DH says it is a Blackhawk helicopter, but an export version. He says the military refer to this version as the S70. He's busy searching through the NATO sites to try and pin it down. He also says that it couldn't be any from Guam, although the color is correct for the Navy and/or AF.

Be back with more soon! Love being married to a guy with military knowledge!   :hearts:

I'm guessing it's a statue of soldiers (epaulets on the left shirt). As for the helo, could it be tied in to the rescue caps? There's a variant of the blackhawk called the seahawk.

These may be Tanzanian wood carvings--"Tree of Life"

Quote
Makonde carving is probably the best known art work produced in Tanzania. This art is produced by the Makonde people of southern Tanzania, and their material of choice is African blackwood, or mpingo. Their work is both traditional and contemporary, reflecting a tribal past as well as modern response to urban life. They utilize their tribal myths and stories as inspiration for the masterful work; one carver, for instance, specializes in ghost spirits and clouds. Animal statuettes, and human and demon-faced ceremonial masks are common.

Mpingo allows them to achieve the incredible detail typical of their work. The image* at the left (click it to see a 108KB GIF image) is called the "Tree of Life" which depicts the members of an extended family, including past and present generations, gently supporting each other, generation after generation, around the family ancestor. This motif speaks to a common human ancestral heritage–all that we have achieved collectively in our various civilizations has been literally built upon the backs of those who came before.

"Tree of Life" carvings can be as large as six feet tall, encompassing the work of one carver for at least nine months. They exhibit an intricacy of design and detail which would not be possible to achieve in a wood less dense and strong than mpingo. The most famous outlet for Makonde art is the Mwenge market in Dar-es-Salaam, where shop holders either buy a finished product, or buy semi-carved pieces or raw timber and pay carvers to work on-site. A large statue is often sold for an initial price in excess of $1000, but it can bring the purchaser three times that amount when resold in a more affluent country. The statues are found in art collections worldwide. A recent exhibit of African art at the University of Virginia Bayly Museum highlighted several pieces of Makonde work.

Zanzibar would be great, but I'd be perfectly happy to go back to Tanzania at all!

Henna hand painting is common in India, Pakistan, and Northern Africa....but I had mine done in Luxor! ;)

One of the 10 locations that I predicted could be the missing pit stop between MAPUTO and WARSAW is Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania. Since GEORGIAPEACH has presented the Tree-of-Life information and since I know that Dar-es-Salaam is a major seaport capable of having the type of fish scenes we see in screencaps, it is logical that Dar-es-Salaam could be the 6th pit stop. The presence of Masai and other warriors hours away in the bush also lends some credence. Fish scenes also fits ZANZIBAR, but the handicrafts and Masai proximity are not as good a fit for there.

I see an eating challenge happening if it is Dar-es-Salaam. Information on food there is:

Most establishments serve Tanzanian barbeque, including "Nyama Choma" (roasted meat) and "Mishkaki" (Shish Kabob) which are barbequed and served with salt and various hot peppers on the side. A number of restaurants specialize in traditional Indian or Zanzibari cuisine.

I find some additional information...If what I find is true, there should have been an art exhibition held there.
The chinese wording is the theme of that exhibition.
It started from 18/11/2006 to 17/12/2006. According to what I find, it is closed on Monday.
Based on the information, I think the teams arrived on 12/12

But you can in the one that I will get up after the West Coast show.

Or, as peach suggested, the chopper could be a MH-60S Knighthawk (http://www.sikorsky.com/details/1,,CLI1_DIV69_ETI848,00.html) used on Guam by the Helicopter Combat Support (HC) Squadron 5 (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/agency/navy/hc-5.htm) (now called Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO FIVE [HSC-25] ) .  They do a lot of "vertical lifting".

On another note, can anyone tell what language this is? The clip isn't recycled footage, and it doesn't fit into the languages we already have on the course (Spanish, Polish and Portuguese use the Roman/Cyrillic alphabet, and that most definitely isn't Chinese). I'm positive it's from the Mon-Khmer family, but which one?

Equestrian statue of King Jan III Sobieski, victor at Battle of Vienna (1683), trampling a vanquished Turk.

Łazienki Park. Warsaw, Poland

Dahg gahn it, the one pix I had a sure thing for and I get beat to it!  Lazienki Park is also the site of many other best known Warsaw attractions including the Chopin Monument, Palace on the Water, Myslewicki Palace and The White House.  Many tasks could be done in the area.

The Golden Boy is a recycle from Moscow and is a Close up of the statue of Peter the Great upon his ship which is located in the Moscow River nerar the Kremlin.

Can't spot any other European footage to clue other stops in Europe.  Most shots seem to be recycled scenes once again.

A trip to MACAU accomplishes one goal for Amazing Race production - it keeps the racers somewhat out of sight. I believe that all the U.S. Amazing Races are shown just like the TAR Asia was on AXN locally in Hong Kong, so people in MACAU would be less able to recognize the racers. Macau still shows its history until 1999 as a Portuguese colony and is much less "cutting edge" than Hong Kong. The principal industry in Macau is gambling, which does draw visitors from Hong Kong. I recall taking the hydofoil (slightly over one hour each way) from Kowloon to Macau and return.

I have a few of the same ones as BANZAI. I want to ask for some groupthink on these:

Boy with Water Buffalo - this looks like southeast Asia, such as Vietnam, or Philippines to me; what do you think?

Fish - the sign is either the name of the fish in local language or the unit of currency for the price; anyone recognize either one or the type of fish?

Waterfalls - this is most probably a national park near PUNTA ARENAS or near USHUAIA; my guess is Tierra del Fuego National Park; any other thoughts or agreement?

Rafting - this could be in Hawaii or Guam or other places; any ideas?

Not happy with this, but the rapids/falls on the Rio Petrohué in Chile looks similar to vidcap (particularly the mountain, which could be Volcano Osorno).   :-\

The rafting and waterfall screencaps have still got me concerned, but I have come up with a hypothesis that solves both together. It involves flying from Calama (airport for San Pedro de Atacama) via Santiago to PUERTO MONTT, Chile.  Just east of PUERTO MONTT airport is the Volcano Osorno and the waterfall that could be the one near there. 40 minutes in a very small plane from PUERTO MONTT is CHAITEN, which apparently cannot be reached overland, only by air and sea. Just south of CHAITEN is the RIO FUTALEUFU, which starts in Argentina, sneaks through a small gap in the Andes and ends up in the Pacific Ocean. It is one of the premier whitewater rafting rivers in Chile.

To quote: "Flowing through a colossal granite valley comparable to northern California's Yosemite, the aquamarine water of the Futa rages in a whitewater deluge, boasting some of the world's greatest rapids. Alfombra Magia, Mas o Menos, and Escala de Jacobo are just a few of the many spectacular rapids featured on the Futa." The season for Rio Futaleufu is listetd as December to March, which is consistent with AR11 visiting in late November when the volume might be a bit less fierce. For you Google Earth fans, put in for the Argentina/Chile border 43 degrees 30' 57.63" S and 72 degrees 40' 18.51" W . For the end of Rio Futafeulu, put in 43 degrees 38' 05.73" S and 72 degrees 54' 35.89" W. I had my eye at 14372 feet.

From there, teams would just hop the small plane back to PUERTO MONTT, which has lots of flights nonstop to PUNTA ARENAS.

Is there time for this? Only if it is treated as a prelude to PUNTA ARENAS and not a pit stop in itself. I do not see it as part of a double leg although that is a possibility.

Hi. New here but I've been lurking for quite some time now. I commend everyone for their keen eyes and ingeniousness.

Just to comment on those pictures above (courtesy of Banzai). The kid in picture #26 seems to be carrying a water bottle that has a weird design. Picture #32 does not have any of the hotels here on Guam, and the Hotel Road in Tumon is the only place here where there's lots of tall buildings. It is probably in Hawaii, as puddin noted. Or they could've visited another (equatorial) place with palm trees.

As with that helicopter speculated to have come from AAFB, I'm not sure about this because I haven't been inside the base.

At first I thought--how could a local Michigan charity's hat end up in Africa somewhere?

But--

One of "Yes We can!'s" associations is with JONAH (Joint religious network of action and hope)--and they in turn are affiliated with the GAMALIEL foundation---and they just sent a mission team to Kenya! (http://www.gamaliel.org/CBCO/KENYA/default.htm) in October. They also have a project in South Africa...

I have never been to Iguacu Falls, but I have always wanted to so I know what it looks like from many different angles. Those falls are nothing like Iguacu Falls. We are not about to see a repeat of AR2, Episode 2. Getting to the corner of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina is not so easy to do from Ecuador and neither is getting back to Punta Arenas from there. Time does not exist in this race to stop anywhere in that vicinity unless they were doing it episode 5 as a side trip between Buenos Aires airport and Sao Paulo airport, which I highly doubt.

Possible route of race (based on number of legs per continent theory):

Leg 5 (Argentina to Mozambique) = Non-elimination point
Leg 6 (Mozambique to Africa [probably Tanzania]) = 5th team eliminated
Leg 7 (Africa [probably Tanzania] to Africa [probably Kenya]) = 6th team eliminated
Leg 8 (Africa [probably Kenya] to Poland) = TBC
Leg 9 (Poland to Malaysia) = 7th team eliminated
Leg 10 (Malaysia to Macau) = Non-elimination point
Leg 11 (Macau to Hong Kong) = Non-elimination point
Leg 12 (Hong Kong to Guam) = 8th team eliminated
Leg 13 (Guam to Hawaii to San Francisco) = Final 3

Just what I thought. Although, if the "Marked for Elimination" penalty is still in effect, maybe there are no consecutive NELs. What if the TBC ends in a NEL in leg 9 and leg 10 is an elimination leg? That would suck so much though, considering that you waited for the continuation of a TBC leg the following week, and find out that no one has been philiminated.

Another possibility is if leg 7 is a NEL/TBC, leg 8 is an elimination leg, leg 9 is a NEL/TBC, and leg 10 is another elimination leg.  B:)

Boingo had already marked down the Petrohue "saltos" and the cap from last night confirmed it: it just wasn't the usual tourist photo viewpoint (from a helicopter maybe).

I don't think it means that. AR11 has to go at least 1 and probably 2 places in Africa besides Maputo. The most logical candidates are Dar-es-Salaam, Zanzibar and Nairobi. Remember the Masai and the fish for sale. Having the tree-of-life out of the way does not torpedo those locations.

What's you logic for 2 legs? Why more than one?

Also, it's still quite possible that those apartment buildings are in Honolulu and not Maputo. They are pretty generic and the distinguishing factor on location is the palm trees.

OK I'll keep looking but am pretty convinced that building is in Maputo City. Look at the greenery? Like Slowhatch I spent a few hours going up and down Hawaii looking for a match and nothing clicked..until I happened upon the Maputo skyline.
Also I think more than one leg in Maputo because from past experiences with the intro-flashs, more flash's of one place means the more we will be seeing it.

If indeed Maputo, Mozambique is leg 5 and maybe leg 6 this would make sense for a TBC or NEL which you know we are due for.

I think the probability of NEL on episode 5 is incredibly high. Otherwise, the producers would have episodes 6 to 11 to elimiinate just 2 teams to get down from 6 to 4. Episodes 5 through 11(7 episodes total) must contain the total of all four non-elimination or TBC legs unless Hawaii counts as a leg, in which case it's only 6 episodes total containing three non-elimination or TBC legs.

BOINGO, your link for the Dolphin Dhow provides information on Zanzibar dhows: "Zanzibar dhows have sloping bows". Presumably one would find a Zanzibar dhow sailing between Zanzibar and other ports, so the dhow availability is not confined to Mombasa and the Kenya coast.

Everybody wears red; it's their power color (tell the guy in the middle I want my beach towel back  ;D). This is a language distribution map (http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/~dlpayne/maasai/maalgmap.jpg); it would follow that it's a population map as well (but it wouldn't include "tourist" villages, and who's to say that producers didn't truck some people to a remote location). General info here (http://www.maasai-association.org/maasai.html).

Following up on PUDDIN's lead about StoneTown, I have this:

Stone Town

It may not have a particularly romantic name, but Stone Town is the old city and cultural heart of Zanzibar, little changed in the last 200 years. It is a place of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand Arab houses whose original owners vied with each other over the extravagance of their dwellings. This one-upmanship is particularly reflected in the brass-studded, carved, wooden doors - there are more than 500 different examples of this handiwork. You can spend many idle hours and days just wandering through the fascinating labyrinth of narrow streets and alleyways.

Stone Town was recently and deservedly declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. More information can be found at the UNESCO website.

Most of the houses that can be seen today were built in the 19th century when Zanzibar was one of the most important trading centres in the Indian Ocean region. The coraline rock of Zanzibar was a good building material, but it is also easily eroded.

The most visible element of Zanzibar's cultural heritage is represented in some of the outstanding architectural and historical landmarks of the Stone Town.

These include the Portuguese Fort (also known as "Old fort"), the House of Wonders (Beit-el-ajaib), the Palace Museum (formerly known as the Sultan's Palace), the Ithnaasheri Dispensary, Balnara Mosque, Bharmal building, the High Court, the Peace Memorial Museum, the Roman Catholic Cathedral and the Anglican Cathedral....quite a few isn't it!

The High Court, the Peace Memorial Museum, Bharmal Building and Stone Town's unique market, reflect British Colonial taste blended with Arabic architecture.

The intricately carved balconies of the Ithnaasheri dispensary reflect Colonial India's architecture while the Roman Catholic Cathedral reflects European Architecture.

The Anglican Cathedral has a combination of elements of Gothic and Islamic architecture.

This area would provide numerous opportunities for episode 5 tasks.

I didn't see any of them, puddin.

If the lost pitstop was anywhere near Mt. Kilimanjaro, than screencaps #12, 19, and 23 could not possibly have been in that vicinity.

I'm almost positive that I saw #23 when they arrived in Maputo last week.

Just browsing through some logos. You can look at this page (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Navy_aircraft_squadrons#Helicopter_Sea_Combat_Squadrons) to see if there's any resemblance. HSC-25 (AAFB Guam; logo attached) has a gallery here (http://www.andersen.af.mil/HSC25/photo.html). Some more resolution would be nice; most of their helos are numbered in the low 50s and 60s.

Caught a glimpse of Putrajaya right after a shot of E/D on the train; maybe it's something you see on the way into the city from the airport.

In the innertube video of "Charla and Mirna won't use the yield", I am pretty sure you can see the mosque out of the back window of the cab--I just don't know how to capture that!                                                 ch                '

From here (http://www.gofish.com/player.gfp?gfid=30-1099801), at 00:09, I think I saw the fish.

Hakushu8--quick eye!

But I really think that the fishies belong to our "lost leg" in Tanzania.
They are a type of bluefish found there, and yes, I spent way too much time looking at dead fish!

The one that really breaks my heart was my sweetie pie baby boy with the big bottle. I hate that we may never know where he was. If he was in an orphanage--I was ready to go get him!
