Title: EP1 ~ "Real Fast! Quack, Quack!"
Post by: puddin on August 22, 2006, 12:46:38 PM
Lets compile The Seattle to Beijing ,China leg here  :jumpy:

CBS Press~
The race begins in Seattle, Wash. when Teams begin jockeying for available flights to the first destination, Beijing, China.  Once there, Teams are faced with their first Roadblock, which requires them to feast on a Chinese delicacy.  As the racers continue to navigate their way through the busy streets of Beijing, they are faced with the game's first twist.  Meanwhile, the racer's physical prowess is put to the test when they must climb a portion of the Great Wall of China.

Pedaler brings us this spoiler  (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php?topic=8610.0)
didn't quite make it :

Seattle airport earlier this week, and saw all of the teams at the Seattle Tacoma airport.
My pilot buddy didn't see exactly where the teams were going, but there were apparently only two International flights from gates the teams were congregating around: Hawaii and Tokyo.
"My pilot buddy who saw the teams at SeaTac said he was in the South Satellite.
He said there was an Aeroflot flight out of there around the same time as the NWA Int'l flights on either May 30 or 31."

TAR10 spotted at SEATAC May 27 - headed to Beijing
I rode on United's flight between Seattle and Tokyo with many of TAR10 teams Saturday May 27. The airport boarding area was 'buzzing' with couples dressed alike who were followed by camera crews. Each couple wore matching numbered tags on their backpacks and were dressed alike. The pair next to me (Team #1) pointed out the window at another plane, not yet departing, and kept asking the flight crew about our on-time departure and arrival status. They also inquired about Chinese currency exchange rates for their next destination in Beijing.
I recognize the two blonds in Blogger K The Kuwaiti's pictures but no sight of Team #1.

jennblevin@Twop's (http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?s=&showtopic=2666383&view=findpost&p=5506451)
I decided to actually take my lunch for once and spent fifteen minutes talking to an exceedingly helpful woman at the Seattle Film & Music office -- she'd even been at the starting line!

The starting line is: Kite Hill at Gas Works Park in Seattle! (So much for my guess of Snoqualmie Falls.) Here's an aerial map of the park (http://www.seattle.gov/parks/_images/maps/gasworks.jpg). Kite Hill is the roughly circular thing in the upper left-hand corner of the map.
What she said: Phil and the teams were at the top of Kite Hill; the luggage was roughly where the "trail" in "Burke Gilman Trail" is located on the map, and the cars (black Mercedes) were lined up in the parking lot close to where the red blip on the trail is. There were 13 cars and 12 (!) teams. They set it up with a fireboat shooting jets of water out on Lake Union (off to the left side of the linked map), and floatplanes taking off and landing.
There were about 75 crew people and 40 crew vehicles.
It was quite rainy, though on and off, while they were filming. She expected somebody to slip while running down Kite Hill to get to their luggage, and in fact some of the crew did, but no contestants did.
After leaving the park, the teams had to find their own way to Sea-Tac, though they blocked off a number of streets and funneled them up Northlake Way to Stone Way, and they might have asked at businesses how to get to the airport.

Post by: woden on August 23, 2006, 08:13:00 AM
Just a few early guesses from the TV guide pics in order of chronology:

1. VIPUL/ARTI
The TV Guide pic of Vipul/Arti makes me think they're opening their first clue to take them to Beijing. It's a Route Info envelope, they are still in their cold-weather clothes (which look like their starting clothes: http://www.cbs.com/primetime/amazing_race10/vipul_arti.shtml although she has changed her pants), and their hair is wet -- from the rain or coming in on the boats.

2. BILAL/SA'EED
Like Chateau and the caption state, they're at SeaTac getting tickets

3. PETER/SARAH
Maybe their first clue takes them to the Forbidden City? Sarah has just gotten an envelope and is tearing it open. Wondering why a) the guard is giving them directions even though they haven't opened the envelope yet & don't know what they're doing next and b) what that red card is in the guard's hand. Maybe they had to give it to the guard to get their next clue?

4. GREAT WALL
A roadblock at the Great Wall -- looks to me like Godwin, Tom, and Mary choose to do the wall. The teams have also changed clothes by now, obviously, from the start of the race so this is day 2 of the leg -- day 1 is almost entirely consumed with the flight.

While I can't say exactly where the Forbidden City photo of Peter/Sarah was taken, it probably helps that we can eliminate one of the four gates that lead into the palace (there's one for each cardinal point).

The East Opulent Gate (东华门) is slightly different from the rest, as due to superstition and geomancy and stuff, only eight columns of doornails were installed on each side. Now if Peter and Sarah (the usual nine columns on their door) aren't at the East Gate, and their shadows point straight into the Forbidden City, it means that the photo wasn't taken in the morning. Consequently, we can deduce that there isn't Hours of Operation bunching at the Forbidden City, and depending on the arrival times of their flights, we would know about how far into the leg the location is.

Instinct tells me that it's the South Gate (Meridian Gate), since Beijing is after all high in the Northern Hemisphere. However, the total lack of other tourists confuses me quite a bit. Any ideas?

Since the Great Wall is indeed on the way to Mongolia (and they drive there), could this be one long leg instead of two separate ones? And there typically (well, actually, always) isn't a Roadblock on the first leg, what could this mean for the scaling of the wall?

Also, I have something for Vipul and Arti in that photo... They look good...

Found some "gate" photos on the web:

Forbidden City South Gate (http://www.owlsoup.com/3LBE/3LBE3/3LBE3art3.html)

Forbidden City gate (unidentified) (http://www.allposters.com/-sp/Detail-of-Forbidden-City-gate-Beijing-China-Posters_i1240778_.htm)

Forbidden City Interactive Map (http://www.thebeijingguide.com/forbidden_city/index.html)

Edited to add: FWIW, Team Handicap appears to be leaving the FC, as the picture of an unidentified gate below shows the gate opens inward, so they must have finished their task (or went to the wrong gate).

Being above the Tropic of Cancer, shadows in Beijing should point northwards no matter the time of the day or year. If they are leaving the Forbidden City, would that mean that they are at one of the gates running down the axis of the compound? Assuming so, we can eliminate the West Gate (Xihua Men, 西华门) along with the East Gate (Donghua Men, 东华门) which we eliminated earlier because of the number of studs on the door.

Gates at the Forbidden City are (running down the central axis):

Gate of Divine Prowess (North Gate, Shenwumen, 神武门, originally Xuanwumen, 玄武门)
http://www.galen-frysinger.ws/china/forbiddencity55.jpg
The tile pattern is correct, but the gate colour may not match perfectly, depending on the light when the photo was taken.

Gate of Obedience and Purity (Shunzhenmen)

Gate of Heavenly Purity (Ganqingmen, 乾清门)

Gate of Supreme Harmony (Taihemen, 太和门)

Meridian Gate (Wu Men, 午门)

Upright Gate (Duan Men, 端门)
http://www.drben.net/ChinaReport/Beijing/Landmarks-Hotspots/DongCheng/Gugong-Palace_Museum/Forbidden_City_Beijing2b.html
The tiles here are laid slightly different, running diagonally on the sides of the gates rather than horizontally.

Gate of Heavenly Peace (Tiananmen, 天安门)
http://www.sinc.sunysb.edu/Stu/jmacdona/Images/Tianamen%20Square%20from%20arching%20door%20II.jpg
There's a plastic thing on the door from the row of studs just below the handle downwards, so this is probably not it.

Geez, you would think finding pictures of something as famous as the Forbidden City would be easier...

  Neobie.  Must have looked at over a hundred pictures of doors at the Forbidden City.   ;D   Not sure about the North Gate, as the shadows are all wrong (as you said, they should be pointing north).  I suspect it's an internal doorway.  One thing going for us is the stone (flush) threshhold.  We can eliminate all doors with a raised (wooden) threshhold.   (:;)  I'm also starting to think that Beijing is only a clue stop, on the way to Mongolia in the first episode.  We'll have to wait and see.   :snicker:

Edited to add: If you think picture of Forbidden City are scarce, try googling for "costumed guards".   :-\  I suspect he was hired by TPTB to add some atmosphere to the China leg.   :js:

LOL you're right he is! Agree that he's not a regular fixture. The costumed people in the Forbidden City are usually of the Qing Dynasty: http://www.thebeijingguide.com/forbidden_city/soldier.jpg

Found this guy from the Tang Dynasty: http://www.unitedempireminiatures.com/ProdImages/th_sara1.jpg but they had very little to do with the Forbidden City anyway; they were based in Xian. If anyone is looking, the dynasties that occupied the Forbidden City are the Yuan (Mongol), Ming and Qing dynasties.

Our guy here looks like he's in Yuan (Mongol) costume. Did TPTB mess up, or is this a clue sending them to... Mongolia? (Force the teams to make the connection themselves, that would be cool!)
Title: Re: EP1 / Leg 1 ( title to come )
Post by: Boingo on August 23, 2006, 11:55:59 PM
Funny you should say he is dressed like a Mongol.   At first I thought (based on the costume) that this may be at some temple/fortress in Mongolia (since that is a known pitstop).  But no, couldn't be, given TPTB said they go to Beijing.  Looks like the Great Wall kept the Mongols out for centuries, but Van Munster was able to smuggle one into the Forbidden City anyway.   :lol3:  Maybe they are just trying to confuse us spoilers.   (:;)   :knuckles:   :meow:

Maybe it's supposed to look like Genghis Khan....or Ricardo Montalban (Wrath of Khan)   :groan:

Only thing is, Sarah hasn't yet opened what appears to be a clue envelope yet, so why is the Khan "look-a-like" pointing?  Assuming they have just finished a task (or just arrived at a task), then shouldn't they read the clue before they ask for directions?   ???    :-\

Edited to add:  Wow, Neobie knows his dynasty!  If it's the Yuan Dynasty (http://ubpost.mongolnews.mn/virtualmongolia/kara_korum/divine_wind.htm), then this battle armor kinda matches.   ;)

Sigh... Thought my Chinese could help me with the Forbidden City Guard, but so far all I've got is this...

http://www.coolcard.com.tw/CardInfo.asp?cardid=90609

In other news, kill me now. I found forty-two gates within the Forbidden City, with the possibility of more! However, this door, unlike most, doesn't open flat against the inner wall, instead being movable outwards up to 180°. Now we just need to eliminate those one by one...

Edited to add: How about the Mongol (hey I'm not 100% sure on this) pointing north... into Mongolia?

Just noticed something about the racers climbing the Great Wall.  Looks like they are using rope ladders in a mountainous section of the wall.  Did some googling, and found this snippet:

"A Ming dynasty beacon tower on the Great Wall in a mountainous area. The door on top could only be reached by scaling a rope ladder. ..."

The link was broken, so don't know exactly if this relates to what we see in the photo.  May help narrow down the location.

This shot was taken between 6:38 and 7:09 am (assumes May 29th, 2006).

I re-calculated this after remembering that it would be the 29th, not the 28th due to the date line.  That did not make a big change.  I looked at the door again an reassessed its angle with respect to the wall (looks less than 45 now that I stare at it).  I'm getting a solar altitude between 18 and 24 deg.  Check out the location Peter's calf muslcle's shadow!  It's a low sun.  At first that left open whether it was am or pm.  But Neobies comment about the number of doornails nails this down as being just inside the West door of the Forbidden City.

Found a picture of the West Opulent Gate (西华门) from the outside:

Is the colour of the studs correct? And does the stone step at the door mean anything? If this doesn't work out, we still have plenty of East/West doors within the Forbidden City to look at... :groan:

:jumpy:  Thanks for the pbase link, puddin.  After looking at hundreds of Forbidden City pix, I think I found a possible candidate for "our" door.  It's taken from an opposite view, looking out, but the floor tiles are a good match, the hinge looks about right, and if you look closely, you can see that the inner red walls are covered with smaller "knobs", just like the ones above Peter's head (highlighted with a yellow circle).  If it isn't the one, it's very close.

If we can identify the building in the background, we may get closer to identifying this structure.

:jumpy:  OK, after checking the 360 degree map of the Forbidden city (http://www.thebeijingguide.com/forbidden_city/forbidden_city_virtual_tour.html), this structure appears to be a twin of the one opposite.  According to the map below, I place the racers near the square in front of Meridian Gate, entering through a doorway on the left side (note red circle).  Thats why the guard is pointing (north) toward the main entrance at the Meridian Gate, IMHO.

Nice job Boingo!  :woohoo:

I think the photo you put up was taken at the location you circled on the map.  It's from the outside looking in.  It was taken at the end of the day when the sun was low and having a northerly azimuth.  That is why there is a shadow of the western leg (one of two legs of that "U" shaped building having the main enterance in the middel) cast all the way over to the eastern version of the photographed gate structure.

So I'm thinking that our promo shot was eiter taken over on the other side (the Eastern side) in the morning or at the location you circled in the evening.  I'll have to put up the shadow times for the evening later.

So my question is:  Do you think that the gate on the East would have 8 or 9 columns of doornails?

My inclination is toward an early morning shot at an hours of operation bunch point.  But the nail count will be the deciding factor.

Not sure I totally understood all of that, Chateau, but according to the map, the Forbidden City is aligned on a true North-South axis.  The doorway with the racers is on the west side of the square in front of the Meridian Gate.  Just looking at the shadows in the promo shot (showing shadows running almost directly north), IMHO I'd say it's "high noon".  But I'm no expert.  I counted the door knobby thingies and the number matches the promo shot.  Am I missing something?

Here's a twist.  According to Orbitz, if the racers fly east to Beijing, then they would arrive at 9:30AM.  Kinda flies in the face of the race going east to west this time.   :umn:  Naaaah, can't be.   :groan:  That's the only way they would be at FC about noon time after arriving.      This is assuming FC is first stop after they get to Beijing.    ???
Title: Re: EP1 / Leg 1 ( title to come )
Post by: Chateau d If on August 25, 2006, 04:08:39 PM
Sorry about that.  Kind of hard to follow, I know.

Here is what I mean:  The doorway in your photo is in the north/south direction and when we look through the doorway we seen the equivalent one on the East side of the square.  I circled the one we see through the door in the capture from the 360 viewer.

I put my estimate of the direction of sunshine for your photo on the palace map.  In the promo photo the sunshine direction is straight through the doorway and so that means it is shining in an east/west direction.

Post by: Boingo on August 25, 2006, 04:26:13 PM
OK, I think we're talking about the same doorway (on the west side of the square).  So now the question remains, what time is it in the promo pix, given we assume the racers are at that very same door.  I guessed high noon, based on the shadows.  I suppose you disagree based on your timeline.  Did you assume that FC is first stop upon arriving in Beijing?  Might it rather be the pitstop for that leg?  I noticed that Peter is not wearing the same clothes shown in the Seattle starting line group picture.
Title: Re: EP1 / Leg 1 ( title to come )
Post by: Chateau d If on August 25, 2006, 05:58:13 PM
It looks like the promo shadow points straight through the doorway.  So that means it is pointing west (or east) not north.

I think this is the morning after they arrive in Beijing.  That could give them a chance to change clothes.

At noon the sun is up high with a solar altitude of 71 deg.  The promo shot has a very low solar altitude making those long shadows.  It looks like the place in the shadow where Peter's knee is falls on the guard's foot.

NO!.......  The shadows run parallel to the doorway.  The doors open to the west. (Suggest you check the larger promo pix previously posted in this thread.  You may have cropped this pix, and lost all perspective.)  If the promo door is the same as the pbase door then they both face east/west.   This door is on the west side of the square.  The shadows clearly point NORTH.  How can the same door be both facing east/west and north/south?  lol.  :wall:

The shadows look like they are perpendicular to the doorway to me!

You can see that they are almost parallel to the lines in the paving stones.

Just to get my perspective back  I made a drawing to clarify what direction the doorway is.  It includes lines that define the view that is seen by the camera.

Nope, sorry to say, wrong.  You've got the doors opening toward the square, where they clearly open away from the square westward.  Looks like we completely disagree, so there's just no convincing you.  LOL.  I'm not giving in on this, so we'll just have to wait till Sept. 17th, or until someone else is brave enough to chime in and take us on.  lol.  It's as clear as day to me, sorry you just can't see my point.  lol.    :(  OK, on to other things.

The doors on that gate open to the east.  You're right, they do not open into the square.

Only thing is, Sarah hasn't yet opened what appears to be a clue envelope yet, so why is the Khan "look-a-like" pointing?  Assuming they have just finished a task (or just arrived at a task), then shouldn't they read the clue before they ask for directions?   ???

Maybe, Peter is just asking where the nearest bathroom is!  :jumpy:

Just playing around with the idea, but why would the sun be shining from the North?

Alright, you guys !  You are driving me  :groan:

The reason the sun can shine from the North is that in the summer it rises with a northernly component in the east.

In Beijing, on May 29th sunrise was at 4:49 am, sunset at 7:34 pm

BTW, those lines were accurately placed with my protractor.   ;)

From the SEMA plot you can see that at 4:00 pm the solar altitude was more than 38 deg.  Way too high for our promo shot.  That's why I'm opting for the AM side at around 7:00 am.

Up to you puddin, but maybe we should make this thread a "sticky" first, so it doesn't fall too far down the list before the premier.  My work here is done....now off to find that section of the Great Wall.... :groan:   but wait, that's still in Leg 1.....

Still not much closer to the pit stop (I'll post it here because I'm assuming it's Leg 1). The hotel offers a 50mb virtual tour; I'll save everybody the trouble of downloading because the only useful images are from the parking lot. The building (whatever it is) seems to still be under construction when the VT was created and village buildings are halfway up the hill. In this later photo (http://bdsec.mse.mn/images/ZURAGA.jpg) that Puddin found you can see the finished building with bright colors and a roof that resembles a Mongolian hat (on the same site is another view of the parking lot--third cap--complete with dog).

Amendment: here's a blog photo (http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/5546/698/1600/Julie%20227.jpg), dated by the author at 27 May (she just missed the racers by a few days). You can see the sky through the roof supports, so maybe an open-air building was the intended design--a public panorama point for the Tuul valley, etc.

 Thanks for the video. Most of it is pretty easy: SC stadium, a R.I. beach, etc. The mosque took a little digging but based on the pillars and the blue/white scheme it would seem to be the side entrance to the Islamic Center of Cleveland (http://www.iccleveland.org/main/index.aspx) (picture source (http://family.webshots.com/photo/749479/1007606356000749455CADrZsZksa)). The leader, Fawaz Damra, is in a spot of trouble, but that's for another thread.

Nope.  It started out looking like a short version of the same old "meet the teams" stuff, but then I caught the Lion Dance at the very end.   Don't worry, we have two more weeks to go.  Hope we get the preview early, so we can spoil the heck out of the China leg, like we did last season for the Sao Paulo leg.   That was fun. :snicker:

Cool, puddin.  How hard could it be to find a section of the Great Wall....ummm....how long is this wall  ??? ...ummm  :groan:

Well at least the (what appears to be) round watch/guard tower should narrow it down a bit.   :snicker:

 Just thinking out loud here....the nearest part of the Great Wall to Beijing is in Badaling, according to this blurb on the web:

The Badaling section of the Great Wall is 42 miles / 70 kilometres northwest of Beijing. Once you get outside the city and onto the expressway, the trip to Badaling is quick.

But that still leaves a lot left to do in the first leg....hmmmm.... my brain hurts.... :knock:

Have been doing a bit of research on the round watchtowers along the Great Wall, it seems like the Jinshanling section (Gubeikou to Simatai) has more of those that are irregularly-shaped (not square). Parts of it are crumbling to pieces though, so I'm not sure if it matches the vidcaps (the mountains and greenery seem close enough to me). But guess what? That section has the favourite Episode One staple of a zipline...

There was another team that started the commercial off.  I think it may have been Tom & Terry not sure though.  I had just got my children off to school.  It showed their children with them-Lyn & Karlyn's.   Also, my sister,Mary, said that she had seen James & Tyler's commercial and when one of the guys mentioned "the pretty girls" it cut to Jamie & Kelly and then back to Tyler & James.

I believe it is a mere 1,500 miles long.  And it all looks pretty much the same.  But the spot climbed is probably that which is nearest Beijing and visited by hordes of tourists.

"The Amazing Race" Moves to a New Night and Time this Fall, Sundays at 8:00 PM

"Real Fast! Quack, Quack!" -- The four-time Emmy Award-winning reality adventure series returns for its 10th season this fall, when Teams will travel over 40,000 miles in under 30 days, spanning four continents and 13 countries. Teams will travel to such exotic locations as Kuwait, Mongolia, Beijing, Madagascar and Hanoi, Vietnam.

The 12 Teams, including the first Indian-American team, a coal miner and his wife, reigning beauty queens, an amputee and a high school teacher, will compete against one another in a race around the world for a $1 million prize.  THE AMAZING RACE 10 will begin with a special 90-minute premiere, Sunday, Sept. 17 (8:30-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.  Starting Sunday, September 24, THE AMAZING RACE will move to its new home, Sundays (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT).  Phil Keoghan is host of the series.

Real Fast Quack, Quack----also thought of it as an eating task. I considered the task as a Detour since I thought that there were no Roadblocks on thew first leg, but since it was mentioned, I'm going back to my original theory.

Found it !!

New Twists and Turns
Hmm. Heard it through reliable source that there will be additional twists this year. Besides NEL, Road BLocks and Detours, there will be more fun fun fun! And can you believe a couple from Kentucky finally made it. Guess with all the publicity from the coal mines, the producers finally decided they needed some REAL people on the show, besides the MOdels and such. Great to have diversified groups this year.

Do we have any South Asian destination on our itinerary? Coz that's definitely what it looks like to me with the man and the ox. Seriously doubt that it was recycled from the Philippines. India in TAR4 maybe.

Is that... an ostrich?

Don't mind me asking this, but what's the chance of the Great Wall climbing task becoming a Roadblock? My head's telling me it's pretty much slim to none, but I'd like a second or third opinion...

2 Roadblocks in one ep ? Naw .. I'll guess the twist is alternating roadblocks  , you know take turns .

Wow, there has really been very little info on this first ep compared to last season. Just a quick summary that I think represents everything from the thread...

Teams START at Kite Hill in Gasworks Park, Seattle
Teams PROCEED to Beijing, China {connecting in Tokyo?}
Teams find clue at Meridian Gate in Forbidden City {after waiting for hours of operation?}
ROADBLOCK: Teams eat Chinese delicacy – duck tongue? balut eggs?
Teams “navigate streets of Beijing – faced with first twist” – teams must alternate roadblocks?
ROADBLOCK/ DETOUR(?): Teams climb Great Wall of China {possibly near Badaling or Jinshanling?}
PIT STOP in/near Beijing? Drive to Erlyan and pit stop there?

I’m going to guess for now that with just an hour & a half, they’ll pit in China and do Mongolia in the 2nd episode. With only 90 minutes, I think they’ll use a lot of footage introducing us to the teams.

Am I forgetting anything? They've kept this one in the dark pretty well, it seems.

We can make our own promos. Just study photos of places we know the race is going (or might pass through). Curepipe (http://www.expeditions.pl/tapety/2002_mauritius.1024x0768/061%20Curepipe%20Widok%20na%20Mauritius.JPG)? Halong Bay (http://www.pacificvillage.org/villagevoices/vietnamstudent05/halong%20bay.jpg), maybe? When the title sequence shows on Sunday, we can knock out the caps in short order. Any bets on a lemur (http://images.wildmadagascar.org/pictures/berenty/ring_210048.jpg) replacing the langur and tiger from past seasons?

Great, Puddin!

Now we know that both team members must climb the wall -- we've seen Mary & David both doing it.

As for that pic of Sarah, one of the previews mentioned something about teams navigating their way thru the streets of Beijing (where they find the game's first twist). Maybe Sarah is performing this roadblock?

Gotcha -- I didn't catch the different shirt on Sarah. Here's the one pic from Kuwait that we thought might be Sarah... she has a blue shirt there. Maybe the pink shirt one is in Hanoi?

There's a part of the wall in Badaling (Juyongguan Pass) where we'd been looking with flags like in the Tom/David pic. No real hard & fast matches yet...

Sorry for the post frenzy all of a sudden -- do you think the new twist is that both team members have to perform the roadblocks? This would explain why Dustin & Kandice are BOTH performing the one in the pic earlier and/or why both team members are climbing the wall... just a thought.

'Race' stays right on pace

10th edition kicks off Sun.

If you don't want to root for a pair of cheerleaders, the male models, the gay couple or two inner-city single moms, you can root for the team of robed and bearded Muslims from Cleveland or Sarah Reinertsen, who has a metal leg.
Watching Reinertsen battle to climb her way up the Great Wall of China, a task that requires balance much more easily achieved with two regular legs, is one of those rare moments on "reality" shows that transcends its setup.
It makes the viewer want to stop and watch - not just because there's an image on a screen, but because you sense there's a lot more going on there than a TV moment.
Naturally, the producers and much of the audience expect and hope things will take an adversarial turn.
But meanwhile, many of the dramas are charmingly small, like blissful couples turning snippy when they can't agree on whether to get off the interstate and try to find an alternative route to the airport.
Because part of the competition involves physical challenges, like climbing up the wall, viewers will quickly figure that contestants who are younger and in better shape, like male models Tyler Denk and James Branaman, may have an advantage over, say, 52-year-old Duke Marcoccio or other entrants who look to be in less than Parris Island fighting shape.
But winning the race also requires luck, timing and even small bursts of thinking, among other built-in equalizers.
Marcoccio, for instance, doesn't flinch when one of the challenges in Beijing is to eat a plate of fish eyes.
That sort of yuck moment is mandatory in the "reality TV" biz. Still, the new "Amazing Race" rises above other shows in its sometimes dubious genre because its most interesting moments are the small human ones, not the ones manufactured for TV.

Didn't we note somewhere that the ROADBLOCK in Beijing delt with a horrible food challenge?  If so, this would be a twist since no previous TAR has had a roadblock in the first ep, and certainly not an awful food challenge which always comes later.

This may be a match for the night street scene in puddin's preview vidcaps.  It's apparently Beijing.  Don't ask me where in Beijing this is, but it's a wide street.  First pix is the original vidcap, and second is what appears to be a daytime view.

Nice work Boingo on the HH. Revisiting the place doesn't seem to me to be in the best of taste, but BVM has pulled some groaners before  :groan:.
On a different topic, the seaplanes are registered to Kenmore Air (http://www.kenmoreair.com/); didn't somebody post earlier about seaplane companies?

I'm guessing that showing the "Hanoi Hilton" may have been one of the conditions of filming the race in Vietnam.  Wonder if John McCain watches TAR?

Puddin, I'm clueless on the "Chinese delicacy/fish eyes barf fest.  Interesting.... that appears to be fish he's poking at with the sticks.  Maybe eat the whole fish, instead of just the eyes.   :snicker:  Also, looks like a place setting for one at each of the tables.

YES to enduring 16 years of miserable Mandarin lessons!

金宅门 (pronounced Jinzhaimen) is what Tom and Terry are looking for. It translates into 'Golden House'. And if that's arriving in the airport at night, it most likely will lead us to a night food challenge in Beijing. I'm thinking the speed of completing this task will earn teams the 'segregated bunching tickets' the next morning, in tradtion with each and every premiere.

国烤鱼 yielded 蜀国烤鱼 (Zhuguo Kaoyu) on Google. It translates approximately into 'Zhu Dynasty Grilled Fish'.

Will look up the addresses now.

Both restaurants are in the 崇文 Chongwen District, just south of Tiananmen (and by extension, the Meridian Gate).

金宅门食府 (http://www.dianping.com/shop/512996): 前门东大街18号,  18 Qianmendong Dajie, 18 E Front Gate Street
Public rating of 4/10. You know how critical the Chinese are about food.

蜀国烤鱼 (http://www.dianping.com/search/k/2/10/name/%E8%9C%80%E5%9B%BD%E7%83%A4%E9%B1%BC): 东直门内大街15号-6号, 6-15 Dongzhimen Nei Dajie, 6-15 Inner E Straight Gate Street
Specialty? Fish of course! But the first comment: "There's too little sauce in the grilled fish. The charcoal's not too hot either. Pretty much standard fare on this street." The street in question is Guijie, famous for its entire stretch of restaurants.

And oh yeah. Fish eyes are eaten in China. Just not ONLY the fish eyes. How is that supposed to be filling?

2 teams eliminated??  :o

Cleveland buddies add to diversity in Amazing Race'

The competition has a long way and many twists to go, so it's not giving anything away to reveal that, speeding to the airport, Abdul-Mani and Rudolph start out in first place. Anyone who has watched previous editions of "The Amazing Race" knows this means nothing.

"I'm very aggressive," says Abdul-Mani, who takes the wheel as they race to the airport. "He's a somewhat passive guy, which is good, because we've got to have that blend."

So half of the field will get to Beijing with about an hour advantage. It would spoil the fun to reveal much more, but merely to whet your appetite for what's ahead, let me serve up the idea of a food challenge in China.
"I'm from Cleveland, Ohio," Abdul-Mani says with a laugh. "What do I know about chopsticks?"

There are two major destination points in Sunday's premiere. The second is the Great Wall of China.

And here's the first surprise Keoghan said would be waiting for them: At each destination, the last-place team is eliminated. That's right. When "The Amazing Race" settles into its new regular time period, 8-9 p.m. Sundays, on Sept. 24, it will be missing two teams.

How do the Cleveland guys fare? Well, it's an impeachable offense for a TV critic to even suggest which teams are sent packing. You'll just need to make the trip to Beijing and the Great Wall to discover the identity of the eliminated duos.

It's a thrilling ride, and that's because the magic of "The Amazing Race" is in the editing. Moving at a breathless pace, each episode slyly juxtaposes race footage with comments and byplay from the participants. In the expert ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ hands of these crafty editors, a drive to the airport thunders across the screen like a life-and- death chariot race.

You need to remind yourself every once in a while, "Hey, they're just looking for the airport's rental lot. This isn't Charlton Heston in danger of flipping a chariot in 'Ben Hur.' "

The producers cleverly suck you in, though, wowing you along the way with exotic locations and magnificent scenery. The panoramas stun you while the personalities intrigue you. That's what always has made this "Race" so amazing.

Right, but they indicate roadblocks in (1) China, (2) Mongolia, and (3) Viet Nam.

It is starting to look like that is the order for the first three legs, and New Zealand is being passed by!!

Another thought on the ROADBLOCK  in Beijing.  Maybe one team member has to cook the meal on the wok, and the other poor soul has to eat it with chopsticks.

Right, but they indicate roadblocks in (1) China, (2) Mongolia, and (3) Viet Nam.

It is starting to look like that is the order for the first three legs, and New Zealand is being passed by!!
thats what I've been trying to say  ! The tvguide article

I don't think this is right.  Don't think there is enough time to include leg one (Beijing) and leg two (Mongolia) in the first ep. Therefore, doubt that there will be two eliminations in the first ep.

assumes the Gold House / food Roadblock is one destination .
Wall of China the second destination .
It sounds like the writer saw the premiere video ?

ETA: maybe thats the twist?
The race begins in Seattle, Wash. when Teams begin jockeying for available flights to the first destination, Beijing, China.  Once there, Teams are faced with their first Roadblock, which requires them to feast on a Chinese delicacy.  As the racers continue to navigate their way through the busy streets of Beijing, they are faced with the game's first twist.  Meanwhile, the racer's physical prowess is put to the test when they must climb a portion of the Great Wall of China.

Way more than enough proof that they get on the first flight? Does the sign say United?

A search yields UA875 as the only direct flight to Tokyo (where they connect to another airlines, United doesn't serve that route). It departs at 1:13pm and arrives at 3:25pm the next day. Tokyo is about two hours away from Beijing, so the timing would seem correct for them to arrive at night.

The Plain Dealer link says that the Great Wall is the second of two elimination points. Which would mean that the first is within Beijing proper, with Mongolia coming after the wall if the producers have any geographical sense or if the spoilers are correct. Right off the bat, soon after the food, on the night they arrive at Beijing? That would be totally cruel.

Oh, and the sign behind?

Reads 渔夫烤鱼 (couldn't decipher it just now, no idea why). Also on 东直门簋街, so it rules out any franchises that may exist elsewhere in Beijing. However, this poses a slight problem. This photo is quite a distance away from the Golden House, even though they are in the same district. Just an establishing shot?

How do the Cleveland guys fare? Well, it's an impeachable offense for a TV critic to even suggest which teams are sent packing. You'll just need to make the trip to Beijing and the Great Wall to discover the identity of the eliminated duos.

;D Just clearing out some odds-and-ends, mainly obvious locations in the vidcaps.  Ho-hum...  :snicker:

Looks like after arriving, they head to the Shuttle Bus/ Taxi stand area at the airport.   :plane:

ETA: Looks like racers take a taxi from tha airport to their first destination.  Just noticed, they arrive in the evening, but shot from inside of bus clearly shows a lot of daylight.  Hmmm.....  :-\    :groan:  Maybe the bus is taking the racers to the Great Wall the day after.

My guess is that's a Seatac shuttle from this company (http://www.shuttlepark.com/shuttlepark/index.htm) or something similar: there's English on the windows and context in the cap ("Hi! We're racers too!  B:)  B:) ")

Banzai  :jumpy: Thank you !!
so thats what Kar/Lyn say :
Teammates Lyn and Karlyn are fascinated by the thought of being in China, with one of them remarking that "people in China love us folks from Alabama because of that movie 'Forrest Gump.

so its TRUE !!! 2 elims !!

The episode flies by, and longtime viewers should be warned that there are some surprises this season. One of which pops up very unexpectedly at about the halfway point of the first leg, when host Phil Keoghan makes an unexpected appearance.

The producers take full advantage of the Chinese landscape, ending the first leg of the race with a brutal rope climb up the side of the Great Wall of China. It's a segment that is both harrowing to watch and also fascinating to see strictly on its visual terms. It's an almost perfect "Amazing Race" challenge, and it sets a high bar for the rest of the season.

I think Bilal did a good job at the fish Roadblock.

Bilal looks happy in the taxi confession. He's not sick like other racers in the caviar Roadblock.
They probably got lost on the way to the rest stop but I think they did OK at the Roadblock.

So they all get on the first flight? Lyn/Karlyn seem happy enough here...

So we have Peter/Sarah, Kellie/Jamie, Erwin/Godwin, Lyn/Karlyn, Duke/Lauren (That's Duke on the right of the cap, right?) Is that a racer behind Dustin? Sound man?

My speculation (based on TAR tradition)
The food task grants teams a ticket for the Hutong rickshaw tour the next morning, which will bring them to Beihai park (tai chi is practiced VERY EARLY in the morning). According to the AOL promo, this means Tyler and James get to leave just before Dustin and Kandice. Where the elimination is, I don't know. The Forbidden City perhaps?

Well, wind is blowing on Bilal/Sai'eed direction... looks like they are going to be the first team to say good-bye to the competition.

Phil warns the teams early on that there will be some surprises on the race, and he’s not kidding. The first surprise shows up on the first leg, and no one sees it coming (though one racer guesses it without even realizing it). I can’t tell you what the surprise is, of course, but it’ll keep the racers on their toes for the reason of the adventure.

As for the tasks, they aren’t much different from what teams have done in the past. There is a Roadblock on the first leg, which is rare, and it involves, food, unfortunately. The Detour offers a choice between a task that is physical but not necessarily time-consuming and a task that is less physical but possibly more time-consuming. Both require accuracy and attention to detail.

One rarity, however, is that teams must complete a very physical task in order to reach the Pit Stop. This means that teams who get to the location of the Pit Stop first won’t necessarily get to the mat first. Instead of a footrace to the mat, which is what we usually see, we see a different kind of struggle. It’s a good determination of who is physically fit and who will have more trouble with those kinds of activities.

^^ That's a minor spoiler. They're goner  ???

Quote
Erwin & Godwin: These brothers are strong and smart, but that’s not all the race is about - there’s also an element of luck. Unfortunately, they don’t have a whole lot of it. But fortunately, they’re in pretty good spirits anyway.

The Cho brothers also have some bad lucks.

This sounds like the pit stop matt is located on the Great Wall of China (outside of Beijing) but teams must climb the wall to reach the matt!! This should be interesting.  Reaching the mat location first may not mean that you will be on the matt first!

It's a different view, and different season, but it sure looks similar to the building in Bei Hai Park, northwest of Forbidden City, Beijing.

LOL...more likely it's a Tai Chi Chuan exercise session, but you may be right about finding the right person with the clue.

If it is right then the promo shot was taken between 9:18 and 10:12 am (assumes May 29th)

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet (Sorry if it has).  But according to aintitcool there is a big rig accident that makes the beginning leg a misery.  And it seems it is in seattle.

They also mention that Sarah and her robot leg (their word not mine) are feeatured promoniently in the  episodes (I see a Charla edit, for over coming her disability).

Which is cool I loved Charla (Mirna was the anti-christ, hopefully Peter will be cool).

Herc Quite Enjoys Sunday’s
90-Minute AMAZING RACE Premiere!!

I am – Hercules!!

Need a reason to check in on Sunday’s season premiere of “The Amazing Race”? One of the contestants has a robot leg (!), and a lot of interesting stuff happens to her and that leg within the first episode.

The typically compelling first episode starts everybody’s journey in rainy Seattle, where a bigrig crash makes the first leg of the race a misery.

But before Phil yells “go!” he advises contestants that there will be surprises this season they’ll “never expect.” Indeed, at least one major surprise that will change the complexion of the race surfaces in the very first episode.

Those concerned with racial sensitivities should be warned that while “Survivor” only featured four racially pure teams, “The Amazing Race” features no fewer than 12!!

The contestants:

* “Peter & Sarah, newly dating triathletes from Southern California.” Both are cute and blonde. Sarah, 31, a motivational speaker, has an amazing robot leg where her real one should be. Peter, 35, builds artificial legs for a living, which really gets Sarah hot! Get this: though Sarah is a triathlete, her missing limb allows her to pre-board flights! (The single-mother team takes much umbrudge!)

* “Bilal & Sa’eed, best friends from Cleveland, Ohio.” Both are heavyset thirtysomething African-American Muslims with a most impressive quantity of facial hair. They say stuff like “Allah is the greatest!” and “I’m from Cleveland Ohio! What do I know about chopsticks!” For hefty men, they move quickly! Though not as into Jesus as most Americans, they intend to stop and pray plenty along the way.

* “Rob and Kimberly, dating, from Los Angeles.” Kimberly, 28, is a piping-hot public relations girl. Rob is a surly 31-year-old bartender.

* “Dustin & Kandice, beauty queens from New York City.” Hot blondes both, they met while rooming together as Miss America contestants. Dustin, 26 and a marketing exec, was Miss California. Kandice, 24 and a Rockette, was Miss New York.

* “David & Mary, married, coal miner and housewife from Stone, Kentucky.” Tubby hillbillies in their early thirties! David’s a mouthbreather. Mary, who sounds exactly like Dolly Parton, confides they’ve never been beyond Tennessee.

* “Erwin & Godwin, brothers from the San Franciso Bay area.” Korean-American eggheads! Godwin, 29, is a financial analyst. Erwin, 32, is an insurance company manager.

* “Duke & Lauren, father and daughter from Long Island.” Lauren, 26, is a supercute speech and language pathologist. Duke, 52, is a tour-company owner who cries like a little bitch because Lauren has taken to sleeping with a woman.

* “Vipul & Arti, husband and wife from Orlando, Florida.” The show’s first Indian-American team. Arti, female and 27, is a nutritional educator; Vipul, male and 29, is in sales. They’ve been married two years. He introduces himself as “Vipul of the People.” She’s way too hot for him.

* “Kellie & Jamie, best friends and cheerleaders from Columbia, South Carolina.” One just graduated college; the other studies broadcast journalism. Both are extra-pretty, 22 and unafraid to strip down to their minis and cartwheel!

* “Tyler and James, recovering drug addicts and models from Hollywood, California.” They appear to maintain a collection of pouty polaroids from their days as substance abusers. It’s impossible to look at them and not whisper “Zoolander.”

* “Lyn & Karlyn, lifelong friends and single mothers from Birmingham, Alabama.” Both are black, 32 and have “lyn” in their names. Lyn teaches 4th grade; Karlyn is a program analyst. Again, they do not cotton to that pretty little one-legged white girl!

* “Tom & Terry, boyfriends from New York City.” Balding white men who take manicures together. Tom, 39, is a college admissions director. Terry, 45, is a special events director. As with all of “Amazing Race’s” homosexuals, they are never depicted kissing each other, even when they discover they’ve survive an eliminations.

Learn what all the amazing racers look like here.

8:30 p.m. Sunday. CBS.

What I found something before someone else, impossible.

I might die of shock before tonights episode.

ANd by the way 5 hours to

and TV guide's Matt Roush gives the episode a glowing review calling the final detour one of hte hardest and that one of the contestants says "It can't be worse then childbirth?"  I love that line and its the team from Alabama.

Here is the Big Rig accident in Seattle (http://archives.seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/texis.cgi/web/vortex/display?slug=dige28m&date=20060528&query=accident).

Quote
Seattle

A series of accidents on Interstate 5 near the Washington State Convention and Trade Center snarled traffic Saturday morning.

The first accident, at 3:15 a.m., occurred when two semitrucks southbound on I-5 collided while changing lanes. One truck spilled an estimated 100 gallons of diesel fuel on the roadway, triggering a second accident involving two cars.

The accidents and spill closed all southbound lanes until about 6 a.m., with traffic detoured onto the James Street exit, said Trooper Courtney Stewart of the Washington State Patrol. I-5 reopened after the state Department of Transportation sanded the highway.

Three hours later, two southbound lanes at the convention center were again closed when a tanker truck hit a wet patch of road, skidded across all lanes of traffic, slammed into a barrier and jackknifed.

The driver "didn't touch anyone, miraculously," Stewart said. The two left lanes were closed until about noon, causing a "horrid" backup that stretched to Northgate, she said.

Neither accident caused serious injuries. Rain-slick roadways contributed to both accidents, she said.

Okay everyone how the hell do you quote?
USATODAY
Critic Corner

Some shows don't need self-created controversies to draw attention. They can fall back on proven quality — like The Amazing Race (CBS, Sunday, 8:30 ET/PT), which kicks off a new season with a 90-minute special that just may be the show's best start yet. This time, the 12 teams gather in Seattle and head immediately to Beijing, where architectural glories and a few new game surprises await.

Race's value as a visually splendid travelogue can't be underestimated, particularly when it has the splendors of Beijing to display. But the show rises and falls on its players, and these 24 racers appear to be particularly strong and admirably diverse, as the Race has been since its inception. Though favorites will emerge and change, in the early going I'm rooting for Mary, the feisty, friendly wife of a Kentucky coal miner, who compares landing in China to "dropping a 30-year-old baby in the world and telling him, 'Just go.' " You go, Mary.

Here is a Google Maps directions map from Gas Works Park to Sea-Tac.

The location of the big rig accident is marked.  The article says that traffic was backed up to Northgate which is well north of the place where teams would be getting on the 5 freeway.  So they should have have a chance to see that the freeway was clogged before they got on it.

So the clear best path to take to get to Sea-Tac would have been via the Aurora Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct.

I bet the teams get plenty of chances to see that going by the 5 is a bad idea:

1)  Seaplane view of growing backup
2)  While standing on the hill at Gasworks Park you can see the 5as it goes along the western edge of Lake Union.

So we will see who is paying attention!

The Washington DOT doesn't keep a video archive, but they do have a map archive (http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/Traffic/Seattle/Flowmaps/Archive/).The first cap is a map of 11a.m. on the 27th. Chateau is right; I wonder if any teams used the 99, or maybe they drove the streets like Lyn/Karlyn. I don't know the name of the building near the seaplane landing, but according to the webcam shot it's somewhere near I-5 and Mercer.

Here is the faster alternative that some teams may have heard about.

For some reason I had to trick the mapping service by forcing it to go to points along the way.  So it comes in three parts.

Locals should be aware of this route.  I wasn't but I've learned

Thanks; I should have looked for the shadows. The Kenmore air terminal (where the racers walked away from the seaplanes) is on the lower-left of the picture. I've included a kmz; the markers are the plane design (yellow bands) and the median strip down the pier.

So the sea plane drop off spot is not close to Gasworks Park.  They will have to ride in cars or a bus to get to the starting line.

Even one more chance to observe the mess on the freeway!   :lol3:

SEASON PREMIERE
8:30-10PM

The Amazing Race (CBS) Race may have won a fourth Emmy for best reality show, but after last year's weak family theme, change was in order. So prepare for a few firsts: the first Indian-American couple, the first Muslim duo, and the first player with an artificial leg. But lest you get swallowed by all that cultural depth, there's plenty of shallow: The male-model duo gets its pick of pretty from two former Miss America contestants and a pair of University of South Carolina cheerleaders. So best of luck, boys — and do try to remember that you're in it for the money.

Gang, we done good, even if I say so myself

Had it all down pretty tight except for the second task for the DETOUR - the brickyard was never shown.  But we had the ROADBLOCK down cold.  We speculated that the first ELIMINATION would occur before the over-night wait for "early departure times", and we had the WALL CLIMB as the task that had to be done to reach the pit stop on top of the Great Wall.    I think we had half of the early elims right, but were off on the second pair.  No comment yet in the press that two of the four "ethnic" type couples lost out on the first two elims.  We have the Asian pair and African-American pair still in the race.

Now it is on to Mongolia.

I wonder if this is going to be the pattern to have a hard task at the spot of the pit stop before teams reach the mat???  Should lead to some interesting times.

I haven't checked the other threads yet, but to my first quick look the producers are playing it close to the vest on the quick pix in the opening and seem to concentrate on scenes from China, Mongolia, and Viet Nam with just the one shot of the Kuwait water towers.  Will look closer later today.

But we have started off with a bang on TAR10.  Thanks to Puddin  :hrt: for keeping us on the straight and narrow :hearts:

Hope this doesn't continue like this, as we are getting to see less and less of the places they travel, and more of the "coal miners wife's bad teeth".  Eeeeek!  Honey, get a better dentist.    The editing is a lot tighter now, lots of quick cuts, dramatic music everywhere, and what's up with Phils hair?  Way too much gel.   :snicker:  OK, rant is over, back to the race.

Eep! What a show this will be. I taped it last night (didn't realise Extreme Makeover: HE was on, though it was from last season, but I still never saw it)...and will go home tonight and watch it.

However, from what I did see, those cheerleader girls are really going to annoy me if they do little cheers the whole while they're still in it. I was also surpised to see the second team eliminated (sorry, don't know names yet)...even after Candice and her teammate struggled to find the Gold House restaurant. :P

For what its worth:

It really paid off to be able to avoid the gridlock on I5 on the way to SEA-TAC airport; the first four teams to end up on the Great Wall were all in that first plane.  Lyn and Karylyn and David and Mary almost failed on the wall and ended up back in the pack at 9 and 10.

From the way the shadows fell as the 10 teams neared the mat and Phil it does not look like too much time expired between the first arrival and the tenth; so on the departure on the morrow the teams should be bunched up.

FWIW, we were wondering about that red thing in the guard's hand -- it's the departure time card they had to pull off the kiosk. Peter/Sarah are the first team to leave, and they've just given the guard their card.

Cleveland team finds seconds matter in 'Amazing Race'
..............
After they were eliminated, Abdul-Mani and Rudolph continued traveling with the "Amazing Race" production. Reality shows such as "Survivor" and "Amazing Race" often keep eliminated contestants away from home while the rest of the show plays out so no one gets a hint of the show's outcome.

It was frustrating watching the other contestants participating in the challenges when they couldn't join in, Rudolph said.
