03/22 Amazing Race 14 - Alright Guys, We’re At War! (India)

On one of the other RFF TAR spoiler threads, someone mentioned that the title could refer to military type tasks.  Hopefully tonight's preview will give us a better idea.

If I find the post again, I will give the proper credit.

Ok, so I have been to Rajasthan, which is where the camels are typically found in India. That task could be set up anywhere in India, but the most likely places are Jaisalmer and Bikaner. That is where I expect the next leg to go to, either of those two places.

I read "Fly to "The Pink City"..."

Pink City = Jaipur.

Also, I agree to Boingo's sentiment that the background structure in that Mel photo is Birla Temple.

  Looks like mom/son are walking around in their "wedding dummy horse dance costumes" during a Detour.  Even appears to be a guy with a wedding umbrella with them.

eta: OK, think I found the right description:

Kachhi Ghodi

This is a dance performed on dummy horses. Men in elaborate costumes ride the equally well decorated dummy horses.

Originated from the bandit regions of Shekhawati, the dance is performed for the entertainment of the bridegroom's party. Dancers while elaborate costumes that resemble them riding on dummy horse. A vigorous dance, it uses mock fights and the brandishing of swords, nimble sidestepping and pirouetting to the music of fifes and drums. A ballad singer usually sings the exploits of the bandit Robin Hoods of Rajasthan.

Looks like the India leg would be so awesome, hope that it beats the other "incredible India" legs TAR has made for the past seasons!

Hmmm, Jaime and Cara seems to "lose their bags..." could they just experience the same thing that the divorcees experience in the second leg in Brazil last season?

Boingo, I definitely think that you have an accurate location on where Mel White is, or presumably where teams had to beg for rupees, you guys are great, just a few moments after the show ended, you could already match where these teams more or less be next episode! :jumpy:

puddin, what do you think would they do to the ruppees? Would they do something as close to Tina and Ken's launder money detour last season? I think that they're up to another marriage ritual... but I just couldn't find one.

Camels in Jaipur are theoretically possible, but here is a camel safari offered that ends 40km north of Jaipur:

Day 2 - SHAHPURA/ MEENO KI DHANI[ 22 kms,5 hrs] After breakfast, start the camel safari having picnic lunch via visiting the small villages. Check in at camp site, evening tea, dinner with live local music and overnight at camp.
Day 3 - MEENO KI DHANI/MAHAR/JAIPUR [camel safari 12 kms and Drive to jaipur 40 kms] After breakfast, continue the camel safari till meeting point on road side upto lunch time then drive to Samode palace for lunch and sightseeing of Samode village and then drive to Jaipur. Checkin, dinner and overnight at hotel.

Kalakho Camels  is at Dhani Village, so I guess that matches.

Searching for those buildings brings back memories of TAR1. They've already gone to Hawa Mahal, Jal Mahal and Amber Fort. I wonder if there'll be a revisit to one of those places.

My speculation though, is they revisit Amber Fort for the Speed Bump. Not actually up the fort, just below it.

Link to painted elephants that bring tourists up the fort. (http://www.exploreblogs.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/dsc_1226.jpg)

And a quote from wikipedia on the Amber Fort article:

Quote
Today, tourists can ride up to the fort from the base of the hill on elephants. On the ride, one can see the skyline of Jaipur, Maotha lake, and the original city walls.

I think I have the camel location - the tower you see in the background is part of the Jaigarh Fort.

Sorry about the size of the image - I'll try to make it smaller.

If I've got the location right - I believe it is around 10 am.

Aww at Luke. And I think Christie and Jodi are pretty much screwed, the Speed Bump doesn't sound one bit easy. Make-up on an elephant? We all know animals don't give racers an easy time. =(

press clues:

FROM THE FRIGID COLD TO THE SWELTERING HEAT, THE TEAMS MUST ADJUST TO AN INDIAN COUNTRYSIDE THAT MOVES SOME TO TEARS, AND ONE TEAM LOSES THEIR BELONGINGS, ON "THE AMAZING RACE," MARCH 22 ON CBS
"Alright Guys, We're At War!" (India) -
As the race heats up, Teams face a roadblock made of camel feed, a speed bump the size of an elephant and a detour made more complicated by an impatient taxi driver, on THE AMAZING RACE 14, Sunday, March 22 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Phil Keoghan is host.

Thanks for that info patlini and Boingo!

And CBS is on the ball tonight!

Alright Guys, We're At War! (India)

-One racer surprises their teammate and smokes the Roadblock when they think outside the bucket.

-Racers are moved to tears upon seeing slumdog conditions in the Indian countryside.

-Car 54 where are you?-One team leaves their bags in the trunk of a taxi and gets ditched by its driver

--and a Speed Bump has one team testing their makeup skills on an elephant.

Don't know who the first clue refers to.

Second clue refers to Margie & Luke.

Third one refers to Cara & Jamie (but they'll survive).

Fourth one refers to Christie & Jodi (but will they survive?)

We never had all this stealing back in the older seasons!  Maybe it is because of the bad economies around the world.

Anyway, animals and racers, not a good mix.

This episode, elephants and racers. Could be interesting.

A pano (http://www.panoguide.com/gallery/1086/) of the Amber Fort area. The racers seem to be in the bed of Maotha lake during the dry season. I can't quite match the building behind the poor victim (camelids are ornery critters), but the other things, including the elevated roadway, seem to fit. (The fort, even in the offseason, is swarming with tourists; I surprised nobody's posted anything)

Thinking about the SpeedBump ...

Jaipur has a yearly elephant festival (http://www.festivalsindia.com/elephant-festival-of-jaipur-rajasthan-india/).  The following information was found on that web page.

"Jaipur is the famous for this festival of elephant festival. The Chaugan Stadium special place in Jaipur where People organised elephant put up a variety programme, play elephant polo mathes, elephant run races and the stadium is brought alive with musician and dancer. During this festival people decorated their elephants beautiful clothes with ornaments and colour painting on their trunks, foreheads, feet and tail."

TVGuide photo in the LEG7 topic ..
http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,18562.msg383638.html#msg383638

Could Kisha and Jen last to leg 7, and Christie and Jodi get eliminated?
Since they are pictured in Phuket.
Or did they just recycle it from India?
They could easily sneak under the radar like Ken and Tina, who we thought would only make it to India.

I have a copy of the TV Guide; unfortunately, I don't have a scanner.  But when I saw the photo of Jen, I thought, "That means they make it to Thailand."  It also means that maybe I should've chosen them instead of Christie & Jodi for Joab's game!

That elephant pic could be at sunup. All the teams arrive about 5:30 am. At least I am hoping it is sunup. I am trying to figure out about the head wraps. The pink ones and the orange/red ones look similiar. They have the gold on top of them. The green ones look different, and I dont see any gold on them. I read a lot about them this morning, but I didnt find anything definitive. The pink pair and the orange/red people have the scarf draped on both shoulders or around their neck. K/J don't seem to have that much material. I could just be that particular shot. The green one for now, looks more like what the Muong people in northern Thailand wore. The head wraps in Thailand seemed to be made of thicker material, for the cold.

In the background of the shot of the green head wrap, there is a guy with a motorcycle helmet on and lots of greenry. I never rememmber seeing anyone with a helmet on in India, but I do remember people in Thailand wearing them.  Jaipur is a arid or semi/arid region. That greenry could be a park, but could also be the much more lush climate in Phuket. I want MORE pics....lol

Btw, Puddin, I do believe you about K/J making it to Thailand, head wrap or not....

Wait, so the Detour could go as follows:

Bike Detour - Mark/Mike (either a miscellaneous task or we just don't see Mark if the camel thing is the Roadblock)
Horse Detour - Mel/Mike, Margie/Luke, Tammy/Victor, Cara/Jaime (I seem to recall that they wore the same headdress as the others when they were looking for the cabs)

Also, notice the last shot on the pics puddin posted (see above). It shows Tammy/Victor wearing some headgear. From what I recall, they haven't worn something like that before, so it either means there is some task in India we're missing or they don't go until that task shows up.

Dr. Rox,
You may not be aware of the flight schedules. The first flight from Delhi into Jaipur does not arrive until 0630 and the second 0645. Then there would be the typical 30 mintues to get the camera and sound crew set up and ready to go. Finally, the airport is 8 miles from Jaipur. That sounds close, but if you have ever been there(you probably have; I definitely have) the outskirts have the traffic congestion and chaos of all large Indian cities. It could take an hour to get to the elephants. I would do the camels first since it does not require navigating through the city to get there. but assuming it is elephants first, then it would be at least 0800 before anything could reasonably happen.

EDITOR's NOTE - I subsequently discovered that sunrise in Jaipur was 0645 on Nov. 13 and 0646 on Nov. 14. All of India is one time zone, which means that Jaipur is relatively west within that time zone.

The lack of Christie/Jodi in that preview and the apparent late afternoon-ness of the elephant shot depresses me.  :(

Dr. Rox,
You may not be aware of the flight schedules.

You are most certainly correct on the arrival times in Jaipur, apskip. I had the arrival time in Delhi, 0050, in my mind. Thanks for the correction. They are 4-5 weeks away from the winter solstice and 8 degrees above the equator. I will have to look up when sunrise is then and see how close it is to sunup.

Tammy/Victor, Mel/Mike and Luke/Margie wear the orange/red head wraps and scarves. Jamie/Cara wear the pink or magenta head wrap and scarves. I assume that is part of the "Begging for Rupees" for the poor detour. Mark/Michael are doing the other side of the detour it seems to me, the bicycle "moving van" deal.

I haven't the foggiest idea where the speed bump comes in.......whether it is first, last or in the middle. I just hope it is first and they can get it done quick. The long shadows in the camel task, the roadblock, look to me to be later in the day than the detour.

This picture of the camel task is very early - I figure around 7:45 am just after the sun rises above the hills - so about 50 minutes after the official sunrise.

Trying to figure out this cagey "smokes" "bucket" and the image of LaKisha with the camel at the roadblock. Came across an interesting http://www.indiamike.com/india/rajasthan-f26/bikaner-camel-safari-t2072/ (http://www.indiamike.com/india/rajasthan-f26/bikaner-camel-safari-t2072/) post about a man who both smokes through his ears and whistles through his nose (as we saw on the extended commercial):
"Unfortunately we missed the Ear Smoking Man. I note that he can also whistle through his nose. It may be that the priests at the rat temple thought that this array of talents posed an unacceptable risk of competition?"

I was wondering about the smokes thing too.

Remember that it is apparently something to do with camel FEED, maybe they have to transport/move some?

*As the race heats up, Teams face a roadblock made of camel feed
-One racer surprises their teammate and smokes the Roadblock when they think outside the bucket.

anyway .. the small strip picture I believe is  Jamie carrying a bucket

They use painted elephants at the Amber Fort to take tourists up the hill to the fort. I think the CBS preview photo is from the elephant stables near the fort.

My guess is airport to Amber Fort - do "feed the camel" roadblock - Christie and Jodi do "Paint Your Pony Elephant" Speedbump near the fort - then downtown for more fun in India.

The stuff the bros. were carting looked similar to camel feed (pic (http://www.travelblog.org/Photos/Popped/2924233), quicktime pano (http://www.camelphotos.com/pushkar3_360vr.html)), but that's probably a coincidence.

If you literally just think outside the bucket, I guess you could carry a lot more straw in your arms than in a small bucket like the one shown. But smokes is such an odd choice for their phrasing not to be significant, no?

Well I wouldn't think you would carry "straw" in a bucket to feed a camel. It has to be something like corn, oats or grain sorghum. What ever kind of grain they feed camels in India. Also, maybe instead of taking the feed to the camel, one team took the camel to the feed. I know it doesn't make much sense, just trying to figure out the thinking outside the bucket or smokin the roadblock. It could mean that a team hauled a "sack" of feed to the camel and then put it in buckets, thereby only making one trip to whereever the feed was stored.

I still dont see where the "smokin" comes in.

I have an idea .. what if instead of someone bringing the buckets of feed to the camels, instead, brings the camels to the food? Maybe they have to feed x amount of camels?

I think for myself at least, I can't find much about this episode to do anything but literally guess.

Usually I have a better fell for what team is in which position.  India usually throws me a curve ball (as so many teams have problems here).

As for Christie and Jodi, without spoilers they still look like toast.  On paper they have the worst record for endings.  And even the leg they came in first it was against two other teams that typically perform poorly.  We would need to know when that other flight arrived with departure times to see how good or bad they really did.

And the have the speed bump to deal with.

History of Speed bump

TK & RAchel survive on a tight leg where they still would have survived even if the one team that kind of collapsed hadn't

But all others have been saved not primarily by their performance but by the utter collapse of other teams.

Ken & Tina saved by Andrew & Dan and Kelly & Christie being utterly hopeless on their asks.

Andrew & Dan survived solely due to the complete collapse of Ken & Tina and the even greater one of Toni & Dallas (still sad).

Help me out guys...

I seem to remember some other earn money for the teams or for charity in the past--that were tasks ALL the teams had to do.

I know we have not a shred of evidence for another detour, but does anyone think it possible that the beg for rupees could be something ALL the teams do, and there is another (unseen to us so far) detour? Or do Cara/Jamie's bags in the taxi preclude that?

Just a thought...

Well the webclues lead us to believe that the begging for rupees is a detour and then we see Michael on what looks like a delivery so I'm calling it begging for rupees or working for rupees

*One team leaves their bags in a taxi's trunk, only to have the driver depart without them
...and a detour made more complicated by an impatient taxi driver,
-Car 54 where are you?-One team leaves their bags in the trunk of a taxi and gets ditched by its driver

This was very tense, except for seeing who'd come in first.

Tammy & Victor: They ran a good leg tonight.  They got lucky to find a driver right off the bat, while the other teams all had to scramble to find their own drivers.  But Victor cleaned up at the Roadblock, and they both rocked the Shakers Detour.  But Victor's voice is starting to bug me something fierce now.  Still like them, but take it down a notch, please, Victor.

Mel & Mike: Great job figuring out a good way to blow through the Roadblock the way you did, Mel.  But no more pity parties when you think you've lost the whole race for yourself and Mike, okay?  I'm getting a sad fifth- or fourth-place-finisher vibe from them, absolutely.

Kisha & Jen: Wow, they really made up for last week's near-disaster.  Kisha rocked out that Roadblock (after figuring out she could use the basket, of course), and Jen seemed really comfortable doing the Shakers Roadblock despite being laughed at.  Their speed helped them win that footrace, so good on them.

Margie & Luke: For once, not too much of them this week.  But I loved Margie being reminded that she's the "Bionic Woman."  I don't know how they heard about Tammy's nickname for her.  Luke surprisingly had rhythm at the Shakers Detour.  The deaf guy has rhythm.  Who knew?

Jaime & Cara: They're still my favorite team.  But my issue with them this week was not their task performance, as they did that pretty well, but their local interactions.  Jaime, PLEASE CALM DOWN.  Your driver didn't mean to make you think he'd abandoned you and Cara.  And not all people at a task will speak English.  Be lucky you have Cara there at all, or you'd have blown up long ago.

Mark & Michael: For being the one team to pick the needle-in-a-haystack Detour alone, I reeeeaaaalllly hoped that'd be the final nail in the coffin for them.  And this is coming from someone who LIKES them.  They were last out of the Detour, yet somehow reached the Pit Stop before Christie & Jodi.  Probably a faster cab driver in the end.

Christie & Jodi: It looks like their Speed Bump isn't really what hurt them that much.  I think they were disadvantaged by their cab driver stopping for gas.  That put them way too far back to even have a chance.  Without that mishap, I think they'd have beaten Mark & Michael.  Still, when Jodi mentioned missing her daughter, I knew they were probably toast.  It's the Women's Team Curse of India, and after striking Monica & Sheree, Tian & Jaree, and Kelly & Christy, it struck Christie & Jodi, too, though just barely.  I'm gonna miss them.  The show won't be the same without them at all.

I'd have done Shakers for the Detour myself, and I probably wouldn't have thought of the baskets, either, until seeing Mel doing it, so I sympathize will all the other racers doing that Roadblock.

So after six episodes . . .

LOVE: Tammy, Mel/Mike, Kisha/Jen, Margie/Luke, Jaime/Cara
LIKE: Victor, Mark/Michael
NEUTRAL: No one
DISLIKE: No one
HATE: No one

Well, after having two straight weeks of all loves, Mark & Michael's incompetence has pushed them down to "like" for me, as has Victor's basic annoyance factor.

GO, KISHA & JEN AND JAIME & CARA!

Tammy and Victor - They had a smooth and flawless leg didn't they. Nice to see them win another leg. =)

Mel and Mike - Wow, this team is pretty amazing I must say. Everytime they thought they were screwed, they'd do so well. Recall the time Mel waited what seemed like an eternity for the wind to change, and they soared to second place too. Nice.

Kisha and Jen - Lol at Kisha stuffing the hay into her shirt! They ran a good leg, but I guess their time is almost up.

Luke and Margie - Well they either finish first or fourth, lol. Love this team, love how Luke was so sad over the poverty in India, that was a moving scene. And, "Bionic woman", lol.

Cara and Jaime - Thank God their driver did not really run off with their bags. Jaime really needs to cool down.

Mark and Michael - Was hoping they'd be eliminated but... Too bad. They got a good driver I must say.

Christie and Jodi - Sigh, saw a little hope for them when they finished their Speed Bump and were in sixth. Most of the time teams who finished ahead would reach the pit-stop ahead but not for this case, they ultimately lost to Mark and Michael. Zzz. Usually I'd hope for the team behind to catch up, this time was hoping Christie and Jodi would maintain their lead but, sigh. And yeah, I agree it was probably their cab driver that cost them the race. If he hadn't stopped for gas, they could have stayed in. But I still love them, they ran a wonderful race, perservered all the way, they gave their best! =)

Also happened to Kynt & Vyxsin when it was down to them and Nathan & Jennifer.  Left their final Roadblock first, but lost the final race to the Pit Stop.

They're moving start mats again, this time across from the rail station. Easier to get a cab there than in front of the Opera House, I suppose.

Has anyone found Dhula? Even though the Devanagari is available (below), I can't get a match using tools like Quillpad (http://quillpad.in/hindi/) or Google Indic (http://www.google.com/transliterate/indic/). Jodi mentions in this interview (http://tv.yahoo.com/contributor/2457774/news/urn:newsml:tv.tvguide.com:20090323:1004316__ER:1) that the road to Pushkar is the wrong direction:
Quote
TVGuide.com: What happened after you left he airport? You were second to leave and then you stopped for gas.
Jodi: We had a taxi driver that took us, once again, 30 minutes in the wrong direction. We went toward Pushkar and our driver insisted even though we said Dhula Village, but he thought for sure we were going to Pushkar. That was the big thing. The gas [we had to stop for] was just the icing on the cake!

From what I recall, they did finish ahead of the goths. However, oddly enough, all of the times I remember this happen happened in India:
~ Nancy/Emily finishing last at the Delhi RB, then finishing 5th in Agra
~ Tian/Jaree finishing the Alleppey Detour in 5th, then finishing last
~ Meredith/Gretchen finishing the Jodhpur RB last, then checking in 4th
~ Dandrew finishing last at the Delhi Detour, then checking in ahead of Ken/Tina

Teams are heading into the rising sun for Dhula, so it confirms Jodi/Christie's account? The "caravan of fools" on the last stretch are heading north, though.

What's strange is that I think the sign reads Ghula! (I'm assuming putting together Hindi letters works similarly to Tamil.)

Yeah, but the Goths got their cab to the Pit Stop first, well ahead of Nathan & Jennifer, so I don't know what happened there.

Neobie there definitely is a Dhula Village in Madhya Pradesh state (not the correct one for Jaipur in Rajasthan state.

With further effort, I located Dhula Village (actually to be more precise I found one in Madhya Pradesh which is not the right one and one a suburb of Jaipur which is the right one). Please go to the Maps! Maps! Maps! thread and look for post #46 for the map.

Ken:

I've been in Jaipur in November. First, it isn't summer. Jaipur is in the northern hemisphere (as I am certain that you know). My source states "summer months of April to early July having average daily temperatures of around 30oC". Second, it isn't hot by India standards. My recollection of 15 years ago is that high temperatures were mid 70s. The tempeerature range for Jaipur is 13 degrees C to 29 degrees C in November. Take the middle of that range and you have 21 degrees C, which is actually 70 degrees F.

Had their (Christie and Jodi)'s driver "not stopped for gas earlier in this episode, they might still be racing." That is the impression that the telecast leaves. However, it is well known from interviews that that driver tried to take them to Pushkar and that almost all of the lost time was involved in that and only a small amount in stopping for gas.
