In Almaty:

The State Museum of Popular Musical Instruments

The State Museum of Popular Musical Instruments was created in 1980. It is one of the cultural sights of "The Southern Capital". Kazakh musical instruments have been collected in the Museum from all regions of Kazakhstan as well as from the CIS and other parts of the world.

The collection includes personal dombras of poets, zhyrau and composers, such as: Abai, Zhambyl, Makhambet. Amre, Dina and other figures of the musical arts.
The Museum is located in a traditional Russian wooden building dating 1907.

they visited the Museum of Musical Instruments. The museum is housed in a lovely wooden building designed by the same architect as the wooden cathedral mentioned in an earlier post. Unlike many post-Soviet museums, the facility was in excellent condition and the objects were displayed well. Most objects also featured explanations in Kazakh and Russian that were reasonably detailed. In addition to displaying traditional flutes, drums, and cymbals, the collection had many stringed instruments. One room even featured a sort of dombra Hall of Fame, with famous musicians' photos alongside their instruments

I'm not putting this in spoilers, cos I have been able to find NO collaborating info apart from a  similar post with nothing to back it up at jokersupdates. Do others also believe it's just idle speculation, or is there a very remote possibility that there could be something to it?

There are numerous reports that The Amazing Race is now filming season 13....*snip*....(Reportedly they were seen filming in Kazakhastan recently.)
Let me set the record straight. I was not the first to hypothesize on Kazakhstan being a possibility. However, I have consistently been its champion. Also, I identified Almaty as the most likely city to host a pitstop.

Separately, how do all of those commenting in this thread prior to 5am get the energy? I am still recovering from 6 hours of jet lag, but even so I am never up in the wee hours to do all of what I discovered this morning.

You miss one day, you miss a lot. Promo!  :yess: :yess: :yess:

And in regards to the Coliseum, yes, LA Memorial Coliseum and Coliseum are the same, Peach.

Third straight start in LA.

The Coliseum is only used for USC football (and the S2 season finale of 24, another show I'm obsessed with). Good to use for the start. Plenty of room and a lot of twisty roads to get to LAX.

This may be #9 - 18th century Kazakh warrior

Insert is a clip from the Kazakh movie "Nomad The Warrior".  A film based on some of the history of Kazakhstan in the early 1800's.  Horned helmet is a match.  Other details are consistant with Kazakh warriors of that period.

Regarding the LA Coliseum:  Given Bert's penchant over the seasons to route the Race through Olympic Stadiums and sites, I'm actually surprised it took this long for TPTB to use the Coliseum, which hosted the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for both the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympic Games.

Technical note: Emporis (http://maps.emporis.com/) has made a mashup with Google maps; type in a city and you'll get a map on one side and a list of notable buildings on the other side. A time-saver.
The reason I mention it is because I found it while trying to spot the Instrument museum (http://www.trekearth.com/gallery/Asia/Kazakhstan/photo434094.htm) without much luck; according to this album (http://www.flickr.com/photos/sebast1an/2479187149/sizes/o/) (taken 09 May, Victory Day), it's somewhere near a large square and a soldier's memorial.

The Museum of National Musical Instruments is located on the edge of Panfilov Park, close to Zenkov Cathedral, and is located in the building, called the House of Officers, which in the last century was used by military officers for their meetings.

also: Address: Kazybek bi Street

Did a slightly more detailed comparison between Mystery City and Salvador on Google Earth...

(A) matches up with a patch of green as the Praca Santo Antonio da Barra, and (B), where there is a distinct lack of skyscrapers, sits where a flyover intersection is in Salvador. (C) is a building parallel to the coastline sitting on a vegetated knoll, matching up with the one on Rua do Cristo. And (D), previously identified as Mansao Professor Pedro Calmon, matches up exactly with where it should be in Salvador, along Rua Sabino Silva.

Now we do.  The museum title only coughed up a few hits, but "panfilov museum" took me straight here (http://www.scaruffi.com/monument/kazak/kazak.html) (Thanks, Peach and Boingo). Like Frysinger's page, this fellow Scaruffi has an interesting collection of world photos (and music history, philosophy, etc.).
Now to find Magic Helmet. If it's an ad hoc thing, we're out of luck until more info rolls in. I've searched for cultural parks/outdoor museums that might match, but no luck.

This is interesting.  The promo shows many locations, all but one have been visited by one or more TARs.  FIJI is new.  So does this suggest that TAR13 actually goes to Fiji?  It could be a logical stop between Chile and New Zealand.  Or more likely between NZ and Cambodia.  This could account for a missing day.

as usual, you guys are amazing, ripping apart a 30sec (or so) promo to find all this info!
i have been trying to catch up on all the postings, but have a couple questions that maybe someone can answer:
why did the fiji thing come up, was it in the promo? does seem extremely unlikely timewise.
and why astana instead of almaty, given that the photos are of almaty? just bvm's "capital" remark? or ease of flights?
