'I’ve Become the Archie Bunker of the Home'

LOL Donald?

Amsterdam, Netherlands  July 11th
Two blogs mention seeing Amazing Race teams.
First blog (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,12521.msg233185.html#msg233185):
*We just got done with a walking tour of Amsterdam. Unfortunately it was not as good as the Berlin tour but it was still very interesting. We think we saw some participants from the Amazing Race running through town with a cameraman and sound guy following close behind.

The Dutch also invented the sport of pole vaulting. The original Dutch version, though, is very different from the familiar Olympic one. A tall pole is stood upright in the middle of a canal. The competitor then runs up to the canalside, jumps on the pole, shimmies as quickly as possible to the top and hurls himself forward as the pole falls towards the other side of the canal. The person who reaches the furthest distance from the bank wins.
(source (http://www.thehollandring.com/dutchculture.shtml)) Also called Fierljeppen (http://wapedia.mobi/en/Fierljeppen).

That house gable pointed roof is an unusual form for a Dutch windmill so we may be able to find that by a regional style?

And I JUST cancelled my trip there scheduled for in two weeks ---or I could be tilting at windmills too!

Boingo  makes me laugh! :kissy:

The Dutch province we may be looking for is Friesland, in northern Holland.  Below is an excerpt from wikipedia. (Moderators: Please delete the quote if I violated copy/pasting rules)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friesland

"Another Frisian practice is fierljeppen, a sport with some similarities to pole vaulting. A jump consists of an intense sprint to the pole (polsstok), jumping and grabbing it, then climbing to the top while trying to control the pole's forward and lateral movements over a body of water and finishing with a graceful landing on a sand bed opposite to the starting point. Because of all the diverse skills required in fierljeppen, fierljeppers are considered to be very complete athletes with superbly developed strength and coordination. Another interesting feature are the many windmills. There are 195 windmills in the province of Friesland, from a total of about 1200 in the entire country."

In a PinP which isn't very clear, Jennifer in her green sweat shirt with the white windbreaker tied around her waist, is using a long pole to vault over a water-filled ditch.  There are people behind her, and some others across the ditch.  No idea what this is about. Don't recognize any of the people.
I just saw the tvguide post on the thread for ep two in the Netherlands.  Could this be what Jennifer is doing?  Not quite as athletic as the one shown, but it seems to match.  And makes more sense because it doesn't fit in ep one.

Quick shot of Jason peddling a bike with a cart in front.  Lorena is sitting in the cart holding what looks like travel instructions.  Looks like Aran but could be somewhere else in Ireland. The have their backpacks with them.

Thanks to the oh so lovely Dreamer @ Jokers!! and thanks to Gman for the heads up! No pole vaulting but the Bike shot of Lorena & Jason!

I can't quite read the label on the side of the cart, but a little googling brought up Bakfiets (http://www.bakfiets.nl/eng/models_cargo_bike.php), a Dutch bike that's apparently trendy here (I'd never heard of it  ???).

TAR has gone completely green:  bikes in Ireland, bikes in The Netherlands, and bikes on the wire also in Ireland.

Well --no surprise--the bike scenes are located just behind Central Station Amsterdam by the canal where literally thousands of bikes park every day.

Nice puddin! The marina is definitely going to be a key way of spotting this because one canal and one field in Holland look pretty much like the next one!  :rotf:

This looks like a real contender though...

Team Goth looks worried.  They are hoping that Phil does not say his fateful words.  Thus, I think Team Goth has a problem or two in this leg, but are not Philiminated.

From the article that peach posted from RTVW~ (http://www.realitytvworld.com/news/the-amazing-race-producer-upcoming-twelfth-edition-is-nail-biter-6023.php)
*Doing away with non-elimination legs means there will also be no more penalties
Title: Re: EP2: 'I’ve Become the Archie Bunker of the Home'
Post by: apskip on November 02, 2007, 07:17:35 AM
Yes, but I think he really means only the elmination of the 30 minute penalties associated with a last-place Marked-For-Elimination. He surely can't mean penalties for exceeding the speed limit by 50 km/hr. or for stealing another team's vehicle or other transgressions that had caused them in the past. You always have to wonder when Bertram says anything about an in-the-can Amazing Race because of his track record for not getting all of the nuances just right. He is obviously a Big Picture kind of guy, appropriate to create and produce this type of show but not the person you necessarily want talking to the media.

Puddin - Read that too.  Do you all think that this means NO penalties for violating rules?  Or for not finishing a task?   :o
Title: Re: EP2: 'I’ve Become the Archie Bunker of the Home'

I think it refers only to no penalties for NEL's--loss of baggage, $$, thirty minutes...  Certainly not to no penalties for rule breaking, etc.

Thanks, Rob. Werengouw is a borough in north Amsterdam. As for the far-leaping, maybe the steeple in the background can be ID'd.

I think this may be possibly in Durgerdam--this could be Ransdorp Church:

There is also a Durgendam Marina:

I believe that pic with the Goth's running is towards this area  Church of St.Nicolas is on the Prins Hendrikkade.    I believe Prins Hendrikkade runs parrallel to Centraal Station.  So they are heading south I believe away from the station.

If you look at the building in in the lower left of the picture, they match the buildings that are directly in front of the Goths.

Yes I was.   Maybe some of my personal pictures will come in handy.     Though I didn't take many.

Here's another map showing the location of the St. Nicolas church, the area they are running to.  They might just be catching a bus or tram.   Hmmmm,  or maybe they are running toward the Red Light District which isn't too far away.

Heee... I have to say that I'm just relieved that we all have found it! It is only Monday and I was tired of all those Marinas already!  And GE and I have a love-hate relationship so nice to be done with that part!

Now...what we REALLY need from our guys are some time shots!  :please:

Because we need to get a handle on who might be going out next.

And we have no idea WHAT the two detours in Amsterdam are, right? We sort of know where--but not what? So we need to ponder on that too!

And what else do we still need to know?

Did y'all see that they camped at the last pitstop? Wonder where they might have stayed this time?

  Just throwing this out there as another piece of information.  The girls appear to be running past a train which may be "Sprinter" livery (railway stock).  Here's a blurb on the "sprinter" livery:

The Sprinter (SGM, Stads Gewestelijk Materieel) is a two or three car electric, used on small distances. They are named Sprinter because they're able to accelerate and brake quite fast, making them very suitable for 'stoptrein' services. They were also specifically designed for urban environments where they run commuter services. As a result, they are most commonly found in the Randstad area. The initial idea was that the Sprinter would provide somewhat of a subway/metro service but this plan failed as the cities of Amsterdam and Rotterdam continued to construct their own rapid transit systems. Nevertheless, in the densely populated Randstad, the Sprinters remain popular. Two car versions have been revised and are now named Citypendel. Three car versions can be seen in two versions: the old yellow version, and the refurbished ones in white/yellow/dark blue livery ("Vlaflip").

okay--couple of ideas:

This is clearly on the way to the Pitstop by the Marina--can someone (Chateau?) pinpoint just where? then we could see exactly which way they are coming from. That radio tower or whatever it is in the back ground might help.

Also: where is this? It looks to me like it could possibly be taken on the deck of one of those Dutch canal boats! Giving us maybe an idea for another task?

Thanks for the Video link puddin! Vyxsin looks to me like she could be  taking that deep breath just before you lift something heavy...

Noticed this for the first time on puddin's lovely screencaps:
Azaria bikes:
(http://aycu28.webshots.com/image/33947/2005868186304910818_rs.jpg) (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2005868186304910818)

So I expect teams to travel by Train from Schiphol Airort to Central Station where they go here:
(http://aycu28.webshots.com/image/32627/2005837799202161398_rs.jpg) (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2005837799202161398)
and choose a bike. They may need to bike to Werengouw.

Werengouw
: unknown task  or just collect clue?

Then local train to Ransdorp/Durgerdam where they pole vault a muddy canal: So far seen doing this are Gramps, Shana, and Jenny.

Then by local train again or the cargo bike to Durgerdam where they

--do something on a canal boat? Pick up something heavy?

--transport it and/or themselves using cargo bikes to Pitstop at Durgerdam Marina.

So it is bare bones but a start, right?

The first pictures above "hitting their stride" are in the Arrival hall at Schiphol Airport.

Notice in the cargo bike they have a sack of something--from the canal boat? ???

We saw the blondes before right? With NAthan and Jenny? Because it is hard to tell there if that is a sad or a relieved hug.

And yep, NOT seeing the Lady Ministers can't be good.

Had to reboot--couldn't see the pretty pictures!

What the heck are they hoisting?

You know--in Amsterdam the houses are narrow and so are the stairs. Most houses have a hook on the outside of the top floor and when you move in, most furniture is hoisted in thru the windows using a pulley and that built in hook--because there is NO way to get stuff up the stairs.

Can we tell any more about what is happening?

Patlini--we "know" TK/Rachel are safe...  ;)

Kind of like the siblings reaction last week Michael and we didn't see that coming. Remember that Jen & Nate were happy just not to be eliminated last week but still why are the Blondes clapping for Nate & Jen?

Maybe the blondes and nate and jen are 2nd/3rd or something? We know the goths have a bad day based on the preview and their faces at the pitstop -- who knows, maybe the blondes do get eliminated and just clap to be nice to nate and jen who narrowly avoided elimination again =/

From the clips it looks like the teams doing the pole vault roadblock are jumping in different directions (Jenny and Grandpa are jumping left to right; the others right to left).  I wonder if to complete the roadblock you have to jump over the canal and then jump back.

Jenny is in front of a canal pulling on a block and tackel to fift something up to a canal house.  Could this be one part of a detour: lift or shift?

I thought somewhere in the TAR12 Spoiler thread someone mentioned the Anne Frank house.  That is in Amsterdam.  Could it be  a part of the detour with hoisting stuff to the 3rd floor?

that large black item they are hoisting does appear to be somewhere in Amsterdam proper.  In the background it looks like there is just the top of  a canal boat and the architecture of the buildings looks like Amsterdam.  walking along the canals in Amsterdam is still pretty fresh in my mind after being there last month.   I don't think they are in front the Anne Frank House.  their is  stairway there but I don't think it matches.  They could be in the general area though.   The Anne Frank house could be a location where they pick up a route marker which tells them to do something nearby.

Title: Re: EP2: 'I’ve Become the Archie Bunker of the Home'
Post by: gingerman28 on November 08, 2007, 08:50:57 PM
Certainly not the Anne Frank house  but could be on the same street.  The task could be part of a detour; the lift part.  Looks like one team member may have to run up to the third floor and be there to receive the large TV set the other member has to hoist up using a block and tackle arrangement (it would be too hard to do just with a simple pulley).  We have Jenny hoisting (must be hot she is down to her tank top!) in one scene and the Goths celebrating after completing the task (rope piled at foot of the stairs).  So that is at least two teams doing the Lift.

In the pole vault it is certainly the Roadblock.  Grandson Nickolas is holding a red roadblock clue marker.

We have seen Jenny and Grandpa vaulting from Left to Right (both land in the water) so do they have to do it again until the land safely.  Then we have Jason, Kynt, and one of the blondes jumping from right to left.  Does the team member have to jump first over and then back before completing the task?  Other people seen in the background standing and some jumping all are wearing orange shirts so must be part of a club or team which is monitoring the event.

After the pole vault, the teams seem next to have to peddle a bike-cart from the sporting venue to the mat at the marina.  We have seen Jenny in the cart with Nathan peddling, she is muddy and the two backpacks are in the cart with her.  Same is true with the two sisters.  Julia is peddling I think.

A clue to where they are may lie if we can identify the license plate with has black letters on yellow field.  Next to the EU symbol with the N for Netherlands are the letters SR SD 20  Of course, it could come from anywhere in the Netherlands.

Jason and Lorena look happy as larks, high fiving, at the Marina mat.  Winners?

No it must come right after the mud bath/roadblock Michael -- this must be how they have to get to the pitstop. See the mud on Shana?

So yeah -- I think the top four teams are Sisters/Jason Lorena/Jennifer Nathan/Blondes

OK so it looks like the sisters aren't in first after all since they are somewhere around Kate and Pat who appear to be further behind. Maybe the sisters are just glad that they didn't get eliminated.

Ronald and Christina are about to have that blowout that we saw in the preview. And it appears that Pat/Kate are bringing up the rear. Should be an interesting finish.

Kynt: just be quiet.

Nic: Watch the pinky do it

Vyxsin: thats OK get up and try it again

Kynt: its like a bog

Vyxsin: don't worry about that we'll hose you off later c'mon

Don: I think that I can do it

Nic: I think that might be a costly decision

Pat/Kate: I see oneeee

Pat/Kate: alright lets go out to the street here

Christina: oh thank you so much

Ron: drumroll --travel to the (garble) run drop

Marianna: the other team is here and were but probably going to get on the bus , we dont see Pat or Kate anywhere -- praying to God that this bus gets here before they do

Ron: decompress decompress -- and reconstruct what we did wrong --the key discussion is this -- you are  vacillating --

Christina: OK um

Ron: vacillating does rob us of time so you've got to be more decisive

So Ronald/Christina and Sisters are with eachother at that point -- with Kate and Pat behind.

So could we theorize that we could have a bottom three as follows:

8. Marianna/Julia
9. Ronald/Christina
10. Pat/Kate

The three could be interchangeable at this point.

Wow! That footage pretty much tells us the order of teams 4, 5, 6, and 7 going out of this Roadblock and who is 8 and 9 and 10 going into it. By subtraction, we can figure out which teams are in 1, 2 and 3 although it doesn't give us their order. All this in one short video! The question is how close is this Roadblock to the Pitstop?

Its a good guess elizabeth but someone could mess up on the way to the pitstop and we don't know if Ron & Christina or the sisters place 8 or 9th yet. Who knows maybe grandpa slows them down with the RB and they are 8th or 9th?

In Christina & Ron's scene they get a clue after the bike (you can see the bike in the shot) that directs them to take a bus to Ransdrop @ Werengouw , then we see the sisters waiting at the bustop with Christina & Ron. Also it looks like the hoisting of furniture must be in Amsterdam so I'm guessing that those are the 2 options.

This shot was taken between 11:50 and 11:58 am (assumes July 10th)

Boingo! That is fabulous! And there is our bus stop! :jumpy:

My Dutch is quite rudimentary--

but winkelcentrum Boven would be shopping center Boven- "the apt is next to/overlooks the shopping center"

De bushalte ligt voor de deur, deze brengt u o.a. binnen 10 minuten naar het Centraal Station ==bushalte is bus stop: I think this is saying with the bus stop at the door you are only 10 minutes from Central Station

Another Boingo special find!

Found that cycling link: http://www.bedstede.nl/page410.html

The start of the bike trip to Werengouw should be the same for our guys.

Quote
A bicycle can be rent at or near the Central Station.
Leave the Central-Station at the North-Side, or go cycling around the CS so that you are near the North-Side gate.
You are now in front of the lake IJ, the harbour of Amsterdam.
Take the small ferry for cycles to the Valkenweg/Meeuwenlaan/IJplein, Amsterdam-Noord (Be sure that you have the right one!).
Directly after you got ashore you go to your right and you follow the quai of the lake IJ.
Perhaps you are not allowed the cycle the first part, you can walk for 100 m or as Amsterdam citizens do, ignore the signs.

They will need to take a bike ferry across the IJ and then find their way to Boingo's apt.
(http://aycu24.webshots.com/image/30063/2001925692828512555_rs.jpg) (http://allyoucanupload.webshots.com/v/2001925692828512555)

Quote
"Most people arrive at Central station and go out the front doors. If you want to do something fun and free go out the back. There you will find three small ferries. Each one will take you to a different location. The trips are only 5 to 10 minutes each, but give you a great chance to see things from a different angle. Also you can get some great pictures of different types of boats and ships.

The first one was my favorite, I had no idea that I would have the opportunity to see a real Russian Submarine. The second one goes straight across, and while the shortest trip it has a great little place to grab a cup of hot coffee. I'm sure they serve other drinks and food, but the day I was there was cold, all I wanted was something hot to drink. The third one, goes to the right. If the cruise ship is in, you will have a great chance to grab a picture.

I got that too, puddin, but only cities that receive the Baltimore and Cincinnati game at 4:05 p.m. ET will be affected this week. Most of the country will get an early game.

In fact, you can take a look at the CBS NFL distribution map for Week 10 (http://www.the506.com/nflmaps/2007-10-CBS.html) and the sections shaded in green are affected by a potential overrun.

Cincinnati, Baltimore, Atlanta, New Orleans, a portion of the Carolinas, St. Louis, all of Wisconsin including Milwaukee, western Michigan, most of Minnesota and parts of North Dakota are all affected.

There's a lot of scurrying around on pitstop times for episode 1 so that start times for episode 2 can be estimated. The latest I've seen so far is Marianna and Julia for as late as 320am start time July 11. My recollection is that Nathan and Jennifer will be about 20 minutes behind them, so they should start around 340am.

I expect that the clue will read: Fly to Amsterdam and do ...  That means that the first action of all teams will be to drive to Shannon Airport. I have an estimate that it is almost 100 miles from Connemara Heritage Center(5 miles from Clifden) or wherever they are lodging to Shannon, so it is going to take a solid 2 hours. The first flight on Aer Lingus(to London-Heathrow) leaves at 7am, so teams there by 6am should be able to catch it since there are no customs formalities and it is a small airport. I predict that all 10 teams should catch that flight if they make no navigational errors. If Nathan and Jennifer miss it, they have to wait for the 845am BA flight. The first connection from Heathrow arrives in Amsterdam-Schipol at 1215pm and the second at 150pm.

Lorena & Jason finsih 1st for sure,
TK & Rachel are again in the middle of the pack
Nathan & Jennifer do it abit of catching up
Marianna & Julia stay at the back
Kynt & Vyxsin Dunno

And someone believes that 3 COUPLES are in the final 3
Lorena & Joson arent in the final 7 because TK & Rachel are one of them and all the other ones are confirmed an none of them are Lorena & Jason, so i think KYNT & VYXSIN + TK & RACHEL WILL BE 1ST + 2ND OVERALL

I have to back this up because on a 24-related board, I made a joke that a character's dead body would be thrown into the bad guy's bunker to smoke him out. It was a joke, but because I didn't put a smiley on it, a lot of people took it and ran with it and made it gospel. It was spread to three other boards and the mod told me to make a statement saying it was a joke, but it was too late. Either back up the statement or put a smiley to say you're joking otherwise it's going to spread like wildfire.

Because I am way confused as to which sister is which!

Dark shirt is ? White shirt is?

Because if dark shirt is Marianna--I thought she told Julia to do the Roadblock? But it is dark shirt who seems muddy?

So--who is who and who did the Roadblock?

It is  worse than learning to tell the BQ's apart was! :lol3:

Very brief rundown:

Teams leave Ireland pitstop very early in the morning or rather still in the middle of the night.

Drive to Shannon airport.  Find flight to Amsterdam via Heathrow.  All teams end up on the same flights and arrive in Amsterdam together.  Take the express train (20 minutes) arriving at the Centraal Station.

Find first clue hidden in a rack of bikes.  Pike up bike and go to somewhere on one of the canals, perhaps on the Prinsengracht the Anne Frankhaus.  Pick up clue to the DETOUR.

One task is to life some heavy furniture piece (tv set perhaps) from the street to the upper floor of a canal house using a bock and tackle arrangement.

The second task is unknown (don't think it is to ride over to Amsterdam Nord)  And producers usually keep one detour task completely hidden.

Finishing detour task, teams ride bikes to the ferry across the harbor, Het IJ and then on to Werengouw and a particular apartment building complex.  Receive clue to proceed by bus to the suburb area of Durgerdam, find some sport club and partake of the ROADBLOCK.  One team member must use a pole to vault over and back a water filled ditch.

Completing the task , teams find a bike-cart which one member of the team pumps while the other team member rests in the cart holding their backpacks.

Teams must find a certain Marina, perhaps Marina Muiderzand, find Phil on the banks, and jump upon the mat.

The last team will be eliminated.  Bye-Bye Kate and Pat.

G-man--we identified the marina as being the Durgendam Marina.

And I think we all think the biking alone might be one of the the detours? But I'd like something more exciting myself so we'll see. You know--llike parallel parking next to a canal or something--can't tell you how many drivers end up IN the canals!

And Bus #30, and bakfiets (sp?), and the Apartment!

Only missed going to whatchamacallit bridge to get the clue which is no biggie.

Some interesting jumping around in Amsterdam.  The 5 teams taking part in "Hunt It" actually had to peddle the five miles from the bike parking garage to Buiksloermeer plein; using the ferry across the Het IJ I assume (too bad we had no nice visuals added).  Meanwhile the five teams taking part in "Lift It" had to reach the same location but we have no idea how they got there.  Looks like Kynt and Vyxsin got lost on the way.  I would image taxi, but then the first three cabs all go to a different place than the bikers arrive at.  Oh, well, they all eventually got to the same place in Ransdorp.

And the area where Kynt and Vyxsin are shown running to catch the same bus as the first three teams, is entirely different from either the area for the first bus and for the second bus.

Now if you look closely the first teams at the bus stop - Jason/Lorena; Nathan/Jennifer; Shana/Jennifer were at a different bus stop than we see the others at.  The background is entirely different in the former from the latter.  Also notice that the first bus was no. 015, the second bus was no. 011 and the third bus was 015 again.  But when they show the door closing, all the doors are for a bus no. 453.  So much for accuracy in editing.

I don't have an archived timetable, so this (http://www.gvb.nl/english/travellers/dienstregeling/html/mainframe.php?printversie=true&pttfile=20070923_20071208_Bus_30&prtfile=20070923_20071208_Bus_30_H&lijncode=30&richtingscode=A&geldig1=20070923&geldig2=20071208&edgd=08-12-2007&dagtype=131&regiocode=&richtingid=343&style=1&lijnid=163&toonOmleiding=0) will have to do. The preachers narrowly missed the last regular #30 bus and had to catch the Stadsmobiel (http://www.gvb.nl/english/travellers/products/stadsmobiel.html), a para-van that serves as the nighttime bus for lines 30 and 31. So they finally left for Ransdorp between 7-8 p.m. Sunset for 11 July was 9:59 p.m.

I liked the way they seemed to say that only 12 seats were left on the DUB-AMS flight enough for only 6 teams.  What about the two crew members per team??  The producers very carefully put words in people's mouths to let you think that the camera crews never exist.  Pictures just show up by magic.
Title: Re: EP2: 'I’ve Become the Archie Bunker of the Home'

All the airline personnel are carefully coached in advance to make sure they know how to translate the real number of seats available into the Amazing Race TV number of seats available, which is not more than half the previous number. Once the cameras are rolling and flight times are critical, there is not time for a retake so they have to to get it "right" the first time.

Maybe Tammy can help us here...but I am pretty sure that racers have said in the past that they were asked to use the two tickets phrase and then the cameras would stop and they would clarify the need for extra tickets, and I think racers have talked about also shooting retakes. I think we even once or twice thru the years heard more tickets being asked for?

They sure go to great lengths to maintain that illusion of no cameras though!

One cameraman and one sound person could cover one plane.  The producers could have a camera crew stationed at the arrival airport.  On second thought, this is risky if a team deviates from the expected.
Title: Re: EP2: 'I’ve Become the Archie Bunker of the Home'

As I recall from something I read one time, a camera team (2 persons) sticks with one team throughout one leg.  The teams are switched around after each leg so that no team gets too chummy with the production crew.

And at every stop along the way during the leg the producers have local crews standing by to film a lot of the action not covered by the travelling crews.  Phil also has his own crew that travels with him along with all the production suits who hang around.
