One of the highlights of our Vietnam trip was an overnight cruise in Halong Bay on the Lagoon Explorer. Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage site with over two thousand amazing limestone islands - just like in Guilin, China. The place is certainly not off the beaten path - its PACKED with tourists and tour boats. We picked this one after extensive research because it only has four cabins. The cabins are air conditioned and each has a private bathroom. The food was also great - the two lunches and one dinner were all epic events. We had a great time with the two other couples. They were from Hong Kong and London and our age and simliar backgrounds. In the short time we were on the boat, we somehow drank eight bottles of white wine (plus other drinks). The crew seemed dismayed at our ability to drink! If you are considering Halong Bay, we would highly recommend Handspan travel and the Lagoon Explorer.

Am I the only one who thinks the city caps look like models? ??? Anyway, very pretty pictures, but so far...irrelevant.
Its called Tilt-shift miniature faking - its a photoshop technique to make scenes look like models. It call also be done using special tilt shift lenses. Its kind of a special effect thats in vogue right now - I'm not sure why they did it - it really looks fake in this context.

Joab, I am not disputing your indentification of the terraced fields (rice patties) as in China. I do have a question. Isn't that technique used quite extensively in Indonesia also?

Except TAR has never been to Indonesia and all the screencaps sure seem to be past seasons and then we have the CBS map/route so..

Well as I said, I wasn't disputing his identification. Also I should have said that my question wasn't TAR related. Since Joab is in Singapore, it was an honest question on farming techniques in Indonesia. I never meant to imply the question was TAR related.

If you've been to China and Indonesia.. one look and you'll know it's China and not Indonesia. Is it a good explaination enough? :duno:
The rice patties in Indonesia doesn't look like those in the screencaps.

puddin, that could be it. Or it could be on the Li River near Guilin China. I was on a small boat trip a little south of Guilin between Yangshuo and Xingping 16 years ago. I have some some current photos of boats on the Li River. Some are easily the size you indicated. Thank you TexasLady and Peach for your guidance in how to post photos. I used to know but it's been a long time. The thing I forgot was use of the Additional Options box to replace the (http://) method which wasn't working for me.

Apskip, when you have the reply window open, look under Additional Options and you will see the "attach files" option on the left.

The distinct lack of karst in the background disturbs me. If they're going for "epic scenery", surely Guilin/Yangshuo could offer more dramatic landscape than that?
On first view I thought it was something like the Mississippi! *no offence to Mississippi!* Guilin is just not "famous" for boats on a river.

What is karst please? ???
Title: Re: The not so Amazing Intro flash/screen caps let down ..

Karst topography is a type of surface profile that results from the weathering and dissolution soluble minerals. Usually it means limestons and dolomites. Do a google seach for karst topography and you get a lot of links and pictures. Those islands in Thailand where The Man with the Golden Gun was filmed are karst. There are areas in China that are famous for the karst. You end up with a bunch of isolated rock outcrops......sort of like christmas trees.....lots of pointed little mountains/hills

Peach, what Dr. Rox has said is true, but you may want a more basic explanation (and then again maybe not but you are about to get one). In the Guilin area karst is limestone formations where the enough limestone has dissolved by weathering/erpsion over many centuries to create the weird shapes (some phallic like the Iao Valley Needle on Maui; maybe we will see that in the finale although I hope they go with better sights).
