Title: Maps, Maps, and more Maps!
Post by: georgiapeach on May 17, 2008, 10:26:41 PM
:welcome3: to the MAPS for TAR 13!

I'll be depending on everyone's help to make this a success, so please remember the Maps! as you research the race.

If you have a map for any leg of the race that you think is great or have found useful--PLEASE add it here or let me know by PM and I will add it right into the correct spot so we can all use it!  VR /Interactive links are appreciated too!  I'm really happy to be the librarian here but would like this to be a team effort--so please--send lots!

Thanks everybody!  :hugs:

Quote from Sunnyca!
Most of the action seems to take place on the left (western) side of this map. The building that Boingo identifed seems to be the Oblast Akimat Building in the Old Square on Tolebi St whereas the former Parliament building aka Akimat House is on Republic square on Satpaev St.

Here's another good map http://kazakhstan.orexca.com/img/map_almaty1.jpg

(unfortunately upside down from the last one, ie S up!) with the buildings marked. In this map the mosque is now on the top left corner, with the Green Bazar and cathedral below it, continuing into Dostyk Ave where the restaurant Alasha is (also ID ed by Biongo, off the map where it crosses the river, link here http://www.alasha.kz ).

Panorama of the restaurant  (http://www.alasha.kz/index.php?opt=panorama&lang=rus&vid=hall)
According to the map on the Alasha site, (http://www.alasha.kz/images/contact4eng.gif)http://www.alasha.kz/index.php?opt=contact
it's at the corner of Ospanov and Dostyk, right before where Dostyk crosses the river.
On this map (mostly in Russian http://infokz.com/city/eng/empall.htm) you can see Dostyk Av (in Russian looks like AOcTblk!) crossing the river at the top right side, with a street leading off it, which might be Ospanov (not marked).  Downtown is to the left with the Cathedral, Green Bazar  and park at the left end of Dostyk.

Chickens:
If it helps with the searches, the rough address of the chicken farm is:

Первомайская Промзона (1st of May Street?)
Илийский район (Iliiskii district)

It's bringing up other businesses in the vicinity, but no location yet... :'(

I was looking for chickens and I got Migs
Maybe I can help (a little) with both. This page (http://infokz.com/base/eng/view.php?id=4927&p=0) describes the Alel location as
Quote
Almaty region, Iliiskii district, Pervomaiskaya Promzona, Almaty ptitsefabrika
. I found this company (http://www.burundaiavia.kz/?lan=en&id=93) that claims an airport in the same district. The wikimap is here (http://www.wikimapia.org/1912149/Burundai-Airport). There's an industrial area north of the airport that has possibilites; if someone could find Pervomaiskaya village that would help in finding the battery farm ("ptitsefabrika").

Nvm, it's here (http://travelingluck.com/Asia/Kazakhstan/Almaty/_1520208_Pervomayskiy.html#local_map). Now to look for chickens...

Falcons:
This page (http://kazakhstan.orexca.com/eagle_hunting_kazakhstan.shtml) states the Sunkar falcon farm is in the Alma-Arasan gorge south of the city; after doing a little translating ("Kennel hunting birds and dogs"), I'll make a guess and say it's here (http://www.wikimapia.org/3119658/ru/%D0%9F%D0%B8%D1%82%D0%BE%D0%BC%D0%BD%D0%B8%D0%BA).

Here's something that can go in the Final City info:

Anthony Bourdain went to the Pacific Northwest years ago to do a show; almost half of that show was Portland OR. Most of what he presented on the show was of no interest to the episode 11 finale, but one item struck me as something the AR13 tasks in Portland could have included. This is Underground Portland, which was shown in Bourdain's video as a series of tunnels under Portland leading to the waterfront from which individuals who were Shaghai'ed could be secretly sent on board ships. Here is the list of what is included in teh Walking Tour of Underground Portland:

The last remains of the hundreds of cast-iron buildings that once graced this city until they were ripped out to build a highway.
Locations of the Simpsons-Portland connections, including the polluted river where the Simpsons TV show originated Blinky the Three-Eyed Fish
A 24 hour doughnut shop and wedding chapel
A journey into the bowels of the city to view entrances that once led to the legendary “Shanghai Tunnels” and understand the facts from below the floorboards of neighborhood landmark Old Town Pizza
Obscure shops selling Chinese medicines and herbs that even today face hassles from the government and from skeptics
The site of a famous riot instigator called the "the most arrested man in the Northwest"
Storied sites and buildings, once host to illicit deals and doings, that survived countless floods and remain today as some of our treasured restaurants, clubs, bars and office spaces
The somber monuments and plaza remembering local and nationwide efforts to isolate and evict more than 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II

Peach, here's some information on Mt. Maunganui, which is a grand 250 meters high:

Mt Maunganui
Beach settlement, part of Tauranga city, on the sandy expanse between Tauranga Harbour and the Pacific Ocean. It was named after the mountain (252 m) at the harbour entrance.

This may have been the site for AR13 teams to do tasks on May 2. It is about 125 miles from Auckland, so it would involve a lot of road travel to get there and back, probably at least 5 hours round-trip.

Title: Re: Maps, Maps, and more Maps!
Post by: apskip on May 22, 2008, 12:32:56 PM
Peach, another possibility for where AR13 teams were on May 2 is Mangere Mountain, near Auckland International
Airport:

On Mangere Mountain, just minutes from Auckland International Airport, you can see the remains of what was once an extremely large eighteenth century Maori fortified settlement, or pa. Low stone walls radiate out from the base of the mountain, the remnants of the major Maori land boundaries that once divided the landscape into large pie-shaped pieces.

These boundaries marked out gardens, houses and other living areas. There are scores of house and garden terraces, walled garden mounds, stone boundary walls and kumara storage pits around the crater.

A series of cast iron and basalt sculptures placed around the mountain show what life was like there, including what foods were eaten and how they were cultivated, caught and stored.  A one hour 'land marker' walk follows the sculptures (see the self-guided walk brochures below).

Four large paintings by local artist Chris Gaskin, which are sited near the education centre at the base of Mangere Mountain, also depict life there, from the time of the last eruption 40,000 years ago, through 500 years of continuous Maori settlement, to the pastoral farms of European settlers.

Technical note (I don't know where else it would go, Peach can erase it if she wants):
Google Earth 4.3 is out, with some improvements including a shadow-maker and some better (IMO) navigation controls. And the fog has lifted in many places of the world  :spy:: you can see the maritime terminal at Salvador and some might remember the time we spent looking for the statue at Batu Caves.

Cool, I had seen that the fog had lifted in Salvador but I forgot to check Batu.

I don't know how useful the shadow thing is.  So far, to me, it just seems like a big dimmer switch controlled by Lat & Long.

I have a new trick up my sleeve for high accuracy sun-shadow timing.  It's labor intensive but it will allow time estimates to be made with shots I would have previously left alone.  I hope to get it streamlined down a little before the show starts.

Re: TAR13 timeline speculation
« Reply #124 on: August 01, 2008, 12:33:38 PM »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do the distances on the route so far add up to ~40000 miles? If it's even close, then Africa would be out - it'd be a big shlep from anywhere along the current route (i guess it would be delhi/dubai if anything). I'm inclined to agree that NZ is the "fifth continent"!!

i brought this over from the tar13 timeline spec thread.. even though i absolutely believe y'all about not trusting BVM's geographic accuracy, i wanted to find a quick way to estimate distances from Google Maps and I found a nice little tool at Wisgary.com
http://www.wisgary.com/maps/
this is great - you just click on any 2 points and hit calculate distance. you can move around one of the markers and it updates.
Using this I estimated the current distance travelled as per TAR13 specs to be about 38500 miles, so not too far off the 40K quoted, esp if you include one more destination after delhi/dubai (kazakhstan? any others?).  anywhere in africa other than egypt would be a lot more than this  :badhorse:  :groan:   just for fun i did TAR12 route and got 28600 miles, not too far from the 30K quoted!
for more accurate distance calcs i like http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/distance.html
i'm sure resident cartographers here like apskip know these sites.  how about a real fun geography one - i can spend hours on this - it's a blast!!! http://www.news.com.au/perthnow/index/1,21581,5015022,00.html

Getting close! Leaving out the two/three legs between Delhi and Moscow we're at 36402 miles, which leaves a swathe through Central Asia, the northeastern coast of Africa and Europe if 40000 miles holds.

I'm hoping for something closer to 70,000 miles and six continents again. But I'm glad it's finally getting longer instead of shorter.

Season 12 just had a pathetic route and reducing the number of legs didn't help.

Hooky, Maybe I have missed something about 6 Continents, but how did you conclude that for AR13? I don't know of anything that definitely says that and I consider inclusion of Africa in AR13 unlikely.

  Stumbled accross this FREE flight logging/mapping tool called FlightMemory (http://www.flightmemory.com/)

Flight Memory enables you to easily keep track of where you have flown and then easily produce maps showing your flight routes.  We'll also tell you your total time in the air, distance flown .....   blahblah

Just sign up (no e-mail required) and use the FREE service.  Avoid the poster stuff.  Generate your own "Neobie" TAR route maps.   :yess:

I don't know. To me it makes sense that all those islands must be part of some continent. I grew up learning that Australia, Papua New Guinea, and all the islands in that general area are part of the same continent. Just like Madagascar and Mauritius are part of Africa.

But Season 13 is 5 continents, in case you thought I posted 6. And I've just never questioned that NZ is part of the Australia/Oceania continent.

If those aren't the issues, I'm not sure what you mean. :duno:

Not maps exactly, but Peach accepts VRs, and these websites keep getting better. Tour Virtual Brazil (http://www.tourvirtualbrasil.com.br/Destinos/tabid/68/modId/680/LCPage/1/eType/ALL/LCTag/ALL/language/en-US/Default.aspx) has portals for both Salvador and Fortaleza; the taskbar on top includes a dropdown box (click to see different places around town), a Googlemaps plugin, even music. Quicktime needed, broadband recommended.

GM and GE should be good enough for NZ. If you want specialized search, you could try Smaps (http://www.smaps.co.nz/) or YellowMaps (http://maps.yellowpages.co.nz/clients/places.cgi?client=yellnzyp) or Zoomin (http://www.zoomin.co.nz/) (the last supports photos and tags).

It should still be on the right side if you mouse-over it; some description here (http://earth.google.com/userguide/v4/tutorials/navigating.html#tilting_nav_controls). I prefer just using the zoom, once you get near the subject GE automatically tilts. Below is the oblique (such as it is) of the giant kiwifruit with the helipad just in front of it.

I am trying to snag the MAPS you all have shared in the threads and embed them here, and am hopefully nearly up to date (except for poor Kazakhstan )!  I know, I know, I am a little slow right now....

So please, if you have shared a map in the threads and have your link somewhere and see that I have missed it, PLEASE add it here or PM me so I can add it in! I REALLY don't want to miss any goodies and I especially do NOT want us to lose any attached and not embedded MAPS! in one of the intermittent purges.  :ascared

Please also let me know anytime if you have better ones or new discoveries! :jumpy:  Peachy the librarian would love to add them to the pile!

The cattle belong to Loren Poole, who owns a property just outside Te Puke. On his farm he grows all the ingredients for a great dinner party. Prime beef, kiwi fruit and flowers. Most of his flowers end up in Japanese floral arrangements but his kiwi fruit are exported around the world.

Loren Poole feeds his reject kiwi fruit to his cows. "It's good for their coats," he tells me as a large steer snatches a snack out of his hand.

I've come across that name as well; here's an entry (http://www.abc.net.au/correspondents/content/2008/s2301953.htm) describing his farm as "about half an hour's drive from Te Puke." For being the go-to guy for foreign journalists he certainly keeps a low profile: no web presence and no listing in the white pages (although most people around there give their farm names--e.g. Summerhill). I tried matching the logo, but no luck.

Here is an excellent map of downtown Almaty (the link on Page 1 doesn't work for this leg!)
Almaty downtown http://infokz.com/city/eng/empcen.htm
Most of the action seems to take place on the left (western) side of this map. The building that Boingo identifed seems to be the Oblast Akimat Building in the Old Square on Tolebi St whereas the former Parliament building aka Akimat House is on Republic square on Satpaev St. Here's another good map http://kazakhstan.orexca.com/img/map_almaty1.jpg (unfortunately upside down from the last one, ie S up!) with the buildings marked. In this map the mosque is now on the top left corner, with the Green Bazar and cathedral below it, continuing into Dostyk Ave where the restaurant Alasha is (also ID ed by Biongo, off the map where it crosses the river, link here http://www.alasha.kz ).

(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/rawalsh/th_map_almaty1.jpg) (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/rawalsh/map_almaty1.jpg) fixed
