Names: Marisa Axelrod and Brooke Jackson
Ages: 22, 24
Occupations: Student, graphic designer
Hometown: Columbia, SC
Relationship: Southern Belles (Is that a relationship?)

These charming southern belles are best friends and are up for any challenge. They want to prove to the world that they’re not just cute blondes and that they can be athletic, cut-throat competitors.

Marisa is currently a broadcast journalism student at the University of South Carolina. She describes herself as ambitious, witty and spontaneous. Her extensive dance training has taught her to be focused and determined, skills that could help her to do well on the race.

Brooke is fascinated with other cultures and can’t wait to try out some of the Spanish she learned while living in Spain. She works as a graphic designer and enjoys traveling, painting and being outdoors. She believes that her take-charge attitude will be enough to get them through the rigors of the Race.

She and her best friend are certain this adventure will make them even better friends. And if they have to do a little flirting along the way, they’re not opposed to that either – whatever it takes to cross the finish line in first place.

Spartanburg native primed for 'Amazing Race'

Don't let the pink outfit and the Palmetto State-bred smile fool you

Marisa Axelrod is a 22-year-old Spartanburg native whom the world is about to witness in the biggest race of her life, and her family says the Southern belle has got the attitude she needs to win.

"To me it's going to be shocking (to others) because she's such a girly-girl," said mother Lori Axelrod. "She's sweet and caring, but at the same time competitive."

Axelrod and best friend Brooke Jackson, a 24-year-old graphic designer from Columbia, will compete in the upcoming installment of the reality show "The Amazing Race," set to premiere at 8 p.m. Sept. 28 on CBS.

The ladies will join 10 other teams who will travel more than 30,000 miles, spanning five continents. The 13th season of "Race" will feature a fistful of firsts, including teams traveling to what the show calls "a floating city." There are also stops at first-time "Race" destinations such as Cambodia and Kazakhstan.

At every location, each pair will have to compete in a series of mental and physical challenges and must overcome those challenges to learn their next destination.

Marisa Axelrod was unavailable for comment on Wednesday, but CBS representatives are permitting an interview today.

Lori Axelrod had never watched the reality show until her daughter auditioned, she said. But Marisa has been dancing at her grandmother's studio, Miss Marion's School of Dance in Spartanburg, since she was 3, and Alexrod said her daughter has the drive to do well.

"All her life, she's been in dance competitions, and that certainly helps," Lori Axelrod said. "Dancing gives you poise and confidence."

On the show's biography Web page, Axelrod contends her extensive dance training will help her be focused and determined during "Race."

Grandmother Marion Feinstein said no one was more taken aback by the trip than she was. She and Marisa share a close bond, but even Feinstein wasn't let in on the show secret. In April, Marisa told her family she was going to Paris for a school trip, Feinstein said.

"It was very hush-hush," she said. "There's no name calling me 'grandma' because Marisa and I are best friends. And wow, when I heard the news, I don't think anything in my life has been as exciting."

Axelrod is a broadcast journalism student at the University of South Carolina. She describes herself as "ambitious, witty and spontaneous."

Joining her at USC Columbia this year is little sister Shauna Axelrod, 18, of Spartanburg, who said she is inspired by her sister's experience.

"I think it's awesome," Shauna said. "Of course she's my older sis and I look up to her, but I've learned to take more risks and be outgoing (from watching her)."

Shauna said she plans to watch each episode at her sister's apartment in Columbia.

Gal pals Marisa and Brooke are competing, among other things, to be the first "Amazing Race" all-female team to take the $1 million prize. Marisa's mom thinks she's got what it takes.

"She's a go-getter," Axelrod said. "If she puts her mind to something, she'll do it full out."

Michael:

I think you are right. It is unlikely we are going to see a female/female team in either AR13 or ARA3 with the combination of intelligence, strength, and endurance that Dustin and Kandace have.

Hello RFF!!!!
First of all I want to say THANK YOU  to RFF!!!  I don't know what I would have done without this forum!!!  Brooke and Marisa had been gone several days when I decided to google TAR13 and lo and behold I found this site!  The first thing I read was 2 blondes in pink were spotted at LAX talking to cameramen on April 22 and I got sooo excited I didn't know what to do!!  You didn't spoil a thing for us but I did get a kick out of ya'll trying to figure out what happened to the blondes because there were no pictures  appearing of them.  It was exciting following where they were even if we didn't know if they were still in the race or not!  I wanted to post so bad but was afraid CBS might not like it!  When Brooke and Marisa arrived back in Columbia the first thing I did was show them this site and we stayed up all night reading the posts!  Ya'll are GOOD!!  I was amazed that information was coming from sitings all over the world!  You guys made the race so exciting for me while Brooke was gone!  I think everyone will enjoy seeing Brooke and Marisa.  They are such sweet girls and I think everyone will find the profile of cookie cutter blondes in pink very misleading.  These are tough girls that had a blast but worked themselves to death!  Thanks for helping this poor, worried mom get through the race!!!

Hi Becky/Brooke's Mom/Sweet Tea!

We are thrilled to have been any comfort to you at all--and all I can say is about time we got some more Southern ladies on around here! :hearts: We often stay up all night around here ourselves so chime in anytime, we always can provide a nice pitcher of "sweet tea"!

It means so much to hear that we helped a little bit, and can't wait to see the girls in action! Hope you have a wonderful premiere party--will you send us some pictures? We'd love to see them!

Thanks so much for letting us know, and for joining in all the fun here!

Hey there Ken and Peach!  Thanks for the kind welcome!
Sweet Tea has a special meaning for the south as you probably know Peach.  Anytime Brooke has traveled, that is the one thing she misses most about home so I always make a point to have her a big glass of sweet iced tea when I pick her up at the airport!  A little taste of the south!
Although I love SC Peach, I grew up in Atlanta so I will always have a little Georgia red clay running through my veins!

We'll take lots of pictures at the party and get them to you as soon as we can...anyone close enough to Columbia, SC is welcomed to come too!!!  Ahhhh...let's see, I believe the date is
SEPTEMBER 28!!!    :yess:

S.C. duo ready for ‘Amazing Race’
The contestants on the upcoming season of “The Amazing Race” will face a new set of challenges, like a trek to a floating city and trips to Cambodia and Kazakhstan.

But are they ready for the girls in pink?

One of 11 teams set to race around the world, Marisa Axelrod, 22, and Brooke Jackson, 24, hope to make South Carolina proud with a lethal combination of Southern charm and quick wit.

“Some people might buy into the dumb blond stereotype,” Axelrod says. “But I’d like to say we’re pretty smart.”

Here are a few things you should know about this Southern belle duo before tonight’s season premiere:

• Jackson is a graphic designer from Columbia and former cheerleader. Axelrod is a broadcast journalism major at USC and a jazz and tap dancer from Spartanburg.

• When they met at a USC football game three years ago, they were wearing the same outfit. “We do a lot of matching,” Axelrod said. “Pink is our favorite color.”

• Axelrod and Jackson laced up their tennis shoes for frequent running sessions to prepare for the physical challenge of the show.

• International travel shouldn’t be much of a stretch for them. Jackson studied in Spain and Axelrod has traveled to Paris, London and Amsterdam.

• They’ve never had a fight and relied on their good communications skills to guide them through the challenges.

• They may make it look easy on TV, but “The Amazing Race” is tough work. “I don’t think anyone understands how hard it is,” Axelrod says. “You’re on the spot and you don’t have a chance to think.”

One of biggest complaints Becky is that the opening show should be 1 1/2 to 2 hours but they won't listen to us  :umn:.
I was laughing at the insider clips, when they were using what I think are "pink" dental floss harps in the camping scene, lol
And next weeks previews look great, lots of Brooke and Marisa scenes  :hearts:

TARCon is usually held on the day/night of the finale. It's a great time.

Peach and Chateau are the veterans of TARCon from here. They can fill you in on everything. I went for the first time earlier this year.

Here's a report from the last TARCon (http://fangsbites.blogspot.com/2008/01/report-from-tarcon-12.html) that I posted on my blog.

Yep!  I do believe that is what Brooke told me she and Marisa were planning to attend...I know they are going to NYC for the finale!  Oh finale is such a sad word!  I've been waiting on Sept. 28 since February 28 and I don't like the sound of the word finale! :'(

Here is where it gets organized:  TARcon (http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=3163497)

I'm guessing that the finale will be on December 7th.  Puddin may know if that is true or not yet.  If CBS skips a Sunday in the sequence of broadcasting out 11 Episodes then the date moves ahead by a week.  That is also a guess.

Phil usually comes:

I had a dream no to long ago that I was in a park and I saw the finish line for TAR and I just saw two blonds in pink running to the mat. my first thought was "holy cow the amazing race" and "awesome a female team won finally."
So idk if it's a foreshadowing of somthing to come? I hope it is though ;)

An interview with Marisa and Brooke:

Exclusive Interview: Marisa and Brooke, from 'The Amazing Race 13'

They tried their best.  Marisa and Brooke struggled in all four of the legs they participated in during The Amazing Race 13, but they did so with a positive attitude.  They were a fun team, had a good time, didn't allow any pettiness or anger seep into their game play but, unfortunately, they just weren't that great of a team.  Sometimes people just aren't cut out for The Amazing Race.  Thankfully, we had the opportunity to speak with Marisa and Brooke earlier this morning about their time on The Amazing Race.

Hey this is Oscar Dahl from BuddyTV and I'm here with Marisa and Brooke form the Amazing Race 13.  Marisa, Brooke, how are you two doing?

Marisa: Good! How are you?

Brooke: Doing great.

Great. What was it like watching last night's episode, was that kind of tough?

Marisa: It was really tough re-watching it.  We cried watching it last night.

It wasn't totally clear what happened on your way to the harbor or on the rest of the leg.  What made you guys get lost?

Marisa: First of all, we were on the very back of the plane, this huge airplane. Everyone else got off before we got off.  And we took awhile to get through security, awhile to get to our car.  The whole thing was really frustrating - driving on the opposite side of the car, on the opposite side of the road, it was dark outside, I don't drive very well at nighttime. Just trying to read the directions we had printed up on the internet.  It was a three hour drive to the harbor, we stopped at a gas station because we were getting a little bit turned around and we were going to follow a cop there and he ended up not showing up and he said that he would, so that wasted a lot of time right there and from then on a couple times we got lost, turned around and we had to stop and make sure we were on the right path.  That put us really far behind everybody.

Brooke: Basically everything we did that day, we had a problem, something happened to us.  It was very frustrating, because we didn't want to give up.

Marisa: We just kept trying to stay positive and thinking "Maybe everybody else is just as lost as we are, maybe people get tired, maybe something happened to put them farther behind.

Brooke: We knew when we got to Gulf Harbor, when we had to find the Knot, we knew we were very far behind because there were families on their yachts and they woke up and they were like "Oh, we heard y'all a long time ago, y'all are a little late."  We knew we were far behind.

On the episode last night, they made it seem like you guys made a pretty big comeback. Do you know how far behind Aja and Ty you were?

Marisa: We were within minutes of them.  I think it was neck and neck.  They didn't really know who was going to be eliminated until Aja and Ty showed up.

Brooke: It was really sad watching, it was so intense and we were like "God, what happened?  We could have done this."

Over the course of the season, is there anything that CBS edited out that you wish they had shown of you guys?

Marisa: There are clips at CBS.com that are really funny.  I wish the show were like an hour and a half.

Brooke: We wish the shuttle scene when we met Dan and Andrew was there.  They were the first team we met.  Some of their interviews they kept saying, "We're not gonna let a couple of girls get in the way of us."  Then they were like "Oh, let's help each other out."  It was a fun scene to watch.

What was your favorite place to visit over those first four legs?

Brooke: I think we both loved New Zealand.  It was just gorgeous there.

Marisa: Even though the whole time we were really frustrated and we were ready to be done with the leg, but it was gorgeous and I definitely want to go back.  Everyone was so nice.

Brooke: The people there are wonderful.  Everyone there is so friendly.

What was most different about the race than what you two expected going in?

Marisa:  Well, Brooke and I had studied it kind of before we watched previous seasons and we really admired Dustin and Kandice for an all-female team, so we kind of came up with strategies and took notes on what to do and what not to do, but watching it on TV is so much more different than actually doing it.  It looks so much more easier to watch.  So, I don't think people realize how hard it is and how your body is drained, you're exhausted, but you don't want to give up because there's that million dollars.

Marisa, Brooke what do you two have planned for the future?

Brooke: Um, well I just started a new job last week, I'm still doing Graphic Design in Columbia, whatever comes my way I'm up for anything.

Marisa: Same for me too.  I graduate in December, so I'm looking for jobs right now and hopefully something good comes along the way.

We wish you two luck in the future, and thank you for stopping by and talking to us.

Thank you.

Hey Everyone!
THe interview that is posted above actually has audio, which is better b/c not everything is transcripted correctly. Some of the quotes were from me, not Marisa and vice versa. So I'd suggest going to the link and listening :)

Also, thanks to everyone for your support and for sweet messages. It was a really rough day for us....but at least we got to go to Acapulco! Don't forget to check out Elimination Station!

xo,
Brooke

Another interview with Marisa and Brooke:   :'(   :'(

Exclusive: Marisa Axelrod, Brooke Jackson talk about 'The Amazing Race'

After three legs, Marisa Axelrod and Brooke Jackson had begun making steps towards overcoming a disappointing The Amazing Race 13 start and being taken more seriously by the other teams in the competition.

However, complications and a dash of bad luck in the fourth leg undid all the progress that the "Friends" had made, as Marisa and Brooke became the fourth team to be eliminated from the show in last night's broadcast on CBS.

On Monday, Marisa and Brooke spoke to Reality TV World about what problems they encountered on the flight to -- and upon their arrival in -- New Zealand, how the light air in Bolivia affected them all the way to their elimination in Auckland, and why they were so "surprised" that they called a member of another team on Sunday after watching the broadcast.

Reality TV World: So how'd you both end up on the show? Who's idea was it?

Marisa: Brooke:...

Brooke: Oh, I'm sorry what was the question?

Reality TV World: Who's idea was it to apply for the show?

Marisa: I think it was both of our ideas as a good chance to go out and travel the world together and do things that we would probably never get to do if we hadn't done The Amazing Race.

Brooke: It's just a once in a lifetime opportunity. The prize is $1 million but the experience is worth way more than $1 million.

Reality TV World: Was this the first time that either one of you had applied for the show or had you done it before?

Marisa: Yeah it was the first time that we both applied.

Reality TV World: You were in last place right from the moment you got out of the Auckland airport and never really recovered from it. Was there a reason for that? Did you get delayed in customs or something?

Marisa: The whole day just did not seem to go our way. In Bolivia, I think we were the second people to get our tickets in line, so we thought we were ahead of everyone. We asked to be in front of the plane but when we got to the airport and changed to the flight to New Zealand the plane was way big and we were the furthest ones in the back of the plane. We had to go through security, which was just awful.

We just kept being the last ones, even though we were trying to hurry. We were the last ones to the car, that kind of held us back. And then we went to the gas station because we got lost (laughs) so we asked if we could call a cop and if we could follow a cop to Gulf Harbor and we waited about 45 minutes, which put us even further behind.

Brooke: Yeah, the cop... He said he was coming but he never showed up so from there we went on our own and the we just got lost again. It was dark outside and I was on the wrong side of the car, the wrong side of the road (laughs).

It was just really frustrating. We knew we were last. We were hoping that someone else maybe got really, really lost and they were just as far back as we were, or that it was a non-elimination round. Yeah we were like "Maybe it's a non-elimination."

So we just kept trying to think positive, but you know... We had a feeling we were at the end of the pack.

Reality TV World: So all-in-all, how long do you think it took for you to get from the airport to the harbor?

Brooke: It took three hours!  Well, that's how long it took if you went straight there, it's a three-hour trip. But it took us longer because we got turned around and stopped and asked directions. It was a long trip!

Reality TV World: And then once you got there, was there any particular reason why you guys had such a hard time finding the gordian knot?

Marisa: We had never heard of a gordian knot. We were so confused to begin with. Then we get there -- and we already knew that people had been there before us because we actually woke up families who were sleeping on their yachts and they were like "Oh, we heard y'all a long time ago," -- and we asked them for help but no one knew what it was. All of the sudden I think we both looked to the left and there was this huge knot that I guess we [had] just kept passing one million times, which was very aggravating for us.

Brooke: We kept thinking that it would maybe be like a knot on a boat, or the name of a boat. So we kept looking at stuff on the boats. We didn't even think to look for something sitting on the dock. It was at the end of this long dock going out to the side from the main part of the dock. So, we just weren't looking in the right place.

Reality TV World: About how long do you think that took?

Brooke: Oh, it took... probably I'd at least say maybe even longer than 45 minutes. Because we were going up and down [the docks]. Oh my gosh, it was awful.

Reality TV World: All the teams seemed to be a lot of complaining about that kiwi juice challenge -- how hard was it for you?

Brooke: At first we were like "Oh my gosh, nothing's coming out!" But then I got out and looked at it and I saw that there was a lever, and I pulled it and [the juice] all started pouring out.

Then we just kept mushing [the kiwis] and we filled up both of the buckets. It was hard drinking it (laughs). But I think a lot of people just couldn't find the lever.

Marisa: Right.

Reality TV World: So that's why the juice wasn't coming out of the spout and everyone was just staring at it during the show?

Marisa: Yeah some of the people who were doing it, theirs were clogged. We just got lucky. I thought, that by watching it, we got through all of our challenges pretty quick. It was just moving from place to place.

Reality TV World: Last time-related question... How far do you think you were behind [Aja Benton] and [Ty White] by the end of the race?

Marisa: I think we were really close to them. Like maybe 10 minutes.

Brooke: Yeah, it was about 10 minutes, I'm pretty sure.

Reality TV World: Was there any point during the leg that you thought you were getting back into it and had a chance to get ahead of [Aja and Ty]?

Marisa: I think that our attitude was that we wanted to stay positive and to not give up. So we knew we were pretty much in last, but anything can go wrong in a race, like Ty and Aja [getting] a flat tire. Someone could have gotten just as lost as us. So we were kind of hoping for that.

But even though we were that far behind we did not want to give up on our challenges and just kinda flake out. We wanted to get through everything at least so we knew that we got it done.

Reality TV World: Ok, and now actually shifting to some good luck you had with: Cabs, or so it seemed at least. During last week's leg in La Paz, you managed to jump from sixth to fourth in the cab ride to the Pit Stop. Did you just have a good driver?

Brooke: We had an awesome cab driver. He just knew exactly where we were going. He didn't stop and ask for directions. If we got stuck in a little bit of traffic he would... I mean, he kinda did have a little road rage...

But we just kept telling him "We have to get there quick!" and he just listened to us and he got us there.

Marisa: Exactly.

Reality TV World: During last week's leg, had you contemplated using the U-Turn on anyone?

Marisa: We knew when we had gotten there that we were second or third, so we were pretty much ahead of everyone and we had no reason to use a U-Turn, and we kind of liked everybody.

We knew people had thought about U-Turning [Christie Cook] and [Kelly Crabb] but we had no reason to do it to them. I think we just wanted to play [as] the nice girls.

Reality TV World: In the most recent episode showed that you had struck up some sort of alliance with [Andrew Lappitt] and [Dan Honig]. Were you closest with them on the race?

Marisa: We were very close with them. They were the first team that we met on the shuttle to the way to the airport going towards LAX so I guess by meeting them first... I don't wanna say that we formed an alliance then, but we pretty much just always teamed up with them.

Reality TV World: So how did you feel when, last night, when they said they'd allied with you because you were one of the weaker teams?

(both laugh)

Marisa: I tried calling Dan last night to tell him how I felt because we all thought we were so close. So we um... I think both of us were a little surprised. Only because I talk to Dan on, like, a daily basis so I thought, you know, that we were friends. I didn't like them talking about us.

Reality TV World: Oh, you guys stayed in touch?

Marisa: Oh yeah, I talk to Dan quite a lot. We talk to all of [the other teams]. I mean, not on the phone but through email.

Reality TV World: Were there any teams that you got along better or worse with?

Brooke: We really got along with everyone really well. We made stronger connections with [Anthony Marotta] and [Stephanie Kacandes] at the beginning. And then we sort of started teaming up with [Ken Greene] and [Tina Greene] -- in the airports we would research flights together and we kinda stuck together. They were kind of like our "Mom and Dad." And Andrew and Dan a little bit at the beginning. But other than that, I mean we didn't really have an alliance with anybody, but there were teams that we kind of grew closer to.

Marisa: When we got to [Elimination Station in] Acupulco we got very close with [Mark Yturralde] and [Bill Hahler]. We didn't get to hang out that much with them on the race. But we really got to get to know them.

Brooke: I loved them.

Reality TV World: Are there any teams you didn't get along with?

Marisa: I think we got along with everybody. We had no reason to fight with anyone and didn't really want to get in any of the drama that was going on. We didn't even know what was going on when we watched it this week. We didn't know that happened.

Reality TV World: This might be what you're talking about, but several of the teams seemed to be having issues with [Nick Spangler] and [Starr Spangler] -- what was your opinion them?

Both: No.

Brooke: We kept hearing that people had problems with Nick and Starr and we were like "We don't know why because they seemed so nice." We were always really friendly with them. So we never understood [that] and didn't know about all of the conflicts and stories and stuff that was going on.

Reality TV World: So you weren't around for any of that stuff with Kelly and Christie and the sports bra?

Marisa: We heard about it, we weren't there when it all happened.

Reality TV World: Did you see when [Terrence Gerchberg] got mad at [Sarah Leshner] during the first week for talking to other teams?  Were you involved in that?

Brooke: Actually I didn't even know that he was even mad at Sarah. I mean I'm sure she talked to us, we kind of talked to everybody. But I wasn't aware that he was, like, not wanting to talk to other teams.

Marisa: I don't think he had a problem with her talking to us, I think it was moreso her talking to Mark and Bill or Tina and Ken because he probably didn't think we were that competitive.

Brooke: Yeah, he probably didn't think of us as much of a threat (laughs)

Marisa: Exactly.

Reality TV World: What was your take on that second leg incident where Tina ran around telling everyone she had convinced the airline to switch to a bigger plane -- do you believe that's what happened?

Marisa: We had gotten there a little later than when that had happened, but if it wasn't for Tina then we wouldn't have all been on that flight together. I think she really helped everybody out. I mean I don't blame her for wanting to take full credit for that, she did all of that on her own.

Reality TV World: Did you do anything special -- physical or mental -- to prepare for the Race?

Brooke: I worked right up until the start of [The Amazing Race] but I would try and run and work out whenever I could. But if I could do it over again I would definitely practice running with my backpack, because that is a whole other story.

Marisa: Before we went we watched some of [the show's] older seasons and kind of studied different strategies of what to do and what not to do, but I guess when you're in the moment... You know it just looks so much easier when you're watching on television and then actually doing it. I think a lot of people realized that.

Reality TV World: Do either of you have a favorite experience on The Amazing Race?

Marisa: I think the whole thing was just an incredible experience. Sleeping in the jungle, going to New Zealand, and sleeping next to Simon Bolivar. Everything we did was just an experience.

Brooke: I just think a lot of it was facing our fears. Like the cargo net, I hate heights! But honestly I wasn't even scared when I was doing it. I was just glad that I was facing a fear and I was proud of us for doing that.

I just couldn't wait to go back home and tell, and to see our families reactions to what we did. They were so proud of us.

Reality TV World: Did you have a least favorite experience?

Marisa: I know for me it was [that] boat that we were pushing [during the second leg]. When we were done with it we were so glad that we did it because I don't think that was the thing that we wanted to do. It was awful, it was miserable, it was hot. We thought we were in really good shape but... I thought I was gonna die of a heat stroke (laughs). Plus we were dehydrated.

Brooke: Yeah, really dehydrated.

Marisa: I think our dads were proud of us, having these strong daughters (both laugh)

Reality TV World:  What aspect of The Amazing Race surprised you the most?

Brooke: I think a lot of it was, you know, if you get a good cab or not. It might not necessarily be how athletic somebody is, or how smart somebody is. I mean look at Mark and Bill, they're so smart but they're eliminated.  I think a lot of people think that you have to be in top condition...

Marisa: ... or really, really smart...

Brooke: ...or a world traveler and know 10 languages. But that's not it, anybody can do it.

Reality TV World: Is there anything that you expected to see make it onto the show that was edited out?

Marisa: From the first episode, we wanted the whole shuttle thing to be on there where we met Dan and Andrew. It's on CBS.com but we thought, going back and watching it, it's hilarious because in some of their interviews they say they're not going to let girls get in the way of them. Then right when the whole thing starts, when we got to the airport we were the first two teams who met each other and they were like "Ok, so do y'all wanna work together?" (laughs)

Brooke: I think most of he clips that are on CBS.com show some of the best parts that are just funny. I wish that they would have put some more of that on the air.

Reality TV World: Was there any particular team you began rooting for once you were eliminated?

Brooke: Oh, we're both rooting for Tina and Ken

Reality TV World: Brooke, at the beginning of the Race's second leg you acknowledged that both you and Marisa needed to be  "tougher" and "more aggressive" in the race. Do you think you two were able to do that?

Brooke: Um, let's see... I think that we definitely were in Bolivia. We had fun with it [and] we pushed ourselves and we ended up coming out a lot better than we [had before]. In New Zealand however I don't think that we did. I mean we tried our hardest, we did, but we were still really sick from the altitude and everything which sort of made us weak and tired.

But, I mean, I don't know. I think that we did push ourselves as hard as we could.

Marisa: I think that our main thing is even though it just wasn't our day in New Zealand we wanted to get through every single task. We didn't want to stop in the middle of it and give up. Even though we knew we were kinda far behind, we didn't want [The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan] to come and meet us where we were at if we didn't get to the finish line or anything and say "Hey, you girls are eliminated, don't bother doing that."

Brooke: We wanted to get through every single thing and say "Hey, at least we accomplished that and we didn't give up."

We kept thinking [Phil] was gonna pop out of a bush somewhere and tell us we're gone. (laughs)

Reality TV World: We've seen Ken's whistle and Mark and Bill's small backpacks. Did either of you bring anything unique on the race to help you?

Marisa: Before we left, Brooke and I packed so much stuff. I have my hair straightener in there -- I don't know why I ever thought to bring that -- and we had perfumes and all kinds of hair products.

Brooke: You did! (laughs)

Marisa: (laughs) Yeah, I did. But we definitely condensed our backpacks, and I think that helped us out.

My mom packed candy for us, and we had food and stuff too. But, if there's one [piece of] advice I could give to anyone who's about to go on the race it is to get a much smaller backpack than we did.

Reality TV World: You just referred to it before, but last week we saw a bunch of teams struggle with the light air in Bolivia, how did you both fare?

Brooke: We definitely needed to get on oxygen tanks as well -- they just didn't show it -- at the Pit Stop. We would walk up like, three stairs and want to pass out. We had awful migraine headaches...

Marisa: (interrupting) Uh-huh.

Brooke: It really took a toll on us. That night I had cold pills. Yeah, it was really bad, it was miserable. I was ready to get out of there.

Reality TV World: What are you both doing now? CBS listed Marisa as being in school for broadcast journalism and Brooke as a graphic designer before the race.

Brooke: Uh huh. That's what I'm still doing. I just started a new job.

Marisa: And I'll graduate in December so I'm excited.

Another interview with Marisa and Brooke:

"In New Zealand everything was backwards"

You started the New Zealand leg on an equal playing field after all of the teams got caught up at the airport. So, what went wrong?
Brooke: We were the last ones off of the plane and the last team to get a car. We didn't even know how to get out of the parking lot. Everything we did that day was just a big confusing mess.
Marisa: Everything was backwards. We were on the other side of the car, driving on the other side of the road. We just got confused and we were still dealing with the altitude sickness we got in Bolivia.
Brooke: I was half asleep but I was trying. I was so nervous that we'd get really, really lost on our way to the harbor that we stopped a lot to make sure we were going the right direction. They didn't really show it but we went to a gas station and asked if we could follow a cop to the harbor. We ended up waiting for 45 minutes and the cop never showed.

Did you have an alliance going with Andrew and Dan?
Brooke: We did at first.
Marisa: We would kind of help each other out and research flights together on people's laptops. But when we got to Bolivia they got a little sketchy on us so we decided to move away from them.

Was New Zealand as beautiful as it looked on TV?
Brooke: It was beautiful. We want to go back when we're not under stress.
Marisa: I definitely want to go back there on vacation. It was so pretty and the people there are so nice, which we loved.
Brooke: And very good-looking.

What was it like stomping all those kiwis?
Brooke: It was a lot harder than it looked. Our feet were all cut up.
Marisa: It was kind of fun. We were laughing. But at the same time, the little seeds and the stems cut up our feet. And it was freezing outside.
Brooke: Stomping on those kiwis was a good stress reliever.

What was the hardest part of running the race?
Brooke: Just having to drive in New Zealand. We were used to getting in a taxi and telling them where to go. Riding along is different than having to get there by ourselves.
Marisa: It was a lot of driving. And looking back on it, perhaps we should have gotten a map sooner. That may have helped us out a lot more.
Brooke: Yeah. It was the middle of the day before we finally got a map.

Who are you rooting for now?
Brooke: We love Tina and Ken.
Marisa: They were like our mom and dad.

An interview with Marisa and Brooke:

Southern Belles Reveal What You Didn’t See on The Amazing Race

Brooke and Marisa, the pink-clad, self-described southern belles, were sent packing from The Amazing Race Sunday, leaving seven teams racing to the finish line. Brooke, 24, and Marisa, 22, back in their native Columbia, S.C., caught up with PEOPLE by phone Monday to talk about what they learned along the way, what you didn’t see on television and keeping up with a galaxy of new Facebook friends. – Nicholas White

What did you learn about each other during The Amazing Race?
Brooke: I think we learned to trust each other better.
Marisa: Definitely trust and communication. For me, I thought Brooke was a very girly girl. She definitely proved me wrong by sleeping in the jungle, and on the concrete in Bolivia. We learned that there is more to us than going out and shopping, the normal things we do here in Columbia.

Who on the Race was unfriendly?
M: We had that impression at first of Kelly and Christy, because they were the only other all-female team. They did stick to themselves. They didn’t really become great friends with anybody else. But after the show, we’re great friends. Everybody is very competitive when you’re in it to win money!

What troubles did you have that we didn’t see?
M: When we were in New Zealand, Brooke and I had this great idea.
B: We were already getting lost a lot. It was really confusing. It took us forever.
M: We thought, “Let’s call a cop and follow him to Gulf Harbor, and get there 1-2-3.” We ended up waiting for 45 minutes and the cop never showed up. There was a lot of stuff they didn’t show. They didn’t show us in the car fall asleep while Brooke was driving. Everything we did that day just did not go our way.

Which teams do you still talk to?
B: We keep in touch with Steph and Anthony quite often. I even talk to Kelly and Christy.
M: I talk to Dan a lot, just about three or four times a week!
B: A couple of us got together and watched the second episode. We got each other’s email addresses, also through Facebook. Everyone gives each other updates. It’s just cool to see all the fans that were watching us. That was a very good feeling. When I woke up this morning and checked Facebook, we had all these people writing [about] much they loved us. I was crying last night. People liked us. That’s what we wanted. A lot of people from other countries [contact us].
M: And a lot of young boys too!

What’s your advice to future teams?
M: I would go back and do it again now that I know what happened. I think the game is merely luck. You have to be physically fit. Make sure you have a very small backpack!
B: Practice running around with your backpack. Sometimes it comes down to whether you have a good taxi driver or not. A lot of other teams researched airports and other countries, and all this detail. Brooke and I didn’t do any of that. I worked right up until we left. It was hard for us to prepare.
M: We studied different team strategies. We watched pretty much all the seasons. We took notes about what to do and what not to do.

What’s next for you two?
M: I graduate [from the University of South Carolina] in December, so I’m looking for jobs now. Everything is kind of hectic. I don’t see myself moving to L.A. or New York. I just want to stay in South Carolina. I’ll move to the beach.
B: I had to quit my job to do the Race. When I got back, I had to look for another one. I’ve not been doing too much since then. I’m back working again, graphic design for a different company, so everything is back to normal. I want to move to New York. I always used to say I wanted to be in front of the camera, but I would love to work behind the scenes in television. Seeing how production works, I really loved it.

Hi Brooke! :dancer:

Are they misquoting you? Or have the two of you confused? Or attributing your comments to Marisa? ???

It must be frustrating!  :groan:  But feel free to make any corrections here, because of course we want to know the real story...not the story they get wrong!  (:;)

But we love y'all anyway! :hearts:

You were the cutest thing ever with that Maori!

They have us backwards a lot...and some of the quotes are wrong, like in the last interview that was posted it had my quote at the end about what I am doing now...but then it kept going and it ended with me saying what Marisa actually had said. In the interviews we would tell them who was talking when...guess they just didn't get that?!

P.S. That Maori warrior was SCARY! He was literally about to bite my hand off...no lie, he would snap at my fingers! haha I was really scared...but was laughing b/c I knew how ridiculous I looked squealing and running around on the side of the mountain looking like Heidi with that hairdo!

Fake Tattoos, No-Show Cops and Phil’s Dad: The Southern Belles On Their Disappointing Elimination From The Amazing Race

Almost every season The Amazing Race casts a team of babes. This year, Marissa and Brooke charmingly filled the role, even though most viewers had difficulty telling them apart. With their Southern politeness and unfailingly positive attitudes, the duo befriended everyone they encountered. Unfortunately, their luck ran out in New Zealand. They told fancast about their one-sided relationship with Dan and Andrew, artificial Maori tattoos and why there’s never a cop around when you need him.

How’d you get so far behind at the beginning?
Brooke: First of all, our seats were at the very, very, very back of the plane. We tried out hardest to get them moved up closer so we could get off sooner but we couldn’t. Then it took a while to get through security in the airport. We got in our car and we started getting really lost from the directions we’d gotten off the internet. So we stopped at a gas station and we thought maybe we could get a cop to come and we’d follow him. We ended up waiting forever for this cop who never showed up. So we decided to get directions from people at the gas station and head on. The whole way to the harbor we got really lost so we got really far behind the other teams getting there.
Marissa: Basically, everything we did there we kind of had a problem with.
Brooke: I think we were just really frustrated.

Almost everyone else had a ton of problems with the kiwi stomping challenge but you seemed to sail through it.
Marissa: That’s the weird thing about it.
Brooke: There was actually a little lever that you had to pull up to let all the juice out. I think a lot of people couldn’t figure out the lever.
Marissa: I heard some people talk about how their machine got clogged so maybe that was the problem but ours went really smoothly once we found the lever and it all started pouring out so we got really lucky.
Brooke: But it was really hard. When we were done our feet were all cut up.

What was the Maori tribesman challenge like?
Marissa: That was scary. I thought he was going to eat me! He was snapping, growling and biting my hands every single time. It was really hard to find that tattoo because all those people were yelling at you and they were starting to sweat the tattoos off their faces because it was so late at that point.

They actually had fake tattoos on their faces?
Brooke: Yeah. They were painted on, but by the end of the day they were smeared off!

Were you aware of all the tensions between the other teams on this leg of the race?
Brooke: We didn’t even know about Nick and Starr and Kelly and Christy until later that night.
Marissa: You hear gossip going on, but we tried to avoid it because we wanted to be friends with everybody.

What moment did you wish made it on to the television show that didn’t?
Brooke: A lot of the extra clips that are on-line are really funny and we wish they’d made it onto television.
Marissa: The clip where we met Dan and Andrew. Everyone was laughing about that.

It seemed like there was a little flirtation, at least in their minds. Was there anything going on there?
Marissa: They thought so! But we were just being friendly because that’s who we are.

Were you willing to use their interest to your strategic advantage?
Marissa: Oh yeah. Whatever helped us. It was weird watching Dan say, ‘We might not be the strongest team but we’re cute.’ That upset us a little. We thought we were competitive. Apparently not.
They were excited about coming in sixth. Maybe their judgment is a little off.
Brooke: We beat them in the third leg.

How did going on the race change your lives?
Marissa: It taught me a lot of new things about Brooke. I became more aware of the world and what’s going on. We got to go to countries we thought we’d never visit. It made me a lot more confident. I feel like I could do anything.
It seemed like the two of you bonded with Phil’s Dad at the elimination mat.
Brooke: He felt so bad for us. It just made us cry even more. He was so sweet and he gave us a hug.

Did you get a sense of their father-son relationship?
Brooke: They seemed really close despite the fact that Phil usually isn’t there with him.
Marissa: Phil’s such a great guy. He’s so funny. He said he felt like he was losing his babies.

What was your favorite experience on the race?
Brooke: Even though we were eliminated in New Zealand, I’m so glad we went there. It’s one of those places you never think you’re going to get to go. I really want to go back now.
Marissa: Even though it wasn’t fun, I’m really glad we had the experience of sleeping in the jungle, so I can tell everyone I slept there. I felt like I was on Survivor.

Would you like to be on Survivor?
Marissa: No. I could never go without you, Brooke.
Brooke: Me, either.

What inspired you to try out for the race?
Brooke: We thought it would be a really great experience. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel the world. The things that we saw were different than what the average tourist would see.
Marissa: And the things we got to do like climbing down the tall building in the cargo net. We did face a lot of fears.

What advice would you give to future contestants?
Brooke: Pack very lightly. Do not get a big backpack.
Marissa: Practice running with your backpack because that’s a lot more difficult than it seems.
Brooke: This might be a little clichéd, but you can’t panic. You’ve got to remain positive in a situation because you’ll just get really flustered. Be nice to everybody or else you’ll get U-turned.

Although nobody used that option.
I think a lot of people were like, ‘we only have one U-turn to use so we’re not going to do it this time. We’re going to wait.’

But it only comes up a couple times in the race. That strategy seems a little silly.
Brooke: Looking back on it, it was. We knew we were ahead of a lot of teams, so that’s why we didn’t do it. We heard a lot of talk about people wanting to U-turn Kelly and Christy. We were like, ‘Someone else will end up doing it, so we don’t really have a reason to.’

Why does everyone dislike Kelly and Christy?
Brooke: It’s really weird to watch that because aside from the race everyone’s friends. They’re very competitive. They didn’t want to make alliances with anybody else. They didn’t work with any other teams. They just stayed to themselves. I think a lot of people didn’t think they were that friendly.

After you were eliminated, who did you root for?
Marissa: Tina and Kenny! They were like our Mommy and Daddy on the show. They’re doing really well. They’ve won three legs in a row.
Brooke: They’re really smart. They work very well together.

If you could undo one decision you made on the race, what would it be?
Marissa: Not going to that Shell station.
Brooke: The worst thing is Toni and Dallas were right there. I wish I’d have stuck my head out the window and asked if we could follow them.

What would you like America to know about you?
Brooke: I’d like to thanks the fans for their positive response. It means a lot when they aren’t just saying, “Oh there are blondes again.”
It does seem like every year the show casts a blonde team.
Marissa: Yeah. And then everyone hates on you because you’re blonde. It’s not our fault!

Kynt and Vyxsin are fancast's celebrity Amazing Race bloggers. They have this question for you: Girls! You were a pleasure to watch! In Episode #2, we noticed you girls amorously eyeing the "hot bods" on the beach in Fortaleza, Brazil. In the midst of the Race's intensity, a little ogling can prove to be quite the stress relief. So we have to know --- which location that you Raced through had the HOTTEST boys and girls?
Marissa and Brooke in unison: New Zealand!!
Brooke: The guy in our hotel was hot.
Marissa: I love their accents. Everyone’s so friendly there. It was right up our alley.

CTV Interview:

'Southern Belles' bomb out of 'The Amazing Race'
Tyrone Warner, CTV.ca

It started with a small problem. Stuck at the back of the plane traveling from Bolivia to New Zealand, best friends Marisa Axelrod and Brooke Jackson fell a bit behind on "The Amazing Race" and couldn't catch up. Then once on the ground, they struggled with driving on the opposite side of the road and got lost on a three-hour drive.

Brooke ultimately blames their loss on help that never came. "We called a cop and he was going to come and get us and guide us -- and he never showed up. We went ahead and left and kept getting lost," Brooke tells CTV.ca. "That's why we came in last -- the challenges weren't that bad."

"The Amazing Race" pits teams of two in a world-wide trek, where the winning pair goes home with a US$1 million prize. Teams must dash through pre-determined "legs," in which they face both physical and mental challenges, with the last place team sent home.

What do you think was your strongest asset on the race?
Brooke: We did a good job working as a team; a lot of the other teams were arguing and bickering. We were just friends with everyone and never argued with each other and it kept us from getting distracted.

What would you have done differently?
I would have packed a much smaller backpack. Our backpacks were huge! I should have packed a lot lighter.

Where on the race did you feel most like a fish out of water?
Definitely Bolivia. It was totally different, and I would have never of imagined going there. The altitude was insane; there was a lot of poverty.

Any place you'd go back for a longer trip?
New Zealand. Even though we had a bad leg, we didn't want to leave. We had such a good time, everyone was so nice and it was gorgeous. I would go back.

What has your response been like from friends and family who are watching you on the race?
Everyone has been excited and can't believe we did everything. They all think that we're these prissy girls -- we are -- but we have a hard side too. When they saw us climbing down cargo nets or sleeping in the jungle, they couldn't believe it.

After being on "The Amazing Race," do you think your relationship with Marisa has grown?
We've certainly developed a bond and more trust in each other, and we figured out things we didn't know before. Marisa is a lot tougher than I thought. I knew she was feisty, but she can rough it out. She didn't care about her hair and make up and I thought we were going to. We even packed a hair straightener!

Did you learn anything about yourself?
I learned that I can do anything if I put my mind to it. If you told me before I was going to do the things I did on the race, I would have said "No way!" When there's a million dollars at stake you'll do anything for it!

Any advice for future racers?
Pack lightly!
