These best friends have been dating on and off for over three years. These purveyors of Goth, pride themselves on keeping Louisville “weird.” In their own hometown Kynt and Vyxsin are very active in their local scene, regularly hosting and acting as emcee at rock shows and club nights. The most difficult part of the Race will undoubtedly be keeping up their daily "make up" routine. Between the two of them, Kynt and Vyxsin have collectively had their hair dyed 18 different colors. Fashion is a passion for these two.
Vyxsin claims that the biggest difference between the two is that she is very emotional while he is more reserved. She has been trying to get him to open up more and express his true feelings, to which she claims she’s having success. Vyxsin describes herself as compassionate and theatrical and she works as a waiter at Ramsi's Cafe.
Kynt is a waiter at the Texas Roadhouse Restaurant. Kynt describes himself as abstract, atypical and avant-garde He claims that the biggest difference between the two is that Vyxsin is more emotional while Kynt is more sarcastic. Both have also worked as receptionists at a local hair salon for several years.
Together, they enjoy shopping, dancing and doing each other’s hair/makeup. Besides a mirror Kynt and Vyxsin's favorite thing to stare into is their computer monitor as both are admittedly MySpace-addicts. Additionally, they both enjoy roadtripping to Sci-Fi conventions across the country where as Kynt puts it, “They feel right at home surrounded by Storm Troopers and Wookies.” Both have a dream of someday attending the Wave-Gotik-Treffen in Leipzig, Germany, which is the largest Goth/industrial music festival in the world.
Representing the “Goth” community in Louisville has embedded a strong sense of “us against the world” mentality in these two Racers. Therefore, don’t look for them to fall apart when the chips are down, a trait that will undoubtedly be tested on the Race

Louisville couple to compete on new season of ‘Amazing Race’

A Louisville couple will compete on the 12th season of The Amazing Race. CBS’s hit reality competition show will pit Kynt Cothron, 31, and Vyxsin Fiala, 29, against 10 other teams as they race around the world.
CBS describes Cothron and Fiala as “dating Goths” who work as servers and hair salon receptionists with an “‘us against the world’ mentality.”
The Louisville couple will be running in the path laid by David and Mary Conley, a coal miner and homemaker from Pike County. The Conleys became viewer favorites during the 10th and 11th seasons of the show.
Before that, Central Kentucky father-and-son Dennis and Andrew Hyde competed on the third season of the show, in 2002.
The new season of The Amazing Race debuts at 8 p.m. Nov. 4 on CBS.

We've got a fun story about Kynt Cothran and Vyxsin Fiala, two competing in the 12th edition of CBS' "Amazing Race" Sunday. Fiala is from Louisville, but her parents, Frank and Kay, live in Huntsville.
The duo is very colorful, fun and from the Goth culture. Here's a little more about them.
So, how did Fiala and Cothran wind up in the Goth culture? Fiala said she grew up in a military family moving around the country - she never lived in Huntsville but loves it here and visits often - and always felt out of place.
"My dad was in the Army and we were always moving and I was always the new kid," Fiala said. "We'd get settled, then up and go, and I think I always had the feeling of being isolated and not belonging.
"I tried hard to fit in. I tried so hard for years and years, and at one point I decided I could fit into a mode of thinking and dressing a certain way, which isn't me, or celebrate the fact I'm a little different and play with it and be myself. The Goth scene is a great environment for me. The fact it doesn't quite make sense makes sense."\
Cothran adds playfully: We're from 'The Island of Misfit Toys.' You know, from 'Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer Movie.' Goth is an environment that promotes art creativity, individuality and being yourself. Some follow more to the cliche and wear all black, but if you've seen the photos from the show, we gravitate toward hot pink."
Cothran signed the two up for the show and both had a blast doing it. How did they do? You'll have to stay tuned.
"It's one of the few TV shows that hold my ADHD since it's fast-paced," Cothran said. "Every episode they're rushing to different nations, taking on challenges. On one hand, it's reality show; on the other it's National Geographic scenery. We're both traveling and road trip junkies and hop in the car and go anywhere."

Army artillery officer dad helps Goth pair train
A few months ago, two cast members from this season's popular CBS show "The Amazing Race" sneaked into Huntsville and trained secretly for the globe-trotting scavenger hunt with the $1 million prize.
Frank and Kay Fiala of Huntsville welcomed their daughter, Vyxsin, and her best friend, Kynt Cothran, both 24 and residents of Louisville, Ky. Frank Fiala, an artillery officer in the Army, took over.
It was time for boot camp - "The Amazing Race" version.
"He had us running and doing pushups and even rappelling," Vyxsin said in a phone interview this week. "He helped us get ready mentally and physically."
"Yeah, I think the boot camp is definitely going to help us," Cothran said. "The only workout I'd ever had was on the dance floor. Vyxsin also took me camping, and I know this will be a shock to you, but I'm not much of an outdoorsman. It was quite traumatic ɠhave you ever tried to apply eye mascara in a pup tent?"
Did we mention they're the only Goth duo in the race? They won't be hard to spot: Look for the pretty girl with the hot pink hair, pink leopard-print shirt and black lips and the guy with the same makeup/lipstick/shirt who looks a little like a younger Marilyn Manson.
"Going into the race, as we prepared, we talked about it - how the aesthetics of Goth is going to be an advantage for us," Cothran said. "It's going to work for us because the other teams are going to underestimate us from the time we arrive and won't realize how lethal we are until we're miles - and days - ahead of them.
"The people that inhabit the different countries are going to wonder who we are, and I think that will be an advantage," he said. "They'll find out we're colorful. We're fun. We're friendly. We're social people. It will get us noticed, and they'll want to give us a hand."
And what do Fiala's mom and dad think of seeing their daughter on national TV?
"We've been excited for a long time and really, really looking forward to seeing her on Sunday," said her mom, Kay Fiala, who with her husband has lived here a year and a half after moving from Marquette, Mich. "They came down here, and we do a lot of camping, so we tried to help them have as many experiences to prepare them for the race as possible."
What about the eccentric Goth persona?
"My daughter is a very creative and intelligent person and has been since she was little," her mom said. "She's been in theater and done some directing; she's multi-talented. So, we just understand that as part of the person she is, and we celebrate her God-given gifts that are fun."
The duo met in Louisville a couple of years ago when Cothran was handing out band fliers. Fiala says their relationship "is complicated" - borrowing a line from facebook.com - varying from "romantic, my soul mate, best friend and favorite person." It was Cothran who suggested they apply for the show.
Fiala says "Amazing Race" is the coolest thing she's ever done because "it was with her favorite person in the world." There was, however, one downside.
"One of the funniest things I've experienced with Kynt was our struggle over packing," Fiala said. "We have history, and for one day we usually pack four suitcases and a trunk of shoes.
"So, as we packed, we decided we were only going to bring one backpack each. And in those two backpacks, we have brought 17 compacts of face powder. We also packed one flat iron we're going to share.
"It's really been a struggle. We've tried to find a place where fashion intersects with function."

This week we had the opportunity to speak with Kynt & Vyxsin, the first ever Goth team racing around the world for 1 million dollars. We talked about what prompted them to apply, if they were able to keep up their appearance, and a bit abut the Goth lifestyle. I would like to thank them both for taking the time to chat with us. Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: How did you both meet one another and how long have you been friends?
A. Vyxsin – It’s funny I met Kynt shortly after I moved to Louisville, he handed me a flyer for a local Goth night. Within a short amount of time we were close friends.
A. Kynt: It’s been a three year one night stand.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: What initially got you both interested in being on the show, did you watch prior seasons?
A. Kynt: I have been a fan since season one, Vyxsin started watching The Amazing Race during season three. It’s one of a few shows that can hold my attention span. Some shows are just about twelve people in a house with gossip and drama. With The Amazing Race you get interpersonal communication, you learn, travel, and grow as a person.
Q. Mark Realitywanted.com: I read somewhere you did not want to emulate any prior team. But did you have a favorite past team or team you rooted for?
A. Vyxsin: I always liked Lynn and Alex even though they did not win. I loved the dynamics they had with one another and they didn’t let the race hurt it. We also loved Uchenna & Joyce, they had one of the most exciting endings. We also loved Steve and Dave from season 4, they came from behind so many times.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: I don’t know how long you both were gone but I am sure it was several weeks during filming. What did you guys leave behind?
A. Kynt: I missed Myspace. I missed my full make up box, heater, and air conditioning.
A. Vyxsin: I have a small tiny Pomeranian at home. She is my child. It was hard to leave her behind. One of the things I did not miss while I was away was waiting tables.Q. Mark Realitywanted.com: Not too many of us miss our job when we leave right. I’ve watched The Amazing Race and wondered if teams try to do any type of preparation prior top the show. Did you guys read world maps, workout more, or prepare in anyway?
A. Vyxsin: We tried to get ourselves in a more physical mindset. As viewers have seen many of the amazing race casts are the outdoor sporty types. Kynt and I don’t spend much time doing those things, though we did some physical prep work prior to leaving for the show.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: Did you guys start running or hiking?
A. Vyxsin: We actually spent time with my dad. My dad was in the army and ran Kynt and I through some army training drills, obstacle courses, rock climbing, repelling, etc.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: Wow, very cool that your dad helped you both out. I know you can’t tell me now but I am sure we will see how it helped you guys during the show.
A. Vyxsin: It was great to have that preparation. We actually took Kynt camping for the first time. It helped my dad and Kynt bond since my dad was wary of Kynt. Training helped bring them closer together and it was also great for Kynt and I. The whole time we have been together we have not done normal couple stuff like biking or walking in the park. It was great to connect in another way.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: As you both know this show can test relationships. I have run into past cast members at reality events that are no loner together. Were you worried about your relationship with one another?
A. Kynt: We see so many teams waste energy, time, and effort bickering at one another and not saving their energy for the road blocks and detours. We have always worked great together under some stressful circumstances.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: You guys have a ton of online support, how do you feel about the online reality TV community, Myspace, etc?
A. Kynt: It’s so exciting, the show inspires us. It’s a wonderful feeling that we will be part of something that gets people excited and enthused. The support online has been heart warming. A single episode hasn’t aired yet and people are already sending messages saying “go pink and black”.
A. Vyxsin: For some people it’s refreshing to see a totally different type of person portrayed on TV. It’s hard for people to identify with the tan blond thin people we often see on shows. A huge part of America doesn’t look like that.
A. Kynt: We are here to break the stereotypical walls down. Vyxsin and I are SHOCKED! We never expected such support so soon.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: What is your favorite thing about the Amazing Race?
A. Vyxsin: Most reality TV shows show a bunch of individuals doing what they do. With The Amazing Race you do it with a teammate. I had a great adventure and a life alerting experience that I was able to share with my most favorite person in the world.
A. Kynt: My favorite part of The Amazing Race is the spirit behind that concept. Superficially it’s a race for a million dollars but its so much more than that, it’s a window into the world we live in.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: Tell me a little bit about your Goth lifestyle and is there anything you can say about any reactions you may have received from people while filming the show?
A. Kynt: Going into the race we thought a lot about it and how it would be part of our strategy. We were assuming our look would work in our favor since strangers always come up to us wondering if we are in a band and so on. We assumed when looking for help with directions people would be curios about us and give us help.
A. Vyxsin: We also thought other teams would under estimate Kynt and I. We hope this will keep a target off our back.
A. Kynt: I want other teams to look at us and go oh gosh look at them those two are more worried about eye liner vs. an upcoming road block.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: What are the biggest misconceptions people have about those in the Goth lifestyle?
A. Kynt: People think Goths are depressed and anti social basement dwellers. It’s so wrong since we love to meet new people everyday. Goth people are insightful, intelligent, and just plain fun. Goth celebrates art, beauty, and individuality. It’s always fun to play in the dark.
A. Vyxsin: Growing up in an Army family we traveled a lot when I was younger. I tried my whole life to fit in, but for some reason I could not get there by wearing the right clothes or saying the right things. I was alienated and lonely. I kept trying new looks and things but finally I accepted the fact I am different and now I am much happier.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: Were you able to keep up the look while on the race?
A. Kynt: Going into the race Vyxsin and I wanted to keep the look as much as possible. When we are dressed and have our makeup on we feel the most confident. But we knew we might not look prefect at every moment. We were trying to find a fine line with function and fashion.
Q. Mark RealityWanted.com: So you referred a few times to your relationship with one another. Are you two dating, friends….?
A. Vyxsin: Kent and I have great relationship, we dated on and off but Kynt doesn’t like labels. He always says labels are for soup cans. It cuts down on drama; we like to just enjoy eachothers company. He is my soul mate and always gives me a twinkle in my eye.
Q. Mark realitywanted.com: Any final words for the fans?
A. Vyxsin: We have an extreme amount of appreciation from the overwhelming online support. We’re not the only ones out there that have a different take on life.
A. Kynt: We are grateful that CBS keeps backing The Amazing Race year after year. It is quality TV. There is a lot of junk on air today but Vyxen and I know 30 years from now when we are in a nursing home trying to die our grey hair we will both be proud of doing the show.
A. Vyxsin: We look forward to seeing the episode air and hearing people’s feedback. We want people to post their thoughts of show.

without the fast editing, cool music, and challenges, the other teams didn't seem so......cool. honestly they all seemed boring, self-obsessed, and extremely repetitive.

kynt and vyxsin sparkle like the glitter in their makeup.
they seem cool and comfortable, even without cool editing and music. the other teams can't say the same......

Of all the Buddy TV Interviews I have seen so far, I think this team has come out the other side of that the absolute best! They were funny, charming and sincere--and I wish them both a great ride!

I can hardly believe it, but I absolutely agree. Kynt and Vyxsin are my favorite team. They are so refreshingly down to earth, clearly not mactors in any way. I don't know if they are real Goths, but who cares? The scene in Webclips where Kynt sneaks the can of makeup back in the bag is priceless. I think they look really good with minimal makeup, but I guess Ireland is the last time we will see that. I think they will go a long way in this competition.

The second leg of this year's "Amazing Race" on CBS went to Amsterdam and the team with Huntsville ties, Vyxsin and Kynt, continued to be amazing, finishing fourth.
Vyxsin Fiala's parents live in Huntsville while Vyxsin and her buddy, Kynt Cothran, live in Louisville. Lorena and Jason won and the married minsters, Kate and Pat, became the second team eliminated. Jennifer and Nathan were second and Shana and Jennifer third.
We also got a nice note from Vyxsin's mom, Kay Fiala, this week. She mentioned that we had a discrepancy in the ages of the two. Well, Kay, Kynt sent us an email that said they were both 24. That little stinker. Thanks for updating and telling us Kynt is 31 and Vyxsin is 29.

Thanks for the YouTube link. In the real world I have nothing in common with these two, but for some reason I find them so entertaining. Somehow I wish they would race without their makeup because it acts as a mask and hides their facial expressions.

georgiapeach, maybe next season. I need to get my passion back. I'm still kind of disappointed in the race. I thought Bertram, the executive producer, was Dutch. I was kind of hoping of seeing such sights as the Anne Frank house, an museum filled with paintings by Dutch Masters, windmills, or possibly having a food challenge eating cheese in Gouda or Edam. One of the things I enjoyed while googling in the past was learning about the sights and cultures of a foreign land in addition to doing detective work. While funny at times, pole vaulting over a drainage ditch isn't very cultural to me.
I appreciate all the work you did on Pirate Master. I would have participated but once the show went to the web, my schedule just didn't allow it. It's so ironic to me that I felt Pirate Master only got good after it was canceled. The smaller cast allowed for much needed character development to overcome the repetitive competitions.
It also didn't hurt to see Captain Christa in her Captain's jacket a lot of the time. :-[

My favorite thing too is researching the locations. And I wonder if they didn't cover the things you mentioned in Holland because those are almost stereotypes for "typical Dutch" and they wanted to do something different. But I believe we will see some cultural nods in some of our more exotic locations this season--sure you don't want to be spoiled? We could use some more help--and you're missing out on the fun! :hugs:

The ones that were rude to the kids Peach were Fran and Barry. Billy tried to shake his hand and he totally dissed him with his hand held out and everything. I tried to be nice and make small talk saying how I lived near them at one time and wasn't it cool that some people(Terry -Survivor, us) from Connecticut finally made it on a reality show and they said they moved now and don't watch reality TV and walked away right in the middle of my convo. You are right, lastgazeebo, they are the ONLY ENGAGING TEAM.
They get along very well, work together, take their time figuring things out. They seem relaxed and their interaction is positive. I'm quite surprised b/c I expected them to be the opposite! But they take things in stride & don't get all excited if things don't go their way.
Only thing that bothers me is if they are TOO relaxed, will it go against them? And the other teams forge ahead and the Goths lose? I wish they'd step it up a bit more...but maybe I'm worrying too much! :cmas11

The Gothtuckians' amazing race came to an end Sunday night.
Kynt Cothron and Vyxsin Fiala, the Louisville couple who stood out from their competitors on the CBS reality competition The Amazing Race because of their Goth style, were eliminated from the show after coming in last among the five remaining teams.
Bad luck appeared to haunt them through the entire leg, which took them from Italy to Mumbai, India. After starting the leg in last place, they were forced to perform a task that the other teams were allowed to skip because of a twist in the game's rules, but their fate was sealed when Cothron misunderstood a task's directions and was forced to backtrack, allowing another team to advance farther ahead of he and Fiala.
The couple did have one consolation, though: Host Phil Keoghan called the couple, who were fond of bold makeup and pink and black clothing, the most fashionable team in the show's 12 seasons. :jam:

Goth couple Kynt Cothron and Vyxsin Fiala were eliminated in Mumbai, India, after encountering two new race twists: the U-Turn and Speed Bump, the CBS reality show's new penalty for teams spared removal during non-elimination legs.
Cothron and Fiala previously came in last place on "The Amazing Race" but weren't eliminated. While the flashy team easily overcame the yoga-posing Speed Bump challenge, they made their biggest blunder with the race's second U-Turn, which allows one team to force another team to backtrack during the race.
"We don't see what you see at home," Fiala said during a telephone interview Wednesday. "You're omnipotent. We really don't know where other teams are during the race."
That's why Cothron and Fiala failed to target dating couple Nathan Hagstrom and Jennifer Parker - the only team trailing the goth couple from Louisville, Ky. - with the U-Turn.
"From our vantage point, they were the one team ahead of us," Cothron said.
Cothron and Fiala weren't able to catch up to Hagstrom and Parker, the bickering dating couple from California who have referred to Cothron and Fiala as "freaks" and claimed they had "witch powers" during the race.
"Anyone who looks different is probably used to getting called names," Fiala said. "I can't say that's the first time Kynt or I have been called something cruel based on our appearance. To be honest, those are hardly the worst things we've been called."
The team says their flamboyant pink-and-black attire didn't deter them during their time on the competitive reality series. In fact, Cothron believes their ostentatiousness was an asset.
"We never had trouble getting information or directions," says Cothron. "Although our look is definitely different, there's nothing intimidating about us. We're very friendly people. We love having conversations with complete strangers."
Cothron and Fiala estimate they spent about a half-hour getting dolled before the beginning of each leg.
"I think I was the first person on 'The Amazing Race' to pack a flat iron," Cothron said.

Kynt: The Amazing Race has always been a favorite show of ours. It's one of the few programs on television that can hold our ADD attention span. Vyxsin and I thought it would be a perfect fit for us. We both love to travel -- we get severely claustrophobic if we stay in one place for too long. We're road-trip junkies. We're very adept to traveling on the fly. A lot of times I'll find out about a music festival or a sci-fi convention and I'll call Vyxsin up and be like, "We've got to jump in the car and go! Let's do it!" So we're accustomed to that type of frantic travel.
Reality TV World: So was it your first time applying for the show?
Kynt: Yep. It was our first time.

Kynt: Oh absolutely!

Vyxsin: No. One nice thing about Louisville is that it's pretty centrally located, so you can drive a reasonable distance to be in a Chicago or Detroit or Atlanta. We like to drive and go to conventions, like Goth conventions and fantasy, sci-fi stuff. But I haven't been out of the country as an adult, so we never traveled together internationally.
Kynt: And we don't know any foreign languages...
Vyxsin: (laughing) I dabble in a few. I kind of get by. But we're not fluent in any other languages.
Kynt: Yeah, we're definitely not multilingual world travelers.
Reality TV World: Would you say you formed any alliances with any of the other teams? Was there anybody you really butted heads with during the race?
Kynt: Not particularly. We didn't form an formal alliances per say. But we were always willing to trade information here or there for mutual benefit. This race is so fast-paced and erratic, and we all pulled in different directions that it really is hard to have a true alliance in the sense of what you see on these other reality TV shows where these people are with one another.
Reality TV World: Was there anybody you tried to avoid sharing information with?
Kynt: Not really. If we were bunched up with another team at any given moment and there was a chance to help one another out, we were always willing.
Reality TV World: During last week's episode, how did you get lost after you had to take the detour due to the traffic in Bolognia? Were you aware of how much extra time the detour would add to your trip?
Vyxsin: Basically when we got the initial directions, the most obvious route between where we started [Ancona] and where we were headed [Empoli] was a straight line. The straight line was the route we ended up taking, except in reality there's a mountain road that was pretty much completely vertical the entire time (laughing). It took about six-times as long as the more circuitous route that was the highway that was blocked [in Bolognia].
Reality TV World: I see.
Vyxsin: We knew where we were going. It just took tiny hairpin turns on...
Kynt: We had to drive much slower...
Vyxsin: ... a single-lane mountain road. Yeah. I was driving probably 20MPH...
Kynt: Or else the car would flip over a guardrail! (Vyxsin laughing)
Reality TV World: So how much time would say that added to your trip?
Vyxsin: I was driving all night long. We didn't get anywhere near [Empoli] until way after dawn... Reality TV World: So when you arrived at the "Search from Ultralight" Roadblock in Empoli, were you surprised to see "Newly Dating Couple" Rachel Rosales and TK Erwin still there trying to finish it?
Vyxsin: We were shocked seeing another team. We thought for sure they'd be hours ahead of us.
Reality TV World: Once you reached the subsequent "Invention" Detour task, why did you immediately decide to switch to "Tradition" without even attempting "Invention?" Did it really look that difficult?
Kynt: Oh yeah, it looked tough...
Vyxsin: We thought initially to do "Invention" because we were right there and the task was right there, so we wouldn't have had to travel at all. But upon looking at it, knowing how tired -- because at that point, we had both been up for probably 35, 36 hours. We said, "Oh, Invention's a great idea!" Then we took one look at it and we said, "This is a terrible idea! (laughing) Da Vinci was a genius. We are not. Let's go." It didn't take a lot of deliberation for us to realize we just weren't up to it mentally.
Reality TV World: Seeing as how it's hurt other teams in previous seasons, Kynt why didn't you learn how to drive a stick shift prior to leaving for the race?
Kynt: Vyxsin has a stick-shift car, so before we were going on the race I definitely took some time to drive the thing around, try to get somewhat comfortable with it. But sticks can be cranky. They can turn on you! I don't think they're the safest way to drive a car to be honest. I think they're kind of antiquated. You know we don't use those cars anymore that you wind up?
Reality TV World: Yep.
Kynt: That's what people were using in the 1800s. Stick shifts... they're a dinosaur (laughing).
Reality TV World: Did you ever learn what happened to your damaged vehicle on the way to the "Tradition" Detour challenge? Was it the gears?
Kynt: Yeah, we never found out exactly what happened but it would not go into gear. Reverse, first-gear, second-gear... Nothing.
Reality TV World: About how far did you have to go on foot after your vehicle broke down?
Kynt: Couple miles. We thought instead of standing there about the car -- hoping a replacement comes -- just leave it for dead and run.
Reality TV World: Did you really finish over an hour behind TK and Rachel were you in reaching the non-elimination Pit Stop? Because the editing really seemed to go out of its way to make it seem like you guys were a lot closer.
Kynt: No more than an hour behind them. Even after all that terrible stuff, we still weren't that far behind the fourth-place team.
Vyxsin: [TK and Rachel] had the thing where they forgot the clue and then they had a flat tire on the way to the Pit Stop.
Reality TV World: Okay, so what you're saying is if it hadn't been for those things you would have finished even farther behind them.
Vyxsin: We weren't super-far behind them...
Kynt: We almost got them. Reality TV World: Did you suspect that the leg might be a non-elimination leg or did you think your race was over?
Kynt: We thought it was over. Yeah, we thought, "This is it." [Host Phil Keoghan] said, "You're the last team to arrive..." It was like, "We're gone dude."
Reality TV World: Before the race began, Phil had told all the racers that there'd be 11 legs and only eight elimination Pit Stops, so with only five teams left in the Race, you had to figure the odds that the Race's first non-elimination Pit Stop was coming up were pretty good, right?
Kynt: We weren't for sure. We were hoping, but we weren't for sure. We were hoping, but there's no 100% they're going to show up. There hadn't been any in the race so far... As in the past [seasons], there's Superlegs, multiple-day legs, multi-nation legs... We didn't know what was going to happen.
Reality TV World: What was your reaction when Phil explained the Speed Bump penalty to you?
Vyxsin: We were thrilled that they weren't going to take our stuff! (laughing)
Kynt: Yeah, we were thrilled that we weren't getting mugged.
Reality TV World: So I'm assuming you preferred the new Speed Bump task over the old "nothing but the clothes on your back, go beg for money" penalty?
Vyxsin: Oh yeah...
Kynt: Oh yeah...
Reality TV World: Were you confident you'd be able to overcome the Speed Bump penalty?
Kynt: We went into it with the most positive spirit that we could. We had no idea what the Speed Bump would be; when it would rear its ugly head; how involving or not involving it would be. We had no idea on that.
One of the things that causes one to lose so much time on the Speed Bump isn't just the task itself, but the travel time to and from the task. Keep in mind, when we found the Speed Bump sign, the challenge wasn't right there next to the sign. We had to find another completely separate destination no other team had to go to, drive all the way there, then tackle the challenge, then drive all the way back to where the original Speed Bump sign was in order to find our next clue. So it's not just the task itself, it's the travel time that one loses as well that makes it particularly brutal.
Reality TV World: About how much time did it take you to complete the Speed Bump and return to the Detour?
Kynt: The Speed Bump itself, one had to be very patient while doing it because you couldn't make it go faster. It's not like build a little house out of blocks and then run away. We were completely at the mercy of the Yoga instructor -- how many poses he wanted, how fast he wanted us to go, how to keep up with him and not make any mistakes. Even if we did every Yoga pose perfectly, there was still a finite amount of time the task would entail that you could not make any shorter. As far as the total time it took us -- with the travel time included -- we lost at least 30-40 minutes.
Reality TV World: Just to back-up before the Speed Bump, you were the first team to arrive in Mumbai. Was it disappointing to learn that since the newspaper stand didn't open until 6AM, all the other teams would be able to catch-up and thus negate your lead?
Kynt: Oh yeah, because we needed every little bit of time that we could get. It was so sad because with the newspaper stand opening at 6AM, everybody was caught up. There was no chance for us to gain any time on that leg anymore.
Reality TV World: Then it looked like your taxi driver got lost on the way to the tailor shop from the newspaper stand. Is that what happened there?
Kynt: He took us to the completely wrong place. The clue said, "Go to Saint Andrews Street," or something. He took us to Saint Andrews Road, which is a completely different place...
Vyxsin: He took us to an actual church called Saint Andrews I think or something like that. It was some kind of crazy... Actually that leg was really challenging because everything that we had to do was get into a little cab and ride in the cab to the next destination... Mumbai is huge! These place that we were going to, a lot of them were not big, huge, enormous landmarks. They were these tiny little locations. Pretty much every single time we got in a cab, we'd say, "Take us to this place." They'd say, "Oh! Of course!" Then they'd start pulling over and asking other cab drivers or stopping the cab and getting out and going into businesses and asking people...
Kynt: A lot of times we would get out of the car to ask directions for the driver! (laughing)
Vyxsin: We were sort of at the mercy of that. There's not a whole lot one can really do -- really -- because he either knows or he's not going to know...Kynt: That's the nature of every Amazing Race.
Vyxsin: Absolutely true.
Kynt: The Race is always 50/50... They're always equal partners. You have to be a good player to win the game, but you also have to have some good luck on your side no matter how strong of a team that you are. Again, it was a heart wrenching moment because we killed off the newspaper challenge quicker than anybody. We were the first team to find [the ad], and it took some of the other teams considerable time after us. The [cab driver] took us... Oh man, it was at least 15 or 20 miles in the wrong direction.
Vyxsin: And when we...
Kynt: When we got there he tried to leave us! He tried to speed away, I was like, "Don't leave buddy..."
Vyxsin: "This is not the right place!"
Reality TV World: After all that -- you completed the Speed Bump task -- were you surprised to find "Dating Couple" Jennifer Parker and Nathan Hagstrom still working on the "Thread 'Em" Detour task?
Vyxsin: It was totally a shock.
Kynt: They were the only team throughout the entire leg that we made visual contact with.
Reality TV World: How long did it take you to finish the Detour challenge after Nathan and Jen left?
Kynt: About 10 minutes I'd say. After they left, we still had to get more flowers on the strong. We were actually working -- you couldn't tell this on TV -- but we were actually working on two separate strings. [Vyxsin] did hers and I did mine, then we had to tie them together and make sure it was sturdy enough to not fall apart as we ran the thing to the groom, then find the groom and turn it in. Again, there's only so much TV time. A lot of time, things look like they're happening simultaneously because they're having to show what everybody's doing. They can't waste 10 minutes of TV time showing Kynt and Vyxsin tying a flower garland together and holding it up in the air to make sure it's staying in place.
Reality TV World: You just mentioned Nathan and Jen were the only other team you made visual contact with after leaving the newspaper stand, so why did you decide to use the U-Turn on "Grandfather/Grandson" team Donald Jerousek and Nicolas Fulks instead of Nathan and Jen?
Kynt: Because [Nathan and Jen] were ahead of us.
Vyxsin: The visual contact we had with them was seeing them at the flower stand and seeing them leave ahead of us. So in our minds this is the only team we've seen, and the only team we've seen is ahead of us. It's tricky watching it, because watching it...
Kynt: It seems obvious!
Vyxsin: ... You're sort of third-person omniscient, and you can kind of see what everyone's doing and where everyone is. It's totally obvious what's happening. But all that we knew is we did ["Thread 'Em"] and they did ["Thread 'Em"], well we were thinking maybe the other teams did "Paste 'Em," and "Paste 'Em" was really difficult or really far away, maybe it's just taking everyone a really long time.
Because it seemed unlikely that -- given we had done the Speed Bump -- any teams at all would be behind us. We just didn't see them, why would any teams be behind us? But from our point of view, we thought it was extremely unlikely that three teams had come in-front of us and none of them had decided to use the U-Turn. That seemed unimaginable.
Reality TV World: That's a fair point.
Vyxsin: It's Final 5, it just seems like there's not a lot of time to spare.
Reality TV World: And it was the course's final U-Turn opportunity.
Vyxsin: And it's the last U-Turn, so nobody can get you back later. We thought even if they didn't want to U-Turn us, maybe they would U-Turn a different team -- a more competitive team -- if they thought we were completely knocked out of the game anyway because of the Speed Bump. But at the very least, I would have thought they would have U-Turned us just to ensure -- knowing that we were already behind -- that we were completely knocked out of the game, that way if anything bad happened to them, like if their cab breaks down or they have a challenge that doesn't go well... We've seen in past legs of the race, we didn't know what was coming next or what was expected of us. You can get one challenge that doesn't go right, you can sit there for six hours...
Reality TV World: So just to be clear, the decision to use the U-Turn on Nick and Don was a mutual decision?
Kynt: Yeah, when we finally decided we'd sticker a face up, we actually took all of them out of the box. We held them up together, and we were like, "Who can we eliminate?" Nate and Jen passed us, so we can put them back in the box. Here's the other three teams. We just had to guess which one of them is the most likely to be behind. It was a guess. But if you look at the odds -- mathematical odds -- was it a safe assumption that three teams passed the U-Turn and didn't use it, or one team passed the U-Turn and didn't use it? We thought maybe one team -- maybe Nate and Jen are in first place, they just blitzed passed the sign and didn't even think to use it...
Vyxsin: Because when we saw them at the flower challenge, they seemed kind of... a little bit stressed out. So we could totally see them running past and not even really...
Kynt: Right! And they're always wanting so badly to be in first. They seemed stressed, we thought they might have just run up, disagreed on who to U-Turn and ran away.
Reality TV World: What was your reaction when you saw Nathan and Jen arrive at the Roadblock task, meaning they were in fact behind you the whole time?
Kynt: If you watch Nate and Jen's reaction, they get to the U-Turn and they see that we've got a sticker up there, even they said, "How in the heck did Kynt and Vyxsin get here?!" Because they know in their heads they left that flower challenge 10 minutes before us. If you go back and watch, you see Kynt and Vyxsin aren't as stupid as they think because Nate and Jen are like, "They're ahead of us? What the hell? We left them way behind!" The U-Turn destination was also fairly close to that flower challenge. There wasn't a lot of room to get lost.
Vyxsin: You're right. At that moment when we were at the Roadblock and we saw them running up, that was that sinking feeling of, "Oh! D' oh!" (laughing) That's when you knock yourself in the head and you say, "Oh no!" That's when you know. But at that point, all we could do was the best we could with whatever was left of the leg.
Reality TV World: So when you got to that Roadblock did you ever learn the other three teams were ahead of you?
Kynt: We still had no idea where they were... We still had no contact or info where the proximity was of the other three teams...
Vyxsin: We were sort of suspecting that they were all ahead of us...
Kynt: I never lost it though, I never gave up.
Reality TV World: So Vyxsin you just commented you were left to do your best on the rest of the leg and see what happens. What do you think went wrong with that Roadblock Kynt? Was it your initial problem locating the bike's brake? Why were you so sure that the folks you were delivering those Roadblock task propone tanks to were supposed to keep the initial order slips you'd been given?
Kynt: At first I did have difficulty with the bike. I didn't understand where the brake was because it was in an unusual location (laughing). And I don't do a lot of biking in life. But I got my propane tanks there effectively; I was a little confused about the receipt situation. But again, if you watch the footage, I'm not the only one that has that confusion. You'll see one of the propane-tank recipients correct at least one other racer and tell them, "You forgot something."
Reality TV World: So you misread the clue instructions?
Kynt: I mean, I've actually worked in delivery service before. Whenever you deliver a package to someone, the recipient gets the receipt and the delivery gets a receipt, which is exactly what I did. I took the receipt that they had, had them sign it, and then gave them the other. I didn't realize that I needed to have both of them.
Reality TV World: How much time did it cost you to run back to the two apartments and retrieve the two order slips you'd left behind?
Kynt: Yeah, it took a few minutes because I had to find those spots again. At least this time I knew basically where they were, but I had to run around these blocks, up the stairs in each place. That lost some time. It was just my error of misunderstanding one of the idiosyncrasies of the task -- which can happen -- because what you receive in The Amazing Race is a clue. You don't get detailed directions, you get a clue. And the clues sometimes are kind of like riddles (laughing). That's part of the challenge of the game. It's not black and white. You have to interpret.
Reality TV World: How far behind Nathan and Jen were you in reaching the Pit Stop?
Kynt: We were just a matter of minutes behind the fourth-place team sadly...
Reality TV World: Any regrets about your last leg? Do you think you'd still be racing if you'd either U-Turned the right team or not lost that additional time going back for the Roadblock order slips?
Kynt: That's a tough question, but it's like everybody's had these moments in life. When you're in school and you get your test back, you're like, "Why did I mark answer A? I knew it was B!"
Vyxsin: Really, honestly, we talk about it a lot. Other than the 11 -- and soon to be 12 teams -- who have won The Amazing Race, every other team who has ever participated sits at home and goes (in unison with Kynt), "Oh! I shoulda, woulda, coulda!" You know, that one deciding moment that knocks you out of the game. For us honestly, yes it would have been really wonderful to win the $1 million... But our overall attitude and reaction to everything is just so positive. we just feel so fortunate that we got to have this incredibly experience and share it with each other and meet all these wonderful people; go to these places that we never could have visited on our own...
Kynt: When we think about The Amazing Race, we tend to focus on what we did right, not what we did wrong. As we mentioned, every team comes home with a, "I shoulda, woulda, coulda," story. Everybody has one thing they did wrong and it got them eliminated. Ours was a little bit more overtly dramatic than most people because everybody's like, "The U-Turn!" You know, we Gothed-up the U-Turn! (laughing)
Reality TV World: Some of the other teams took to calling you two "the Pinkies." Do you think your look caused other teams to underestimate you? Was that part of your strategy? Did it work to your advantage?
Kynt: Oh yeah, our Goth aestetic definitely worked to our advantage. We knew other teams would underestimate us from Day 1, and they definitely did. They didn't realize how lethal we really were until they saw us coming in second place several times. So it was definitely part of our strategy.
Plus, when we look our best, we play our best. We feel our most comfortable when we're dressed up, and people were like, "Why would they go through all that trouble when they're on The Amazing Race?" But the fact of the matter is, it's a confidence boost. We feel our most positive. We're prissy but we're punk.
Reality TV World: How was your appearance met by the locals you encountered? Was it ever a hindrance for you?
Vyxsin: People were actually really wonderful to us. I know Kynt and I look probably different than some people have seen people look before (laughing), but I can't say that we're terribly intimidating. I think that our aesthetic is fun and colorful and sort of looks like little cartoons or something. People were very friendly, very open, very willing and patient to help us. We felt really fortunate.
Reality TV World: When we talked to Hendekia Azene two weeks ago, she accused you two of pretending to be sweet and caring and instead characterized you as liars. Did you sense that hostility during the race?
Kynt: No, I never sensed that at all. You've seen the show, and you've seen the footage, and I don't think there's any footage to justify that comment.
Reality TV World: Why did you two call Sequesterville after your elimination? Is that because you went straight to the finish line location instead?
Kynt: Yeah we didn't go to Sequesterville. We were just sent to the end destination, which you will find out about soon. Reality TV World: Was there any team you wanted to see win the $1 million prize? Anybody you didn't want to see win?
Kynt: We wish them all the best of luck. They beat us fair and square. They earned their spot. They earned their positions. So, there's nobody we don't want to see win per say. We wouldn't mind seeing gramps [Don] take the win (laughing). It'd be nice to see an older guy that's been though as much as he has take the cake. TK and Rachel are nice also. We wish them all the best of luck.
Reality TV World: Can you explain a little bit about your first names? Are Kynt and Vyxsin your birth names? If not, have you legally changed them?
Kynt: (laughing)
Vyxsin: Vyxsin is a nickname.
Reality TV World: What about you Kynt?
Kynt: Yep, that's my name...
Reality TV World: So what's next for you two? Back to being "Goth kids" from Louisville, KY?
Kynt: The year 2008 is a big, big question mark at this point. But I can tell you, we've never been more excited about what lies ahead in our lives. We don't know where things are going to take us, but we're ready to jump on a plane at a moment's notice (laughing) if something does come up. This adventure might be over but the pink and black attack will never stop racing!

This past week, self-professed goths Kynt Cothron and Vyxsin Fiala were eliminated in Mumbai, India, on "The Amazing Race."
The pink-and-black clad team finished dead last on the previous leg of the competition. However, instead of making their departure, they were given an additional challenge on the following leg.
Unfortunately, any hope for the goths was snubbed out when they chose the wrong team for a "U-Turn" penalty.
With that mistake behind them, the dating team from Louisville, KY ended their journey on "The Amazing Race."
Currently in its 12th season, the race pits teams against each other in a mad dash around the world in the quest for a US$1 million prize. "The Amazing Race" airs Sundays on CTV.
CTV.ca chatted with the team about how they discovered goth culture and their experience on the race.
CTV.ca: You've said that you wanted to represent the "goth community" around the world on the show. Do you think you did that?
Vyxsin: I think so. I think we represented the goth culture in a more favourable light. It's not a secret that there are some pretty negative stereotypes about goths. And the fact is, goth people are really artistic and fun.
Kynt: We wanted the show that the stereotypes were not true, that goths aren't just depressed.
CTV.ca: At which point in your lives did you discover goth culture and embrace it?
Kynt: For me, as a child, I always loved Halloween. I loved scary movies and I loved dressing up all year around. Then as a teenager I started getting into music and actual fashion, and all of those things melded together for me so well. My goth phase was a perfect fit and I knew I found my calling. It's funny, because finding goth made me a much more positive person. I was so happy to find people who could relate to me.
Vyxsin: We moved all the time when I was younger, and I was perpetually the new kid. I was shy and bookish, and I tried so hard to fit in and be normal. I failed miserably, and I came to this conclusion that I could spend the rest of my life trying to be normal and mainstream and never quite make it, or I could just celebrate being different. Once I made that decision, I find I'm less angst-ridden than before. I love the music and the theatrical sense of dressing up and letting my inner child dress me. It's a great way to be artistically expressive and emotionally in tune.
Kynt: It allows you to be so more fluid and flexible in terms of your appearance and your interests. Vyxsin and I have had multiple hair colours in the past, and we're always updating our fashion and our look and it keeps life from getting boring. It will always be a part of our lives.
CTV.ca: So how do you feel about the way you were portrayed on the race?
Kynt: I thought our portrayal was extraordinarily accurate. Let's face it; everything we said on the show we actually said or we actually did. It's reality TV and there's no CGI involved. The great thing about "The Amazing Race" is that it's very authentic. What you see on television comes off as easier than it really was. For example, many of the drives are very long and arduous.
CTV.ca: Watching the episodes, what were the most surprising things you saw?
Vyxsin: It was interested watching the past episodes, because as a team you're on your own. You don't get to really interact with other teams. We were surprised by some things we saw, but overall, emotions run high and it's an intense experience. We don't really have anything negative to say about anyone.
CTV.ca: Has your life changed at all since "The Amazing Race"?
Kynt: Our passion for traveling has intensified. We've never felt so claustrophobic in our lives! We can't wait to jump on an air place again. We're coming to Canada so we can visit Vancouver and explore up there.

A Gothic Tragedy
Last Sunday, I wanted to dress all in black after watching "The Amazing Race."
Because Kynt and Vyxsin, the Goth couple, got eliminated when they made a couple mental errors after racing really hard to come back in contention.
Because they came in last in the previous episode, they had to do a Speed Bump -- a task only they had to perform. And yet they managed to get ahead of the bickering couple Nate and Jen. If they had only U-Turned them, Kynt and Vyxsin would still be racing.
Alas, they chose to pick another team.
Even so, if Kynt had perfectly executed a Roadblock that involved deliveries, they might have won. Unfortunately for them, Kynt didn't realize the requirements of the task fully.
Here's what the Pinks had to say about their Racing experience:
MSN: You guys were my favorites going in, so I'm sorry to see you get eliminated on Sunday.
Kynt: Aww.
MSN: I thought you guys were going to get right back in it and then you just ripped my heart out.
Kynt: Believe you and me, we ripped our hearts out too. We didn't want to go home.
MSN: First of all, how'd you guys meet?
Kynt: We met four years ago. I handed Vyxsin a flier for a Goth Night event, and man did that flier work. ... It was a club night with a DJ spinning and stuff like that.
Vyxsin: He handed me this flier, and I was like, "Oh, this looks like a fun event." Then I looked up and was like, "Oh, what a cute guy. He's really adorable." Not long after that, we were pretty inseparable.
Kynt: We had a lot in common so we wanted to hang out almost instantly. And here we are, almost four years later, sprinting around the globe. Our friendship has only flourished. Vyxsin and I share everything -- the same goals, the same life outlook, the same cosmetics. (laughs)
MSN: So what made you decide to do the Amazing Race?
Kynt: Well, "The Amazing Race" has always been one of our favorite TV shows, one of the few programs that can hold our ADD-attention span. Because of that, I thought it was perfect for us. We both love to travel. We get severely claustrophobic if we stay in the same place for too long. We're road-trip junkies.
MSN: Let's get down to business. What were you thinking, trying to U-Turn Nick and Don?
Kynt: As a viewer, you're very privileged to have an omnipresent view of where everyone is and what everyone is doing. The only team we had visual contact with was Nate and Jen, who we saw very clearly pass us by about at least 10 minutes. So when we went to the sign, we thought about the teams and who we could eliminate from consideration. And Nate and Jen seemed like the first ones not to consider, because they had passed us. It seemed really strange that the U-Turn hadn't been activated yet. That to us was a clue that not many teams had passed the thing yet because how could no one use the U-Turn in this crucial of a leg, this close to the end? Especially when there would be no repercussions, you know what I mean. It's toward the end. It's not like using it at the beginning and people getting mad at you. But we saw them pass us. When they got to the U-Turn, you saw the footage, they remarked, "How'd they get here?" Like, "We were ahead of them. How'd they get here?" They thought the same thing as we did. They thought they were ahead of us. We thought they were ahead of us as well.
MSN: But wasn't the fact that they didn't use the U-Turn on you a sign they hadn't gotten there before you?
Vyxsin: But by that rationale, the other three teams could have been behind us.
Kynt: Right. Because there were three other teams that could have U-Turned us or another team as well.
Vyxsin: It seems really unlikely ... that the other teams could have been behind us. However, it seemed really unlikely that three teams would have gone ahead of us and not U-Turned us or each other.
Kynt: That blank U-Turn sign seemed very virgin to us. Like, how could no one have used this if they had the opportunity in this tight and crucial leg where everyone got bunched up together at the newspaper stand? It felt very untouched. It felt like no one has been here yet. It felt like we must be the first team to play.
Vyxsin: It seems clear looking back, hindsight being 20/20. Once we reached the Roadblock, we began that challenge and Nate and Jen arrived. That was the moment when we realized, "Oh, no! We U-Turned the wrong team." Of course, that was a sinking feeling because we knew what had happened and it became clear to us. At the time, we did what seemed logical to us. It obviously wasn't the correct decision. But it was a decision from the information we had at the moment seemed to us to make the most sense.
Kynt: There were just two clues. Number one, the sign hadn't been used, which indicated that no one had gotten there yet and number two, the fact that we saw Nate and Jen pass us.
MSN: I have to tell you, I'm not sure if I'm disappointed more because I wanted you guys to stay in the Race or because I wanted Nate and Jen gone. But man, there was some yelling and screaming in the house when they came back from commercial and you put up Nick and Don's picture there.
Vyxsin: That commercial was such a cliffhanger because it ended on their photo, didn't it?
Kynt: Their photo was the first one we pulled out of the box. We went through them and thought about the other ones.
MSN: So you pretty quickly dismissed the possibility of U-Turning them, though.
Kynt: They were the first possibility. Then we thought, they're the only team we've seen. They left at least ten minutes before us. And the U-Turn destination was really close to the flowers. It wasn't that far away. There wasn't that much room for a team to get lost. I still to this day don't understand how they got lost.
MSN: I think they just got stuck in traffic pretty badly. But when it got to the Pit Stop, how far behind them were you?
Kynt: Just a matter of minutes. I don't know the exact number but I know it was really, really tight.
Vyxsin: Very close.
MSN: The other question is about the deliveries. Now you forgot about getting the receipts back from people or some such?
Kynt: What I did was, whenever a delivery occurs, they give the recipient a receipt and they take a receipt with them to make sure both parties have confirmation of delivery. Which is exactly what I did. I obtained a receipt from them and left the other one with them as proof of delivery. I didn't realize I was supposed to bring it back. I wasn't the only one to make that error, because if you watch the footage, one of the recipients actually says to a team you forgot something, meaning the receipt, and the person goes back and they get it. It was...an idiosyncrasy of the task.
MSN: So what was the best part of the Race for each of you?
Vyxsin: For me, the best part of being on the Race was to see these places and meet these incredible people that we got to meet, have this adventure, really challenge each other with things we never dreamed of doing before, really watch each other blossom under the intense pressure and really thrive. I was so proud of Kynt. I just feel he was the most wonderful teammate I ever could have imagined. My favorite thing about the Race was getting through it with him.
Kynt: "The Amazing Race" is such a beautiful concept. On one hand, it's a typical reality show. It highlights interpersonal conflict and conquest. On the other hand, it's a lot like National Geographic. Every show showcases a different country's landscape, scenery, architecture, culture, and people. There's nothing else like it on TV. We're so proud to be a part of it. And like she said, the chance to travel the world. We don't look at it as loss. We look at what we won. And we won the opportunity to go on a globetrotting adventure across eight legs. We don't feel bad about it. We tend to focus on what we did right as opposed than what we did wrong. Every team in the game is going to come home with that "I woulda, I coulda, I shoulda" story. Every team is going to have that one moment where if they only turned left instead of right...
Vyxsin: Why didn't I, Why didn't you? Why didn't we. You can drive yourself crazy with that attitude.
Kynt: Our moment was more dramatic, with the U-Turn. But everybody's going to have that one consequential error that costs them the game.
MSN: What would you say besides the U-Turn was the toughest moment of being on the Race for you?
Kynt: The India leg in general was definitely the toughest, because we had to contend with the additional Speed Bump, and even then it's not just the task itself, but the travel time that we lost traveling to and from the Speed Bump location. The Speed Bump itself wasn't right there next to the sign. That was just the Speed Bump clue. We had to get in a taxi and go to another destination completely. That leg was just rigorous. It was a fight for life from the beginning of the day to the end, gasping for air.
Vyxsin: We arrived there first but we didn't get much of an advantage for getting the first flight because we all had to wait for the newspaper stand to open in the morning. We didn't really get any sort of a lead that way.
MSN: How would you describe the strengths and weaknesses of the remaining teams?
Kynt: I feel the four teams in the final have all earned their spot. I think they're all very competitive in different ways. They deserve to be where they are. All four of them need to focus on as much teamwork as possible to get ahead because things are only going to get harder. So they'll well-deserving of their position, we wish them the best of luck.
MSN: What's the future hold for you guys?
Kynt: 2008 is a big question mark at this point. But I can tell you we've never been more excited. We've never been filled with more anticipation. I've a feeling we won't be going away. This adventure may be over, but the Pink-and-Black Attack will never stop racing.
MSN: Vyxsin, any final thoughts?
Vyxsin: I think overall, Kynt and I feel just so appreciative for an opportunity of a lifetime. Whatever the future holds, I'm sure we'll find some new and exciting stuff to get ourselves into. Whatever it is, we're never bored. As long as Kynt is around, there'll be some excitement in the New Year.
MSN: Two other questions: What's up with the spelling of your names, and was it hard to keep up your makeup on the Race?
Vyxsin: Vyxsin is a nickname. Makeup was difficult to do under outdoor conditions, it's true. Especially in the warmer climates, our makeup got a little bit melty. But we did our best to maintain as well as we could. We got really good at drawing on trains and airplanes and in turbulence.
Kynt: We did it so often we're pretty adept. ... The morning before the Race, we'd put our game faces on. Because when we look our best, we play our best.

We were shocked last week when America’s favorite goth racers, Kynt & Vyxsin, were eliminated from Amazing Race 12. Some critics called Kynt’s U-Turn the dumbest move in Amazing Race history. Others blamed the team for making what looked like avoidable fatal errors, costing them their chance to vie for the finish line and the $1 million prize.
“What’s hard for viewers to understand,” Kynt told Reality TV Magazine in a recent interview, “Is that when you’re watching the show you get to play God. …It’s all so obvious.” But, the pair claim, it’s not so obvious when you’re playing the game, in part due to isolation (not to mention exhaustion, dehydration, confusion…) and in part due to interpretation of the Race “clues.” “The clues are just that – they’re clues,” says Kynt. “They’re very short. They’re sometimes not very clear. That’s part of the game. [Viewers] get a much more detailed breakdown.”
The pair was coming into last week’s leg of the race at a disadvantage, knowing that they would be faced with a “Speed Bump” due to their last place status during the previous leg. “It was a very fatiguing day,” Kynt says. But the team raced through their Speed Bump “yoga” challenge very quickly. “We didn’t slow it down by falling or making mistakes,” he says, adding that the watching Vyxsin twist and turn during the challenge was the high point of his day. “I think it was the high point of the day for the instructor as well,” he jokes. Vyxsin adds that she, as a vegetarian, was just relieved not to have to “eat something gross.”
After leaving the Speed Bump challenge, the pair was surprised to see Nateifer still working on their flower challenge. “Nate and Jennifer are always at the front of the pack,” Kynt explains. What they didn’t know was that Nateifer had spent an hour looking for the first clue and were actually at the back of the pack.
Kynt & Vyxsin thought that their suspicions that everyone was still behind them were confirmed when they reached the U-Turn and found that nobody had U-Turned them. “We would’ve bet money that we were going to be U-Turned,” Vyxsin explains. Kynt agrees, “Our first thought was shellshock that we weren’t U-Turned. We thought, ‘Maybe nobody’s been here yet.’”
Going with that reasoning, the pair decided to choose a team – any team – to U-Turn, with the hope that they would keep at least one team coming across the mat behind them. “We didn’t actually know we’d made a bad move until we hit the Roadblock,” Vyxsin says.
Still, the pair says, they were only beat to the mat by Nateifer by “less than five minutes.” Though they were thrilled to be declared Most Fashionable Racers by host Phil, “Our hearts sunk when Phil said, ‘you are the last team to arrive,’” Kynt says.
There are no regrets for the self-proclaimed “Pink and Black Attack.” Kynt & Vyxsin definitely feel as if they stayed true to themselves during the race, and soaked up memories that will be with them for the rest of their lives.
“We were really touched by how warm and friendly and joyful the people were [in Burkina Faso, Africa]. The people just looked happy. They were so sweet to us. …To see such lovely people in such poverty was completely heartbreaking,” Vyxsin says, recalling her emotional breakdown after the bicycle delivery challenge in Africa. “…There were huge mountains of garbage, [with] children climbing and picking through it. It’s burned in my mind forever.”
The “magical village” in Vilnius, Lithuania will stay in their minds, as well. “It was the one moment in Amazing Race where Vyxsin and I felt underdressed,” Kynt says. “We felt right at home.” So much at home, in fact, that the 10 minutes or so that they spent having tea and biscuits with the elves and gnomes cost them the spot of first place during that leg.
The team used their strengths to take them through 8 legs in the infamous “Race Around the World”: patience, teamwork, and…The Force? During the African dance detour, Kynt used his skill with a light saber to rock the judges. When Kynt saw the staffs they were supposed to use to dance with, he says, “The first thing I thought was light sabers.” Vyxsin laughs, “I think we were the first team in history to use The Force to win a detour.”
So what’s next for the Pink and Black Attack? “Oh, my, my,” is all Kynt will say. Vyxsin, however, has real optimism about what may lie ahead for the two of them.
“We won 8 legs of an adventure around the world,” Vyxsin says. “We’ve been so close for so long, there’s not a lot about each other at this point that we don’t know. We both enjoy watching each other blossom. For me, Kynt has been such a huge wonderful force in my life. I feel like he’s helped me grow. On the race and off, I feel like I have the best teammate ever.”

Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: So when we spoke prior to the season premier you guys talked about not liking labels on your relationship. Did you like the “dating goths” label that followed your names throughout each episode?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: It was fine, when you’re making a show like this you don’t have time to explain every idiosyncrasy about the people on the show.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: It was sort of funny that it took a major network to say we were dating.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: Was that news to you?
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: We’re not mushy about feelings and so on, it was just a new label.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: I noticed the two of you seemed to interact easily and really enjoyed yourselves with the locals while other teams may have used the locals as props. It appears this helped you guys out during the race. I remember when you stopped at the festival and some of the teams actually yelled at the locals to hush so they could accurately count the fence posts.
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: This was part of our strategy and also our approach to life in general. It’s not a TV show to the people who worked at the airports, people we met in the streets, cab drivers, and the locals. Treating the locals with respect worked for us, we never had a problem getting directions or information. We certainly felt the stress but tried to calm down before we approached anyone.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: The festival you’re talking about was in Lithuania. When Kynt and I got to the village it was one our favorite stops and we also arrived ahead of the other teams. Of all things, this was probably one of our least intelligent moments during the race since we got so wrapped up in the local’s outfits, the music, and so on. We started playing with the festival characters, started dancing, and lost focus. We felt like we had visited Alice In Wonderland.
Mark, RealityWanted.com: I could see how the two of you could lose focus for a minute while at the festival. It looked like they had some pretty elaborate costumes.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: For once in our lives we were at an event where we were underdressed.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: Since we’re talking about the festival and fun magical type things, did witchcraft or anything from the supernatural assist you guys during the race? Last week Jen mentioned that you guys must have supernatural powers and/or use witchcraft to help you stay in the lead?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: It was great to learn we have witch powers. Had I known how to use them we would not have been eliminated.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: I can’t say we have supernatural powers, not that I know of.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: I guess you would still be on the show if you had some cool powers. What helped the two of you stay so calm and collected with each other while other teams kicked and fought with one another. Since we know it wasn’t witchcraft what made your relationship work so well?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: That was a major part of our approach going into The Amazing Race. Win lose or draw we wanted to savor it and enjoy it. Why turn it into a disaster for our relationship. Vyxsin and I share the same outlook on life, the same game strategy, and of course the same make up. Our support for one another really helped us enjoy the experience and enjoy it with one another.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: Wait, you did have one on screen blow out when Vxysin was driving and Kynt wanted to jump out of the car?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: It was a very brief moment and you see we didn’t dwell on it later or call each other names.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: It was really the only time during the entire race when we fought. It was actually so brief but that clip was shown on all the commercials promoting that episode. Kynt was upset that I had been awake for about 38 hours. I was driving a bit recklessly and he wanted me to pull over. The joke between us is that it took tens of thousands of miles of travel to have a blow out with one another.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: You two did seem to hold it together well. Now let’s talk about some of the challenges. For example, talk about the dance challenge you had in Africa. Some of the teams were told their dance lacked creativity, you both danced and one of the judges said it was wonderful. What inspired your dance moves?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: When I saw those sticks they reminded me of the light sabers from Star Wars and I knew I could throw down some Darth Maul moves. Vyxsin and I are the first team in Amazing Race history to use the force in a detour.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: We didn’t try to choreograph a big thing. I told Kynt I would try and get the technical part down and he would do some light saber improve.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: Ah ha, so Jen was wrong, you guys used the force not witchcraft. I had another question about some of the detour challenges and also your appearance. Kynt, what happened to your makeup and outfit after you did the pole vault challenge and ended up taking a swim in the canal?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: That was a rough one. When I read the detour challenge the clue asked which one of us was a better acrobat. So I looked around and saw flat land and some sheep. I assumed I would be herding sheep but then I saw the irrigation ditch and I knew I was going down. My pretty black and pink outfit was ruined but I had a backup, actually about 12 back up outfits.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com: Let that be a lesson to any future Goth racers, pack multiple black and pink outfits. The two of you seem to have a ton of online support. From what I read you guys won several online polls such as CBS, Entertainment Weekly, etc… How does that feel?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: You just feel it in your heart, it’s so humbling and flattering. It was funny, the other day we were at a local pizza parlor with friends and a 78 yr old lady came up to us and said she proclaimed herself Kynt and Vyxsin’s oldest fan. She told us that on episode one she didn’t like us but by the 3rd episode she loved us and cheered us on with her grandkids.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: It’s been awesome to be cheered on like this. We had many people who had never met Goths then started to like and support us during the race. It has been great to see all the fans share the experience with us. We are very fortunate.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com – If you Google your names there are tons of fan forums, postings, and fan made photos of the two of you. I assume you changed what some people think of the Goth scene. What did you learn about yourself, one another, or other cast members from watching this season?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: I could not believe how stupid I looked at the U-Turn. When I watched myself, I was talking to the TV hoping I would pick the right team.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: It is interesting watching the show. There was so much going with other teams that we didn’t see. Overall when it comes to what you see of us it’s very accurate. We have admiration for all the teams that have ever participated in The Amazing Race.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com – Well speaking of the U-Turn, I saved the elimination question for last. Kynt, talk with me about why you U turned the wrong team?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: We started our journey in India on a positive note. Vxysin and I found the newspaper clue first and left before all other teams found the clue. As our cab sped away all the teams were still looking for the first clue.
After that we were separated from all the teams since we had to go do the speed bump challenge and none of the other teams had to. When we arrived at the flower detour challenge Jen and Nate were still there working on their flowers. Nate and Jen are typically at the front of the pack so we had no idea if the other teams were ahead or behind us. We then wrapped up the flower challenge, received our next clue, and read about the upcoming U-Turn.
We became worried and assumed we were going to be the team that would get U-Turned. When we got there we were shocked to see that the U-Turn sign was blank. We were shocked and started flipping through all the cards with the other team’s faces. We came across Jen and Nate’s card but since they left the flower challenge before we did we assumed they had passed the U-Turn and elected not to use it. We knew where Jen and Nate were in the race but no one else.
Nicolas and Donald had a rough start in India so we took a chance and tried to U-Turn them not knowing they had already passed us. Of course we made a serious error. Also when you see Jen and Nate arrive at the U-Turn they were also shocked that we were in front of them. If you don’t visually see the other teams you have no idea what order they are in.
A. Vyxsin, The Amazing Race 12: We surely thought a team would have used the U-Turn as a safety precaution.. We were the most logical team to U-Turn so we were so perplexed when we still saw it there unused.
Q. Mark, RealityWanted.com – Well we enjoyed watching you two on the show and like other fans, we want to know what’s next for the both of you?
A. Kynt, The Amazing Race 12: At this point in life 2008 is a bit of a question but we have never had so much excitement for a new year. The Pink and Black attack will never stop racing. The Amazing Race followers know that the goth couple, Kynt and Vyxsin (at right), were eliminated a week ago. They were a loss for viewers because they were fun to watch in their black and hot pink outfits. They enjoyed every environment and every task and stayed pretty zen about their relationship throughout the competition, unlike another couple - Nate and Jen - who say hateful things like, "I hate you," to each other regularly. I was so rooting for Nate and Jen to lose.
Not knowing they would be out of the race soon, we interviewed Kynt and Vyxsin for a piece in the magazine and found them to be as charming off camera as on. So I want to share more of the Q and A interview with you.
How did you two meet? How long have you been friends? Are you now dating?
Vyxsin: I met Kynt shortly after I moved to Louisville, he handed me a flyer for a local Goth night. I thought he was the cutest little goth boy EVER! Within a short amount of time, we were close friends, hanging out almost every day.
Kynt: And here we are four years later -- sprinting around the globe! Our friendship has only flourished! Vyxsin and I have "dated" off and on - that label has changed a few times - but we have ALWAYS been best friends - and that is the most important thing to me!
Why did you want to do the Race? What motivated you?
Kynt: The Amazing Race has been one of our favorite TV shows for a significant amount of time. It's one of the few shows on TV that can hold my ADD-attention-span. Vyxsin and I thought it was the perfect fit
for us. We both love to travel. We get SEVERELY claustrophobic if we stay in one place too long. We're road-trip junkies. We're also very adept at traveling on the fly.
Vyxsin: It was actually Kynt's idea to apply. It probably never would have occurred to me to try something like this. But one day we were sitting and watching the show and there was a commercial on that said
that they were casting for the next season and Kynt looked at me and asked if I'd ever consider trying to do this. I was thinking so many people apply for these and we probably won't get on, but you know, why
not? Let's give it a shot. Imagine my surprise when we got the phone call months later.
Kynt: I'm always a dreamer. The odds never scare me. So we immediately downloaded and filled out the applications and shot off a video tape. Five months later, we had almost forgotten about it, but then the phone rang and they were interested in interviewing us. And the rest is history.
Vyxsin: It's crazy, around 50,000 people applied for this. The show wasn't looking for "goth people" per se. They just stumbled upon us. We're both thankful they "took a chance" with us and gave us this
opportunity.
Kynt: Vyxsin and I really felt we epitomized the "spirit" of this TV show. Besides our passion for traveling, we both have a genuinely fun spirit about us. We went into the Race with the mentality that win, lose or draw - we will have fun, we will savor this experience, and hopefully we will make it memorable for viewers as well. We love experiencing different cultures. We're not afraid of communication barriers. We love to try new types of food, new types of fashion. We're very social. We love meeting new people and are always ready for a new adventure. We've taken on challenges in life with a team mentality. We've been a team long before this Amazing Race. All of those qualities about us are why I feel like our team, more than any other, epitomizes the spirit of the show.
Vyxsin: We are genuinely proud to be the "first goth team" on the Amazing Race. The thing we love about the show, they want you to be who you REALLY are. They don't "assign" you roles.

Hollywood!! I am glad--I have felt sorry for the teams missing out on The Early Show and the Finish Line this season.
They looked FABULOUS! And handled themselves very well in front of the camera.
Questions were about the receipts, the Yoga, the "wrong" U-Turn, the brief spat in the car, and being the Most Fashionable. Nothing new that we didn't know from the post-race Interviews.
So THEY were wonderful--but man....that show is LAME.

As Amazing Race fans know, no team was eliminated this week. But to tide you over till the next episode, here's an interview with America's favorite ousted racing Goths, Kynt Cothron and Vyxsin Fiala. Alternately called the Pinks, Team Goth or "the Freaks," the heavily eyelinered pair gave us a bright glimpse of the Goth side — until they got lost in Italy and were forced to face a new race penalty (the speed bump) in India. But like the "Goth Energizer Bunnies" they like to call themselves, Kynt and Vyxsin kept going and going. And just when it looked like they might pull off one mother of a comeback, they U-turned the wrong team, then forgot to grab all their gas-delivery receipts. Like Kynt would say, "Oh my Goth," that sucks.
TVGuide.com: You two rocked the yoga speed bump but then you blew the U-turn. How the heck did you pick Gramps and Nick over Nate and Jen?
Kynt: It seems so easy when you see it on TV. You get to see where everybody is. But remember, we were the very first team to get out of there. When we got to the flower detour, it was the first time we made visual contact with another team, Nate and Jen. And they finished the challenge at least 10 minutes before we did. So then it was just rolling the dice — like pick a card, any card. May as well be them.
TVGuide.com: Seems logical. Especially since, by that point, weren't you two working off, what, two seconds of sleep?
Vyxsin: We were tired. But to be honest, we could have stayed at the U-turn for six hours with wonderful, restful sleep and still not have come to the right conclusion because, from my point of view, it was a bit of a guessing game. It seemed unlikely that the teams would have been behind us, but it also seemed extremely unlikely that all the teams would have gone by and not U-turned anyone. It doesn't really make a lot of sense, strategically.
Kynt: Well, we were working on very [little] sleep. If you noticed, we had to spend the night on the street in India. When we got there, it was evening and the newspaper stand didn't open until 6 am.
Vyxsin: And there were rather large bugs and rather large rats. I'm not against rats at all. I used to have pet rats. But if you're a little concerned that they might pounce you, it keeps you from getting a deep, restful sleep. All the teams ended up huddled in this room that was an entrance to a bank.
TVGuide.com: Rats, bugs, sleeping on benches. With all that, was the race still fun?
Vyxsin: It really was. Obviously a million dollars is a million dollars, and we would have loved that money. But, barring that, we got to have the adventure of a lifetime.
TVGuide.com: Have you gone back to your regular jobs?
Kynt: Yeah, we're back to waiting tables.
Vyxsin: Only now people will say, "Can I have your autograph?" I sign and then go, "Would you like more Diet Coke?" It's funny. It's a bizarre sort of fame.
TVGuide.com: Are the tips better?
Kynt: Definitely.
TVGuide.com: When did you go Goth?
Both: In our teens.
Vyxsin: My dad was in the Army, so we moved all the time and I was perpetually the new kid. For a long time I really did try my hardest to fit in and be normal. I just failed miserably. And I realized I could either spend the rest of my life striving to be something that I'm not, failing and feeling bad about who I am, or I could celebrate the fact that, for whatever reason, I'm different, and just enjoy that.
Kynt: For me, I always loved Halloween and scary movies. When I was a teenager, I started getting into fashion and music, and all of these things just came together.
TVGuide.com: On the ferry to Italy, you were shown reapplying your makeup. It must have been hard to keep up your look while racing.
Vyxsin: It was challenging. But we got very adept at applying symmetrical eyebrows in airplane bathrooms when the plane was in turbulence. But if we feel aesthetically put together, it helps our morale.
Kynt: When we look our best, we play our best. Just like football players before a big game when they get their shoulder pads and their helmet on.
TVGuide.com: How long on average did it take to put on your game face?
Kynt: Never more than 30 minutes.
Vyxsin: But that would include getting dressed. And the stuff we do on the show is pretty streamlined — like "Kynt and Vyxsin Light." Kynt nicknamed it "athleti-goth."
TVGuide.com: Kynt, you said all the costumed villagers in Lithuania made you feel normal. Funny, since you guys go out of your way to be different.
Vyxsin: He wasn't saying, "Oh, at last, I feel normal!" It was more like, "Compared to these guys, I feel a little underdressed for once."
Kynt: We were surrounded by elves, dwarves, fairies and little critters. When we got there, it was like we were almost hypnotized by it. We started playing around with all the little creatures and dancing. One of them invited us into their home and we had a biscuit and some tea. That was our favorite moment. Then we looked at each other and we were like...
Vyxsin: ... What are we doing? We've got to get back to racing!
TVGuide.com: Did you break any nail-polish bottles in your bag?
Kynt: Thankfully, we did not have any items explode or break, believe it or not. But packing was difficult, because we had so many things we wanted to bring: our hairdryer, our flatiron, our makeup compacts.
TVGuide.com: You did not bring a flatiron on The Amazing Race!
Kynt: I did. I've got a little bit of wave. And I like it to be kind of straight and pointy. I was the first person [on the series] to bring a flatiron. Phil did name us the most fashionable team in Amazing Race history. So we were happy to win something.
TVGuide.com: Too bad it wasn't one of the legs of the race.
Vyxsin: We came in second three times. Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.
Kynt: That's OK. This whole experience has just been such a blessing. I wake up every morning and wonder if it really happened.
Vyxsin: It feels like a crazy, wonderful dream.
TVGuide.com: But then you watch the tape. What's it been like to see the comments the other teams made about you?
Kynt: It gives us a giggle.
Vyxsin: Looking how Kynt and I do, I can't say we haven't been called names before, and sometimes they've been quite a bit harsher and meaner than those. It's unfortunate when people resort to that... but no big deal.
TVGuide.com: What kind of reception but did you generally get?
Kynt: Our look is different, but it's not intimidating, you know? We give off a very friendly vibe. And I think people could pick up on that. Also, I found that because we were something different, usually it was an advantage for us when dealing with people. We weren't the strongest team, the most athletic or the smartest. But we were stubborn. We would never stop. Like Vyxsin said on the first episode, "We were like Gothic Energizer bunnies."
TVGuide.com: Ah, your famous line. A couple of weeks ago, Azaria and Hendekea told me they felt like you two turned it on for the camera. How do you react to that?
Kynt: I don't think that's accurate because they never saw us when cameras weren't around. We were followed by a camera crew 24 hours a day.
Vyxsin: And I would say that of the other teams, too. We never saw any of them not being filmed. I don't feel like we really know the other teams very well outside of the context of The Amazing Race.
TVGuide.com: Didn't you spend some time with them at the Elimination Station in Portugal?
Kynt: Actually not. Because we were so close to the end, they took us to the ending destination.
TVGuide.com: You got the shaft. You didn't win anything and you missed out on the resort part.
Vyxsin: But I wouldn't have traded India and Italy for anything.
TVGuide.com: Speaking of Italy, that's where you had a meltdown. Kynt even threatened to jump out of the car at one point.
Vyxsin: And I don't blame him. We got super lost. When we got to the [accident on the highway] we decided to go on this insane mountain road. So I drove all night long on these tiny, hairpin turns up and down these crazy, super narrow, dark mountain roads. I couldn't even blink. We had no food, no water. And there was no way to get water. And no gas stations. I was pretty much delirious. Honestly, I shouldn't have been driving. No one who's been awake for a few days should be driving. It's just not smart.
Kynt: It was our one bad moment in The Amazing Race, and it was quick.
TVGuide.com: True, and you didn't jump. Vyxsin, how often does he threaten to injure himself to get his way?
Kynt: I'm like, "Vyxsin, gimme that powder or I'm going to stab myself in the eye."
Vyxsin: Honestly, the thing that we joke about with each other is that it took three years of us being together almost constantly and tens of thousands of miles of travel for us to, you know, snap at each other for a minute. It's not so bad.
TVGuide.com: Back when you were doing the furniture hoisting, you mentioned that you did macramé. What else would people be surprised to learn about you?
Vyxsin: That I'm very domestic. I love to cook and to do little house stuff like decorate. Kynt and I have these 1950s gender roles. Even though he's very cute and small and prissy, he's also very much a leader and he was very much the leader of the team.
TVGuide.com: That's the opposite of what they showed and what you claimed earlier this season when you said he brings out your chivalrous side. You made it seem like your gender roles were reversed.
Vyxsin: They sort of bounce back and forth.
TVGuide.com: I've been wondering.... What happened to the clunky shoes? I thought I saw you wearing some. Or did I hallucinate?
Kynt: You might have seen us wearing some toward the beginning. But they had to get left behind — as in, in the garbage in the airport before we went to Ireland. When we got to that first airport, we did some purging. After that, whenever we went to a pit stop, we'd try to lighten our load so that as we approached the end, we'd be sleeker and faster.
TVGuide.com: What else did you dump?
Kynt: Well, when we started, we had a lot more of everything — a lot of warm clothes, more makeup, 17 or 20 powder compacts. Fishnets. By the end, we had just what we needed to survive.
Vyxsin: But Kynt's flatiron did make it all the way to the end. That was never added to the trash list.
Kynt: The flatiron made it around the world!

While the independent film is not yet rated, Cothron and Hardin consider it PG-13.

Kynt & Vyxsin from CBS Series The Amazing Race Honor Slain Teen in North Hollywood Vigil

The ubiquitous Kynt and Vyxsin, Goth personalities stayed up Monday night baking cupcakes for the 1st period class of slain E. O. Jr. High School teen Lawrence King. They are slotted to visit with the class after school in a park close to the campus. Parents, teachers, and students from school will be there for cupcakes, talk, and positivity with the Goth duo.
On Tuesday, February 12, 2008, Lawrence King was brutally shot and killed by another student. Investigations have revealed this was a hate crime perpetrated on a young man that was considered "effeminate, and wore make-up and jewelry to school".
Kynt had been in discussion with the teacher of the class just a little after the incident, offering support and an "anything we can do" attitude. The first period English teacher where the slaying took place jumped at the chance to get, "any sort of help, especially something fun for the kids."
"We can make a difference in this situation, and help make sure Lawrence is NEVER forgotten," Kynt commented. "As a fellow 'Boy-in-Makeup,' I understand and can relate to the torment and turmoil which Lawrence endured from others at his school."
Little did Kynt know, but his own gut reaction was mirrored by A-List celebrities like Ellen Degeneres, Janet Jackson, Rosie O'Donnell and others.
Little did Kynt and Vyxsin know, but a nation of teenagers would be honoring Lawrence "Larry" King today. March 25th, 2008 is a "Day of Silence" for the slain teen. Kynt & Vyxsin will not be alone in their support of safer schools, tolerence, and serious change.
On the TV series, Kynt and Vyxsin were noted for their over-the-top makeup and gender-blurring fashion. The other racers often made derogatory remarks, on air, about Kynt and Vyxsin's appearance - bluntly calling them "freaks" or "witches." This was not the first time they have met intolerance from a misunderstanding public. On the night of September 25th, 2004, Kynt was attacked by three men [in Louisville, KY] who "didn't like the way he looked." Kynt was hospitalized and his face required reconstructive surgery of his left oribital bone, which was crushed in the assault. Kynt recently issued the following statement online:
"I would like to express my condolences and support to the family and friends of Lawrence King. It has been documented that Lawrence was subjected to marked negativity from fellow male students for occassionally wearing make-up, jewelry, and feminine clothing.
The seemingly harmless jokes and name-calling escalated toward this horrific act of violence. Lawrence was considered an outcast, and often teased for his appearance, which is a situation I can relate to very well, as I am a male who is proud to enjoy a more effeminate appearance.
I am saddened that Lawrence's creativity, free-thinking, and individuality might have contributed to his murder. Every student deserves to attend school with the assumption that they will be safe, no matter how they choose to express themself aesthetically. This is a tragedy but one I feel can be averted in the future with an increased emphasis on diversity and tolerance education in schools.
Parents need to take charge as well, and be mindful of acceptance as they mold the thoughts, ideas, and outlook of their child. Creating a culture based on an 'acceptance and appreciation of difference,' whether that difference is race, religion, sexuality, gender expression, or aesthetic, is the responsibility of EACH and EVERY American. This must happen."
A VIGIL IN NORTH HOLLYWOOD FOR LAWRENCE KING
The candle-light vigil is entitled "Fallen Angel: A Tribute to Lawrence King"and will be held on Wednesday, March 26, at the West Hollywood Park, 647 N San Vicente Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069 from 5pm to 9pm. Attendees are suggested to bring candles, poetry, photos, personal narratives, and any other artful expression they wish to share with others.
Letters of support for the students at EO Green Junior High will also be collected for delivery to the school. All ages are welcome. "This vigil is an opportunity for the youth of Los Angeles and surrounding communities to make a statement, a chance to bow our heads, show respect, and stand supportive of a young man taken long before his time," closed Kynt and Vyxsin.

Walked them to the lobby to show them out, when Kynt (sp?!) asked, "Darryl, is it easy to get a cab in this part of town?" And I said yes. But I thought...dude, you were on The Amazing Race! THE AMAZING RACE! Maybe he was kidding. Their interview is on Stu & Colleen's page, and there's a great shot of them on the photo gallery page. And yes that's a real clue they're holding. Cool!

Kynt and Vyxsin, the Goth couple from Amazing Race 12, navigated their way through eight countries in 30 days but they were having a terrible time connecting with the Star in Toronto. There was a flurry of emails agreeing to meet at a certain time but they failed to say where. Hey, it's a big city, guys.
We finally sit down over beer (Vyxsin) and water with lemon (Kynt) in a midtown hotel. Vyxsin drinks her draught beer through a straw. You don't spend 15 minutes perfecting your black lipstick and liner only to blow it with beverage.
They are in town hosting and appearing in a fashion show tonight featuring Underground Youth Fashion at Circa niterie on John St.
Since the end of the show, they've been on a PR whirl: guesting on E! Talk Soup; appearing in the new issue of Gothic Beauty magazine; modelling for the clothing chain Hot Topic; and going on a cruise to Nova Scotia with Rosie O'Donnell.
They were the only Goth couple in more than 50,000 people who applied for the show. But they're not scary, ripped-fishnets, leather-and-studs Goth. They are sweet. They are the Hello Kitty Goths.
Vyxsin's heroine growing up was Anne of Green Gables but her fuchsia pigtails make her look like Pippi Longstocking. The kids in Africa thought her hair was cotton candy.
Whether rappelling against castle walls in Croatia or biking on a high wire over a gorge in Ireland, he wore guy-liner and she wore full makeup – but not their signature Herman Munster platform boots. They compromised with black and silver sneakers and wore matching outfits in hot pink and black.
"We wanted to blind and disorient the opposition," Vyxsin explains. "We hoped they would underestimate us."
There was backlash.
"They'd say, `Have you seen those two Goth girls?'" says Kynt. "I can be androgynous."
"They called us freaks," says Vyxsin. "That was ouchy."
They both come from middle-class families in Louisville, Ky., where they were waiting tables before Race while trying to break into the performance art scene. There isn't much of a Goth scene in Louisville, despite their best efforts as teens. They admit to being 20something now.
He loved Tim Burton; she posed for her Grade 8 photo in the cemetery. His background is in music; hers is in theatre.
They raced through Burkina Faso in West Africa, Holland, India, Lithuania, Croatia and Italy à la Goth. What did the folks in Vilnius think of them?
"Our aesthetic worked to our advantage," says Kynt. "We give off a friendly vibe. We are not intimidating. We're not depressed or angry. Actually, we're on the prissy side."
"We are like real-life cartoon characters," adds Vyxsin. "If we were tough and wore vinyl and rivets, Vilnius would be scared."
They met three years ago when he handed her a flyer to Goth Night. They say they're a "couple" but come off more like girlfriends.
"Vyxsin and I share goals, outlook and cosmetics," Kynt says. And shoes. They take the same size.
Her father, an ex-army man, put them through a boot camp after they'd been accepted on the show. Vyxsin, who Kynt calls "a pink-haired Lara Croft," grew up rappelling, hiking and camping. He is afraid of heights and can't swim.
"I packed pink inflatable water wings for Kynt," says Vyxsin, a former lifeguard.
He packed his flat iron. Even pole vaulting in Amsterdam, he didn't want the frizzies.
"When we look our best, we play our best," he says. "You can't roll out of bed and be Goth. It's high maintenance."
But you can learn to put your mascara and guy-liner on in a pup tent.

IMAGO magazine is a very couture, very EDGY magazine...and they wanted a gender-blurring centerfold with a naughty edge to it.
i told them - nudity - NO WAY.
Naughty - i can do that *wink wink*
and the issue is based on fairy tales...so Vyxsin and i are creating a theme based on Cinderella.
i'm the "fairy godmother" in that pic, casting the spell which will turn the hapless Vyxsin into Cinderella. in the next pic after that one (in the issue) Vyxsin is in a full length pink and purple gown!

"Amazing Race's" Kynt and Vyxsin to appear at Indianapolis gay pride parade
"Amazing Race" competitors Kynt and Vyxsin will appear in the Indianapolis Gay Pride Parade and Festival this weekend.
Kynt and Vyxsin will also away a vacation package thanks to one of their sponsors the Sheraton of Indianapolis.
Since their appearance on "The Amazing Race" Kynt and Vyxsin have been traveling the world appearing as guests in festivals, parades, and special events. The couple has also been doing gay activist work such as speaking out spoke out again a recent hate crime in Hollywood, California where a openly gay teen was shot by a classmate.
The Indy Pride Festival focuses on GLBT community building and brings thousands of LGBT community members and their supports to Military Park each year.

If you were in Pioneer Park last week and thought you saw a tall woman with bright pink hair wearing high heels, fishnet stockings, and a mini-skirt walking next to a man dressed in black wearing platform shoes, both with over-the-top makeup, no, you weren’t seeing things.
Kynt and Vyxsin, the goth couple who gained notice during CBS’ reality show “Amazing Race,” were in Alaska at the invitation of "American Gothique Magazine." They hosted dance nights at clubs in Anchorage and Fairbanks and stopped by Hot Topic in Fairbanks, a clothing chain that caters to the rock and goth crowds.
Their message is simple: You can’t judge a book by its cover. They are trying to present a positive picture of the goth culture — which is alive and well in Fairbanks, they said. They were pleasantly surprised at the response they got about their Alaska stops on their MySpace site, including notes from several goths in Fairbanks.
“It’s great to find some kindred spirits,” Vyxsin said Monday. “We like the vibe of the city. It’s chill, it’s friendly.”
One of their goals is to present a more positive view of the goth culture. Goth culture covers a range of topics: for some it’s about fashion, to others it’s a lifestyle. The gothic look involves black clothing, white makeup and edgy accessories.
There are a lot of misconceptions about goth culture, Vyxsin said. The stereotype is that they are depressed, socially inept basement dwellers, when most of the people Kynt and Vyxsin have met are intelligent, insightful and just plain fun.
They’re not in Fairbanks to recruit goths, Vyxsin said. “We want to give people an appreciation for something different, “whatever scene that inspires them, no matter what flavor they choose.”
They spent Sunday touring Pioneer Park, being filmed for mtv.com (http://think.mtv.com/alaskadani).
They stopped in at McCafferty’s on Monday to talk about the TV series, the Harry Potter books, goth culture and life on the road before briefly touring the Fairbanks Community Museum and dog mushing museum. Vyxsin is fascinated by history and was mesmerized by historic photos of Fairbanks and the gold rush.
Despite their, by Fairbanks standards, outlandish appearance, the couple was frank, down to earth and refreshingly forthright about their time in the spotlight.
They say they’re amazed at the range of their fan base — in one month they appeared in Gothic Beauty magazine and in Nickelodeon magazine.
Kynt and Vyxsin are from Louisville, Ky., where they worked as waiters and in a hair-styling salon before auditioning for “The Amazing Race.”
On the show, they were noted for their over-the-top makeup, signature hairstyles, and “passion for fashion.”
“We try to think outside the coffin,” Vyxsin said.
Although they didn’t win the million-dollar prize, they enjoyed the television show and overall got to keep their “game faces” on, although they said they started “melting” toward the end. They credit the show with opening a lot of doors for them.
“We always wanted to have a career of just being us,” Vyxsin said.
In the past year, in addition to appearing on the reality show, they have traveled all over the world (Fairbanks is the farthest north they’ve been, so far), been invited to go on a cruise up the northeast coast of Canada with Rosie O’Donnell, host a Halloween special — they toured a former tuberculosis sanitarium near Louisville that is reputed to be one of the most haunted places in the United States.
“I really feel like the “Amazing Race” wasn’t the end but the beginning of a greater journey,” Kynt said.

How has Wizard World Chicago been for both of you?
KYNT: Wizard World Chicago 2008 has been a blast! This is my fifth Wizard World Chicago, actually, but my first time appearing as a special guest. Vyxsin and I are honored to be here.
What difference have you found between being here as a spectator and being here as a guest?
VYXSIN: It is really interesting being on the opposite side of the table. It's really wonderful because we do get to meet so many people and you have a lot more time to talk to people. The only thing about it that's sad is that it's hard to get to see the convention for yourself. So unfortunately we haven't had a ton of time to go visit the other artists and vendors. We've had a great time. We're pretty happy.
What was being on "The Amazing Race" like?
KYNT: "The Amazing Race" was absolutely incredible. The program takes teams of two in a crazy journey literally around the entire globe in search of the one million dollar prize. I never imagined we would visit as many countries in our entire lifetime as we did in this one month. We went to places like India, Africa, Croatia, Lithuania, Ireland, Amsterdam...it was insane. The way I describe how you feel when you're on "The Amazing Race," think about when you're late for work and you're driving your car as fast as you can, your heart's racing, you're sweating, you're shaking, you're looking at your watch. That's how we felt 24 hours a day.
VYXSIN: It is, it's constant panic and paranoia. At the same time, at least for us, we were so excited every single minute we were on that race. It's like no matter how physically drained we were feeling, the adrenaline just kept us going and the excitement and general appreciation for what you get to do. This really was a once in a lifetime opportunity. We never really lost sight of that as we were running the race.
KYNT: Our mentality going into the game was that win, lose or draw, we were going to learn through this experience, savor it and just plain have fun. We really accomplished that because although we didn't win a million dollars, we won the adventure of a lifetime and that will be with us always. But really and truly, when we saw the advertisement that "The Amazing Race" was casting we pounced on it right away because all the time I would find out about a sci-fi or fantasy convention or music festival going on in another state, I would call Vyxsin up and go, "There's a great event this weekend, we gotta jump in the car right now! Let's go, let's go, let's go!" Although we hadn't traveled internationally, we were very adept at travel on the fly.

The ending of this episode was bittersweet, however, as one of our other favorite teams ---- the "HIPPIE HIVEMASTERS" as we liked to call them ----- Anita and Arthur ----- lost their "buzz" in more ways than one, as they checked into the pitstop in LAST PLACE and were promptly "STUNG" with the news of their elimination.
During the pre-season publicity for the Amazing Race, Anita and Arthur were clearly one of the most aniticipated, and "talked about" teams, coming up regularly in conversations on internet forums, as well as TV talk shows. They played this First Leg of Amazing Race with confidence, courage, and class. They may not have made it far, in terms of Legs, but their time in the Race was both IMPACTFUL and INSPIRING. Despite the age differential between them and the other contestants, Anita and Arthur arrived to the pitstop only MINUTES after 10th place team Marisa and Brooke [the "DIVORCED DAMSELS"].
Anita and Arthur will be remembered for providing Episode 1 with it's most memorable line. Amidst the hectic confusion in Brazil, Anita exclaimed, "BEES ARE MUCH CALMER THAN ALL OF THIS!!!"

If you read through the Vyxsin and Kynt blog about AR13ep.1 to the end, it says "They will have a crucial time advantage over the other 9 teams, should they use it effectively." I do not understand it, because it looked like Ken and Tina finished about 5 minutes behind Nick and Starr. I also thought that Terence and Sarah and Mark and Bill were not far behind.
The finish time of Nick and Starr per their Insider clip was "1 hour 10 means after they started" on April 24, which means it is 1010 with them being in the 9:00am release group. Add 12 hours and you have 2210 for pitstop release. It will take 5 minutes to get back from Forte Sao Marcelo and an unknown amount of time to flag down a taxi. Then it is a straight shot 12 miles up the coast road BA099 to Magelhaes International Airport. At that time of night traffic should be light. I am guessing that they could be there betwen 2245 and 2300. If on the earlier side of that range then they could get on GOL 1604 SSA FOR 2310 0055. If not, they will get bunched with all other teams going on GOL 3366 0230 0415. However, if successful they will have a 3 hour 20 minute lead. It may not be possible for any other team to do the same, but Ken and Tina, Terence and Sarah and Mark and Bill could theoretically do it. Any teams that wants to try is going to have to really hustle(not a problem for the first 3 of these teams and we'll see about Mark and Bill). If a team even stops to check on flight times, they are not going to make it(but would not know that because they should not have access to any schedules at the pitstop since they don't know where they are going.

They will be appearing in the Feb 19 BONES episode, so set your DVR's now!
They shot several scenes but of course don't know what will actually survive the cuts to make the final episode, but you can hopefully look for Kynt in the SCI FI AUCTION as one of the bidders for the "Excalibur"!!

The Amazing Race Blog: Kynt & Vyxsin’s Pink And Black Blast - Falling Wood & Sliding Sleds in SIBERIA
Hello Everyone!
SOOOOOOOOOOO sorry for the TARDY Blog, but our Laptop took a nose-dive in Anchorage, Alaska and is now RIP…………
Life on the road without your computer is not fun. It’s even less fun when you are trying to complete your Blog LOL.
Now that we are back home let’s get caught up here!
Sunday night’s Episode #4 of The Amazing Race took our teams on a chilly quest through SIBERIA! Let’s get started with today’s BLOG!
***************************************
EPISODE 4 —– Siberian Survival
***************************************
The show began with teams departing from the Pitstop in Transylvania, en route to Krasnoyarsk, Siberia. Mel & Mike being the first team to arrive at the Pitstop in the previous episode, were the first to depart
As teams took taxis to the airport, once again CELL PHONES came into play as teams borrowed them from their drivers to help book flights. In one of the episode’s funnier moments, Mark & Michael inadvertently called Jaime & Cara…who PRETENDED to be airline ticket agents LOL
When the smoke cleared, the 8 remaining teams made arrangements to reach Siberia via 4 different connecting cities:
*Connecting through Munich, Germany — Tammy & Victor, Jaime & Cara, Margie & Luke
*Connecting through Frankfurt, Germany — Mel & Mike, Amanda & Kris
*Connecting through Sofia, Bulgaria — Kisha & Jen, Mark & Michael
*Istanbul, Turkey — Christie & Jodi
This flight situation was pure CHAOS, as numerous teams missed connections en route to Siberia. The first three teams to set foot in Siberia were Kisha & Jen, Mark & Michael, and Christie & Jodi……
Once in Siberia, teams made their way to the location printed on the ten-ruble note: the Soviet Era Krasnoyarsk Hydroelectric Dam. At the Dam, teams were redirected to the Church of Saint Innokenty. At that church, a DETOUR awaited. The choice was STACK or CONSTRUCT. In Stack, teams would need to stack up a pile of firewood in a proper arrangement. In Construct, teams would need to construct a set of traditional wood shutters, take them to a house designated with a Repairs Needed sign, and install them into the home.
On the surface, STACK seemed like the easier of the two choices. It’s just stacking wood. No big deal, right? This task proved to be a nightmare, as the wood was impossible to work with. Jen compared the task to the game JENGA. Kisha & Jen and Christie & Jodi were neck and neck in this task, while Mark & Michael threw in the towel and went over to the CONSTRUCT task.
Finally, teams from the other connecting flights began to arrive in Siberia.

A NEW TWIST —- THE BLIND U-TURN
**********************************************
Kisha & Jen were the first team to complete the Detour and received a clue directing them to the Museum of the book “The Last Bow” where a BLIND U-TURN awaited! You will recall from past seasons that a U-Turn
allows one team to “turn” another team, that is forcing the victim team to return to the Detour point and complete the OTHER Detour task that they skipped. In this new “Blind” version, the team who enacts
the U-Turn on their victim remains ANONYMOUS, not a single other team will know “who did it.”
The first team to arrive at the Blind U-Turn was Kisha & Jen, who decided not to use it since they were in first place. Their next destination would be the Bobrovy Log Park.
Tammy & Victor, Jaime & Cara, Margie & Luke, Mel & Mike, and Amanda & Kris all arrived at the Detour almost simultaneously and chose STACK. In almost “Three Stooges” fashion, the wood just kept falling over again and again and again. Each of these 5 teams except for Jaime & Cara switched over to CONSTRUCT.
Margie & Luke completed the Detour and rushed to the Blind U-Turn. They made a major decision at this point —– as they activated the U-Turn AGAINST Amanda & Kris, in order to assist the survival of Jaime
& Cara! Meanwhile, Kisha & Jen were the first to arrive at Bobrovy Log Park where they were confronted with a ROADBLOCK. In this week’s Roadblock, one team member had to BOBSLED along a course at speeds up to 50 miles per hour. While sledding, the team member would need to watch for seven letters posted along the path, and then unscramble those letters to spell the name of a famous Russian writer (who would turn out to be Chekhov!)
Kisha volunteered to tackle this and she sled bravely. However, at the bottom of the hill, she had only located six letters. So, she had to head back up the hill to try again.
At this point, Kisha & Jen and Christie & Jodi were NECK-IN-NECK at the Roadblock…..vying for that First Place finish!
Both teams struggled to unscramble the name….with Kisha & Jen spelling CHEKHOV before the blondes, and receiving instructions to head to the Pitstop at the Krasnoyarsk Theater of Musical Comedy.
This was yet another “photo finish” moment, as Kisha & Jen and Christie & Jodi searched the Theater for Phil’s Mat, with the BLONDES barely beating the sisters!

BLONDE AMBITION —– CHRISTIE & JODI SCORE FIRST PLACE FINISH
Christie & Jodi were visibly overjoyed to score first place. For their victory, Phil rewarded the girls with motorcycles. It was great to see Christie & Jodi’s hard work and FAIR game-play rewarded. They have been survivors thus far but in Siberia they excelled above all others from the flight booking to the physical tasks!
Back at the Detour, teams continued to struggle………
At the Construct task, Mark & Michael now teamed up with Amanda & Kris and Mel & Mike. The threesome searched the streets for the home in need of repairs. In the funniest line of the episode, Mike remarked “It was like a caravan of idiots.”
Meanwhile, Tammy & Victor fared much better then last episode, checking into the Pitstop in third place.
At the Roadblock, poor Luke struggled with the task of unscrambling the letters. After numerous tries and a mound of frustration, he succeeded.
At the detour, it was MEL who finally found the “house needed repairs” enabling the three lost teams to complete the Detour task.

AMANDA & KRIS —— DISCOVER BAD NEWS
*********************************************************
This moment was truly difficult to watch.
Amanda & Kris were CRUSHED to discover at the sign that they had been U-Turned. As hard of a realization as this was, the duo REFUSED to give up and returned to the Detour point to now complete the difficult STACK task.
They tried to discern who it was that U-Turned them and guessed that it might have been Kisha & Jen…….
Team after team checked into the Pitstop, as Amanda & Kris struggled to catch up.

U-TURN TO OBLIVION —— AMANDA & KRIS ELIMINATED

Sadly, Amanda & Kris never recovered from the loss of time they endured due to the U-Turn.
It was truly sad to see such a confident, carefree team eliminated. They had all the ingredients for success —– athleticism, great teamwork, and drive. They had played the game fairly and had avoided drama with other teams.
We felt like they were killed off before their time.
At Phil’s Mat, the duo spoke of how much they thoroughly enjoyed the Race experience and how “ridiculously in love” they have remained.
Amanda & Kris —- we thank you for the entertainment you provided us all with and for your impressive performances, even in light of the U-Turn.

*The GIRLS are on top —- it’s great to see Christie & Jodi and Kisha & Jen OWNING this leg of the Race.
*Friendships certainly go a long way in the Amazing Race. Margie & Luke’s decision to U-Turn Amanda & Kris was invoked with Cara & Jamie in mind.
*Margie & Luke activated the Blind U-Turn…..now that they are at the Pitstop, will they reveal this to the other teams or will they “play innocent”? Whatever they decide will have long-reaching consequences on the social dynamic of the teams.
*We are especially curious to read the Fancast.com interview with Amanda & Kris, to find out if they indeed knew (post-race) who U-Turned them…..or if they discovered this for the first time on this past Sunday night!

K/V and Kynt's parents went to the send off of Phil on his ride across America.
MS research is a cause close to Kynt's heart, as his own Dad has MS, and new research and therapies have made a big difference in his life.
