03/25 "We're Going To Trade You For Food Now."

We were in Africa, and the Pit Stop location had to get moved because of logistics. We'd taken a flight to the next location, packed up about forty bags into a propeller charter flight and flew two hours to the next location. As soon as we landed, we got a phone call to say the teams had been held up. They were never gonna make it to the pit stop where we were at. We'd just unloaded all the bags in the middle of the night. So they asked the flight crew if they would fly us back the next morning, and the crew said no; they were gonna go back. So we had to load all the bags back on the plane, take the two hour flight back again, then go out and in the middle of the night for the pit stop, having not been to bed at all. There was no facility for any of us, like chairs or any of that. So at one point there was 12 of us, cameramen and production people, all tightly packed onto the mat, which was lying in a grassy area, being absolutely annihilated at 3:00 am by mosquitoes

Most probably the quote is said to a lady... by someone from the last place team? That is, if Episode 5 was a NEL, and the "No money from Phil" rule was brought back and applied to the last place team.
Or, no money was given at the start of the leg, and ala Duke/Lauren, one team was too careless when it came to their money and they were short of cash? If this was the case, and Teri/Ian had not been spending their money wisely, then it could be a reason why they're eliminated here... if Episode 5 was a NEL, that is.

When I was travelling in the wilds of Africa (in my younger days ;)), my friend was offered a pretty good trade of some rather fine camels and a few goats in exchange for me at one point...(a little later and he might have taken them up on it! :rotf:)
So maybe it is something like that? Maybe the Masai really want Charla?! Or their own personal BQ! :happy:
Or maybe just a joke in response to the whole bargaining --trade culture there. I have a very nice carved sculpture that I got in "trade" for a pair of sunglasses...

It's an interesting idea, Peach, because the Maasai (intro caps) still practice the reverse dowry or "bride-price." A Maasai man can have more than one wife as long as he can pull the cows out of his wallet. (for Charla and Mirna, though, there would have to be an agreement up front: all sales final, no refunds or exchanges :happy:)

??? I can't make out the wording on this one...what does it say? Can this picture be zoomed bigger?
What is that on the sketch of the arm? The medical side of me looks at it as an anatomical drawing with veins and artries...but then it could be a sketch of some kind of skin markings....maybe someone from each team is going to have to get that on their arm?
I'm old enough to remember the old game show Concentration but if it's the one drawing plus the other drawing (plus the words) to solve what it says, I need a bigger photo.
It may not be something significant but it's a way of wasting some time before tonight's show (ep 5) comes on, especially if it's running late. :trampb:

The thing about the Fast Forward is you have to be the first to get to it.
Look at last season, the team that was twice marked for elimination on episodes right before the Fast Forwards were available were to slow to get to it on one time. ANd only got to do it the 2cd time, because the Cho's convinced the BQ's that if they didn't bea the Cho's getting their they would lose time backtracking. And even then teh Cho's had to decide to let Mary & David go for it.

There is a tramp steamer (no not the African Queen :lol:) that runs on Lake Malawi--I've also found dhows, canoeing, and kayaking so far.

I think this shat was taken in the rotation joint of the passenger loading ramp.
Definitely not Maputo or Lilongwe. Tarmac stairways for those airports.
If the flight is the one I picked then this should be J-burg.

The Jumping Dance ties us to the Maasai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maasai). But they are not in Malawi are they?
So maybe Slowhatch is on to something and Lilongwe is just one more connection.

:-\ FWIW, the "high seas adventure" suggests a coastal country, BUT Malawi is landlocked (as I don't consider lakes to be "high seas"). So Malawi may not be the final destination, with the racers connecting through J-burg on Air Malawi to destinations yet unknown. ???

The logo thing on the map is Nampula, apparently a regional/nation hub; to get to Joburg from Maputo you'd have to go through Nampula, which doesn't help our purpose. Chateau's match still makes the best explanation; teams get to Joburg (somehow) and from there to Malawi. Somewhere in the offing is the giant slowdown which forced the pitstop to be moved back.

So far we know the Roadblock has something to do with the Maasai men ..hitting your mark etc..
then we have the night confessional with Uchenna & Joyce which fits in with the Phil interview which I won't repeat again so yeah I agree Slowhatch that this is where Phil was at the Pitstop at 3am, grassy area, mosquito's etc ..
So the Roadblock comes last, probably near the Pitstop ..and the one of the Detour options something to do with the Sea adventure unless of course there is a Fast Forward and Shmirna takes it but that doesn't jive with the clue "Charla & Mirna gamble on an incredibly risky move that could mean the difference between life and death in the race." and B:) B:) B:) g'nite :waves:

I have a possible explanation. Or, at least a way to get teams to Dar Es Salaam. Say teams fail to get the 7 am flight to J-berg. Then they miss the direct flights fro J-berg to Dar Es Salaam. And they miss the indirect ones via Air Malawi through Blantyre. So they can't get out of J-berg until December 3rd.
An Air Malawi flight out of J-berg can only go to Lilongwe or to Blantyre. And it only goes to Lilongwe on Saturday (December 2nd was a Saturday). And there are no Air Malawi flights from Lilongwe to Dar Es Salaam. So missing the 7 am flight forces the flight we see in the preview to be the one going to Blantyre and therefore sending teams ultimately to Dar Es Salaam.

My thoughts:
1. Mirna & Charla do a FF
2. This is just an "outside the box" idea. It may be possible that Eric and Danielle got into the plane when they had already been told the plane was full. The way Danielle saw the situation is that they did find seats so they should have been able to keep them and stay on the plane.---Based on 9/11 stuff (and I haven't flown in 28 yrs) would it be possible for them to get through without actually being checked in?
3. Is this the leg where they can't make it to the planned Pit Stop?

There have been several speculations on the EP5 thread about air travel for EP6 on Air Malawi. I am going to offer my speculations, based on my intensive analysis of the entire Air Malawi African route structure and timetable:
1. Teams will have hit the Maputo pitstop the afternoon of Friday Dec.1 and be able to catch an early morning flight TM301 to Johannesburg departin 0700 arriving 0800.
2. The only place they can go on Air Malawi (a necessity based on the pictures we have seen) is to Blantyre on QM202 departing 1425 arriving 1635. At that point, there is only one other place they could continue on to and that is Lilongwe. I don't think they do that, although they might. Blantyre is the major air hub for Africa and Lilongwe is the air hub for inside Malawi.
3. Choices over the following 2 days for flights are to:
a. Harare, Zimbabwe 1020 Saturday morning arriving 1140 QM141
b. Mzuzu, Malawi 1600 Saturday afternoon arriving 1650
c. Lusaka, Zambia 0845 Sunday morning arriving 1025
d. Dar-es-Salaam 1500 Sunday afternoon arriving 1740 QM6202
e. continuation of the same flight to Nairobi arriving at 1915
What does all this mean? I think it means that the pit stop for episode 6 will be somewhere near Blantyre Malawi. I further think it means that the pitstop for episode 7 will be in the vicinity of either Dar-es-Salaam or Nairobi. My guess is Dar-es-Salaam. The rationale is tha t you can't go anywhere else by air and get back and then get to Poland easily. Nairobi has excellent connections via Amsterdam and Dar-Es-Salaam can reach Amsterdam via Nairobi. The Amazing Race is likely to leave Africa from one of those two cities. If you think differently, speak up.

One quick thought on why there most likely isn't a Fast forward. If the pitstop were moved and there was a Fast Forward what pitstop did the Fast Forward clue send the team to ?

??? Isn't that what they did on Survivor the season in Africa? They put an arrow in the cow's neck to get the blood to spew out...I can't remember if they put in milk. This sounds familiar...

In the promo you can see Uchenna struggling with the ROADBLOCK (Throwing axes or something at a target) and it is dark out. So the Roadblock is running late. TPTB are trying to show that the Uchenna and Joyce team, marked for elimination, is running late (but I think everyone is running late according to the info we have about changing the pit stop).
It looks like everyone is running late and the teams won't be able to catch some flight which would take them to the pit stop, so TPTB have changed it back to some non-descript open field.
All of this seems to indicate that there is NO FAST FORWARD in this ep. If there were a FF, then the team might have already made the flight to the pit stop.
AH, perhaps Eric and Dee took the FF and are on the plane to the pit stop, but then TPTB get the word back to the airline people to kick E and D off the plane since they have now decided to change the pit stop location.
Another possibility is that E and D were boarded onto the plane in a "stand by" capacity meaning that they would have to give up their seats (actually four seats) if the party holding tickets showed up at the gate.

Yes it does make sense, U/J & C/M could both be going for the FF, && Schmirna gets there 1st && U/J are pushed to the back so by the time they get to the roadblock && pitstop its dark.

Eric/Danielle's roadblock choices seem very odd. You'd think beefy Eric would do all the physical tasks, but..
Office Room Roadblock (easy)- Eric
Physical, fish roadblock- Danielle
Looking through letters (easy)- Eric
Holding a rope connected to a rat (easy)- Eric
Throwing some big ax thing- Danielle??
Not anything against Danielle, but I'd think Eric would be doing the more "demanding" roadblocks! Whatever they're doing, it seems to be working!

I think that is Mirna, because if you look at the web preview at 23 seconds you see that same girl walking, with Charla right behind.
And that adds up to them being in the front because look at the sky there, and then look at the sky in the Chas pictures, it's slightly darker.

I have a feeling it's going to be another 2nd for the BQs, they seem to be following a pattern ... last season in episode four they sucked, then after episode five it was constant firsts and seconds !! :D

After being away for 9 hours, I return with geat resolve. First, kudos to CHATEAU for catching and correcting my error about Saturday vs. Sunday for the Air Malawi flights Johannesburg to Blantyre:

PW730 0800 to 0820 Monday Dec. 4
If they gave me a choice, I would get on a boat and get moving toward Zanzibar Island.
3. Since it takes about 24 hours to reach Poland from Zanzibar and since teams need to be arriving in Poland on Dec. 7 to keep on the schedule we know of later in the race, there could be one more pitstop but it has to be in Dar-es-Salaam or more likely Nairobi(because it's the major hub for nonstop flights to Amsterdam and Zurich) due to the tight timing.

Maybe Eric/Danielle switched from Gathering (logs) to Hunting (throwing ax). There is a definite picture of Danielle setting to throw in the dark.
eta: However, when looking at pictures and video again it is a BQ with the logs and guy with striped shirt. Daniel has on a top with straps, not a halter and Danielle's hat is dark, not white like the BQ have on.

Same club, different tribe: the Maasai call it a rungu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rungu_%28weapon%29) (also here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_(weapon)#Knobkierie)). Mswood (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,11752.msg179749/topicseen.html#msg179749) had it a couple of days ago. The ones in the cap look handmade, with the weight of the knob off-center of shaft; they would make lousy throwing weapons.

The 1st pic looks like Kandice, but I used my Photoshop to zoom in on the 2nd pic, && it looks to me more like Kandice than Danielle. The reason I'm saying this is because @ first i thought that the 2nd pic is Danielle. BUT I'm not 100% sure that it isn't Danielle, because if you notice the sky is darker in the 2nd picture than it is in the 1st. If in fact it is Danielle, this would make perfect sense.

The bottom picture to me looks like Danielle doing the Detour that Dustin and Kandice are doing. The reason I say it looks like Danielle is because the body seems a bit larger then Kandice's, and the sky is a lot darker.
But then again, they both have pink hats on, and I can't tell if the second picture is from the Road block or the detour.

Trying to figure out which airline several teams were on is too simple. Visual evidence shows it to be Air Malawi. However, that's where it gets very mysterious. Why should teams be on Air Malawi? The only possible reason can be that other airline with better flights between Johannesburg and Dar-Es-Salaam were booked and unavailable, possibly for multiple days. The release from the pitstop in Maputo should have been just after midnight on Saturday Dec. 2. Every team should have easily gotten the 7am flight from Maputo to Johannesburg. Air Malawi does not connect to Dar-Es-Salaam on Saturdays, but several other airlines do:
SAA 188 nonstop 1005 to 1435
TC (Air Tanzania) 1350 to 1830
and both of those code share with the other.
Connecting flights from DAR to ZNZ were also available:
Zanair (B4) 104 1545 to 1605
PW450 1600 to 1740
B4 116 1840 to 1900
TC7909 1900 to 1925
There was even this 1-stop flight from Johannesburg to Zanzibar, stopping in DAR:
SAA 7197 1350 to 1925
or a connection of SAA188/B4 104 to get from JNB to ZNZ that Saturday. But it didn't happen. Why not? I'd love to know.
On Sunday, all the same flights are still possibilities. The 8th best(it's really probably 4th due to the duplication of code sharing) option is:
QM202 depart JNB 1200 arrive Blantyre 1410
QM6202 depart Blantyre 1500 arrive DAR 1740
B4 116 depart 1840 arrive ZNZ 1900
Why did they end up on these flights? If anyone has a theory other than full alternative flights, please speak up.

I really think we are looking at 2 separate flights:
In puddins upper picture, T/I are in the middle/window seats, and there is no logo on the seat protector cloth.
In the lower picture, they are in the aisle/middle seats and there is a logo in the corner of the seat protector cloth.

No it still looks like the same flight. Look closely at the first pix, Ian and Teri are indeed in the aisle and middle seat since there is no seat next to Teri as it is an exit row. Note the exit door one seat (missing) to Teri's left. The emblem on the seat rag is just covered up by the passenger in that first shot. And in the second shot, Ian and Teri are still in the same seats and the same guy is sitting in the window seat behind them.

:lol: my only point of the picture was to show that T/I were on the same flight as BJ and that they are on different flights than the BQ'S/Chas/ EDEE who are pulled off. Knowing Shmirna took some risky flight that leaves U/J open only because I can't spot them and I'm guessing they are somewhere on that flight with T/I and BJ.

^ If that's the case, peach, then the pit stop is not in Zanzibar? They would have to go back to mainland Africa if the roadblock is indeed there, and the pit stop is just outside Dar Es Salaam. My thoughts are based on the assumption that the pit stop is near the roadblock site, and that the roadblock is after the detour.
Oh, and any news on Phil's preview? It's gonna be posted today, yes? ???

This episode is confusing, because it seems that the Pitstop we will see is possibly not the one that was "meant to be", based on Phil's interview (either this week or next). So where ever it ends up being--it may be somewhat makeshift if this is the pitstop that wasn't. The teams may have been meant to be somewhere else entirely.
I've been thinking that it makes more sense if the Roadblock is NOT on Zanzibar--as the Maasai are more of a mainland tribe. This Village Museum is one of the few places I've found where the teams could see Maasai tribal dancing nearby Dar es Salaam.
I've also been puzzled by Eric's "hunting and gathering" comment--maybe the Roadblock could be two parts and we've only seen the "hunting" (throwing the runga) part so far?
And I'm wondering if the "deep sea adventure" and the shot of Uchenna on the dhow is not a task at all--but possibly just an alternative means of transport from Zanzibar to Dar es Salaam, or vice versa...which may explain why we haven't seen more teams afloat!
So my thoughts are: Zanzibar for the detours (we still have fish/henna hand painting/hair plaiting to cover) :lol:

Some info, but more like comments, about Tanzania transportation from here (http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Africa/Tanzania/Transportation-Tanzania-BR-1.html):
If you want to go by boat from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Town or back you have much choices. There are ferries, catamarans, hydrofoils or you can even go by dhow or governmental boat. There are different prices depending on which boat you take (10 -35 dollar). The boattrip will take 90 minutes at the fast boats and 6 hours at the slowest ones. From Zanzibar Island back to Dar es Salaam we took the fast catamaran called MV ''Seabus'' of Azam Marine, two departures a day. But there are also other good companies. Check the fares and times at the company-offices before you make your choice.
This was our car with wich we drove around Tanzania. It is a Toyota Hiace (older Model), but still in good shape (if you overhear the automatic door closer readjusting after some hard bumps on the road). The roof can be opened, so you have a good view around in the national parks and are still safe from the animals - well, hopefully.... The tires were extremely robust, if a little soft, but I suppose that is better when driving on the gravel roads. The funny thing with that is, that if you are steering, it actually takes a moment until the car changes direction. It´s like steering a boat.
I believe it's the same car in the preview where Dustin/Kandice were pushing a cart and Danny(?) yelled from the van.

Since we see C/M on a boat with D/O, i imagine that C/M, D/O, D/K all get to Tanzania at the same time since we see a shot of D/O(?) yelling "GO GO GO!" to the BQs, so I think first place is up for grabs between any of these teams.
Also U/J get there just as the sun is setting so they might not be that far behind after all.

Michael, they're doing the Detour here. Dustin's behind her. And the two d00ds helping them (the one in red and the other in vertical stripes) are in another picture with them pushing the cart. This was the guess I got wrong back in page 4. :groan:

I'm thinking Mirna is actually supposed to be to the left of Danny. Counting the baskets, Mirna has two baskets (1 and 2) to her left, while Danny (1, 2, and 3) has three. So Mirna could have gotten her rungus from Basket 2, and Danny from Basket 3. But then what's strange is looking at the Mirna shot, the baskets look smaller than the ones in the Danny shot. Camera trick, maybe? I don't know who's ahead though. Chateau would be good at finding this out based on the sun's position, I believe.

Well, PEACH, if you've been reading my posts (which I believe you do), you would know that I have speculated that a boat trip is one of two ways I think teams get from Dar-es-Salaam over to Zanzibar. Whether it's on a dhow or not or called a "deep sea adventure" is not really important since it will be a vital tranportation link. It looks to me that teams that choose this could get to Zanzibar ahead of teams that fly, unless the winds die down.
I absolutely doubt that the "lost pitstop" was as far away as the Serengeti or Ngorogoro. Those are still distinct possiblities for episode 7, although I believe that the pitstop will be closer to Nairobi.

MICHAEL D, the next episode should be in Africa, somewhere within that 2 hour range. The one after that is Warsaw Poland and that is over 12 hours away. There is no possiblity of flying back from Poland to East Africa to move the pit stop for Episode 7. We're not certain, but the probability is pretty high. The conjunction of close distances between pitstops is available nowhere else except between Hong Kong and Macau and that will not involve any flying.

Michael, thats a good question? If Phil had to go out in the middle of the night to the new/grassy pitstop, 3am, what became of the daylight teams ( C/M D/O BQ's) ?
We were in Africa, and the Pit Stop location had to get moved because of logistics.
We'd taken a flight to the next location, packed up about forty bags into a propeller charter flight and flew two hours to the next location.
As soon as we landed, we got a phone call to say the teams had been held up. They were never gonna make it to the pit stop where we were at. We'd just unloaded all the bags in the middle of the night.
So they asked the flight crew if they would fly us back the next morning, and the crew said no; they were gonna go back.
So we had to load all the bags back on the plane, take the two hour flight back again, then go out and in the middle of the night for the pit stop, having not been to bed at all.
There was no facility for any of us, like chairs or any of that. So at one point there was 12 of us, cameramen and production people, all tightly packed onto the mat, which was lying in a grassy area, being absolutely annihilated at 3:00 am by mosquitoes

Another thing to consider is that Charla and Mirna not being in first place seems to make the web clue of "Charla and Mirna gamble on an incredibly risky move that could either make or break the race" because maybe they are behind U/J, E/D and then C/M, along with D/O and the BQs get on another flight, leaving T/I and B/J to battle it out for survival.
This is really unlikely though - I still think C/M are leading, followed by the Chas, BQs, and the rest.

I played with this last night--and if this is dawn not dusk, it makes sense why O/J are so happy in their taxi afterwards( in the dark), which you would think they wouldn't be if they were that far behind.
But--I couldn't quite talk myself into figuring out how Ch/Mirna got behind again if they are supposed to have some "live or die" moment.
My brain hurts--think I'll go swim with the dolphins! :lol:

Phil interview: So we had to load all the bags back on the plane, take the two hour flight back again, then go out and in the middle of the night for the pit stop, having not been to bed at all.
There was no facility for any of us, like chairs or any of that. So at one point there was 12 of us, cameramen and production people, all tightly packed onto the mat, which was lying in a grassy area, being absolutely annihilated at 3:00 am by mosquitoes

that STILL doesn't make sense because if Phil said the pit stop was at 3AM then that would have C/M, O/D, BQs, and J/B checking in a very long time after E/D and U/J, and I just don't see that happening, especially with the web clue of C/M doing something that can "make or break the race"

It's funny because this morning I was kind of sad that we knew to much about this episode and now we are back at square one (kind of).

Phil never said the Pitstop was at 3AM--just that they were there waiting at 3AM which could mean team arrivals anytime after that...maybe makes a dawn arrival more likely than a dusk arrival though...
FF team usually skips all tasks except for their own one thing and then goes directly to the Pitstop. I don't remember a FF where the special task was the same as the other team's roadblock though.
U/J seemed awfully happy!
What about where that Roadblock is? They seemed to have quite an audience which might suggest a school or orphanage of some sort--back to Iris Ministries? One of their schools is on Pemba--home of dhow trips...
And the Pitstop must be somewhere else? Since we see U/J happily going off somewhere in a taxi?
And I'm still wondering how far 2 hours of flying time could have gotten them? Certainly elsewhere in Tanzania for a safari type experience, or maybe Kenya--although I tend to think they would avoid Nairobi because that is such a major tourist crossroads and they are trying to stay off the beaten track this season.

Few things, it cant be dawn, EDEE and UJ have confessionals at night so they arrived at the pit stop at night. So yea this cant be the order of arrival being teams are doing the RB in the middle of the day.
SEcondly it looks to me [this is in general not the placeings above] UJ are ahead of Eric and Dee even with the penalty because it seems still a little light out in their confessional, for ED not so much.

Also im not buying the U/J in first scenario.. U/J and EDEE both have their confessionals recorded at night.. and if they arrived early morning they would have had it done in daylight..
Also, didnt someone tell me that the boat came before the roadblock? That doesnt make sense because on the boat its middayish and at the roadblock PPARENTLY its dawn.. B:) :-\ ???

I've been confused about this time thing as well. Also, didn't Phil say they had just unloaded the plane in the middle of the night and then had to reload it? I don't see how this would work with the Cha's, C/M & the BQs completing all tasks during the day and the crew unpacking at the aborted pitstop in the middle of the night.

I haven't seen any shots that have good shadows and we know where they are. If you see some that you think have that then post it. All the dusk/dawn shots... I'm no better than anybody else at guessing the time.

PUDDIN, in the history of The Amazing Race there has never been anything but straight to the pitstop for the Fast Forward winner. The only exception to that is AR1 when the Guidos decided to have leisure time in Bangklok instead of taking the taxi to the pitstop 500 miles south(due apparently to spending their money in Paris).

PUDDIN, in the history of The Amazing Race there has never been anything but straight to the pitstop for the Fast Forward winner. The only exception to that is AR1 when the Guidos decided to have leisure time in Bangklok instead of taking the taxi to the pitstop 500 miles south(due apparently to spending their money in Paris).
You are right you win and so on whatever.. lets move on.

Me thinks we have several real problems with this ep. Lots of confusing times: is it early morning or late afternoon? Does the race cover several days or just one hellva long one? Lots of shots of people in taxicabs, airplanes, and waiting around airports, but not much action. So we are pretty sure about the ROADBLOCK (throwing the thingamabob) but what about the DETOUR? Carrying logs in a cart somewhere seems to be one task, but what is the other?
In the promos we only see Ian and Teri in various modes of conveyance, but not doing anything interesting.
Uchenna and Joyce have to either win the leg or beat someone else by at least 30 minutes. We see them doing the Roadblock, but is it early morning or early evening?
And where is the pitstop?
So there does not seem to be a Fast Forward, as we see most teams doing at least one of the tasks which other teams are doing. UNLESS Ian and Teri do the FF and then somehow still don't get to the church in time.
So with less than 48 hours to go, who has some good ideas of how this all works out so that Uchenna and Joyce are saved and Ian and Teri are Philiminated?

Here's another off-topic public service announcement. On this Sunday night (and probably the next 3 Sunday nights after), the Discovery Channel is showing their new 11-part PLANET EARTH series. I saw the preview and it looks like a winner. You will need two recording machines and cable or equivalent feeds since it starts at 8pm. This Sunday there will be 3 one hour episodes, Pole to Pole, Mountains and Deept Ocean. I don't know about future Sundays yet. The reviewer of this was ecstatic, labelling it as "brilliant, the most amazing nature series I've ever seen."
Bizarre Foods: Ecuador repeats tonight at 10pm on the Travel Channel. See my post in Maps, Maps, Maps for a description. I highly recommend it as a travelogue, not for the unusual food.
On Thursday, Travel Channel premieres "1000 Places to See Before You Die" with Alaska at 9pm and Italy at 10pm. Newlyweds won a Travel Channel contest and travel the world for 5 months. It could be interesting.

Pemba Island
The capital Chake Chake stands at the top of a beautiful mangrove inlet. Being basically a one street town, if it were on the mainland it would be looked upon as a village. Life here on Pemba is incredibly slow and relaxed, even here in Chake Chake and it is still possible to sit by the side of the road and drink fresh coffee bought from a traditional Arabic coffee seller.
The people in Pemba are incredibly friendly. They are so unused to seeing foreigners that they are open and welcoming to all. In outlying areas children may burst out crying at the sight of the strange wasungu (white people), especially at the sight of long blonde hair. Wherever you pass you will be accompanied by the screams of jambo! jambo!

Getting to Fundu Lagoon is part of the fun, and involves a light aircraft flight, a minibus ride and a private speedboat transfer!
You start by catching one of 2 daily Cessna flights, with Coastal or Zan Air, from Zanzibar (or from Tanga) to Pemba’s Karume airport. Failing that, chartering your own little plane is not exorbitant. The resort staff meet you at Pemba airport, with a minibus-taxi to take you to the coast near Chake Chake, where you hop into a waiting yellow speedboat. This whisks you in 15-20 minutes to the resort itself, set deep in the calm inlet of Wambaa.
Alternatively you can catch the ferry from Stone Town to Pemba’s Mkoani port (but this is slow and rather unreliable), and the resort speedboat from there.

Getting to Pemba
BY AIR
Pemba can be reached by air either from Unguja (Zanzibar Island) or from the mainland cities of Dar es Salaam or Tanga. Local air charter companies run daily flights most days of the week. If you are in a group it may prove cheaper per person to charter a flight privately through one of the companies. Alternatively, these same companies often have spare seats on certain charter flights and sell these to individuals for between US$50 and US$100. Flights from Dar es Salaam inevitably go via Zanzibar and may also minvolve a change of plane. There is also a direct flight between Tanga and Pemba which is slightly cheaper at around US$60. The airport tax for flights out of Pemba is US$2.50 per person and is also payable in local currency (TSh).
By Dhow
Most of the dhow traffic to / from Pemba is between Tanga on the mainland. There is very little if any dhow traffic between Zanzibar and Pemba, and those that do travel arrive in Mkoani. This is mostly due to the fact that it is illegal for tourists to travel to Pemba from Zanzibar via dhow. Dhow trips are available from Tanga but services are erratic. They arrive mostly in Mkoani or Wete and run around US$15.

Jesus, God knows I would much rather have Eric & Danielle towards teh front of the pack. But I seriously doubt it.
The comments about hte Pit Stop and the 3am time frame, could be the fact that some flights (thuss teams) are so seperated that they have to be out set up at the Pit Stop again very late at night. It doesn't mean that hey couldn't have checked in tan earlier set of teams, before that.
Unless I am missing something.
People have also said why would Uchenna & Joyce be so happy if they thought they were towards a group in the back.?
On the footage of airplanes do we see Uchenna & Joyce or Eric & Danielle with Teri & Ian or the Guidos (since We know they are on the same flight)? If not, perhaps htey know there is a group that is even further back( and more then the 30 miute penality).
Or it could just be the lovely children.
Remember if their original season they thought they were last and were depressed until the orphanage and then they were all smiles to the Pit Stop, even thinking they were last (unless I am remembering that episode wrong).

But, sadly I've got nuttin on making a match to this shot that was Dave Price's elimination interview of the BQs. It aired on December 4th. Dave said "I caught up with them just a couple of days ago and talked about their experience." He was present for their interview.
It may have been filmed on December 2nd in Maputo while teams had yet another 36 hour pit stop. It may have been filmed while they waited for their December 3rd flight through Malawi (if that was their flight, I don't know). But I am pretty sure it was not filmed during that 'beach day' overnight wait for the Rat Roadblock (November 30th). That is because their hair is a mess for the rats. Dustin's wide flat ring is on in the interview and in TAR11. Earrings and necklaces (and make up) had to be added for the interview.

K/D are probably on same plane as E/D. E/D's plane has a purple? design on seatback protector. Note for K/D that the black guy is leaning forward and his seatback protector is not plain. Check out the picture showing the seats in front of E/D, I think K/D is 3 rows ahead. This is the row where the steward's chin is.
Also, the screen shot of D/K sitting and WILL is over the top. D/K are wearing the same tops as in the plane picture.
Can't tell for sure about O/D except 1 possible detail. It seems that seats on E/D's plane are higher then the seats in T/I & J/B's seatbacks. Therefore, I think O/D have the higher seatbacks so they are on the same type plane as E/D & K/D.
Does this mean that all 3 teams are taken off and only Danielle freaks about it? Maybe as Phil was being called back the first 3 teams have to be prevented from continuing to the pit stop that's no longer a pit stop. For good TV production is holding off on telling them the reason so that they can film a reaction like Danielle's.
Anyone have a real good idea where the plane is flying from?
Since Danielle and Dustin????? (I get them mixed up) have on different tops I'm thinking they (all teams) have layered clothes and they start with tank top, go to t-shirt, then some type of shirt/blouse/light jacket and so forth. The flight is the first flight and before the challenge Danielle and Dustin? remove t-shirt to be down to tank top.
So 1 team pulled off/3 teams pulled off; beginning of leg/end of leg; moving pit stop/something Eric said that based on local customs was an insult?

OK, everybody appears to be confused on many things. I can't say that I have any answers, but I do have some interesting hypotheses. First, it looks to me now that the Race is going now to Pemba Island, Zanzibar rather than the more obvious (and more travelled) Zanzibar Island, Zanzibar. That makes it quite difficult to get to by air from Dar-Es-Salaam. Here are the choices for Monday Dec. 4:
PW730 departs DAR 0730 arrives ZNZ 0750 B4 601 departs ZNZ 0945 arrives PMA 1020
B4104 departs DAR 1545 arrives ZNZ 1605 B4 603 departs ZNZ 1630 arrives PMA 1700
Now, the alternaitve to get to Pemba is to take surface tranportation from Dar-Es-Salaam to Tanga about 100 miles north, then switch to dhow for the trip across the Zanzibar Channel to Pemba. K/D are probably on same plane as E/D. E/D's plane has a purple? design on seatback protector. Note for K/D that the black guy is leaning forward and his seatback protector is not plain. Check out the picture showing the seats in front of E/D, I think K/D is 3 rows ahead. This is the row where the steward's chin is.
Also, the screen shot of D/K sitting and WILL is over the top. D/K are wearing the same tops as in the plane picture.
Can't tell for sure about O/D except 1 possible detail. It seems that seats on E/D's plane are higher then the seats in T/I & J/B's seatbacks. Therefore, I think O/D have the higher seatbacks so they are on the same type plane as E/D & K/D.
Does this mean that all 3 teams are taken off and only Danielle freaks about it? Maybe as Phil was being called back the first 3 teams have to be prevented from continuing to the pit stop that's no longer a pit stop. According to the previews ONE team gets pulled off the plane and we know that is Eric & Dee. As for your other questions go back to about page 2 of this thread and start there, the plane scenario has been discussed.

It could mean there was 5 teams (10 people), Phil & the greater (2 people) plus the cameramen and production people waiting for the 6th & 7th team (Guido/Teri & Ian) to show up at 3 AM.
Being this is an unplanned pit stop location they may not have accommodations and transportation ready for racers. Although they had at least 2 hours for the production people with the racers to organize something. There was talk in early interviews of Phil &/or Bertram about roughing it. Maybe they are going to have the racers camp without tents.

Trying to place the mystery pitstop...I've been looking through amadeus for 2 hr. flight times from ZNZ. Nairobi is 90-115 minutes away using a small jet in regular scheduled service. Best I could find so far.

what if Phil and Co. went to the "supposed to be pit stop" BEFORE teams started this leg, or just after, and THEN realized that the teams wont be able to get their on time, then went and made a new pit stop.

Puddin The preview says one team hits the breaking point (Danielle) which still could mean 2 other teams were taken off but they didn't hit the breaking point. It's possible (Like a plain yellow pumpkin to become a golden carriage) Sorry, just had to put that in there LOL
I have read and read and read this thread repeatedly over the last few days and I still don't know if they were leaving from Maputo, Jo Burg, in Malawi. A BIG, BIG DUHHHHHHHHHHHH. I just realized it's the Johannesburg O. R. Tambo airport. So it may just be D/E but why is D/K just sitting there (in the airport?) in the middle of a leg? Unless it's a bunching or waiting for a flight, they would be wasting time. In the picture it doesn't look like waiting to board.

If they are really on Pemba or Zanzibar we need to remember that they are on an island and transportation options, especially at night, may be limited. If they are told to go to Dar es Salaam, for instance, for the Pitstop--they may have to wait until daytime in order to get either a flight, a ferry, or even a high speed catamaran in order to get OFF the island. Of course, the pitstop could also be just down the street on island too!
It is always possible that this is where we see the dhow come into play, although based on limited flights INTO the islands at the time they are needed--it is more probable that the dhow is an option to get TO the islands (assuming of course that they are where we hope/think they will be :lol:)!!
Well--think how confused TPTB must have been when they realized the our guys couldn't get to them--makes our "mass confusion" seem a little better!

Pemba/Zanzibar Bits and Pieces:
Henna Painting was originally done in order to cool ones hands and feet. Traditionally, Swahilis perform henna painting for brides and married women only. Various styles of henna painting are available in Zanzibar whose origins range from Sudan, India and Arabia.
it is polite (and much appreciated) to observe local custom by keeping your knees and shoulders covered; this applies to men and women. Be sure to ask for permission before taking pictures of Stone Town residents. This is especially important when the subject of your picture is a woman.
Also inside the Fort are shops and a beauty salon that does henna painting
(refers to Old Arab Fort in Stone Town)
Kangas, the local cloth worn by women over their dresses and covering their heads, are available in every possible color and print ranging from humorous to somber. All Kangas have a message have a message written in Swahili. The different patterns and colors on the kangas also have meaning. Kangas have significance in every major event in a Swahili woman's life from childhood to marriage to motherhood and more. It's a good idea to know what your kanga says because the messages can be strong, for instance one message says, "I may be ugly, but I'm not for sale."

A recent law passed in Tanzania prohibits tourists from travelling in wooden crafts, which prevents tourists from taking dhows to or from the Tanzanian mainland. This law was passed after a German tourist pitched overboard from a dhow and drowned, ruining the fun for the rest of us who might want to spend eight to twelve hours on a wooden boat without shelter from the sun and without food, water, or plumbing facilities. It is a silly law and has silly exceptions such as sunset cruises around Zanzibar harbor such as is offered by Mtoni Marine.
This was apparently in the late 90's and is probably different now because I've found several blogs describing some long and miserable dhow rides between Zanzibar and Dar and Mombasa.
The dhows have no services, toilets, or cafeterias and can be dangerous in high swells. Some people have had lovely dhow rides but if the winds die or are light, your trip can last well over eight hours.
Sea Bus (1 & 2) operated by Azam Marine leaves the Zanzibar Harbor 3 times a day for Dar-es-Salaam. Both cabins are very clean, air-conditioned and with comfortable seating.
Sea Express and Flying Horse are two other ferries between Unguja and Dar. These are the fastest boats to Dar (assuming they're running) and the price is roughly the same as the other ferries. They take anywhere from one and a quarter hours to one and three-quarter hours to reach Dar.
Kizimkazi (broken into two villages just down the road from each other) is well known for the dolphins that live off the shore. There are many boats and captains who will take you out on a dolphin safari. Dolphins are social creatures and will not shy from the boats unless there's a baby with them. Most dolphin safaris result in a good viewing but it is not guaranteed.
Zanzibar, a part of the United Republic of Tanzania, is a series of many islands, the main ones being Unguja and Pemba. The more populated of the two main islands, Unguja, is better known as Zanzibar Island and is home to Stone Town (also known as Zanzibar Town or Zanzibar City),
Pemba, located about 50 Kms north of Unguja, is far less populated. Known also by its Arabic name, Al Khundra meaning Green Island, Pemba is covered in steep hills full of palms, clove and rubber trees, rice paddies and the Ngezi Forest in the north. A Dala-dala is a small pickup truck whose bed has had benches installed around the edges and a roof placed on top. The tailgate has been removed and in its place steps have been installed making the dala-dalas easy to board. Passengers sit on the benches in the trunk-bed as well as whatever available seats are in the cab. Plastic tarps are rolled down from the roof on the outside when it's raining. The roof has a rack where parcels are placed.
Dala-dalas got their name from the Swahili pronunciation of 'dollar'; the original fare was a five-shilling coin the size of a silver dollar.

It is even said that people have traveled from as far as Haiti in order to learn the origins of voodoo. Although its reputation for occult healing and spell casting spreads much farther than Pemba, the locals will deny it emphatically if asked. It is not for public consumption and is revealed to locals only.
There are frequent ferry departures from Unguja to Pemba and the fare is about $30 per person for tourists. The ferries Sepideh and Talieh run several times a week (about a three-hour ride) for which tickets can be purchased at the ports on Unguja or Pemba. There are larger ships such as the Mapinduzi that also go to Pemba but their schedules are erratic and unreliable. At the time of publication (late 90's)it was illegal for tourists to travel in wooden crafts in Tanzanian waters making a dhow journey to Pemba impossible. It is possible to take a dhow from Mombasa to Pemba because Kenyan law does permit tourists to travel in wooden boats. If you're looking for a dhow ride, you may consider something shorter than the six to eight hour sail from Mombasa to Pemba. The dhows don't have catering, can be very dangerous in high swells and there's no way to get out of the sun.
Chake Chake is the largest town on the island (Pemba) and it is the capital. Like Stone Town on Unguja, Chake Chake is located about halfway down the West Coast of the island. It is the only town on Pemba that has a city center feel to it with a central market, a hotel and, albeit small, a strip of shops.

and I'm still on the bandwagon that they hit both Islands, Zanzibar & Pemba and thats where the Dhow comes in and its a long ride and thats why the Chas are napping.
I don't know about the flights only what I read and I don't know what day it is but some of the teams are in their same clothes from EP5 so they did get to do laundry somewhere whether it was a 24 hour pitstop or not and that maybe the case because of the excellent flight charts that Chateau, Slowhatch & apskip provided.
So lets pretend for the sake of arguing that this day starts on DEC 4th
So with that I think it goes something like this..
Chas and BQ's are on the same flight as Eric & Dee ..
Eric & Dee get pulled off that flight for some reason or another, whatever.
We see the Guidos & Teri & Ian on one flight together but also see the Guidos at what I assume is an airport lounge having a drink ( is it Perrier or Heineken?), my thinking is they have caught a much, much later flight so are just taking it in stride and killing time hanging out at the airport probably along with Teri & Ian.
Now we don't see Ucheena & Joyce on any flight at all or do we see Eric & Dee again on a plane.
Could it be that U/J & E/D found a faster way to Dar es Salaam putting them hours ahead of the other teams? Remember Joyce is fairly good at making flight plans as we saw on the insider videos.
U/J & E/D compete the Detour task which is either of the Islands in Zanzibar..they Dhow over to the other island ( I'm guessing here ) and are also carted around in the minibus's.
Next up, Roadblock Dusk.. I'll guess U/J arrive first with Eric & Dee in tow and Uchenna jumps for joy with the Maasai men that he is #1.
In the previews we see Danielle when it is darker and from what it looks like she is struggling with the Roadblock but later at the Pitstop confessional Eric is making light of it and comments about Danielle's " hunting & gathering skills " and she laughs.
U/J & E/D hop onto the minibus and are the first 2 teams to arrive at the makeshift pitstop.
Now Phil has radio contact with production all the time and perhaps knows the other teams are close so he waits ..no place to sit, no facilities..so he makes do by napping on the mat with the rest of the production.
Somewhere the Chas & Charla & Mirna are held up and we know they are working together because Phil tells us so.
Stick the BQ's in the mix there somewhere. Maybe the Dhow has HoursOfOperation and they completed the Detours to late for the Dhows to take them to the other island?
Anyway in the morning ( thanks Chateau ) we see Charla/Mirna & the Cha's performing the Roadblock and the BQ's are probably in the mix somewhere
Now something tells me by process of elimination that the two underdog teams as Phil said are racing not to be the last team and of course this has to be the Guido's and Teri/Ian.

Do Rungu throwing at the Village Museum outside Dar es Salaam
All take a Dhow and travel to Pemba or Unguja.
Roadblock is transport herbs or make fish stained glass.
Pit stop is somewhere on the island they do Roadblock on.
It's almost a given that J/B & T/I are last 2. Other than that there appears to be 2 groups and they can flip flop either way.
I feel D/K breeze through the herb transport and end up in first (I have to say that since they are my favorite and I want them in 1st.)
Who knows, we'll find out tonight. I've gone cross-eyed trying to figure out possibilities. Going to bed, watching TARAS and going to work. :zz:

I don't know why they are on the cart, or what the BQ's are doing. Perhaps they have made a delivery of some sort and are returning the cart. Or, they had to assemble the cart and push it somewhere's else. I have no idea. But after many slo-mo runs of the tape it sure looks like their two backpacks. More confusion for the fire.

According to the application, potential teams must be able to spend up to 12 days in Los Angeles in April and be prepared to spend from 30 to 40 days on the road in the period June - August. So if this holds up we may be able to hobnob at Bran's Castle in Transylvania in mid-june!!!!!!(If no TAR teams show up then, I sure would like to chase the wench of wenchs, puddin, around a bit in Dracula's Castle)

There appear to me to be three logs on the cart as well as their backpacks. What can't be determined from the clip is if they dump the entire load.

I'm not sure if my scenario is right..its just a guess and really I could be WAY out there wrong about the arrival order of the teams but it was fun guessing no matter what the outcome is and to me it will make it more exciting to watch. It just maybe that we were right the first time around and the BQ's/Chas/Chmirna are teams 1,2, & 3. But why Ucheena/Joyce & Eric & Dee are doing the Roadblock whether its dusk or dawn is still a mystery? They are either way ahead or almost 24 hours behind the leaders? Really I have no idea :umn: ! then Phil & crew go out in the middle of the night for the pit stop, having not been to bed at all.

I've read the last few pages many times and I'm still lost. So now I'm just hoping the lost pitstop is not on this leg. :rotf:
HAKUSHU8, on March 23 I stated to MICHAEL D "the next episode should be in Africa, somewhere within that 2 hour range. The one after that is Warsaw Poland and that is over 12 hours away. There is no possiblity of flying back from Poland to East Africa to move the pit stop for Episode 7. We're not certain, but the probability is pretty high. The conjunction of close distances between pitstops is available nowhere else except between Hong Kong and Macau and that will not involve any flying." It is probable that this is the lost pitstop leg.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the BQs are actually ahead of C/M and D/O and they come in first in this leg since we are completely lost and have no idea what's happening, I might as well think my team comes in first :angel:

I am sure the original idea is the correct one (damnit). So I think your Queens did good. And While out of three lead teams I would rather see Oswald & Danny get another win (I love those guys), I really do actively dislike Charla & Mirna (though last episode they weren't bad in behavior or attitude, so there is hope), so I would love to see Dustin & Kandice stomp them into the ground. Plus they are coming across so much more personalable this season (Not to locals which they always did well, but with the other players). Its also nice to see that they were aware of that from season ten. Just like its nice to see Eric realize that he came off like a dog in heat in season 9.

FF team usually skips all tasks except for their own one thing and then goes directly to the Pitstop. I don't remember a FF where the special task was the same as the other team's roadblock though.
U/J seemed awfully happy!
:reading: I am pages away from catching up and maybe somebody has already come up with what's going to happen in the pages I have yet to read, but...
??? Where does the hair & henna come in? It's just a thought but maybe this is the FF task?
I feel confident that Uchenna & Joyce would have no problem with this task, especially after Joyce had to lose all her hair in U/J's previous race. It seems to me that it would provide another cultural experience to what they where feeling that makes this African leg special & meaningful to them on top of Uchenna's family ancestry ties to the region.
It's an easy enough task to let them make and complete a FF to get them in before the others...

CBS is already has taken applications for TAR12, so even though it hasn't been announced officially...it seems to me that since CBS took the applications makes it official. A copy of the application can be Googled with "The Amazing Race 12 application".
:plane: For the cities they went to for the applications and interviews, it looks like they went to:
Los Angeles, New York City, Seattle, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Boston, Denver and Atlanta.
And then according to Wikipedia...
The TAR12 applications had a deadline of Jan. 16th, which is now passed the deadline.
The semi-finalist interviews were held last month in February and some are being finished up now in March.
The final casting will be done next month in April.
The filming is said to happen between June and August of this summer.
So...it looks like TAR12 will be on the Fall schedule.

My take on the Charla/Mirna "life or death in the game" risky move? I wonder if there was a FF that they went for but for whatever reason could not/would not do--leaving them to scramble back to mid-pack. There are certainly things that Charla would not be capable of doing (like the bike task in their last season) and somehow I don't see Mirna shaving her head--WHAT would she do with the hot rollers?? :lol3:
We are still missing screenshots of the henna/hair plaiting, and no one has swum with our generic "Philpper" dolphin yet either--both of which could turn up this week or next. If this week --it won't be a task--but next week? Anything goes!
NDIrish--that's a fairly generic schedule --BVM has said he wants to keep doing it and is just waiting for CBS to pick it up--so I'll bet they are waiting to see post Romber ratings before giving the final thumbs-up!

The people in Pemba are incredibly friendly. They are so unused to seeing foreigners that they are open and welcoming to all. In outlying areas children may burst out crying at the sight of the strange wasungu (white people), especially at the sight of long blonde hair. There has been speculation that the first and second teams to arrive at the pit stop have a huge lead on the others; perhaps as much as 24 hours. If this turns out to be the case, you can bet dollars for doughnuts that TPTB will arrange that all six remaining teams bunch up at leasts once or twice at the beginning of the next ep. No way will TPTB let one team get that far ahead of the others.
And if Phil had to come back from the original planned pit stop, when does he do his standup introducing the site? Also we should watch closely tonight to see how the instructions to proceed to the pitstop is handled? Remember how the detour which had scenes of Uchenna and Joyce starting the rock climb shown in the promo were cleverly edited out with a "voice over" comment that they would try the other task (can't recall exactly what it was but all teams did it and not the rock climb)

I do't know if the producers would deliberately change he schedule for teams to stop tehm.
But what wouldn't surprise me (since they do race the legs in advance) is that its possible the plan all the Hours of Operations points as being specific for only a certain day.
Ie just because say a shop, says its open at 8am to say 6pm. It may only be open on the day the expect the teams to arrive at that point.
Thus allowing for the teams to genearlly be on the same day (except for an occasionaly last team that screws up bad). no matter what.
So unless the first group of teams is just the ones on time and all other groups reallys crew up andd put themselves a day behind, then the producers wouldn't have to change anything.
Though wouldn't it be kind of awesome if say this group (U & J, Eric & Danielle, Joe & Bill and Teri & Ian) are nearly a day behind. And that somehow, Eric & Danielle manage by Izad's spoiled episode, to catch back up while the otherss slowly get eliminated and why Uchenna & Joyce are still so far behind in that episode.
People would be howling when they win. Howling in the streets.

I think the "logs" we see the BQ's trundling around are really probably rolled up straw mats that they use for drying cloves...it can be seen in one of puddins pics upstream and I had a great one that unfortunately I can't access from work but that's my guess anyway!
And how could I forget my sweetie-pie baby with the nasty big bottle--if he is an orphan somewhere and Madonna or Joli or U/J don't want him--I do! I do! :hearts:

I agree with this line of thinking. I do not believe that the producers manipulate anything except airplane flights and boardings(that flight to Singapore that would have given Colin and Christie a connection to Manila and unbeatable lead arrived just slightly too late; the momentous pull-back-in in San Juan). I think that whichever of Eric/Danielle, Charla/Mirna, Dustin/Kandice and Oswald/Danny does not get into the lead group by the end of this episode will have to move up later via Fast Forward.
There will be a reckoning in Kuala Lumpur, where the only remaining team not in my above group, Uchenna and Joyce, is expected to be 17 hours behind.
NOTE ADDED BY EDIT: Ha, ha, ha. My own words come back to haunt me. It's so obvious that the producers manipulate the "weather conditions" to prevent the dhows from sailing so that Charla/Mirna cannot get the larger lead that their risk-taking deserved.

This really doesn't sound like this episode. We have Phil there in all is glory at the Old Fort waiting to greet Schmirma and the others. When the first team arrives it is perhaps late afternoon - and he is still there the next morning when Bill and Joe finally arrive. Besides Zanzibar is not connected anywheres by a nine hour road trip.
May be interesting in the next leg, if the first teams C/M and the Chas leave before the last teams arrive.

Just finished watching.
What you saw was a producer-invented strategic delay to make sure that what happened in Thailand in AR1 did not happen in Tanzania in AR11. There was no really bad weather.
Agreed. I can't believe what I saw is what the producers wanted. The problems with a wide-open field:
- The risk of a "breakaway" lead team that no amount of editing can cover up
- It's a hassle for the crew (already mentioned by Phil)
- No drama for the viewers
- A ripple effect in future legs
Charter flights or pre-arranged seats would have helped this leg; whoever did the advance work missed a few things.

I'm not sure if this is the mystery pitstop or just the next destination, but I'll throw it in this thread. Producers give "special thanks" to the Moivaro Lodge (http://www.moivaro.com/moivaro_coffee_lodge.htm) in Arusha, which would maybe be 2 hrs. by plane.

It looks like none of the early teams used it since they were significantly ahead (save it for later), while none of the back teams used it since they assumed the others did and teh attempt would put them further back and possible out of the race.

Puddin, I think there had to be. THe first one with Joyce & Uchenna & Oswald & Danny sems like just a maybe. But this is all before the teams get out in front (maybe Charla & Mirna have left, but it looksl ike its still the night).
But later with Eric & Danielle & the Guidos, Its after the lead teams have left, and they even joke about how Charla & MIrna are probably 3 days ahead, and how they aren't going to go for it. Sounds a lot more definite.
And it makes a tremendous amount of sense.
Charla & Mirna wants that get to the location know they are ahead. Even at the docks they know they will be three hours ahead.
Uchenna & Joyce Oswald & Danny, Dustin & Kandice all know they are significantly ahead of the next group (much more then the 30 minutes they have to worry about).
So why do it. You waste it.
Erc & Danielle who are just a couple hours ahead of the last two teams it makes no sense for them, if they feel the early teams might have gone for it.
And with the back two teams, again. You can't give up the time, just on the off hand chance that not one of the 5 other teams took it.
Now I could be wrong (Ha, Never). But I bet I am right.

What date are we on in TAR time?
PUDDIN, the Charla/Mirna and Oswald/Danny and Uchenna/Joyce and Dustin/Kandice arrivals at the dock in Dar-es-Salaam were on Saturday Dec. 2. Their trips across to Zanzibar and finsh at the pitstop were all on Sunday Dec. 3.
Eric/Danielle arrived at the dock Sunday late afternoon and finished up 3 hours behind U/J adn D/K Sunday night.
Joe/Bill and Ian/Teri got across to Zanzibar late Sunday night, but hours of operation stopped them until Monday morning Dec. 4 at the museum. After that, they went through the rungu toss and to the pitstop fairly quickly.
I predict that there will be a mass bunching of the top 5 teams getting to the next site, which I still think has to be Africa and probably in the Nairobi area. The Guidos will be left behind because they are almost 24 hours behind C/M and O/D and about 20 hours behind U/J and D/K.
Apskip, how do you figure Eric & Dnaielle are only 3 hours back from D & K and U & J and I don't recall an hours of operation. Am i missing somethinI mean not having check the time to travel. But with a three hour difference between boats 1 and two and the 2cd boat departing at 8:30 am. I would assume that there is still a three hour difference between teh 3rd and 4th boat, but that isn't known. What is known is that they departed before Sunset, which should be 6 something p.m so Eric & Dee could ahve left around 5pm.
But thats a whole 8 and a half hours difference in time of departure.
I mean just from this, if no delays due to any variables that I am unaware of and if teams all took roughlyt he same time to travel and do taks. Then we should see that
Charla & Mirna & Oswald and Danny check in late afternoon that day (notice the long shadows on Phil. So I guess around 4:30pm
Then add a three hour and a half hour gap with U&J (due to penality) and doing all the same taks.
So I would guess a time of 8:00 pm
Dustin & Kandice probably around 15-30 minutes later.
And then Eric & Danielle at roughly at nearly 12 hours after Charla & Mirna & Oswald & Danny at say 3:30 (or maybe the mention 3am from Phil's interview (having to go back out a 3 am to check in a team.).
Then Guidos say 2 and a half or 3 hours after that. For a time after Sunrise say at around 6:30am to 7:00 am.
If I am even close to being correct it still leaves the first group a nearly unheard of lead of around 14-15 hours over the last team. Of course this could be the 17 hour mentioned or that could be a later leg.
SO comeon Chateau, apskip show me where I 've screwed up.

I think you got it about right. I think Charla & Mirna checked in roughly in the 3 to 5 pm range and Teri & Ian checked out in the 6:30 to 7:30 am range. I'll get better estimates later on.

With Slowhatch's lead it is pretty clear to me that Charla & Mirna triggered a "hold everything" reaction from production by being able to use the first dhow the day before. The leg was originally planned to end in Arusha using some charter flights that would leave after the rungu toss. I suspect the fish puzzle/log trucking detour was a planned contingency for just this situation. That and putting the pit stop in the old fort. Phil and production knew that they could have come back to Stone Town later than 3 AM and still met Charla & Mirna at the new pit stop. They would need to be there from about 12 noon onward to be sure just in case the boat transport went fast.
Maybe the dhows were just really slow on this day. How long is it supposed to take? It looks like it took some teams 6 hours (WAG). But anyway, production could see the dreaded 24 hour gap forming between first and last teams as soon as Charla & Mirna sweet talked their way onto the flight out of Jo-Burg.

I'm not sure if this is the mystery pitstop or just the next destination, but I'll throw it in this thread. Producers give "special thanks" to the Moivaro Lodge (http://www.moivaro.com/moivaro_coffee_lodge.htm) in Arusha, which would maybe be 2 hrs. by plane.
Good catch, SLOWHATCH. That appears to be Mt. Kilimanjaro in the background. If it's the next area of action, then we are headed for the Kenya/Tanzania border and probably will see teams fly into Nairobi unless there are charters arranged(that Big Bunch for the top 5 would fit that scenario really well).

Er, apskip... what museum? The Solve It detour was done in an inn, namely the Beyt al Chai. (http://www.stonetowninn.com/) Picture below shows the reception area, which looks like the place where the teams did the task. And since it's an inn, I think it would be open overnight.
And I guess this is further evidence that the pit stop from last leg wasn't supposed to be the one. I'm not sure if this has been said already, but here goes. The cluebox looking device (silver in color) that's usually beside Phil/greeter when they're waiting at the pit stop (I just used this one from Ep. 4 as a reference) can't be seen at all in the pit stop. I think they didn't have time to transport it to Zanzibar, even though the pit stop is still in Tanzania.

What date are we on in TAR time?
PUDDIN, the Charla/Mirna and Oswald/Danny and Uchenna/Joyce and Dustin/Kandice arrivals at the dock in Dar-es-Salaam were on Saturday Dec. 2. Their trips across to Zanzibar and finsh at the pitstop were all on Sunday Dec. 3.

Sorry, I think your time line is way out of line. Note that when Charla and Mirna leap upon the mat, the sun is down low shining right into Phil's eyes. Same is true for Oswald and Danny. Later on we have Uchenna and Joyce arriving after sunset (it is dark out now so no way can it be only 1345. At that hour the sun would be practically overhead and it would be bright, but it is dark) Same goes for The Beauty Queens. There is no way to judge the arrival of Eric and Dee. The final two arrivals the next morning after sunrise look like good possibilities.
Not to make snap judgments, but the time line has to be rethought. Perhaps the Dowl trip did take a lot longer than estimated.

CHATEAU, the sea portion is anyone's guess. However, the land portion isn't. I think you are wildly overestimating the time to travel by taxi a 15 mile trip to and a 15 miles trip from the rungu toss site. Why 1 hour and 1.2 hours? Why not 30 minutes for each?

Just for interest--one of the videos said that there was a religious exodus on, leading to all flights being full.
This could be the start of the hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca), which this year began Dec 28. For many pilgrims, this is a once in a lifetime trip, and I can believe that many would go far ahead of the actual start.
What I don't understand is why teams didn't look at other alternatives? Maybe a flight to Mombasa and local transport to Dar? Anything would have been better than sitting around an airport all day/night/day...

PEACH: nice try, but it did not result in superior results. There were no flights on Saturday that could get teams from Maputo to Mombasa. On Sunday, there was KQ440 connecting with KQ4616 in Nairobi, leaving Maputo at 1315 and arriving Mombasa at 2330. Since the last 2 teams arrived at the airport in DAR around 1830, they were way ahead by not attempting Mombasa, which is still about 6 hours away by land from DAR.

Since I say there is a Fast Forward... There is a Fast Forward. But looking at the bundles of the clue. We can clearly see the yellow one, teh red one, a blue one, and tehn we we see it waving, there is aother color below the blue one (in some it looks bluish, but in some shots it almost as a green tint to it.
My question is that part of the blue one or is it seperate.

On your last picture of Charla & Mirna.
We see on top a blue envelope (what the hell is that?
Then below it at a slightly different angle we have a darker color (where I assume Peach sees Green, i n which we can't see any wording or symbols (but if the Fast Forward, we wouldn't not enough of the card is visiable for either symbol or letter.
Then below that we see the yellow detour clue and then at the bottom of the stack we see the Red Roadblock clue.
So if not a Fast Forward what would that second envelope be?

If it were a FF, when would they do it? The tasks don't start until the reach Zanzibar Island, and they don't take much time to do. And if someone did it right away, and the original pit stop was in Arusha, then they would have been off and running before the decision was made to change the pit stop I would think. So I agree that there was no FF this leg.

Theres still something I'm not reading right about Phils interview
Phil arrives at the original Pitstop in the dead of night
Plans change, logistics..teams can't make it to the pitstop which is a 2 hour flight away or 9 hours driving?
Phil asks the crew if they could fly them back in the morning
Crew says no
So Phil & production fly back with the crew at night and get to the new pitstop at 3am?
then Phil & crew go out in the middle of the night for the pit stop, having not been to bed at all.
"There was no facility for any of us, like chairs or any of that. So at one point there was 12 of us, cameramen and production people, all tightly packed onto the mat, which was lying in a grassy area, being absolutely annihilated at 3:00 am by mosquitoes"

Hey you guys!!! I think this is exactly what happen this episode. The logistics Phil is talking about is the airport nightmare. Then they had to change everything including the Old Fort pit stop. I asume if the normal schedule of event keep going, it was going to be a nightmare for poor Phil and crew.

Did you notice in the Elimination Hotel or whatever that Ian and Teri were flown all the way from Zanzibar to Acapulco? So now we have all five eliminted teams enjoying the white sands and Margaritas in this paradise by the sea. I wonder if the next elims will be sent here or to somewhere in the Pacific?

While the dhows had a prominent sail, they were also powered by an outboard motor. The producers could have asked that some boats sail while others used power. If any of the boats actually sailed from point A to Point B, wind direction will play a huge role in the path of travel.

With the angle of the sun directly into the eyes of Phil when C/M arrive seem to indicate that it is later than 1400. Sunset in Zanzibar on Dec 5/6 was at 6:28PM so it looks like it should be later than 1400.

I wonder how the Elimination Station would be shown after Joe/Bill get sent to another Sequester place. Two minutes each for the two places, or give each Sequester spot four minutes worth of episodes? ???

I'll bet we Elimination Station won't even exist but thats just a guess.
The 10 days T/I spent in sequester may not help afterall because were not sure how long it took them to get there and I'm only guessing they departed for End City on the 15th along with the other teams per Guam spoilers.

And that they finished ont he fourth. Its very likely that Teri & Ian took a full nother day to get to sequesterville. That would put them probably arriving on the 6th. And they would have needed less flying time back home then those who went through Guam, so they probably left ont he 16th or 17th, I would think. But thats just an educated guess.

If they got to the resort on the 24th (which would be the earliest) then they were their at least until teh 16th. If they arrived on the 25th, then they were there until the 17th.

And that they finished ont he fourth. Its very likely that Teri & Ian took a full nother day to get to sequesterville. That would put them probably arriving on the 6th. And they would have needed less flying time back home then those who went through Guam, so they probably left ont he 16th or 17th, I would think. But thats just an educated guess.
Definitely leaving Acapulco and arriving SFO on the 16th. The producers would not risk flight problems by brining them in between midnight and 10am on the 17th.
