This page (http://kazakhstan.orexca.com/eagle_hunting_kazakhstan.shtml) states the Sunkar falcon farm is in the Alma-Arasan gorge south of the city; after doing a little translating ("Kennel hunting birds and dogs"), I'll make a guess and say it's here (http://www.wikimapia.org/3119658/ru/%D0%9F%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA).

From this photo in this thread (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17615.msg355818.html#msg355818) , Slowhatch says "Don't laugh but it looks like a minaret to me. I looked around Almaty but didn't see anything similar"

Slowhatch adds the photo below as well as more details:

According to the map (http://expat.nursat.kz/?1530), the area behind Nur Mubarak/Nur Mosque (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2831548180101015314qTpTXC)/Egypt Cultural Centre is described as Al-Farabi Kazakh National University and "Botanic Garden (http://expat.nursat.kz/?532)." She looks a little sad in the confessional; maybe they're out, or maybe it was just a long day.

Boingo already found the dombira. The hat is a Kalpak (see here (http://www.discovery-central-asia.com/archive/2006/sum17.php) and here (http://www.kazakhstan-tourist.com/page.php?page_id=522&lang=2)), but it is worn throughout Central Asia not just KZ. I'm not sure about those small items in front.

it is and the title of this episode said it all!  I do believe the frat boys will take it, and besides they have good stomach than the rest of the  teams.

And finally, this episode will feature Kazakhstan w/c the infamous home country of Borat, and we'll gonna see it what really looks like as contrast to his movie. :meow:

If the frat boys get to Kazakhstan, they'll take it.  The question is -- will they get to Kazakhstan or will they be Philiminated in India?

I wonder if the title refers to someone's fear of getting mad cow disease from eating goat brains?

I have a suspicion, nothing more, that the incident that sparks the title occurs in Delhi where cows are all over the place and not in Kazakhstan. Maybe it refers to blockages of traffic just taking a wild stab at it.

And T/S VS N/S, which we know if T/S took it, they might put N/S behind. But if N/S took it.. then they are going to win 4 legs in a row. TAR's first..

My .02 for the title. I think Dan or Andrew says about how stupid the he was being as they make up.

From CBS (no video yet):
Quote
I'm Like An Angry Cow
Racers have a close encounter of the bird kind when 30,000 chickens cross their road to the pit stop. Teams encounter Mongol warriors and receive clues via Falcon Delivery. In a haste to avoid elimination, one team leaves behind something very important. And a team takes a huge risk only to find they can’t stomach the meat from a sheep’s rear.

*In a haste to avoid elimination, one team leaves behind something very important

Is this Dan/Andrew's "terrible Mistake"?? It seems too soon for the "prevents someone from joining their teammates at the finish line " mistake though...or is  it?

*And a team takes a huge risk only to find they can’t stomach the meat from a sheep’s rear.

What happened to the Sheep's Head??

:eww You HAD to post that, Chateau? :funny:

I have to wonder about Sarah and Terence here. Sarah keeps kosher I believe, and aren't they vegetarian?  ???

yes-- from here:

Sarah keeps kosher and Terence is a vegetarian--maybe even vegan-ish--and, yes, a super healthy eater.

I think that totally depends on how much time would be needed to get back onto the regular tasks. If it's less than 15 minutes, then maybe turn around and leave the FF. I'll bet it's more than that so they are effectively stuck if Terence/Sarah were the first to arrive at the FastForward.

I think Nick/Starr and Toni/Dallas would be foolish to take the risk of inter-team competition and then the risk of not being able to finish the Fast Forward. Of course this logic applies to Terence/Sarah too and they may not follow this logic in their desire for a first place leg finish.

Don't forget in TAR7 during the meat eating challenge, Rob knew he could not eat 70 lbs. of meat so he managed to convince two other teams to take the four hour penalty. Sometimes, it's worth taking the penalty if you can play the Jedi Mind Trick that Rob did.

So it must be a road block right before the pitstop then....I say that because of this:

Quote
Racers have a close encounter of the bird kind when 30,000 chickens cross their road to the pit stop.

I wonder if T/S get to the FF first and can't do it, and that is how they get eliminated. It will be sad if that's true because I think Andrew and Dan are awful racers and seriously need to be kicked out. Once they are gone any of the remaining teams would be great winners.

and then a clue that could really put a team behind if that team has to track back

From the excellent screen caps in Post #33, it looks like Terrance and Sarah are having a "should we quit" conversation.  The huge risk might be them quitting the FF challenge.

I get the impression from Terrance and Sarah's confessional that they are safe.

so it now looks like Dallas and Toni make it to at least Leg 8 Almaty, Kazakhstan which should put them in the final 5.

From this photo in this thread (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17615.msg355818.html#msg355818) , Slowhatch says "Don't laugh but it looks like a minaret to me. I looked around Almaty but didn't see anything similar"

Toni & Dallas look like they might be in the Green Bazar (Zeleny Bazar) which also next to the Great Mosque where the pit stop seems to be. This site has some good info on the sights with maps too.
http://infokz.com/city/eng/walk_greenbazar.php
Another way to continue your walk after the Park is to visit the Green Bazaar (Zeleny Bazaar). If you were brave enough to come to Almaty, you should not lose the chance to see Almaty’s main bazaar, experience its eastern atmosphere, colors, smells and crowds. Of course, beware of thieves and watch your wallet.

obvious Fast Foward! *FIXED!*

Long time lurker and admirer, first time poster. This fits in with a suspicion I had earlier. That quote about one team not making it to the finish line never said that it was one of the final 3 teams. If the team finishing in 5th or 4th place lost their passports, it is very unlikely that they would have been able to get replacements soon enough to be able to re-enter the USA in time for the end of the race. It could be that we do have 3 teams racing together in the finale.

I think it's the first one you mentioned. I heard Tina say "alel agro chicken factory," which spots it here (http://infokz.com/base/eng/view.php?id=4927&p=1) (for some reason, I can't connect with the expat street map I had been using). The company website is here (http://www.almatykus.kz/) (no Eng version that I could find). Almaty Kus is the company, Alel is the brand.

Almaty Kus is the company, Alel is the brand.
but you already knew that   :jam:

Here is my guess at where the Pit Stop is.  It's opposite the Old Government House that they drove the crane past.

Notice that the lamps are the same.

I can see that happening Chateau

And maybe part of the Roadblock, like you mentioned, is taking the golden egg to point b to get your next clue to the Detour?

So maybe the Nomads and Falcon are window dressings, like the teams first task of the day?
Hit hours of operation
Roadblock/Golden Egg = we see Toni and Tina egging it
>> Cranes (maybe a part of the Roadblock?)= we see Toni and Dallas / Dandrew
Fast Forward/ sheep ass = Nick and Starr / Terence and Sarah
one Detour dress up like a cow in search of a milk stand
possible Detour, something to do with the cranes or something to do with the Nomads and Falcon

This may not be conclusive, but the red clue here make it look like the crane task is a Roadblock.

Also, cranes are parked at the gate where the teams are waiting to get in.

Первомайская Промзона (1st of May Street?)
Илийский район (Iliiskii district)

It's bringing up other businesses in the vicinity, but no location yet... :'(

I'm quite confused about which is the Roadblock. The website clue says the golden egg is. But Andrew and Dan seems to be holding on to a Roadblock clue on the truck.

And what are the two Detours?
The truck and the cow?

I think it is very possible that there could be a U-TURN, since i think it is very easy to find the egg. And the cow thingy might be idiot proof?

You have to think that that gentleman with Andrew in the cab is a driver who responds to the directions that he is given. In other words, Dan/Andrew have to provide the navigation, probably to the remote site where the falcons are.

apskip,

I did see the driver in the picture .  But I am curious who is wearing the light blue coat in the bottom left of the picture.

My thinking is that if both Dan and Andrew are in the crane, it is not a Roadblock, but rather a different task.  And that the cranes would be after the Roadblock.

gator 27,

My guess is that it is Dan or the soundman. The angle the picture is taken makes it almost impossible for the cameraman to be sitting in that position indicated by the blue coat.

mswood, you can cry if you wish. However, the only team that appears certain to be in the final 3 is Nick/Starr. That currently leaves 4 teams fighting for the other 2 spots. After Sunday the odds will be 3 teams fighting for 2 spots(unless it is NEL which I don't expect). The reason for the lack of information is presumably related to having few blogs from people in or visiting Moscow from around May 10 to 13.

Thanks for the preview link. How funny is it that Starr seems to have a stronger stomach than Nick? And Terrence may be explaining why they chose to abandon the FF.

My thought is that Starr has a weaker stomach.  It seems to me that Starr is not eating and is coaching Nick.

Maybe Starr didn't want to do FF and Nick said he would eat it all so they could win FF.

Both of their plates look empty and clean.  Maybe those are just base plates for the dish the food is served in.  It also could be at the end of eating and Starr is okay but Nick is about to loose it and Starr is telling him it's okay.

The host of TAR was on Extra and said one couple lost some valuables and important documentation and therefore was not able to continue. He also went on to say that they made sure the couple got home, that they have never stranded anyone anywhere in the 13 seasons of the Race

http://www.cbs.com/forum/posts/list/15/15348.page

I will have to favor the loss of their passports. They are kept in that special fanny pac with all the other documents they have to keep safe, like route markers and detour/roadblock clues. If they lost that bag, then at a minimum it would be 48 hours to get a new passport re-issued so they could continue on. By then the production company crews would be so far down the race, that the route markers/detours/roadblocks would have been finished. It sounds to me like it took so long to resolve, that they couldnt even get to the finish line to join in the finish.

I think Starr finishes before Nick and then starts coaching him.  You can see in pictures of T & Sarah that they each have a plate of "food".  So for the FF each team member must clean their plate. :iok

Hmmm.  What if the team that lost what we are presuming to be passports are not the last team to the PitStop?  Are you Philiminated if you do not bring all your race clues?

How about this:  Team Lose your Passport arrives 4th.  Team in 5th Philiminated.  At teh start of the next leg, Team Lose your Passport cannot get out of K-stan, thus are Philiminated.

Or this:  Team Lose your Passport arrives 4th.  Team in 5th arrives, but Phil tells them he has good and bad news.  The bad news is that you are last.  The good news, one team was dumb enough to lose their passports and are stuck in K-stan for a few days, so you get to continue on the race!

48 hours to issue a passport. I think from Kazakstan to 2 legs in Moscow. It fits perfectly?

Imagine if a team lost their passports and got eliminated on Leg 8 because of it..

And TAR fly to Moscow, completed a leg. Another 12 hours pitstop.
And completed another leg and another 12 hours pitstop.

That's even less than 2 days in total. (Teams won't need a total of 24 hours to complete the 2 legs worth of tasks?)

And if they are flying back to USA. I think the left behind team in Kazakstan, after finally getting their passports after 2 days.. will be on a race to find a flight back to USA when the final 3 teams are also flying back to USA as well? I think they might just miss joining the final 3 at the finishing line.

Anyone can check for the number of flights leaving Kazakstan to USA per day and how long does it take? I don't really know how to do flight checking..

Although it's sad to be eliminated like that..

But the best scenario for me now would be -

Phil: Andrew and Dan, you're team number #1!
Andrew: We beat the Fast Forward!
Dan: Dang! We're good racers!
Andrew: I told you we rock and we are faster than everyone else! I told you!!
Phil: :res: However, the both of you lost your passports. Thus you won't be able to continue on with the race and i'm sorry that both of you are the first team to arrive, first team to lose passports on the race and first team to be eliminated by such a dumb mistake. Bye bye. :waves:

OK, so here's a completely hypothetical (yet strangely plausible) scenario:
Nick & Starr and Terence & Sarah go for the FF.  N&S finish first (appears that way from the photos too) and take off. T&S realizing they've lost and have to go back and do the detour, take off in a huge hurry and leave their fanny pack under ther table - they're probably sick and nauseous at this stage anyways.  They do the detour, finishing (unsurprisingly) ahead of the hapless loserboys.  Phil tells them, "You're 4th team to arrive. Congratulations you're still in the race!".  And they hug and kiss and cheer and then take off their backpacks to kick back and relax- and find their fanny pack is gone!

Meanwhile the loserboys arrive and Phil tells them " You're in last place. But the good news is your incredible luck has triumphed over your (vast) ineptitude yet again, and I reluctantly have to tell you you're still in the race".

And then Philiminates T&S.  :'(

Meanwhile the loserboys arrive and Phil tells them " You're in last place. But the good news is your incredible luck has triumphed over your ineptitute yet again, and I reluctantly have to tell you you're still in the race".  And then Philiminates T&S.  :'(

Interesting.  We are all focus on DAndrew being the ones who lose their passports (BVM interview).  Maybe it is actually another team. :duno:

I'm just going by the fact that Dandrew are actually seen in Portland, whereas T&S aren't seen again (yes, there's a brown haired pair that IS seen, but that could be Toni & Dallas?)

*EDIT* Although I went back & read the description and it DOES sound more like T&S :
"i don't recognize the teams i saw from any of those pics- the couple (i am assuming that by the way- could be bro/ sis) she had dark hair, he had dark blond hair.  very fit and looked like the had just climbed a mtn."

But I still like my scenario - maybe Belle Book could use it in a future episode

Do we know people loose a passport in this leg or the next.  Because that sounds more like the blunder that costs a team from finishing the final leg.

Everyone is assuming from this clue "in a haste to avoid elimination, one team leaves behind something very important" that it is this leg. For all we know its the golden egg or something.

If the teams lose their passports here in Almaty, they still would have time to get a replacement from the Embassy (in emergencies it only takes a few hours to get a replacement) and then the teams would be able to still reach the finish line in Portland, OR.  But the advance info is that because they lose the passports they can't join the rest of the teams at the finish line.  So I assume they must lose them on the penultimate leg in Moscow.  Perhaps they are part of the final three, and realize they have lost their passports when they try to leave Moscow in the race of the final three to the finish line.  No way hoozay will the Reds let someone leave the country without their passports and entry visas.

I was thinking that shot of Dandrew fighting on the grass is them lost looking for something.  What is an episode this season without Dandrew racing trying to avoid elimination.

For the D/T and T/S confessionals it's possible:

Terrence is using the fact that he's a vegan/vegetarian as an reason why they didn't finish the FF fast enough.  And maybe got eliminated.

Dallas may be doing the same thing in that he was praising his mom and then added that he doesn't expect her to go all out all of the time.  Possibly Toni took too long to find the golden egg which resulted in them being eliminated.

I feel that it's totally up in the air as to who is eliminated this week.  It seems the only for sure to not be eliminated is N/S and probably K/T.

I guess they can always throw in another NEL? Mix it up you know?
Again.. last season the first FF came in leg 5 and went unused
The second FF came at leg 7, Don and Nicks tattoos and it was a NEL.
The second NEL came in leg 9 ....

What I'm saying is maybe we can expect the unexpected?

Season 13
First FF leg 5
NEL leg 6
Second FF leg 8
Second NEL? << I'm expecting it to be the next leg but isn't that obvious? predictable?

UZBEK CUISINE

ALASHA RESTAURANT: One of the very authentic restaurants to go in the city. Uzbek dances, live music. Good atmosphere, excellent design.

Marat Ospanov street, 20. Close to Dostyk ave corner. +7(727) 2540700

plates

Looking at some of the food on the plate it looks like this sounds:

"Traditionally Kazakh cuisine offers many meat dishes. One of the most popular dishes is kuirdak - hot fatty dish made from roasted sheep's liver, kidney, heart, lungs and fat."

My source - http://www.sairamtour.com/centralasia/ca_05_2.html

My question to you map experts, how far out of the way is the FF challenge?  Would Terrence and Sarah lose much time traveling to and from FF to the next task?

Well, I don't think I'm a "map expert" but I don't think it's that far. According to the map on the Alasha site, (http://www.alasha.kz/images/contact4eng.gif)http://www.alasha.kz/index.php?opt=contact
it's at the corner of Ospanov and Dostyk, right before where Dostyk crosses the river.

On this map (mostly in Russian http://infokz.com/city/eng/empall.htm) you can see Dostyk Av (in Russian looks like AOcTblk!) crossing the river at the top right side, with a street leading off it, which might be Ospanov (not marked).  Downtown is to the left with the Cathedral, Green Bazar  and park at the left end of Dostyk.
The downtown only map in English is here -  Almaty downtown http://infokz.com/city/eng/empcen.htm

OMG Neobie. That's too funny.  :funny: As for the reason why they chose a flightless bird...that is pretty obvious....the RNZAF hardly fly themselves, so having an emblem which flies even less makes them feel better

Quote
Almaty region, Iliiskii district, Pervomaiskaya Promzona, Almaty ptitsefabrika
. I found this company (http://www.burundaiavia.kz/?lan=en&id=93) that claims an airport in the same district. The wikimap is here (http://www.wikimapia.org/1912149/Burundai-Airport). There's an industrial area north of the airport that has possibilites; if someone could find Pervomaiskaya village that would help in finding the battery farm ("ptitsefabrika").

If it helps with the searches, the rough address of the chicken farm is:

Первомайская Промзона (1st of May Street?)
Илийский район (Iliiskii district)

It's bringing up other businesses in the vicinity, but no location yet... :'(

Bye bye. :waves:

 :jumpy:

That would be so hilarious!   :funny:  Though probably not for Andrew & Dan, of course.

:yess:  Here's a clip from a Bangkok tourist blurb (http://www.bangkokpost.com/210808_Horizons/21Aug2008_hori001.php) about travel to Kazakstan...

Quote
Almaty in Kazakhstan's south is its largest city which was its capital from 1929-98 when it was moved north to Astana. Almaty shares a border with China which is around four to five hours drive from downtown. Around 100kms before you reach the border, or 193 kilometres east of the town, there is a popular tourist stop: the Charyn Canyon.

It is 80kms long through which runs the Charyn River. The height of the canyon is 150-300 metres. Locals go there for picnic. They lay down mats along the edge and enjoy meals, the windy atmosphere and strong sunshine because there is no shade from trees.

Kazakhs relish horse meat. They cook it the same way as beef and it is also sold in supermarkets in the form of sausage or salami, cured meat or ready-to-eat sandwiches and pastries. Horses raised as a source of meat are tended differently from those reared for riding.

To the south of Almaty is another popular picnic spot, Turgen Gorge in Ili-Alatau National Park, 90kms from downtown. The place is famous for its waterfalls, hot springs and a rainbow trout farm.

"I can guarantee you that any one coming here can catch a trout," said Alexander Yexhov, our tour guide.

The trick is, he said, that the farm lets the fish go hungry so that no matter what you drop in the stream , they will go for the bait and swallow. Many people with baits in hand could be seen lining a small cold stream waiting for their moment. After a short while I spotted a seven-year old boy trap his first trout of the day, it was that easy, and he screamed in excitement. The farm also has a restaurants selling deep fried trout. Other activities available to visitors are horse riding or touring the area in a horse-drawn carriage.

Kazakhstan is also well-known for its falcons. "People from the Middle East, especially the United Arab Emirates, come here to buy birds of prey. There was a flourishing black market for the birds until the government decreed a law to protect them," said our guide, adding that now owners of hawks and falcons are required to obtain a licence from the government.

A privately-run falcon farm was established in 1989 to breed and train the birds and later opened to tourists. "Around 600 falcons or 70 percent of the birds raised at the farm have been allowed to go free," he explained.

On view are many types of falcons segregated in cages depending on species. The golden eagle, the country's national symbol, is a major attraction. One of them, we saw, had brown feathers and proud penetrating eyes. Our guide said it was trained specially to hunt in tandem with a Russian dog whom he named as Tazi.

Beside nature, there are several places in Almaty where you can enjoy a walk. You can start at Panfilov Park and visit the Ascension Church, also called Zenkov Cathedral. Built in 1904, the church is made entirely of wood without a single nail in its structure. Behind the church is Glory Memorial Park with its eternal flame. It was built to honour those who sacrificed their lives during WWII. In the park area is a museum featuring musical instruments sourced from every part of the country.

From the park you can walk to Green Bazaar, the city's main open-air market where you can buy local handicraft, dry fruits, nuts, chocolate and fresh meats, including horse meat.

But you are not allowed to take pictures. Security officers roam the market to make sure the ban is enforced. I even spotted some of them tailing our group after they saw us carrying cameras and video recorders, and I couldn't help wondering that it was 17 years ago the country broke free from Russia, but that siege mentality still persists.

Since Kazakhstan only recently opened its doors to tourism, travel packages there are a tad pricey. But it seems destined to become a major tourist destination in due course, given the lifestyle of its people and beautiful nature that are bound to leave lasting impressions on travellers to this Central Asian nation.

:2cents: I agree, the falcon business (do they bother to go to the Sunkar farm? probably not, the horses need room to do their thing) is just route info. The cavalry (as well as most of the stuff we saw in the introflashes) is just window dressing. Still not sure about Dandrew walking the boonies.

The FF is most likely the first clue.

And i believe the Detour is before the Roadblock? I think it is mentioned that the 30,000 chickens is a Roadblock, while another clue says teams pass many chickens to the pitstop?

Am i right? :duno:

The Roadblock has to be first, we hear Tina at the airport getting in the cab say go to Alel Agro chicken plant and then we see the teams bunched at the gate, the person letting them in the gate is wearing the white overalls and green foot thngys that we see Tina slip on.

The Fast Forward is at Alel Agro cluebox so is before @ the Roadblock. Phil even says "a fast forward race determines who jumps ahead ..", watch the videos.

Horse & carriage

Probably pretty shots of Almaty, a filler.

If the first task is a ROADBLOCK at the Chicken Factory  - to find the golden egg - why is Dan holding a RED ROADBLOCK ENVELOPE in his hand when he and Andrew are riding in the cab of the red crane truck (they are lost and can't find their way to wherever they are going.)

And I wonder what the shot of the three peasant women sitting on the bench means.  They each place a coin into the hand of someone passing by.

At least TPTB hid Terrance behind a tree when he throws up whatever he managed to eat.

And one unaccounted for shot of Andrew and Dan following a marked path (not orange and yellow arrow on a stake in bg) heading to wherever the horsemen are (and they probably are native Kazaks, and not Mongolian)

The confessional is here about the 8:30 mark

Dallas: when I ask my mom to step it up, she does, shes able to push herself, there's times where she needs a break and uh, and I wouldn't expect her to go all out all the time

I'd say Terance & Sarah's is later than Toni & Dallas.  Both are very close to sunset at 8 pm.

They might just have that envelope out because the teams are supposed to keep all their clues before they check in at the Pit Stop. It could still be from earlier in the leg.

Maybe they have to deliver the golden egg by crane GMan and that why we see the red clue  :funny:? or maybe they haven't put the clue away yet? they don't discard them after the task so? I dunno! I'm hoping for some new scenes during the ND/Navy game!

Maybe they get the Roadblock clue with the FF clue.

Nick/Starr and Terrance/Sarah both dont do the RB and go for the FF

Thus when Terrance and Sarah loose they have to "go back" because they need to do the roadblock back at the place they left.   Otherwise Terrance saying "we need to go back" makes no sense.

Teams usually get the roadblock clue with whatever task is first for the leg.

In this one its the one where we see the race between Andrew & Dan and Nick & Starr for grabbing the clue (no idea who opens it first, since both partners must be near them to do so).

Sarah looks like a zombie in that pic lol ^
and also...i don't see how Terrence & Sarah could recover from the FF, especially against Toni & Dallas who have one of the ebst placements on this season, coming in 2nd or 3rd for the past few legs. I do believe Nick and Starr achieve the FF, putting them in first, breaking records.

1. Nick & Starr

There is no evidence as to where Ken & Tina is, so i figure they probably have a really good leg if they aren't featured in any of the previews.

2. Ken & Tina

I don't think there is a U-Turn on this leg. There would be no chance for the team with the fast forward to use it, they never put those things on the same leg. So Toni & Dallas should have pretty smooth sailing. I also checked the weather reports for Almaty on that day and it seems it was sunny earlier on and then overcast came in later, and its clear that Toni & Dallas have a sunny interview, putting them ahead of T&S

3. Toni & Dallas

As much as i'd love to see Dandrew get the hell out of the game, i think T&S were a little unlucky here. However, in their interview they look happy as hell. And knowing Terrence, he'd be whining like a complete baby. So it's either non-elimination(which is not the case) or T&S are safe. The other thing is maybe they are talking about losing their passports, laughing it off.

4. Terrence & Sarah
5. Dan & Andrew - Eliminated

perhaps its wishful thinking there. But one of the above two i'm almost certain will come in last. Otherwise this race is just not worth watching Dandrew come in second last!

* May i add that Phil said a team that always makes dumb mistakes will not finish the race because of it. I would guess this is T&S because on the second leg they totally bipassed the taxi parking lot and waited for a long time doing nothing. And in the episode prior to this, they went through the bird pens, shifting through the birdseed to find a clue.

i'd also like to add this from www.ctv.ca
-Racers have a close encounter of the bird kind when 30,000 chickens cross their road to the pit stop. Teams encounter Mongol warriors and receive clues via Falcon Delivery. In a haste to avoid elimination, one team leaves behind something very important. And a team takes a huge risk only to find they can't stomach the meat from a sheep's rear.

Exactly Chateau. This is not the actual pitstop, well most likely not, as pointed out by Chateau, rather its a place where they set them up to do interviews. No way to know which team is ahead of what team but it gives us some hope

In TAR history it seems that even a team lost the FF battle still managed to survive in that leg.

For example:
TAR 4 - Kelly/Jon in Malaysia (beat by Richien/Chip), finished 4 out of 5
TAR 6 - Jonathan/Victora in France (beat by Adam/Rebecca), finished 5 out of 6
TAR 7 - Rob/Amber in South Africa (beat by Ray/Deana), finished 5 out of 7
TAR 9 - Joseph/Monica in Greece (beat by Eric/Jeremy), finished 2 out of 6
TAR 9 - Ray/Yolanda in Thailand (beat by BJ/Tyler), finished 3 out of 4

So even Nick/Starr or Terence/Sarah failed to win the FF, from statistics it does not necessarily mean that they would get eliminated.

Good statistics. But at the same time, are there any teams who went for the FF and got eliminated because they didn't get it? I know Brandon and Nicole didn't get their FF and wasn't eliminated. Nobody snatched the FF with Nic/Don, Tyler/James, Rob/Kim and David/Mary got their own FF, Oswald/Danny and Uchenna/Joyce got their own FF as well. Maybe... a season of firsts remember?

Well. Maybe not. Momily got eliminated (dang, they could have not been eliminated) because they missed the FF. :(

In my mind, I don't remember any situation where a team was eliminated in a FF fight.
Brandon/Nicole's case is different because they just gave up but not beat by another team.
Nancy/Emily could have survived even losing the FF, they were eliminated because of other mistake (not finishing detour).

And here are more examples:
Derek/Drew in TAR 3 failed to get the FF in Leg 1 (Mexico) but still avoided elimination, finished 11 out of 12.
Andrew/Dan failed to get the FF in New Zealand (Leg 4) but finished 6 out of 8.

I remember that only Mary/Peach were eliminated because of not getting the FF in Hong Kong.

i'd also like to add this from www.ctv.ca
- In a haste to avoid elimination, one team leaves behind something very important. And a team takes a huge risk only to find they can't stomach the meat from a sheep's rear.

Perhaps the thing left behind is the Golden Egg which teams were supposed to carry with them to the pit stop.  In past TARs teams have located something and had to carry it with them to the end.

The unprecedented mistake thread is here (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,16823.0.html) if you all want to make a guess whatever there.

Eggs today, passports next week?!?!?!

There are a couple of puppet theaters in Almaty: one public, one private. I'm guessing the one they used is right across the street (http://www.wikimapia.org/1954376/Puppet-Theatre) from Panfilov park.

okay so if one team is supposed to not finish the race because they constantly make stupid mistakes, than its Dan & Andrew, and why else would they not finish the race. I'm guessing they lose their passports!

Boot List:
1. Toni & Dallas
2. Nick & Starr
3. Dan & Andrew
4. Ken & Tina
5. Terrence & Sarah
6. Kelly & Christy
7. Aja & Ty
8. Marissa & Brooke
9. Mark & Bill
10. Anthony & Stephanie
11. Anita & Arthur

I am almost 99% certain that the winners will be Nick & Starr or Toni & Dallas. However, in the interview with Nick at Pittock Mansion, i noticed no significat happiness when talking about dallas and starr. I will assume Toni & Dallas take it as of now. But Nick & Starr still have a chance at winning

puddin, how many Amazing Race finales have been won by teams who shouldn't have won them?
Zach/Flo, Chip/Kim, Freddie/Kendra, Uchenna/Joyce, Eric/Danielle are all in that category to my way of classifying.
Nick/Starr have to be considered favorites, but nobody ever has a lock on an Amazing Race finale. World Race Productions works too hard to put in random elements in the finale which give every F3 team a legitimate shot.

Has anyone noted that our spoiler (many pages ago) noted that he saw a team at the Dubai airport? Looks like he must have seen Dan and Andrew since they were on a flight connecting there on the way to Almaty.  And all those flights must have taken up a lot of time via Frankfurt and Moscow.  For instance, the flight to Moscow left at 04.30 hours and reached Almaty at 01.20. hours the next day  So this accounts for one of our missing days.  We see shots of Nick and Starr and Dallas and Toni boarding two different airplanes, one of which is a daylight boarding.

Can't any of these teams read clues and instructions correctly?  Both Ken and Tina and Dan and Andrew really screwed up and could have been eliminated if Terrance and Sarah had quit the FF as soon as they saw what they had to eat.  But Terrance's determination cost them the game.

I think the Dubai sighting was May 6th? I'd have to look for it Gman.
Also Dan & Andrew were not racing to the chicken farm gates! It was edited to make it seem so.
When they are running they have red clue in hand and if you watch the insider clips they had time to mingle, the other racers slept in these Mongolian Huts, I can't remember what they are called.

Hello TAR Detectives,

What a great forum. You guys are amazing. I do have a question and hope this is the right place to add it. Does anyone know what kind of bird was used in the falonry? I am assuming it was a golden eagle due to the size and after doing some research on Kazak falonry sites. But, I am not an ornithologist, so it could be a large goshawk too. I read where they are doing breeding on goshawks to increase the size of the birds in Kazakstan. Thanks for your time.

GMAN, you are confused on the flights times. I have SU634 to Moscow as actually leaving DELHI at 0450 even though it is now listed as 0430. It arrives in Moscow just before 0900 local time. The return flight LH648 left Moscow at 1320(your 1:20 pm is correct, just not for what you said) and arrived Almaty at 0110+1, 110am.
What accounts for a missisng day is a 36 hour extended pitstop after leg 7 in Delhi.

EDITOR'S NOTE - I was confused on this(thinking that i had it all in my head from the work done in this area when I did not have in my head error-free), as Chateau has noted above. It is Lufthansa 648 from Frankfurt that leaves at 1320. As stated in an earlier I have no route from Moscow to Almaty other than ones that are way too early or way too late for what. I will guess that Chateau is right about Turkish Airliens form Istanbul only because by reverse engineering there is nothign else that fits.

This references the Sunkar site that we think handled this, so a golden eagle seems very possible! I just assumed a falcon of some sort so now I am even more awed..

Falcons Fly Home by Modern Means
Javid Hassan, Arab News

RIYADH, 18 May 2004 — In an effort to reintroduce 41 falcons into their natural habitat, a special mission will take off today to air freight the birds to the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan at the initiative of Prince Sultan, second deputy premier and minister of defense and aviation.

Veterinary Dr. Jamie Samour, medical director of Fahd ibn Sultan Falcon Center, told Arab News that the falcons are being released into a protected area of Kazakhstan, where they originally came from.

The birds belong to a species known as Saker, indigenous to that country and are worth between SR5,000 and SR500,000 each.

Last year, 28 birds were flown to Kazakhstan under what is known as the Prince Sultan Falcon Release Program in Central Asia. Most of the birds were donated to Prince Sultan by Saudi hunters.

Why would anyone want to use eagles or goshawks as falcons when Kazakhstan received a gift of a select small number (28) of real falcons 4 years ago?

I am assuming it was a golden eagle due to the size and after doing some research on Kazak falonry sites. But, I am not an ornithologist, so it could be a large goshawk too. I read where they are doing breeding on goshawks to increase the size of the birds in Kazakstan. Thanks for your time.
Welcome DrRox :hithere:. Moi knew it was a hunting eagle  (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,17652.msg353871.html#msg353871)  :sucks

Thanks puddin!!

Sounds like 10 centuries of well respected tradition to me:

Hunting with Golden Eagles is one of the most unique features of Kazakh life. The hunter is named kusbegi or berkutchi. The experience of wild bird training was gained by Kazakh kusbegi over centuries, the secrets being passed from the father to the son and kept secret. At the present time there are few people with such a name. These masters have an innate gift for training wild birds. For hunting they tame falcons, golden eagles and eagles. Names of birds are given depending on their appearance and battle characteristics. Hunting with Golden Eagles has been going on for ten centuries. To present a teenager with a nestling of a hunting bird was considered to wish to him to begin the courageous, strong dzhigit. To train a golden eagle is a high art. The caught bird gradually becomes accustomed to the owner. To do this, the berkutchi some nights doesn't close his eyes and prevents the golden eagle from sleeping. The bird can eat (bits of uncooked meat) only from the hands of the owner. Afterwards, the bird will get used to the hunter, his horse and dog, and the berkutchi begins to train it to hunt for stuffed fox; only after this the real hunting begins. Specially trained golden eagles hunt for small animals: rabbits, foxes, partridge, and black hazel grouses.

The return flight LH648 left Moscow at 1320(your 1:20 pm is correct, just not for what you said) and arrived Almaty at 0110+1, 110am.

I thought LH 648 was flying out of Frankfurt.

I think Terence & Sarah's trip from Moscow to Almaty made a stop in Istanbul.  It's the only flight that lands in Almaty at 1:20 am.   And we have the gate agent telling them that is the time when they land in Almaty.

Terence & Sara leaving May 9th  "It will be landing in Almaty at 1:20 in the night."
Take Aeroflot SU 536 leaving DEL at 4:30 am and arriving in SVO Moscow  at 9:30 am
Take Turkish Airlines TK 1414 leaving SVO at 1:40 pm and arriving in IST Istanbul at 3:55 pm
Take TK 1352  leaving IST at 5:00 pm and arriving in ALA at 1:20 am on May 10th

Why would anyone want to use eagles or goshawks as falcons when Kazakhstan received a gift of a select small number (28) of real falcons 4 years ago?

I was pretty aware of people in the US using perigrine falcons and goshawks for hunting. Some people even use snow owls too. Apparently, snow owls have a pretty unique ability to bend their wings when flying through trees in the winter time to hunt. I have seen nature documentaries about this in areas where there is lots of birch type tree forests. After doing some internet research last night and this morning, the term "falconry" seems to have become a pretty generic term for using birds of prey to hunt and not specific to using only "falcons". When I was watching last night, I was sort of shocked at the size of that bird. I mean, it was huge. It seems they use the golden eagles to hunt small animals, up to the size of roe deer. As stated above, over ten centuries of use of birds of prey in Central Asia. It also makes sense that they would develop ties with the Arab bedouins. The flat treeless terrane makes perfect use for using birds of prey to hunt food.

Chateau this is from the Intouch article that marigold just posted in T/S's thread....

Sarah: We were really happy. What they didn't show on the episode last night was that we couldn't get on the flight with everyone else. We were stuck at the airport. We knew Dan and Andrew got on a crappy flight, but that was even better than what we had, which was nothing.
Terence: We almost got stuck in Moscow.
Sarah: Yeah. I felt like a lot of flights would go to Kazakhstan from Moscow, so we just needed to get ourselves to Moscow. I figured we could figure out how to get to Kazakhstan from there. In Moscow, for various reasons, we weren't allowed to leave immigration. When we couldn't get on another flight we became concerned we'd have to go back to India. By the time we arrived at the chicken factory we assumed we were so much farther behind all the other teams. When we saw them standing there we were very relieved.

FF menu. Too bad it doesn't say what the dish is.

That's probably why Terence didn't realize it was a meat dish.  It was a trap which got him.

In their interviews Sarah and Terence would not have gone for the Fast Forward had they known it was  eating meat.

Since their routing through Moscow was not planned ahead they did not have visas for entry into the Russian Federation, therefore they could not leave immigration.

TPTB must have had visas for all of the teams to enter Russia at a later date since a stop in Moscow was planned before the race actually started.  But these visas are held by the production team and the teams do not know where they will be going in advance.

TPTB must have had visas for all of the teams to enter Russia at a later date since a stop in Moscow was planned before the race actually started.  But these visas are held by the production team and the teams do not know where they will be going in advance.

This visa question is something that has intrigued me from TAR-1. Many countries require you to have the visa "stamped" in your passport before you even board a plane to that country. I do not have any idea is the Russian Federation is this way. I know they are VERY strict on advance visas. I looked at the visa section of the Russian Embassy in DC and the visa process is striking similiar to the one requred of a person going to Brasil. If you want to go to Brasil, you have to send your passport to one of their consulates in the US and get a visa stamped in the passport before you board a plane to Brasil. Brasil does this because we requre the same procedure of Brasilian citizens that want to come to the US. The Russian visa application page said the same thing. The visa for Brasil is good for entry into Brasil 90 days after it is issued. The time frames for tourist visas into Russia were much shorter in duration. I dont think they want Americans hanging around to much. The so-called Principle of Reciprosity.

The same was true of Egypt, when my parents lived there. I had to send my passport to DC to the Egyptian Embassy to get a visa stamped in it before I left. The airlines people would check to see that it was there, otherwise you never left the US.

So maybe Peach, add this question for next TARcon......ask the racers about visa stamps in their passports? I have always wondered if they knew where they were going before they left or when they left?

I think I may know the answer to this one already...

It is my understanding that the racers give their passports to production, who obtain multiple Visas, some for the countries to be visited, some as "decoys". So yes, when their passports are returned to them, they can see visas for a group of countries, but they don't know which ones of those countries will actually be visited. So they have an idea based on the possibilities, but they don't know exactly, if that makes sense? But I will be glad to ask to be sure!!

There's also a backup purpose for multiple visas. If something goes wrong in country A (politics/weather/etc.), they can proceed to destination B without taking too much of a hit.

On a different subject, it looks like they switched the start mat--again--to the lawn of the Meridien. Compare the lobby cap to this photo (http://picasaweb.google.com/albaronas/India2008#5173363379376751602). And if you check Matt's Moscow shots, you'll see sync with the Moscow Meridien location next to Red Square. TAR13 is turning into the Meridien World Tour.

Airline tickets are paid by the WRP credit card...not from the team funds.

And the 1000 was not as bad as it sounded , although still a fair bit considering...

You bet. I'm not sad at all. Terence and Sarah took a (poorly) calculated risk and deserved elimination when that risk failed to pay off. I am also no fan of Dan and Andrew bumbling their way through to be competing in leg 9, but at least they were only inept and not mindless and they tried hard.

Do you think they gave back the passport just b4 the race started ? to make minimum time to "study" ?
I thought US peoples can have 'visa on arrival' on most countries  :duno:

Peach:
Yes you are correct on the pre-race visa activity. They get many more visas than are actually used to prevent teams from knowing where they are going.

snap-on:
Teams are responsible for their wown passports for the entire reach. They take the passports of the sound-man and camerman to the ticket office when obtaining all airline flights. Although the episodes talk about "2 tickets to..." what is really happening is that the racers request 4 seats and hand over all 4 passports. They obviously get them back immediately.

On the question of on-arrival visas, you are correct for many countries, but that takes valuable time at the port of entry. What the Amazing Race does is obtain all the necessary visas in advance of the race to minimize delays getting through the airport.
