Heee... puddin's man is a lady! "Known locally as Brezhnev's Daughter, this is the Motherland Monument...."
On a hunt for detour/roadblock locations-- this site (http://www.visitkievukraine.com/attractions/motherland.htm) is a WOW! with nice video shots.
Possibilities include (pure guesses at this point)
1) Something at the base of the Motherland Monument (see this nice video (http://www.visitkievukraine.com/attractions/motherland-video.htm) of a walk around/under the base
2) Caves Monastery:
"Rolling across acres of wooded slopes above the Dnipro, the Caves Monastery, also known as the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, deserves at least a half-day. It is the single most popular tourist site in the city, a highlight of visiting Ukraine and arguably the spiritual heart of the Ukrainian people.
Highlights include the striking early-12th-century Trinity Gate Church; the Refectory Church of SS Anthony & Theodosius, which sports the monastery's famous gold-striped dome; and the Nearer Caves, with dozens of niches containing glass-topped coffins holding mummified monks' bodies."(from Lonely Planet) But note on the video site that cameras are not allowed in the caves...
3) St Sophia Cathedral--that's the one with the 13 domes--"Built from 1017 to 1031 and named after Hagia Sofia Cathedral in Istanbul, the Byzantine plan and decoration of St Sophia's Cathedral announced the new religious and political authority of Kyiv. Prince Yaroslav himself is buried here. The most memorable aspect of a visit here is the cathedral's interior, where there are 11th-century mosaics and frescoes.

4) Carpathian National Natural Park

At 503 sq km (5414 sq ft), this is Ukraine's largest national park. Despite its status, industrial logging still takes place, and only about 25% of the park area is protected. Founded in 1980, the CNNP shelters wolves, brown bears, lynx, bison and deer. Hutsuls still live in the park, and the country's highest peak, Mt Hoverla (2061m/6761ft), is here as well.
5) Museum of Folk Architecture with seven different villages and working craftsmen (see video above, as well as the reader's video)

Rodina Mat means something like "Mother Russia".
It's made of titanium and it's 62m tall -
And it stands on a 40m plinth, on top a hill overlooking the Dnipro river.

The countries of the old soviet union were never that keen about putting their military installations on maps. I've scoured the nearby areas wih GE and put my guess for Desna on this map (source (http://www.tourkiev.com/maps/kiev.html); if you look above Chernobyl/Cornobil you'll see "evacuated").

Oh be nice. It is interesting (well besides so far, the Kuwait leg) that no team is a Ray and Yolanda a team that is always losing a tremendous amount of time navigating.
Take the models last week.
Getting to the bay, they were only about 15 minutes behind the other teams, and yet by the end of the episode were in 2cd place.
And this is the leg, where we first get to here Tyler tell James he needs to do a better job. Yet they weren't that far behind, ever.
SO I am curious if Ukaine wil be a major mistake (like Kuwait) or a minor one like Mauritius.

Go back to say season 5 for example (http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race5/insider/index.php) gator? There were a lot of solo confessionals :nods . I,m just saying the teams often have solo confessionals about their partners.

Yeah, this season alone we have already seen solo confessions at the Pit Stop by Peter and Sarh (before the elimination leg) and Rob and Kimberly (though I believe that was just on the Insider Clips for episode #2).

I checked the bickering clip just to be sure it wasn't a re-run--but no....It is Karlyn harping on the same theme, but different time so guess it is all new info.
But I'm beginning to think that Lyn must be a saint to have put up with Karlyn all this time! That shot of Karlyn rapping is the first smile I think I've ever seen on Miss Pickle Puss's face!

I've been looking at Kiev's nightclubs/discos/rap clubs...the disco Freedom is known for it's light shows but can't find a picture! And the Eurovision Song contest was at Palats Sportu in 2005...

Can anyone tell if the words on the hats are the same? Might be the name of the club. Looks like it starts "MAS..." which would mean it's in English. There's no "S" character in the Ukrainian alphapet.
ETA: No luck finding clubs beginning with MAS. Maybe Maximum (максимум)? (This is on the way from the airport to Independence Square), Magma (магма)? Maybe this is the name of the rappers? Maybe I'm just rambling? B:)

Based on shadows which appears later to everyone Tyler & James or which ever BQ taht is at the Pit Stop.
We see a lot of sidellight on teh boys and almost none of the women. But we don't see any overhead eitehr if it was earlier.

I don't know the flight schedules to the Ukraine from Finland but, maybe just maybe the Models & BQ's get some earlier flight together? We know they are the first to teams to finish the towers first at the virtual pitstop.
We don't know how far behind the other 3 teams are? ( or do we Chateau? ;D )
We see Rob with the Cho's at the airport and the Chos with the Bama's at the airport.
We know from the clues the models & BQ's race head to head ..we see them together in at least one shot at the Roadblock .
In the promo we hear Rob " I hate being behind the blondes ".
We can't see which teams are together at the LOUD/Rap club.
What I'm thinking is that the Models & BQ's hit the pitstop earlier than the other 3 teams and have a lot of time to kill per their long confessionals.

Pretty much laid out as it happens. Only missing connection is flight schedule from Helsinki to Keiv. Do all five teams make the same plane, or do Beauty Queens and Models beat the other three to the Ukraine?
From the rest of the task lay out, it sure looks like the BQs and Models get to the pit stop well before the others.
So if our prognosis is going to be correct, the Chos have to be eliminated next!
If it is either the 'Bamas or the lovey doveys, then the Paris sighting is down the toilet!!!

I certainly want them to (I hate it that they don't get credit for being first last leg, and so far only one team as ever been first both parts of a TBC leg and that was last seasons Eric and Jeremy. Still burned that it only counts as one win for them, so that they didn't tie Colin & Christie's 6 eg won (since of course they didn't have TBC legs, then).

There are about 18 flights listed for travel from Helsinki to Kiev. Most leave in the morning and connect through various airports. Finnair has the only non-stop direct flight between Helsinki and Kiev.

If they leave immediately on the next leg after receiving the "keep on racing" message after rappelling the Olympic Stadium tower, we might assume that they would be going directly to the airport. From what I have seeen I estimate that the first teams would be completing this task in early afternoon, so the first reasonable flight might be 4:15PM Lufthansa flight getting them to Kiev at 10:40PM. Or they might make the 6:25PM flight getting them to Kiev at 12:45AM.
If they don't make these flights, it would be bed down at the airport for one of the morning flights which also would mean that all five teams probably would end up on the same flight and arrive in Kiev at the same time. Probably around noon or early afternoon.

puddin--way back at the start of the episode 9 thread (in a crazy burst of newbie enthusiasm!) I did some airport work...I'll re-summarize here:
Basically, according to Lonely Planet (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/worldguide/destinations/europe/ukraine/transport), you have three choices for airports to fly into: Kiev metro (5 miles outside the city, Kiev Borispol (25 miles from the city), or interestingly, Odessa, which is only 7 miles from Kiev.
Checking both Amadeus and Airwise for Saturdays and June 17th--the first flights of the day seem to boil down to a couple of options:
1)--Kiev-Borispol: Dep 9:25 via Warsaw, Arr 1:35 (they show this flight leaving from the metro and borispol airports with the same flight # so could be "taxis to the wrong airport time"!
2)--Kiev-Odessa: Dep 8:25 via Vienna, Arr 2:00 (while this is a later arrival time, you are 18 miles closer to Kiev! Never mind the Odessa stuff--it is a LONG way away!

A couple of things though--do all of those flights go on a Sat.? I seemed to find limited flights on the weekends...
And I think they're actually doing the rapelling about 10-10:30 PM so probably are stuck with the AM flights..

It now sure looks like The Models and the Beauty Queens are going to lose whatever lead they have and we will see a typical BUNCH POINT at the Helsinki airport with all five teams getting the same flight to Kiev. Since sunset on June 16 is not until 10:50PM, there is still plently of daylight for other teams to complete the rapell down the Olympic tower.
Arriving in Kiev at 1:35PM, I think the scenario may look like this:
After arriving go to the Rodina Mat for the first directions.
Proceed to the Densa Military Base for the ROADBLOCK task (tank driving)
Proceed next back to Kiev and locate some location for DETOUR clue:
-- - COOL : Shevchenko Opera House, OR
HOT : Rap Session at Magma
Finally, proceed to pit stop at Far Caves Monastery.
Models and Beauty Queens arrive just as the sun is setting at 9:12PM
Chos end up last and are eliminated.

Can anyone tell if the words on the hats are the same? Might be the name of the club. Looks like it starts "MAS..." which would mean it's in English. There's no "S" character in the Ukrainian alphapet.
ETA: No luck finding clubs beginning with MAS. Maybe Maximum (максимум)? (This is on the way from the airport to Independence Square), Magma (магма)? Maybe this is the name of the rappers? Maybe I'm just rambling? B:)

Regarding the time for the arrival of the teams at the olympic stadium.....well for me I dont think the BQs were "really" 24 minutes behind the models and also both the front runner have an hour lead from the 3 teams behind. So for 9.08pm arrival for R/K and 6 pack cannot be true.....since the models arrived there at 8.30pm....
I may be totally wrong about it......

Its actually very likely . And unforunately these types of episodes don't usually give time stamps, so rally all we can judge is whats shown.
The BQ's were behind at the mines, the apparently got lost going to the statium and arrived when one person was repeling (we don't know if it was Tyler or James). But before most repels they do a safety check and explain and that can take awhile (one season is was between 15-20 minutes).
And as for the otehr teams we really don't know how far behind they are, I am sure that the BQ's are probably finished with tehir repel by the time they get there (or close to it). Notice how they don't say oh look someone's repelling.
So its quite possible that they have already left.

Do you think that the Cho's will be able to actually do the face-forward rappel? Aren't they both very afraid of heights? It is one thing to climb up a tower inside a cage like Erwin did, but it is another thing all together to have to tilt yourself over to rappel down face-forward! I've done a little rappelling and know I could go down backwards--but face first??!! I don't think I could make myself do it! Guess they manage somehow since we see them in tanks later on....

Yeah, I am sure Erwin and Godwin manage the tasks, it might take tehm a while, but we already see a long bunching point giving them plenty of team. Otherwise they have to take a penality. Since this isn't a raodblock which places a 4 hour penality, and its not a detour, I have no idea how big the penality would actually be. (if it coud even be the killer 24 hour penality that Nancy & Emily got in season 1).
In the double legs the producers have always placed a sizeable equlizer after the fake Pit Stop.
Even season 9 had one, but between teams taking much longer performing the roadblock and computer problems at the airport only 3 teams managed to get out that night. But since teh team that placed first in both sections, still most likely would have with teams getting all out together (since teams would ahve also been bunched again at the Mercedes track. E & J finished the section Mercedes track to Pit Stop faster tehn an of the other teams, though Fran & Barry would have taken place #2, instead of place #4.

It would be interesting if the Cho's were Philiminated before we expect. Or maybe the unextpected elimination will rear its head again soon. B:)

but but the Cho's are seen doing the Roadblocks & Detours? I can't imagine them being eliminated anywhere but the pitstop.

As for expecting the unexpected, unforuantely besides maybe some stunts or something, there isn't enough teams to really mess with eliminations. And this late in the game, I honestly can not see them offing a team mid episode.
Now I would like to see them change the format of the final leg and instead of placing some of the tasks at another destintation thousands of miles away. I would much rather see them get to the lower 48 at the start and then have a full amount of roadblocks, detours and stunts at routemarkers giving a real chance for the team who races the best leg to actually win.
For example last season, I like Tyler & BJ. So I wasn't unhappy they won (and they did run a fairly strong race except for 3 legs). But they didn't run the best overall leg, and thats what bothers me. I don't care for that, and with how they set up final legs, it makes it so much easier for a time to just do one event the best (as long as its the final one) and for them to win.
Now I understand why they do this. It makes the ending more exciting.
But really, this isn't a leg to win a trip or jet skis or 20,000. This is the most important leg, the one that should reward teh best racers, or at the very worst the team that runs the best final leg.

Interesting. VV is the code for Aerosvit, the Ukrainian airlines; but their map (http://www.aerosvit.ua/eng/map/#MAP) doesn't show any helsinki connections (maybe a codeshare). If we knew what day of the week they left, HEL airport has a nice timetable search (http://www.helsinki-vantaa.fi/timetablesearch).

Weird. Were they at the wrong ticket counter? Were they blocked from taking that flight? They should have at least tried standby.
Remember that they did not know to what city they we flying when they got to the airport. They knew they needed to go to the country where the Chernobyl accident occurred. Maybe if they had known they were going to Kiev, they would have read the board correctly?!

And that flight is going to drive me CRAZY! I've already searched airwise and amadeus with no joy. VV partners with SAS, Finnair, and AirBaltic but no luck there either. I can't find any late night flights to Kiev!
I know that there are inter-European flights which are ONLY available by pre-booked Internet tickets because I've tried to get on one of those myself--maybe it was something like that? That airport looked pretty shut down already at 9:45PM and I'll bet that ticket lady was already late leaving. (:;) It is a mystery--let's call into The Finish Line and ask the Cho's!

One of TAR's better episodes: full of action, stupid driving, and interesting to see how the various teams coped with language they couldn't even read. Smart move by the blondes to get a taxi to lead the way (did they ever pay the taxi for all the driving he did for them?) And I really feel for the Chos; even tho bama had done them wrong in the past, they still thought they had an alliance with them. Waited for them at the tank test and even led them back to Kiev. Stupid. Sorry to see them go and not the bamas.
Looks like the Paris sighting and the flight to New York is on the up and up. Which means the BQs are toast this week or next.

Just working on a few loose ends.
The music academy is in Independence square; there's a photo here (http://www.kievcityguide.net/independencesq.htm) as well as an annotated map of the square. This webpage (http://www.go2kiev.com/view/nightlife.html) lists the Dance & Groove as part of the Bessarabia market building (picture and description here (http://www.kievcityguide.net/buildings.htm#rinok)), at the opposite end of Kreschatyk (http://www.kievcityguide.net/streets.htm#kreschatik) street from Independence square. The rap artist does bear a resemblence to the lead vocalist of TNMK (http://www.myspace.com/tnmkongo), but I can't call it a match. Working with this street map (http://maps.atlasua.net/aquariusua/frm_uvod.asp), I've attached kmz files for the two stops. I can't quite read the sign for babushka's apartment building (see cap below), but working backward from Phil's description I'd say the apartment is two miles north of Independence square.
Also, I have a hunch--no proof--that there's a missing task somewhere between the Olympic tower and the tank field. The wording of the cluecard was a little odd, and the audio is edited so that no mention of a first task is heard (except from Phil).

Sounds accurate. They were shown at Independence square during the dispute, and the website (http://www.kievcityguide.net/streets.htm#kreschatik) I cited earlier mentions that Kreschatyk is closed for traffic every weekend. The driver (and their Fern) should have known that.
