Title: Season 13 ratings
Post by: mswood on September 29, 2008, 11:20:33 AM
Well preliminary ratins are out for last nights season premiere of AR.

Tar scored 10.29 million viewers.  And a 3.2 in the adult 18-49 demo.

Well this is both good and bad news.

Lets get the bad news out of the way.
1st Becuase of a sports overrun the viewer numbers will probably fall slightly.
2nd We are down 3.53 million from the premiere last year (which benifted by an excellent overrun).
3rd Both 60 minutes (12.14 million) and Cold Case (11.24 million scored more viewers)

Okay on with the good news.
Our demo was the highest for CBS 60 min (2.2), Cold Case (2.7), Unit (2.6).
We are up from the year ago performance of Viva Laughlin by about 4 million viewers.
We scored better then Extreme Makeover:  Home Edition in viewers and demo (and thats unusual.

So overall we did pretty good, not great, but pretty good.

Fox had the NFL overrun which hurt, plus NBC is having tremendous ratings with Sunday Night Football thus far.

Next week, CBS has the overrun so that should help.

the cowboys plus a bad jacksonville team playing on sunday night will help tar increase viewers

In any case, TAR did better than that monstrosity of a reality show, Bumbling Bums :yess:

God we suck.

Fast Nationals are in (again because of the over run this might change a bit with final numbers) but here you go.  We were watched by only 10.78 million viewers.

That plain sucks for a sports overrun (and in fact since we moved to Sunday) thats the smallest audience the show has ever had with a sports overrun.

Even our 18-49 demo wasn't very good.  With just a 3.2 (though that was enough to beat Cold Case and the Unit).

Very disappointing.

:(

i hope CBS doesn't cancel TAR14....or has it already been given the 100% greenlight, no matter how the TAR13 ratings are?

Its not that bad Michael.  Almost all shows are down from the year ago numbers (and thats typical).  Its just disappointing that this is the rist time since season 9 that TAR hasn't increased over the previous year's cycle.

Well, a lot of it has to do with the NFL ratings which are up this season. Once again, Sunday Night Football killed everyone this week. That's including Desperate Housewives which until this season had been "NFL-proof".

Weren't we supposed to be able to see complete episodes at CBS this time? If so, I haven't found them yet... I thought maybe that would play a role but maybe not...

I was thinking that TiVo and Later viewing is probably really big for TAR...I always like to be able to pause and take a second look here more than any other show I watch.  Is Tivo use tracked at all and factored in any of the rating charts?

This guy (http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.amazing-race/browse_thread/thread/6ae194e72aa615d3#) has been keeping charts for awhile

Last night TAR ratings held steady, actually it was even slightly
higher than the season premiere thanks to football overrun. It
even helped CBS to win 8PM time slot. It is a great news because
most shows lose 20% of viewers when the second episode airs. It is
an exciting episode thanks to the multiple trainwrecks spreading
over the whole hour. People love watching trainwreck, especially
reality show viewers. They should come back next week. Just don't
submit this episode for the next Emmy's.

DVR use is tracked and can be added to the overall ratings, but I'm not exactly sure how it's done.

DVR results are usually release on the Monday 2 weeks after the episode airs.  FOr example they released the data for the week of 15-21.

Well I am surprised they didn't include the Vice Presidential Debate in this weeks ratings.  Because that alone would have been enough to knock us out of the top 20, since it did over 11 million viewers on 3 different networks.

On the demo front wit a 3.4 in the adult 18-49 we beat all but 60 minutes (typical during a sports overrun when 60 minutes gets the lion share of bleed over audience in all age groups).

Unlike last week we gt a minor bump in ratings, but Cold Case and The Unit took a hit in ratings and demo.  Which sorry for them, but good for us.  As we beat Cold Case and the Unit in all three demo groups 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 (which we did last week as well and beat 60 minutes in all three of those demos), but we also outperformed).

While it is nice to see us go up with finals (even if just marginally).  LAst year when 60 minutes would pull that high of a ratings number we were performing stronger.

With the ABC lineup also doing weaker across the board, I need to check last years Football to see if they are performing at similar levels (or lower or higher).

But to gloat (at CBS expense) the 8pm hour say dramatic year to year growth over same week last year.  When Viva premiered........

I'm shocked that ratings are down, because I think it's SUCH a good season!  Already so much drama!!!  Stupid stupid football and 60minutes gets in our way and then people lose interest :(

Special event news programming like the Presidential Debates aren't included in the ratings because they don't contain commercials. Debates are usually put into another category and aren't counted in the primetime ratings.

ETA - I omitted don't and I put that in bold. Sorry for the confusion.

2nd ep. "Amazing Race 13" ratings improve in final analysis

While the early rough estimates indicated the disturbing lack of a football ratings boost for the 2nd episode of "The Amazing Race 13," final same-day ratings indicated that TAR13 received at least a minor boost from the football overrun after all.

The October 5, 2008 airing of TAR13 received a final 3.4 Nielsen rating among same day viewers in the age 18-49 demo, up from the initially reported 3.2 estimate and also up from last week's confirmed 3.2 premiere mark. "The Amazing Race 13" 2nd airing was viewed by 11.0 million people, up from the originally estimated 10.4 million viewers and also up from last week's confirmed 10.0 million count.

"The Amazing Race 13" finished in 18th place among prime-time programs in overall viewership this past week and 16th place among age 25-54 viewers, admittedly helped by a "60 Minutes" lead-in that took 3rd and 10th places by those respective measures. TAR13 did not make the primetime top 25 in the 18-49 demographic.

CBS won the network battles for the week among overall, age 18-49 and age 25-54 viewership with "The Amazing Race" scoring near or above the network average in all those measures. While run #13 still isn't hitting early run #12 ratings levels, the program's long-term place on the CBS lineup seems more secure than it did just a few days ago.

   EDT          Series                 Viewers(millions)     Rating(18-49)
7:30 p.m.   60 Minutes               16.6                         4.0

TAR is pulling in the demos CBS wants 18-49. That's what every network wants.

Boy the ratings were so not that good, last night.  Though there were some markets delayed by overruns, I don't foresee a large impact.

Amazing Race in Fast Nationals (again these do change some in finals) had 9.17 million viewers a 2.8 in adults 18-49 and a 2.0 in adults 18-34.

On CBS we barely beat the Unit in total viewers 9.12 to 9.17 million viewers (thats the closest we have been to last in viewers this season).  We easily beat the others in the  adult 18-34 demo (not a huge factor for CBS they are much more concerned with the 18-49 and 25-54 demos, but hey I'll take anything I can get).  We barely beat Cold Case and the Unit in the 18-49 demo. We had a 2.8, Cold Case 2.7, the Unit 2.6, thats the closest we have been this season.

For the fall cycles the viewer total of 9.17 is 2nd lowest we have ever had on a Sunday.  The lowest was during Christmas week last season (were far, far fewer people are watching tv in general, so 9 million then was a great rating, here its terrible).

Going back to the typical fall broadcast schedule (which las year wasn't due to its late start), we have to go back to the Family Edition who had one episode lower then 10 million, with 8.8 million.

Thats just awful.

Now the spring cycles for All Stars and season 9 both had ratings lower (but TAR like most of the broadcast schedule does get lower ratings during the spring).

Cold Case had 10.89 million viewers
Extreme Home Makeover 11.26 (and won its time slot in total viewers, beating out football on NBC.

And the first week's DVR information is out.  Two important things here.  Teh DVR information that is released weekly includes 2 charts.  The first is the top 20 based on largest increase of total viewers.  The 2nd is based on the top 20 based on percentage increase.  That 2nd chart usually helps things with a smaller audience (like the whole CW lineup, which is DVR at a much higher percentage rate).  SO if we have weeks with no data. It means that it didn't make either of those top twenty charts.

Lucky this week, we snuck by.

The season premiere DVR results.

Amazing Race
Live Viewers (people who watched during the live broadcast) 9.089 million viewers.

Live Same Day (what I report as final numbers each week, refers to anyone who watched the show the day it aired up to 3am that night) 10.036 million

So 947 thousand people watched the first episode that night but after it aired.
Live plus 7 (those that watched with DVRs after the live broadcast to 7 days later) 10.587 million viewers.

So after that first night 551 thousand people watched it Monday through Saturday.

It also means that a total of 1.498 million people watch AR on their DVR's.

We ranked an increase of 16.5%, and were the 2Oth show on the list for largest audience gain (so we barely made the chart).

Out of CBS shows only 6 had better increases in total viewers.  NCIS, CSI Miami, Two and a Half Men, Criminal Minds, Survivor, and the Mentalist.

We had the largest increase in audience for any show in the 8pm Sunday time slot.

Only two other shows on Sunday made either list (though both did better) ABC desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters.

While its good news, its not as good as last year.  With an estimated 9% increase year to year of DVR usage, we scored better last season in all but one episode in increase of viewers.  But in comparison to the rest of CBS lineup we did rather well.

Title: Re: Season 13 ratings
Post by: mswood on October 14, 2008, 05:05:00 PM
As Puddin beat me to it.

Here's the results for CBS Sunday
7:00PM 60 MINUTES  10.75 million viewers, 1.9/6 18-48 demo, 2.7/7 25-54 demo
8:00PM AMAZING RACE 13  9.01 million viewers, 2.9/7 18-49 demo, 3.6/8 25-54 demo
9:00PM COLD CASE  10.99 million viewers, 2.7/6 18-49 demo, 3.7/8 25-54 demo
10:00PM THE UNIT  9.1 million viewers, 2.6/7 18-49 demo, 3.2/8 25-54 demo

So we actually did worse in viewers but improved slightly in the 18-49 demo, which is very important and actually more important then the viewer total.  We also did well  (though Cold Case for the first time this season) beat us in the 25-54 demo which is the bread and butter demo of CBS.

While the ratings (including the demos) are disappointing, ratings for the night across the board were down, so I guess misery loves company...

And exactly how old is the audience for 60 minutes.  Until last month I never tracked the 25-54 year demo (it pays per minute less, but it is CBS main demo).  But good 60 minutes doesn't even hit that demo at all.

Is there a demo called 6 feet under....or one foot in the grave, because that appears to be the only people who watch it.

It is still the 30th ranked show overall...And in a world with a bajillion show each week in the rankings, 30 is nothing to sneeze at...

Plus, as the Race progresses and the "non-interesting" (I say that with a grain of salt and a discarded X-Men comic) racers are philiminated ,the numbers should increase. People always turn out when the Race is at its pinnacle.

Well I never posted the Fast Nationals as the football overrun was going to have a large change in teh results and they did.

Amazing Race 10.29 million viewers (the smallest audience ever Spring or Fall on Sunday with a major sports overrun) 3.1 in adults 18-49, and a 3.9 in adults 25-54.

60 minutes which truly benifits from the football overrun killed us on all fronts.  But we still manged to outperform Cold Case and the Unit in both Demo groups and the uNit in total viewers.

But this for the first time since moving to Sunday's we are seeing year to year declines in the same time period.

Sunday's Fast Nationals

60 minutes 12.52 million viewers and a 2.2 in adults 18-49
AR 9.71 million and a 2.9 in adults 18-49
Cold Case 11.99 2.7 in adults 18-49
Unit 9.10 and a 2.5 in adults 18-49

So again depresssing viewer totals but still managing to outscore the others in the important 18-49 demo.

In addition, filmmaker Curtis Hanson (“L.A. Confidential”) and “Jericho” executive producer Carol Barbee are looking to put a new spin on the medical drama format for CBS. And while the odds are good that there will be more of “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race” next year, the status of Mark Burnett’s “Jingles” is still uncertain.

—When asked if “Survivor” would return for more cycles beyond the one currently in production, CBS Corp. President-CEO Leslie Moonves indicated it would. “I think it’s a pretty safe bet,” he said. “I’m also very pleased with the numbers for ‘The Amazing Race.’”   :jam:  :yess:

The only thing I really worry about (besides just being neurotic about ratings) is that typically the show performs worse in the spring, so I wouldn't be surprised to see the show get 8 million to 10 million during season 14.

And that will be the time we get an official renewal notice (at least usually).

Don't forget the World Series was on Sunday and that was a big factor. Fox won the night with the NFL overrun and the Series so I think you can chuck this week out.

Actually Ken total audience level even with both sporting events (Both of which set record lows) shouldn't have been a large factor.

Well their is some updated DVR news.  We get the top twenty for live plus 7, but unfortunately the advertisers pay absolutely nothing for live plus 7, they are primarily interested in live plus same day and some also pay for live plus 3 day.

Well they have finally released some live plus three data and it is terrible (and not just for TAR but for every single show).  The report not only those that watch the shows up to 3 days later but who watch the commercials and that is vitally important because if commercials aren't watch advertiser wont pay for extra based on those viewers.

Well for those that watch from the 2nd to 3rd day there was less then 1% that actually watched commercials.  Meaning those live plus 3 ratings are worthless.  And be extension the studios well never (based on that data) convince teh ad men to pay for live plus seven ratings.  So no matter how many more viewers any show you enjoy gets from the next day on from DVR's is absolutely worthless in determining if a studio will keep that show.  In fact I wouldn't be surprised now to see ad men wanting to kill the live plus same day (so that DVR use up to 3 am counts for ratings and ad revenue) and go back to strictly live ratings.

And with that out of the way, here is the DVR ratings for episode # 2.

On shows with the largest gain in total audience AR scored 13th (up from 20th the week before).

Persons live (when it aired) 9.912
Persons live plus same day (normal rating) 10.999 million
Persons live plus 7 days:  11.548 million

So 1.087 million people watched TAR Sunday night after it aired but before 3am on DVR's.

ANd from 3am Monday morning to next Sunday another .549 million people (who ad men don't care a rats ass about watched).  So at least the good news is the bulk of the DVR use is in the first 5 hours after the show airs And does count for ad revenue.

CBS shows that did better that week were NCIS, Survivor, Criminal minds, @ and a half men, CSI MIami and the mentalist.

DVR results week #3
Ranked 16th out of 20 for total audience increase and ranked 19th for greatest percentage increase at 21% from live to live plus 7.

Live ratings:  7.962 (and that, that is very scary)
Live plus same day (normal rating) 9.012
Live plus 7 days 9.632

So from 9pm to 3am we gained 1.05 million viewers
From 3am Monday Morning to the next Sunday we gained another 620 thousand viewers who don't matter in any way shape or form.

Oh and to put that live rating number into perspective, tv has been doing live plus same day for quite a while but it used to be very marginal (except for a few select shows) since VCR did record, but viewer people actually used that as their primary way of watching shows.

So that 7.962 is the worst rating TAR has received since Since the third day and time slot change hit season 9.  Its a terrible, terrible number.

I don't understand any of that. Why would gaining another 1 million viewers within 6 hours of the show airing not be wonderful news? And why wouldn't having the World Series up against us be factored in?
Title: Re: Season 13 ratings
Post by: mswood on October 28, 2008, 11:16:40 PM
Oh the World Series was a factor, not just as large of one as many other things that TAR as faced.  Both the world Series (so far) and the Sunday night Football game performed poorly (compared to what they normally might do).

Total audience (including the World Series) for the 8pm hour was down compared to the same week the year before.

But we should have lost some viewers., but the fact that without sports preemptions we have been between 9 million and 10.5 isn't great.  Its not bad either (as again so many shows are down this year, and most shows do decline year to year).  Its just we haven't since moving to Sundays.  We have actually built each year over the same time period of the year before.  This season we won't.

As for the DVR data, yes the first 5 hours of DVR use does count for ad revenue (And thats good), its also good that most of our DVR audience is in that first 5 hours (some shows aren't).

I was just really depressed by that live number for week # 3, and that was just a fairly typical sports weekend (Football hasn't performed as well this year).

Compared to season 12 and its toughest night of competition (The Championship game which had 53 million viewers by itself) we still had just in live audience a rating of 8.382.  With much much stronger competition.

So thats a reason why I think the number was a disappointment.  ANd I am very curious how last nights episode will fair when we get the breakdown of live and DVR use.  It could very easily be closer to 7.5 million or lower (though I hope that doesn't happen and that low number is the worst it falls this year).

I wonder if having the full episodes on CBS will play a role? As happy as I am to see them, there has always been a sense of urgency to either watch or DVR the show...and perhaps that sense of urgency is gone?

But some ad man should be happy...I watched all 20ish? clips each 1-3 minutes, and I saw the same exact 30 sec Sprint ad all however many times. That's a pretty high return--30 sec for less than 3 minutes?

I'll respectfully differ with you on that, mswood. You know I love you but besides that, I do think the sports ratings skewered this week's TAR ratings. With no football against TAR, the male audience and 18-49 went to Fox for the WS. I do think the World Series (lower ratings considered with the two teams this year) did play a factor for the lower finish this week.

I do think you'll see TAR's ratings go up on Sunday with regular programming back in place.

Yes, that actually does help.  NO matter what the studios said to the writers before the strike happened.  The studio gets small small amount of money from each ad watched.  ANd while it is small, its is a growing market where income is only going to increase.

With viewership down (on tv in general) and people skipping commercials on DVR's (God knows I do).  I would expect more of these things to occur.  1.  More ticker ads along the bottom of the screen.  Kind of how the CBS logo is there, I expect to see a few more shows having a brie tag about a corporate sponser. And more product placement, in other words the gnome, the gnome is here to stay.

And even though I am all negative nancy on the ratings, since ad revenue is a huge point for the network no other group brings in more then the 18-49 age group and even with lower viewer numbers we still do better then any other sunday show on CBS and do better then a good chunk of CBS total lineup.  So thats a huge plus.

Another take on the ratings:

Ratings Stabilize:

Quote
What seems to have happened is that any early decline in the TAR13 numbers has largely ended. "The Amazing Race 13" has stabilized in the ratings as a moderately successful show on a largely successful network lineup. CBS as a whole also won the week among overall viewers, tying for second place in the 18-49 age group.

Ok, I have the overnights from last night. TAR finished 4th in its timeslot after Sunday Night Football, Extreme Makeover, and The Simpsons. We'll see the final numbers later.

Quote
TV Ratings: NFL, 'Simpsons' Lead the Way Sunday
'Treehouse of Horror' gets the night's best 18-49 ratings

Fast National ratings for Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008

The NFL brought ratings dividends to both NBC and FOX Sunday, while the annual "Simpsons" Halloween show was a big demographic draw.

NBC led the night's overall race with a 7.8 rating/12 share. ABC and CBS tied for second in households at 7.1/11, with ABC slightly ahead in total viewers (11.27 million to 11.19 million for CBS). FOX finished a competitive fourth at 6.4/10. The CW's lame-duck lineup hardly made an impressing, finishing at 0.5/1.

"The Simpsons" helped FOX lead the adults 18-49 demographic with a 4.9 rating. NBC took second at 4.5, followed by ABC at 3.9. CBS averaged 2.6, and The CW limped in at 0.2.

CBS' "60 Minutes" put CBS on top at 7 p.m. with a 9.1/14. Late-afternoon NFL games and "The OT" averaged 7.9/13 for FOX (and led the 18-49 demo by a wide margin). NASCAR racing, 5.2/8, and an abbreviated "America's Funniest Home Videos," 4.0/6, put ABC in third, just ahead of "Football Night in America" on NBC. The CW went with "In Harm's Way."

NBC grabbed the overall lead at 8 p.m. with "Sunday Night Football," 8.4/13. "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" drew a 6.9/10 for ABC. "The Simpsons," 7.0/10, and "King of the Hill," 5.0/7, came in third for FOX. "The Amazing Race" scored a 6.0/9 for CBS. "Valentine" couldn't find any love on The CW.

"Desperate Housewives," 10.1/15, snagged the night's biggest audience for ABC at 9 p.m. NBC's NFL game, featuring the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots, earned a 9.1/14. "Cold Case," 7.5/11, was third for CBS. FOX fell back to fourth with "Family Guy," 5.8/9, and "American Dad," 4.4/7. "Easy Money" closed the night for The CW.

"Sunday Night Football," 9.0/15, regained the lead for NBC at 10 p.m. "Brothers & Sisters" posted a 6.6/11 for ABC, while CBS got a 5.7/10 from "The Unit."

Thanks Ken I was so busy this morning.

Fast National breakdown for CBS

60 minutes
14.37 million viewers
2.7 in adults 18-49
1.7 in adults 18-34

Amazing Race
9.76 million viewers
2.8 in adults 18-49
1.8 in adults 18-34

Cold Case
11.64 million viewers
2.6 in adults 18-49
1.5 in adults 18-34

Unit
8.97 million viewers
2.3 in adults 18-49
1.5 in adults 18-34

Ken reported the Household numbers with 6.0 (meaning 6% of all households were watching) and a 9 share meaning 9% of all households that were actually watching tv during that hour.

Thats are lowest score for household of the season (though we have had lower viewer totals, more tv on, but fewer people watching at each house).

Nice to see an uptick in viewers.  But the demo performance wasn't good.  With just beating out 60 minutes in both demo groups is shocking for a night without a sports overrun.  Also shocking is how low that demo is falling.

We really, really need to see the show pull higher in both viewers and demo to make sure we get two cycles next year.  CBS so far is doing better then most networks as far as viewer decline goes, but I would be much happier with at least a 10 million viewer average and a 3.0 average in adults 18-49.

DVR for week #4.

This is easy, we wont have any.  Amazing Race didn't score a large enough viewer increase in either total viewers or percentage increase to make either top twenty list.

Meaning we had less then a gain of 1.466 million viewers from our live airing to the live plus 7 so we will only have the normal data live same day (which does include those who watch up to 3am monday morning).

We also didn't have an increase of at least 18.2%.

The CBS shows that did make the list were CSI, NCIS< Survivor, Two and a half Men, The mentalist, CSI-Miami, and Numbers (WTF get the hell out of our spot).

Thanks to the NFL runover, CBS won the night and Amazing Race was helped out as well. When the live sports runovers are factored in, this will change, but the overnights show the following:

Quote
TV Ratings: Peyton, Eli Manning Score Sunday
CBS and NBC both get a boost from NFL games

Fast National ratings for Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008

NFL games involving the Manning brothers were ratings winners Sunday, with Peyton helping CBS grab the overall title and little brother Eli fueling NBC's demographic victory.

CBS averaged a 9.2 rating/14 share for the night, beating out NBC's 8.3/13 (both networks' final numbers will change when the live sports telecasts are factored in). ABC, 6.9/11, came in third. FOX took fourth with a 4.0/6, while a night of repeats on The CW drew a miniscule 0.4/1.

NBC led among adults 18-49 with a 4.9 rating. ABC and CBS tied for second in the key demographic with a 3.8. FOX was not far back at 3.2. The CW came in at 0.2.

The end of Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts' win over the Pittsburgh Steelers combined with "60 Minutes" for a 13.2/21 at 7 p.m. NBC's "Football Night in America," 4.6/7, was second in households, but "America's Funniest Home Videos," 4.3/7, brought a few more total viewers to ABC. Repeats of "King of the Hill" and "The Simpsons" put FOX in fourth, well ahead of "In Harm's Way" on The CW.

NBC's "Sunday Night Football," featuring Eli Manning's New York Giants and the Philadelphia Eagles, scored a 9.2/14 at 8 p.m. CBS averaged 8.8/13 with the conclusion of "60 Minutes" and "The Amazing Race." ABC got a 6.4/10 from "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." "The Simpsons," 4.7/7, and "King of the Hill," 4.0/6, kept FOX in fourth. The CW went with "Valentine."

At 9 p.m., the Giants-Eagles game and ABC's "Desperate Housewives" tied for the lead at 10.0/15 (and were separated by fewer than 50,000 total viewers). "The Amazing Race" and "Cold Case" scored a 7.5/11 for CBS, beating out "Family Guy," 5.2/8, and "American Dad," 4.1/6, on FOX.

NBC reclaimed sole possession of first at 10 p.m. as the game posted a 9.5/16. "Cold Case" and "The Unit" drew a 7.2/12 for CBS, edging the 6.9/11 for "Brothers & Sisters" on ABC.

Best ratings of the season!!  :yess:
woohoo!!! awesome - and fittingly so for the best episode of the season so far! hmm.. maybe these ratings do actually mean something other than ad revenue...

Let's hope all those people got hooked in and will be staying for the remainder of the season!!!

Next week, CBS has the doubleheader as well, but NBC has Dallas at Washington which always gets good ratings so we'll see if this is the start of a trend or if this is a one time spike.

Yeah, thinks to no internet yesterday at work I couldn't psot any of the good news.

Based on 30 minute breakdowns of the night (which will still change clightly since the delay wasn't an even 30 minutes and will reflect an influence of Cold Case).  So the breakdown of the 8:30 to 9:30 ratings is what I am reporting, today we will have the accurate info.

Viewers from 8:30 to 9:30 11.68 million
Demo for 18-49 from 8:30 to 9:30  3.3
Demo 18-34 from 8:30 to 9:30 2.4

We might see a minor drop in the viewer total (but shouldn't in the demo as AR has consistently beat Cold Case in all three primary Demo groups (teh 25-54 isn't reported in Fast Nationals just Finals).

But it will probably be our most watched episode (and the episode was so worth it, I loved it).  And if it stays close to that number in viewers that matches the typical overrun result of last year and is a little better then the overrun results from season 10.

I was very pleased by these results.

And DVR results for episode # 5 are out and they showed a bit of an increase from week 3 (and I would assume week 4 that didn't have a large enough increase to make the chart).

Live viewers were 8.558 million
Live Same Day (up to 3am and what are considered final numbers)  9.696 million
Live plus 7 (anyone who watched that week) 10.3 million

a increase of 1.742 million from DVR (VHR's) from its initial broadcast.

A percentage increase of 20.4% (its 2nd best this year).

The only other CBS shows that did better were CSI, NCIS, Survivor, 2 and a half men, The Mentalist.

There was also a report released last week about the first month of this season and how DVR viewership is changing how networks look at shows and which do appeal and what age group uses DVR to watch.

Amazing Race is the 3rd out of all reality shows in DVR usage percentage wise, 2nd in viewers.

The report talks about how its DVR usage and the lower average age of those who DVR helps CBS who's audience is aging and thus gets less dollar per viewer based on that older audience (yeah they hate us).

They also talk about how while its true that DVR results don't truly play a part in revenue thanks to all of us not watching the ads.  It does talk about how certain shows can benefit from  already existing product placement.  For AR tehy talk about how the airline coverage the show provides and the gnome has great means of bringin gin additional revenue from advertisiers (or donating, for our show say airfare, to help lower the cost of shows).

Its a rather positive report for how the future business model for TV wil lhave to take shape, and our show was one that seemed to benefit from it.

60 Minutes, CSI and Sunday Night Football lead weekly top 20 Nielsen TV Ratings
Posted on 11 November 2008 by Robert Seidman

A huge NFL lead in propelled 60 Minutes to the top of the weekly overall broadcast network viewing charts, followed by CSI and Sunday Night Football. Election coverage and the Saturday Night Live Presidential Bash 2008 alsomade the list. On this list CBS was dominant with eleven shows, followed by ABC with five and NBC with four. Fox was completely shut out of this list, though it fared much better in the weekly 18-49 year old top twenty rankings where it at least placed Family Guy and The Simpsons.

CBS isn’t so dominate among 18-49 year olds where it placed seven shows (NBC place six, ABC five and Fox two) but it was still dominant and, it pulled something off I never thought I’d see: two out of three shows from Friday making the top 20 - Numb3rs and a repeat (yes a repeat!) of NCIS. Ghost Whisperer was not far behind at number 23. Just so you know I still have my head screwed on more or less correctly, yes I know it was a strange week with election coverage preempting all of the Tuesday shows. While I don’t personally find this particular list as meaningful as the 18-49 list (and neither, by the way, do the networks) CBS is still cleaning up here and among 18-49 year olds as well. Actually making a night out of Fridays is to be commended in my book.

Still, with almost four million more viewers, Grey’s Anatomy had a million more 18-49 year old viewers than CSI. But there’s no shame in that. The shame for now lies a little at Fox and a LOT at NBC. Without sports, and election coverage NBC would’ve placed no shows on this list (and without Sunday Football that would be the case every week!). Fox at least would’ve place House if not for the election coverage. But the fun doesn’t start for Fox until American Idol comes back, which is going to be a while. Though it will be very interesting to see how the two hour movie, 24: Redemption does in a couple of weeks.

At 8 p.m. CBS stayed in first with "60 Minutes" and the first part of "The Amazing Race" averaging a 10.8/16. NBC was second with an 8.7/13 for the pregame and kick-off for the Cowboys and Redskins. ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" had a 6.3/9 for third, while FOX's "The Simpsons" and "King of the Hill" averaged a 4.4/6. The CW's "Valentine, Inc" somehow managed to lose viewers from its lead-in.

NBC won the 9 p.m. hour with a 10.4/15 for the Washington/Dallas game. ABC's "Desperate Housewives" was a close second with a 10.2/15. CBS' "Amazing Race" and "Cold Case" had a 7.4/11 for third. FOX averaged another 4.4/6 for "Family Guy" and "American Dad." And, somehow again, The CW's "Easy Money" lost viewers from its lead-in.

60 MINUTES," FEATURING THE FIRST INTERVIEW WITH PRESIDENT-ELECT BARACK OBAMA," DELIVERS IT LARGEST AUDIENCE SINCE AT LEAST 1999
CBS Wins Sunday in Viewers

60 MINUTES, featuring the first interview with President-elect Barack Obama, delivered its largest audience since at least January 1999, leading CBS to a Sunday night win in viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen ratings for Nov. 16.

Notes:  Due to an "NFL on CBS" overrun of approximately 30 minutes, prime time ratings are tentative and subject to change.

From 7:30-8:30 PM, 60 MINUTES was first in households (14.7/23), viewers (24.49m), adults 25-54 (8.2/19) and adults 18-49 (6.4/16).  While the viewer total is tentative, the last time 60 MINUTES delivered more than 24 million viewers was January 17, 1999 (25.77m).

At 8:30 PM, THE AMAZING RACE (7.4/11, 12.25m) averaged a 4.4/09 in adults 25-54 and 3.4/08 in adults 18-49.

At 9:30 PM, COLD CASE (7.8/12, 12.05m) averaged a 3.9/08 in adults 25-54 and 2.9/07 in adults 18-49.

From 10:30-11:30 PM, THE UNIT (6.3/12, 9.66m) averaged a 3.2/09 in adults 25-54 and 2.5/07 in adults 18-49.

For the night, CBS was first in households (10.2/16), viewers (16.59m), second in adults 25-54 (5.6/12) and adults 18-49 (4.4/11).

While its a season high in fast nationals, media analist consider it a disappointing number due to the huge direct lead in of 60 minutes.  THey were hoping for an even larger performance for AR.

I don't care I am still happy with it.  ANd it might go hope some in finals.

By the way that isn't this week's ratings that was last week's if anyone was confused.

THis week the finals are out and TAR got 12.127 million viewers with a 3.5 in adults 18-49  Both are season highs.

60 minutes did a huge 25.104 million viewers and a 6.3 in adults 18-49  This will easily be the hghest rated show again (2 weeks in a row).

COld Case manage to sneak past us in viewers with 12.277 million and a demo of 2.8 (notice the huge demo difference between us and cold case with nearly identical viewer totals).  THats a huge revenue difference for the shows (with TAR doing far, far better).  And the Unit closed out the night with 10.230 million viewers and a 2.7 in adults 18-49.

Hey, maybe not so bad ratings!
Jack Bauer vs. Kanye West and Peyton Manning
By Roger Catlin on November 24, 2008 2:54 PM | Permalink | Comments (0)
Overnight ratings for "24: Redemption," the two-hour standalone movie that aired Sunday on Fox, indicate that 12.04 million viewers watched Jack Bauer's latest adventure.

It drew its audience on a competitive night, where the "American Music Awards" on ABC (where Kanye West won a couple of awards) averaged 12.2 million viewers.

"Sunday Night Football" on NBC did equally as well, with about 12.29 million viewers. And CBS was right in there, too, with "The Amazing Race" at 10.13 million viewers, "Cold Case" at 12.07 million and "The Unit" with 9.99 million.

The football bounce kept CBS on top at 8 p.m. as "60 Minutes" and "The Amazing Race" combined for a 9.4/14. NBC moved up to second (and led among adults 18-49) with "Sunday Night Football," 7.5/11. " Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," 6.7/11, snagged third for ABC. " The Simpsons," 4.4/7, and "King of the Hill," 3.6/5, were fourth for FOX. The CW aired the movie "Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course."

TV Ratings: '60 Minutes' makes a splash for CBS
Dec 1, 2008, 04:15 PM | by Annie Barrett

Categories: TV Biz, TV Ratings

On last night's 60 Minutes, the promise of a shirtless Anderson Cooper racing against Olympic stud Michael Phelps was enough to pull in a solid 15.6 million viewers -- over a million more than the show's last new airing -- helping CBS win Sunday in total viewership. (Some credit also goes to NFL spillover in the 7 p.m.-8 p.m. hour.) The network's other amazing race, namely The Amazing Race, attracted 11.6 million viewers, a 15 percent gain over last week's episode.

Thus, The Amazing Race held its own against NBC's Sunday Night Football (which averaged 13.6 million viewers) and ABC's 9 p.m.-10 p.m. winner, Desperate Housewives (15.6 million). And ABC's Brothers & Sisters (10.2 million viewers) triumphed opposite CBS' underperforming Cold Case (10.7 million), which normally brings in over 12 million viewers. Over at Fox, all three new half-hour cartoons (The Simpsons, King of the Hill, American Dad!) suffered dips in viewership, while a rerun of Family Guy managed to pull in 80 percent of the audience from its last new airing.

Over here in Australia The Amazing Race has hit the top 20 for the first time ever, coming in at number 20 for Did You Push My Sports Bra Off The Ledge?

No other American reality show has ever gone top 20 in Australia.

In fact, the only reality shows aside from TAR to get top 20 status is BB Oz (Which has been canned), Aus Idol (Which is on the slide) and Dancing with the stars Oz (Which is still going very strong.)

Thats awesome news Coutzy!

This guy (http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.amazing-race/browse_thread/thread/262975179fa7a07d#) has been keeping rating scores since TAR6

With the help of Football overrun, TAR got another good ratings
last night. Just my obsrevation: when this happened, Extreme
Makeover ratings got hurt the most. It seems that more viewers
will choose EM between TAR and EM, but they like 60 Minutes when
it is 60 Minutes vs. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. Also, on the
rare face-off in 9 to 9:30 half hour time slot, TAR had 7.3/11
ratings while Desperate Housewives had 9.8/15. What do guys think
if CBS moved TAR to 9 to 10 time slot?

Final numbers are out for last week's episode.

We got 11.83 million viewers (on CBS on 60 minutes beat us) we got a 3.5 in adults 18-49 (only 60 minutes beat us).

For the season to date we have averaged 10.529 million viewers.

The average rating for the previous 12 seasons is 10.241.  So we are marginally ahead of the average.

This is the viewer average for each season with it going most viewers to fewest viewers.

The ratings are going up as the season progresses which is par for the course and with a weak matchup for NBC's Sunday Night Football, the ratings for the finale should be decent.

The Sunday Night game this weekend isn't that weak, with Washington and Baltimore. I suspect it will get pretty good ratings on the east coast.

I have to differ with you there, redwings. The BW area will be a ratings smash, but I don't think New York and Boston will watch with much interest.

TV Ratings: CBS, FOX Split Sunday
Viewer crown goes to CBS while FOX wins the demo derby

Fast National ratings for Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008

A made-for-TV movie helped CBS hold off FOX and take the overall ratings title Sunday night.

CBS averaged a 7.6 rating/12 share for the night, a little better than second-place FOX's 6.7/10. ABC was a close third at 6.6/10, and NBC came in fourth with a 6.1/9. The CW, as usual, was way off the pace at 1.0/1.

FOX led the adults 18-49 demographic with a 4.6 rating. ABC took second at 3.7, just ahead of NBC, 3.6. CBS averaged 2.8 and The CW 0.5.

Well final numbers came out on Tuesday for AR's season finale.

And we fell just a tiny bit.

10.504 million viewers
3.1 in adults 18-49 (highest for CBS)
4.00 in adults 25-54 (also highest for CBS, which kill sme that we beat 60 minues in this demo)

We ended the season with an average

10.526 million viewers
3.155 in adults 18-49
4.02 in adults 25-54

I will of course update with the DVR results (we still have several weeks of that) and some comparisons to previous seasons.

DVR usage currently is good for the network is gauging an audiences interest ina show.  But DVR currently don't give the network much of any actual revenue, since reports show that nearly 100% of viewers skip the commercials.

At least legal online viewing (through either things like itunes where you buy an episode or a season of a show, or through free ad based viewings on a networks site) do give the network revenue.  Currently it isn't a lot, but it still does generate revenue.

DVR results also help networks figure how much they are hurt by their current competition.

Eventually the networks will figure out a way to generate revenue from dvr use (even if its only through product placement) hello roving gnome.  And those results do make the show look good.

Perhaps CBS could make some money by putting past seasons on iTunes, but reality usually doesn't do well in reruns or reselling.

I wish they would I would be so there.  But they don't feel its worth it.  Which it cost so little to make episodes available on itunes, and while you don't make a huge profit (total dollars), you make a decent percetage profit.
