Sorry,I can´t tell you nothing about the film, becouse a signed a contract with them, in which nothing can be set, film or discrive about that event. But I can tell you that all was nice for me and my people. A super experience for all of us. This is not the firts time a film was done at my ranch, this is the 4 time that a USA company uses Yanahurco for a film. Also Paramount pictures have done 2 films.

GENERAL INFORMATION ON YANAHURCO
Location: Yanahurco is located 100 km from Quito, behind the Cotopaxi National Park to the southeastern side of the Cotopaxi Volcano. It is approximately 3 and half hours away from Quito in a 4x4 car drive.
Altitude: 3.550 to 4.200m above sea level or ranging from 11.000 ft. to 13.000 ft
Weather: During the summer, from October to May, days are sunny with clear blue skies, sporadic rainfalls, and moderate winds. Temperatures vary from 5ºC to 18ºC or from 41ºF to 64ºF. In winter, from June to September, it is rainy and cloudy with fast winds. Temperatures vary from 0 to 10ºC or from 32ºF to 50ºF.
Flora: A variety of trees, highland plants and typical flowers of the Ecuadorian Andes are found everywhere and abundantly around the waterfall many of which are considered living relics. Some areas within the hacienda have microclimates such as the Jatuncocha Lake located in the eastern section of the ranch.
Fauna: A grand variety of species of birds such as the Andean hummingbirds, falcons, and Andean condor, hawks and eagles are found here. It is the ideal place for ornithologists and bird watchers. Mammals like Andean wolves, lions, deer, spectacled black bears, tapir, wild goats, rabbits, wild horses and wild bulls called Cimarrones are found on the hacienda.
Museum: The ranch has a small interpretation center where you can admire samples of some of the most important wild animals and plants on the hacienda.
Fishing: Only sport fishing allowed.
Hunting: Forbidden.
Horses: More than 80 tamed highland horses.
Access: Restricted. Only for guests.
Transportation: Vehicles 4x 4 equipped with radio communications, not included in the rates. Please contact us or your travel agency for costs.
Accommodations: 12 double and triple cabins with full bath, fireplace or furnace, and the hacienda has 110 AC electric light.

And also confirmed (for Slowhatch :kuss:) that cigarette boats are allowed into their boat basin with "special permission" and that indeed, they were used!
And she was not entirely clear about the details but did believe that there were cars available for them as well!

Hmmmmm only 12 cabins at the Hacienda. 11 teams and Phil. Where do all the crews members, producers, TPTB, hanger oners, etc. stay? Seems like the only place could be back in Quito.

This campsite will provide the group (minimum 5 persons) with all the comfort and security they need for a pleasant, quiet, comfortable and unforgettable stay. Cotopaxi National Park - Ecuador
An hour and a half South of Quito, along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, lays the dominant image on the Ecuadorian national psyche: the perfectly conical Cotopaxi volcano (altitude 5897m), claiming to be the world's highest active volcano. Even novice climbers can summit the glacier-topped peak with the help of a good guide, glacier climbing equipment and a hardy jacket. The views from the top on a clear day are incredible. Even so, it's a physically demanding climb, (if not technically demanding depending on snowfall and current glacier conditions) so proper acclimatization, good fitness, and training is essential. A week in Quito or any other Andean town with ample walking and summiting of a lesser peak or two should be sufficient.
Walking from the parking lot to the Refugio (base camp) is a popular and (literally) breathtaking activity. It takes an hour or so, and you must dress for cold, windy and possibly snowy weather.
Mountain biking in Cotopaxi is a spectacular once-in-a-lifetime experience. Descend from the refugio parking lot cutting through the thin air at bone chilling speed. Most of the park is (ironically) very flat due to historical eruptions that caused the glacier to melt and form literally flat lake beds around the volcano. This is all good news, since riding uphill at this altitude, you´re likely to bust a lung - or two.
There are popular treks that go around the volcano and another, called Trek of the Condor, which starts near Papallacta, passes near Volcan Antisana and finishes at Cotopaxi.

they probably did drive themselves (out at least, in, I don't think so), there's only one road out, via a locked security gate, of the hacienda estate. it's a rough lava track and they'll have driven past the Yanahurco sign, it's pretty much like that for two hours and they'll go through Cotopaxi National Park to a town called Machachi then North up the Pan American Highway to Quito - if that's where they were flying from. It would be the nearest International Airport. I was riding along the road that day (it's complicated as we had two groups of tourists and I was escourting one group out whilst the others rode in, before coming back in via the road the following day) anyway, as we rode out there were 2 or 3 trucks driving steadily in convoy out. I don't know if they were contestants driving out or film crew. But yes, it's likely they'd drive out, and there's a check point to get out of the National Park before you get out to the town.
the ones taken up the hill are from a pretty little glass hut/viewing chalet, it's almost opposite volcanoes Cotopaxi and Quilindana - really great point to see the bulls and horses coming down the valley, and then into the corals.

GEORGIAPEACH, you were speculating about the length of a day in Quito on Nov. 21. I have the answer. Sunrise was at 556am and sunset at 604pm. It is a 12 hour 8 minute day due to being on the equator. First light would not be until after 5am. Twilight would not linger past 7pm. That means a maximum light of 14 hours. However, since when has no light stopped the Amazing Race?
I would guess it would be about 18 hours of light.

Have just checked back in my diary, and I think that most would have been filmed on the 21st Nov, as we saw a fair few nice new TV trucks leaving on the road out on the 22nd.
We brought the wild cattle in on the 23rd, but the hacienda do a horse round-up first. So maybe they were taking part in that? I honestly don't know. I'd ask my mates who are still out there, but there internet access - understandably considering the terrain - is a little infrequent.

Because if the rim is bent, there is nothing you can do with a new tire. Either they would need a new vehicle and there would be a time delay before the replacement vehicle arrives or if they are that close to the ranch they could walk.

On a freeze frame you can even match the same clouds.
When Derek and Drew jumped hours later, there was far less cloud cover.
What I don't understand is why the editors used that footage.
Sure Teri & Ian didn't jump in that first episode in Season three, but they could have used footage of John Vito & Jill (who were in blue). Its not like they didn't have enough footage. They jumped first and had a ton of footage of them both jumping, during the jump and arriving on the ground.

El Panecillo, thus named due to its peculiar shape and size resembling a bun, is one of Quito's major tourist attractions. Located within the downtown historic center, at the summit of El Panecillo there is a statue of the Virgin Mary built with over 7,000 pieces of aluminum. The statue is a modern replica of the Virgin of Quito made by Bernardo de Legarda in the 16th Century, it being the only one with wings and portrayed as if She were dancing.
One hundred meters from the statue and at an altitude of 3,100 meters, you will find Pim's Panecillo, which is undoubtedly an ideal place to enjoy a panoramic view of Quito while you sip a cup of coffee, a glass of wine, your favorite cocktail, or order from our extensive menu. On Saturdays and Sundays we also offer buffet service, and we are open from 12 noon to 12 midnight from Monday thru Saturday, and from 12 noon to 6:00 p.m. on Sundays and holidays.
THE STRUGGLE FOR INDEPENDENCE
The struggle for independence in the Quito Audiencia was part of a movement throughout Spanish America led by criollos (persons of pure Spanish descent born in the New World). The criollos resentment of the privileges enjoyed by the peninsulares was the fuel of revolution against colonial rule. The spark was Napoleon's invasion of Spain, after which he deposed King Ferdinand VII and, in July 1808, placed his brother Joseph Bonaparte on the Spanish throne.
Shortly afterward, Spanish citizens, unhappy at the usurpation of the throne by the French, began organizing local juntas loyal to Ferdinand. A group of Quito's leading citizens followed suit, and on August 10, 1809, they seized power from the local representatives of Joseph Bonaparte in the name of Ferdinand. Thus, this early revolt against colonial rule (one of the first in Spanish America) was, paradoxically, an expression of loyalty to the Spanish king.
It quickly became apparent that Quito's criollo rebels lacked the anticipated popular support for their cause. As loyalist troops approached Quito, therefore, they peacefully turned power back to the crown authorities. Despite assurances against reprisals, the returning Spanish authorities (Bonaparte's men) proved to be merciless with the rebels and, in the process of ferreting out participants in the Quito revolt, jailed and abused many innocent citizens. They actions, in turn, bred popular resentment among Quiteños, who, after several days of street fighting in August 1810, won an agreement to be governed by a junta to be dominated by criollos, although with the president of the Audiencia of Quito acting as its figurehead leader.
In spite of widespread opposition within the rest of the Quito Audiencia, the junta called for a congress in December 1811 in which it declared the entire area of the audiencia to be independent. Two months later, the junta approved a constitution for the state of Quito that provided for democratic governing institutions but also granted recognition to the authority of Ferdinand should he return to the Spanish throne. Shortly thereafter, the junta elected to launch a military offensive against the Spanish, but the poorly trained and badly equipped troops were no match for those of the viceroy of Peru, which finally crushed the Quiteño rebellion in December 1812.
The second chapter in Ecuador's struggle for emancipation from Spanish colonial rule began in Guayaquil, where independence was proclaimed in October 1820 by a local patriotic junta under the leadership of the poet José Joaquín Olmedo. By this time, the forces of independence had grown continental in scope and were organized into two principal armies, one under the Venezuelan Simón Bolívar Palacios in the north and the other under the Argentine José de San Martín in the south. Unlike the hapless Quito junta, the Guayaquil patriots were able to appeal to foreign allies, Argentina and Venezuela, each of whom soon responded by sending sizable contingents to Ecuador. Antonio José de Sucre Alcalá, the brilliant young lieutenant of Bolívar who arrived in Guayaquil in May 1821, was to become the key figure in the ensuing military struggle against the royalist forces.
After a number of initial successes, Sucre's army was defeated at Ambato in the central Sierra and he appealed for assistance from San Martín, whose army was by now in Peru. With the arrival from the south of 1,400 fresh soldiers under the command of Andrés de Santa Cruz Calahumana, the fortunes of the patriotic army were again reversed. A string of victories culminated in the decisive Battle of Pichincha, on the slopes of the volcano of that name on the western outskirts of Quito, on May 24, 1822. A few hours after the victory by the patriots, the last president of the Audiencia of Quito signed a formal capitulation of his forces before Marshal Sucre. Ecuador was at last free of Spanish rule.
Two months later Bolívar, the liberator of northern South America, entered Quito to a hero's welcome. Later that July, he met San Martín in Guayaquil and convinced the Argentine general, who wanted the port to return to Peruvian jurisdiction, and the local criollo elite in both major cities of the advantage of having the former Quito Audiencia join with the liberated lands to the north. As a result, Ecuador became the District of the South within the Confederation of Gran Colombia, which also included present-day Venezuela and Colombia and had Bogotá as its capital. This status was maintained for eight tumultuous years.
They were years in which warfare dominated the affairs of Ecuador. First, the country found itself on the front lines of Bolívar's war to liberate Peru from Spanish rule between 1822 and 1825; afterward, in 1828 and 1829, Ecuador was in the middle of an armed struggle between Peru and Gran Colombia over the location of their common border. After a campaign that included the near destruction of Guayaquil, the forces of Gran Colombia, under the leadership of Sucre and Venezuelan General Juan José Flores, proved victorious. The Treaty of 1829 fixed the border on the line that had divided the Quito audiencia and the Viceroyalty of Peru before independence.
The population of Ecuador was divided during these years among three segments: those favoring the status quo, those supporting union with Peru, and those advocating autonomous independence for the former audiencia. The latter group was to prevail following Venezuela's withdrawal from the confederation during an 1830 constitutional congress that had been called in Bogotá in a futile effort to combat growing separatist tendencies throughout Gran Colombia. In May of that year, a group of Quito notables met to dissolve the union with Gran Colombia, and in August, a constituent assembly drew up a constitution for the State of Ecuador, so named for its geographic proximity to the equator, and placed General Flores in charge of political and military affairs. He remained the dominant political figure during Ecuador's first fifteen years of independence.
AUGUST 10TH, 1809
Already in December, 1808, Count Ruiz de Castilla, President of the Audiencia of Quito, was informed of the existence of a conspiracy which hoped to liberate the Audiencia from Spanish rule. The conspirators struck in August, 1809. On the evening of August 9th, they met in the house of Manuela Cañizares, next to the cathedral, and after declaring themselves to form a properly constituted assembly, proceeded to organize a government known as the Sovereign Junta. The troops quartered in the city, not without reason, declared their support for the movement. The President of the Audiencia was informed that his period of office was over, as that of all the men that he had appointed. On August 16th, in open council, the inhabitants of Quito ratified what the conspirators had done, amid cheers and celebrations. The August declaration, which has gained for Quito the title "Light of America", was not a casual, purely emotional affair: it had a long history behind it, the teachings of Espejo, the ideas of men such as Juan de Dios Morales, passionate democrat, brought up on the ideas of Rousseau and the Encyclopaedists. And therefore, although attempts were made to belittle both the intentions and the results of the declaration, they were both of radical importance. As early as December ll th, 1811 the First Congress of Free Peoples of the Presidency of Quito declared absolute sovereignty, and promulgated a constitution on February 15th. Quito raised an army of three thousand men to defend the government, but these troops, inexperienced and poorly equipped, were defeated in the north and forced to surrender.
Count Ruiz de Castilla, back in power, promised to preserve the Junta, and not to take reprisals. But when the Royal Battalion came up to Quito from Lima - five hundred thugs under the command of Arredondo - as well as troops from Guayaquil and Cuenca, he dissolved the Junta and imprisoned the leaders of the uprising, to the number of sixty. Charges were brought against them, and forty-six of them faced leath penalty. They were to be tried by the Viceroy of Santa Fe. Ominous rumurs began to spread,and Quito feared for the lives of the prisoners. A brave group, made up mostly of young men, decided to attack the quarters of the Lima Royal Battalion and set the prisoners free.
On August 2nd, 1810, to the sound of the bells of the cathedral that suddenly began to chime, they attacked. But as they were striking off the chains of the prisonners, soldiers from Popayan. burst in through a hole in the wall and a bloody massacre took place Juan de Dios Morales, Juan Salinas, Javier Ascazubi, the presbyter Riofrio, Nicolas Aguilera, Antonio Peña, José Vinueza, Juan Larrea, Manuel Cajias, Mariano Villalobos, Anastasio Oiea, Vicente Melo, Manuel Quiroga and others were murdered in the most cowardly fashion, Quiroga being slain in the arms of his daughters who were visiting him at that moment. Then the soldiers rushed out into the streets and fell upon the people that they found there.

Sure Teri & Ian didn't jump in that first episode in Season three, but they could have used footage of John Vito & Jill (who were in blue). Its not like they didn't have enough footage. They jumped first and had a ton of footage of them both jumping, during the jump and arriving on the ground.

Actually, MSWOOD, you need a lesson in AR1. If you noticed, my note stated that it was DREW from AR1, not DREW from AR3. And it is DREW from AR1. For proof, I went back and reran my AR1 tapes on fastforward until I reached Episode 7, where the first DETOUR out of the pit stop at Sant'Agata Bolognese was a choice of GLIDE or BIKE. Kevin and Drew chose Glide and had to wait for Rob and Brennan to complete first. Kevin went into the tow plane and DREW was all alone in the glider, with shots matching the screenshots. This took place at the Aeroclub Volovolistico Ferrarese. You can look it up.
However, you are right that SLOWHATCH was correct in identifying the top screenshot in post #268 as from Italy, AR1, episode 7. My apologies to SLOWHATCH for an earlier version here in which I misunderstood that posting.

It's hard to tell from the BQ photo; they might be working with "tongs" or "nippers" (see here (http://fourwinds.net/accessor/jt7917.html); at the bottom of the page is also a picture of some farriers aprons which look a lot like chaps. I know that makes no sense because R/A chose the medal task, but I thought I'd throw it in anyway). Also, according to this article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horseshoe), they're probably domestic rather than wild horses; wild horses have better nutrition and their hooves need less care. (kinda makes me wish I'd made it to the end of the years-long waiting list for the horseshoeing class at my old alma mater; it was one of the most popular classes, even for non-ags :ride: ;D)

GEORGIAPEACH, I don't think there is any 12 hour wait as a result of a pit stop at the restaurant; that is at Yanahurco. What must happen is an hours-of-operation bunching combined with some mechanism like pulling numbers from a board to penalize the later team arrivals at the restaurant and give the first arrivals a head start.

The reason I put out my suspiciion that the BQs get their flight from Copa is because in the shot I can see that the Copa agent has processed tickets on the keyboard and passports to the right Of course I don't know for sure if these belong to the BQs. Well it could be, Danielle never showed she could navigate. But Eric navigated for Jeremy. And with a valid (non hand drawn map) we have no footage of them ever getting lost in season 9 (without a map yeap, and with 2 seperate hand drawn maps yes).
So I am curious if he will have Danielle drive.

they probably did drive themselves (out at least, in, I don't think so), there's only one road out, via a locked security gate, of the hacienda estate. it's a rough lava track and they'll have driven past the Yanahurco sign, it's pretty much like that for two hours and they'll go through Cotopaxi National Park to a town called Machachi then North up the Pan American Highway to Quito - if that's where they were flying from. It would be the nearest International Airport. I was riding along the road that day (it's complicated as we had two groups of tourists and I was escourting one group out whilst the others rode in, before coming back in via the road the following day) anyway, as we rode out there were 2 or 3 trucks driving steadily in convoy out. I don't know if they were contestants driving out or film crew. But yes, it's likely they'd drive out, and there's a check point to get out of the National Park before you get out to the town.
the ones taken up the hill are from a pretty little glass hut/viewing chalet, it's almost opposite volcanoes Cotopaxi and Quilindana - really great point to see the bulls and horses coming down the valley, and then into the corals.
I don't have the resolution to figure out where the gas station is. The sign looks like "something commercial de Pichincha" I hope that refers to the province; if it refers to the city or Gagua Pichincha volcano, then JVJ are way too far west. Another possibility is that they misheard or misspoke: there's a hacienda yanaurcu that takes a right turn into cotopaxi province instead of a left turn to cotopaxi volcano.and good call on the sign and the spec on hacienda yanaurcu, Slowhatch :)

I'll start the what we know and don't know:
High speed cigarette boats transport 11 teams to the Charles Deering Estate in Miami, Florida. They are released at about noon to begin their race around the world beginning with a clue to find this statue of the Virgin Mary located high atop a hill in the second highest capitol of the world. They drive themselves to Miami International Airport. Once at the airport, the teams jockey for positions on one of three flights. Meanwhile, Rob & Amber busy themselves by hiding critical reference material from the other teams.
Three flights will carry the 11 teams to Quito Euador. The first flight, on American Airlines, carrying John Vito & Jill, Rob & Amber, Charla & Mirna, Oswald & Danny, and Dustin & Kandice arrives at 7:50 pm. The second flight, also on American Airlines, carrying the Guidos, Teri & Ian, and Eric & Danielle, arrives at 9:05 pm. The last flight on Copa, carrying David & Mary, Kevin & Drew, and Uchenna & Joyce, arrives 40 minutes later at 9:45.
After they reach the Virgin Mary they find their first clue. The clue directs them to go to a nearby restaurant Pim's Panecillo. At the restaurant they find a Roadblock. In this Roadblock one team member must eat a local dish of grilled guinea pig with potatoes. When finished the teams may select one of three taxi departure times for the next morning: 7:30, 8:00, and 8:30 am. The last team to finish the pig is directed to find Phil. Teri & Ian are mercilessly eliminated sur le champs (on the spot).
After sunrise the remaining 10 teams receive their clues which direct them to select their transport from a row of taxis next to Pim’s. They must find a monument known as Mitad del Munde located 12 miles away. The ten teams make it to the monument in three packs. From there they get their next clue directing them select an SUV and drive themselves 50 miles to the Hacienda Yanahurco located on the eastern bank of Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. (Wikipedia says it is second highest but often mistakenly refered to as the highest.) So that’s good enough for TAR.

So, I tell them I'm a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald... striking. So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he's gonna stiff me. And I say, "Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know." And he says, "Oh, uh, there won't be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness." So I got that goin' for me, which is nice.

Feral horses wear their feet down fairly well. You won't see mustangs from roundups that have feet like those, nor as in appalling condition body-wise. For a horse to grow hooves like those seen last night, they aren't able to move around enough to do so. The one in particular that they showed having trouble walking was just horrendous and would have taken months of rehab to get healthy. Some of the horses they trimmed were younger, and the feet were not in as bad of shape. Hog-tying them and having someone with no knowledge of hoof anatomy just clipping away at them wasn't likely helping them much at all, possibly even harming them. I know they called them "wild", but something is up - the land they are kept on obviously cannot sustain them and their movement is somehow impeded so that they cannot move around enough to wear their hooves properly. I realize different cultures, different economics, different priorities, but, man - that was so difficult for me to watch. I had to turn away more than once.
As someone who has owned horses for 25 years and been involved in horse rescue for almost 10, the condition of the horses was absolutely appalling. Horses in that type of condition, if belonging to an individual, would be confiscated in this country. Not just their feet, they were horridly thin & malnourished as well as obviously infested with parasites. Their surroundings cannot sustain them nutritionally - everything I saw, except for the donkey (which has a much lower caloric need) body scored approximately a "2" on the Heineke scale - a scale from 1 (near death) to 10 (morbidly obese). A healthy horse will generally score about a 4.5-6. And cutting off their tails (no, they won't get stuck on rocks, etc.) was downright cruel as well. They need their tails to swish away flies and other blood sucking insects that like to make meals of horses. With no tail, they cannot protect themselves from them.
There are two aspects of AR11 episode 1 that have plagued recent races - begging and taxis hired to lead racers. Two of the CBS videos shed some light on this. In one, Rob and Amber tell a Chicago area couple in a bookstore in Miami airport that they have no money(can't be true; see what Charla and Mirna say below) and that they are in a race and cannot beg them for the money to buy this $35 book on Eduador that they need, but will the couple please buy it for them (which they do). We now that in Quito Rob and Amber pay a taxi to lead them to Cotopaxi National Park. We later learn that there is an entrance fee of $10 (not clear if per person or vehicle) to the park.
Charla and Mirna asked a local in Quito to guide them and when they saw how it was impacting him to do so (bus fare back, etc.) they gave him all their money. When they got to the park entrance they had none for the park entrance fee but a tourist bus was there at the same time so they begged for it.
Which is it? Did the producers change the rules to eliminate begging or not? If they did, where is the enforcement and penalties?
Either way, seeing the use of a taxi leading Rob and Amber to victory was totally pathetic. I only hope that a lack of money in leg 4 proves to be his undoing.
