Just organizing the team info witnessed in Portland here:

Downtown Portland
Well, I went down there again to check out the scene.  Parked my car & lo and behold, what do I see but two people driving away in one of the minivans from the closed off lot.  Jumped back in the car to follow it - they drove down to 2nd av. and are parked in front of voodoo donut.  I bet they have or will have a shoot there - it's a weird Portland thing.  Two people waiting in the car.  Wish they would leave so I could follow them some more..

Well, sorry peeps, I had to come back to work.. After about half an hour of waiting, I walked by the van and it is a couple PAs waiting for something.  Literally doing a crossword.  I did see a conversation they had with what looked like the manager of Voodoo Donut.  I went in there to get me a donut and asked the clerk when the Amazing Race was going to be there.  He gave me a blank stare - so maybe the staff doesn't know about it, or has been instructed to not answer.  Maybe they are just getting donuts for the crew.. who knows.  Now I'm back to paying

There was a clue box right in front of VooDoo donuts, I was there today. When nobody was close to coming, the producers would cover the box with a trash bag but when people were nearby, they would uncover the box and shoo anyone away that was standing near it. It was probably one of the last clues if the Pittock Mansion was the last stop.

They are in Portland today. I was on 5th and Salmon outside my office and two different sets of couples ran by (guy/girl and girl/girl) with a camerman and soundman each.   It looked too like Amazing Race not to be.

I just ran down the street in Portland following two girls and the camera crew.
The went to voodoo doughnuts (for a clue I think)   Police talked to producers because fans were running after the racers.
They thought someone was running out on a meal bill...  the team got into the van and drove off.

I know, girl/girl was stupid.....I was a little excited about the siting.  I saw them about 1:55pm running North.  But, I did notice they looked awfully rested, not frazzled at all....maybe decoys.

more from the wweek.com site in comments  (http://wweek.com/wwire/?p=11881). I suppose 13 - 1111 means 11 episodes *sigh*

**SPOILER**

I followed the girls, and the camera... I would bet money this was a decoy, Sammyk you nailed it. The girls got into a WRP van near the Voodoo Doughnuts, the were asking people along the way where Voodoo was... YET NO CLUE was to be found there. They all got into a van and drove off.

Okay guys, I AM able to share some more info w/ you!

With many thanks to our incredible  Portland photographer who has been hard at work on our behalf!!

Quote
I'm pleased to report that I saw a male-male team in downtown Portland
this evening
(peach: that would be 5/14) at about 6:00 local time. A cameraman and a sound man
were following them.

I saw them head west along Alder, then south on 10th, then east on
Morrison. They asked for directions at the food carts that occupy the
parking lot north of Alder, and they looked at a metal map kiosk at
the corner of 10th and Morrison.

They looked to be mid to late 20s or even maybe early 30s. Both were
wearing khaki trousers; the taller one was slightly heavyset and had
reddish curly hair and was wearing a baseball cap and a blue T-shirt.
The other had blonde to sandy blonde hair and no hat. Both had
backpacks.

What struck me, though, was how slowly they were moving compared to my
expections. They certainly were not running. I don't know if this
means they are a decoy, or that they are real but exhausted, or that
they are real and in last place, or what.

I often buy magazines at a store on 9th & Alder, so I asked the
cashier there if I knew anything about TAR in Portland. He said, "Oh,
is that what that was?" I said, "Is that what WHAT was?" He said he
had seen a male  and a female plus two-man crew
also proceeding along
Alder. I asked him when that was. He said about two hours previously,
which puts it at around 4:00 p.m. I asked him if he recalled any other
details; he said he did not, except that the girl was pretty. :-/

I did not have a camera with me, but where they were is VERY central
location; and while Portland is considerably less densely occupied
than, say, LA or even Denver, I will be very surprised if no one here
managed to take a reasonable picture of at least one of the teams.

I asked our source if these guys could maybe be who he saw?

And so sadly, since we don't even know their names yet (that seems so wrong somehow!), he replied:

Oooh! Yes, I do think so! Their relative heights and hair colors match!

PDX

I was waiting to pick my boyfriend up at International arrivals around Noon today.  saw a young couple, very fit and attractive and then 2 sisters (they looked related) also young and wearing matching nike workout gear- they definitely stood out, then when a camera crew w/ tons of gear started filming them running thru the terminal, well that's when it clicked! the A.R!! i love the show and had NO idea they might be in PDX. so, my boyfriend saw them in customs and he thought they had come from Moscow before PDX.
Cool! can't wait to see it on TV.

i don't recognize the teams i saw from any of those pics- the couple (i am assuming that by the way- could be bro/ sis) she had dark hair, he had dark blond hair.  very fit and looked like the had just climbed a mtn.

Thanks stacy !! Were the 2 girls blond by any chance? we are missing some of the teams pictures but word is there were 2 blonds in pink.
Yes- sisters were blond!

I saw TAR teams today as well at PDX.  I drive the international buses at PDX but not today.  However, I was driving the terminal parking lot  buses today and saw a camera man /sound man  running after a very tan blond woman in a florescent green sporty outfit, backpack  and one of those TAR  clue cards (?)  in her hand just about the time  the Germany  flight  would have landed. They were getting a taxi here at PDX.  I had to keep  my  eyes on my driving  but a person in the bus said they were from The Amazing Race.

My  next  loop  around (20 minutes later), I arrived  at the terminal  and  saw  more teams grabbing a taxi.  Fortunately  I was driving the Employee lot bus  and one of the supervisors  (who  got  on  camera & had to sign a TAR release  for TV)   confirmed that the teams  in fact were from TAR and got off the Lufthansa  flight from Germany to Portland OR.    They were headed  up to Washington state. He also said there were only  4 teams and perhaps  the other two teams  went up via  Seattle first -  but that of course is purely  speculation.

Cascade Locks  (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascade_Locks,_Oregon)

I have never posted before but have loved TAR since season 1.

Just talked with a co-worker whose husband was hiking in the Columbia Gorge at about 2:30 pm and saw racing teams, vehicles and a helicopter in the vicinity of Bridge of the Gods. He wasn't sure what it was until she called him about the Portland rumor. Could it be the race?

I work in Cascade Locks, and there is a zip line in place right now from the Bridge of the Gods to Thunder Island.  I don't know when they put it up, but it sure wasn't there yesterday!   :yess:  I got there in time to see the camera crews packing up and loading equipment into vans, but a fellow teacher saw two couples ride the zip line down to the island.  This was between 2:30-3:30 this afternoon.  There were helicopters circling the site, three camera crews at and around the bridge, and they apparently paid the owners of the Charburger restaurant to close for the day so they could secure the parking lot which overlooks the river and the zip line.  There were six yellow cabs at the parking lot where the access to the island is, along with more camera crews, and the officer that I talked to said they always stage it so that people don't know for sure how many couples are left.  Does that sound reasonable?
The other teacher talked to one of the cab drivers, who said he picked up two people at the airport from an overseas flight, took them to Newberg where they "ran around and looked for a clue", then drove them to Cascade Locks.  For some reason someone asked him if this was Fear Factor, but he said it was more like a scavenger hunt.  Apparently he has not actually seen Amazing Race himself, so didn't know anything about the usual process.

Title sounds like something that would be said about Nick, Starr, Dallas or Toni.  I don't see it being a Dandrew comment, and lets face it Ken is huge I would say it about him  Though I suppose it could be about Tina (but I doubt it)

It would probably be said about Starr or Toni, but that's just my guess.

Woman in a "sporty green outfit," flying on a zipline? Sounds like Peter Pan to me.

I think it's Ken saying it to Tina.

Sounds like him too - he had that "You look like GI Jane" line last night.

I actually think that Toni and Dallas may win because of what happened with Dallas and the nude pictures and how fast they dissappered.

The area around the Benson is where the spoiler photos were taken. Most likely where production stayed.

That photo is the Hotel Vintage Plaza. One block south on Broadway, and across the street (422 is the street number).

Newberg is a town south and west of Portland. In the middle of wine country. I believe it was discussed early on. There's really nothing else that would apply to.

Nothing in the previews seems to indicate they really went there. The shots in the woods, the bridge, etc. are all in the Gorge.

Attractions in Newberg:

Champoeg Park - Champoeg offers nature and recreation at its finest. The park provides camping with all amenities: picnic sites, an amphitheater, and bike and hiking trails along the Willamette River. Champoeg's past is preserved in buildings and historical sights. There is an annual Champoeg State Park Pageant.

Herbert Hoover House - This is the boyhood home of the 31st President of the United States, Herbert Hoover. The house is open daily for tours.

Wineries - The Willamette Valley is home to some of the finest wineries in the northwest, many receiving worldwide recognition for the variety and quality of their wines. Yamhill County has over 25 wineries.

hi all - great site! i just watched tonight's episode and recognized portland from the brief one sec trailer of Nick & Starr outside the hotels...anyway I decided to learn more and my google search brought me here.  What awesome sleuthing!

I read through a lot of posts and am still learning how the producers plan out the itineraries but thought I might be able to help answer Qs about portland.  BTW I live very near Pittock and work a few blocks from where the downtown scenes were filmed...unfortunately when TAR was in town I hadn't found RFF yet!

Newberg -- is more than an hour from PDX, and very unpredictable with traffic.  The distance doesn't fit for teams getting into taxis at PDX. Unless TAR filmed a race day in Portland had a pit stop than did a short detour before racing to the finish line, I think Newberg is an unlikely location to send the teams.

Are you sure about the time at the finish line being that early? The sets fairly late in Portland, and they're facing due west.

It is definitely not the Oregon City Bridge, which is concrete. There's no question it's the Bridge of the Gods (though the yellow paint has faded since that picture).

Looking at the N/S picture, I am sorry to say that it looks like they have it sewn up.

This would break Colin and Christy's record of 6 leg wins, and also makes it the first time a team related by blood has won.

How could you tell?   ;)

The area around the Benson is where the spoiler photos were taken. Most likely where production stayed.

That photo is the Hotel Vintage Plaza. One block south on Broadway, and across the street (422 is the street number).
Enrico! I remember you from that other place! You rock so much! Glad to see you here.  :jumpy: :jumpy:

That looks good peach but where are they?

The Cluebox's look like a Detour and Dandrew say something about getting through it fast, I think this is Newberg, first task.
The tree canopy/ grab the clue thing must be the Roadblock Dan/Starr/Tina
Then the Bridge of Gods must be something they all do but whether the RB or Bridge comes first I don't know plus all that running around in downtown Portland for clues might come before the pitstop so it would seem.

Peach, I have attempted to learn enough from those videos to figure out where the tree climbing took place. One possibility is Willamette National Forest, the closest accessible part of which is 60 miles south from Portland to Salem, then 48 miles east on Oregon route 22 to just west of Detroit OR. Another possiblity run by the Pacific Tree Climbing Institute  is Oswald West State Park just north of Manzanita on the Pacific Coast. To get there from Portland it is about 75 miles WNW, including the last segment on local roads cutting southwest to Nehalem, just south of Manzanita. Given the time constraints of fitting between about 12pm estimated airport departure and approximately 5pm first place finish, I conclude that the task at the Cascade Locks area being east of Portland precludes going large distances either west or south.

There is a series of State Parks west of the Cascade Locks along US30. I believe that one of them should be the site of the tree climbing task. Possible state parks for this are:
Rooster Rock
Lewis and Clark
Crown Point
Sheppard
Shepherd's Dell
Benson
Ainsworth
John B. Yeon
Viento

EDITOR's NOTE - A reference to Benson was removed as superfluous and distracting. I changed 4pm to 5pm finish time. I added Rooster Rock, John B. Yeon and Viento State Parks to this list from examining the map for hard-to-read information.

Ummm...Production stayed in the Hotel Vintage in downtown Portland. Others were also using the Benson Hotel in downtown as a reference point. I don't believe there was ever mention of a town Benson.

So Newberg might be where they do the detour and I'm thinking the cluebox's might be around the Cascade locks ... we see water and maybe we can match the mountain and I'm thinking but am not sure that the building/house behind Tina and Ken might be the Cascade Museum but I'm still looking.

Well, I hate to put a kink in everyone's joy, but I do not believe that the Cluebox task is on Thunder Island. If you will look at Kiwi's beautiful pic of Thunder Island, you will notice that Thunder Island is surrounded by lake water.....calm still lake water.

Now if you will look at the following 3 photos, you will see in the background on the left, through the trees, what I believe is white water. This is indicative of rapids. Also the foliage is much less manicured than Thunder Island.

This photo really shows the boulders in the stream creating the rapids. It seems to me that the stream is flowing toward the camera. It is a little hard to tell in N/S photos. They are pretty flat, a but different camera angle in the K/T photo shows the direction of flow. It could possibly be an island in a smaller stream. The water behind Ken seems to maybe be diverting to the right. But it is much smaller stream than either the Colombia River or Lake Bonneville.

So my conclusion is, that it is either a steam flowing downstream either west or north. Mt Hood is just to the south and east of Cascade Locks, so all water flows west and north in this area. Maybe some of the Portland people can lock down just where this might be. I am assuming this is southeast of Portland. If it is southwest of Portland, ie, in the Newberg area, then the directions of the water would be reversed. The water would be flowing either east or north toward Portland.

It could be on private property, but I would guess one of those smaller parks with a stream running through it.

I first thought this was the brainteaser just before the Finish Line, but now I believe it is just a find a clue task. All those clueboxes and just three of them have a clue in it.

There is the Willamette River quite near to Newberg, but I personally do not believe there was time to go to Cascade Locks and anywhere near Newberg.

However, Dr. Rox, I do not find your analysis totally convincing. It was a calm day when the reference picture of the Columbia River and Thunder Island was taken, so the camera would not reveal anything turbulent. If weather conditions were such that it was high winds, which I know to occasionally happen in northern Oregon, then turbulent water conditions would happen. Wind speed varies widely in the Portland area. I have tried to get something to approximate the conditions on the water when the prevailing wind direction was from the southwest. I chose Mt. Scott, which has probably the second highest average winds in the Portland metro area. Here is the wind table from the Weather Underground for May 14, 2008:

Wind Speed: Max. 15.0mph / 24.1km/h SW  Average 4.9mph / 7.8km/h NW
Wind Gust:  Max. 15.0mph / 24.1km/h

Those winds could have created major tubulence for the small stretch of river between Thunder Island and the mainland.

I have been researching other tree climbing companies besides those I mentioned in a prior post #1121 at 10:20pm last night. Here they are:

Tree Climbing Northwest
Driving from the airport to the climbing site is about 23 miles and takes about 35 minutes.
20451 S Central Point Road
Oregon City, OR 97045

This one is close to Portland and a top choice for where the tree climbing took place along with the next 3 below:

Portland Parks and Recreation (Permitted by the USFS for guiding on Mt. Hood)
503-823-5132

Timberline Mountain Guides (Permitted by the USFS for guiding on Mt. Hood)
541-312-9242

NW School of Survival (Permitted by the USFS for guiding on Mt. Hood)
503-668-8264

Mt. Hood's lower slopes would be fine for AR13's purpose and are geographically close to Portland.

Oregon Peak Adventures (Mt. Adams and St. Helens climbs, rock/snow climbing instruction, adventure travel and more)
503-297-5100

First Ascent Climbing Services (rock climbing instruction, Smith Rock and Joshua Tree)
800-325-5462

However, the last two above are out because Mt. Adams is over an hour away in Washington State, Mt. Saint Helens is also an hour away, Smith Rock is in the middle of Oregon hours away, and Joshua Tree is a national park in California.

apskips -- then why does Andrew instruct his driver to go to Newberg? and this ,,

My speculation is Timberline Lodge for the finish?

Next on The Amazing Race:
You Look Like Peter Pan
*Racers are challenged with a course used to confront fears in Oregon’s most dangerous business: logging.

*One racer helplessly watches from the ground as their teammate struggles with a fear of heights up above.

*Teams ride a 2,000 foot zip line across the Columbia River.

*Racers compete neck and neck in a nail-biting competition that tests their memory of events from the entire race.

*Teams beg Portland locals to help them find the place where "the magic is in the hole."

*After a race of nearly 40,000 miles across five continents, one of three final teams will cross the finish line first to be declared winners of THE AMAZING RACE and take home 1 MILLION DOLLARS.

Well it seems like to me that the "line of march" is:

1)Portland International to Newberg.......Mapquest says this is 52 minutes at 36 miles.

2) Newberg to Cascade Locks.......Mapquest says this is 79 minutes at 67 miles.

3) Cascade Locks to Voodoo Donuts.....Mapquest says this is 48 minutes at 43 miles.

4) Voodoo Donuts to Pittcock Mansion......Mapquest says 9 minutes at 3 miles.

That is 3 hours just in driving time.Newberg does not look good for the tree climbing. Its all cultivated in grapes. I suppose the tree climbing is between Newberg and Cascade Locks. There are so many places of old growth trees to be able to do that. Just north of the Pittcock Mansion is Mcleay Park and the Autobon Society and from the pics, lots and lots of old growth trees. But I think some place along the line of the drive from Newberg to the Zip line. They arrive around noon......three hours driving time and one hour to do tasks puts them at Finish Line at 4 PM which is what Chateau has estimated.

The "memory tests" from past Amazing Races (the two most prominent were AR8 and AR9 in my opinion) typically take a long time. These tests tuypically are the decisive task in finales.

One hour for this list of tasks not including a Roadblock is quite insufficient compared to what I expect the total should be.

I think the edge has to go to Nick/Starr on a memory test(which is usually a Roadblock). They are preparing for the finale by rereading their diary of the entire AR13. Andrew/Dan are smart but they don't appear to have good memories. I have no idea how good Ken/Tina will be. She seems like the better of their team to do this.

Newberg is a town south and west of Portland. In the middle of wine country. I believe it was discussed early on. There's really nothing else that would apply to.

Nothing in the previews seems to indicate they really went there. The shots in the woods, the bridge, etc. are all in the Gorge.

I agree with Enrico V. I have no reason to believe that finalists went to Newberg. It was probably a decoy team that was sent there. Newberg is just too far from Casade Locks and even from downtown Portland. There would be little reason for finalists to go there.

puddin, yes, they do say that at 0:41 into the Preview. I did not watch this prview as I had watched what I thought was the lower quality version of it Sunday night.

There is nothing in Newberg, this town of about 20,000 inhabitants that appears special, although the Willamette River does flow through it. You have already noted beautiful state park Champoeg State Heritage Area, which is seven miles southeast of Newberg. Rich in history, Champoeg also offers nature and recreation at its finest. The park provides camping with all the amenities, picnic sites, open fields, an amphitheater, and bike and hiking trails along the Willamette River. Champoeg's past is preserved in several buildings and historical sites.

Newberg is situated in a natural bowl between the mountains and the Willamette River. It is conceivable that tree climbing arrangements could have been made somewhere in those mountains.

Post by: walkingguide on December 02, 2008, 06:13:59 PM
I'm a longtime walker/hiker in the Portland area, Columbia Gorge, Newberg (lived 8 miles from Newberg until last December).

I also find the timeline to be a problem.  I'd never consider getting from PDX to Newberg to Cascade Locks and back to Portland in 5 hours.  But, it's a raaaaaaccccce!  At least a noon arrival at PDX means they won't hit traffic.

Champoeg State Park is just across the Willamette River from Newberg, via a bridge.  They have lots of tall trees there.  I used the forested path from Butteville into the park as my main marathon walk training route for over five years.  Yep, those could be the trees.  I know them intimately.   Also, there are still plenty of big trees just outside of Newberg on the hills.  I've done walks the past 2 years that started at a winery and went through forest on the vineyard grounds.  We are not deforested completely around Newberg.  (FWIW, I wouldn't drive through Newberg to get to Champoeg, I'd stay on I-5 and cut over through Butteville, much faster, but I'm a local).  Actually, Champoeg has an address in "St. Paul" rather than Newberg, so the climbing might be on private land owned by a farmer or in the hills around Newberg.

Cascade Locks:  the Columbia River around Cascade Locks is NOT A LAKE.  Yes, it is an impoundment behind gigantic Bonneville Dam, but there is a current around Thunder Island and can be a lot of chop and waves in the water when the wind is blowing.  And the wind blows 99% of the time, HARD.  Cascade Locks is a very windy place, and this area is frequented by sailboarder and windsurfers as a mecca.  There can often be whitecaps on the river from the wind chop around Thunder Island.

I can't see the clips yet to comment on Columbia River vs. Willamette River.  The Willamette River at Champoeg isn't very swift and it's far, far, far narrower than the Columbia at Cascade Locks.  May is the high run-off season, so either river would be high.  Bonneville Dam would be spilling the excess, so there would be a good current at Cascade Locks.

I've strolled around Thunder Island on volksmarch walks at least six times, I know it well.  Lots of geese doo-doo.  It is a popular wedding venue, although you definitely risk losing any hats or veils.  Last June when I went over the little bridge onto the island, I had my hat secured around my wrist and it still blew away and I had to chase it.

Bridge of the Gods is a very scary bridge.  We had one volksmarch that crossed it.  It is open steel grating underfoot for most of its length.  Total vertigo experience.  It is a looooooooooonnnnnnnggggg way from Bridge of the Gods to Thunder Island, so I definitely believe the 2000-ft zip line!  The Pacific Crest Trail crosses the bridge and those who are using pack animals have to blindfold their horses to lead them across.  I don't know if they do any other physical tasks, but the trails up from Bridge of the Gods are gorgeous but steep, a real hike.

That tree-climbing trapeze thing could be in Champoeg, or it could be somewhere else in the Newberg area.  But to tell you the truth, we have trees all over the place here in NW Oregon that look like that, that's how they grow, so it could be anywhere.  It's only because a cabbie told somebody they went to Newberg that I'd say it wasn't somewhere else.  It could easily be the dirt trail and path in Champoeg, or any logging road anywhere in NW Oregon/SW Washington.

I've reviewed the preview video and I think all of the clueboxes shown are on Thunder Island near Bridge of the Gods.  Champoeg doesn't quite look like that (in areas with grass, they mostly have oak trees, it's only in the areas without grass they have the tall Douglas Fir), but Thunder Island does 100%  I'm extremely confident now that the river you see behind the sibs is the Columbia River.  Definitely it looks like Thunder Island.  I've circled that puppy many times.

The zip line from the bridge goes to Thunder Island, according to the reports.

Not sure how many actual hours of travel time from Moscow to Portland (including the airport layover), but it certainly has to be a fairly long trip.

It may be my imagination, but doesn't Ken look pale and possibly very tired in some of the promos?  Pale and dark circles / bags under his eyes?  It is not that he is a bit unshaven, he just looks flat tired, worn out.

Dan and Andrew look reasonably refreshed, especially during what is possibly the first taxi cab ride.  Looks like Dan and especially Andrew got lots of rest on the plane or they didn't have to get out of bed as early as the other 2.

Nick and Starr look in fairly good shape also.  So may be they were able to sleep on the plane or youth beats age.

The flights combination leaves Moscow-Domodedovo at 705am and arrives Portland at 1120am for an apparent flying time of 4 hours 15 minutes. To that must be added the time zone difference of 11 hours to get 15 hours 15 minutes actual total time including less than an hour connecting in Frankfurt.

I've been working on Boingo's Moving Mat with only modest progress. The river and the span behind them (footbridge?) seem a bit narrow for the main channel of the Moscow river; I'm thinking it's the Vodootvodny (water bypass) canal. There's a list of bridges here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bridges_in_Moscow#Bridges_over_Vodootvodny_Canal), but I can't make an exact match. The Meridien is no help this time, it's across the street from Red Square  :duno: .

  Don't forget about Matt's pix of the (pitstop hotel?) Swissotel (next to the Arts Center).  It has the Moscow River on one side and the canal on the other side.  I suspect that since the VDNKh was probably closed that early in the morning, they use an area not far from the (pitstop hotel?) Swissotel to start the final leg.     Not obvious to me where it is exactly.    ;)

The Swissotel is right next to that canal and there is a pedestrian bridge across the canal next to it. It is walking distance to the train station that has direct trains to DME airport. The airport where Lufthansa flies from.

Thanks for the video puddin

The scene in New Delhi with the masked crew in the vicinity of the chilies makes me think about poor Terence and Sarah doing the task.

They came out of that with great enthusiasm I think I would be crying lol

In my geographic research of the area to the east of Portland out to Cascade Locks, I have come upon one falls that could possibly be involved in the finale(I'm not sure how, but it is along the way and highly scenic):

Multnomah Falls just off I-84 and maybe 10 miles from Portland is the 5th highest waterfall in the U.S. at 620 feet.

I predict that The FRAT BOYS must have won this race coz from the very beginning Phil Keoghan was rooting for TEAM DANDREW. If you checked carefully Keoghan's words about DANDREW,they are his favorites.

Anyone consider the light and shadows at the Pittock Mansion?

The east elevation of the building is brightest during Ken and Tina's run across the lawn, less bright during Nick and Starr's appearance and least bright when Dan and Andrew show up. If I hadn't read most of the preceding posts, this would make me think Ken and Tina, at least, arrived in the morning.

And look at the shadows from their legs. Two teams seem to be running into the sun, and we know they are running to the east. That also suggests a morning arrival.

Just wondering if this was a two-day overnight thing.

It's doubtful it's a two day overnight thing. Dallas and Toni got their passports the day after and should've been able to join the teams at the finish line if it were a two day thing. Also, it was mentioned that Dallas and Toni made it to the wrap party shortly after.

I think that you are just seeing the shadows of their feet. The shadow of the rest of the body is cut off by the framing of the picture. Pretty sneaky of the producers in cutting the scene in editing.

That first cluebox could well be in Champoeg State Park, near Newberg (technically the address is across the Willamette River in St. Paul).  Could be the butte of Butteville in the background.  The trees with the trapeze thingy could easily be within Champoeg State Park.  I've done most of my marathon walk training in Champoeg the past 8 years, oodles of hours on foot there.  At any rate, that definitely isn't on Thunder Island.

But it could well be practically anywhere in NW Oregon.  That's what a 50-year old forest looks like - basically any place in NW Oregon they haven't logged since WWII.

Meanwhile, the multi-clue boxes photos are definitely on Thunder Island, after the zip line down from Bridge of the Gods.  That's some scary-crazy zip line.  Its a long WALK from Thunder Island to Bridge of the Gods (done that many, many times), let alone zipping over the wind-whipped ice-cold river.

The couple running through the airport photo - definitely Portland International Airport baggage claim.  I've spent a lot of time there as well :)

Portland in the news:

Rain or shine, Portland beckons By Lauren Viera | Chicago Tribune Staff Writer
PORTLAND, Ore.--Why everyone in the world hasn't up and moved to Portland is a mystery.

Beyond being virtually pollution-free, surrounded by lush greenery and, at 568,300 people, a manageable size, it's home to the kinds of people many folks would want as neighbors: laid back, eco-conscious city dwellers who love quality restaurants and art galleries and are as game for an evening in with a bottle of pinot as a morning hike through the woods.

Chicagoans, especially, seem to be Portlanders' kindred spirits. Between the two cities, we've got our priorities straight: We love organic food, strong coffee, independent bookstores and locally brewed beer. We like our cities near the water, preferably with a river running through them, and we don't let poor weather stand in the way of going out. We support the arts; we support our home teams. And we have killer independent music and arts scenes.

Chi-town and P-town may be two peas in a pod, but there's one defining characteristic associated with the City of Roses: rain. While sun worshipers may balk at the idea of visiting the Pacific Northwest at any time other than in its glorious 80-degree summers, Portland is arguably a year-round destination.

Head here in the fall and a light rain jacket will carry you through autumn leaf-covered streets to dozens of cafes in which to duck the drizzle. Visit Stumptown in the winter and a parka and an umbrella (though locals don't really use them) are a nice change from our snow gear, especially when there's a full agenda: Trailblazers games, movies at McMenamins' brew-and-view theaters, tax-free shopping in Nob Hill and, if you've got time, day trips to the mountains, the coast or both.

And thanks for the additional info walkingguide :thankyou:. Alas a tree is a tree, a path is a path, without a landmark of some sort we can only narrow it down to the probable Newberg area  :groan:

Our course is located in an impressive stand of 100-year-old Douglas fir trees. Our indoor facility -- styled after a Northwest Indian longhouse -- also allows us to run year-round programs. Our course was originally built by Project Adventure Inc. and has been maintained by Synergo, a leader in the field of challenge course facilitation, construction, training, and inspection.

I believe that Andrew/Dan may not have gotten onto the same flight as the other two teams. Why Andrew/Dan would not make Moscow-Domodedovo airport by about 630am to get tickets and through security could be a bad taxi ride to there. It is also possible that Ken/Tina would suffer the same fate since they checked into the pitstop slightly later.  Both teams were several hours behind Nick/Starr, who would be at the airport no later than 5am assuming a 12 hour pitstop.

Here is the best flight combination teams missing the 705am flight would be left with:
KL3105  SVO AMS  1010 1200 connecting with KL6033  AMS SEA  KL8067 1315 1435 connecting with SEA PDX  1600 1650.

Howver, the most likely outcome is that the interests of preserving a competitive Finale caused World Race Productions to alter the pitstop time to less than 12 hours in order to make sure all 3 teams are on the same plane.

Looking at the promo pictures, I would have to agree that Andrew and Dan don't get on the same flight as the other 2. Nick and Starr are exiting a plane thats bottom half is green. Andrew and Dan, however, are exiting one thats bottom half is not green. No evidence though for what flight Ken and Tina caught.

north09,

Are you sure that you are not looking at the doorway from the jetway to the terminal as opposed to the door of a plane? I almost made that same mistake last Sun night.

And I thought I heard Andrew say as their cab was leaving PDX that they beat the other teams out of the terminal. I am not sure, but I sure thought I heard that.

This picture is a pic of Starr exiting the jetway into the terminal. The door is square, which airplanesdoors have curved corners. The doors to the jetway look like they are made of aluminium and the green on them is a reflection from the carpet in the terminal. Also, if you look to the right of the door in this pic, you will see a keypad that they use to unlock the door. That can't be the fuseluge of an airplane.

Although not a Portland native, I can answer the question "the magic is in the hole" thanks ft the internet. It's The world famous Voodoo Doughnut shop located in Portland, Oregon. The Magic is in the hole. Famous for their girth, our doughnuts are made fresh with love and care.

This makes sense. Doughnut Hole!

Voodoo Doughnut
22 SW 3rd Avenue Portland Oregon, U.S.A. (note: others have earlier identified this)
Voodoo Doughnut is located just south of the Burnside bridge on SW 3rd Avenue. It is tucked safely between The Paris Theater and Berbati's Pan. Look for the red door and the glowing "Cruller Chandelier of Life" blazing through the windows. Get unique donuts and a marriage while learning Swahili. Try the maple bacon bar - yes, that's real bacon on a donut.

My guess is that the AR13 task will be the Tex-Ass Challenge, which I assume to be something about eating a lot of doughnuts.

After watching Amazing Race since the first season, and seeing them travel to wonderful places around the world, it was great to see them come to Newberg, where I grew up.  In fact, the logging skill competition, at Tilikum is 7 miles northwest of Newberg, as the crow flies, and is only 3 miles from where I grew up.  It was really cool to actually see places I've been to many times on the show!

It was funny that the Frat Boys got a taxi driver that took them far out of the way to get to Newberg!  The way they went had to double the travel time!  When they weren't shooting themselves in the foot, they had really bad luck added to it!

Congratulations to Ken and Starr!  I was really happy they won!  I love brother & sister teams, as I've thought it would be fun to be on the show with my sister, if it weren't for my tendency to get motion sickness a lot!

In an interview today by Oscar Dahl of Buddy TV, Starr reponded to a question about "what didn't get wshown on the race" with:
S: I got a speeding ticket in New Zealand.

N: Oh yeah, we got a 30-minute penalty on the New Zealand leg. We had to sit with the sheep while Phil interviewed us.

S: We were headed out of a town—or maybe we were headed into a town. But regardless, the speed limit dropped about forty miles and I was going too fast. So we get pulled over, I get a ticket. We continue on our way to do the Kiwi and the Blokart challenge. Once we get to the mat, I think we came in fifth. And Phil said, “You are the fifth team to arrive. However, because of your ticket you have a 30-minute penalty.”

Thanks to Marigold providing an article of a Buddy TV interview with Nick and Starr, we now have the following information:

Nick/Starr won by 11 minutes over Ken/Tina
Nick/Starr won by 90 minutes over Andrew/Dan
Toni/Dallas showed up at 1030pm at the cast party in Portland the evening of April 14. That means that my belief that they left SVO at 220pm and arrived PDX 2115 had to be correct.

I have been thinking about and reading about the AR13 Finale. One aspect of it that has mostly escaped comment until now was the taxi impact on the finish:

1. First, Andrew and Dan got an incompetent taxi driver and were more than an hour back at the first task (Tilikum).
2. Second Ken/Tina and Nick/Starr were neck and neck nearing Portland after the "fill in the game board" task. Nick/Starr's taxi peeled off left and got to Standard Plaza first. They had a lead over Ken/Tina arriving minutes later that they never relinquised.
3. All that Nick/Starr needed to get to Pittoch Mansion first was to get a taxi quickly and for its driver to know how to get to Pittoch Mansion. Both of those factors happened. It looked like Ken/Tina lost more time at the "get a cab" step.
4. The team that was eliminated in the second Moscow leg, Toni/Dallas, got that result from the problems Dallas had keeping things together in the cab ride from the bookstore to the Bulgakov Museum.

I agree on the taxis. Too much left to chance.

Imagine if, instead of the whole Voodoo Donuts thing, the team could have been instructed to find a west-bound light rail train to Washington Park, get off in the tunnel station, take the elevator up to the park, and then run the two miles or so through the forest to the Pittock Mansion using the somewhat primitive mapboard to get there.

And imagine if they could have been required to look for a clue in the Chinese Garden downtown or in the Japanese Garden in Washington Park.

Lots of missed opportunties.
