Burkina Faso, West Africa  July 13th
plurie (http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=2666383&view=findpost&p=8353800) @ Twop's post's on July 16th:
*A friend of a coworker was recently on a flight to Burkina Faso with contestants and camera crews who claimed to be filming TAR. (He'd never seen the show, so he didn't know to ask any other questions.)
*According to my coworker, the contestants and camera crews were initially coy about what program they were working on, but eventually some of the contestants said it was TAR.

This blog  (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,12521.msg233588.html#msg233588) entry confirms Paris to Burkina Faso on July 13th
*We are happy to report that we and the Johnsons made it to Burkina Faso at around 5pm local time on Friday (1PM on the east coast).
*We arrived safely in Burkina Faso on July 13th
*Our biggest news of interest is that it appears that the Amazing Race teams and crew were on our plane from Paris to Burkina.
*We have no clue what they could find interesting to do in Burkina but we noticed the flight was very full and it turns out that there were 40-50 people on the plane associated with the production.
*We were sitting in Paris waiting to board and we kept seeing guys with really big video cameras, running up and then turning around to get video of two people coming towards them.
*We talked with a couple of people who said that they couldn’t say who they were with but they didn’t deny it either.
There is a chance that we are in the background of several shots at the Paris airport or on the plane.
Also, the SIM missionary from Ouaga who met us at the airport was definitely on camera giving directions to a team (Tim? & Don) who we had met and helped on the plane.
*Anyway,  I think they are shooting for the fall or the spring and they said that they were in the middle of the race.
*There was at least one team that was “goth.” They had either dyed their hair pink or were wearing a wig.
*Several of the teams were not quite dressed appropriately to handle the heat or the cultural requirements, so it will be interesting to see what they do (there was a goth team (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b105/rawalsh/TAR12/misc/25Sep0010.jpg) and the guy was wearing white face paint!).
*there were the girls who were wearing tight warm-up pants…very shocking to the conservative Burkinabe culture where women wear skirts and dresses that go below the knee in public.
*One of the contestants and his father were from Chicago and they sat across the aisle from us, so we got to talk to them a little bit

Slowhatch: This page (http://www.uiowa.edu/~africart/Art%20of%20Burkina%20Faso.html#Bwamasks) will tell you more than you ever wanted to know about Burkinabe mask culture.  The cap looks like southwestern/Ouaga style (maybe) of an antelope (maybe).

PLEASE LORD, GIVE ME MILK!
*The severe pain of a hernia attacks one Racer at the worst time as one of the older men on the Race falls under the spell of two young, feisty, hip-shaking female Racers.

tight warm up pants team for the f3 with goths and Rachel and TK .... not going to happen most likely but oh well.

Knowing CBS we'll probably get a shot of Kate and Pat eliminated before tomorrow night at 8.

Tuaregs are found in Burkina Faso too though so who knows? Esp if we are going way to the SW. It could be a TBC for sure though.

I'm still not 100% on the 2 African legs but we need to consider it for sure. Ghana maybe?

Okay--way back in Intro vidcaps Slowhatch gave us this  LINK (http://burkinamorbihan.free.fr/) to the Rural solidarity Burkina-Faso Morbihan.

If you switch to English and the follow the trail to the organization (http://burkinamorbihan.free.fr/index_en.htm#presse), you find that this group has poultry farming.

Quote
Poultry farming has been in place in the missions since December 2002 and April 2003 with the managers of the Producers' Union, Mr. Yaro, and DPRA (provincial direction for animal resources):

Organization of a veterinary pharmacy.
Training on farming (buildings, alimentation, etc.) and health (disinfection, vaccinations, etc.).
These aspects are interesting for most of the families involved in poultry farming (chickens, ducks, guinea-fowl). The discussion is done in exchange groups where everyone shares failures, successes, and improves the organization to distribute vaccinations.

So I am wondering if they could actually go here either this episode or next?

It is located in the Morbihan province in the SE which would be  not too distant from Dourtenga and so might have similar mud huts.

Organization in Morbihan
Born from the inspiration of several people of the rural region around Questembert and La Gacilly, Solidarité Rurale Burkina-Faso Morbihan has become an association at the department level.

Anyway--maybe something to look at?

Lorena & Joson get eliminated as they were not spotted in Croatia.

Why in ep 3?  From here we have a stop perhaps in Niger, Vilnius, and Florence before Dubrovnik.  Jason and Lorena could be Philiminated in any one of these stops.

I want to offer up a view of what might be happening in the early stages of Burkina Faso. I think that teams arrive at the Ouagadougou airport and then go to get a clue at the NaBa Koom statue at the railway station. I believe the clue directs them to vans or possibly self-drive cars to take them southeast to Dourtenga or maybe even further. All the screencaps we have been getting are for highly rural enviroments, so the probability is that teams are going away from Ouagadougou after the briefest of time there. With the time of arrival being 740pm at the airport, it will be after dark before teams arrive wherever they are going. All the major activities will take place on July 14 (coincidentally Bastille Day is France and maybe celebrated in some way in Burkina Faso).

Concern has been expressed by Peach to me by PM about the rainy season in Burkina Faso and whether road trips from Ouagadougou to somewhere in the southeast and on to Niamey Niger would be feasible. I have found data on the rainy season(June to September, which is certainly when the Amazing Race is there) for the south of Burkina Faso. Total annual rainfall concentrated in those 4 months is 40 inches (about what we get in the new York metropolitan area in a year. The average per day is 0.33 inches. As long as they don't get 5 inches all at once, it may not be a problem. If it were, then an option is for World Race Productions to have teams return back to Ouagadougou and take charter flights the 300 miles from there to Niamey.

Thanks apskip, i was wondering if that scene in the dark was perhaps not the pitstop, rather the teams arriving or waiting for something doing the happy dance--
Lorena has long sleeves on then changes to short sleeves at the RB and later Jason has put a coat on and then Lorena's bandanna has disappeared " BABBYYYYYYYYYYYYYY......." . A promo would be sweet and so we wait  :(

Now stop about mushpants you guys ! s/he was pedaling the short bike in the back of the pack and couldn't keep up -- sorry mushpants, you have been philiminated :pedaler:

Here's another gem from my collection of little-known geographic facts:

If teams go east on the main road from Koupela in Kourtenga province to Fada N'Gourma in Gourma province, they will be crossing the Prime Meridian(the one that runs through the Greenwich Observatory in London). Ouagadougou is 2 degrees west and Niamey is 2 degrees east.

Things look pretty damn hot and dry when we see them chasing camels.  Who would want to spend any length of time in Ouagadougou?

I agree G-Man that it does look dry. But this was less thn 2 weeks before the worst flood in BF history which left 96,000 homeless. All of the blogs I have read have talked about how the roads become impassable during the rainy season, so my point was --would TPTB schedule a drive during the rainy season when they could not be sure teams would not get "bogged down"? It also appears to be unsafe to drive at night so am doubting a late night drive as a start. Remember only a few teams were commented on on the CDG to Ouagadougou flight? Were the others on that flight--and if not which?

Here is some other info on transport in BF: (But the good news? National drinks:
• Beer is the drink of choice and is fairly cheap.)

Main Airports
Ouagadougou (OUA) is 8km (5 miles) from the city. To /from the airport: Taxi and bus services are available to the city. Facilities: Banks, post office, shops, restaurants and car hire.

Borgo, 16km (10 miles) from Bobo Dioulasso, handles mainly domestic flights (see Getting Around).

Getting There by Rail
The only route is the international line from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, running through to Ouagadougou. However, passenger services are currently suspended.

Getting There by Road
Routes are from Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger and Togo, although these are often barely adequate. Regular bus services run during the dry season, from Bobo to Bamako in Mali, and from Ouagadougou to Niamey in Niger and to Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire. The road from Ghana is being improved. Bush taxis also serve most routes.

Note: Permission from the Ministry of Administration is required for the use of photo-, film- or video cameras.

Internal Travel:

Getting Around By Air
Borgo, 16km (10 miles) from Bobo Dioulasso, is the principal domestic airport. Air Burkina (website: www.air-burkina.com) runs flights between Bobo Dioulasso and Ouagadougou. Air taxis are available.
Getting Around by Rail
There is a limited daily service from Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso. Two classes are available, but can become overcrowded.

Getting Around by Road
Traffic drives on the right. The majority of roads are unpaved. In general, roads are impassable during the rainy season (July to October). It is inadvisable to drive at night, as there are few street lights and some vehicles do not have headlights.

Bus: Buses and vans are called cars in Burkina Faso. Regular bus services are operated in the dry season to all major towns and it is necessary to book at least 48 hours in advance. These buses are also cheap and plentiful.

Taxi: Shared taxis are available in major centers; fares are negotiable.

Car hire: Available from hotels in Ouagadougou. Car hire is still a recent phenomenon in Burkina Faso, and vehicles may be in poor condition. Visitors are therefore advised to lease cars for a day or two before committing themselves to a longer contract. Chauffeur-driven cars are also available.
Documentation: A temporary license to drive is available from local authorities on presentation of a valid national driving license, but an International Driving Permit is recommended.

There continue to be frequent armed robberies and attacks on intercity roads throughout the country. Public transportation is not safe.  While urban road conditions are fair, rural roads are in poor condition and roadside assistance is not available.  Travelers should exercise great caution when traveling by land in Burkina Faso.  All but a few roads are unpaved, narrow, and full of potholes.  Livestock and children often dart onto the road without warning.  Road travel at night is especially dangerous and, if at all possible, should be avoided.  At night, there is a high volume of truck traffic passing through the country and pedestrians, bicycles, and carts pose a major hazard on unlit, unmarked roads.  Vehicles are often dangerously overloaded and poorly maintained.  Drivers, including motorcyclists and bicyclists, are often careless.  The police rarely enforce traffic laws and are virtually absent on non-urban roads.  Emergency services are unreliable and overtaxed.

Not to say that they won't drive of course--just that I hope TPTB took all this into account. Having travelled extensively in Africa using local transport--I can vouch for the frequently not safe part!

That is exactly why I was surprised when it was determined that TAR was going to such a glamourous location this time around.  And it describes very well why we in the Foreign Service at the time considered a posting to Upper Volta as the end of the world.  Heck, in my day Bagdahd and Teheran were pretty good posts.!

Okay..time for the next theory!

The Flight into Ouagadougou doesn't arrive until about 5 I think? And all teams must be on it or have to wait till the next day for another flight.

Since I think it is too risky for them to travel very far that night --what about if the task actually was nearby and occured at night?

We have the shot of the 3 girls in the dark--and we have the web clue which references hip shaking....
Quote
PLEASE LORD, GIVE ME MILK!
The severe pain of a hernia attacks one Racer at the worst time as one of the older men on the Race falls under the spell of two young, feisty, hip-shaking female Racers. Struggling at a Roadblock, one panicking Racer drops to her knees in tears while her Teammate helplessly looks on.

So what if  there is some sort of a  tribal dancing task?

This video labelled Masks of Wolokoton and Desso Burkina Faso shows some masked dancers--and we still have to fit in our masks from the original vidcaps.

And look for the pink haired dancer--the goths are gonna fit right in here!

Peach,

The scheduled flight arrival is 740pm and given the distance I can't imagine them being very early. Given the position of Ouagadougou right at the eastern end of the Prime Meridian time zone (Niamey is in the Continental time zone), it is going to have early sunsets, so I think it will be dark before the time teams arrive at the airport. Also, it is close to the Equator, which would argue for year-round 12 to 13 hour days. The official sunrise/sunset tables show sunrise on July 13 for 549am and sunset at 636pm.

Okay, now I am confused. I took that arrival time straight from the missionaries blog (http://www.ergatai.com/wp/?p=269):

They also very kindly gave us a weather report:
Quote
We are happy to report that we and the Johnsons made it to Burkina Faso at around 5pm local time on Friday (1PM on the east coast).  It was in the mid 90’s and very humid.  .......We, ... were able to sleep in this morning.( 7/14) Then we had a great rain that cooled things down, so the heat hasn’t been too bad yet.  Thank you so much for all your prayers.

Also looked back--Chateau's original flight info (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,12521.msg233599.html#msg233599) has the arrival time  scheduled for 4:35 (interestingly, the plane also stopped in Niamey on the way down!). Is this just a case of funky hard to figure out retrospective times? I t isn't a whole different flight is it cause that would be interesting! ???

Peach:

I believe some reports of people traveling on planes with the Amazing Race teams stated unequivocally that Donald and Nicholas were father and son as a result of talking to them during a long flight. You can't believe all such reports, but retropective airline flight information from reliable sources can usually be taken to the bank. In order to arrive 2 hours earlier and stop in Niamey, that flight would have had to depart no later than 130pm from Paris. The listed departure time for flight AF730 of 1640 checks out. The current Saturday nonstop flight from CDG to OUA is AF730 departing CDG now at 1630 and arriving OUA at 2105. That could be due to time change back to standard time for Europe. There is a flight AF732 which departs CDG for OUA multiple times per week but only on Tuesdays, thursdays and Sundays. It leaves at 1130am with one stop somewhere and arrives at 550pm.

I still think it is AF 732.  It meets all the known criteria.  Airwise says it was active on July 13th for what that is worth.

And, Apskip, you need to check your timeline because we have that teams arrive in Dubrovnik on July 19th.  Not on July 18th as you have indicated.

Has it been confirmed the teams travel to Niger?  (i thought i searched all threads & must have missed it.)

If not, what would prevent them from taking a charter from Ouagadougou to Timbuktu (mainly because i want them to)?    :snakes:

....& then after tasks in Timbuktu, they fly on to Europe (Florence).

Plus a charter flight (anywhere) would avoid the dangers or mud/flooding mentioned elsewhere.

Not quite, CHATEAU. Here is segment 6 from my latest timeline, post #22 on the SPECULATIVE TIMESLINES thread:

6. 18 FLR to FRA LH4067 0715 0855
FRA to DBV LH2468 1210 1355
Note: there is one later nonstop FLR to FRA LH4059 1010 1140, but the connection goes FRA ZAG, then ZAG DBV and arrives DBV 1635

Let me draw your attention to the "18" above which is the day in July.

No, Airwise does not say that AF732 flew on July 13. Unfortunately right now it is not saying that AF730 flew on July 13 either. I think an important input is the Air France schedules. Those schedules for July of 2008 suggest that AF732 may be the right choice, as it will be flying on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. AF730 will be flying on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. There are no flights on Thursdays. My recollection of what Airwise did say in the August 2007 timeframe about July 13, 2007 is captured in the original posts that precede the Speculative Timelines thread and that clearly stated only
AF730. My conclusion is that it could be either flight.

I'm going with the missionaries. They were letting their families back home know that they arrived safely and I'm going to trust that they know when they arrived. But if there is a later flight as well, that will be interesting if the teams aren't as bunched up! And somewhere in the missionaries blog they do talk about a stop before Ouagadougou as well.

You're right, it's not showing now.  When I checked on October 6th they had it (actual Airwise screen capture shown below).  I think they have an evolving data base that is not 100% oriented toward historical accuracy.  I have run into reproducibility problems with them before.

My bet goes with Donald and Nicolas on flight 732 with the missionaries.  I see Peach likes the missionary position too.

Where is your evidence for teams arriving in Dubrovnik on July 18th?  I bet that TK and Rachel arrive there on the 19th as Eilan has reported.

Train to Bobodioulasso maybe?

Abijhan is too far--it is about a 23-24 train ride...

Train to O or train leaving O for somewhere else??????

Nope. I pointed out earlier in this thread that the Na Ka Boom statue is at the Railroad station. That is likely to be the destination in the clue that teams receive in Amsterdam as they leave the pitstop. Peach's information on the paucity of where the railroad goes in the best of times and how it is mostly out of business is certain to be accurate, so there will be no train rides for AR12 teams in my estimation.

But they do appear to be standing in line at what looks like a ticket window...and we do see a train...

I am still unable to find any info on buying tickets for outside the country at all...

But trains to Bobodioulasso I think are possible?  But why they would want to go there I don't know...

Where is your evidence for teams arriving in Dubrovnik on July 18th?  I bet that TK and Rachel arrive there on the 19th as Eilan has reported.
That could have happened, but if so it will be really difficult to fit in Vilnius, Jaisalmer(or somewhere else in northern India), Osaka, and Taipei, then arrive in Girdwood in time for July 29. The best way for that to happen is if teams arrive into Dubrovnik on July 18 and depart from there July 20. My evidence is pure logistical logic which more often than not proves to give the right answer.

I certainly looks like a train ride. The editing in the promo would have us think they arrive in Ouaga by train, but I agree with the others that's unlikely. Maybe just a trip to the "suburbs." It would have been no trouble for the producers to fly people/livestock in from any part of the country for a milk-and-mask show.

There is a Mossi village near the capital city on the road to Bobo-Diaoulasso. Here is a photo of it:  Mossi Village in Ouagadougou (http://www.alovelyworld.com/webbur/htmgb/oua58.htm) If this turns out to be a site for AR12 tasks, teams will be heading west out of Ouagadougou rather than east as I have predicted. The train line also runs there.

From Bobo-Diaoulasso there are 3 basic alternatives to reach international air transportation:
1. return to Ouagadougou
2. Go about 300 miles south to Abidjan, Ivory Coast, which is a much bigger airport hub than OUA. The flights from there to CDG have been detailed in the Locations thread.
3. Bobo-Diaoulasso itself has a small airport that presumably has flights to OUA and ABJ.

Here is some more information on railroads in Burkina Faso. Some of this may already have been presented by Peach, I don't remember.

The 510-km (317-mi) Mossi Railroad in Burkina Faso is part of the line that begins at Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, and ends in Niger, some 1,145 km (710 mi) away. The line serves the towns of Banfora, Bobo-Dioulasso, Koudougou, and Ouagadougou; 25–40% of the railway traffic passes through Burkina Faso, where total rail trackage was 622 km (386 mi) in 2002. Planning for the construction of a railroad from Ouagadougou to Tambao (353 km/219 mi) to exploit the mineral deposits in the area was begun in October 1981. Constructed by volunteers, the line reached Donsin, 33 km (21 mi) from Ouagadougou, in 1987, and the second stage to Kaya (77 km/48 mi) was completed by 1991.

Note that the above information is not consistent. If there is only 386 miles of track, the 317 miles which gets from the western border of Burkina Faso to Ouagadougou will only leave 69 miles. That will not come anywehere close to reaching the border with Niger to the east

EDITOR's NOTE - Further research indicates that the lien ends in Kaya north of Ouagadougou and does not get anywhere near Niger. Also, that research has turned up this statement from the website of thte holding company that owns SITARAIL:

Railway operations has been severely disrupted due to the current political unrest in the Ivory Coast. Various attempts have been made to restore the operations but these proved extremely difficult. The border between Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso has also been closed at different intervals depending on stability in the Ivory Coast.

The company is confident that operations could return to normal as soon as peace has returned to the region.

This totally supports the information PEACH received and presented, but does not mean that some rail services cannot operate within Burkina Faso. The question is where would AR12 want to go?

I think the sisters hugging might be before the storm but what do I know? You think they are instructed to take a taxi to the pitstop?
If thats a sister in green she is looking for shelter while Lorena braves out the storm and cont to milk.
We see Shana & Jen too with the camels when the storm is coming so  ...
Teams arrive in Ouga -- Naba Koom -- get a clue --do a dance with the locals -- spend the night in a perhaps one of those mud huts? Take a train to somewhere Bukina Faso -- do detours and Roadblocks but what the heck is the detour? leading camels? I'm so confused.

puddin, here is what I'm thinking:

1. It is likely to be a TBC in spite of what TAR Asia indicates and MICHAEL D wants. The structure of the AR12 indicates that there has to be one before Taiwan and there will not be a more contiguous place than in Africa.

2. It certainly looks like my prediction that railroad travel will not be involved is wrong. That means that such travel will be on the morning of July 14(which is not a national holiday in Burkina Faso despite its French heritage). Where do they go? there are not many choices, although there may be intermediate places that I don't know about. The major choices are:

a. Kaya to the north of Ouagadougou
b. Koudougou about 150 km west of Ouagadougou
c. Bobo-Dioulasso about 300 km west of Ouagadougou

The Mossi people lived throughout the whole region, so here is a link to information about them: Mossi People (http://www.uiowa.edu/~africart/toc/people/Mossi.html)

The census of camels in Burkina Faso indicates 15, 263 in the country. My ongoing research into where camels are most prevelant keeps pointing to Gorom-Gorom in northern Burkina Faso. If you want to see several photos of this, consult
Blog of Burkina Faso and Elsewhere (http://www.voiceinthedesert.org.uk/keith/archives/photos/index.html) and look for the Jan. 19, 2007 and Dec. 29, 2006 entries.

How could teams get to Gorom-Gorom from Kaya, the end of the railroad line?

Here's some new Lonely Planet information on road travel within Burkina Faso:
Buses and vans are called cars in Burkina Faso, and they run with admirable frequency from Ghana, Niger, Togo and Mali. Bush taxis and minibuses also do the same inter-country trips but you may find you have to get out at the borders, cross, and pick up another one on the other side. Minibuses are often 25% cheaper than the Peugeot 504 bush taxis. Driving your own car in and out of the country is fairly easy, and generally speaking the roads are in fairly good condition.

Gorom-Gorom is about 150 road miles from Kaya. Once teams reach Gorom-Gorom, the inevitable question is what next? The answer is that Gorom-Gorom is about 200 miles by road from Niamey, Niger. It is a somewhat greater distance from Bamako, Mali. No other major airport is within reach except of course returning to Ouagadougou, which I consider unlikely.

Sorry, must have train ride since we have shot of Nathan (red tank top) looking outof train as it arrives somewhere; also kids running along side train as it arrives somewhere; and african child on train (cutey)

While I have the floor, more observations:

Departure of Jason and Lorena in Amsterdam and it is still dark; taxi ride of Nathan and Jenny in the dark; departure of Donald and Nicholas is in daylight and must be after 5:34AM (sunrise on July 13)  Do they have time to catch plane to CDG and connecting flight to our favorite African nation? AF plane leaves at 10:55AM and arrives in O at 4:35pm.  Sunset is at 6:35PM

Seems teams must go directly to Ouagadougou and not do task in the Netherlands or France before flying to BF.

Upon arrival looks like the sun is setting.  Then we have drummer in the dark (reversed shot with ANP...on pant leg)  Lorena with sisters behind her wiggling with the beat; also there with Grandpa.  All at night; upon arrival go somewhere to see local cultural event ?  Next morning go to train station to buy ticket (Jennifer?)

Train to who knows where.  Early morning.  Perhaps early morning shot of sisters in cab is on way to railroad station from overnight somewhere.  Sunrise at 5:49AM

Train comes into Ouagadougou station.  Shot from train arriving somewhere else, very rural looking, kids running along beside train (train yards in O. so no running)  Nathan looking out of train as it arrives in new location.

Camels.  Crossing RR spur.  Roadblock.  Milking camel.  Detour?  Something to do with leading the camels to water? or something else?  Lorena milking "Please Lord, give me Milk" title quote.  Jennifer milking.

Clever CBS editors:  good closeup of watch on Jason's arm is magled by CBS just as it comes into focus; face showing digital time is wiped out by added glare onto face of watch.

Nathan and Jenny.  Jenny pumps arm into the air as she reads clue and screems: 'BINGO"  Reading clue to pit stop or to next clue location?  Really acts like they are first, but their clothing does not match.  Both have on long sleeve shirts and Jenny has her green windbreaker.  If this was at end of roadblock or detour it would be midday and HOT.

In on-air CBS promo: no shots of Azaria/Henedeka; Kynt/Vyxsin; or TK/Rachel.  Mean anything?

Here's the CBS Distribution Map (http://www.the506.com/nflmaps/2007-11-CBS.html) for Sunday. The areas in red will get the Steelers-Jets game.

This will include SE Texas, New Orleans, parts of Mississippi, Atlanta (sorry, Peach), Tampa-St. Pete, parts of South Carolina, most of North Carolina, eastern and western Viriginia, most of West Virginia, Cincinnati, eastern KY, most of PA except Philadelphia, most of Wisconsin, most of Michigan, most of New York including NYC and Albany, northern NJ and all of Connecticut. So be ready for a delay of TAR in the affected areas.

Arizona gets the game too, but won't experience a delay.

TRAVEL TO GOROM-GOROM

Here is some new information, primarily about bus travel in the Sahel region of northeastern Burkina Faso(where most of the camels are), to address the possibility of gorom-gorom being the place where the camel action takes place. Keep in mind that July 14 will be Saturday morning, so I have deleted parts that apply to other days of the week. Also, the road from Ouagadougou was laid with tarmac in 2006 as far as Dori to prevent washouts during the rainy season. AR12 teams would presumably switch from rail to road in Kaya where the rail runs out. That might involve charter mini-buses(that seems the most sensible to me since eveyone will have to be on the same train and there is only one road to Gorom-Gorom that goes from Ouagadougou to Kaya to Dori to Gorom-Gorom. Below is information on the limited public bus options:

To Dori from Ouagadougou: There are 3 options: SOGEBAF, TSR, and STMB. SOGEBAF and TSR go from Ouaga to Dori twice daily, and occasionally SOGEBAF will add additional busses if there is demand or to go to Gorom and Markoye. SOGEBAF and TSR both leave from the Sankariare gare de SOGEBAF. (The TSR station is directly next to the SOGEBAF station) They both leave at 7h and 16h. Ouaga- Dori costs 5000 cfa.  On Sunday both companies send a bus to Markoye at the same time. STMB goes from Ouaga to Dori but only once a day. The bus leaves from the main STMB bus station at 15h. It costs 5000cfa.

From Dori to other parts of the Sahel: Go to the gare routiere de Dori. It is actually the same place as the STMB gare. At the gare you will find lots of bush taxis going to all sorts of destinations. It is uncertain where or when they actually go. It can be said that they don’t go there that often. Marché day in Dori(thursday) will definitely provide more options. Definitely only once day or maybe only once a week. Good luck.

From Dori to Gorom-Gorom: Go next door to the TSR gare and ask about anything going to Gorum. There is almost always at least one camion per day going to Gorum. The rainy season will definitely make the trip a lot more difficult, offering fewer cars and depending on the level of the water can be impassable in places. Alternatively, as stated earlier, SOGEBAF and maybe TSR go direct from Ouaga to Gorum on Wednesday at 10h and to Markoye Sunday at 10h.

Editor's Note - July 14 is indeed a Saturday as pointed out by a later post by GegorgiaPeach. However, as anticipated by Peach it has no impact on the deletions I made from my original source.

Pa. here but if not Philly I can pick it up on UHF antenna  :yess: thanks Ken!

Michael is right I did ask for opinions on TBC and have a few thoughts --
In Lorena's scene with the camel she has a confessional but we don't see it, probably because it is given somewhere they don't want us to see as in the pitstop.
TPTB for once have not shown us the teams arriving at the pitstop (how dare they!)
So, I'll go with the so called TBC this week as well -- no boobie prize this week for first place :yikes
Note: I'm not playing the games so really don't care either way if a team is eliminated or not but there are a few I'd like to see go out like now ;D!

Here is some information on the SAHEL region from a Christian missionary:

The Sahelian Environment
The province has low rainfall, about 300mm(10 inches)/yr, and the landscape for most of the year is dry, generally covered in sparse acacia trees and the occasional baobab.
It has traditionally been pasture land for the nomadic Fulani and their cattle. As other peoples have moved into the area, increasingly marginal land is being used to farm millet and sorghum, the only crops that really grow in the zone. The increasing population pressure on the land results in the erosion of fertile land and the advance of the desert. The first sand dunes are found here, and in June, as the rainy season is approaching, occasional sand storms roll across the landscape, blocking out the sun.

The Development of the Sahel
The Sahel is the least developed part of Burkina. It is a vastly rural area, used predominantly for livestock, with some farming. There has however been some success in building dams to harvest the rain that falls between July-Sept, to irrigate previously uncultivated land for rainy season rice fields. The zone has been struck by frequent droughts and locust swarms, making for a fragile existence and the well-publicised famines of 1973, 1984, and 2005. Climatic conditions seem to be getting worse with global warming, deforestation and the advance of the desert. The government and development agencies have invested in environmental protection and in reforestation programmes, but wood is increasingly scarce - being sought for daily life in cooking as well as for building. Experiments with alternatives for cooking fuel and for building materials inevitably meet resistance because of cost, inconvenience, and reluctance to leave tradition.
Human development in the region is also the most fragile in the country, with low literacy and life expectancy. Oudalan, for example, has a population of about 170 000, with a literacy rate of 8%, a life expectancy of 42, and with only 2 doctors and 34 nurses for the whole province.

There is little in the way of infrastructure, although the first paved road in the area was recently finished in 2006, linking Dori to the nation's capital, Ouagadougou.

The Sahelian Peoples and Culture
The Sahel is inhabited primarily by the Fulani, but there are also many Tamacheq and Songhai especially in Oudalan, and Kurumba villages around Djibo. The southern border of the sahel meets the "Mossi plateau", and some Mossi and other peoples from the south work in the sahel, mostly in commerce or government services, such as teaching, health, or police.

If the teams go north by bus; what do the scenes with the train mean?  Could this be at the end of the ep with teams headed for Niger?  We see Nathan on the train dressed like we have not seen him before.  Could ep 3 end with teams on the way to Niger after getting the go ahead clue for the TBC at the mat?  Questions on top of questions.

But perhaps once again editors are teasing us with a shot of Nathan in his red tank top from ep 4 in the promo for ep 3 as they did with the shot of Jenny landing in the ditch shown as part of ep 1 promo

Arn't the Tamacheq known as the Blue Men?  We see such a man with a blue turbin walking between Grouch and his  daughter leading the camels.

What are the train schedules from O to Niger late in the day of the 14th or early AM on the 15th?

Come on Puddin and apskip help me out :hearts:

GMAN, I'll help you out, but you may not like it. The train runs west from Ouagadougou to the Ivory Coast border, but it is shut down there. My best guess is that you won't find camels in that direction. You could find a very long bus ride from Bobo Dioulasso to Bamako, Mali to reach the second country and get out of Africa, but I don't believe that happened. The most sensible, logical thing is for teams to be sent to where the camels and Tuareg people are, in the Sahel region found in the northeast corner of Burkina Faso. The train only will take them to end of the line at Kaya, so they will have to switch to road transport to get to Dori and then on to Gorom-Gorom, the center of camel trading in Burkina Faso. After all tasks are done there, I predict the TBC will happen. That clue will then send teams to Niger. Since there are no trains possible, it will have to be by road.

Teams will backtrack 56km to Dori and go maybe another 300 km by road from there to Niamey.

I am a relatively new subsscriber to TV Guide. May I point out the following stark contrast:

Nov. 18 - The nine teams must milk several stubborn camels to receive a clue.

Nov. 25 - Another team is eliminated.

Dec. 2 - Another team is eliminated from the race.

Do you all understand the significance of what is different between Nov. 18 and Nov. 25 and Dec. 2?

Sure sort of means a TBC this week.

Thanks for input, apskip.  So that seems to say that they will be taking the train from O north.  So the scene of Nathan with the red tank top looking out of the train as it arrives somewhere fits here.  But when we seem him and Jenny next, he is wearing the green long-sleeved shirt with white tee shirt showing. Where does the red tank come in?

It just struck me one of the major reasons besides camels that AR12 was planned to go northeast. In the south of Burkina Faso, including I think Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso and Fada N'Gourma, the average rainfall falling in the 4 summer months is 40 inches. However, in the far north it is sub-Saharan conditions and the rainfall is only 10 inches per year. The probability of travel disruption due to a monsoon is tremendously reduced and that extends over to the western tip of Niger too.

During the rainy season it looks like the northern route from Ouagadougou to Niamey through Dori is preferred rather than the shorter southern route through Fada N'Gourma. I believe that World Race Productions discovered that during their research and then set up the race route accordingly.

According to Slowhatch's cool map of BF in Maps^3 the Voie Ferrée (means railway) was planned to extend all the way up into Touareg Provence and end somewhere around the town of Markoy.  The map is kind of old.  The website is dated 2005.  So maybe this track is a reality now.

Trains all-the-way   ;D

Another possibility and used quite often by TPTB is charter flights.  There are airports with charter companies in Dori and Gorom Gorom.

Yes, the runways are 5085 feet for Gorom-Gorom and 3937 feet for Dori. That is not up to international standards, but it's quite adequate for landing a small charter plane.

Chateau, we'll see. However, planned railroad projects have a way of not getting built in Africa. They just managed to pave the road from Dori to Gorom-Gorom last year. Why would they be more timely in completing a rail line extension? I have examined a lot of information about railroads in Burkina Faso and I have not since a single word about what you mention.

The line on Slowhatch's map goes to Markoy by skirting Gorom-Gorom. Markoy is equally a center of camels and would be feasible from that perspective. The question is whether being that much farther from Niamey is a good idea. There is no paved road back from Markoy to Gorom-Gorom to get to the main road from Dori to Niamey.

Maybe they go to Split on the 18th? I dunno just thinking out loud. Now that I think about it --didn't the teams say their flight was late or something on the 18th? I'll have to read the spoiler thread again.

1. puddin does not need to turn on her spellcheck. She has spelled each of those places, several of which are difficult, perfectly. If she hadn't the geographic spelling police would be after her and, as you may have noticed, they are not.

2. There are several European places which will almost certainly not be the next place after Ouagadougou. They are Questembert and La Gacilly in France and Borgo in Italy.

3. Everything else on puddin's list is a legitimate African place that could possibly be the next place after Ouagadougou. My bet is now on Gorom-Gorom as the place for the TBC(although I do agree with Chateau that it could be Markoye) and Niamey Niger for the follow-on third pitstop.

I'm not clear on what source has brought Diapaga into the fray. However, here are some facts about it:

Diapaga has an airport runway of 3937 feet(if that seems to be common it is exactly 1000 meters), sufficient for small planes but not for major international flights.

Diapaga is located about 50km south off the road from Fada N'Gourma to Niamey at Kantchari. It is the capital of Tapoa province, which is the easternmost extension of Burkina Faso. Diapaga is almost due south of Niamey.

No railroad runs toward Fada N'Gourma from Ouagadougou.

We look to be in a bind here; not much progress.

So far we have:

Receive clue at pit stop to fly to OUAGADOUGOU.  Jason and Lorena read clue while it is still dark; Grandpa and Nickolas read it after sunrise (5:34AM)

Teams fly from AMS to CDG and then on to that desert resort in Upper Volta or rather Burkina Faso.

Are all the teams able to get to CDG for the 10:30AM AF flight to O.?

The sun is setting as the teams arrive.  Sunset at 6:35 PM

First teams must find some local location to watch an indiginous dance ceremony.  Teams than camp out over night waiting for first light and taxi to railroad station to catch train to Gorom-Gorom.

Finally, after arriving perhaps by taxi from Dori, find clue for DETOUR.  Two task typical of the Sahel region of Burkina Faso: (1) Herd camels; teams must capture and lead pairs of camels to the camel market. (2) Swat 100 black flies.  Each task has its own pros and cons. Clue leads them to:

ROADBLOCK.  One member of the team must milk a camel (female, of course) fill a gourd with milk and carry it to the dairy master to receive their next clue.

Proceed to the final pit stop: "Bingo!" Jenny says thinking they have won and will get a nice trip to Hawaii, but once there Phil does not Philimate anyone, but tells them "You are still racing; here is your next clue."

Teams run to the local airstip, short dirt track, and sign up for departure the next morning by charter plane to Niamey, Niger.

CHATEAU (or anyone else that wants to take this on), I had an idea on how to settle the question of whether the rail line goes north of Kaya. I fired up Google Earth, which I hadn't used in a while, and set in on Kaya. The best resolution in that area was so indistinct that I could only distinguish two lines going north. I cannot tell if both are roads or if one is a road and the other is a railroad. Perhaps someone else trying it will get better results and if there is a rail line can track how far north it actually goes.

Looked at the promo from last night again.  To settle question of a railroad, we have shots of camels crossing over a railroad track.  Looks new (at least rail is not rusted) and of narrow guage.  This scene runs right into scenes of Grumppy and Daughter leading camels.  So wherevere they are if not Gorom-Gorom, then there is a railroad line in the area.

I noted the camel(singular, not plural since I saw only one) crossing over the rail line behind the rail car. It does raise an interesting question of how camels are available where the rail line is since there is no evidence I have found of any around Ouagadougou or Kaya. There are several possibilities:

1. There is somewhere between Ouagadougou and Kaya that has camels.
2. The rail line has been extended north to a place that has camels.
3. Since there are over 15000 camels in the country, a stray camel being sighted along the existing rail line is no particular big deal and the real camel action is still in Gorom-Gorom.

It should not surprise you that I believe option #3 is much more probable than the other 2 options. My rationale is that the Sahel-like conditions that we see in the screencaps involving camels are best found in the Sahel.

Where do we think the leading of the camels takes place in the episode? Before/After RB -- if it's before the blondes are behind because they are leading them as the storm is coming.

ok i have followed that railway line and it goes all the way to the Niger border pretty much, bar about 3 miles.  I can post screen shots however it only shows if I am at a 6 mile scale.  Could be a few pictures.
I think this is up to date information i have just (last week)tracked my brother through Kenya via GPS

Exactly.  :jam:

.....(or better still...charter to Timbuktu.)  :jumpy:

patlini, it's a terrific contribution. Thanks. Your work does not settle the question of precisely where the camel action is, but in combination with puddin's photo of the camels in Dori it limts the possibilities, which is an excellent thing.

I searched hard for photos of Dori, found few, and none had any camels.

At this point, Markoye is in the Sahel and would be the top choice from the camels' point of view. However, the knowledge that there are really camels in the Dori area is sufficient to make that my favorite since Dori is directly on the main northern route to Niger and from Markoye they have to take the unpaved road to Gorom-Gorom and then the paved road south to Dori, maybe 80km total, to get to Dori. From Dori teams would just go east and cross into Niger. This may not seem like much, but the extra 2 hours round-trip up to Markoye and back could be critical and I don't think World Race Productions would have designed it to take the extra distance and time.

If the train goes from Ouagadougou to Dori, perhaps that makes a better location than Gorom-Gorom for the playtime with the camels.

apskip, you seem good at finding schedules, etc., anything on the Mossi Railroad that might make this all possible?  I'm guessing that the teams would travel on the RR the morning after arrival in Ouagadougou.  This would give them time to do the tasks before the storm closes things down.

GMAN, I had previously tried top find any schedules availables. Please remember that we are referring to a third world country and they do not operate in as sophisticated a manner as we are used to seeing in transportatio systems in first world countries.

I did find once again the source material stating that the rail line ends in Kaya. Here it is from Answer.com:

Transport in Burkina Faso
The current version of the article was imported from the CIA World Factbook.

Railways
A rail link connects Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso with the port of Abidjan in Côte d’Ivoire: the line from Ouagadougou to the Nigerien capital Niamey stops at Kaya. Instability in Côte D’Ivoire in 2003 forced a rerouting of rail freight from the Abidjan corridor to ports in Togo, Benin, and Ghana via the road network. A proposed rail link between Ouagadougou and Pô in Burkina Faso and Kumassi and Bonakra in Ghana, has been discussed with Ghanaian officials, and feasibility studies are being undertaken to explore this possibility, which would provide rail access to the inland port of Bonakra. Burkina Faso and Ghana use different rail gauges.

total: 622 km (517 km from Ouagadougou to the excellent deepwater port at Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (on the border) and 105 km from Ouagadougou to Kaya)
narrow gauge: 622 km 1.000-m gauge (1995 est.)

Railway links with adjacent countries
Mali - no - same gauge 1000mm
Niger - no railways
Benin - no - same gauge 1000mm
Togo - no - same gauge 1000mm
Ghana - no - break of gauge - 1000mm/1067mm
Côte d'Ivoire - yes - same gauge 1000mm

2006
An Indian proposal has surfaced to link the railways in Benin and Togo with landlocked Niger and Burkino Faso.

A Czech proposal has also surfaced to link Ghana railways with Burkina Faso. [1]. The manganese deposits near Dori are one source of traffic.

Towns served by rail
Banfora
Bobo-Dioulasso
Koudougou
Ouagadougou - capital
Kaya - terminus

It appears that the CIA may be wrong.

The saddles seen in this preview cap (source (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ekrubmj/1975800251/)) are interesting. The usual practice for Touareg saddles is to adorn the front with a stylized agades cross (see here (http://www.camelphotos.com/camel_saddle.html)). But the curved front can be seen to the north in Mali (http://www.galenfrysinger.com/touregs.htm), as well as the Bella Gorom Gorom picture (http://www.flickr.com/photos/under_the_acacias/218660704/) I've already cited.

Latest info now shows Christina in a yellow tank top which is different from that seen when she is perhaps doing one task of the DETOUR.  So this suggests to me that another day has passed.

Same is true for Nathan: in early shots he is wearing green longsleeve shirt; on the train he is wearing red tank top. As he is in CBS stock team ids.  Again another day?

Shot of Nathan and Jenny reading clue and she claims "bingo" is very misleading.  Could be when they first arrive in second site after trip from Ouagadougou.  Or IS IT THE FIRST FAST FORWARD?  We do not see this team doing any of the tasks.

This seems to indicate that there is a sleep over somewhere out in the countryside of BF and the plot continues as they leave BF the next day and head for Niger (or wherever).

Are CBS promo makers playing with our brains and including shots from ep 4 in the promo for ep3? They did it before by including shots from ep 2 in the promo for ep 1.

The change in clothes could certainly be due to a DBL Leg.  In each season with one, they include at least a 12 hour (often longer) break in racing, just no provided shelter or food for the teams).

I must have missed that.  Don't remember pix of Nathan milking.  What color shirt was he wearing when he was milking?

So have reached a consensus yet?  Do teams go North from Ouagadougou to Dori, or South to  Bobo?  And it they go South are there camels in the area since it is not in the Sahel desert area?

The leading of camels seems to be one task of the DETOUR. It looks like task may entail the capture, select, whatever of two pair of camels: one pair with saddles and one pair without.  And then lead them to water! This seems to be the case in the few shots we have of people leading camels.

okay got it! That is Don then milking the camel that looks like it just took a flying leap!

Wonder why the heck Nathan would do this one? Not smart...

And your non-fuzzy picture does look more like a scarf than a helmut...so okay. Scarves more to keep out the dust a little maybe...

And just to clarify one more time--do we think ALL the teams were on the same flight? Any chance they could be on two?

And the sisters in the Taxi are bothering me...I'm thinking now they may be going to wherever what they think the pitstop will be which means back in a city (Bobo?)....

which means no road travel, which may mean no second African country either.

I believe in the TBC--know it makes sense to stay in the area--but keep thinking for some reason they are heading to Florence sooner than we think.  Don't know why...

The whole FIVE new countries thing bothers me --we already have Ireland, Croatia, Lithuania and Burkina Faso, and Taiwan. And I don't think CBS is counting Taiwan as China.

Could Nate/Jenny have just gotten a route clue from Phil and be just finding out where the next stop will be? I'd be shouting Bingo! too if I thought I was leaving for Florence... :hearts:

Not Rachel--Jenny!

And who is this please? Is it Ron? Or Don? ???  I know we are saying Gramps but for sure??

Who has a blue backpack?
Yeah its DOn.  Not only the shorts for Nic.  But Nic has dark hair, that one appears bald.

As to backpacks both have blue backpacks with grey side panels.

The mission people said there were 40 to 50 people on the flight so yeah, one flight to me anyway.
I think the sisters are in the taxi early per Chateau's times.

If this is the roadblock, we have a lot of teams bunched up here.

No fast forward then.

Have we seen the Goths anywhere, doing anything?

Frankly, my dear, I'm confused! ???

If the gal with the blue and white bandana is Jenny (I thought the sisters had short hair) then we see her behind Jason grimmacing as Lorena tries to milk the camel.  We also see the sisters (and another gal, Rachel??) dancing with grandpa.  So that accounts for part of each team except the Goths.

Thats Marianna behind Jason, while we see Julia doing the roadblock. And thats Lorena with the sisters dancing with gramps.

And I don't think CBS is counting Taiwan as China.
It better not. Taiwan is not part of China as much as the Communists would like to think it is. It has its own democratically-elected government.

I'm not entirely sure, but I think I saw a new promo during the Jets game. Well, the promo was the same, but it had some new voiceover from the game announcers. They said something about a team quitting. Did anyone catch it?

Early in the game. Yeah, they were talking about Ron's hernia and I stopped listening since I figured it was nothing new, but then in the end they talked about someone quitting. Or maybe I heard them wrong and I'm just going crazy.

I agree totally--but there was discussion elsewhere that we could get  around the FIVE new country thing if TPTB were counting Taiwan as China.  (:;)

I think that the dynamic involved here is World Race Productions trying to suck up to China(the mainland variety), which has been the site of several amazing Race  legs in the past. WRP wants to maintain the relationship for the future and to name Taiwan as a "new country" would alienate China. So they ducked the question by not naming Taiwan as a new country even though they clearly are.

Is it me or what but it seems 3rd team to be eliminated is a cursed for F/F teams....   :umn:

Excluding the family edition, 7/11 are F/F teams that are the 3rd team to be eliminated...

And usually its down to some mistakes and in this case Julia actually told Lorena how to milk the camel... :pull

But overall, this episode was pretty cool due to the 5-way battle to the pitstop...That was funny man  :lol3:

I want to attempt a guess at when the first finishing team did so and when the 8th team did so. Here's my timeline:

6am ticket Office Opens
7am Train leaves Ouagadougou station (pure guess)
8am arrival at Bingo (assumes train moving at 30 miles per hour)
830am First team completes Camel milking
915am Last team completes Camel milking
900am First team completes Teach/Learn
945am Last team completes Teach/Learn
915am First team at Pitstop
1000am 8th team at Pitstop

the implications of this are on the completion of the next pitstop. Teams have to be at Ouagadougou airport before 11pm on the next evening(July 15) if they are able to catch the Air France flight to Paris. With a 12 hours pitstop, they have a maximum of 2 hours to get to tasks, do tasks and get back to the airport. My conclusion is that it isn't going to happen and World Race Productions, anticipating that, schedules a 24 hour pitstop and they fly back to Paris the evening of July 16.

Anybody's thoughts on the above timeline are welcome.

Neobie :hearts: has posted a fabulous link in MAPS! which has let me update the maps to include the railline (map may date from 1954 but better than any we have had!)

He also gave us these coordinates:

Quote
Managed to match up the train 'station' (1°49'41"W 12°17'52"N) and the town of Bingo (1°49'55"W 12°18'00"N) on Google Earth with this map, but I'm still a little helpless with the rest of the locations. Looks like the building at 1°49'59"W 12°18'11"N is the only one long enough to be the school (the trees kind of match up), so I'm thinking the milking was on the south side of the track and the Pit Stop on the north side?

Could one of you GE wizards give me some pretty pictures for MAPS! with these??  :please:

He also found this link to the Commune of Bingo (http://www.communedebingo.org/index.htm) which is a goldmine of information! (in French but I can just get the essentials!)

Some tidbits from the site:

The road from Ouagadougou to Bingo has been resurfaced and is now "suitable for all seasons".
The govt of Taiwan has helped finance this new clinic, maternity clinic, and Youth center, and latrines-- just dedicated in October:
(http://aycu30.webshots.com/image/33349/2003485501838583329_rs.jpg) (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2003485501838583329)
They are seeking funding for a new ambulance of this type:

A photo gallery of the town council--was trying to find the judges/greeter: MMe Zongo maybe??
(http://aycu19.webshots.com/image/34778/2003404006619179250_rs.jpg) (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2003404006619179250)

Or the regional council: Mmme Lamoussa maybe?
(http://aycu23.webshots.com/image/33862/2000806539168653284_rs.jpg) (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2000806539168653284)

The population is about 2100, and the school has 70 students with 36 boys and 34 girls. They are asking for funding at a cost of 600F to help send a child to school.
There is an "Agricultural School" in Bingo as well--could this be one of those "long" buildings you are seeing in GE? ???

In his post in Maps, maps, maps Neobie found the location of the School in Bingo that was used for the Detour.

From Neobie's lead, here is the location in Google Earth.  See that there is a just barely visible pentagon in the GE image.  This is the flag pole that Phil walks be in his standup for the Detour.

Thanks, but I just plugged in Neobie's coordinates.  It was no biggy.

But a few days ago I did scan all the way along the RR track looking for the place.  Everything looks the same so I missed it.  What we needed was what Neobie did which was to get a map that had the Lat & Long of Bingo.
