• Exciting news- on my domestic flight going Bangkok- Phuket, the Amazing Race contestents caught the same flight. And as I expected it's all a shame. Camera crews set up and take multiple shots of them running to the ticket counter, and then they got off the plane and ran down the stairs, only to get held up by customs. Stupid f'cking Americans.
Ahh they were wankers. They yelled at the Air stewardess because their large cameras didn't fit in the overhead lockers, they walked around the plane the whole flight to be sure no one was filming them and they were the biggest bunch of knobs.
But hey what do you really expect from American reality shows??

follow up (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17788.200.html) thanks to peach:
And I must admit it wasnt so much the contestants who were jerks, more the production crew. I spoke to one of the contestants, an asian looking man with his girlfriend.  confirmed as Victor & Tammy
Nice guy.
Also two older men.  confirmed as Mel & Mike
The camera guys and production bothered me though, they seemed very pretentious, roaming around the plane like they owned it. As an Australian I do not appreciate this, as i believe everyone is the same, regardless of their fame, wealth, etc.
They all had a picture of a monkey and were looking for that.
our flight details were:
15/nov
Bangkok- phuket
thai airways
flight TG203- 0730
Sorry no pictures the camera crew acted like body guards.
Yes they did do multiple takes, one funny incedent was when we arrived all the teams ran, just to be held up by crowds and customs..that made me laugh.
hope this helps,

Another Blog/News posted on Nov 15 (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17788.msg361317.html#msg361317)

• Two contestants in a TV production being filmed by foreigners in Phuket are on the verge of collapse after taking turns pulling each other around Phuket City as they raced against the clock in the midday heat.
PHUKET: At least four pairs of contestants taking part in a travel documentary are racing around Phuket using various forms of transport today.
One of the challenges that faced the contestants was to pull each other through Phuket City in the midday heat using rickshaws as they searched for “King Rama V Park”.
The contestants pictured here made “four wrong turns” and held up traffic while a camera man and a sound engineer followed them in a songtaew (wooden bus with benches). A policeman on a motorcycle also followed the contestants and crew to “ensure their safety”. The policeman told the reporter that even though he could easily have told them how to get to the park, he had been ordered not to give directions to the contestants.
The reporter caught up with production crew members at the park, but despite holding up traffic and creating quite a spectacle with brightly decorated rickshaws being pulled by very hot and stressed-looking farangs, they refused to make any comment on what they were doing, except to say that they were making a “random travel documentary”.

Our very own TAR Detective Neobie does some amazing detective work around Phuket:

post and photos here (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17788.msg362184.html#msg362184)
students, road sweepers... My three-day-old Thai wasn't very helpful, but this is what I found out:
Only about 5% of the conversations were in English, so there might have been quite some miscommunication...
According to the gardeners, a group arrived in the park at about 4pm. Production in the park went on for about two hours, until about 6pm. They gave me the *running motion* *around the lake motion*. Appearing frequently in the conversation was the English word "exercise".
A cyclist told me that production spent time in the Fitness Center - a tiny indoor public gym on the north side of the park. Normal opening hours are 6am to 9.30am and then 5pm to 8.30pm (for the working class), so there might have been an Hours of Operation. The guy who opened the shutters at 5pm couldn't, or wouldn't, communicate anything about what happened.
The Phuket Gazette photo was taken next to a police booth. Nothing from them. The shops along the road outside the park mostly don't know anything, and even those who said they knew, I think those were false positives. (My fault, my Thai sucks.)
I have absolutely no idea what they could have done in that gym. It's just weights machines and stuff. There were photos of a muay thai event on the notice board though, but it looked like a different location. Heading all the way to Phuket, to lift weights??
Oh, by the way? Teams trying to get to "Rama Nine Park" will not get ANYTHING out of the locals. They know it as Seum Luang, and even then it's pronounced quite differently than the way we would...
Your foreign correspondent Neobie, reporting from Phuket.

You know how astronomers find new stars by looking where there's a blank spot in the night sky? Yeah that's kind of the way it is with TAR.
Popped by the Phuket Zoo, and the staff there were very reluctant about saying anything to do with filming! There were some pretty lame excuses ("Oh there are many people." "Oh I forget."), so I can pretty much confirm that this is one of our racers' locations!
Which, sad to say, kind of means a monkey show is slated to appear on our TV screens soon.

Alright one last bit from the streets of Phuket:

Met a group of elderly gentlemen in Rama IX Park who spoke Cantonese, and they told me that something had been going on along Thanon Thalang, in the historic core of town. And... that happens to be exactly where my hotel is!
So for two days I've been walking up and down the streets in the district, drawing pictures of boxes and envelopes... You get the picture!  And yes, apart from the "sightings" of a certain Leonardo DiCaprio filming The Beach a couple of years back, there's TAR news!
At about 1-3pm on 15 November, various shopkeepers in the district saw farangs pulling rickshaws around the street. A shop on the western end of Th Thalang suggested that they might have started on Soi Romani (a little alley running off the north side of the street). However, shops on the alley know nothing about TAR filming, instead pointing me to another production there on the 27th. A traffic warden I talked to on Th Krabi told me about Wat Phuttha Mongkhon Nimit on the north end of Soi Romani (followed by communication breakdown), so I'm not sure if he was talking about TAR or rickshaws in general. No rickshaws when I went to the temple though.
Other sightings, that when plotted on a map, give a good sense of where teams would have gone:
East along Th Dibuk, between Soi Romani and Th Phuket
South along Th Phuket, between Th Dibuk and Th Thalang
West along Th Thalang, between Th Phuket and Th Yaowarat
The sightings then disappear. I'm really not sure how they made their way to Rama IX Park from there. Two shops also suggested the Thai-Chinese Museum on the north side of Th Krabi as a *Thai lost in translation*, but I didn't understand the significance. Staff there genuinely didn't seem to know much.
Somewhere in one of these conversations there was a mention of a woman pulling a man; but the man was "holding a camera", so I'm not sure what that means. There was also mention of a police escort going in front of the teams, about two or three motorcycles.
There remains one single hotspot that I have yet to talk about. Everyone within a 50m radius pointed me to a Chinese herbal shop on the south side of Th Thalang, touting itself to be the "Oldest Herbal Shop in Phuket". Another communication breakdown there (real or feigned), but there's one thing that made me very sure that TAR was here.
Coming right up with photos (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17788.msg362699.html#msg362699)!

I'm reasonably certain they're entering Rama IX park off of Chao Fah road; there's no Rama V park in Phuket that I could find. Compare the plants and the orange/rattan looking building in the background to this (http://www.mapjack.com/?iQdwT3PLXcwD).

You find the best stuff Slowhatch!  :yess: :jam:

Clues:

TEAMS TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WHEN THEY RECEIVE A FOOT MASSAGE FROM A LOCAL ELEPHANT, AND THE EXTREME HEAT OF THAILAND CAUSES ONE RACER TO COLLAPSE, ON "THE AMAZING RACE," MARCH 29
"Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla???" (Thailand) -

-The teams travel from India to Thailand on the seventh leg of the race

-Once there, they pose with a tiger and receive foot massages from an elephant
Teams take a walk on the wild side…or rather, the wild side walks on them

-One team finds that time is not of the essence when a shopkeeper hinders their movement,
One team finds itself at the mercy of a slow moving Thai shopkeeper.

-A first place team finds itself in the penalty box—and their victory in jeopardy
and others discover that a hurried pace doesn't always equal victory, particularly when mistakes can add up to penalties

-The region's extreme heat causes one racer to collapse at the pit stop
and in the extreme temperature of Thailand, one racer collapses from exhaustion.

Good thing about TAR:A casting mactors? You see Paula at every street corner in Thailand.

The bad thing? Travelling to the Philippines and... :groan:

Is the gorilla an uneducated guess by our racers looking at the photo in the first clue?

OOH! Just noticed something in the photo that tells us without a doubt which team it is! (Look closely!)

We know the racers have a picture of a "monkey" to look for...

And we already know this is Luke and Margie, but would love to know what you see...  :hearts:

Searching for monkeys and gorillas in Phuket turns up these guys. I think it was "the mean blogger" who called it a "picture of a monkey" - but the title says Gorilla?.
The orangutan is a popular character at the Phuket Zoo - there must be a thousand pictures of him in Flickr.

I don't think we have any evidence of them going to Patong, but they seem to have a few interesting gorillas there.

Note: I have not seen or touched any monkeys...

Is Patang the same as Patong Beach?

Because I do have some reason to believe that we may possibly see racers at Patong Beach.... (http://planetsmilies.net/angel-smiley-5097.gif) (http://planetsmilies.net)

hey Neobie! I'm from the Philippines and we don't really see "them" in every corner of the streets here, heck, they're not even THAT famous! After they made everyone hate them (Gosh, I hate them too during the race, 8 first place wins?!? WTF). But what's ironic is that Paula's hitting the shores of the Philippines with advertisements too!

Anyway, back to the real topic,

Could this be related to the "picture" the teams are searching for as they land in Phuket?
I really think Jodi/Christie survives the next leg and probably one of them saying this title.but its just a gut feel...

Suggested by traffic warden / traffic police at E. Possible start of rickshaw task.
Witness saw teams running east, past A.

Soi Romani (Romani Lane) (1st, 2nd photos; parking lot on right hand side of 2nd photo)
Possible start of rickshaw task, as suggested by witness at D. It's a narrow lane, with a smallish parking lot at the south end.

Yuen Chun Tong Herbal Shop (3rd photo)
Will definitely be visited by our teams.
Witness at B saw teams turning right from Th Phuket onto Th Thalang, escorted/led by a police motorcade.

Thai-Chinese Museum (last photo)
Suggested by witness at C. No reports from the people at/around the museum though.

That's what I'm thinking: the TV guide confused the episodes. What are the chances they'd be issued the same gear for two eps? I don't see the hobby horse, but everything else is similar.

They are from India ... working on screencaps for EP6 now. No matter, like I said, Jen & Kisha survive.

Cutie Cara! Jaime's the one with bad attitude and she's the nice goddess. <333

Detour options are probably taking a picture with the tiger or being stepped on by the elephant. It seems Cara/Jamie flaked out on the tiger one.

Well, having suffered through a bout of heatstroke 20 years ago......what I felt then is about exactly what I saw Margie do. I was very very lucky. I only lost about 5 years of short term memory.

You have to be very careful after the first episode. How many NFL players have died on the second episode in training camp.......I can remember two I think

Well, I just hope Margie only had the intermediate stage of heat prostration. If she trully had heatstroke, a competent doctor will end her race. You cannot recover in a 12 hour pit stop. It took me about a month to recover.

Next On The Amazing Race

Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla??? (Thailand)

Teams take a walk on the wild side…or rather, the wild side walks on them.

One team finds itself at the mercy of a slow moving Thai shopkeeper.  :yess:

A first place team finds itself in the penalty box—and their victory in jeopardy hmmm

and in the extreme temperature of Thailand, one racer collapses from exhaustion.

;D  Found this Thailand blog (http://joninthailand.wordpress.com/) with a reference to a "one-armed tiger trainer".   :ascared

here's an quote:

Today I woke up at 8:30 and ate at Don’s. I trained at 10 with matt. Morning training went great. Matt showed me some good clinch work. Afterwards I went back to the Zoo with Rhys. I watched all three shows this time, and watched him getting his picture taken with the tiger. I didn’t tell him the details and he flipped when the one-armed Tiger “trainer” pushed him to lay on the beast. It was great fun. I trained int he afternoon, and then made my way to Cheap Ass for dinner and bull****ting.

The title gorilla is probably there as well.

Teams take a walk on the wild side…or rather, the wild side walks on them.

- The detour everyone's talking about?

One team finds itself at the mercy of a slow moving Thai shopkeeper
- I think that its Cara/Jaime

A first place team finds itself in the penalty box—and their victory in jeopardy
- Another Heather/Eve situation? At first it looks like T/V having Romania all over again, but analyzing the line, they were already victorious or at victory already being jeopardized = pitstop? I sure hope its not T/V (man, their clues are obvious every week...)

and in the extreme temperature of Thailand, one racer collapses from exhaustion.
- We all know who that is! And I believe that they're last to arrive this time... She looks to exhausted to be first in the race.

I most likely would think that this is a NEL. Their task looks touristy - taking pictures with a tiger? being stepped by elephants? gorillas? Something I want to do when I go there, not Amazing Race-ish... and would TPTB like to have two speedbumps in China? That would be boring... The only time that this would become an elimination leg is that Margie would be incapable of going to the race after her heat exhaustion.
Title: Re: TAR14 EP7: 'Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla???' (Phuket, Thailand)
Post by: Moo on March 23, 2009, 02:25:20 AM
Going into better analysis... Here's the leg for next week...

Next leg, teams leave Jaipur for Phuket

They first find a picture of a monkey for their clue... and it leads them to

a tea house (oldest teahouse in Phuket) ? (As proven by a WRP paper pictured) - DETOUR?

Teams encounter a detour: Enjoy Phuket Zoo's attractions for free, courtesy of WRP or something to do with shoes?

And then go for the Roadblock(?) - pull a traditional rickshaw to/from Rama IX Park(?) (Margie struggling to carry Luke picture) stroller or whatever you call with your teammate riding and walk to the confusing(?) streets of Phuket and proceed to...

Wat Thepnimit - Pitstop of the Race, where an amazing race contestant collapses - first time in the history of the show (Margie), and another MAY pull a Heather and Eve by arriving first and then gets a penalty (Tammy/Victor?) ...

--

Spoilers seem to indicate too much places... I don't think that WRP and TPTB would be that sadistic (unlike McKay in the Hue, Vietnam Leg of TARA3 = Death March leg) to let teams do a roadblock and a detour and pull themselves using a traditional rickshaw, just like what the blog said that they changed places quite some time...

Sounds like a light leg of the race similar to Novosibirsk... and to enjoy Phuket, they should have let teams wear mountain gear jackets while doing the roadblock, since they were stripped off almost all their clothing in the marathon roadblock in Novosibirsk...  :funny: :funny:

I wouldn't be surprised that future seasons would be visiting amusement parks already...

If my search is correct (Google Maps only :groan: ), then that would be like 20-35km away. I will be surprised if all the other teams can manage it then. It'd take more than 5 hours to reach there on foot alone so I'm guessing there will be a point where they'll retrieve the clue containing the RB that is nearer to the PitStop? But that is only if my search is right. lol

Edit: Checked the first few posts, is the pulling task an RB or a task where they take turns? I'm confused. But anyway I hope Margie is alright and it is lucky that they are at pitstop.

Good job on the Pit Stop, hakushu8! Me knowing doesn't count (it helps if you've been there before!), but I'm surprised you could actually dig that out on an online search! It seems to be the only picture of the stupa floating around online...

Witnesses have seen the rickshaws up in Phuket Town, which is 4.54km from the Pit Stop. And while it's not 20-35km away, it's still probably too far for someone to be hauling his/her teammate! I'm thinking they stop at Suan Luang (2.2km from town), which is where we see Margie/Luke in the preview anyway...

Any guesses on the 'eksasai' they're 'supposed' to do in the Suan Luang gym?

hakushu8, let me first say welcome back. It's good to have you back on board.

The address of Wat Thepnimit is Moo 1 Baanlaemchan, T.Vichit, Muang, Phuket 83000

I have an alternate address for Wat Thepnimit on Chao Fa East Rd, but since it is also in Vichit that's likely the town.

A more definitive local source says Wat Thepnimit (or Thep Nimit) is about 3km outside Phuket town on the road to Chalong (Chao Fa Road) in Tambon (sub district) Wichit.

Here  is a story of a visit to Wat Thepnimit:

Jamie's Phuket - 05 July 2008

Wat Thepnimit

Wat Thepnimit (or Thep Nimit) is about 3km outside Phuket town on the road to Chalong (Chao Fa Road) in Tambon (sub district) Wichit. You can't see the temple from the road, though the entrance is quite obvious. The temple is behind Thepnimit School. When I visited yesterday morning, kids were arriving for school...

The temple was very quiet, as the local temples normally are. It's not a large temple, but as always I found some points of interest (if you like temples!). The main building was locked, as they often are - the local temples are not normally open 24-7.

Normally the temples have a kind of bell tower. Here the bell was in something like a pagoda, brightly painted with pictures of lotus flowers.

I had read on another website a story about a new chedi built at Wat Thepnimit about 3 years ago to house what is described as "Buddha’s relics". It seems many local people helped to build this new golden Chedi which is about 8 meters high and very golden indeed!

The Monks houses here looked very simple and there were cats and chickens running around all over the grounds.

You find "holy trees" all over Thailand with cloth tied around them and Buddha images placed among the roots. Here's one at Thepnimit temple:

Some of those cats I mentioned decided I was worth following. Maybe they are used to someone bringing them food. One cat would not sit still for a photo. If I moved back a meter to take a picture, it followed...

Then found a friend...

There are pictures in the white space above, but they would not copy for me. To see them, visit Jamie's Blog July 5, 2008 and look to the bottom:

Good pick-up mwooden  . I'm thinking its a Detour ( 4 pairs of contestants) and perhaps the taking the pic with the Tiger is the general task because the teams were on flight with the photo of the "monkey" but we also have the Elephant massage at the zoo so? Maybe the gym has something to do with the other detour option? The herbal shop something Fast Forward? I have to go re-read page 1 now ......

I could see a Team using only one of their members (Victor) to pull the rickshaw to the PitStop.  Then they would incur a penalty for not following directions.

That makes sense to have the zoo be the general task (and first task as teams are so bunched there). I'm thinking it's kind of a "round robin" of zoo tasks -- check all these things off (elephant massage, tiger pic, etc) before you go?

There's a lot of info in Neobie's blurb, but I think the herbal shop and rickshaws could be separate.

Do you get the impression that the gym was just a staging ground for production or that it was actually used by racers?

Perhaps the herbal shop holds the clue for the rickshaw task, and directs teams to pick up their rickshaw on the nearby Soi Romani?

Or is only one team held up by the slow shopkeeper? That would make it a Fast Forward or a Detour?

YES on the herbal shop owner being slow! (The older man outside who also speaks Cantonese, not the younger one at the counter who speaks only Thai.) You don't know how long I was trying to interrogate him for information! :res:

It looks like Cara is at both the elephant "massage" task and the posing with a tiger task based on what she is wearing.

Sadly, after this one, the show takes a week off.  Which is going to suck, because this season has been one of the most exciting ones yet (at least to me)!  Even more so than TAR12, which I also thought was very exciting.

"... taking turns pulling each other around..." = the rickshaw roadblock

I feel like you guys read into things a little too much sometimes  ;D

They are trying to determine if the rickshaw task is a DETOUR or a ROADBLOCK; because if only one person is pulling the rickshaw it would be the roadblock; but if they take turns doing it, it may be a detour.  It could also be a general task. (probably unlikely since it is very physically demanding)

YES on the herbal shop owner being slow! (The older man outside who also speaks Cantonese, not the younger one at the counter who speaks only Thai.) You don't know how long I was trying to interrogate him for information! :res:

I have a theory. From what I've read, Margie is suffering from heat exhaustion, not a heat stroke. Acording to the article on Wikipedia; Blood pressure may drop significantly from dehydration, leading to possible fainting or dizziness, especially if the victim stands suddenly. The rickshaw task is physicaly demanding, and it most definitaly would lead to Margie's attack. Combine this with the sighting of the rickshaws near the pitstop, I'm thinking the rickshaw task is a regular task in which they are required to pull them to the pitstop entrance.

In the case of Margie, this puts her pulling a rickshaw, dropping it to make a quick run to the matt, and stopping. All the sudden she's standing still. What happens next we've already seen.

Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla???

Clue #1 probably refers to an elephant Detour or Roadblock (I think Detour).

Clue #2 -- no idea.

Clue #3 -- maybe Tammy & Victor.  But they're safe.

Clue #4 -- Margie, obviously.  It may be heat exhaustion, however, so she may be able to continue in the Race -- for now.

I think the rickshaw is a general task because it ends at the PitStop mat.

I do not think TAR has ever had a Detour or Roadblock end directly at the mat.

There have been some that are close. The Zorb roadblock in New Zealand (TAR5) comes to mind. Do we have evidence that they bring the rickshaw all the way to the pitstop though?

As I mentioned on the last page, it might just be to the entrance and then a qick run to the mat, which would include a sudden upright stop for Margie, bring on heat exhaustion.

What was the other? It's very well known. Think World Aids Day (that's not the reason, but it was the same day when Phil left the mat).

If they are last, it won't matter too much.  But will she be fit enough to leave in 12 hours?

Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla??? (Thailand)

A first place team finds itself in the penalty box—and their victory in jeopardy hmmm

adding more clues:

TEAMS TAKE A WALK ON THE WILD SIDE WHEN THEY RECEIVE A FOOT MASSAGE FROM A LOCAL ELEPHANT, AND THE EXTREME HEAT OF THAILAND CAUSES ONE RACER TO COLLAPSE, ON "THE AMAZING RACE," MARCH 29
"Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla???" (Thailand) - One team finds that time is not of the essence when a shopkeeper hinders their movement, and others discover that a hurried pace doesn't always equal victory, particularly when mistakes can add up to penalties, on THE AMAZING RACE 14, Sunday, March 29 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Phil Keoghan is host.

On an unrelated note, I've noticed some coincidences placement-wise with Tammy & Victor/Mel & Mike/Margie & Luke.

On legs 1-3:

On legs 5 & 6:

T&V are not going to end up 8th, but it'll be interesting to see if the trend holds, where T&V make a mistake, M&M end up 1st, and M&L end up 4th.

  • Based on these two clues, I'm going to guess that Tammy & Victor probably rush to the pitstop, arriving first, but are going to be penalized.  Because of the words "their victory in jeopardy," I assume that whatever team it is will be safe otherwise they would've said "on the brink of elimination" or something like that.
  • I'm going to take a wild guess that Tammy & Victor and Mel & Mike manage to get to Phuket with a lead over the other teams, which is why the clue only mentions "their victory in jeopardy."
  • The tiger and the elephant tasks individually seem too easy to be a detour.  They both look like those grab-a-number and wait in line type of tasks, which usually seem to apply to roadblocks.

  • The rickshaw task makes sense to me as a roadblock.  The spoiler post said that Margie & Luke took "four wrong turns."  If team members were to take turns pulling each other, I don't know if it would be easy to dictate where and when team members could switch.

On an unrelated note, I've noticed some coincidences placement-wise with Tammy & Victor/Mel & Mike/Margie & Luke.

On legs 1-3:
  • T&V were 2nd --> 1st --> made a mistake (8th)
  • M&M were 4th --> 2nd --> 1st
  • M&L were 1st --> 4th --> 4th

On legs 5 & 6:
  • T&V were 2nd --> 1st
  • M&M were 4th --> 2nd
  • M&L were 1st --> 4th

T&V are not going to end up 8th, but it'll be interesting to see if the trend holds, where T&V make a mistake, M&M end up 1st, and M&L end up 4th.

Interesting trends.  I tend to notice those too.  I just usually keep them to myself.
Margie doesn't look that bad when they first arrive at the pitstop, so maybe there was a long mat chat.

actually, if you look, there seems to be a possible 4 leg trend for each team

for legs 1-4
Margie/Luke 1st ---> 4th ---> 4th ---> 4th
Mel/Mike 4th ---> 2nd ---> 1st ---> 6th
Tammy/Victor ---> 2nd ---> 1st ---> 8th  ---> 3rd

for 5 and 6
Margie/Luke 1st ---> 4th ---> possibly 4th in Phuket and Bangkok?
Mel/Mike 4th ---> 2nd ---> 1st in Phuket? eliminated in Bangkok?
Tammy/Victor 2nd ---> 1st ---> second to last or even last on possible NEL in Phuket? bounce back and finish 3rd in Bangkok?

if this trend keeps up throughout the race, then Mel/Mike will be knocked out in Bangkok
Margie/Luke make it to Beijing
and Tammy/Victor make it to the finals but finish in 3rd

However, I highly doubt that this trend is really going to hold true all the way to the end

As much as possible, I don't want to believe in trends, because with six legs already, we see a periodic trend with this three teams... including everything from roadblocks (Mel smoking the roadblock is VERY SIMILAR to him paragliding and others walking down a hill, Tammy/Victor completely OWNING the leg, ahead by 1 clue among the others, Margie/Luke being head to head for a "footrace" somehow to first. I'd be more happy if they'd be the final three right now, judging by their actions

Ok, so I found this album with Phuket pics of a family.

Album by a Family (http://www.khaosok.dk/album/Phuket/Phuket%20Zoo/index.html)

Elephants walking over you while you are laying down = part of the elephant show.
Supporting image (http://www.khaosok.dk/album/Phuket/Phuket%20Zoo/slides/003.html)

From the Phuket Zoo (http://www.phuketzoo.com/photo.html) website:
Quote
Our staff will take a Polaroid snap of you posing with our Tigers. You can choose a young tiger or a fully-grown male to sit with depending on your courage!
The family poses with the tiger here (http://www.khaosok.dk/album/Phuket/Phuket%20Zoo/slides/002.html)

Anyways, what I'm trying to say is these make it seem like the Elephant Walk-Over and Tiger Photo-Op are the two detour options.

One last thing: the chimpanzee is not part of the Monkey show, because according from the Phuket Zoo (http://www.phuketzoo.com/monkey_show.html) site again:
Quote
We use short-tailed macaque monkeys for this show. They are still a kind of common wild animal in Thailand.

So going back to the family album above, they have a picture with a chimpanzee here (http://www.khaosok.dk/album/Phuket/Phuket%20Zoo/slides/004.html), but that's a male one (you can see it's scrotum, and the penis can be seen in the next photo (http://www.khaosok.dk/album/Phuket/Phuket%20Zoo/slides/005.html)). However, the one in the recent preview is a female.

So I'm just gonna guess that teams have to find the cage ( :( ) of the female chimp because that's where the clue box for the detour is, or she might be the one giving the clue...  (:;) (sorry, I think that second possible scenario is exploitation).

Nice links, hakushu! Even if I do hate and despise zoos in general, and exploited animals (http://martybugs.net/blog/blog.cgi/photos/animals/WaitingMonkey.html) in particular. :knuckles:

I will say that I have reason to think that we will still have another task we haven't seen yet. They are in Phuket, land of beautiful beaches, right? No way we aren't going to see some beaches/water.

So you can take it FWIW, but I think we will be seeing some Thai fishing boats soon...

Nicely put together hakushu!!
orangutan (http://www.orangutan.net/archives/133)  no? I for one have never seen or touched a monkey so what do I know?

Mel and Mike: Casuarina palms and coconut trees... Indian food for the tourists... I'll hazard a guess that this is very close to the beach.

Edited to add: It's bloody PATONG.

Well it makes sense to go from the airport on Phuket to Patong then to Phuket city.....so first task is probably in Patong.

Maybe someone can do the sun angle magic? ;D Not sure how to link to MapJack, but the coordinates are 7°53'53''N 98°17'48''E.

So now the picture they have to find is I'm guessing the orangutan at Phuket Zoo. Obviously I think the orangutan will be in a pose same as the picture, it can follow orders, right?

I do think the elephant massage and tiger picture are detours...

Kisha & Jen are nowhere in those pictures/vids, really weird...What does it mean?

So...my guess on the routes:

Fly to Phuket, Thailand. Then...Make your way to Patong Beach and search for your next clue. Maybe they have to do a task there, but I don't know. Wasn't there something about a teashop?

And then that's where they get the picture of the monkey? Possibly in a pose? If it's a photo of that specific orangutan then it might be well known to people in that area? They go to Phuket Zoo where they receive, a Detour more likely to me. And after that they have to go somewhere else (Rama IX park I think) and they'll find the Roadblock (I think it's a RB now since I've never seen Luke/Tammy running with it) all the way to Wat Thepnimit (spelling? lol). But it is quite long, so maybe the RB finished somewhere else and then make their way on foot to pitstop.

I talk too much...

The photo of the monkey is from the plane spoiler, so the Phuket Zoo's our first location.

With Mel/Mike at Patong Beach in the morning, I'm guessing we head to the west coast next.

Then it's into the town centre for the herbal shop, then the rickshaws onto Suan Luang (sightings in the afternoon).

Finish that up with a ride to Wat Thepminit, and rest (or faint) for the evening...

Now have we seen the lead two teams anywhere with the three trailing teams? And where do Margie and Luke fit into this?

Possibly Mel & Mike or Kisha & Jen?

To generate a link, click the blue button top-left. This view (http://www.mapjack.com/?jhkwTKGtWcBG) is looking towards Mel. At first I thought, since they were looking in opposite directions, that they were searching for a cab; but cabs are probably plentiful by the beach, so maybe it's something else.

I def agree, with monkey pic in hand the zoo is the first stop. Any chance the teams are shopping? Herbal shop then gym but the gym makes no sense so I'm rambling.

I am trying to remember season 4, which I think is the last time I recall teams having to take pictures of animals, was it a general task (sort of like taking pictures of the towers in season 3) or a roadblock/detour.  I would check but not at my computer.  If general task then the posing might be a general task.
Title: Re: TAR14 EP7: 'Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla???' (Phuket, Thailand)
Post by: mswood on March 25, 2009, 08:29:50 PM
It was a general task.  They also had the go inside a croc pin and get your clue as a general task in season 9.  So it is possible that these very passive tasks are general tasks and not a roadblock/detour option.

They seem awful easy for a detour task, awful easy.  Unless its just part of a series of tasks.

In regards to the video, 2 penalties? Two time penalties? Could be as much as an 30 minutes to an hour depending on the penalty.

On mention of two penalties when is the last time they have used the 30 minutes Plus time gained.   Last time I recall that being a factor was in season 9 (and it was 30 minutes minus time lost for taking the wrong train or whatever).

What was Mark & Bill's penalty?

Judging by the pictures and based on my opinion...

2 PENALTIES!?!?! Is this a first in the race? And why of all places, it is in Thailand that teams get massive and heavy penalties? (With the first being Momily - 24 hours?!!? sheesh...)

Cara/Jaime looks to be coming last or has the penalty...

Tammy/Victor looks TOO relieved or surprised with their placement, and with their looks, look that they do not take the penalty.

Margie/Luke is indeed safe.

Mark/Michael looks happy to receive 2 penalties...

I think its a toss up between Kisha/Jen or Mel/Mike...

Furthermore, Victor screaming "OH MY GOD" while their pictures are posted would look too obvious for a commercial.

But who knows?

Oh you might be right, C/J may be indeed crying because Margie faints, but a picture paints a thousand words, so it would probably hard for us to figure who gets the penalty or what actually happens... It would be very appealing if Jaime cries because she has seen how she was mean to almost every local they met starting from Romania...

Correcting my last statement, I don't 100% conclude that phuket is NEL, but what about wishing for it to be NEL... Can anyone check what time was on Luke & Cara's watches when Phil said you have 2 penalties?

Why is Kisha & Jen so invisible in these promos for next week's ep? That's the first faces of them I've seen since the last episode.

Also CBS/promo editors are smart to not show many racers at the same place, it makes it hard.

Are we sure that's Jaimie's hand on Cara's shoulder? Is that someone else in the frame with them to the left of Cara?

And the 2 penalties are for sure just for one team, not one for this team and another penalty for another team. In the preview Phil directly tells a team that they are receiving 2.

I am beginning to wonder if we have completely missed the detours. A possible scenario:
1) Fly to Phuket and find monkey at zoo. Then a take a number general task. Get tiger pic and elephant massage.
2) Go to Patong Beach for detours.
3) When finished with detours, go to herb shop for next clue
4) Clue is roadblock which pulling the rickshaw around Phuket city in a specific route.
5) After arriving at park with rickshaw, get clue to go to Pit Stop.

I have been looking at the shadows in all the shots. It appears to me that T/V arrive at the Pit Stop much much earlier than anyone else. There is no shadow on the stupa. In the pics of Mel/Mike, Kisha/Jen, Luke/Margie and Mark/Michael the shadow is almost the same. So a pretty close finish. I can't really tell in the photo of Jamie/Cara, but there seems to be a faint shadow that matches the other 4 teams. From the blogger, we know that Mel/Mike and T/V arrived on a flight by themselves. So I wonder how come the mat times for these two teams are so far apart. In the photo of Victor pulling the rickshaw in Phuket city, the shadows appear around noon to me also.

If they drop the teams off at the street at the Pit Stop, it looks like a pretty good sprint/jog to the mat and that could be what did Margie in, after pulling that rickshaw around. Isn't about a mile to mile and half from King Rama park to Pit Stop?

The gym at the park could be the location of the clue box to proceed to the Pit Stop. It doesnt even have to be open for that.

PHUKET: At least four pairs of contestants taking part in a travel documentary are racing around Phuket using various forms of transport today.
One of the challenges that faced the contestants was to pull each other through Phuket City in the midday heat using rickshaws as they searched for “King Rama V Park”.

I'm wondering now about the herbal shop/rickshaws being the two detour choices. Four pairs were witnessed with the rickshaws. We have Cara/Jamie and Michael/Mark in the herbal shop. That means everyone else would have had to pick the rickshaws. Would Mel/Mike have really chosen to do that? But I can't figure out another way for it to work.

Brought over from the spoiler page:
EP07: Jaipur, India to Phuket, Thailand
Air Date: MAR 29
Film Date: NOV 14-15
Tasks:
[Route Info]: Fly to Phuket, search for monkey matching picture (at Phuket Zoo)
[Route Info]: Perform zoo tasks (elephant massage, pose with tiger, etc)
[Route Info]: Find Patong Beach
[Fast Forward]: Will be here if there is one?
[Roadblock]: Task at Patong Beach?
[Detour]: Task at herbal shop (Nuang Choon Tong) in Thanon Talang (?) (Performed by Cara/Jamie, Michael/Mark)
OR Travel by rickshaw from Wat Phuttha Mongkhon Nimit on Soi Romani to King Rama IX Park (Seum Luang) (?) (Performed by Margie/Luke, Tammy/Victor, presumably Kisha/Jen and Mel/Mike)
[Route Info]: Find Wat Thepnimit
[Pitstop]: Wat Thepnimit
Possible Eliminated Teams: Tammy/Victor, Mel/Mike, Kisha/Jen, Michael/Mark

I came to the same conclusion as you did TARAsia. I looked back at the photos of Margie collapsing and there are no other teams present that I could see. Just a lot of crew. I think that Jamie/Cara arrived at the pit stop while the med staff are attending to Margie lying on the ground. Jamie is looking down at something and I assume it is Margie.

Could it be that Mike/Mel get actually lost now in Phuket - like in the commercials? making T/V arriving so much earlier than the others? and if they really are the first team to arrive - they probably get the penalty, but would still remain first? Arrgh! It's so confusing!

We speculate that Margie/Luke would probably be ahead of Cara/Jaime for a few minutes because of the photo up few posts back... but wouldn't the "ideal way" be staff be bringing Margie to someplace cooler first before checking in Jaime/Cara?

They were as nice as they could be, to me by email and to Neobie in person, but this is also the paper who told me directly that the team in our photo was a female/female team.  I think they had a very limited perspective and would not count on the 4 teams thing as gospel.

SO SORRY, LUKE!!  :-[ :-[ :-[

That hand appears to be connected with the person in a brown tee shirt to me. If you check (and I have) no team and no Phil shot above presumably on the mat has a brown tee shirt on. Could it be the Greeter?
I see that color matching Luke's t-shirt from his shoulder.
TARAsia fan, I think you too are right. I had looked at the multi-colored tee shirt Luke has on at the mat and discounted it being brown, but there could well be enough solid brown in the right places within the multicolored pattern.

The fishing boats could be a detour choice if the rickshaws turn out not to be. If the "taking turns" quote about the rickshaws is accurate, the fishing boats would have to be a roadblock.

Phil: you have incurred 2 penalties

Are we sure that's Jaimie's hand on Cara's shoulder? Is that someone else in the frame with them to the left of Cara?

And the 2 penalties are for sure just for one team, not one for this team and another penalty for another team. In the preview Phil directly tells a team that they are receiving 2.
Oh, goodness.  Whoever it is he says it to, I hope it's not these two.  Maybe they're just reacting to what happened to Margie if they checked in around the same time as she and Luke.

Why are you all thinking J/C and M/L?? Clearly Phil is saying YOU (ie one team) have incurred two penalties.

And it is impossible to determine who based on that promo. I think that pic is just J/C and Luke upset over Margie.

And based on her recent freak-outs, that's turning into Jaime's sole redeeming quality.

And why can't "YOU" be referring to the 2 teams standing together on the mat? That would be Jaime/Cara and Margie/Luke even iof Margie is not with Luke due to her medical treatment.

The rickshaws aren't the Roadblock so we have the other tasks to speculate on. I'll pull the screencaps and try to organize them later but wish we had more!

"Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla???"

I just can't see Phil telling Jamie/Cara and Luke that each team has a time penalty while Margie is lying on the ground. I can see him telling Jamie/Cara at the mat and then later on telling'explaining to Luke/Margie in private,  they have a time penalty. Then starting the next episode with an explanation to the viewers that Luke/Margie got the same penalty.....that makes sense to me.

But I really think that ONE other team gets two penalties....because of the great differences on the shadows on that stupa, it leds me to believe it is Tammy/Victor......at least till we get more clues/evidence.

Thanks for all the work lining it all up Puddin!!!!!

I noticed that Margie, while pulling the rickshaw, wasn't wearing a hat like Victor.

I wonder if whoever has to pull the rickshaw is required to wear a hat, or if Victor decided to wear one on his own.

I don't recall previous instances where teams were penalized for not wearing required gear.

Thanks for re-posting the hints puddin, especially this one:
"One team finds that time is not of the essence when a shopkeeper hinders their movement, and others discover that a hurried pace doesn't always equal victory, particularly when mistakes can add up to penalties..."

I always parse the words carefully, and I'm trying to figure out if "others discover" refers to multiple teams or the members of a single team.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but if multiple teams do get penalized, then it makes sense that they would use "others discover" instead of "another discovers."

And - it appears that the Rock City bar was mysteriously closed the week of November 11, 2008... :ascared

Looks estuarine, huh? If the beaches of Phuket had water that colour the tourists wouldn't be coming...

The only creek near Patong (the west coast is mostly headlands and beaches) is on the beach's southern end (http://www.mapjack.com/?NrgwTFGqWcAD). There are only four other creeks on the west coast, and some of them are way too narrow for this shot. Plenty of these on the east coast though (where the water is more sheltered).

Tammy and Victor Seems they got the penalty
Margie and Luke reaction when Phill say that Tammy & Victor Penalties
Mel & Mike For not being first
Kisha and Jen Last Team to arrive
Mark & Michael For not being first

Could it be that the first team incurs 2 penalties, while the others would have some too? Phil saying "you have incurred two penalties may only be for one team, but others have incurred penalties as well?

It looks to me like T/V, Mike/Mel and Kisha/Jen get penalties? - based on those pictures above, it seems that they're not happy reaching the pitstop...? Or maybe they heard of Margie collapsing?

I wonder if those penalties is because of the rickshaw task, perhaps they have to follow a certain path? And then other teams skip or go to a shortcut to end it faster? A wrong vehicle to use in coming to the pitstop?

I'm not disagreeing; unless they packed up the large stage gorilla it might have been available for WRP. Or, as Neobie suggests, they might be looking for the fishing-boat area south of town. Or...something else that we haven't figured out yet.  :duno:

Just a thought looking at the pitstop pictures.  You'll notice Phil is looking down.  The only team that short is most likely Mark/Michael.  Perhaps Mark/Michael find out they're not last, but find out they've been given the time penalties.  Lakisha/Jen arrive last, but are saved based on Mark/Michael's penalties.   :duno:

That hand appears to be connected with the person in a brown tee shirt to me. If you check (and I have) no team and no Phil shot above presumably on the mat has a brown tee shirt on. Could it be the Greeter?
I see that color matching Luke's t-shirt from his shoulder.

It can not be Jaime's left hand on Cara's shoulder, it it were we would see the thumb, index finger, and middle finger.  But we see a person's right hand, i.e. little finger, ring finger, and middle finger from a person standing to Cara's left.  It looks like the shoulder in a gray tee shirt which matches Luke's.  So it looks like Luke is standing with Jaime and Cara.  But where is Mom?

Margie was probably taken away to get rehydrated or whatever it was that caused her to collapse.  Luke's probably there with Jaime & Cara to hear about Margie's condition from Phil.

At least that's what I hope.  I hope Jaime & Cara aren't being eliminated.

Does anyone think the task at herbal shop (Nuang Choon Tong) in Thanon Talang (?) (Performed by Cara/Jamie, Michael/Mark) could be the fast forward? Maybe Michael and Mark win it. This is why we see Cara and Jamie yelling at the shop keeper to hurry only to lose the fast forward.

Yes the eye witness did see 4 teams with the rickshaws but the 5th , Cara and Jamie, were so far behind that the eyewitness missed seeing the 5th one?  Or One team, maybe Victor and Tammy, skipped something and got to the rickshaws before the eyewitness was there? Hence a later penalty?

Continuing with this thought...
Luke maybe hanging around as they treat his mother as Cara and Jamie finish.

Still leaves the door open for any of the teams to get the double penalty.

no proof of this but I thought I'd make a guess?

It might just be me needing sleep, but the Jaime/Cara pic looks cloudy compared to the others (the shadows on the Buddha look a lot more pronounced on the other teams' check in). Perhaps it's a close race between them and Margie/Luke for last and Jaime/Cara get hit with the penalties while they assess Margie's condition.

With that being said, Jen looks really sad; they might be last too.

Man, that'd suck if they lose it because of an incompetent shopkeeper.  I hope it doesn't get them booted.

I am starting to be afraid their Pit Stop picture is them after finding out they got eliminated, but I hope it's not.

With all of these speculations... the producers and editors surely are having laughs, because no one still absolutely knows in this forum what really happens in this episode, compared to others...

If there's a team whom I want to be eliminated this leg, it would be Margie/Luke or Mark/Michael, Margie seems to be having a tough time as the race progresses, and I don't want another Dandrew in the persona of Mark/Michael...

If there's no fast forward, could Margie/Luke, Jaime/Cara or Mark/Michael be the last 3 teams fighting for their lives this leg? We see Cara/Jaime along Mark/Michael during the shop task and with Margie/Luke at pitstop.

 I don't want Cara/Jaime to be eliminated! :'(

I don't think the herbal shop task is a one of the detour task, because if the detour choices were the rickshaw and herbal task, many teams will definitely had chosen the herbal task since it's very easy compare in pulling a rickshaw. I just doesn't make any sense to me. So I'm thinking that this task could be a Fast Forward.

About the picture of Cara & Jaime at the pit stop, I think Margie & Luke arrived minutes ahead of Cara/Jaime, but Cara/Jaime were not eliminated (They were spotted in China, right?).  Or could be a NEL if ever they were last this leg.

Continuing with this thought...
Luke maybe hanging around as they treat his mother as Cara and Jamie finish.

Hmm... I don't think that's gonna happen!

I still think T/V got penalized and/or K/J.

Cara/Jaime won't be eliminated because they have eyewitness reports spotted in China airport heading to Hawaii .

Also, if we take this literally: A first place team finds itself in the penalty box—and their victory in jeopardy
then it would have to be either Tammy/Victor, Margie/Luke or Mel/Mike... the only 3 teams (left) that have had 1st place finishes.

b. that Kisha/Jen are not eliminated?

Hey DavidJunior, just go to the thread...Ep #7: WHich team exhausts their chances to win the Amazing Race? it's over there only where puddin has her post saying that neither kisha and jen are eliminated nor it's a non-elimination...reason still not mentioned but i just hope that it's true!!!

I hope so too!

I've liked Kisha/Jen from the start
unfortunately, I didn't think they were going to make it too far in the beginning
but, after they made it passed Krasnoyarsk, I think they can go really far
Heck, if they slipped through this many legs without sightings, why not go all the way?

I think it's T&V. If it was Victor saying omg in the previews/promos, it might be because Phil said they're team number 1 and then they get penalties. Or it might also be because they got the penalties alone.
However...it does make sense that Phil looks down lower than usual because he might be talking to Mark & Michael. It'd mean Mark & Michael won FF, the common way to get first, in that case.

Also, what do you think the FF task could be, if there was one and if it's in the herbal shop? From the promos it only looks like to find something in the drawers...And in case the flight to Thailand got Mark&Michael and Cara&Jaime in the lead/tied, it's hard to believe them going for FF when there's at least one competitive team. But I don't think there will be a FF this leg.

I think T/V and Mel/Mike are ahead by one flight, and the others are trailing "like a caravan of fools/idiots"  :funny: just like Mike had said in two episodes" That is why Jaime/Cara are with Mark/Michael, and don't we see both of them in the Animal task? I think that the herbal tea shop keeper was just slow in getting their next clue...

And if there's a fast forward, it seems odd that T/V or Mel/Mike not getting it... considering (accoding to spoilers) that they are the first guys who arrives in Phuket first?

And it is impossible to determine who based on that promo. I think that pic is just J/C and Luke upset over Margie.
And based on her recent freak-outs, that's turning into Jaime's sole redeeming quality.

That's what I hope, but it looks like they're more of comforting each other instead and if they were saddened about Margie, they would've been comforting Luke.

Competing for the FAST FORWARD is the surest way I know to get eliminated. The losing team(s) is way behind in doing normal tasks. Most teams(but not Terence and Sarah in AR13, the Gaghans in AR8 or Ernie/Jeena in ARA1) if they arrive at a FAST FORWARD location that is already being worked on by another team leave immediately. The Gaghans survived this is Panama City but the other two teams did not.

This has nothing to do with Ep.7 except its timing. I observed an unusual effect last night. Normally, Thursday nights are quite dead on the RFF Amazing Race threads but last night was different. I decided that the reason was the "Survivor" effect. When there is no Survivor on Thursday night to distract those of you that watch it, then you pay more attention to what goes on here. As they way, it's an AMAZING effect.

Fabulous, Chateau!

Would Cara/Jamie (or Tammy/Victor, for that matter) have finished their penalty before Margie faints? I'd think if they were in view of the mat they would run over to help! That's a really narrow gap though!

Mm. Luke/Margie fourth again? *suspicious*

No, not Mel/Mike in danger! :( (Puddin you didn't leave us many options...)

Once again, great job, Chateau! Was wondering if it could possibly be on either side of noon, or have you taken that into account already? (If the stupa was in a different place the standings could possibly be flipped completely?)

Holy crap, they would!

. . . Okay, panic alleviated for now, but I've still got reservations.

You all really think Tammy & Victor's faces reflect those of someone who also just got penalized?  I think that's just surprise to have won another leg because Jaime & Cara got penalized.

I won't worry too much about Mel & Mike, either.  If Jaime & Cara and Tammy & Victor both did get penalized and both survive, then I think Mel & Mike are saved by Mark & Michael getting penalized.

Questions, questions. I've sure got them this morning.

Let me start with a question for puddin: Where did these strips come from(the answer obviously has to be CBS)?
and one for all of us: Why is CBS releasing such information in this episode when to the best iof my knowledge in the 2.4 years I have been active on RFF there has never been photos of each team's finish available as a preview?

Next for Chateau: If you did the time estimates for Jaime/Cara, why not for all the others too (or is that coming?)?
I am specifically interested in Kisha/Jen because they look very unhappy at the pit stop but the rest will provide insights too. Also, why in the side-by-side of Jaime/Cara and Tammy/Victor do you conclude that they were simultaneous, as the aangle of the shadow across her chest is much sharper for Tammy than for Jaime and Cara. I recognize that the tilt to Tammy's head could account for part of it, but does it account for all of it?

CBS probably wants people to talk about the race more, and guess who gets the boot or the penalty. Its a first for the race for a team to get two penalties in a leg right?

My own interpretation of the penalty is that Tammy & Victor are penalised with the two penalties. Jaime & Cara arrive at the mat in second place, just as Tammy & Victor's penalty ends. Phil says, "Jaime & Cara, you have not arrived within Tammy & Victor's penalty time. Tammy & Victor, you are team number one." Tammy & Victor look relieved, just like in that shot. Meanwhile, Jaime & Cara look upset that they narrowly missed their first first place finish of the race.

Based on the wording ... victory in jeopardy ... it makes me think the first place team will not be eliminated.  And it will be close whether or not they actaully win the leg.

Our PitStop pictures assume that this is the first time a team arrives at the mat.  However, maybe we are actually seeing the first place team at the mat after serving their penalty, their second time stepping on the mat.

Jamie/Cara, you are the first team to arrive, but have 2 penalties.

Tammy & Victor, you are the second team to arrive. ..... However, because of Jamie/Cara's penalties, you are the winners of this leg of the race.

This just speculation on my part.

I understand why you think that way, Ashe, but I'm going with the idea that while Cara & Jamie are the ones who get the penalties, they still manage to survive the leg -- they're just unhappy that they lost first place due to penalties.  I think some other team came in last -- Mark & Michael or Mel & Mike.  And part of me hopes it's not Mel & Mike because they're a nice team, but there are rumors Mark & Michael may have been on a flight to Gullin, China and Puddin told us LaKisha & Jen are safe so that leaves me with Mel & Mike -- unless Margie can't continue on in the Race.

Thanks everybody.  The picture orderings were not done with anything sophisticated.  Gator, you are correct, what I used was simply the shading on the frieze plaque on the gold stupa.  The later shots have the sun coming onto it.  More light equals later time.  I felt comfortable with that interpretation after cross checking against a cylinderical shadow line (see arrow) that creeps around the stupa.  But that line was not available in all the shots.  The actual time of day estimate for the shots comes from agreement between an azimuthal shadow line in the shots of Phil as mom goes down and my favorite altitudinal shadow line (see below, apologies to Margie).  I'm still annoyed by the absence of a clear GE indication of the Stupa's position.  If I had that I could narrow the window to a few minutes.  Maybe after the airing it will be possible.

Those cylindrical shadow lines can be just like the hands on a clock.  The solar azimuth was changing at a rate of 0.5 deg per minute when the shots were taken.  And a 6 foot diameter circle shows half a degree really easily.  At that level the shadow line's innate fuzz is the biggest uncertainty.

Nice work as always Chateau  :jam:
I searched for the Wat and pictures are few! Here it is on wikimap fwiw .. Tepnimit School (http://wikimapia.org/#lat=7.8591519&lon=98.3683687&z=18&l=0&m=a&v=2&search=Tepnimit%20School%20). And this album is labeled Wat Thepnimit (http://picasaweb.google.com/chott63/24062007#) again, fwiw, I'm not sure its the same?

Any idea of what time frame Phil is telling the team about the penalty?

Thanks Neobie!  The time window is straddling noon.  That is due in part to making a time estimate based on the Margie shot (the perpendicular is pretty much at solar apex for the day).  I got the location nailed down from this shot of Phil.  So the mat was actually off center from the Wat's main roof line.  We get to see an oblique view of the Wat's south face.  The clip with mom going down allows us to place the Stupa.  Sort of.  I would rather seeing it on GE though.  Is it hiding under a tree?

For those who believe that any teams is in the F3 because they were spotted leaving the airport in Beijing, the use of decoys is standard practice in Amazing Races. Who are selected by World Race Productions to be decoys? They draw from the 6th, 5th and 4th place finishers, all of whom typically travel with the entourage of WRP production personnel. So, that means that the reported spotting of Cara/Jaime in Beijing airport does not guarantee that they are an F3 team.

Since they are already an F6 team, if by bad fortune their penalty puts them in last place or if they get eliminated in Bagkok or Guilin, they would be avalable for decoy duty.

EDITOR'S NOTE- since puddin questioned my original statement (Margie/Luke), I checked and changed it to Cara/Jaime.

Okay, so we have Mark/Michael "possibly" in the China airport.  And Cara/Jaime in the China airport.  And puddin says Lakisha/Jen don't go home, to which I'm just going on her word (do not doubt the great and powerful puddin).  Beyond that, we have no further sightings or info on the other teams...correct?
And then we have the photos above, which by the shadows, show Mike/Mel coming in last...correct?
So we just need to figure out who got the penalty, how long it was, and who goes home.  Anyones crystal ball working, mine is in the shop :(

I think either Tammy & Victor or Cara & Jamie get the penalties.  But while I don't know how long the penalties are, I don't think that it's long enough for either Tammy & Victor or Cara & Jamie to be Philiminated.  Since the photos imply that Mel & Mike come in last, I'm going to say that they're the ones who are sadly Philiminated.

Or barely saved by someone else's penalty.  Maybe Mark & Michael's (which could just make them decoys going into Guilin).

I'll guess.

Some team does not follow the marked route effectively creating a short cut.  They are docked the estimated time it saved them.  This is probably a very short amount of time (i.e., minutes).

As an added bonus, I think other teams follow the first team down the wrong path and are also penalized.

PS - Because one team gets 2 penalties, I think the other penalty is for not following the directions.

Take turns pulling the rickshaw
Walk to the next task (do not take a cab)

Sometimes there is an additional penalty for breaking the rules, so teams will be docked more than just the estimated time saved.

I will say that I have reason to think that we will still have another task we haven't seen yet. They are in Phuket, land of beautiful beaches, right? No way we aren't going to see some beaches/water.

Mel and Mike: Casuarina palms and coconut trees... Indian food for the tourists... I'll hazard a guess that this is very close to the beach.

Edited to add: It's bloody PATONG.

If Mel & Mike are last, then the "We lost.  We lost." comments from the commercial makes a lot of sense if they ended up racing against Kisha & Jen to the Pit Stop.  I don't know if they would telegraph Mel & Mike's elimination that obviously.

I guess it all comes down to how quickly the medical staff can determine if Margie is fit to continue.

Yeah, if Margie turns out to be unable to continue Mel & Mike might be spared.  Or maybe Mark & Michael will have a penalty and thus Mel & Mike will be spared.  All I know is that LaKisha & Jen are safe, and I believe Cara & Jamie and Tammy & Victor are also safe.

Maybe someone already said it but isn't odd that Victor is pulling the rickshaw south on Patiphat going past Krabi.  Because Krabi is equal to Thalang it is strange that he is not turning from Thalang/Krabi onto Patiphat.  From the intersection of Krabi and Patiphat teams  go about 0.75 miles farther on Patiphat to the location where Margie was photographed by the spoiler.

Gorilla? Gorilla?? Gorilla??? (Thailand)

It appears from this spoiler that Margie & Luke took 4 wrong turns.  Unknown whether they realized the wrong turn and went back the way they came or just continued on and eventually ended up where they needed to be.

I think maybe that Margie has just made the second of two right turns. One of the main street into the park, and the second right turn in the park, to start the circle around the pond in the middle of the park to the gym. The ground to the left of Margie slopes down and I think that is to the pond.

So Chateau, I think she is just past where you  have the last red dot in the photo in Post 256 above and then turned right when she got to the circle road around the pond/lake.

I think that is true too.  The vexing thing is that the GE image is so blurry and so old (2004) that I can't trust that it showing the current path around the pond.  GE does show what would be the massive light pole (that light pole also shows up in MapJack).  But the landscaping has been changed since 2004 (I suspect).  So I can't pinpoint the camera position with respect to the lamp pole.  If I could then I might be able to use the shadows at its base as a 'clock'.

:duno:

Congratulations CABoxFan, you were the only one right on the button on who received the two penalties.  :jumpy:  You caught the fact that the eye-brow one was looking down at the team receiving the penalties. :jam:

I was able to use the MapJack images to construct the shadow cast by the Tsunami warning speakers.  It ends at the white arrow painted on the street and under the truck tire in the MapJack image below.

This shot was taken between 10:10 and 10:30 am (assumes November 15th).

I know that Chateau is a master of light, shadow, and time, but in this case we have a problem.  He listed the teams arriving in order from the pictures CBS released of the teams at the pitstop.  He has the team of Mark and Michael in third place, but upon careful analysis frame by frame of both their first time they arrived and received the penulty of 60 minutes and when they finally checked in 60 minutes later, there is an absolute positive match to the picture Chateau used placing all the teams at the pitstop check in between 11:48AM and 12:19PM to their first arrival 56 minutes before the others.  So this picture of Mark and Michael actually was 56 minutes earlier or around 11:00AM.  If the shadows were read correctly, then this picture used in the previews of M/M would place them in the first position not third.

And the question of a penulty for having a taxi lead the way.  Unless it was specically stated in the extended writen instructions which we never get to hear or see, it is not the first time that teams have asked taxies to lead them to a particular spot.  Happens all the time and even previously in TAR14.

Well, besides M/M being in good shape, I am going to assume that pulling a rickshaw with properly inflated tires is much easier than pulling one that needs some air in its tires.

Another exciting episode with a weirdly-satisfying end result.  I was a bit surprised there was no Roadblock.  They could've made the tiger and elephant thing a Roadblock easily.  And as for the Detour, I can't tell which I'd have chosen.  Probably 100 Barrels since Mel & Mike found such an easy way to speed right through it.

Oh, and I'm quite happy that we have not one, but two women's teams in the F5!  First time this has happened since All-Stars!

Tammy & Victor: I'm a little surprised they won the leg, especially since I could've sworn they left something behind and weren't called on it.  But at least Victor didn't annoy me all that much this week.  Good move getting a local to draw them a map, though.  Other than that, I didn't see them stand out much this week.

Jaime & Cara: Okay, Jaime, you need to calm down with locals.  Seriously.  Your only redeeming qualities in this case is that you have Cara to keep you calm, and the fact that you both work together so cooperatively.  Minus the local thing, you are looking more like redheaded versions of the BQs.  Congrats on your highest finish so far.  And I'm glad my earlier panic about the survival of these two turned out to be unwarranted! :yess:  That said . . . anyone upset at Jaime this week?

Mark & Michael: You did well on the tasks, but sabotaging the Detour like that was just not cool at all.  And didn't you read the part of the clue saying you couldn't hire a guide?!  You deserved the penalties.  Both of them.  And the loss of first place, as well.

Margie & Luke: Not much seen of you this week, but good call switching Detours quickly when you knew you wouldn't find the one you first chose.  I'm glad Margie's all right, though.  She had me worried for a moment.

Kisha & Jen: Close call, girls.  I think whatever lead you had was just good enough to keep you in front of Mel & Mike.  Sorry about the bad break with your cab, though.  Well, both of them -- both before and after the Detour.

Mel & Mike: I liked you guys, but this was a well-earned elimination.  While your driver was somewhat to blame, you two were just as culpable for not getting out of your cab and/or asking for help with the gorilla picture sooner.  You should've done that, and Kisha & Jen would be gone.  That said, I'm happy enough to see you go just because of Mel's sad-sack moments whenever things go wrong for you.

So, after seven episodes:

LOVE: Tammy, Jaime/Cara, Margie/Luke, Kisha/Jen
LIKE: Victor, Mark/Michael
NEUTRAL: No one
DISLIKE: No one
HATE: No one

Victor's still under "like," but he could get back to "love."  Mark & Michael, OTOH, are close to "neutral."  I'll base whether or not they get down there on the severity of their upcoming mistake.

This season is just getting better and better.  I can't believe we have to wait two more weeks to see what happens next!  Damn CBS for the country music thing!

Again, something you sound so awfully sure of.

Still, I agree.  I think Mel & Mike were the last team to get sent to Elimination Station.  Kisha & Jen (let's face it -- they're not making the F3) and either Tammy & Victor or Mark & Michael will be calling in to let the other teams know they got booted.

And when a local taxi driver is guiding you to the right location, it is easier/faster.  Plus we do not know how much of a lead they had after the drawer task.

I assume that we have a NEL in Bangkok so that the 5th place team is eliminated in Guangzhou. That would require some not-so-easy flights from Guilin to Guanzhou to Singapore or Bangkok and then Phuket. All for not having the 5th place team in the WRP entourage for 3 days. Why bother?  Both expediency and economics dictate that the 5th place team travel with the entourage.

That is correct. However, that may have been during a phone call. The 4th and 5th place teams place a call to Elimination Station instead of heading there, but with the next leg appearing to be in Thailand, perhaps Kisha & Jen head there as well. You never know.

That came from Rob's RFFradio interview and just said Kisha laughed for weeks about that, there was NO mention whatsoever of "at ES", so it could have been at any time later on, they all do talk!

Tammy and Victor - They got very lucky this week, it's all thanks to Mark and Michael's not too wise deeds that they came in first. Otherwise, I agree with Ashe, they did not really stand out this week. Loved Victor's shocked expression, lol.

Cara and Jaime - Nice one, ladies, their best finish yet! Jaime honestly has got to cool down. Perhaps, as she said, she's just better at handling animals lol.

Mark and Michael - It was a pity, two teams checking in before them when they had merely 4 minutes left. But well, no sympathy. It's not the first time they screwed up a first-place opportunity.

Margie and Luke - Fourth again! Unbelievable. Margie is SUPERWOMAN. I hope she's better and can run an awesome race the next leg.

Kisha and Jen - Well they barely made it. Kudos to these ladies, I personally wouldn't have expected them to make the final five.

Mel and Mike - If not for spoilers, I wouldn't have thought they'd be gone so soon. I wish they could have made the final four but oh well, they had fun, and it was fun watching them. It's just sad to see a team's fate determined by a cab driver though. If only they hadn't gone to the wrong place at the beginning... But, it happens. Just look at Christie and Jodi.

Well and as I suspected since season 10, on penalties it appears they have changed them.

No longer is it a set penalty plus or minus time gained, but just a straight penalty.

Because since they were lost and didn't know where they were going Mark & Michael absolutely should have had a time gained added to it.

Between this an a penalty application to Tom & Terry in season ten I think its safe to say that time gained or lost is no longer a factor.

I'm just gonna offer a speculation on the lack of a roadblock this leg... a first for a leg that's not the 1st or last! :ascared

The Phuket Zoo tasks were probably supposed to be a Roadblock: probably another homage to the TAR1 Thailand 1 leg RB w/ the tigers. However, they might have found it quite dangerous to do the picture taking with the tiger alone, so they just made it a general task. :(

I think if they made the "picture with the tiger" a RB, the elephant task would still be a second part of that RB.

I have to agree that the general luck task should be the roadblock, I can imagine the old shopkeeper being so dizzy because of 6 teams simultaneously shouting at him.  :funny:

I'm just gonna offer a speculation on the lack of a roadblock this leg... a first for a leg that's not the 1st or last! :ascared

The Phuket Zoo tasks were probably supposed to be a Roadblock: probably another homage to the TAR1 Thailand 1 leg RB w/ the tigers. However, they might have found it quite dangerous to do the picture taking with the tiger alone, so they just made it a general task. :(

I think if they made the "picture with the tiger" a RB, the elephant task would still be a second part of that RB.
Call it a quasi-ROADBLOCK. The reason that World Race Productions did not call it a ROADBLOCK is probably that that would have lmiited the pictures to half of each team. By making it look and feel like a ROADBLOCK, they could get the whole team in.

Now as the the quality of this task, I think it stinks on several dimensions. First is the exploitation of the tiger, which is chained for the pictures and really should be in a natural habitat without any people close. Second, the use of a serial task where each team has to wait for the others adds to the lead of the leading teams. I don't don't it's fair to ever do something like that (and it is most typical with FAST FORWARDs).

It's very strange that all of the recent "No Roadblock" legs (that were not first or last) have occured on Leg 7. Why? :duno:

You all know what the good thing about  Tammy & Victor, Mark & Michael, and Kisha & Jen all making it to the F5 is? At least one sibling team is guaranteed to be in the F3!

Also, Mel & Mike's F6 elimination guarantees that Kisha & Jen will officially tie the record for the highest-placing team of sisters.  At least in a two-person-team season.  They tie with Kami & Karli from TAR5, who had their own fifth-place finish.  They make it through the Bangkok leg, though, and they'll have officially broken that record.

Mel & Mike confirmed in a post-race interview that there was an unaired, unused Fast Forward in Leg 7 that involved purchasing items for an orphanage using the team's own money. - wikipedia

If this was indeed the FF task.. then kudos to the producers for coming up with an interesting FF task again.. that doesn't only require teams to complete the task.. but require them to sacrifice something from their own too. (TAR 7's Uchenna and Joyce Hair Shaving FF, BJ and Tyler + Rob/Kim + Tyler/James + Nick/Starr gross food FF, Nic and Don's Tattoo)

Wow, wished we could have watch it at play, and see how it affects the team who decides to use their own money and put them at an advantage. (Imagine Mark and Michael going for it, they could have gone on a run for a 10 hours penalty for giving 5 items away. LOL!)
