CBS Doubles Up on ‘Race’
By Josef Adalian

The CBS 2008-09 schedule just got a little more “Amazing.”

The network has decided to double its order of the Emmy-winning reality show for next season. While one edition had already been greenlit, CBS told producers on Tuesday that it was ordering a second edition of the show.

That sets the stage for two installments of “Race” to air next season.

CBS isn’t commenting on its scheduling plans, but based on the network’s past actions, it probably will air one edition of the show in the fall and another next spring.

Despite the Writers Guild of America strike, CBS aired just one installment of “Race” during the current season. That edition ran from November through January.

The two-season order for “Race” covers the show’s 13th and 14th cycles.

Bertram Van Munster, Jerry Bruckheimer and Jonathan Littman are the executive producers of “Race,” while Elise Doganieri co-created the show with Van Munster and serves as co-exec producer.

I found this sometime ago, something TAR 14 related and some Elise news that wowed me ~

June 23, 2008

The top half of Friday was spent at the offices -- located strategically close to LAX -- of Bertram Van Munster and Elise Doganieri, the married creators and producers of CBS' "The Amazing Race."

Currently, they've got the 13th cycle in post-production and are in pre-planning on the 14th. They're also in production on two fronts, as Doganieri is, let's see, 11, 10, 9...8 days away from the due date on her daughter.

As, I was told, the first reporter allowed into the inner confines of "Race" HQ, I'll save most of the deets for my upcoming story, but I can say that the visit was informative and charming, the cuppa coffee was quite good, and there was a very large moose.

Van Munster and Doganieri rank among the smartest and nicest folks I've met in the TV biz, and they're ferociously competent. Just imagine what it takes to send teams of contestants, trailed by cameramen and producers, along with support staff, on a breakneck journey around the world.

One thing's for sure, the next time I travel internationally, these are the folks I'd want telling me what to pack and what not to eat.

Oh My Goodness!

Based on that count, it is entirely possible that Bertram and Elise could have already welcomed their new little one into the world!

I heard a rumor that the 1st continent to be start on the race will be in Asia just like what it did on Season 10, and the producers of this show had started to research it for the upcoming Season 14.

I wish they could visit to my country, the Philippines, again just like what they'd did on Season 5 and if lucky, I could get some pictures for an evidence and post it and make a story here.

Right on, topaz. There are actually about 250 countries not visited by the Amazing Race yet, some of them with high risk factors that rule them out for now (such as Iraq). Your list is a good starting point. There are a number of countries in Africa and many other islands that could be on such a list. The absolute top of my list right now is Finland.

There's still a lot they could do in Paris. They've only been there twice; once was monument hunting (TAR 1) and the other was artistic stuff (TAR 10). There's still gastronomy, business, more art, sports, etc.

Brunei is definitely on my list, as is Belize.

Has the race started yet? I have heard that someone saw a bunch of western people rush in a subway station in China yesterday, there is a slim chance it might be racers of TAR14. :wohoo:

Why not? TAR14 could start anytime in October or November, including two days ago. kaad, please find out what you can. It is not probable but it is possible that the first leg went to China. Where are we talking about? Beijing? Shanghai? Guangzhou? Xian?

Excellent point Michael!!

From the Bonnie Hunt Show facts:
Quote
Who are the guests on the show and when will the show air? These details change periodically. In general, the taping you attend will air the following day. We do not formally release any of this information until the day of your show.

So chances are good the show will be taped on Thursday...

While we are on the topic of TAR 14, anyone heard when the applications for TAR 15 will be online? It's should be about time and my brother has finally agreed to sign up with me. I am ready to go.

scuzneck, the show has not been officially renewed for TAR 15 yet. But if/when there is a TAR 15, best of luck!  :hearts:

Probably. I mean, we could never be sure. It could be a mix of the US, Asia, Brazil & Israel version for all we know. PS: I think it's just tourists. Because if it was for any TAR edition, he should've mentioned cameras and such.

Hi guys,
After lurking around for over a year I decided to post. TAR has not been to Mexico since TAR2 or 3 and it was only once on the route Mexico City-Tequesquitengo-Cancun. I remember them skydiving in Tequesquitengo.

I hope that since it all seems that TAR14 will begin in Asia, why not have it come to Mexico for the last leg before the finish line in the USA?

Mexico has over 30 airports with international service to the US and at least 4 intercontinental gateways: Tijuana (Beijing and Tokyo), Monterrey (Rome and Madrid), Cancun (All of Europe, the Caribbean, Central and South America) and Mexico City (Infinite possibilities).

I'm just dying to see it come back. Any underground news?

Wow RFF is already gearing up for TAR14! I'm always ready for The Amazing Race.

I had this Idea not to long ago, let me know what you think!

Because The Amazing Race 14 has already been casted I thought of an Idea for TAR 15. What if it had One adult (21+) and One teenager (15+) would that not be interesting to watch?!!?!?!?! I would for sure be the first one to apply! Think of it, because TAR: Family Edition ended up a total mess with the chaos of 4 people per team, the production could manage the teams, there would be teenage drama, and it would just be really interesting to watch! Whatcha think RFF?

Kevin,

I would say OK if there was evidence that teens are better at reading clues than adults. Sadly, real standards for reading have declined over most of the past 40 years. That is the result of too much television and video games and not enough reading books. I am guilty of that too(although not the video games part but my son more than takes my share). Another factor is that watching teens and adults interact is usually not one of life's pleasures.

I can appreciate that you may be a teen and want to find a way to get on the show. If so, I doubt that World Race Productions is going to change their rules to accommodate teenagers. I hope they don't.

I understand where you are coming from askip, but you have to think of it from the producers POV. I mean lack of reading skills doesn't really matter. hell half the teams suck as much as teenagers would! so sorry but you're going to have to give me some more convincing evidence.

Title: Start date speculation...
Post by: walkingpneumonia on October 17, 2008, 03:19:14 PM
I was trying to predict when they might start TAR 14 by analyzing past dates...
The most frequent day to start a race is Saturday and the most frequent end day is Sunday. I would have thought they would avoid the race running over Thanksgiving so they don't have to pay extra time to the US crews for working on a holiday - but it doesn't seem like thats been a factor in previous years.
I was also trying to figure out any other significant world holidays in late October and November that might affect the race.
If it was me - I'd start the race on Saturday November 8 - end on Tuesday Dec 2 - 24 days - just a guess.

Race   Start Date      End Date   Dur.   Holidays
TAR 14                  Election Day Tues. Nov 4, Thanksgiving Thurs. Nov 27, Hajj Dec. 6 - 11

Nice analysis, walkingpneumonia.

The tendency to favor Saturday outgoing and Sunday incoming has two very good reasons behind it:

1. There is much lower chance of outsiders inadvertently viewing parts of the first or last leg on a weekend.

2. The traffic on weekends is much lighter than any weekdays. This allows the use of close-to-center-city-of-Major-metropolitan-area locations.

Today was an exciting day...
On the way down to the DMV for my permit test I drove past a truck filled with logs. It was stopped on the side of the road and two men got out. one had something yellow and blue in his hand. then as we drove a little ferther we saw that there was a massive camera looking thing in the cab of the truck. and then i noticed somthing red/yellow hanging from the rearview mirror. It was to weird and I wondered why they would be were I like and Why in America? So idk if it was TAR. but yeah...

yup that goddamn election or even halloween for delaying the race on upcoming TAR 14 :snicker:

Anyway, here's I would like to share to you and it'll be my peculiar experience.  Last night I had a dream that the starting city for TAR 14 will be in San Francisco and the new 11 teams will go to Tokyo, Japan as their 1st leg of the race, then after that the remaining legs of the race they went down south on to Australia and Tahiti and encircling up to Latin America as the final part of the race for TAR 14.  And the last country will be racing for TAR 14 is in Mexico before heading towards to the finish line in San Diego, CA.  Hey, that will be nice if that will be their path for the race on TAR 14, isn't it? :hearts:

take note, this is not a spoiler and a speculation for tar14 yet.

E.S. Anchors To Embark On "Amazing" Trip

NEW YORK, Oct. 29, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(CBS) You could say that "The Amazing Race" host Phil Koeghan can keep a secret -- no matter how juicy or interesting.

And this time around he has a big one involving The Early Show anchors.

Koeghan, who was in Los Angeles, is about to start shooting the next "Amazing Race" and he is keeping mum on all of the juicy details.

Although he couldn't dish much on where exactly he is headed on his next adventure, he isn't hiding his excitement for what's to come.

"It's incredible. It's amazing, quite frankly. We'll be heading out for the 14th time to go around the world. We keep having this opportunity and for me, it's the best job I've ever had and I love it and thankfully the viewers love it and it's always nice to be employed and when you get employed and you get to go around the world and shoot great adventures with people and with an audience, there's nothing more exciting than that," he told Early Show co-anchors Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez, Julie Chen (via phone) and Early Show news anchor Russ Mitchell.

"The Amazing Race" will be starting in the United States, as it always is, but Koeghan admitted that the real reason he was there was to talk to the Early Show anchors about "Destination Unknown."

"You guys are going to have no idea where you're going, what you're going to be doing. You're going to be on your own "Amazing Race," Koeghan explained.

Although Keoghan won't be at every destination the Early Show anchors go, he will be giving them the clues.

"You'll find out where you're going and get your clues and you'll have absolutely no idea where you're going. And the next time that the viewers hear from you, you will be in a far-away land, and trust me when I say to you, it will be far away," Koeghan said.

"You will be jet lagged, exhausted, I might have you running through the airport with some heavy bags -- just exhaust you even more. We'll give all of the heavy bags to Dave Price," Koeghan joked. "Then you will be somewhere in the world and you will be doing things unknown at this point," he said.

"You're killing us," Rodriguez said.

"Can we win $1 million if we get there fast?" Chen asked.

"That's a conversation you might want to have with your husband," Koeghan replied.

"It would be 'no,'" Chen said.

"At this point, it's 'Destination Unknown,' prize unknown and money unknown. But I can promise you this, that where you're going, it will be tremendously exciting," Koeghan said. "You might want to bring an array of clothing. In fact, you will not even know what you need because you will not know what you're doing!"

The Early Show anchors will meet people along the way, but they will take their own individual trips and they may need some shots.

All of the information will be revealed when the Early Show anchors go to "Destination Unknown."

"He said we're going to be disoriented and confused and that's not much different than any other day," Smith said with a laugh.

"Destination Unknown" starts next week on "The Early Show."

"The Amazing Race" airs on Sundays at 8 p.m. ET, on CBS.

The Amazing Race 14
Amazing Race 14 starts taping soon

The Amazing Race 14 will begin production late this week or this weekend.
Host Phil Keoghan confirmed that on The Early Show, saying, “It’s incredible. It’s amazing, quite frankly. We’ll be heading out for the 14th time to go around the world. We keep having this opportunity and for me, it’s the best job I’ve ever had and I love it and thankfully the viewers love it and it’s always nice to be employed and when you get employed and you get to go around the world and shoot great adventures with people and with an audience, there’s nothing more exciting than that.”
Once again, the show will leave from Los Angeles, making the new season blend into other seasons before it even begins, which is the one thing the series doesn’t need considering how rapidly it’s aging.

Chen said she secretly yearned to go to Paris, a city she loves. She recently mapped out an itinerary of places to eat and visit for a friend visiting the city. But it barely qualifies as a working vacation: she has to do a couple of stories while there and has time for dinner before coming home Saturday morning.

Hey for all we know they could have just told us that they were starting in LA so all the media would be in one particular place giving them time to start in a less remote location. I really wish they wouldn't keep starting in L.A. and I'm confused cause in the video interview he specifically did not say were they were starting, so I no offense but i doubt that the last line is truthfull.

Just wanted to say I'm more than impressed how you guys managed to cover the entire race! Wow!! I'd love to try to somehow help with the upcoming 14th season... It's been a couple of seasons since they've been around "my" countries... you never know. ;)

Now I'm not sure where to post this? Maybe it deserves its own thread?
For "The Early Show's" Destination Unknown, Julie Chen is surprised with a trip to Paris as she is whisked on a plane to The Grand Hotel, across the street from the Opera Garnier.

so, their 1st leg will be in PARIS?!? :duno:

That will be great, if the speculation is true.  And if they really went there, I hope the next leg they should visit is either to Monaco, Belgium or Switzerland and travel it via the Eurorail [as the cheap and faster way to get there] after the Paris leg.

but I heard some news right now that there's a snow storm that are now affecting in some parts of Europe and it might affect the race there.  I hope it won't be worse. :crown

NO Topaz, lol!

This is an Early Show segment--all Phil does is send them on their way--it does NOT mean anything for TAR14, lol....

(at least as far as we know! )

Hi Guys, I Read It In The Amazing Race Wiki: I live in Ticino, the southern part of Switzerland. Today I saw two separate groups of two people with backpacks running around town, followed by a cameraman and a 4th person. I noticed they were speaking American English.

This was especially strange because I normally hear American-accented English perhaps once or twice a month, even though this place is pretty touristy. Additionally, I saw these Americans talking to a PRIEST outside of church and being filmed doing so. Seriously, what tourists talk to a priest (on camera)?  :yess:

So... One Of The Destinations Is Locarno, Switzerland.

For those who haven't had the plesaure of going there, Locarno is at the northern end of Lake Maggiore. It is approximately a 2 hour, bus or train drive from Milan. Flights would probably be via Milan. Both Zurich and Geneva are much farther away.

This Early Show thing is a major rip off of the Today show's Where in the World is Matt Lauer, but with Phil giving clues. I wish there was a way to throw Julie off that balcony.

First of all, Michael, when was the last time you were ever in Locarno? What you hear is frequently not accurate. Not only have I been there, but there is also this public information:

Quote
The easiest way is direct from Milan’s Malpensa airport, around an hour and a half’s car drive. There is also a shuttle bus from Malpensa airport, leaving about every two hours from just outside the station (exit door 4, stand 21 - see links panel) as far as Bellinzona, from which you can catch a twice-hourly - and highly scenic - rail shuttle to Locarno. Alternatively, if combining Locarno with Milan, there is a train, usually every hour, connecting Milan Central with Bellinzona, with a simple transfer there onto the Locarno shuttle. Both the rail and airport bus routes pass through Lugano.
There is another airport, Turin, which is about one hour further from Locarno than Millan - Malpense.

I know you like to jab me, but at least try and validate your information when you do!

To get to Locarno you have to travel for four hours by bus from Milan.

see?  It's validated.

It looks to me that we have SAN MXP (San Diego to Milan-Malpensa) for arting point and arrival airport. Here are some flight possiblities for leg 1 of AR14:

SAN ORD AA1438 0935 1535
ORD MXP AP021 1655 0835+1

SAN JFK AA160 0815 1620
JFK MXP AA198 1735 0755+1

SAN ATL DL12 0850 1601
ATL MXP DL74 1710 0830

My guess is that at least 2 of these were used. Taking these flights necessitates a very early start to AR14. It would have to be much earlier than on any Amazing RAce I can remember.

Here's hoping the race does NOT start in LA, and hopefully never ever again (I know that's unlikely). For a show that is about locations, a variety of starting points would be nice.
