Episode Detail: Did You Push My Sports Bra Off the Ledge? - Amazing Race 13 The nine remaining teams travel from Fortaleza, Brazil, to La Paz, Bolivia, on the third leg of the race.

Updates on our life in (La Paz), Bolivia (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15356.msg301059.html#msg301059l) *ok, fun tidbits now! The day we took possession of our apartment we were crossing the park in front of our building and noticed a lot of people and some really weird all wood bicycles. *I noticed a lot of the people around them looked like the rich gortex-wearing tourist we see and/or the Discovery Channel crew that worked with us last year. *Then I noticed it: a yellow signed that said "U-Turn" with a yellow and red flag on it... It was The Amazing Race!!!!! (It's a fun reality show, google it if you don't know what it is) I was sooooooo excited! I was torn between staying there until contestants showed up or going into our apartment. Given Wes' lack of enthusiasm I decided to go back home. But hey, next Amazing Race they will be showing our building and our park!
sorry I didn't reply earlier, we didn't have any internet access for the last 10 days. *As for your questions, it's a bit hard to remember (as I'm not as obsessed by details as you guys are!) but we are rather certain we saw the Amazing Race on May 28th in La Paz. *They were in Plaza Abaroa (sometime called Plaza Avaroa), in the neighborhood of Sopocachi. From our apartment, we also noticed a lot of commotions and big tv lighting in the parc of the Monticulo, near Plaza Espana. *I am like 80% sure the sign said U-Turn but as soon as I shouted "Oh my god it's the Amazing Race" some of the workers covered the sign. I know it wasn't one of those thing where you can put the picture of another team. *So just a big yellow sign with the flag beneath it. What else... The bikes were similar to the ones on the picture you sent but less shabby looking. And they were next to wooden head gear with lots of feathers on it. I didn't see any teams. Oh, but also, there were lots of brass bands typical of Bolivia. I'm not sure why they were there.

Now, airports are not on my list of favourite places to be stuck at the best of times, and unfortunately Santa Cruz airport is fairly small - apart from when we saw Phil Keoghan (of Amazing Race fame) waiting for a plane too - now we are wondering if the Amazing Race was in town - that would be cool!

More from Jason (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,15372.msg300503.html#msg300503) *He was in the airport on April 30th. *He saw teams, each accompanied by a camera and sound guy start arriving in the early evening. *They all appeared exhausted and after ticketing at different counters, some went for a bite to eat and some just crashed. He emphasized that he didn't know what they had been doing, but all seemed tired and dirty. *He saw teams arriving in 2 "waves". *The first prob 5 to 6 teams (some difficulty sorting out camera people from teams) arriving earlier maybe 4-5PM and the second smaller group of 1 or 2-3 arriving an hour or so later.
Re teams: *He saw 2 girls he called "the sisters" (but could have been friends also) dressed in blue shirts *2 younger teams --couples he thinks *One older gray haired maybe 45 yrs man (unclear here whether racer or production) *He points out that almost all the Int flights leave Santiago in the eve. He thinks most of the teams were going by 7+ or so. His flight left about 8.

Woah, I was looking at this National Geographic for pictures, and they had an artical about the fighting Cholitas in La Paz. I thought it would be awsome if they were featured this season, and now they are!

I suspect the biking racer started at El Prado (http://www.tiwy.com/pais/bolivia/la-paz/prado/viewphoto.phtml?prado) (a fancy boulevard) and rides 3/4 to 1 mile (depends on where along the boulevard they start) and went down to the 'park across the street' from our Canadian ex-pat's condo. That destination is the Plaza Abaroa (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/3494621) where she saw production milling around wooden bikes. The elevation drop is 11830 to 11680 feet along the ride.

I can't find the quote now but I remember they are supposed to go down a steep cobblestoned street--we had a lot of posts about where that street might be, I think thru a market/shopping street w/ museums on it? I'll have to go look...

OK so I was laying in bed last night and was thinking, yeah thats my problem, anyway.......its also possible that perhaps the blonds are eliminated in EP3 and this is another team making light of it as they leave the pitstop in La Paz "I Wonder If They Like Blondes in New Zealand?".

Anybody have some good U turn box shots? I can double check this with them pretty quickly if you want...
The U-turn boxes I remember DO have the place for the picture and she doesn't think what she saw did, so U turn might be a little iffy. But we have a way to ask again if needed. :angel:

You rock Boingo! I'll do screencaps later of the sneak peek, it was like 3am and I just couldn't do them. Did anyone mention that Phil arrived in La Paz on Sunday 5/25 and the U-Turn set up was witnessed on the 28th, so Fortaleza was a obvious extended pitstop.

I would agree with that. Phil and Barry fighting the cholitas is great comedy. I am going to guess that no AR13 participant, not even Ken, can win against a cholita unless the cholita is throwing the match(which I expect all are expected to do to allow the individuals fighting to be able to finish and leave).

OK so I was laying in bed last night and was thinking, yeah thats my problem, anyway.......its also possible that perhaps the blonds are eliminated in EP3 and this is another team making light of it as they leave the pitstop in La Paz "I Wonder If They Like Blondes in New Zealand?".

We see so far Ken, Mark, Dallas, Dan, and Marisa doing the Roadblock. A female in yellow that I am not totally sure about? Is that Kelly or Christy? ???
How are you separating out early and late groups please when we see them all together? ???
Do you think the order they sit in has something to do with it or just coincidence?
The bench where the first group was sitting is empty now (the picture that I attached above), and since Dallas is on stage and Toni is cheering they are ahead of the later group.

Another point, why would Christy/Kelly Nick & Starr be racing to the U-Turn after the Roadblock if they were in the later group? .. just incase one of the earlier teams did not use it? Unless I'm making assumptions that is who the clue is referring to but the bra thing = argue over a piece of clothing so?

What do we think comes first? The bikes or the Roadblock wrestlers? I thought we were thinking Roadblock due to the proximity to the airport?
The U-turn should be near the place where they get the bikes right? That's where our source saw the bikes, the headdresses, the U-turn sign all together.
So maybe Roadblock, then bikes (might or might not be a Detour choice>>prob is)....
But why in the world would K/C be hanging around chatting with Nick? If they U-turned Nick/Starr, wouldn't they be long gone? I am trying to imagine a scenario that gives them time to discuss the issue in the same place if they are talking U-turn. If Nick is apologizing for U-turning them, then same logic--why would he be hanging around?
I'll take puddin's word on it being Kelly, but I agree that it is hard to see.
Re who wrestles first:
That shot of Marisa or Brooke facing the line of cholitas does seem to make it look as though they are there first...but that would be some flight upset if the last team to leave is the first to arrive at the RB so maybe we are putting too much on that one shot?
So I thought Ken/Tina the Geeks and the Blondes are there first (empty bench) and then the others arrive. Perhaps you enter the ring more than once? Throw your wrestler or get a time delay (like the dancing in Burkina Faso) and have to go to the back of the line and come try again?
What seems like it could be a different time are the ones we don't see in that bunch ringside:
Seen together in the same general time are Tina/Ken, Brooke/Marisa, Mark/Bill, and then we also see Brooke/Marisa, Mark/Bill, Nick/Starr, Toni/Dallas, Ty/Aja, and Terence/Sarah.
That makes me think Ken/Tina are gone before N/S, T/D, T/A, and T/S arrive...
But NOT seen with that ringside bunch are Andrew/Dan, Kelly/Christie so they could be earlier or later. The reason that is interesting is that in one of the Insider chats this week, Dan and Andrew talk about thinking about U-turning Kelly/ Christie.

I wrote above, I think C/K beat Nick & Starr to the cluebox and I think Nick is trying to talk C/K out of using the U-Turn on he and Starr but thats a guess, who knows? lol For all I know they are waiting for a bus or something.

I doubt if TAR would allow the racers to ride their wooden bikes on such a busy avenue... they would be at great risk in traffic. I suspect a smaller side street instead, if here at all.

They can't start the ride there because it is at a lower elevation. And the first promo clip of the racer on a wooden bike is pin pointed to be on his way to the park.

puddin, actually wayno is not a type of song. It is a musical group called Group Wayno. It performs primarily in Peru but given the proximity of Bolivia(particularly the eastern end of Lake Titicaca where LaPaz is near) I am guessing that they also get to Bolivia.

We know from a photo that one of them is really being impacted by the difficulty of breathing at high altitudes. That can almost shut you down wherever you are. It happened to me on an Alp 30-odd years ago and was pretty scary. It would be difficult to overcome that if the race was otherwise close.

I'm not ready to see Mark & Bill go. I don't think the oxygen mask plays a big factor in their progress through the leg.
Remember that the oxygen mask scene is on April 27th just after they land at El Alto. Whereas the shot of Mark by the government building is in the morning of the next day. From there, I suspect, they get the clue to go find Bolivar at El Prado.
Other teams could feel threatened by Mark & Bill and a leading team could decide to implement the U-Turn on them at Plaza Avaroa. (:;)
Oh no, that could be it for them. :'(

Well, Chateau that depends on when teams reached the pitstop in Fortaleza and how long the pitstop is. Teams landed in Fortaleza around 0945 April 25 and might have taken most of daylight hours to do their tasks. I don't know when they finished, but 4pm plus or minus is probably a reasonable guess. With a 12 hour pitstop, that would release them around 4am on April 26. The best set of flights to LaPaz is JJ3325 FOR GRU 0730 1130, combined with 5L301 GRU LPB 1600 2115. That gives teams maybe 210 minutes after pitstop release to be departing on JJ3325 and they need to get to the Fortaleza airport, go through security and to buy tickets. That doesn't sound like a lot of time to burn to me.

It sure looks that way to me. I am confused, however, by the sight of two professionals in the ring with the wrestler. One appears female and one male. It is possible that it is a 2 on 1 tag team with the AR13 wrestler getting the help of a cholita to fight a male wrestler(the ones shown in the photo).

2) In this shot, Tina is cheering Ken because he has satisfied the Roadblock by doing whatever to the Cholita. Terence & Sara are nowhere to be seen (because they have finished it and they are gone now). Marisa & Brooke are there in 'next' position. Mark & Bill are there in 'next' position after Marisa & Brooke. Nobody else is there yet.
3) In this shot we see that more teams have arrived. Next in the line up are Toni & Dallas, Nick & Starr, Aja & Ty, and Andrew & Dan. We know this group of teams has arrived after the other teams on the bench because of the outside shot of Nick & Starr exactly where Terence & Sara where but now there are vendor tents in the background. Arrival times: Yes, it's really tight. Take a look at the shadow on the sidewall of the pool directly behind the racers when they are on the mat. There is not much water in the pool so we see the sidewall . And it is a curved wall as in the side of the pool is curved as you walk around it. That means that the shadow line will slide along the wall as the sun moves westward. That shadow line barely moved at all for the first 5 teams. For the next 3 teams it has moved a few inches. Finally, for the eliminated team it has moved by a few feet (we don't ever get to hear their check in time but I guess they were apart form the other teams by a wide margin considering how tight those 8 were). But still, even seeing the shadow move by a few feet on that curved wall is 20 min tops. Maybe Tony & Stephanie had a flat tire :funny:

Having climbed to more than 16000 feet, (Mt Kenya), I remember the headache, sleeplessness, and fatigue pretty well.
I am thinking that all of our guys (not just Mark) may well feel the effects of the altitude here, perhaps making them even more cranky w/ each other than usual?
Our racers have no chance to follow the recommended acclimitisation and certainly no chance to rest and take it easy for a few days...

Banzai, are you sure you don't mean Mate de Coca tea? The website you provided says it is cocoa tea, but I believe that its authors are substituting "Cocoa" for "coca" in their translation to English. Here are some statements from a variety of articles:

About the tea: TAR7 racers were given some mate at the Cusco airport. They didn't have to pay, and I'm not sure if it was sponsored by production or the city/airport (about 4:10 into the video here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BgfIwk6OVGo)). It's not illegal in Bolivia (far from it), so either it wasn't handed out this time for unknown reasons, or it was used but just didn't "take" (El Alto is nearly 700m higher than Cusco).

Michael, I basicallly agree with you. It looks like mid-afternoon to me and on April 27, sunrise was at 644am and sunset was 617pm. With the shadows of a mid-afternoon sun that was in the southwest, I am going to take a guess at direction and say that they are walking in the direction of northeast.
EDITOR's NOTE - I have fogotten that in the fall the sun in the Southern Hemisphere should move from northeast to northwest. In mid afternoon, that would make the shadows be in the direction of southeast.

Here's a fresh look at all the possible flight routes that teams could take going from Fortaleza to La Paz.
The constraints I have used to make this collection are 1) Teams can catch their flight out as early as 2 am on April 26th 2) Teams must arrive at La Paz airport by 2 pm in the afternoon of April 27th

So, in summary, the best possibility will be the route leaving as late as 8:00 am from FOR to GRU to EZE to LIM to LPB arriving at 12:20 am on the 27th. :jam: That route does contain an iffy connection time of 45 min in Lima. Maybe that is too risky :ascared, so the next best route leaves at 6:05 am from FOR to GRU to MIA to LPB arriving at 5:30 am on the 27th. :jam: All the routes using Santa Cruz arrive as early as 7:45 am on the 27th (if the 7:45 am flight is full they have to use the next one arriving in La Paz at 2:00 pm). The Cuzco way will put teams into La Paz at 10:55 am on the 27th.

So we think teams basically all arrive in El Alto at the same time? Teams perform the Cholita Roadblock in order of arrival but there is something the Roadblocker has to do to earn the clue, maybe stay away from the Cholita and not get knocked down after so many minutes? something something, if you fail you go to the back of the line and wait your turn, over and over until the task is completed the right way. The teams earn one of those "departure times" by completing the Roadblock in fastest to slowest? The teams stay somewhere in El Alto that night causing Nick to push Christy's sports bra off the ledge? :funny: Teams depart El Alto by taxi? in order of the departure times?
Some choose the Detours: Flintstones bikes or shopping list?.. something something... We know there's a U-Turn ..someone someone or maybe not
I guess it depends on which Detour fits what team like if the Blonds choose shopping, this might be right up their alley, they are girls that like to shop afterall :monroe:
order of pitstop arrival? your guess is as good as mine based on no real promo evidence at all but I'll guess Ken & Tina finish top 3.

I did all the analyses(except Cuzco; I stopped at Lima; also, you did not show anything connecting through Asuncion) you show and your results do not match mine as displayed on Timetables and Flight Information thread for May 27 starting after 1201 am.
JJ3325 FOR GRU 0730 1130 connecting in Sao Paulo with 5L301 GRU VVI 1600 1730 combined with 5L211 VVI LPB is the best. You can take JJ3323 FOR GRU 0030 0500, and it gets yoou to VVI sooner, but it does not get you to LPB until the same flight as above. A request to see if starting at midnight you could get to LPB earlier tielded a negative result. These reults are 4 hours 20 minutes before your routes get teams to LaPaz.

If it was a regular 12 hour Pit Stop then they would have started at 12:51 am on April 26th (Ken & Tina). They said nothing about the flights :duno: Our best possible flight construction would have them reaching La Paz at 8:00 pm also on the 26th. So, after sleeping with Simon Bolivar, they would have awakened on the morning of the 27th.
And they arrived in darkness at EL Alto airport La Paz, so the 8:00 pm is okay. But we know that all the activities happened on April 28th from our spoiler witness. One day unaccounted for.
I guess it has to have been an extended Pit Stop in Forteleza. Lots of time to toss underwear about. This was not where we expected one because we are sure there has to be one in La Paz. And I don't remember there ever being extended Pit Stops back-to-back before. :duno:

I am pretty sure we are on the same page. The flight graphic on last night's episode leads one to think it was a direct flight. The TAR producers had enough good footage that they did not need to say that the flights went from city A, to B, to C, to La Paz.

hey, let me help narrow your search on the minaret. Kazakhstan is a Muslim country. Except for a very small amount, Msocow would not be littered with minarets. I don't recall seeing any there, but I did not get all over this city of 10 million people. I advise focus on Almaty.
EDITOR'S NOTE - I took my own advice. There are 3 mosques in Almaty, but none matches. I also applied it to Moscow, where there are no mosques. There are only 8 in all of Russia and none of those matches(except I don't know about the one with no picture).

The minaret in the shot looks like it could have been built prior to 1947. Barring the extreme case that minarets were torn down after 1947 I'd say searching India is a good idea at this point

Of course you can't see mountains that far away due to the curvature of the earth. It is physically impossible. According to an authoritative source, "Due to the curvature of the earth, the line of sight for devices not mounted on towers is limited to 16 miles (26km)." 105 miles is almost 7 times further.

Thanks, Slowhatch. one thing I learned from the National Geographic video you recommended is that thte cholitas fight on Sundays. That would be April 27 and Chateau cites the evidence of the date in the newspaper that AR13 teams visited the cholitas at el Alto Mulitfunctional Arena on April 28, which is Mopnday. That means that all fighters and maybe the crowd would have to have been paid to participate.

That would be April 27 and Chateau cites the evidence of the date in the newspaper that AR13 teams visited the cholitas as el Alto Fulitfunctional Arena on April 28, which is Monday. That means that all fighters and maybe the crowd would have to have been paid to participate.
I suspect the crowd was recruited by TAR and signed waivers to appear on TV. You may have noticed other people, especially at airports, with their faces digitally smudged to hide their identities. No signed waiver, no face on TV.

On the minaret, this is crazy huh? I'll laugh my ass off if its something we missed in Bolivia! But that turns up nothing, for me anyway so who knows.........
I tried about every combination that I could think of ..some samples off the top of my head :umn: just "minaret" minaret search every place they are going or have been, yes even South America! mosque with square minaret minaret on Church minaret on castle sphere mosque aka minaret ..ball topped :lol:

I love your Egyptian minaret, puddin. Maybe it denotes a certain sect of Islam. Just to confuse things, I found this picture described only as "One of Almaty's mosques". :angel:
Too bad we can't see the top, but a few of the features are similar. At least we know that some minarets in Almaty have roofs. :lol:

Boingo, it is logical that the mosque should be in Almaty and not in Auckland, Delhi, or Mosscow. However, I can't match up your information with any of the 4(up one from yesterday) mosques in Almaty. Here is the revised list:

Places of religious worship are also being built in Almaty. Alongside a number of newly erected mosques and Orthodox churches, special mention should be made of the Egyptian Islamic Center and the Mubarak Islamic University - the Egyptian Government's gift to Almaty.
As regards the cultural cooperation between the two countries, Kazakhstan is the only country in central Asia where there is an Egyptian cultural center and university at the same time, in Almaty there exist the Egyptian Cultural Center and Noor Mubarak University for Islamic Studies, where Egypt funds the salaries of the professors staff through Ministry of Awquaf, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Al-Azhar Al-Sharif and Ministry of Higher Education). The university offers educational and training services for 850 students in a number of specifications: (Islamic Studies, Arabic and English languages, Arabic and translation, and religion).
Egypt offers to the Kazakhstani universities, including Noor Mubarak University, 22 Egyptian professors, and offers 6 scholarships for Egyptian students for the PhD.
