The ballet was filmed at (I think) the Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (http://www.opera-novosibirsk.ru/index.php?locale=en_us). The statues/chandeliers at the top of the seats (you can see them fairly well at :46 in) look like (are) the same as the ones on the site.

Slowhatch, thank you for the link. I had to work to get this, but here is the calendar for Nov. 11, 2008:

11 November Tuesday  18:30 - 22:30   Queen of spades P. Tchaikovsky  Opera in 3 acts  Characters

My timeline shows tthe teams in Novosibirsk from Nov. 10 until the morning of Nov. 12, so they certainly could have gone to the opera the evening of Nov. 11.

Slow going on the cheese workers. The shirts are trachten--traditional costumes. The coat-of-arms doesn't resemble any Swiss canton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flags_of_Swiss_cantons). It might be a city flag or even a company flag. Working with the Flag Identifier and Flag Detective was no help.
(fwiw, the laughter looks prompted/staged, which makes me think maybe the Russian soldiers from last season were prompted as well)

;)  Just wanted to tie-up a few loose ends, for my sake.  Always wondered where Piazza S. Antonio was exactly.  True, it's in Ticino, but that's a canton, it's specifically in the town of Locarno.

As shown below, the racers do/get something in front of Chiara S. Antonio (church) in the small plaza.

Bavarian beer tent? could be Salzburg, Austria

[

Not Bavarian  Bavaria is in Germany.  Salzburg is in Austria.  But Lederhausen are typical Austrian costume.  And the jackets look very Tyrolian (Grey with Green lapels)  This still is a mystery to me.  Why so many cakes?  Looks like one participant is on his fourth beer.  There must be some relationship between the two events since they are being staged together.

Not sure if this was posted elsewhere - but the tandem paragliding may have happened at the "Funny Farm" in Interlaken:

Actually its this place that does the paragliding:

Here is Obermaiselstein Germany, SW of Munich. Now of course the company location doesn't matter, it is where they go to paraglide that is impt.

But why would TPTB hire a GERMAN company to paraglide in AUSTRIA if there is a perfectly nice Austrian company right there?

If there is time to squeeze in a trip to Bavaria, we could claim a 9th country...

You get the feeling looking through albums like this (http://flickr.com/photos/supermac/tags/paragliding/) that the paraglider may as well read "Your Ad Here." I'll stick with Switzerland and Ep 1.

I honestly don't think they have time to get to Germany. If you remember the cars seen in Salzburg had number plates from Stuttgart (where the Mercedes Factory is in Germany). It is possible that production could have done some creative rearranging, and hired the gear from Germany so they could do the para gliding in some remote location rather than using a commercial company in Interlaken itself...for that matter, the cheese could be a setup too :duno:

One thing that's bugging me is the lack of visible snow. Interlaken is in the valley of quite a mountainous area. In November, I would have expected there to be lots of snow on the surrounding peaks at least. Mr Shrek was working in Thun at the other end of the lake at the beginning of December a couple of years ago and has some spectacular photos. He was also passing thru Munich at the beginning of Dec 2008 - just a couple of weeks after this filmed - and there was ground level snow.
All the cheese sites also talk about taking the cows up into the alps to eat the mountain grass in summer as the snow recedes, then descending to the valleys for the winter.

Regarding the gory slime: at first, I thought they'd been involved in a Halloween event even though it was Nov. 3. Halloween is celebrated here but not like it is at home. They sell some "Scream" masks in the stores--that's about it. Anyway, my wife guessed that they could've been taking part in some local custom, maybe something with beer brewing or cheese making. BUT the woman in the car I first saw as well as the older man and woman whom we saw at Hellbrunn had the stuff on them in places you'd figure you would clean up right away, like on your face. It's almost as if they were made up like that and were expected to leave it on. But again, I have no proof. There was some slime on one of the cars that I passed by. I should've taken a sample! By the way, the team of two women appeared to have no slime on them whatsoever which would imply they had a choice in a previous activity. A Detour?

As I thought more about it today, I do remember a crew member saying something about climbing a mountain earlier in the day. Something how his team person saw arrows pointing downward, but she thought it was a trick, so she went back up the mountain. Again, that was a fleeting conversation and I may be messing up the details.

yeah the building behind her in this (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/rawalsh/TAR14/promo1/rff-0013.jpg) shot  looks Swiss, and I can't find that damn pond/lake anywhere, but Italy was the best match on stones. Trouble is that it is in the south, and not at a very high elevation so unlikely to have ground snow fall (yes I'm obsessed with the snow).  None of the other shots have ground snow except the boys crossing the pass in the train, and Salzburg was snow free too so it has to be somewhere alp-ish, although there the small possibility that it could be further on, Romania or even Siberia??

Is it possible that maybe they make them drive from Interlaken to Salzburg.

I did some driving directions on the European version of Mapquest, the trip takes 5 hr 40 minutes, Interlaken to Salsburg. The routing takes them across the Rhine River from Vaduz, Liechtenstein, btw. If in fact that they do drive from Interlaken to Salzburg and do tasks in Germany, then we have our final country.

Continuing on the routing, Obermaiselstein seems to be an acceptabe diversion from the Autobahn for tasks and then after that, back on the Autobahn to Salzburg. Going to Obermaiselstein gets the teams farther north of the spine of the Alps and at lower altitude, which might explain why there is no snow there yet and no huge peaks in the background of the promos of some tasks. Taking the diversion off the Autobahn to Obermaiselstein and back to the Autobahn, makes the driving time from Interlaken to Salzburg at about 7 hours.

I remember in TAR9, that the teams had to drive from Stuttgart to Bad Tolz and back to Munich. So WRP has previously had teams drive in this part of the world. They had to put on Lederhosen and break bottles or dance. So the beer/cake tent could be in Bavaria as well.

Interlaken to Obermaiselstein to Salzburg.

Anyway, nothing earthshattering, just some wierd/strange thoughts at 4 am.
Title: Re: Promo Screencaps
Post by: apskip on January 28, 2009, 09:05:46 AM
Dr. Rox:

I did the same driving directions as you and came out almost identical. The straight through route without diversion to Obermaiselstein is "Geschätzte Fahrtdauer: 5 Stunden 38 Minuten Entfernung insg.: 605 Kilometer". I expected it would be more kilometers and more time, but there it is. The diversion to Obermaiselstein may be a little more than 2 hours total since the main route goes to the Munich autobahn, which is further north than the more direct but more time route to Salzburg.

For those of you who have not found Obermaiselstein on a map, it is quite near Fussen in southwest Bavaria but may not be on your map(it isn't on mine).
Title: Re: Promo Screencaps
Post by: DrRox on January 28, 2009, 09:26:49 AM
apskip,

I used both Mapquest and Google Earth for driving directions. Obermaiselstein comes up in both databases. There was about 10 minutes differences in travel time between Mapquest and Google Earth.

I just got through looking at the picture of the Auburn couple at the train station in Interlaken. There is snow in the streets if you look. So if there is snow on the streets when they get to Interlaken, then I am sure the mountain slopes are covered in snow too. So again, that makes me think the cheese deal and paragliding are somewhere at a lower altitude and farther north away from the high mountains in the Alps..

I created this map of the Interlaken area to show potential task sites.

The red pins show sites that http://www.twinparagliding.com (http://www.twinparagliding.com) use for paragliding. Most interesting is that there is a location near Mürren - but the James Bond location near Schilthorn would be really interesting.
I also highlighted  the "Outdoor Museum" in Ballenberg - which is a possibility for the cheese tasks. They do cheese making demonstrations using heritage methods...

All the sites seem to be within a 30 minute drive of Interlaken.

NVM - paragliding is in Gemany...  :-[

I think that picture of the Munoz brothers is coming OUT of the north protal of the Gotthard Tunnel, on the way from Locarno to Interlaken at Goschenen.

If it was going into the tunnel on the way to Locarno, I would think they would be looking the other way and their hair would be blowing opposite to what it is, in that pic. The only reason to be coming OUT of that tunnel is to get to Interlaken. Ialso found pics of Swiss trains that were that color. A sort of dark green with the Swiss flag on them. The pic was taken in that station, Goschenen. The pic had about 6 different kinds of trains the Swiss use. I thought I saved the URL for the pic, but I dont see it. I will try to find it today.

The Gotthard Tunnel route is longer but faster trains to Interlaken. The train from Locarno to Domodossola is slow and a narrow gauge train. Once in Domodessola, they could get the fast trains to Interlaken. The narrow gauge train takes 2 hours to go about 80 miles.

I read some blog posts by people that took that trip from Locarno to Domodossola and they referred to that train as a "toy train."

oooh pretty map! Now where did I read about how to embed one here? I'll look in a minute!

But what am I missing about the paragliding? Why would twinparagliding be using a chute from another company? Sorry, I am feeling dense about this. If the chute says this other company, isn't it reasonable to think they were involved? Which continues the question of paragliding being in Austria or Obermaiselstein, right?

If I have missed something, please tell me...I'm all bewildered and perplexed,

The website says the paragliding "experience" can be up to 60 minutes long - depending on where you start from and thermal conditions. If they only had one parasail that could mean only one racer an hour - then they would have to drive the parasail back up to the launch point. They probably borrowed parasails from another company so they could - in theory - have all the racers in the air at once.

The ride from Beatenburg description says, "Afterwards you will land in the cosy centre of Interlaken, which is located at 1,700 ft above sea level."
Flying time from Beatenburg without/with thermals - ca. 15 Min. up to 30 Min.

I don't think one company chosen to be featured on a major TV event will be choosing to feature another company's chute, sorry. And surely they have plenty of chutes? I too initially thought twingliding was the one, but perhaps it is OASE. I like the no snow--must be at lower altitude idea.  I still feel like I may be missing something though. hmmm.... interesting.... so you think they are going NORTH.  Does the video show the train going north?  Don't recall that fact from the video.  So Wassen would be the connecting point to Interlaken?  hmmm....

eta: just checked the YouTube videos (on pg. 1) and don't see the train vidcaps.  I did notice that in the two vidcaps on page 1, that the building is smaller in the second vidcap, indicating that they are traveling away from the building(south), provided that that was the order they were captured.  Only puddin knows for sure.   ;)

eta again:  Just checked with the expert (puddin) and according to the original YouTube video, the train is traveling AWAY from the building, therefore going South towards the Gotthard Tunnel.   :snicker:

As far as the cheese run goes, my leading candidate so far is this patch of ground (http://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF8&ll=46.678939,7.856877&spn=0.003077,0.00817&t=h&z=18) (no name yet) at the edge of the "Kleiner Rugen" woods; according to GE it has a steep slope.

Nice find, Puddin!  :waves: They seem to be called "Trychlers (http://www.trychler.ch/start.htm)". And it wasn't a coat-of-arms silhouette, it was a bell shape.  :-[ A multi-part task? Or just some more cowbell to ring in the racers?

This may or may not help at all but the flag hanging above the band in this shot
(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/rawalsh/TAR14/promo1/rff-0003.jpg)
just happens to be the colours of Dorfbeuern which is a municipality in the district of Salzburg-Umgebung Link (http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/at-z-dbe.html)

...of course it could also be somewhere totally different, because red and blue are pretty popular flag colours....

Well, it is really the same place, Peach. The Hochfelln Massif is just a really really big rock just south of the Chiemsee, west of Salzburg near the town of Ruhpolding, Germany. Do a GE on Ruhpolding, Germany and then zoom out. I cannot do screen caps on this computer or I would do the GE for you.

The entertainment park in Ruhpolding, says it is a 30 minute drive from Salzburg.

Thanks that helps!

From apskips reference:

Ruhpolding
Journey via Traunstein, Siegsdorf and Eisenärzt. Stroll through the well-known mountain location and the spa gardens. Coffee break in the spa casino with musical entertainment. For those interested there is an opportunity for a mountain cable car excursion to the Rauschberg. A special attraction is the newly laid-out alpine educational trail on top of the Rauschberg. This is a wide, flat and spaciously laid-out trail on which older participants can walk without difficulty and strain. It leads to the most beautiful viewpoints and past several cabins in which interesting insights about the alpine flora and the geological development of the Rauschberg massif are provided. Return journey along the German Alpine Road toward Inzell, the famous venue for winter sport activities. Return via Siegsdorf, Traunstein and Altötting.

Here is a site on paragliding take off points from the Rauschberg massif:

In my surfing today I read somewhere (can't find it again) that the tents in Bavaria are traditionally blue and white striped like their flag (there was a red and white striped Austrian tent in another photo). Thats a great find, Chateau....simply great. I think I looked at the coastline of every lake along that autobahn from Interlaken to Salzburg. Last night I was scanning pictures around the Eagle's Nest/Obersalzburg area, but had not yet got to the Konigssee yet....wow....that is terrific.

That really cements Germany as the 9th country.

I think it is instructive to look at the sites for activities for the "Salzburg leg". We have now identified places in Germany not more than 25 miles from Salzburg as where they are happening. I attribute this to World Race Productions running a stealth campaign to minimize the probability of being sighted. In Salzburg itself there are many international (including U.S.) tourists, so going to very small towns in Bavaria should have and did make it difficult for us to figure out where things are.

Anyway, here are some photos (http://www.streita.name/_sgg/m8mj_1.htm) of the takeoff and landing areas (apparently, the hang-gliders and paragliders start at different places). And here's a reverse angle (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EzoRIMhdmLY/SBWcCz0jjSI/AAAAAAAAARU/0Jid1FuwSsU/s1600-h/DSC00092.JPG) up to the top of Rauschberg. The best I can do on the wooden backpacks is Kraxe. These days Kraxe refers to baby-carriers, but in the past "kraxentragers" were wandering woodcarvers who sold their supply off their backs. (see here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/34521307@N00/327373031/)). I don't know who makes them, but the ones the racers used seemed rather flimsy.

This is the info I found on them earlier in the week. They were simply referred to as a Holzräf (Wooden pack)
I'd posted this in the speculation thread instead of here.

I have been trying to find out more about the wooden backpacks they are using here
(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/rawalsh/TAR14/promo1/rff-0051.jpg)

I haven't been able to find a really close match yet, but it seems that they are a traditional Swiss German Räf defined here (http://www.heidiland.com/en/navpage.cfm?category=heidimagazinhl&subcat=heidimagazinhl&id=321887) as
"A frame for carrying objects on one’s back, with which one can balance cumbersome and heavy loads over the centre line of the body, thus making them easier to carry."
The picture on this page here (http://209.85.173.132/search?q=cache:tN33IH9YjFsJ:photo.net/photodb/photo%3Fphoto_id%3D7660219+%22wooden+backpack%22+Switzerland&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=8&gl=nz) has been removed, but I think the comment is referring to the same piece of apparatus
"The wooden backpack is also used for carrying the large cheeses down into the valley."

:jumpy: Found the missing pic. I think it's a match

Did the teams split up? Nijjy saw teams on the western run (Domodossola>Spiez>Interlaken), and Boingo spotted the Munoz bros.  :yess: on the eastern run (Bellinzona>Lucerne>Interlaken). System map here (http://rail.myswitzerland.com/download_sts/uebersichtskarte_en.pdf) (430kb pdf).

Is it possible to get any sort of time indication from the photo of the Munoz bros? According to the eye witness on the other train it was around midday when the others got on their train in Domodossola

Chalk another one of the list, well the banner anyway! I have been looking thru tent rentals or Partyzelt or Festzelte, not much luck though.

BG is definitely involved here.  The banner in our screen caps belongs to Hoffbrauhaus Berchtesgaden (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/3728782) And their website (http://www.berchtesgadener-bier.de/brauerei.html).

I can't find where they have the big tent on GE.

Germany was there the whole time!!
  Did a quick check of the license plate on the white Mercedes the blogger photographed as a TAR car in Salzburg (Austria).  It appears to be a German license plate.  Note the font, the Euro blue, the similar graphics consistent with a German plate.  So if it's not Swiss, and not Austrian, did they drive it all the way from Germany?     How does this figure into the flight schedules?   :umn:  Or did they ship these cars in from Germany just for the product promotion.  So many questions....  :funny:

And yippee for self navigation again!!  :jumpy:

The car number plate originates in Stuttgart. I think the most likely scenario is that they trained/flew to Munich and picked the cars up from there but from memory it's only a couple of hours drive from Stuttgart to Munich on the Autobahn

I was just coming to post that Mrs Shrek  :jam:

That car was registered in Stuttgart, which is where the Mercedes factory is located. So that ties in with them being a sponsor product. It is quite common to put a bunch of cars on a truck and transport them from A to B in Europe. I would assume they will just pick the cars up and take them back to Stuttgart again on a truck when they are finished - it's only about 125 miles  from Munich - so only an hour or two drive on the autobahn

Do you think they could have possibly had the cars delivered to Switzerland and had them drive to Bavaria from there? If I was a field producer, I would not want to send racers into Munich unnecessarily, far too many tourists...

Anything is possible. It would all come down to how direct the route from Stuttgart to Interlaken is for a truck transporter (ie main highways as opposed to windy alpine roads). I'll go look at a map now.*
Because in Germany you have to reregister your car if you move to a new district, so those cars had to originate in Stuttgart. Another alternative to Munich would be taking the train to Zurich and self driving from there. At airports the racers are quite obvious, as there is a lot of hanging around and there are a large number of travellers (all blogging and with camera handy), but in past races, other forms of public transport such as trains and buses have had less reliable race sightings, and so a Munich train station sighting could still have easily escaped our attention.

*ETA according to Google it is nearly 4 hrs drive from Stuttgart to Interlaken, but just over 2 hrs to either Munich or Zurich, so either option would be feasible.

I think that Mercedes dropped the cars off in Interlaken and picked them up in Salzburg. That means the teams drove from Interlaken to Schloss Hellbrunn. Thats probably why we didnt find any reports of people seeing them in airports or train stations between Interlaken and Salzburg.  More stealth stuff from BVM as apskip calls it.

I concur with Dr.Rox. The logical place to pick up a vehicle is Interlaken. We have already offered the time for the drive to Salzburg of 5 hours 40 minutes but it would be slightly less to Berchtesgaden or elsewhere in Bavaria (the Germany side of the border).

Here's the thing:  note that when they start the cake tossing, all the cakes behind him are lined up on the tables, but at the end of the sequence it looks like about 6 or 7 are missing (big mess on floor).  So my guess is that thems have to throw cakes into the face until the next CLUE falls out onto the floor .  That is the reason for all the cakes:  10 teams throw a hellva lot of cakes hunting for clues.
