Yay Puddin for the column! It's definitely new. TAR hasn't been anywhere near Stuttgart (nearest venture is Friedrichshafen, Germany and Schauffhausen, Switzerland in TAR3). And here to report, the taxis are Greek!

They're on the island of Zakynthos, off the Peloponnese Peninsula, geographically closer to Sicily than you can ever get. Hellenic Mediterranean Lines (not the boat in the vidcaps though) offers a service from Bridici (on the heel of Italy's boot) to the island. Could this be the link to Greece?
I'm now searching to see if our ferry plies between Zakynthos and the Greek mainland.

#1 was in a commercial for TAR8.
It was for the two hour show that had them leaving Costa Rica and ending up at Lake Powell.
And #25 may have been the beach where they had the pit stop in Costa Rica.]
#26 is definitelly one of those 300 special planes that they flew at sunrize in Arizona.
I have been moving TAR8 off of my hard drive to DVD, that's why I recognized these.

That got me looking as well. There aren't many photos of the Schlossplatz facing the other way, but I found this one (http://community.webshots.com/photo/380596076/1380600962068102491mccUQa) that explains the arabesque: it's a gazebo in the square.

Wow! Lots of new stuff to play with. Updated route spec below with some changes based on the following info:
1. Stuttgard, Germany added to the route after Rome/Greece b/c of the 9-team-spoiler in Rome.
2. TBC leg moved from Australia to Europe. The Italy/Greece legs were getting so crowded that it makes a better fit.
3. Based on how the legs break down, Athens is a more likely pit stop than Corinth for that leg (the night-time shot of the Parthenon fits the timeline at the end of that leg).

Was still pondering about the temple/monkey puzzle, so I got on a flight to Thailand to try to clear things up. (Well, actually, it was a holiday. But hey, who would go to Lopburi on their own?) Here's what I found...
Prang Sam Yot, Lopburi, Thailand
Your guesses were right! The temple in the previews are of Prang Sam Yot in Lopburi. Not as famous as I thought it would be, though, many locals couldn't recognize which temple the picture in the preview was. Finally got some help from the Tourist Office to get me to the temple. The picture is taken from the east side of the complex, framing only the two southern tops (out of three). Yeah, yeah, the monkeys are there alright. Everywhere.
Wanted to get some team and production information, but the two ladies mannning the ticket office didn't speak English (and I, unfortunately, not Thai). They did, however, show me where the field with the Thai boy monk was... right outside the temple, on Thanon Wichayen. The picture was taken facing east.
Elephant Kraal, Ayuthaya, Thailand
Following the suggestions from the board, made my way to Ayuthaya. It's a two hour bus ride to the town from Lopburi (the Thai bus system is surprisingly brilliant, the teams won't have any trouble) and a half-hour tuk-tuk ride out of town to the Elephant Kraal. I'm still not sure if the race came here. It's a kinda small area (say, three football fields) and not a lot of people (certainly not tourists) around. There's not much going on, though I did see a platform where one can ride on an elephant. Didn't see any uniformed people (from pre-race promotion videos) in the area.
The sandy patches, yeah, they match, and the fences kind of do too. While asking a lady working in the management there about filming and stuff, she did say that there were production teams from time to time, but doesn't remember anything happening in December last year. She seemed genuine enough, didn't seem like a cover up. Take a look at the photos and decide for yourselves?

:tup: Thanks for solving the boy monk, Neobie. Is it possible there's more than one kraal in Ayutthaya? The uniforms on the tourist mahouts pictured here (http://www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com/bigmap/outoftown/thailand/ayutthaya/elephantride/index.htm) are similar to the ones we've seen before, but the landscape looks different: some ruins and a traffic roundabout are nearby.

I'm inclined to think there's only one kraal in Ayuthaya (at least Lonely Planet tells me so). It's 4km from the centre of town, so perhaps the elephants can be herded out to the city for tour groups. From the website, Chinese couple with camcorders? 100% belonging to a tour group.
Unpacking my photos from the trip, I'm thinking the wat in the website is Wat Ratburana (also Wat Ratchaburana) right in the centre of town. Nearby are the only two roundabouts in town (both with the King's pictures). However, Ayuthaya is covered head to toe with ruins and the King's pictures, so I can't say anything with certainty as of now.

So if the taxis are in Germany (I'm still not 100% sure, some of the signs on the German taxis were off to the side) does that mean that Zakinthos is off the list?
