Title: Survivor Tocantins EP1: "Let’s Get Rid of the Weak Players Before We Even Start"
Post by: puddin on January 28, 2009, 01:57:33 AM
The 18th edition of the reality series begins with 16 castaways being stranded in the harsh interior of Brazil and already divided into two tribes. Before speaking a word to each other, the teams are each forced to eliminate one player from their tribe who will not go on with them to their camp.

FIRST TV GUIDE PART FROM JEFF! :yess:
Jeff Probst: It's going to be extremely hard on them because of the heat. Anytime we can keep the game changed up is good for us.
We're trying to set a tone this season right off the bat about the importance of first impressions and we've got an opening twist that is going to speak to that. This season is going to open up with about a four hour trek to their respective camps. But before they start on their trek we're going to ask them to vote one person out of each tribe and the words I'll use will speak to the notion that maybe they're out of the game, they're not sure. Somebody's going to be voted out of the tribe. They're going to think it's a bad thing, what's actually going to happen is the rest of the tribe takes the trek but they will get helicoptered to the camp. So they'll skip the whole trek, they will have about a four hour head start. We're going to leave plenty of supplies to start building camp, we're also going to leave a clue to the location of a hidden immunity idol. They're not going to have enough time to do both. So the choice is going to be: do I try to change the first impression by starting work on the camp and see if I can get back into the good graces or do I just stay selfish and look for that idol and try to save myself for the first Tribal Council? I think it's going to set the tone for this season that you have to be aware of the social integration that is going on at all times. Exile Island is desolate. It is a big sand dune. This year two people will go to Exile Island. The winning tribe will chose somebody from the losing tribe, that person will then chose somebody from the winning tribe. So there will always be two people out there. When they get out there they'll find two eggs, two choices. They'll have to figure out amongst themselves who gets which one. They break them open and inside one will be nothing, inside the other will be a note that says, "here's a clue to the location of the hidden immunity idol." Nobody except them will know it is back at their camp. Two, you also have power. You can decide to go back to your original tribe or you can mutiny and go back to the other tribe. So we're hoping to get some mutinies this season.
Also the challenge is explained in this summary from codayoda1221
I assume Jeff said that it happens at every exile, because he said "We are really hoping to see a few mutinies on exile island." The twists were revealed in about the first 5 minutes of the program. ETA: First challenge: Both tribes have two people stand behind at the stairs, the other 6 run through the dunes and into the river to grab planks. Once they bring the planks back and untie the knots, these are given to the two left behind where they figure out how to set it up and run up the steps to the top, where there is a maze with two handles that each tribe member holds and directs this string through, first duo to solve the maze raises their flag and gets immunity. Looked pretty even with the running but red had a slight edge. Sandy and Taj I believe were the duo doing the maze, and Erinn and someone else was doing the maze for black.

I am just loving the "mutiny" angle on this....Just think of the game changing moments a mutiny could make. The only question is is anyone glib enough to convinvce someone to mutiny and is the person who mutinies going to have an advantage by doing so? Very Very interesting twist

The mutiny twist is very interesting, but you need to be careful with your decision and make certain of two factors. First, you need to make certain that your decision has nothing to do with emotional attachments and everything to do with strategy -- Candice's first mistake. Second, you need to do it either at the right time or if you're the one on the outs. If you mutiny too early, you're backstabbing your tribe before you really need to do so -- Candice and Jonathan made that mistake. Remember the lessons these Cook Islands Survivors taught.

There has been talk of Candace being a first boot and I found this interesting. This was shot as always presumably after Tribal Council 1 thus the torches which Sucks has said and they have black stripes thus backing up Timbira first boot...(Although I have second-guesses) and then at 2:05-2:12 Jeff says "The girl that starts with C aint gonna like it" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UXBjLF3qu8. Could be candace after all?!

I know that it might not be but it says Timbira goes to tribal before this and saying C might have something to do with it as he says she wont be happy and it is said she might cause a fight or something! being "bitchy"

We will see. This is after the first tribal council straight after because the tribe torches are still there. It is a black torch stripe. And Fever has said this could mean a Timbira Tribal council for episode 1. It may not be to do with anything but we will see! I would laugh if she did go home

IIRC, Survivor 12 and 14 had EI on the first episode (Misty and Sylvia from Panama and Fiji, respectively, went there). Since 2007 (and CI), it's been the norm that there isn't an Exile Island on the first episode. Typically, there's only one task on the premiere, and it's usually a combined reward/immunity challenge. So with no solo reward challenge, they wouldn't send someone to exile. Of course, in the past there's a second combined challenge, where someone from the losing team could get sent to exile island. Earlier on, he or she was safe from Tribal (I believe), but recently, they would return the morning following Tribal.

Published on HollywoodChicago.com: movie reviews, movie interviews, movie news, DVD reviews, Blu-ray reviews, TV reviews, theater reviews (http://www.hollywoodchicago.com) TV Review: One of the Best Reality Shows Returns With ‘Survivor: Tocantins’ By BrianTT Created Feb 12 2009 - 10:53am
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 CHICAGO – The 18th installment of the show that really started it all with reality television, “Survivor [1],” debuts Thursday, February 12th, 2009 with the promise of another season of backstabbing, infighting, and immunity challenges.
With 16 new contestants, a physically demanding setting, and the best host in reality TV, “Survivor: Tocantins - The Brazilian Highlands” delivers exactly what fans expect and sets the stage for what should be another exciting installment of arguably the best reality show on television.
The sixteen contestants set to compete in Survivor: Tocantins - The Brazilian Highlands, when the eighteenth installment of the Emmy Award-winning reality series premieres Thursday, February 12 (8:00 - 9:00 PM ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Reviewing the 18th installment of anything that’s essentially the same can be a little frustrating. There’s no one coming to “Survivor: Tocantins - The Brazilian Highlands” saying “What’s this whole Survivor thing all about?” After 17 installments of tribal councils, immunity challenges, and the wisdom of Jeff Probst, audiences probably just want to know what’s different about this season?
First and foremost, the premiere makes it clear that life is going to be brutal in Brazil. The location is one of the most rugged and physically challenging in the history of the show. The 16 contestants this season are left stranded in the interior of Brazil, an area of the world with hundreds of square miles with no civilization and unbelievable heat.
After brief introductions to a few of the contestants this season including the competitive “Coach,” the ill Sierra, the over-the-top Sandy, and Spencer, the youngest player in the history of “Survivor,” the predetermined tribes are sent on a four-hour hike in temperatures well over a hundred degrees and rising. From the opening hike to an immunity challenge that would kill a lot of people in such hot conditions, it’s clear that the setting is going to play a major role this year.
Of course, the success or failure of any installment of “Survivor” almost always comes down to the same thing - casting. It’s hard to pick out the winners, losers, and popular personalities from just one episodes, but I’ve seen season premieres of “Survivor” more promising than “Tocantin - Brazilian Highlands”.
The best seasons of “Survivor” provide a variety of personalities, but the premiere focuses far too much of its time on one particularly annoying contestant, a woman who doesn’t know what “ten paces” means and admits that she generally annoys people. With sixteen players, it’s going to take some time to get to know everyone, but when one tribe member dominates screen time like this it makes one wonder if it’s because the others are not that interesting.
If one looks past one of the most annoying and unusual “Survivor” contestants in history, there are a few personalities stranded in the “Tocantin - The Brazilian Highlands” that may become future reality all-stars. Tyson, the comic relief who realizes that clothing in 120 degree heat is just another problem, Jerry, a 1st Sergeant and specialist in Nuclear Operations who has just returned from Afghanistan, and Carolina, an admittedly whiny bartender, make an instant impression.
Personally, I’ve always been a fan of the seasons of “Survivor” that were more physically challenging than the others. With very little water, no signs of civilization, dangerous wildlife, and deadly heat, “Tocantin - The Brazilian Highlands” looks like it could be one of the most mentally and physically challenging installments to date.
In the long history of “Survivor,” the premiere of “Tocantin - The Brazilian Highlands” falls right in the middle with enough promise in the setting to keep audiences intrigued but a few question marks as to whether or not the casting department might have missed the mark with a few of their contestants.
If a few more personalities in the cast move to the forefront and prove to be as interesting as the players in recent seasons, “Survivor: Tocantins - The Brazilian Highlands” will continue the dominance of one of the best reality shows in the history of television.

It would've been too soon for the HII anyway...no big deal that Sandy didn't play it (assuming she had it).
Yeah she probably knew she was not going, but I believe she didn't find it either.

Okay, i'm watching this episode online now.
Erinn, Tyson, Stephen, Sandy, Sierra, Coach all have the first on screen confessions for first impressions. (Tyson's horrible, Stephen is rude, Erinn is funny) Coach got a second confession. (About getting rid of the weaker ones) JT, Spencer have their first confession. (Forgettable) Erinn, second confession, loads of screentime. (I'm starting to like her, for no reason) Jerry, first confession. (Talking about his life, boring) Coach, third confession, LOADS of screentime. (Tells people how he's playing the game. Big dislike for me here) Brendan, first confession. (Same thoughts, tells us he doesn't need people to tell him how to play the game) Sandy, first confession. (Wow, i already like her. So much determination)
Sandy has the chance to find the idol. WOW. :D Sierra wants to build the camp, WOW decision. I think the producers are really good at this. You build the camp and make people impressed, or you find the idol and make people pissed off with you.. and you can't even protect yourself much. What would you guys choose? I would choose to find the idol (if i were Sandy), and build the camp if i were Sierra. Because i don't think anyone will vote off anyone else but Sandy if they lose immunity.. but the vote can easily change to others like Erinn.. if Sierra proves herself to be strong and worthy of the tribe. Carolina got her first confession. (LOL) Sandy got another confession. She's funny.. LOL. Sierra BUILT A WHOLE SHELTER. SHE'S AMAZING. <3 HER. Coach, you stink!! Really, you stink. Omg, he still wants to vote off Sierra. HATE... Anyway, i realized you can still find the idol after you made the choice to build the shelter first.. so i actually thought i would build the shelter first and look for the idol later? Or is it if you forfeit your chance to look for the idol, you don't get the clue with you again? Carolina got another confession. Tyson and Sierra are funny. LOL. Okay, maybe Tyson wasn't that bad. Tyson got another confession there.. made an impression.
TIMBARA WINS IMMUNITY. OMG. I'm actually rooting for Timbara! :D
Sydney got her first confession. Carolina got another confession. She's starting to be annoying. Taj is HILARIOUS. *CLEANUP THE OUTDOORS*? Carolina learnt her lesson at least.
Spencer is nice, he wants to keep Sandy. Joe, first confession.
Carolina is a nice girl, she apologizes to Sandy for writing her name down.
The tribe is contemplating between Sandy and Carolina to voteoff.
Sandy tries to look for the idol. She perserveres!
Tribal council looks classy! :)
Wow Sandy looks like she's going home. But i hope she stays!
WOW. A BLINDSIDE. CAROLINA GOES HOME. GREAT!! (Even though she's my pre-season pick)
I think Sandy really worked her ass off to stay.
NEXT WEEK LOOKS EXCITING!!!!!

People who really made a first impression - Coach (Benjamin), Erinn, Sandy, Sierra AND Tyson. They are going far, no?
And from the CBS Survivor website - Tyson is the first impression favourite by voters. WOW.
Changing my favourites for now - Erinn and Sierra!! But they don't look like they are here to stay. I'm abit mixed about Tyson.. usually i don't like guys who behave like that.. but i find him an exception? Kinda like him.. might change later on.
One of my pre-season favourites Debbie hardly made the show. -.-
Based on the edit given so far, i am quite sure Coach and Tyson makes the merge. The other guys haven't made an impression yet!

Am I in the minority for not liking Sandy? :\ Joab, I really have to disagree with your statement that Sandy worked really hard to stay. What did she do? She did good on the Immunity challenge, but that was about it. She didn't even bother setting up shelter AT ALL (as in, after the tribe came back and they started working on it the next day). She seemed to be a bit greedy and selfish, too, looking for the idol all the time and with her reaction to getting on the helicopter. Contrast this to Sierra, who not only did good on the challenge, but made a shelter for all of the tribe already with a fever and didn't bother looking for the idol!
Other things:
How did Brendan manage to get no screen time at all whatsoever? O_o That just struck me as really odd that they didn't mention his billionaire (correct me if I'm wrong on that figure) status.
Tyson is actually quite funny. I just hope he doesn't get too far over his head.
I'm also really wondering about the "One shot changes everything" line from the previews. What is that supposed to mean?
I feel sorry for Carolina and didn't think she should've gone home, especially when she realized her mistake (though thank you Taj for giving the line "cleaning up the outdoors"). :\ I don't think she would've made it much farther now, though.
All in all an interesting season premiere though and I'm quite excited for the rest of the season. And sorry Jeff, I'm not quite too sure who to root for yet (It'll probably be most likely Sierra, though I don't think she's staying around long. And my 'first impressions' changed quite considerably throughout the episode.

Yea, but i don't like Sandy. I just wanted Carolina gone more than Sandy.. i think it's just because i like blindsides and shockers.. so Sandy going will be boring and unexciting for me to watch.. lol.
Yea, Brendan is underedited, and Tyson is interesting.. but he has to watch his behaviour to come off as annoying. And i love the fact Carolina realized her mistake and felt sorry for it.. but first impressions are very important... :( I'm also not too sure who to root for, probably Sierra too. -.-
And the one shot changes everything.. perhaps Candace (was it her who gave the shot?) was the one who was going, but because she made a shot and won the challenge, thus winning the immunity for the tribe and saving herself from being voted off? Or something along that line. :duno:

Cool! I also like Erinn, hope she does well. LMAO at next week Sandy pulling her top at the challenge.
Ben even though many will either like/hate him, is an interesting character, the show definitely needs them.
Same for Tyson, but he just may sound more arrogant and blunt.
Sierra proved many wrong, most said she was weak and how wrong were they.
Apparently, Ben made end game due to some weight loss spoiler, not too sure about that since the spoilers were wrong for this 1st episode.

omg, sandy finds the clue to the HII, but doesn't know what ten paces are! :groan:
Quite possibly a severe case of overthinking the clue!
Belle Book
Didn't you all just want to slap her upside the head?
Oh YES. XD I mean, couldn't she at least have seen the palm tree right there? It was fairly obvious where it was.
By the way, is there a possibility Sierra could be looking for the idol sometime? Clearly Sandy's going to try looking for it again, and since Sierra still has the clue, I'm wondering if she'll give it a shot later...

I think when she chose not to look for the idol, she forfeitted her chance to look for the idol and can't do so anymore?

I think the Idol's only good for the first Tribal Council a tribe goes to. Since Sandy presumably didn't find the Idol, she can't look for it again if that's the case. However, if Sierra didn't forfeit the right to search for an Idol when she chose to set up camp, she can still do so.

Exactly it said for the first time "Jalapeno" :funny: goes to TC! And they have been and Sandy survived...Haha Jeff! I think if Jalapaoeno goes to TC again Taj due to her telling her tribe she is a former pop star or Sandy who will weaken are going home and If Timbira goes (god I hope not. I love this tribe) Sierra or Erinn possibly...But I really love everyone on Timbira...Even Tyson I know! And Coach isnt that bad...yet!
