the taxi, and on the jet ski's. If the pitstop picture is taken at 4:05. And that picture is at about 9 in the morning.

Well I think I could predict this by the pictures:
Carrying Pigs is 1st Task
Jet Skis is 2nd Task
Surfboards is last task.

You could also switch Carrying Pigs and Jet Skis.

Wait what if there is a Fast Foward after the Roadblock  :-[ :funny:

Thanks for the timing of the photo Chateau.

Because this photo takes place after all 3 teams cross the finish line, the time the photo was taken is irrelevant.  The teams could have finished at noon, done all of the production stuff and then assembled for the final group photo at 4 pm.

Or, Team #3 could have crossed the finish line @ 3:45 pm and then they took the picture.

Why no Phil?

Maybe as much significance as Victor signaling #1.
Jennifer (orange shirt) is also signaling #1. We know she did not win ;)

For relevance, I only did the times for that shot to give the upper bound on the time for all activities of the leg.  Since it is rather late in the day for an 8:30 am landing at the airport I think it shows that at least one team takes a long time to finish their tasks.  There are not a lot of good shots to pull times from in our previews.

Where is that surfboard place?  I might be able to do something with that.  And if it really is way over towards Hana then that could be why we have a 4 pm group shot at the mat.

And the pig carry task is definitely before the jet ski task.  They are basically carrying the pigs to where they will get the jet skis.

Chateau I was never all that convinced that the surfboards are in Hana either .. the only thing that might put them in or near Hana besides that are The Wailua Falls if that is it? or maybe someone just liked it for a scenery shot.

eta: most of the falls in Maui all look the same .. to me anyway and I can't get inside the surfboard place, it really can only be viewed from GE.

THE END IS HEAR
'AMAZING RACE' HOST ROOTS FOR DEAF KID

FAN favorites Margie and Luke Adams will be put to the test in the finale of "The Amazing Race," airing Sunday night.

Host Phil Keoghan admits he was pulling for the mother-and-son duo from Denver, Colorado, to walk away with the $1 million prize. Keoghan had them pegged as winners from the moment they auditioned for the show.

"They're one of the most popular teams we've ever had on the show," he says. "I don't claim to be an expert on teams, but I was so hoping that everyone felt the way I did about including a team that was so different."

Luke is deaf and he communicated with his mother by sign language; he also was a huge fan of the show even before he was old enough to apply to be on it.

Keoghan, who is completing a cross-country bike race to raise awareness and funds for Multiple Sclerosis, spoke of the strengths and weaknesses of the final three teams going into the finale.

MARGIE AND LUKE:
Strengths: "They are tenacious and great communicators with each other. Margie has been the most underestimated player from the beginning. She's a middle-aged woman who seemed not to be as tough as the younger racers. But she got better with the competition."

Weaknesses: "They are very sensitive and fired up. It's had an effect on their mindset."

VICTOR AND TAMMY:

Strengths: "They're very smart and focused. They're used to solving problems. Working things out, going through puzzles, making decisions."

Weaknesses: "They're not very practical. They've grown up with books and they have book smarts, but they don't have street smarts. Their balance of skills is skewed toward cognitive skills rather than practical skills. And we saw that when they had to use their hands to do things, like changing a tire or painting a fence."

CARA AND JAIME:

Strengths: "They are incredibly tenacious. They're not scared to push themselves out there; not scared to be pushy. She's like a bulldozer. When she gets focused, she's just full on."

Weaknesses: "They alienate people sometimes. When people are too pushy, it can be detrimental and people don't go out of the way to help you."

The pit stop for the finale is Maui and there will be island-style challenges, like surfing. "The team that won was absolutely deserving," Keoghan says. "Fair, solid, competitive, deserving."

Put.............Surfboard Farm, Maui, Hawaii and GE will zoom right in on it. It is NOT in Hana. It is just off the Hana Highway, before that road gets crazy.

So the pig task (and maybe the jet-ski task) would really tax Tammy & Victor.  In fact, I could see Tammy & Victor falling behind as a result of either task, only to rebound at the surfboard task and pass one team -- but not the other.  Or maybe pass both teams.

I still remembered Phil really like this season. And i believe for him to like this season so much, there must be a huge chance that Margie and Luke won.. But i still believe anyone can win this despite all the speculation?

And yes, Margie and Luke are not the "fan favourites".. all 3 of the final 3 had their equal share and proportion of fans!

I'm feeling there will be a huge first in the winner circle tomorrow night. It will one of the following:

1. Your first female winners of the US TAR (Zab and Joe Jer will always be considered the first all-female winners to me)
2. Your first hearing impaired winner of US TAR. (of course, Adrian was the first!)
3. Your first Asian winners of US TAR. (again, this has already been done in TAR Asia )

I am leaning towards #1.

    * Maui (Peahi Farms) - Roadblock (Who's ready to relive it?)
    * Maui (Kahili Golf Course)  Pit Stop (Finish Line)

This leg's Detour was a choice between Jets or Waves. In Jets, teams had to get on a (personal watercraft) and ride around the water in search of one of thirty buoys. Under four of them they would find attached a clue. In Waves, teams had to get into a wetsuit and swim out 40m from the shore and retrieve one of thirty 'Amazing Race' envelopes each. When back at shore they would open the envelopes, four of them would contain a clue. If they did not find a clue they would have to swim back and forth until they find one. The Roadblock required one team member to relive the race. They would have to arrange surfboards displaying the roadblocks and detours of each leg of the race in order of completion in order to receive their next clue.

Additional task:

* At Fleming Beach, teams had to carry a (Hawaiian Luau) suspended on a piece of bamboo along the beach and trade it for their next clue.

I just watched a video at Joker's that's on YouTube.  I have no idea how to post it here.  This is the name of it:

"The Amazing Race 14 - Surfboard Memory"

It's very revealing.  It's 3:43 and team is shown as in 1st place.  Team has 6 of the 11 and still no other team is there.  I do feel that something goes wrong as this team has only 5 more surfboards to complete task.

Went to CBS.com and the video is posted there as a newest video.  It's a featured video.

CI have a sick feeling about that too. The whole season long edit of those girls wanting to come in first and finally getting it at the last possible moment.

 :barf
The better analogy would be with Eric/Danielle, who never never won any legs of AR11 until the finale.

We know that Luke can get frustrated fairly easily.  Maybe he does really well at the start as shown by the promo, but gets stuck finding the last one or two.

I'm back just in time for tonight's finale.  From the previews I have seen including the long one detailing Luke's surfboard oddessy, and the tease from the end of last week, it looks like although Luke is ahead, all of the teams are together for the final roadblock.  So perhaps Luke screws up and the others catchup and even pass him.  Will know all tonight.

Seems that CBS is really giving a lot away of what happens in the finale.

Have fun everyone.

Yeah, I think the other teams aren't as far behind as the video may imply.  First Cara & Jaime and then Tammy & Victor catch up at the Roadblock and then they pass both Margie & Luke because Luke gets stuck after the first six boards -- or at least one of them does so, most likely Cara & Jaime.

Welcome Home G-Man......

And happy TAR day to all.

If Margie & Luke do lose (remember CBS has spoiled the race before in their promos).  Remember season 10, you so didn't need the shadows on Bama's Boobs (Chateaux) to tell you who wont he race and what order they arrived in.

And if If Margie & Luke do lose (it will be like Ron & Christina), I really wouldn't use Eric & Jeremy for a true comparison.

It appears that this leg (like the last two season, thank you so much CBS in this you have truly corrected the single biggest race flaw, now get to the rest).  Eric & Jeremy had built up a over a 30 minute lead) and had that lead disappear (thanks to mid leg flights, specifically designed to bunch al three team).  If the race didn't have mid leg bunching they would have easily won (by a significant amount of time).

In Ron & Christina's case all the  teams started in a tie (which is standard for the race legs) and they lead the whole race, but based solely off of their performance at the roadblock they lost.  It wasn't due to the producers bunching teams mid leg for their lead to disappear.  It was completely in their control.

I am curious how often that mid leg bunching (when most tasks are complete) has cost teams the win.

From Wikipedia:

Leg 11 (People's Republic of China → United States)

    * Flight: Beijing, People's Republic of China (Beijing Capital International Airport) to Maui, Hawaii (Kahului Airport)
    * Maui (Ma'alaea Bay) -  Detour (Jet or Dive)
    * Maui (Fleming Beach)

Also if you look at the most recent final legs, they have more destinations listed than that. In TAR 13 there was only one task that was a Detour/Roadblock and the rest was finding all these different locations.

So at the very least, by the time the other teams catch up, M/L have 6 of the 11 surfboards done. I've read other things here, longtime lurker, first time poster, and some say that L messes up somehow but he'd have to REALLY mess up to let the others catch up.

I'm happy with whoever wins, I like all three teams left.

I've had a feeling that Cara/Jamie would win ever since we first found out they were in the final 3.   I always expected them to have a little bit of a edit saying they could be the first all female team to win the race much like they did with Dustin/Kandice in their seasons.  What I recall from their seasons was how much they advertised through the editing that D/K could be the first all female team to win.  It seemed like at every pit stop or confessional it was mentioned.  But with Cara/Jamie, the only time it was mentioned that i can recall was in the  last episode and it might have been in the first episode (though not sure on that).  It just had me wondering if they took the opposite approach with C/J than they did with D/K.  Though one can say that D/K were stronger racers hence the edit and C/J have been more lucky racers than strong.   Therefore if C/J win, I wouldn't be surprised.  I'd be happy for them.  The all female racer curse would finally be broken.

I never expected Margie/Luke to be in the finals so was surprised when the spoiler came out that they were.  I'd be happy with them winning just for the fact that it would be a first for a parent/sibling team to win.  I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for that to happen for years.     I think they'd be deserving as they were strong racers and always pulled through.

As for Tammy/Victor, they have been the dominate racers.  I wouldn't be surprised with a win by them either.  So I wouldn't put it past them to pull out a win.  I'd be happy with them winning as well.

Overall, I like all 3 teams.   I've been satisfied with the race this season.

Luke set out on this race to show America that deaf people can do anything just as well as hearing people can. And while I respect and applaud him for that, he failed. Margie did all the hard work while, in a way, he sat on the sidelines and watched. For a team to be considered deserving of winning the money, they have to be just that: a team. Which is why tonight, if it isn't Cara & Jamie that cross the finish line first, I'll settle with Tammy & Victor only.

It's been an interesting season. The casting in this was eally good. They managed to find people who arn't your run-of-the-mill couples. As this chapter comes to a close, I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Luke could also be the one that helps out another team, thus letting the other teams catch up.  When I read 2 teams teaming up, the only 2 I could picture was C/J and M/L.  Both of those teams have felt that Victor has burned them in the past, so why would either team up with him?  And I don't see Victor helping out another team either at the expense of himself and Tammy.

He danced when he couldn't hear the music, he swam laps only what, at one point a minute behind Michael Phelps' time, Luke didn't just sit by and let Margie carry him, he did just as much as she did. They were definitely a team and honestly, take a little offense to your assertation that he failed in saying he didn't prove that a deaf person could do just as much as a hearing person can. The only difference is auditory (sp?) ability and to assertain that he's defective in some way, well, that's not right. If that's not what you meant I apologize but again, I maintain that they were a team.

Maybe by posting this theyre trying to lead people away from thinking M/L are going to win but they do actually win.  Now its starting to confuse me.

I don't think Luke's expression in the group photo is very indicative of a million dollar winner.  I think it's between C/J and T/V.  Only a few more hours 'til we know!
Every picture tells a story don't it?

1. Tammy and Victor
2. Jamie and Cara
3. Margie and Luke

*sigh* would've loved for M/L to pull this one off, it just sucks that they were so far ahead and obviously screw up really badly!

While its true that Luke didn't do any driving and literally most of the communication with strangers, locals, and the service industry was from Margie.  He certainly did his share of the tasks. and he certainly wasn't dead weight being drug around (more the point he s the one shown consistently dragging his mother around.

We have certainly scene teams were racers did less without a viable reason why they couldn't do it.

Congratulations to Tammy & Victor!  I wanted either them or Cara & Jaime to win.  I guess I wanted Cara & Jaime just a little more because we already had a sibling team win last season, but this is an Asian American sibling team, and I always had a soft spot for Asian Americans, so I'm just as glad this team won.

It all came down to two things:  Cara & Jaime's taxi needing gas (and being lost) and Luke missing the final two surfboards at the end.  That's what got Tammy & Victor the win.

Exciting finale, marred only a bit by the expected winners.

I don't think I could've done that Roadblock.  The fake clues being thrown in would've thrown me off, big-time.

Tammy & Victor: Well done, you two.  Congrats on becoming the first Asian team to win the race.  But you really lucked out with a cerebral task at the end.  Still, Victor had a great strategy for completing it, so good job to him.  But I'm really only happy with them winning for Tammy.  What a sweetheart.  True class act the whole season through (Romania notwithstanding).

Jaime & Cara: Well, Jaime was forced to eat some humble pie, but at least she was fully humbled by finally APOLOGIZING, for once.  I'm really surprised they managed to nearly catch up at that final Roadblock.  Good job on them for tying Dustin & Kandice's record for highest-placing women's team and finishing second.  This is actually the top two I predicted before the season even began, in either order, at that.  So I'm ecstatic that it turned out that way.  Still, the search for the first winning women's team continues for yet another season. . . .

Margie & Luke: Luke, Luke, Luke.  You and Margie had the final victory right at your fingertips.  But instead of staying perfectly calm when you got frustrated at the final Roadblock, you panicked and blew it.  I'm really surprised Margie didn't do the task instead of you.  It might've helped you both win.  Still, good run by both of you, and I'll give you the congratulations that Poo won't give you for getting as far as you did.

Well, it was a great season.  Better than the last one, at least.  I hope next season's good, too!

Shoreline Access 118 (chart link at the bottom of this page (http://www.co.maui.hi.us/index.asp?nid=865)) is listed as "keokea beach homesteads," which puts it somewhere in the Kihei area, not far from McGregor point.

Reruns of The Simpsons?

BTW, I think I figured it out:

There's this pattern in all F3's excluding FE. Alpha males beat Fighting Couples/Ex-couples who beat Siblings who beat Loving Couples (Married or Dating) who beat Feisty F/F who beat Parent/Child who beat Friends/Other Relationship. The only exception would be David & Jeff, due to their flight connection.

yes, the pig task was a detour (clearly seen from Jaime's hand)... but since all teams chose to do the pig task, they just showed it as a additional task.

For those who probably already knew this but choose to omit this fact, is that

1) Deaf person (Adrian) has won amazing race asia in season 2
2) An all girl team has already won amazing race asia in season 1

So Luke and Marge and Jamie and Cara didn't win.

Don't make a difference to me. And even if they did, they are not going to make any special precedence doing so either. :yess:

I am just happy finally a pair of Chinese Americans have won the race.  :yess:

WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Greatest season, greatest finale EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tammy and Victor - The moment they ran into the golf couse, I was just ECSTATIC. Gosh, I really did not expect them to win. Prior to this episode, that is. I really saw them finishing in fourth or second, like most competitive teams do. What's more, my favourite teams almost always finish in second or fourth. Victor was awesome at the Roadblock! Luke was so far ahead I thought no one could catch up, then Victor comes with the brains and overtakes him. I'm usually pissed cos my favourite team would arrive at the RB first, then lose to another team. But this time, it was the other way round. I can't believe my favourite team won, it's been six seasons since it happened. This is way cool. Just love how their relationship has grown over the legs, from their big quarrel in Romania to Victor encouraging his sister all the time now. LOVE THIS TEAM! They deserved it, AND I LOVE THE ENDING!!!!

Cara and Jaime - Prior to the season, I expected them to win. But as the legs progressed, I thought they were doomed to third place. Didn't expect them to finish second as well. (This season's really unpredictable, the edit was never obvious). I felt rather bad for Cara during the pig task when Jaime was pushing her so. I really like this team too, love Cara for being ever so nice and tolerant. She was so supportive of Jaime doing the RB, I was pretty moved by that. And I'm proud of them for making up so much time at the RB! Really happy for them, they did so great. Oh, and I thought it was class act that Jaime stayed to help Luke. Perhaps she wouldn't have done it if she were in first, but I still think that staying behind was really commendable. I mean, in a race, every second counts! Love these girls!

Margie and Luke - Never really expected them to make the final three initially and when they did, I kind of thought they'd win. Also, Luke was soooooo far ahead and he was doing really well, didn't expect anyone to catch up. It was a pity that he couldn't get the last two. But it was sweet to see them and Cara and Jaime work together. It's a great friendship on this race. =) And while I didn't like them too much in the last few legs, I think they're a great team, definitely an inspiration to others. That scene at the finish line was so sweet, Luke thanking his mum and all. Aww. Having said that, anyone with me that they'll be back if there's another season of All-Stars?

Once again, I have to say that this is the best season ever! Season 12 was awesome all the way till Ronald and Christina lost the RB and finished second. Season 8 saw my favourite team win, but I didn't really like the season on a whole cos it was pretty boring. This time, not only was the whole season great, the three teams in the finale were great, the final four were great, the tasks were great, the whole season was so unpredictable, no really obvious edit, all in all, AWESOMEST SEASON EVER!

YAY FOR TAMMY AND VICTOR AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D

Really sad that this season's over, now I've got nothing to look forward to on Mondays. Let's all hope that TAR 15 will be as wonderful, if not better!

[Some stuff for the flight people
.. Tammy and Vic not on the same flight? even though editing made it seem so
puddin, there is no way to tell for sure given the paucity of flight-related infomration telecast. I agree that they may not have been on the same flight from Beijing to Tokyo. The reasonable choices(from the Timelines thread) were:
PEK to NRT:
JL780 0825 1255
NH956 0830 1300
NW30 0900 1340
CA925 0925 1355

It appears that Tammy/Victor used their 2 hours earlier arrival at Beijing airport (or a travel agency, as we don't know whether or not they used one) to get the first possible flights for both PEK NRT and NRT HNL. It's their advantage for being in first place. Now, that advantage is meaningless on the PEK NRT leg. Assume that Magie/Luke and Jaime/Cara were on CA925. It hardly matters. What does matter is which flight they got NRT to HNL. The first two flights are JO(which is JALWays) 76 and JO8090. JO76 departed at 645pm and JO8090 at 715pm, but JO8090 must have been a faster plane and arrived at HNL 12 minutes ahead of JO76. Now that again matters little if all 3 teams get on HA 176 HNL OGG, which I believe they did (but can't prove it without asking specific questions of the teams , which is likely to happen).

Nah... I totally had that figured out too :)  I watched as there were slight edits but the top three were there all along...!
It's just like her bootlist from all-stars!  The final three was supposedly not known, but the order they were in was still right if I remember.
 (Correct me if I am wrong)
Snooky101, yes, you are wrong. puddin's AR11 bootlist went all the way to Eric/Danielle finishing #1.

I guessed it was like that, that just maybe she knew!  But I wasn't completely convinced until I watched.

I suspected that puddin did that on purpose. After about Leg 5 or 6 she moved Tammy & Victor from being in about 4th place to being at the end. I was always wondering why she did that even when it said there was no evidence beyond Leg 7.

She also moved some other teams around too. She didn't have it in the right order back at the beginning.

Phil Keoghan blogs 'The Amazing Race' finale: episode 12
May 11, 2009, 02:58 PM | by Phil Keoghan

Another season in the can. I think season 14 was definitely one of the best we've ever done. Ranks right up there with some of my other personal favorites - seasons 1, 3, 5, and 7 to name a few. We had an extraordinary final three heading into Sunday night. We had a feisty all-female team in Cara and Jaime and who had what it took to potentially claim the first victory for the women; we had the Team that you may call this season's “underdogs;” and lastly Tammy and Victor, who may just have a bit more practical skills than I ever gave them credit for.

I was at the finale party in NY last night and Victor actually called my bluff and wanted to challenge me to a tire changing contest. However, he did admit that they struggled driving a stick shift and that he had bruises all over his legs from being a bit uncoordinated – if you think back, the propeller Roadblock wasn’t exactly a whirling success.

In addition to the season 14 cast, we also had some past familiar faces at the party last night including former Racers Tom and Terry, Sarah and Terence, Kelly and Christy, Nate and Jennifer, and even Drew from Season 1 showed up. Really fantastic to see all those guys coming out to show their support for this group of globe trotters.

Seeing as this is my last blog entry for this season, I thought I would review some of my favorite moments from Season 14:

·    Cannonball Cheese Wheels: If you ever hear the line "Watch out for the cheese," you know you have a great season on your hands.

·    Big Brother Doesn't Always Know Best: While in Romania, Victor insisted they were going in the right direction. He was wrong. Turned out to be a game changer for the winners as Victor learned it’s a Team sport and not a dictatorship.

·    Mat Meltdown:  Who was to blame? Even several weeks following the infamous meltdown, we're still debating who was in the wrong.

·    Most expensive potty break ever: Kisha and Jen work so hard as a team to battle back through a challenging leg and with a spot in the final three on the line, Jen makes a quick bathroom Pitstop.

·    Last night’s Roadblock: Love the moment when all three teams are running neck-and-neck. Great finale episode last night.

As I’ve stated before, I really love when teams' relationships grow on the Race and I honestly feel like Tammy and Victor's matured right in front of us. They learned to feed off of each other, communicate with one another, and most importantly listen to each other. And I believe they’re probably walking away from the Race with a better relationship than when we started.  I have a lot of respect for those guys.

As far as their strength in the game, they were like the NY Giants two season’s ago…they got hot down the stretch and everything started clicking for them. They ran one heck of a race in the final couple of legs. Don't get me wrong, we knew they were a strong team when we first saw them, but I think most of us thought their relationship may trip them up along the way.

Luke and Margie were definitely one of my favorite Teams we've ever had on the show. Their relationship is truly compelling and whether or not they were your favorites, you have to give both of them a ton of credit. Not sure they were on anyone's final three lists at the start of the season. Margie – or as I call her, “Bionic Woman” – is as competitive and strong willed a human being as I've ever been around. And Luke, who was probably the biggest Race fan ever, never let any obstacle get in his way and clearly never will.

Cara and Jaime definitely played a strong game. When we first saw this team we knew they were strong enough physically and mentally to make a serious run at the million dollars. They were also relentless in their pursuit of becoming the first all-female team to win the Race but came up just a bit short. I’m sure Cara was a great cheerleader on the field, but she is definitely an all-star off the field. She always maintained her cool throughout a very hectic race and was always supportive of her friend and teammate.

Just want to say thanks to everyone for tuning in this season and for coming out to support me on my Ride Across America. It’s been a crazy couple of months. I am going home now (via airplane) in a much wider and more comfortable seat to gear up for season 15.

True, I did admit that I did not know from the beginning and like I said .. one can never be sure until the fat lady sings. Honestly I prefer trying to figure locations and tasks rather who goes when but now CBS has decided to spoil the route so whats the fun in that? Remember the good ole days when we had to figure out where they went next simply by identifying a license plate or airline as well as the intro flash screen caps  :umn: :'(

V: I actually wish they had aired a little bit more of the near disasters or the near fiascos that ended up working out.  There were so many strangers who helped us out that unfortunately people will never see. Even in that final leg, the travel agent accidentally gave us first class tickets.

T: We almost went the way of Azaria and Hendekea in the final leg.

V: We almost freaked out and in Tokyo, these great people from Hawaii in fact, basically said "You know what?  Let us give you our credit card and make long distance calls as long as you want to sort this out."

T: And they gave us money to eat and the kindness of strangers we experienced during this race was incredible.

V: Even in the Beijing airport we ran into this random person who let us use their cell phone to make international calls and we found this person sleeping on the floor who basically pulled out his wallet and gave us the little bit of money that he had.  We were able to survive all of those things, but to me it's amazing how strangers were willing to help other strangers.

This is from the BuddyTV interview.

Has anyone checked with Tammy & Victor about the first class tickets?  There could have been a whole different outcome.  There was the spoiler with T/V in same Tokyo airport as M/L & J/C but didn't seem to be on the same plane and appeared to be with Phil & BVM and production.  Were the wrong tickets for Tokyo to Hawaii?  Or did they actually use them to get to Tokyo? If so then it seems there would have been a penalty.

It sounds like they sorted it out in Tokyo, so it must have been on the Hawaii leg that they had first class tickets.  This is probably why they were in the same area as Phil and BVM, because they had to get the tickets changed.

The reasonable choices(from the Timelines thread) were:
PEK to NRT:
JL780 0825 1255
NH956 0830 1300
NW30 0900 1340
CA925 0925 1355

apskip,

My research says that NW30, PEK-NRT was canceled on Nov 21. I also find a PK852 on Nov 21, PEK-NRT at 08:35-12:50. The spoiler was definitely on CA925 and saw Phil, BVM and T/V at the transfer desk in Terminal T-1-S. So that would rule out the JL780 and PK852 flights, since they both were at NRT Terminal T-2, and the spoiler would not have seen them in T-1-S. If NW30 PEK-NRT was in fact canceled, then the only flight that Phil,BVM, and T/V could have been on was NH956.

Dr. Rox,
The ticket machine that Tammy/Victor got tickets from was JAL. Why not JL780? It was the most logical (first) one anyway. Just because it wasn't in the same terminal does not mean they weren't eventually on it; it just makes it not probable.

makz3d, I totally agree with chill_sd on this. They bought an alternate ticket in Tokyo. The leg originally with first-class tickets had to be Tokyo to Honolulu. With 3 flights between 8am and 9am just on Hawaiian Airlines, there would be no reason to have first-class tickets from Honolulu to Kahului airport(Maui) because tickets are so inexpensive ($38 much of the time coach, $159 almost always first-class).

How devilish and fiendish of T/V. They fly from Beijing to Narita T-2 on JL780. Take the inter-terminal shuttle back to T-1-S to be seen at the transfer desk with Phil and BVM by the spoiler. Then re-trace the shuttle back to T-2 to fly to Hawaii. I think you are on to something there!!!!!

Yeah, I heard someone say Kihei on the show and I knew my Kaanapali claim was sunk.  So the land form that I was so sure was Molokai was actually just more of Maui   :groan:

For the life of me, I couldn't tell if that "view" was from the Kanapali area looking toward Moliki or from the Kihei area looking at the West Maui Mountains, which are a remnants of another volcano. I think it was called Iao Volcano. It was a collapsed caldera. I kept twisting GE around trying to match it and just never found it. I tended to think it was Kihei area........but for the dumbest reasons.....lol.

All the elimination station teams were at a hotel farther down the coast in Kihei area. I thought the pig luau would make a great wrap party after the race was over.....sort of kill two birds with one stone. I actually asked Steve this same question at TARcon and he laughed and said that would have been great, but not luau wrap party for them.

The first task, the luau, was in the Kihei area. That means that there is a mountain view north, east and south  except for west to the ocean.

And it changes the time estimate a lot.  I got 9 am if it was Kaanapali.  But for Kihei the time estimate would be a much later.  I will give it a try later on.  It would help to get consensus on the exact location of Beach Access 118 though.  A later time at the beach will explain why the finish was late in the day.

And this would add some time too:  Seattle PI interview (http://www.seattlepi.com/tvguide/406103_tvgif11.html)

When the driver took J/C to the false fence, it was actually the Hawaiian Island Surf & Sport at 415 Dairy in Kahului (compare the cap the photo here (http://www.hawaiianisland.com/shop_images/shop1.jpg)). And when he stopped for gas, it was at the Shell in Old Paia (compare the cap to the Quinsaat building (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/20350036)). So he generally went the right path, just...not very fast.

Dr. Rox,

I really appreciate your pins in the Maui map. However, I disagree on the placement of the Surfboard Fence pin. It is too close to Hana. It needs to be much farther left and quite close to Kahului airport based on other maps I have seen.

apskip,

I don't give a rat's anatomy whether you agree or disagree with my pin placement. Rather, apskip, why don't you post your so-called "maps" and we will discuss the veracity of your information. If you don't post your data, then your post is just typical message board stalking BS. I learned a long time back not to pay much attention to anything you say after you sent me that FIRST rude and stupid PM. Your inability to not realize that puddin made that post showed me that you do not pay enough attention. I bet you didn't send her the same PM you sent me, did you? Now, when you send me a PM, I just delete it, without reading them.

But your constant disagreeing with me has become so comical, I just can't help but laugh every time you choose to post after me. I am actually flattered that you spend so much time and energy to disagree with me.
Title: Re: TAR14 Finale: 'This is How You Lose a Million Dollars'
Post by: apskip on May 14, 2009, 12:32:09 PM
Well, Dr. Rox I accept your challenge. To me the message is what matters. If you want to make it the messenger, so be it.

So here is the correct placement of the pin for the surfboard fence at Kaohu Farms, Peahi, Haiku. If you don't think that's the correct location, then look at the episode again since it is clearly specified there. Here is the map for that area:

Map of Haiku with A on Surfboard Fence Location (http://www.eastmaui.com/haiku-maui-map.html)

Of course it is the lower of the two maps which provides the Haiku area map. Your location is much further east down the Hana Road. Mine is pretty much directly below the rounded point on that coast of Maui where the Hana Highway essentially bends to go south.

If you watched in the episode live (since you were at the same place I was you may not have been able to well) then you may remem ber Jaime, Cara and the taxi driver reaching the sign that said Hana 35 (arrow pointing straight) and Haiku 3 (arrow pointing right). I believe they turned right there, which is why that sign was shown.

For anyone wondering what is at the site I have referenced above, here it is:

So here is the correct placement of the pin for the surfboard fence at Kaohu Farms, Peahi, Haiku. If you don't think that's the correct location, then look at the episode again since it is clearly specified there.
So the surfboard fence was in an irrigation ditch?

Haiku? Irrigation ditch? I feel inspired...

The gleeful surf board
As in irrigation ditch sits
Does wait, what for deafness?

I hope they visit Limerick in TAR 15  :funny:

Looks to me that your placement of the surfboard fence is in the middle of a drainage/irrigation ditch in the middle of a pineapple field. If you zoom in on that map and switch to the satelite view, this is what you get:

This has got to be one of those instances where you don't need a footrace (TAR2) to have an exciting finale. From the pig task placement to the Roadblock, the teams placement continuously changed.. from T/V in first, to second, then to last, then back to second, then to first.. it was exciting and seriously unpredictable.. until the very end where Victor finally got the clue.. then we know he really got it. It was one hell of a finale.

The final 3 teams, though my support goes to T/V.. i would have been happy with anyone winning. The first asian, the first all-female or the first parent-child team.. it doesn't matter.. i really love this final 3 because like i've said before.. the final 3 in previous seasons often had one team being overshadowed and leftout with the focus on the other 2.. but for this season, all three teams in the final 3 had an equal share of their own storyline and this makes the race so much more interesting, because we already followed them through the race and it was exciting to have so many fans root after the three respective teams.

Yay to T/V, they seriously deserved it. And wow, J/C actually did better than i expected and came in second.. and M/L.. could have won if Luke kept his cool. I was pretty surprised that he actually couldn't remember the scorpion task.. because it was probably just a few days before that their team did the task and it was quite shocking that he didn't get it.

Love everything about TAR 14.. one of the best seasons ever definitely! And must i say.. my winner curse has finally been broken ever since SEASON 7 where Uchenna and Joyce won.. and after 7 seasons.. finally another of my favourite team.. and for the first time ever.. a pre-season favourite of mine that i rooted for from the start to the end of the race won! Yay!

And now.. it's time for me to go back into mourning as there's no more TAR.. for about another half a year to one year. SIGH. :(

Well, for me I can say that again, for the second season in a row, I picked the winning team (even if I didn't like those teams)!

I'm trying to be an optimist about the result, but it was still an amazing finale!

They probably had to find the Kamehameha statue at the Grand Wailea, this would lead them to the Kamehameha Golf Club.
That's a good guess, considering the name of the golf course and the clue thingy they were given after the surfboard puzzle. With any luck, a racer might confirm for us soon. (photo (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/8061783)).

Good job slowhatch. If they went to that particular statue, then they went to the hotel where the Elimination Station teams were staying too. Puddin figured that out.

If the racers had to find a statue after the Surfboard roadblock, I'd be very surprised if it was the Kamehameha statue at the Grand Wailea.  According to MapQuest it's a 52 minute drive from the Surfboard fence to the statue.  Then, they would have to go back north to the finish line.  I just can't see them driving around that much at the end.

If the interview is correct, then I would suspect that the statue was located between the Roadblock fence and the finish line.

But most importantly, a big time thanks to Dr. Rox for the maps posted back on May 12.  They added a great additional perspective to the leg for me.

Thanks Pedaler.

My pin placement is about 100-200m off. slowhatch and Chateau got the exact farm. You can zoom into that farm and twist GE around and actually see the fence when it was in its infancy. That particular sat photo is pretty old.

I feel the same way as you do about the statue. It is a long way down there and then back to the golf course finish line. If that was the case, I think we would have seen teams meeting and passing by each other, like we did in the jet skis, for instance. Like you, I think it might be some other statue in town near the airport. I do like the same name aspect too. I have done searches in google and in the picture sites for other statues on Maui, without any luck though.

I still would have liked to see some bicycle riding down Haleakala, maybe next Hawaii stop!!!!

I just want to confirm it that we did have to look for the statue after the surfboard challenge. It wasn't too far away from the roadblock. Maybe 10 minutes away from surfboard fence shop then other 20-25 minutes to the golf course. I can't remember the name of statue, tho.

Thanks DeafRacer,

That fits what I was thinking. Ten minutes from Surfboard Fence to statue sounds like in the Paia area, then on to the Finish Line. Again, thanks!!!
