This is a leg that had no sightings, right?

Yup it is called Siberia for a reason though. I'll add what we do have later though its not much.

Well, we know that LaKisha and Jen made it to Siberia so either they go out in this leg or (more likely in my opinion) in the next one.

I think that since there are 12 legs this season Leg 5 is likely to be a non-elim. Think back to TAR 10 and 11. So they could make it to Leg 6!

Oh, no, I don't think so.  There are two Siberia legs, and I think they're supposed to go out on one of these two.  I could be wrong and they make it even past here, but I'm doubtful about that, considering Preston all but said Kisha was laughing about him needing an extra bungee cord for weeks in sequester.  I think they're going out in Siberia, for sure -- on the second of the two legs there.

I agree, Kiwi, Kisha's laugh annoyed me to death! But I just want to see thes teams that aren't getting good story edits to make it as far as possible - I really want to get to know them better.

It would be nice if one of the Siberia legs was a non-elim. I hope that if it's not leg 5, then it's leg 4 instead of waiting until as late as possible.

Google Earth was fuzzy in Romania.  What is it going to be like in Siberia?

 no worries, gator.  A quick check in GE shows the two identified Russian cities of Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk are "in the clear".  Should be easy to following them there.   :snicker:

That looks like a ride the little train at a fast speed and spot the clue task. I forget which season where teams had to ride rollercoasters and spot the clue.

Agreed, the track looks like a rodelbahn track. The Mole had a similar spot-the-sign rodelbahn task in Santiago.

I wonder if you have to remember  the order of the shapes and signs and then reassemble them?

In some of those pictures it looks like its some type of ski slope.

I found a web site with his time line.

"1890 - April 21 Chekhov leaves to travel across Siberia to visit and report
on the penal colony on the island of Sakhalin where he arrived on June 11."

But would that be referred to as a "blind u-turn" ??

maybe the team panics and don't know who to u-turn (not knowing how far behind OR ahead any of the teams are), a-la blondies u-turning lorena/jason and goths u-turning nick/grandpa

Jaimie and Cara are my pick for the U-TURNED based on that preview alone. They look like they're about to cry and if they're having that much trouble with the wood wall detour you'd think that they would just switch.

Detour: Stack or Construct

Stack- Follow the marked path to the woodwork (?). Then, gingerly build a wall of firewood by stacking one pile of wood into a neat,  traditional formation to receive your next clue

Amanda/Kris alongside Jaimie/Cara (shown complaining about Amanda not doing anything)
seperate shot of Mel/Mike but it looks about the same time frame

Construct - Follow the marked path to the workshop. Then, using all the provided pieces, assemble a set of siberian shutters. Then, install them on a nearby house so that they are working properly in order to receive your next clue

Mark/Michael

Roadblock: Speedreader

Victor
Christie
Luke
Jaimie

Probably an hours of operation delay and the Roadblock is the first task of the leg.

The first thought that came into my mind for a blind U-TURN which sends shocks had two scenarios -

1. One team just U-TURNing another team without any reason
- This is a duh-reason, which means it is possible for any team to be U-TURNed by another team next week. No point trying to figure out who.

2. Blind, doesn't even make sense for the decision made to U-TURN the team
- Christie/Jodi, Jaime/Cara came into my mind instantly.. because they have been in the back pack for the past 3 legs.. it doesn't even make much sense to U-TURN them.

And who do i see using the U-TURN? Either Cara and Jaime or Mark and Michael. For some reason, i believe Mark and Micael will use the U-TURN.

I thought it was most likely the"blind U-Turn" referred to a new twist where teams don't know which team inflicts the U-Turn.

I'm expect this to be an NEL so it doesn't matter much who goes - I could see any of the teams except Amanda/Kris finishing last based on the preview.

Typical progression of legs in Amazing Races goes an average of 5 legs before an NEL. However, in this case the timing suggests that a TBC is more likely than a NEL.

This looks to be like a diabolical DETOUR. STACK or CONSTRUCT each looks very difficult unless you are a carpenter or a woodsman, which no AR14 racer is. The rodelbahn (presumably) ROADBLOCK looks very easy, so the twist has to be remembering something viewed along the track and then the ability to translate that from Cyrillic into English.
Title: Re: TAR14 EP4: 'It Was Like a Caravan of Idiots'(Siberia)
Post by: apskip on March 02, 2009, 09:21:43 AM
Teams did not arrive in Brasov until 0920 and they had the RAODBLOCK and DETOUR to contend with. With the exception of Brad/Victoria, they should finsh at between noon and 4pm. After the pitstop, they have about a 3 hour drive in the middle of the night (more during the day time) to get to Bucharest airport between 3am and 7am. The best route Bucharest to Kransnojarsk after 3am is one of these 3 combinations probably taken by the 3 leading teams:

There are 3 choices for the first flight, OA382  OTP ATH 0940 1115 or OA942  OTP ATH 0945 1205 or TK1444  OTP IST 1050 1215
Second flight is SU296 ATH SVO 1310 1730  or TK1415  IST SVO  1335 1740
Third flight for all 3 is SU779 SVO KJA 1055 0540+1
Note: there are also inferior routes through Paris or Frankfurt requiring leaving earlier.

The next best combination, used probably by all other teams, is:
OTP  BUD RO9233 1040 1110
BUD DME MA106 1440 1910
Moscow DME Krasnojarsk (KJA) S7071 2220 0645+1

Note for all routes that transportation systems in Russia are set up to funnel through Moscow(logical in the case of goingn from Buchrest to Krasnojarsk but not very logical for Novosibirsk to Delhi.

We don't know how the Blind U-Turn works. Can the team that chooses to use it have to randomly pull a teams picture? They don't carry their own picture right? Like a game of chance ..

What happened to the blizzard? :groan:

Our teams can arrive in Russia earliest on the 6th, and must leave latest by the 11th.

Krasnojarsk had "light snow showers" from the 9th to the 11th. Clear or cloudy otherwise.
Novosibirsk had "light snow showers" on the 9th and 10th, "light snow" on the 11th. Clear or cloudy otherwise.

And if you believe everything you read from World Race Productions I have a major bridge to sell you. There are known to be 8 elimination points and 1 finale. That leaves 3 legs for NELS or TBCs. I have been wrong on recent speculations of when a TBC might happen (it hasn't), but I still think it is appopriate to speculate that AR14 will be different.

I'm thinking we have too much time for a TBC?

Now if Romania was extended, teams arrive in Krasnojarsk by the morning of the 8th. A day of tasks, then a TBC and an overnight train to Novosibirsk? They'd be checking in to Novosibirsk around afternoon of the 9th.

Add another extended Pit Stop, and teams depart Novosibirsk early morning of the 11th. They're therefore likely to make a flight (departing at 10.55am) that'd have them checking in at Jaipur on the 12th instead of the 13th (and that's with two extended Pit Stops).

NEL? Probably. TBC? Maybe not.

Huh? It's a long way on the TransSiberian Railway from Krasnojarsk to Irkutsk. I think I got a 15 to 16 hour transit time. However there are 2 nonstops each way but only on Mondays:

KJA IKT 7B517 0810 0945
KJA IKT FV577 1100 1345

and one in the return direction only on a Saturday IKT KJA 7B518 1105 1145 and one in the return direction only on a Monday IKT KJA  FV578 1540 1635.

This does not mesh well with the potential arrival of teams in Krasnojarsk on Saturday Nov. 8.

Well, thanks to the video.. the first place teams, by flight in Krasnoyarsk are Michael/Mark Christie/Jodi Kisha/Jen. That is IF this is who the clue is referring to and if their is not bunching. We don't know how the Blind U-Turn works. Can the team that chooses to use it have to randomly pull a teams picture? They don't carry their own picture right? Like a game of chance ..
The Munoz brothers don't appear to be U-Turned so?

Amanda & Kris aren't U-Turned either as we see them reading the detour options

Puddin, don't teams find out they are U-turned after completing one of he detours?

It would be 15-16h if you're headed to Irkutsk, but you'd be lost in Siberia, Apskip!

It's around 12h from Krasnojarsk to Novosibirsk, for example 6.26pm to 6.47am the next day.

So, yeah. Probably too much time for a TBC.

Victor Petrovich Astafijeva, who ever heard of him before today? Now Anton Chekhov I believe most of us have heard of. However, Chekhov was born in Taganov in the Rostov Oblast in southwest Russia, a long way from Siberia.

However, there was a relationship more than Chekhov's references to his "warm Siberia". there must have been a significant relationship. Artist Michael Pennington devised and performed a play titled "Chekhov in Siberia" on BBC Radio in 1986.

That relationship was his trip as part of his medical studies to Sakhalin Island in the far northeast of Siberia (that would be the island whose southern half went from control by Russia to Japan in 1905 and came back in 1944). He surveyed 10,000 convicts sentenced to lifetime quarantine there for his doctoral research.

I don't think I am lost in Siberia. If you examine my multiple posts on the subject of TransSiberian Railway schedules, Neobie, you would conclude otherwise. I am quite familiar with the Krasnojarsk to Novosibirsk schedules, as stated in all versions of the Timelines since we knew Krasnoyarsk was a stop for AR14 and perhaps even a little before that. What is going on here is some speculation about teams maybe goign to Irkutsk. I don't think it happened, but it does not hurt to be prepared with the logistics of how they could do it.

Actually...none of the U-Turns have come after roadblocks so far.

And also, doesn't Michael (or Mark) say in the preview that they're looking for the house to put the shutters on? That's the second half of the Construct detour, so if they've been U-Turned, they've probably completed the Stack task and are looking to finish this one, and they've lost their lead because they can't find the house, not because they've been U-Turned.

If the roadblock is the 1st task and Luke is having trouble doing that than we can almost be sure that the stacks completed are not theirs.  They could have done the other task.  The completed task could have came from Jennifer and Lakisha which means they could have been the 1st into the task meaning they could have u-turned Mark and Mike.  Or on the other hand that could be completly wrong.

It has to be one of the other early arrival teams, K/J or J/C, that would have the ability to U-Turn Mark/Michael. Personally, I dont see that type of behavior in Kisha/Jen, but Jodi/Christie have shown that they have a sneaky nature, ie, in the Leg 1 train ride from Zurich to Locarno. They didn't inform anyone else, that the older lady was going to switch trains and get to Locarno faster.

I have looked back for another reference, but I don't seem to be able to locate it at the moment. Maybe I was dreaming, but IIRC didn't Jodi try to get Victor/Tammy, in some way, hinder another team previously?

Still speculating on the term "blind u-turn". Perhaps TPTB mandated that the first team arriving at the u-turn option MUST u-turn a later team--they would then select next, 2nd 3rd, etc.   :duno:

I did not see this mentioned in the thread but i might have just missed it.

What if the Blind U-turn was this.

If you chose to use the U-turn this season you do not get to chose who you U-turn. Instead you have to reach in and pull someones picture out of a box. Hence the "Blind" part.

I'm not sure if the term blind would refer to not knowing who you were going to U-turn? OR who you were being U-turned by?  Either could be dramatic!

Well, I don't think you wouldn't know WHO you're u-turning, because that could lead to a possibly very anti-climatic introduction of a "new  twist" if the team that chooses to u-turn accidentally pulls the picture of a team ahead of them.
Title: Re: TAR14 EP4: 'It Was Like a Caravan of Idiots'(Siberia)

"picture pulling" or "number selecting"--either way would work.   This would avoid the neutralizing effect of selecting a team in the forefront (ala Kynt and Vyxsin selecting Don & Nick)
Title: Re: TAR14 EP4: 'It Was Like a Caravan of Idiots'(Siberia)
Post by: Max on March 02, 2009, 09:17:10 PM
If the first team to arrive at the u-turn MUST select a team to be u-turned, you could not select a team that was ahead of you.   Whether it is a random picture pull or a deliberate number select, the result could impact the outcome of the race.

I wouldn't like it if a U-TURN becomes compulsory. I'm pretty sure it might just be a team using their U-TURN on another team for no particular reason. That would be pretty blind and stupid. So i can say Tammy and Victor or any of the top pack teams won't get U-TURNed because it would have then be seen as a strategic move and not a "blind" move.

Joab,I know we're a little off topic here since this thread is about the next episode--but my personal opinion is that each racing team should use all the devices available to enhance their standing in the race.  In the last few seasons racers have demurred from using the u-turn or it's predecessor "the yield" because they did not want to incur any hard feelings.  It's a race, you're in it to win! Use whatever is available. And sometimes things have to change to keep things moving and interesting--like each team member doing an equal number of roadblocks.   :2cents:

Anyway, it's only speculation.

I know, i just don't like it when people play dirty. If you're good you'll be first anyway without having to slow down another team with the U-TURN.. i know you're talking about scenarios where you're in nearly last and wants to put teams further down.. but i'm now talking about if the U-TURN becomes compulsory for the first team reaching the U-TURN mat.. it will be.. pointless and unfair because you're making the top team who has a considerable lead use your U-TURN.. which maybe the team wants to save for future legs for a more strategic use?

I don't think they will force people to U-TURN.. :duno:

I do understand your point of view, Joab.  I know strategy wise it is better to get the last team out of the way. But the random selection adds an element of surprise and suspense that may not be available otherwise. 'Nuf said.  I guess we'll find out what the "blind u-turn" is on Sunday.  Can't wait.

Maybe the blind U-turn refers to doing both Detours blindfolded. Now that would add an interesting dynamic.

Phil: The U-Turn only shows up once in the race. In this U-Turn, the teams must drive blindfolded to the task. Once there, the blindfolds will remain while both team members saw a log in half.

When they finish that task, the team will once again drive blindfolded to the next Detour where they must walk on hot coals and still keep their blindfolds on.

Hi guys! Based on everything that the press released, even saying that there would be new twists even before this episode, I think of the following

First placer team experiencing dead last - that more or less must have been Margie/Luke, we see Luke struggle so much in the Roadblock, that must have been them, further, I think that the roadblock itself is a first come first served basis, that is why they suffer being last.

And the new twist is not actually new, rather somehow, a modified version of the u-turn where the first team who reaches the u turn marker is forced to make a mandatory u-turn of another, and that they must randomly pick only one team... I may be wrong and it would actually be like K/V u turning N/D in Season 12, or in TARAsia3, G/T u-turning AD/F not because they hate them, rather to gain time...

The new twist may actually be a new twist?... We'll all find out next week...

"It Was Like A Caravan Of Idiots" (Siberia) - Teams travel to Siberia, the show's first- ever visit, where a first place team quickly learns how it feels to be last, and when a new twist is revealed, one Team is left scrambling for their survival in the game, on THE AMAZING RACE 14

I think this refers to Tammy & Victor who were in first after leg 2 and are now in last place.

Teams did not arrive in Brasov until 0920 and they had the RAODBLOCK and DETOUR to contend with. With the exception of Brad/Victoria, they should finish at between noon and 4pm.

PitStop arrivals between noon and 4 pm mesh with Chateau's info from the last leg.

Blind U-Turn

While at the PitStop,  an unmarked envelope containing the identity (picture) of a team that must complete the U-Turn on the next leg was chosen. Teams must now race quicker in case they were blindly chosen as the ones to complete the U-Turn.

Is this official? A sudden thought came into my mind, i think only in the case when a U-TURN is unused (all teams chose not to utilise their U-TURN), then it will become a "blind" U-TURN, where teams will draw lots (marked envelop) to see who will complete the U-TURN for the next leg. :ascared

I may have to redo this.

I made a fundamental mistake and that is when getting time from Solar altitude you have to consider that the sun could be either going up or going down when it is shining form the angle determined.  Soo ....  That arrival time may well end up being on the other side of noon.  More analysis is in the works so stay tuned.

I saw that Kris & Mander completed the Detour at 10:38 am according to the Randy Jackson sized wristwatch on Kris.

Here's a guess that after unscrambling "Chekhov," teams find the Krasnoyarsk-based cruise ship bearing his name. This would get them to the river area before the detour options. Or if the roadblock is after the detour, this could be a pitstop possibility...

http://raytour.com/html/cruises/Krasnoyarsk_Dudinka.html
"The unique cruise Krasnoyarsk-Dudinka goes along the Yenisei river, one of the biggest rivers in the world. The tourists will know about the nature of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and visit the towns: Yeniseisk, Turukhansk, Igarka, Dudinka. Besides, there wilt be the so-called "green stops" where you will see the wild nature of Siberia. You will see the Angara river and the polar day, polar rainbow and tundra in full. "Anton Chekhov" - one of the most comfortable russian ships built in Austria in 1978. European quality service, every cabin with WC, shower, bath, air conditioning. Restaurant, bar, cinema, library, swimming pool, sauna. MS "A.Chekhov" was built in Korniburg, Austria in 1978."

Chateau,
I hate to state the obvious, but are you saying that with all the tasks once teams did in Brasov and the Bran area (which is 24 km away), any team was able to complete them before noon? The 630am train from Bucharest Nord did not arrive until 922am!

From your page:
"For many years the ship was traveling along the exotic route on Yenisey River in Siberia and starting 2004 it will be used on the most popular Russian cruise line Moscow – St. Petersburg."

Although, here's a 2007 article (http://www.departures.com/articles/russia-2007-were-off-to-see-gulag) that says the Anton Chekhov is transporting tourists to the old gulag camps, starting in Krasnoyarsk.

I have to think that the "blind" u-turn needs to be taken almost literally. I think it would be so insensitive of TPTB to call something blind when they have a deaf contestant, unless it actually refers to being "blinded". Perhaps the U-Turn team has to select a member to be blindfolded for the task, or even both although TARAsia is right that this would be really unfair for Luke and Margie. Are TPTB so insensitive as to introduce this term this season of all seasons? I guess only time will tell....

I think a little more information about Ovsyanka is warranted. A tour company gives this half-day tour as part of a 2 day tour of the Krasnoyarsk area:

Visiting the old authentic Ovsyanka village. Siberian izba, museum, church and library. Visiting observation place “Tsar Fish“.
Not much to say, your description just about covered it. Ovsyanka ("oatmeal") started out a settlement guarding the approach to Krasnoyarsk. The Tsar Fish (http://wikimapia.org/4843689/ru/%D0%9F%D0%B0%D0%BC%D1%8F%D1%82%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA-%D0%A6%D0%B0%D1%80%D1%8C-%D1%80%D1%8B%D0%B1%D0%B5), on a overlook east of the village, is a reference to the most famous work of favorite-son author Victor Astafiev.

65 writers gave their names to streets, lanes, passages in Irkutsk. For example, there are streets of Gorkii and Herzen, Goncharov and Dostoevskii, Chekhov

Or let us take A.P.Chekhov. He wrote about Irkutsk from his own experience. The memorial board on the house, along the street Furye, 1, reminds us of Chekhov’s staying on June 6, 1890 in the hotel "the Amur yard" to rest on the way to the Sakhalin island. The writer liked the city very much. ...

Can anyone decipher what Mark means in the cab? (Cheers to Puddin for helping me out with that video!)

Quote from: Mark
We're leaving/leading in first place with Jennifer and Kisha and Jodi and Christie. And everybody else actually got stuck back in the other airport.

"The other airport" suggests they're using different airports out of Moscow, not a surprise since Domodedovo, Sheremtyevo and Vnukovo alternate best flights to Krasnojarsk. But are Mark and Michael in a cab going from one Moscow airport to another, or have they already arrived in Krasnojarsk?

Answering this question may help us figure out:
> Whether it was dark when the lead teams get to Moscow
   > Whether Bran was an extended Pit Stop
      > The flights available from Bucharest to Krasnojarsk
         > The lead Mark/Michael have over the other teams
         > When/whether Victor/Tammy get saved by bunching
      > How long teams spend in Russia
         > Whether the Jaipur leg was one day or two
            > Are there likely to be stragglers going into Phuket
               > How many teams get to Phuket

:groan: I've looked at shots of "the other airport", but I'm going nowhere! I can rule out Sheremtyevo, but it has similarities to all of Bucharest, Domodedovo and Vnukovo...

There's the evidence of the Blind U-Turn. It's going to be interesting to find out what that means.

What if the team that gets Blind U-Turned has to U-Turn the very next team as well?

There isn't a 'Courtesy of' spot on the sticker either; I think it means that if a team uses it, they have to U-Turn the next team that reaches it.

That could be it, the teams behind the team that U-Turns all have to do the other Detour option "can the teams come together in time for a game changing twist.."

I do not think one team gets to U-Turn another.  I like the idea of multiple teams being U-Turned.  Maybe all the Teams are U-Turned and it is a slight advantage to stack wood after the shutter task ... or vice versa.

I think when the first team hits the U-Turn, that team must turn around and do both Detours and then passes the U-Turn down. That's one way it could be a "Blind U-Turn".

which would also explain the clue about a 1st place team knowing what it's like to be in last?

Neobie,

I have been in the Sheremetveyo Airport (16 years ago and I do not remember it much) and in Bucharest airport 7 months ago (which I do remember well), but never in Vnukovo airport. I think that the pictures fit Bucharest better.

I got confusing results by putting in one Moscow airport at a time, but when I entered "All of them" I got a different picture. There are 3 flights on thursdays from Sheremetyevo to Krasnojarsk. There are 2 flights from Domodedovo. There is even one from Vnukovo. Several of these are just after midnight, which would not be feasible for any team on Nov. 6 since teams have to get to Moscow first and I expect the earliest release to be around midnight if there is no Extended Pit Stop. On Friday Nov. 7 there were 2 flights from SVO, 2 from DME and 1 from VKO.

On Nov. 6 there is only one nonstop from OTP to Sheremeteveyo, but several to both SVO and DME and none to VKO. On Friday Nov. 7 I see no nonstops but an ample number of flight combinations to either SVO or DME, but not VKO.

So, the bottom line is that a cross-Moscow taxi ride is not impossible but it is unlikely. The more likely outcome is that the taxi ride is in Krasnojarsk or even Bucharest.

Since everybody is doing it I will make my guess for Blind U-Turning:

The Team that implements the U-turn designates who is U-Turned.

They do not post their own picture.  That is why it is 'blind'.

Maybe the "Blind U-turn" means every one has to do the other detour option, or maybe just some of the next clue envelopes contain the "Blind U-turn." It might just depend on which envelope they pull out of the clue box. Sort of like a lottery. You don't know you get it, till you open the clue.

"I've looked at shots of "the other airport", but I'm going nowhere! I can rule out Sheremtyevo, but it has similarities to all of Bucharest, Domodedovo and Vnukovo..." Neobie

I think all three shots are Bucharest. Here are a few I found.

I found this picture of a sculpture at the airport. Notice the Metal flashin on the corners of the columns.

I looks very similar to these to shots.

Finlay I found these dude at that airport

and I noticed the arrow over his head looks like this arrow from our pics.

I have found it (Eureka in Greece)! The word Beszallas does not tranlate into Romanian or Russian. There are only a few more possibilities for connecting airports. It does translate into Hungarian, and means "Embarkation" which is pretty close to the English "To Gates". That picture must be in Budapest as Hungarian is not used in airports outside of Transylvania or Hungary.

It occured to me that maybe we are looking at a Brasov aiport, but the closest airport to Brasov is Bucharest. Also, this does not look like a Brasov train station. That leads me ot the conclusion that we are looking at the Budapest airport. One of the options from Bucharest to Moscow-Domodedovo connects through Budapest. Those flights on NOv. 7 only are MA857 OTP BUD 0615 0630 (Budapest is one hour behind Bucharest; it's not a 15 minute flight) to MA104 BUD DME 0850 1320. That would allow teams to connect at DME to S7 071 DME KJA 2220 0645 or to take a taxi ride across Moscow to Vnukovo airport (UT571 2040 0600) or Sheremetyevo airport (SU779 2055 0540) to get there up to one hour earlier.

Slowhatch, there is one flight out of Banaesa to Vienna which connects there to Moscow-DME. I actually see that the 930am flight listed in my recent Timelines posting is from Baneasa and not Otopeni airport in Bucharest(I missed that until you raised this issue). That is the second of 3 flight combinations that get to SVO or second of two to DME.

Although it is possible, I do not conisder it likely that any teams went to Banaesa. It is a considerably smaller airport.

With the blind u-turn being shown so much, in promos, in commercials, not even reaching the real episode this sunday, I'm 75% sure that it's an elimination leg.  :'(

I also guess that someone's surely u-turned.  :yess:  We just have to figure it out by the spoilers...

99.9% sure a team WILL be eliminated! 100% sure per clues that a team is Blind U-Turned. << how ever that works  :groan:

This shot was taken between 8:20 and 8:40 am (assumes November 8th).

Probably an hours of operation delay and the Roadblock is the first task of the leg.

I have a few comments to make:

- I do think that this shot was taken early in the morning, but it could have been shot before any teams had even arrived in Siberia, for promotional purposes/added shots.  Later, all of the shots of teams in the carts are from a camera attached to the front of the cart looking back at them.  So this time does not necessarily mean that is when they performed the roadblock.

- In fact, I was trying also to determine if the roadblock or detour comes first by looking at the sky.  In some shots of the roadblock with Luke in the cart you can see little breaks of sky, and during the detour shots everything looks cloudy with no breaks.  Maybe the roadblock is later in the day when the sun tried to break through a little bit?

- Also in the cab ride where Mark/Michael say they have a lead, it is dark.  But both the roadblock & detour have plenty of light, so I think it is very possible that the other teams catch up to the other three, taking away their lead.

- I agree that in the commercial it sounds like "WHO got u-turned", but if not mistaken it sounds very much like Mark's voice to me.  In which case Mike pointing behind him could very well be Amanda & Kris.  Considering Mel & Mike's entire woodpile tumbling to the ground I would not be surprised if they switched detours at that moment.

Looking at it, it just looks like if somebody gets U-Turned, they won't know who did it to them.

- Definitely only room on that sign for one big picture.  I think that the team can pick whomever they want, but since they don't have to post their picture (so no one knows who did it to them) it is "blind".   I didn't look it up, but if I remember correctly, no one used the U-turn on anyone last season, right?  No one wanted to hurt feelings or have karma to play itself out, so I bet the producers thought it might get used if no one knows who did it.  However I'm sure then teams will start speculating conspiracy theories...

- Notice we have no shots of either Amanda or Kris performing the roadblock.  Maybe on purpose?

Michael,
Of course you don't specify where you want Tammy and Victor to go. It's not nice to root against a team by rooting for them. Surely the reality TV gods will see through your strategy and make your mocking wish for Tammy and Victor really come true in a good way.

I think the same way with Nick and Starr... It doesn't really work.

Since it is such a BLIND u-turn could Margie and Luke U-turn Cara and Jamie or the other way around?....
Maybe not.

Does CBS just like to mess with group?  You're headed one way and then you get different evidence and start thinking something else.  In the end, it does make watching TAR more entertaining.

Agreed.  Here I thought Christie & Jodi might be eliminated this leg.  But those shots of them at the blind U-turn surely do throw off that suspicion!  What is that at Jodi's feetat the u-turn?  It looks maybe like the pictures of the other teams, maybe they are trying to decide who to u-turn.
Also in the wood-stacking shots with Christie/Jodi it doesn't look like any of the stacks behind them have been completed or even started.

I'm starting to think Jaime & Cara might be the team who gets U-Turned, just based on Jaime's panic when their wall falls down.  And I also fear it might be Christie & Jodi who U-Turn them after the reveal in the episode three Insider videos that Jaime & Cara don't like them.

If they show the Christie/Jodi and Jaime/Cara tension at the start of next leg, then we can safely assume that there will be U-Turn-involved drama between the two.

I don't know about that.  They showed absolutely no tension between Shana & Jennifer and Lorena & Jason in TAR12, but the former still U-Turned the latter.

Maybe the Blind U-Turn is like a version of the Fast Forward.  The first Team to arrive at the bU-Turn effectively U-Turns everyone behind them.

Okay a newbie here, so be nice please...LOL
My take on this week...the blind u-turn, is simply a u-turn and the "blind" part is you don't know who u-turned you.  I think since C/J, M/M, and L/J are ahead of the others, one of them uses the u-turn on another.  C/J uses it on M/M.  Mel & Mike and Amanda & Kris simply switch tasks because their piles keep falling.  Since we have no further evidence of Amanda & Kris, I think they are the ones to be eliminated.
But then again Lakisha & Jen aren't shown in any of the promos doing the detour yet, maybe CBS is holding out on us, so it could be them that are u-turned and eliminated.
Any thoughts, comments?

You can check out the latest timeline update here (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17791.msg381218.html#msg381218) littlewop. It looks like Neobie might have the lead teams 65 minutes ahead of the rest of the pack.
I'm not sure who U-Turns who but my guess would be one of the female teams use the U-Turn and the team that is U-Turned will be the team eliminated...sadly  :(

I kind of eliminated Mark & Michael because there were some rumors that they might've made a plane to Guillin, China.  Besides, they're rumored to be in the same group as Christie & Jodi and LaKisha & Jen, which is apparently the first group.

Now that I think of it, that makes LaKisha & Jen an unlikely team to be eliminated as well.  So I'm now going with Amanda & Kris, since they're apparently in the second group and the others in the second group all make it farther than Siberia.

BTW, I don't really want Amanda & Kris to go either, but I either like or am neutral on all the teams left (even Tammy & Victor), so it's hard to pick a team I really want to see go home.  That's a switch for me -- normally there's at least one team I can't wait to see go home!

Are we sure someone's getting eliminated?  With two Siberia legs, I'm pretty sure this leg will actually be an NEL, with next week being capped off with an elimination.

If someone does get eliminated, though, then yeah, I'll say Amanda & Kris.  Or Kisha & Jen, since neither had any evidence of a sighting beyond Siberia.  I'd also throw in Christie & Jodi, but they seem to be in first on this leg.

By far the best episode of the amazing race!! WOOHOO!
I agree, due to two things: the surprising winners and the equally-surprising losers!

I am shocked.  Just . . . shocked.  With two legs in Siberia, I really figured that one would be a non-elimination leg.  But when Amanda & Kris gave their confessional how sure of themselves they were (being young and fit and all that), I had a feeling that this leg might be an elimination leg.  And then, Margie & Luke got worried about how strong and fast Kris was, and I had a feeling that they'd get U-Turned.  Finally, Amanda & Kris bitched about getting U-Turned, and I knew they were toast.

And my thoughts?  Good.  I liked them okay, but they really were the last generic team left.  So now that we've got seven really unique teams left in the race, I'm definitely going to be happy with whomever takes the big prize in the end.

Oh, and Christie & Jodi winning the leg?  FINE BY ME!  They really earned it!  Kisha & Jen would've had Kisha not botched the Roadblock and then missed the entrance to the theater.  This is the first time since All-Stars that two women's teams have taken the top two spots on a leg (as Dustin & Kandice and Charla & Mirna had three one-two finishes)!  Excellent episode, indeed!

And yes, Poo.  The women's teams did do well this week (Jaime & Cara's Detour struggle notwithstanding).  Really amazing that they all made it through four legs unscathed!  But I think that's as far as they're going before the first one takes a hit.

Okay.  Team analysis:

Christie & Jodi: Well-earned victory, indeed.  They thought smart in their Detour choice and stayed calm despite Christie's Roadblock struggle.  They were also smart to look up flights ahead of time and got ahead because of it.  I enjoyed seeing them own this leg, and I hope it's the start of them turning their performances around.

Kisha & Jen: Another really solid leg after last week's great leg.  They did just as well as Christie & Jodi save for Kisha's Roadblock brain fart.  I think if they'd just run to the right entrance of the theater, they'd have won the leg, for sure.

Tammy & Victor: Nice recovery this week.  They made good time with the Detour, Victor did well with the Roadblock, and they made up for their near-elimination the greatest of ease.  Congratulations to them.  I actually liked Victor a lot better this week, too.

Margie & Luke: Good job at the Detour, and it was smart to U-Turn Amanda & Kris since, as they said, they are strong and threatening (especially Kris).  Luke really had trouble with that Roadblock, but good on him to try writing down different combinations of letters.  But I hope they don't become the villain team next week.

Jaime & Cara: Jaime really panicked at the Detour when their wall started to fall, but good on Cara for staying as calm as she could, and keeping Jaime from going over the top.  But girls, please stop the "no need for boys!" thing.  It was cute in your Insider videos, but it could get old here.

Mel & Mike: Lowest finish so far, and all because of a.) messing up at the Stack Detour and b.) messing up at finding the delivery location of the Construct Detour.  Mel cleaned up at the Roadblock, though, so of the bottom three teams, they deserved to finish ahead of all of them.

Mark & Michael: They could've easily nailed a place in the top three if they'd just started over with the stacking or just not messed it up.  Switching Detours slowed them down, and failing to find the house slowed them down even more.  Michael also failed to pay close enough attention at the Roadblock, but good job figuring out the answer right away upon getting all seven letters.  I'm sure losing all their money will hurt them going forward, though.  They're very lucky Amanda & Kris got U-Turned, or they would've been toast.

Amanda & Kris: Switching Detours was the catalyst for their demise.  Not finding the house location in time made things worse for them.  Getting U-Turned by Margie & Luke was the clincher.  I'm okay with this ending, though.  They were a strong, solid team, but also very, very, very generic, and, to be honest, kind of boring.  So I'm not sad to see them go.

Oh, and I'd have probably done Stack for the Detour, but wouldn't have been opposed to doing Construct, either.

So . . . after episode four:

LOVE: Christie/Jodi, Kisha/Jen, Tammy/Victor, Margie/Luke, Jaime/Cara, Mel/Mike, Mark/Michael
LIKE: No one
NEUTRAL: No one
DISLIKE: No one
HATE: No one

Oh, my God!  What a great season, indeed!  For me, only loves are left!

Did the demonstration stacks use cheats? In this photo (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race/photos/photos.php?v=24325&s=7&p=1) you can see "wedge sticks" against the demonstration piles, using the method explained on this page (http://www.woodheat.org/firewood/stacking.htm).

Christie and Jodi - Wow, I never really expected them to come in first but they came from the back and just surprised us! Four episodes now, four different teams coming in first! Now that's what I call awesome. =)

Kisha and Jen - That was a waste, missing the entrance to the theatre. First at the Roadblock, first at the Detour. But that's alright, I'd rather have Christie and Jodi come in first. They worked really well together this episode I must say, and they've been doing well these two legs.

Tammy and Victor - Great recovery, I just love to see them nice to each other and all. Love how they worked so well together at the Detour and just beat everyone else on the second flight. And I thought it was funny when Victor was so eagerly saying at the U-turn, "not our fault, not our fault!" that was cute, lol.

Margie and Luke - They're consistent, fourth place three legs in a row. I wish they hadn't used the U-turn though. Sure, they got rid of a thread, but I always believe that those who use the U-turn will probably not win, hee. They didn't really need to use it in my opinion, they were quite ahead, and if they hadn't used it, Michael and Mark, my least favourite team, could have gone home!

Cara and Jaime - LOL at the Roadblock! Jaime simply assembled those letters, the person told her it was correct, and was she SHOCKED. I just LOVED her expression and how she was cheering over there with Cara asking her to hurry up lol. Love this team!

Mel and Mike - Pity they were walking round in circles, they could've done better. And I thought it was funny that they referred to Mark/Michael as "the little guy". That was really cute! Lol.

Mark and Michael - That was such a missed opportunity for them. First flight, leading, and all of a sudden fell almost to last place. They were lucky that Amanda and Kris were U-turned, otherwise they might have been the ones gone, what with them having problems with paying their cabbie.

Amanda and Kris - That. Must. Really. Suck. I mean, it's just so hard, struggling with the first Detour, changing tasks, struggling again looking for the house, when they were finally done they realised they were U-turned, and had to go back to the difficult task they abandoned in the first place. Sigh, I just felt so sad, and so bad for them! Yet they persevered all the way. Why must my favourite team U-turn the other favourite team! Now I'm reminded of TAR 12 when Lorena and Jason went out the same way... I'll really miss Amanda and Kris, they were so sweet =(

I didn't find any of their behavior bad or annoying this leg, Ashe! Had I been in their shoes and gotten U-turned the same way, I know I would've reacted more negatively than that. They just accepted it with minimal squabbling, which only speaks well of them. :'(

And I was very annoyed that CBS continued to make it look like Amanda was being a wimpy, whiny weakling. Many other teams have worked similarly at tasks like the Stack Detour (one grabs a piece of wood, the other stacks), and they weren't edited to look as though one teammate wasn't pulling their weight. (:;)

I think its easy to sit on your chair at home and judge the teams when really, we don't know what Kris and Amanda's strategy was. I mean come on........ if a challenge calls for strength then it makes sense for the obvious to use his strength, whos going to get through the challenge faster. Amanda rocked last weeks Roadblock, that is where she shined. Now that they are gone we might never know what else Amanda was capable of.

Here are my rankings of the teams after this leg:

Christie & Jodi -- wow!  First place this leg, and it was well-earned!  They were right to go to the Internet cafe to get flight information and things only went well for them from there!

LaKisha & Jen -- another fine job from them, but they could've done better with the Roadblock.  Still, a fine job from them!

Tammy & Victor -- much better this leg!  Nice recovery from the disaster of the previous leg!  Did well with the Detour and Roadblock!  They regained my affection!

Margie & Luke -- I can see the strategy behind the U-Turn.  They hadn't been allied with Amanda & Kris, and the dating couple was stronger than Mel & Mike.  Still, it was sad to see them use it on the dating couple.

Jamie & Cara -- a very good job, even when some of the wall went down.  And it was real funny to see them pretend to be Lufthansa travel agents!

Mel & Mike -- didn't do so well because you switched Detours and got lost at the Construct Detour.  But you still did a decent job.

Mark & Michael -- wow, you guys really need help both with your navigational skills and with your cluelessness!  You got lost on the way to the Detour, you switched Detours and had all kinds of trouble with the Construct one, and finally you ran out of money!  You were lucky Amanda & Kris got the U-Turn, or you might've been toast!

Philiminated:  Amanda & Kris.  Okay, so you weren't the most interesting team, but you didn't fight.  Still, it was sad to see you go home.

Love:  Cara & Jamie, Tammy & Victor
Like:  Christie & Jodi, LaKisha & Jen, Margie & Luke and Mel & Mike.
Neutral:  Mark & Michael

Let's look at past Yields and U-TURNs -

When Colin and Christie got Yielded, they got angry for the next few legs with Chip and Kim and wanted to beat them in EVERYTHING.

When Ron and Kelly got Yielded, they drew on Rob and Amber's face.

When Weaver Family got Yielded, they called the Paolos and Linz names and it wasn't very nice.

When Danielle and Dani got Yielded, they cried and broke down.

When MoJo got Yielded, they became very aggressive about it and flipped off BJ and Tyler.

When Lyn and Karlyn got Yielded, Karlyn flipped off Dustin and Kandice.

When Eric and Danielle got Yielded by Dustin and Kandice and Oswald and Danny, you knew they did alot of trash talking and called them some really nasty names.

From past history shows, only Lorena and Jason managed to take their U-TURN with a stride and continue to race well and in peace with each other. A zillion other teams behaved 18409328 times worst than Amanda and Kris. Now, where did the "bitching" and the "shady" part from Amanda and Kris came from? I didn't see it?

It's a game, but when you're tired and get to the next clue box, the last thing you want to see is your picture on the sign knowing that you have to wait or you have to do the other detour. It can be very deflating to see you've been Yielded or U-Turned. As we've seen, the Yield or U-Turn can be the death knell, especially in Lorena & Jason's and Amanda & Kris' case. The others? Teams have recovered to come back, especially in Team Alabama's case.

I've talked to Lyn and she now takes it in stride. She says Karlyn is still bitter about the Yield.

Yakc's chart for the latest episode (http://homepage.mac.com/yakc/tv/tar14.html#leg4) and confirms, in graphic form, what we saw last night: that the RB made little difference, that most of the flight advantage was gobbled up by HoO, and that changing Detours was the killer.

Lyn and Karlyn can think what they choose, but the cold fact is that they survived that YIELD in Morocco and although Dustin/Kandice just barely survived that episode they were too far back to catch up the next leg in Barcelona. Editing makes it appear that it was bad karma from the YIELD catching up with Dustin/Kandice but in reality it was just lack of attention to various markers along the road to the olive grinding presses.

Now, where did the "bitching" and the "shady" part from Amanda and Kris came from? I didn't see it?
They both called it "shady" the moment they saw they'd been U-Turned, and then called all the other teams (probably because they didn't know the exact culprits) "conniving," and then thought they were entitled to not being U-Turned because they'd been nice to everyone.  Had they taken that as flattery for their abilities like Lorena & Jason did, I'd have had more respect for them in that instant.

But you know what?  I'll just say one more thing below this sentence, and then you can all return to your Amanda & Kris tongue-bathing.

Oh, whatever.  I did like them a lot, in spite of Amanda's "useless team member" edit, but they were the team I liked the least and was interested in the least, so I'm glad they hit the bricks this week.

This is off-topic. But Dustin and Kandice got pawned by bad karma for all you know for the leg they used their Yield on the Lyns. :funny:

And they lost to Eric and Danielle for Yielding them and buying a Yield on them too. Bad karma as well. Karma bites best. :funny: :yess:

- I do think that this shot was taken early in the morning, but it could have been shot before any teams had even arrived in Siberia, for promotional purposes/added shots.  Later, all of the shots of teams in the carts are from a camera attached to the front of the cart looking back at them.  So this time does not necessarily mean that is when they performed the roadblock.
Nicely done.  We now know the dam opened at 0830 and the RB was last. Even the demonstration shoes matched the promo shoes.
