QUEEN IDOL Eva Avila, 19, of Gatineau, Que., celebrates after she was announced as winner of the fourth Canadian Idol competition last night at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

After a star-filled evening of entertainment and many performances by the entire Top 10, Canada learned the identity of our newest Idol, Eva Avila from Gatineau, Que.

In what was the closest vote in Idol history, the 19-year-old beat out Craig Sharpe, 16, from Upper Island Cove, N.L., by a narrow 3.3 per cent margin, which calculates to a lead of 131,000 votes out of the nearly four million votes cast last Monday night.

The 90-minute show opened with the Top 10 reuniting on stage to sing a medley of songs including Freedom, Bennie And The Jets and Don’t You Forget About Me, with a large pack of backup singers and dancers.

Eva Avila, of Gatineau, Que., was named the big winner on the Season 4 finale of Canadian Idol last night at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Melissa O’Neil, the winner of last season’s Idol, performed her newest single Speechless, and Eva and Craig presented her with a multi-platinum award for her single Alive and a gold album for her self-titled debut album.

The excitement continued when Canadian superstar Nelly Furtado took the stage to perform her hit song Maneater, from her newest album, Loose.

She had actress Amanda Bynes and some of her cast mates from Hairspray, that is currently filming in Toronto, dancing in their seats.

Craig Sharpe, 16, of Upper Island Cove, N.L., performs during the Canadian Idol finale last night. Sharpe came in second place.

Both Craig and Eva were able to talk to their fans at home who were watching the results live from packed arenas in Upper Island Cove and Gatineau.

Craig talked to his aunt, via satellite, who introduced him to his newest nephew who he has yet to meet and Eva was thrilled to speak with her high school music teacher.

In a surprise performance, the African Children’s Choir shared the stage with the Top 10 and stole the show in their bright purple and yellow robes.

After individual performances by both Eva and Craig, the announcement was made and Eva, the newly crowned Idol, sang Meant To Fly, her first single released today.
