So do I, I don't remember any viewer increase thanks to a Golf overrun....  Football, hell yes, basketball good for a little.  Golf, I will shot myself.

And and go nascar, God, I want to see Stewart win this at some point.  Poor fat bastard.

This is not an issue. PGA Tour will be pushed to Golf Channel if it runs long. The PGA Tour does not have the ratings clout as the NFL. No overruns until the NCAA Tournament next month.

It appears that with all of the weather delays, Daytona 500 may not finish until after 8.

Well I did have a pit pass and I watched from the Daytona 500 Club....thats the 4 story building right next to the Gatorade Victory Lane, but I would still rather be here. It is much better on TV. I would encourage anyone and everyone to go at least once. It is one of those events, one must experience in life like Mardi Gras, NewYears inTime Square, etc.

That was the Masters.  As mentioned, the PGA isn't that popular compared to the NFL and College Hoops.  However, The Masters is a big deal.  It's the golf equivalent of Wimbeldon, or the World Series of Poker.

Kogs is right I just checked, they did have a roughly 30 minute overrun on Feb 18, 2007 for Golf.
Title: Re: Episode 1 open discussion/updates/commentary
Post by: mswood on February 15, 2009, 04:41:46 PM
And more importantly it depressed the ratings (I actually remember this, but did double check) the ratings for the full CBS lineup that night as each show performed at lower then normal levels.

So to hell with that.  I am already obsessive enough about the ratings, now I get to worry about that possibility all night.

Might have been due to The Masters, but not for the Pebble Beach. Trust me, last week's Buick Invitational almost ran to 7 p.m. ET, but CBS was not going to dump 60 Minutes for golf. It planned to throw it to Golf Channel and will do that again this week if it happens.

Teams rip clues open.
Make your way to Switzerland.
Two flights.
Lufthanza, or Air France.
Different connecting cities.

Luke, joyfully signs "We're on The Amazing Race!"

Teams take trains from their connecting cities to Lukarno.
Someone has never been to a train station.
The Zurich train is moving with the first group.
Snowy Switzerland Snowcap Peaks.
(Luke is trying to sign that 10 times fast. It's a fingertwister. His fingers fall off.)
The Racers are bunched all in a car.
One of the teams missed the train somehow, Preston/Jennifer. They're already bitching at each other.
Please, someone, take a frying pan and shut his yap with it!

Christie/Jodi find a lady in a car who is going to Lukarno. They're gonna let her take them there.
But she's like 107 years old, so they may fall behind.

Phil: Race on foot to the Church of San Antonio. Sign the register, and receive message from the Priest.
Luke grabs Margie and drags her almost like a Great Dane dragging its owner through the square.

First, Christie/Jodi, 7:15 departure.
Tammy/Victor, 7:15 am also
Luke/Margie made the first group, barely.

Brad/Victoria first on 2nd group , 7:30 departure
Mel/Mike, gasping for air, last to make the 7:30

There is a 7:45 departure. Kisha/Jen, Amanda/Kris, and the winded Steve/Linda and Preston/Jennifer.
Social hour, the teams meet each other and bed down.
EWW! Mosquitos! Who knew?

Running through town, Steve gave Linda a few good swift verbal kicks in the butt.
She's struggling, can't breathe.
Linda is mad at Steve for yelling at her the whole way through Lukarno.
She boo-hoos her way into the night. Boo. Hoo.

COMMERCIAL.

Victor performs Roadblock! That was wow and amazing. Luke is jumping! I think Luke is really cute and he really communicates well with his mom.

Christie and Jodi reached RB in 6th. Mark or Michael does RB. Can't differentiate them. Christie and Jodi are funny. Amanda and Kris is 7th, Cara and Jaime 8th. Mark and Michael to the train now.

Jennifer and Preston 9th at RB. Preston does it.

Christie and Jodi contemplates. They are very worried about it.

LUKE JUMPS!!!!!!!!!!!

Locarno. Morning.

Teams in the first group take their CLUEs from the Priest.
It's a picture.
A picture of a dam.
Phil: Teams will race to the Vercazsa Dam for their next clue.

7:30 and the second group takes their pictures and asks around.
Anybody know what this is??
Teams get information and head off in taxis, and on foot.
Valle Verazca! Mas importante!
Guess they speak many languages there. Mirnish is coming, I can feel it.

Mark/Michael, CLUE: Who has nerves of steel?
Phil: A bungee jump off the bridge of the dam.
Luke is gonna do it! Yay!
He'll scream so loud his fingers will be sore for days!

Luke, Victor get ready to jump.
From the platform, you can see forever.
We're treated to a lengthy Victor jump and his experience.
Victor: Thank you, God!

T/V, CLUE: Take a train to Interlachen.
Phil: Find Kleine Rugen Wiese for the next clue.

CHRISTIE OR JODI JUMPS! She did it. WOW. Love Christie and Jodi! They are so supportive.

Tammy and Victor at the train station!
Mark and Michael reached!
Margie and Luke reached!
Mel and Mike reached!

All of them met at the airport!! Tammy and Victor shares info with everyone!! That's NICE.

We're back at the dam. KRIS JUMPS IN 9TH. KAIME JUMPS. PRESTON JUMPS. KISHA JUMPS. STEVE JUMPS IN LAST. THE JUMP TAKES 7MINS.

Mark/Michael in 2nd, get train CLUE for Interlachen.
Other teams, some happy to jump, some not so happy.
Christie/Jodi, neither wants to jump very much. Fear of heights, apparently.
Luke is scared. He goes head over heels and shrieks. Mom hugs an older racer for comfort.
Afterward, Luke: That was so cool! I loved it!
The Christie/Jodi team isn't looking forward to this at all.
Steve/Linda and Kisha/Jen bringing up the rear, arrive and choose who'll jump.
Who has nerves of steel?
Linda: You do.
Steve: Gotta pick it up! We're last again!

Jodi takes a deep breath and falls forward.
She grimaces.
Thank god that is over! Bring me up!
They leave in 6th.

Tammy/Victor get to the train station and ask which train goes to Interlaken.
They find out one leaves in 5 minutes.
Tammy/Victor disappointed to see Mark/Michael and Mel/Mike arrive.
But they fake it and the three teams get on the train together.
Old dude, "It's not that we don't trust you. It's just that we don't trust you." ::whatevia::

Jen jumps at 9:07 am. Steve jumps at 9:14.
Note the addition of the times, apparently foreshadowing the bang-bang Philimination of one team or the other.

FOUR lead teams: DETOUR. Cut the cheese.
Tammy/Vic, Mel/Mike, Mark/Michael, Margie/Luke
Choose a pair of local cheese racks. Transport 200 pounds of cheese from an aging shed to the bottom of the hill, stacked, for the next clue.
It's one helluva steep hill!

Holy crap. The hill is slicker'n owl****, and they have to load the cheese on these bizarre head-first contraptions.
They then have to side-step down the hill and try not to let the cheese get unbalanced.
Or it falls off.
As cheese falls off, it rolls at 100 miles an hour down the hill.
::giggles::

Luke's tossed his contraption, seeing the other guy's contraption that broke.
They're carrying it now, by hand.
Dad slides ass-first down the hill with a big roll of cheese in his lap.

Unfortunately when he gets near the bottom of the hill, it's like crawling because it's not steep enough to slide.

First to finish, Margie/Luke, CLUE: Take your taxi to the pitstop.
Phil: Yodelers will lead them to the pitstop. Last team to check in WILL BE PHILIMINATED!

GO MARGIE & LUKE......

Two of the other 3 lead teams are finishing.
Gaypop/Gaykid are still on the hill, though, as other teams arrivve.
The top 9 teams are now on the hill or headed to the pitstop.
Kisha/Jen made up some time.
Steve/Linda arrive in 10th.
Steve is complaining already to Linda.
Linda can't even make it up the hill. She does a faceplant on the way up.
Steve: Honey, you have to make it up.
Steve falls.
Steve: LINDA! UUUGGGGHHHH!

Phil: Mark/Michael, team #3, congratulations.
Phil: Why was it so important for you, Luke, to be on the Race?
Luke, Signing: Because Deaf people can do it. I just want to show people that the Deaf can do everything.

Linda's gonna take 1 roll. Steve's gonna take 3. Smartly, they slide backwards down the hill, guiding the contraption down the hill.
Steve: Imma show 'em how to do it.
Kris grabs one on each shoulder and does them like sacks of potatoes.
Jennifer and Preston are arguing, not helping.

Amanda/Kris finish the task in 5th.
At the bottom .. Steve: We outsmarted every one of 'em.
Linda: YOU did.
Steve: WE did.
They're done.

Phil: Mel/Mike, you're team #4.

Brad/Victoria finish.

Phil: Amanda/Kris, you are team #5.

The theme! The text! The maps (wait, nevermind)! Preston & Jennifer getting eliminated! Margie & Luke coming in first! Phil signing! Phil's eyebrows! The yodelers at the pit stop! The cheese and the roadblock!

Hands down, the best season opener ever.

I love the new change about this season. Everything is so fast paced and they edited everything boring that we didn't need to see. For example, last season we were even shown little details on teams rushing for flights, which i think doesn't matter in the end because we're going know anyway. This season the edit is more balanced.. with the exception of Tammy and Victor and Margie and Luke (because they are leading) for now.. i think everyone else had a fair share of their screentime.

Last season however, the spoilt final 6 was all about episode 1. There was hardly Aja/Ty, Anthony and Stefenie and Mark and Bill..

And another change i like.. was the splitting of screens up into 2. Seems like watching a JAMES BOND movie!!!!!

I have to agree. It feels like an actual race and not just a fight for seats on an airplane.

Well, well, well, I didn't expect Linda & Steve to stick around this time!  But I doubt they'll stick around another leg -- they're probably gone next leg.

I'm not upset to see Jennifer & Preston go.  More than one leg watching that team and I might be tempted to (figuratively) shoot myself like I had to do with Tara & Wil, Jonathan & Victoria and Nathan & Jennifer.

I already like Tammy & Victor and Margie & Luke, and I think I'll like Cara & Jamie -- unless either Tammy & Victor or Cara & Jamie become annoying.

Loved the premiere! Really liking the new music, graphics, etc. I'm actually sad to see Preston & Jennifer go.

Glad to see more positivity about the episode on this board. I checked one of the other boards and I was surprised to see so much negativity. I'm convinced they're just trying to make Survivor or TARA sound better than they actually are (don't get me wrong, I love those shows too, but they'll always pale in comparison to me against the original greatness that is TAR).

Wow, I'm loving TAR 14 already! It seems so fast-paced but that's good, then we don't have to watch boring airport issues. Also, the editting ain't too obvious isn't it? Other than Tammy and Victor and Margie and Luke who seem to be getting a little more screen time, the rest are all pretty even. That's good, doesn't make things so obvious.

Margie and Luke - To be honest, I didn't really expect them to do so well on the first leg before the show started. But when they cried at the pitstop, I almost cried too, I was really touched. I was so happy that they came in first, I think they communicate and work really well together! Hope they make the final five at least.

Tammy and Victor - I'm a little neutral towards this team now. I was starting to like them, until they tried to pull off some deceit or something at the train station? Didn't really catch what they said though. Will have to look at future episodes.

Mark and Michael - Hmm, can't really differentiate one from the other but they're alright for me. They seem pretty nice people for now.

Mel and Mike - Lol, it was funny how Dad was sliding down with the cheese. Neutral about them.

Amanda and Kris - Love them, they seem like a pretty sweet couple, and they did make up a lot of time at the Cheese task didn't they!

Brad and Victoria - I'm not sure I like them that much now, they seem a little scheming.

Cara and Jaime - Their introduction scared me a little, they kinda come across as b***hy lol. But I love how they accepted their 7th place, unlike Kelly and Christy last season who never seemed contented.

Kisha and Jen - They're nice, kinda like them now but they're invisible, no??

Steve and Linda - Didn't expect them to make it past leg 1. I actually feel really sorry for Linda, constantly being yelled at by Steve. =(

Christie and Jodi - Am I glad they made it! I'm starting to like them a lot now, they work well together, are nice to others, and are pretty smart. Hope they stick around!

Jennifer and Preston - It was a surprising first boot, they just don't look like a team that'll be out first. I wasn't sad about their elimination, but it was truly a pity, they were SO CLOSE omg, it must really suck. But oh well, never really rooted for them.

My current placings:
1. Margie and Luke
2. Amanda and Kris
3. Cara and Jaime
4. Christie and Jodi
5. Tammy and Victor
6. Brad and Victoria
7. Mark and Michael
8. Kisha and Jen
9. Linda and Steve
10. Mel and Mike

Everyone's really likeable for now.

Victor and Tammy is probably Nick and Starr 2.0, going to do whatever it takes to win the race, even if its being sneaky. Nice to seem them try to align with Cara & Jamie and Luke & Margie. Yeah they did try to mislead people on the train station by saying that the first train they were taking was a big gamble and hope no other teams followed them, prompting an angry response from Mel & Mike.

100% support for this team.

Let's do this in order
Opener vid: LOVE
Music: It'll take some time for me to love the remix
team dynamics: awesome
Outcome: completely unexpected (though it was a little like the earlier seasons with all the g/g teams in the back of the pack)
Margie & Luke: complete surprise (Phil hand signs: LOVE!)
Tammy & Victor: smart players
Mark & Michael: fun to watch
Mel & Mike: not enough footage to decide
Amanda & Kris: cute, but indifferent ftm
Brad & Victoria: fit and old villains? now THAT is new
Jaime & Cara: a little disappointed
Kisha & Jen: expected more
Steve & Linda: very creative, but sadly Linda will probably their downfall
Christie & Jodi: need to pay more attention, but pulled through when it mattered
Preston & Jennifer: sad to see them go, they could have been Johnathan & Victoria 2.0

Bungee jumping: just ok
Cheese: L-O-V-E!!!
Yodellers: that made Margie & Luke's victory even sweeter due to his handicap

Split screen = TOTAL SUSPENSE (love!)

Bold statement: could these be Season un6? To me it looks totally reversed (more family/friends than daters). Season 14 looks really original.

BONUS: kewl logo!

I also loved that all the airport stuff was skipped.  the real racing came in when they landed in Europe.  I loved the fact that they had to take the train a long way to another location and didn't just stay in one area for that leg.

Hey, Hooky.

I did not miss any of the airport drama. Just thinking back to TAR12 when one half of an episode involved booking tickets, getting in line, making phone calls, going back and forth between ticket agents, that was just unnecessary. Glad to see the show going back to basics. They can show the airport drama in the Insider clips. Leave the show to Racing.

I did miss some of it, but with a first episode you have to devote so much time for team intro's.

I do hope we get cash, and a little bit of airport drama (becuase its one place teams are often all together at), but...unless its a special case like the airport hell in All Stars, or the one time in Season 12.  But for the most part anything more then a few minutes isn't needed.

Post by: Ashe on February 16, 2009, 01:38:01 PM
My thoughts?

I thought the premiere was definitely very intense, but also kind of rushed. It seems that they've done away with the race to the airport and the race to get the first or second flight.

Well, other than that, I liked the tasks, as well as the twist in taking one of two different trains to Locarno.

My thoughts on the teams:

Margie & Luke: Cute dynamic and capable team. They ran a surprisingly excellent first leg, despite Luke's deafness. It was a well-earned win, and I loved Phil signing to Luke that they'd won the leg.

Tammy & Victor: Look like a force to be reckoned with, and they remind me somewhat of Henry & Bernie from TARA3. But . . . the fact that Victor pulled out the single most annoying facet of Nick's strategy from last season (from what I've heard, even some fans who liked him and Starr were annoyed by that one) right from the get-go, and managed to somehow be more obnoxious about it than Nick, is not a good sign. I like Tammy, and she seems like a smarter racer than Starr. I respect the team's apparent racing skill, but I'm worried that, over the long haul, Victor's going to bug me. The villains? Probably. They're already not fully trusted by some of the other teams.

Mark & Michael: Not much seen of them on the first leg, but so far, I like them. Their backgrounds as stuntmen will help them face any scary challenge. And they seem pretty funny, too.

Mel & Mike: Another pair of funny guys. And they might be the first father/son team I actually turn out to like. (Dennis & Andrew were kind of "meh" to me, and I hated Steve & Josh.) They ran a pretty good leg, too, but I have a feeling an overly-physical task will be their undoing.

Amanda & Kris: Amanda already starting out with the whining makes me think they'll not only not win, but they also won't be lasting very long. Or, if they do, then they just won't win. That's all I can really say about them right now.

Brad & Victoria: I guess it was a good idea to lie to Christie & Jodi to at least ensure that one team stays behind them. But let's hope they don't keep that up. That said, definitely the oldster team that'll last longer. They ran a decent leg and were the only team not to fall down at the cheese task.

Jaime & Cara: My favorite team in the race right now. Would've finished higher if not for that bad luck in finding a taxi. Still, they did decently with the cheese and notched a decent, seventh-place finish. I hope they can rebound next week.

Kisha & Jen: They look to be the next Monica & Sheree. Not much seen from them, but I guess they did decently enough on this leg. They could last a while.

Steve & Linda: I like Steve. I do. But Linda annoys me already. If you're gonna cry on the very first leg, and for the reason you did it, no less, then you have no place in the race. Good strategy in getting the cheese task done, I guess, but other than that, I hope this is the oldest team that lasts for the shorter amount of time, entirely because of Linda.

Christie & Jodi: I was really surprised at them from going from being the first team to get to the church thanks to that local who tipped them off about changing trains, to nearly being eliminated due to bad train info. Still, good job on them for actually pulling through when they needed to, in order to make up for all of that lost time, and I love that they only barely beat out Preston & Jennifer. And speaking of whom . . .

Preston & Jennifer: Glad they're gone. I've had enough young dating couples treating the race as couples therapy. They'd have gotten annoying to me, and very quickly. Jennifer was so damn useless, too, and that's probably what contributed to their elimination, more than anything. Good riddance to bad rubbish!  I'm actually more or less fine with everyone left now that they're gone.

Great premiere, if a little rushed, and a great cast so far! And my impressions are:

LOVE: Mel/Mike, Tammy/Victor, Jaime/Cara, Christie/Jodi, Brad/Victoria, Kisha/Jen, Margie/Luke, Mark/Michael
LIKE: Steve
NEUTRAL: Amanda/Kris
DISLIKE: Linda
HATE: No one (yet)

And also, it's interesting to see the different dynamics when gay family members are involved. Compare the cases of Duke/Lauren and Dennis/Andrew with Ken/Gerard, Margie/Luke (I read somewhere that he's gay too) and Mel/Mike. The former two struggled a lot and were eliminated early because they had bad dynamics (both teams said in their intros that they where racing in order to begin accepting their children coming out of the closet), whereas in the latter three, both team members were comfortable with each other and placed quite high. It's obvious that this moral support is vital for success in the Race. M&M and M&L will do well until a task hits their Achilles' Heel. (I deliberately let Susan/Patrick out because they were an exception, they had good teamwork, but were too focused on Romber).

I also read it one story that Luke was gay.  But since nothing else has mentioned that, I do wonder if they got their press material screwed up and it was about Mike.

As for Lauren & Duke, it did seem that at some point Duke really had a problem with it.  I never got that feeling from Dennis (though I am sure he had difficulties with it), it didn't seem to be an issue that they had.

I know, that my parents never let me know if my homosexuality bothered them (I am sure it was tough on them), and I get more of that vibe from Dennis.

I'm rooting for Mark and Michael or the Mother/Son team only because I like their dynamic together so far.

If you listen carefully as the teams read the clue about the cheese thing, it is never said that you had to use the carriers to bring the cheese down.  It only said that you had to pick out two carriers and take them to the top of the hill.  Teams just assumed that you had to use the carriers to bring the cheeses down.  But it was soon obvious that these carriers were made very flimsily and probably were expected to break.  TPTB wanted to see how much ingenuity teams would show.  Actually it was Steve who right at the start made a sled out of the carrier to slide three down the hill, while Linda slid down on her backside holding one cheese.  By using this maneuver they moved from 10th up to 6th but got lost and ended up at the mat as the 9th team.  I suppose it would have been alright to just rolls them down the hill, gather them up at the bottom and carry them over to the shed.  And if your aim was right, you might be able to rolls the wheels of cheese right down to the hut!

A lot of time must have been spent on this task, or Christie and Jodi were not that far behind since when they arrived only four stacks of four cheese were by the shed.  No other cheeses were by the wall by the other seven teams.

I pretty much agree with you on your thoughts about the teams.  But here's how I feel about them:

Love:  Tammy & Victor, Margie & Luke, Jamie & Cara and Mel & Mike.
Like:  Mark & Michael, Christie & Jodi, Brad & Victoria, Kisha & Jen and Steve.
Neutral:  Amanda & Kris
Dislike:  Linda
Hate:  I would've said Jennifer & Preston, but they're gone.  So no one -- yet.

I also read it one story that Luke was gay.  But since nothing else has mentioned that, I do wonder if they got their press material screwed up and it was about Mike.

The article I read said that apart from Mike and Mel, among the TAR14 racers there was also another gay male (whom we believe to be Luke), and a lesbian (who has not been identified)

They're used to pulling their luggage instead of wearing backpacks. I would think the backpack is more convenient, but I guess that's what they're used to.  :duno: :duno:

I have seen backpacks that can also be rolled, so perhaps they can choose when to carry them?

The velocity of the rolling cheese can be estimated using conservation of energy.  The change in elevation from the cheese shack at 718 meters to the bottom of the hill at 653 meters is 65 meters.  All of the potential energy converts to kinetic energy of motion.  The relationship is:

(3/4) * mass * velocity^2 = mass * gravitational acceleration * change of elevation

Solving for velocity:

velocity =  sqrt(1.3333 * gravitational acceleration * change of elevation)

Using 9.8 meters/sec^2 for the gravity we get a speed of 29 meters/sec or 65 mph!

:ascared That's enough to knock you off your feet. Guess they didn't have any manned cameras located directly at the bottom of the hill, and I hope the clue bearer took shelter behind the cabin each time a missile was launched....

Makes you wonder why there wasn't some form of a penalty for anyone who let go of their cheese, just for safety reasons...

Tsk-tsk, Chateau! Half-m-v-squared! (Oh God I'm turning into Apskip.)

That gives us 35.7ms^-1 (assuming no friction). Yikes!

Each cheese wheel weighs 22.7kg, which translates to 811kgms^-1 of momentum, which would send someone like Amanda (who says she weighs 45.6kg) flying at 11.9ms^-1 or 26.6mph in an inelastic collision... blahblah

No!

The formula takes into account the kinetic energy of rotation:  (1/2) I w^2

where I = (1/2) mr^2 is the moment of inertia of a cylinder and w is the angular velocity of rotation.

We also assume that the cheese rolls without slipping!   :wise

9.8 meters per second squared is an acceleration due to gravity, not gravity. Gravity (gravitational force) is measured in Newtons.  :)   but it is really just semantics

Opps, I missed the gravitational acceleration, sorry I butted in.

When I first saw the rolling cheese, two things came to my mind. Delta PE = Delta KE    and Delta p = F delta t and a very horrible philmination if it hit anyone....lol

ugh...I'm having flashbacks of Physics 101 all over again

Me too! But I love our science guys, just don't ask me any questions, lol!

I strongly suspect that teams were told not to push or roll their cheeses, but clearly as they began getting away from the racers production must have had to reconsider what was acceptable and what was not.

Phil said in his blog:

Quote
Speaking of unpredictable, Switzerland took us to a whole new level of mayhem. You know you're capturing classic television moments when all around you people are yelling out "watch out for the flying cheese." The locals lost it. The teams certainly lost it. And to be perfectly honest with you, no one in production knew what might happen next. Thank goodness for those fences or who knows where those cheese bombs might have ended up.

So my guess is that the first teams started out going on the clue rules only, but then production would be having to make decisions on the "roll", :lol3:

I believe teams weren't allowed to roll.. but since the cheese just rolled down on their own.. they can't do anything anyway.. or maybe the teams who had their cheese rolled down, had to carry another cheese down.. just that the edit didn't show? :duno:

Well it clearly shows that Luke/Margie both lost their first cheese wheels. They then go get them and stack them. So I dont think they were penalized at all.
