The Mongolian poster said they went to: Terelj (http://www.photoglobe.info/gb_mongolia/gberger_mongolia_20040713_1042.html)
Looks like a great background for a pit stop.
This may be the same train (http://ewenbell.com/photos.php?photo_id=884) thay took from China.
This indicates that they may have arrived at 1:30 pm. I don't understand why teams would have been required to drive to the China Mongolia boarder.
Unless that was th only way to catch the train. ;D
Post (http://forum.virtualtourist.com/discussion-195784-1-1-Travel-1-1750-Mongolia-discussion.html)
I just noticed that according to that train post, the travel time from Beijing is 29 hours. :o
But if they are riding only from Erlyan then, what?, 14 hours. Map below from here (http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/China/Erlyan/blog-46074.html).
The yellow arrows show cities served by Air China. If that's an option.
Wow! You go away for a few hours and you miss all the fun. Let me try to add something. Markers for the first stop:
- a cafe that serves latte
- popular among ex-pats
- Ethiopian owner
- next door to "monastery/museum"
This site (http://www.mogultravel.mn/mongolia.htm) describes Millie's Espresso as being "popular among expats." This site (http://talesmag.com/rprweb/the_rprs/pacific/mongolia.shtml) (towards the bottom of the page) mentions Millie, the Ethiopian-American owner. And this site (http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hubb/northern-asia/few-question-scottw-ulaan-baatar-20986) states that the restaurant is near the Chojin Lama museum (former monastery). So I'll go out on a limb and call Chojin Lama (haven't found a home page for it yet).
QuoteAlternatively, take local trains from Beijing to the Mongolian border, cross by bus, and continue to Ulaanbaatar on local trains.Another article (http://www.lonelyplanet.com/journeys/feature/ghengis_khan06.cfm) that suggests (last paragraph) that there's no straight-through train service.
The GE stuff is interesting. If you look at the northern suburbs you can see the difference between the ger-city and the Western/Soviet city. I tried using GE to find Terelj, but it's in the fuzzylands; generally, it's north of Nalayh and east of UB (http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/rgruys/ecoger/map.htm).
I agree with the others that the drive to the border (if the poster heard the account correctly) is a bit puzzling. Here's a newspaper story (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/travel/2002837704_mongoliatrain05.html?syndication=rss) of the 33-hour train trip: the border delay occurs when they switch the undercarriage. And here's a webshot (http://community.webshots.com/photo/365154010/1365867829071239172ryAEkd) of a ticket for train 23. And I checked the Miat 2006 schedule (http://www.miat.com/schedule.php?SCHEDULE_ID=21) for PEK-ULN: it's sparse, but there are flights available (none on Tuesday).
Don't think that there is an actual pit stop in China; but most first two-hour eps have various tasks and lots of traveling. So if we follow your schedule with teams leaving Seattle on May 28, then after they arrive in Beijing and clear customs at 11:30PM they may have to find cars/taxies and proceed to someplace between Beijing and Erlyan. Perhaps the Great Wall. But the teams have to bed down for the night to wait for opening "hours of operation" let's say 8:30AM. They do the task. Clue tells them to drive/take taxi to Erlyan and find train station and book train to Ulan Bator. Since train leaves at 10:30PM this gives them plenty of time to walk the wall and to do tasks, find clue and drive on to Erlyan.
Just some possibilities. So the first elimination is at the pit stop in or around Ulan Bator (Terelj).
By the way, just in case anyone really cares, the name of the desert is just Gobi. Gobi means desert in Mongolian, so it is redundant to say Gobi Desert.
Gingerman...they are giving "flaming arrows" to "mactors" and "beauty pageant contestants". I'd say that's a recipe for disaster.
reminder: AOL might upload the preview of this episode about an hour early before airing the first episode.
Don't think you can find water like that in Mongolia. It's Halong Bay, Vietnam!

I think that just about ices it - Vietnam comes after Mongolia. More and More it looks like sightings in New Zealand are not part of TAR10.
The pressure starts to take its toll on several of the racers as precious time is lost when teams are forced to switch tasks mid-stream, while others struggle to finish a flaming roadblock.
I think we covered the rules that the backpacks weren't allowed on the Eiffel tower ? I'd have to dig back in the main spoiler thread.
ETA: you can see one of Kar/Lyn gathering her backpack ..I think
Cool !! Do you have the video Banzai ? I recorded on my wintv and it looks like crap .
okay so who are the alliances?
Models and Team Miss USA?
cheerleaders and Tom and Terry
The Cho brothers and kellie and Jamies?

Still not much closer to the pit stop (I'll post it here because I'm assuming it's Leg 1). The hotel offers a 50mb virtual tour; I'll save everybody the trouble of downloading because the only useful images are from the parking lot. The building (whatever it is) seems to still be under construction when the VT was created and village buildings are halfway up the hill. In this later photo (http://bdsec.mse.mn/images/ZURAGA.jpg) that Puddin found you can see the finished building with bright colors and a roof that resembles a Mongolian hat (on the same site is another view of the parking lot--third cap--complete with dog).
Amendment: here's a blog photo (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5546/698/1600/Julie%20227.jpg), dated by the author at 27 May (she just missed the racers by a few days). You can see the sky through the roof supports, so maybe an open-air building was the intended design--a public panorama point for the Tuul valley, etc.
I pointed east and started giving directions. “Come out of here and turn right. Then turn left at the intersection and right at the light. Follow the road for a while until you get to a circle…” They looked confused.
...
We headed east on Peace Avenue.
RNO: Was there any team you really connected with?
Arti & Vipul: We really connected with the Cho brothers and the cheerleaders. The Cho brothers stopped and helped us at the detour. The cheerleaders were always spirited and fun.

That's Arti/Vipul interview. I think the cheerleaders are goners. ???
a larger picture of Lauren doing the Roadblock , if and only "if" she is last why are the dudes still hanging out ?

There's a fellow (lady?) who maintains a nifty graphical representation of each episode here
http://homepage.mac.com/yakc/tv/tar8.html
You can see each team's progress and assess their decision-making.
well I could do a short summary , not quite like Gmans but I'll give it a shot
- teams leave the Great Wall at Juyongguan pitstop area
- Drive from Beijing to the China-Mongolia border.
- arrived in UB that morning on a train from the Chinese border
- In UB the teams run up to a temple ,Gandan Monastery , grab an envelope, tore it open, ran to a waiting jeep, loaded up and drove away.
- the instructions said that they should get in their jeep and drive to Terelj
- The instructions continued, saying that they should park their jeep in the village of Terelj, where they would meet some horses and a nomad who would help them with the horses.
- we know from the clues above several teams broke down or got stuck in mud on the way to Terelj
- In Terelj , Detour - Either ride the horses or load jugs of water ? onto an ox driven buckboard and deliver them from one point to another ?
- we see several teams ( above posts ) trying these tasks . All teams accounted for at the Detour except Jamie/ Kellie Duke/Lauren.
- clues suggest the Roadblock is last and the only evidence of the Roadblock is " archer" shooting flaming arrows into the air assumes at a target ? per tv guide
- after the Roadblock is complete teams head the pitstop located above the Hotel Mongolia located in Gachuurt,Mongolia .
spoiler evidence , who could or should be eliminated one of :
Jamie/Kellie
Duke/Lauren
Tom/Terry
I'm leaning towards Jamie & Kellie to be eliminated but thats just a guess .
I found the location of the Pit Stop on Google Earth. With that I could estimate the teams’ checkin times:
Tyler & James 9:33 am
Duke & Lauren 9:48 am
Peter & Sarah 9:58 am
Dustin & Kandice 10:17 am
Rob & Kimberly 10:23 am
Kellie & Jamie 10:24 am
Erwin & Godwin 10:39 am
Tom & Terry 10:43 am
Lyn & Karlyn 10:50 am
David & Mary 11:20 am
Vipul & Arti 11:40 am
Just a little caveat here and that is I slammed the first half of times forward by about and hour thanks to the 9:15 that shows on Duke's watch. So, by pure shadow angles alone Tyler & James would be about 8:25 am.
Maybe you were thinking of the checkin times RJ
