THE RACE INTENSIFIES AS SAFETY DIVERS ARE SENT IN TO RESCUE ONE RACER, WHILE ANOTHER RACER LOSES CONTROL OF THEIR CAR DURING A CHALLENGE, ON A SPECIAL TWO-HOUR EDITION OF "THE AMAZING RACE 8," TUESDAY, NOV. 8
"You Look Ridiculous" -- Safety divers are forced to rescue one of the racers who's struggling to stay afloat during a challenge, on a special two-hour episode of THE AMAZING RACE 8, Tuesday, Nov. 8 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. Phil Keoghan is the host of the series.
One family watches as one of their own takes an uncontrollable spin in a car during one of the challenges. Also, racers must leave their fear of heights on the ground as teams endure the flight of a lifetime filled with gravity-defying activities. Meanwhile, the rivalry between two families escalates into a high-speed food fight.

It looks like Leg 7 Arizona (?) will be a NONELIMINATION
and then Leg 8 Wyoming (?) will be ELIMINATION so that there will only be ONE family on TES November 9th
Nov. 15 Leg 9 NONELIMINATION
Nov. 22 Leg 10 ELIMINATION and Leg 11 in two-hour finale. This puts finale into the important November Sweeps and not until December when nobody is watching due to Christmas holidays. Makes a lot of sense. This also accounts for SEVEN elimintion legs as announced by Phil in the beginning.

How about that; I called Phoenix next and so be it. Continental has a nice early flight direct leaving at 6:45AM and American has a flight at 9:05AM and Air West at 7:15AM so lots of early flights to go direct from SJO to PHX. Then on to the adobe mission we finally indentified and then up to Monument Valley and then perhaps on to Utah and the Park City hot air caper! Waiting to see what Puddin pulls up from AOL.

Could this be the airport in Meza Arizona? Roadblock to do with one team member losing their cookies doing loop de loops in an Extra 3001 of the Fighter Combat International.
Then on to the La Puestra del Sol outside of Phoenix.

If someone can see the N# on the plane I can look it up and see who it is registered to.
Also I know there is alot of flying in Arizona. Test flights etc. Alot to do with the Air Force, but also Blue Angels etc. So maybe there is an area that they do this on a regular basis.

Looks good. The site claims they have both motor trips and oar trips, so it fits with the vidcap. Next:
- The beach where Papa almost sinks (I haven't seen ep6 yet--Quepos beach?).
- A winery? with some nasty looking barrels.
- Gathering wood next to a crane (construction crane? container crane?)

Looks like in Costa Rica they do a swim thing and something with harvesting and hauling sugarcane.
There are lots of pretty beaches just south of Quepos in Manuel Antonio. There are palm trees in the background with papa Paolo swimming.
A quick look I found there are more wineries in Arizona than I would have thought.

Krazi, I like your idea better than Arizona wine. Those barrels are soooooo old looking. And the two wineries I could find in the Phoenix to Sedona region did not show them.

Probably empty casks; or they will be empty by the time the teams try to find the five with clues. Could this be a DETOUR - load sugar cane or drink the rum (well actually find the clue in the rum)? Both in Costa Rica?
Looks like Papa Paolo's swim on the beach in Costa Rica may be a DETOUR; I thought at first it might be something that happened during their "mandatory rest period" but note that the Paolos have all their backpacks and camping gear piled on a table in front of Ma Paolo and it looks like one of the Linz boys (with orange headband) behind them.
And we may have another DETOUR in the 360 degree loop one team member makes in the Extra 3001. This must be a DETOUR as I just noticed the red band on top of the clue being read by the Bransen Girls.
And do we have another DETOUR in the mini-car race?
That makes three detours in two legs. Something is not right so perhaps each team member has to race around the track in a set time as has been done in other events on previous TAR's.

The Linzs are shown doing both tasks.
I watched closely and picked up some things:
1. When the Linzs are traveling down the river in the raft they jump into the water into a waiting canoe and 5 canoes are there (they are in the lead at this point??). Then they are shown bailing water out of the canoe.
2. Godlewskis appear to be wearing different clothes for race cars and stunt plane even though they are both in Arizona.
3. Linzs are wearing the same clothes for sugarcane and barrels (confirms Costa Rica for barrels)
4. Teams shown doing tasks:
Linzs are shown on 4 tasks -- rum barrels, sugarcane, river canoe, and stunt plane
Paolos are shown on 3 -- swimming, sugarcane, and stunt plane
Godlewskis on 2 -- race cars and stunt plane (reading clue though could be another voiceover)

Just some observations:
The Linzen could start with the Rum Barrels and switch to sugar cane. They seemed daunted by the task.
Hoover Dam is awesome. Been there. The dam and the river rafts/rowboats are co-located: Page, Arizona/Lake Powell. This location is way north of Phoenix and halfway to Park City, Utah

Looking on Goggle Earth at the Williams Gateway Airport, the observation platform faces due east. So the Linzs are looking into the morning sun, right???? That is the extent of my sun/shadow detective work. I wouldn't even attempt anything more complicated like what time of morning. I'll leave that up to you experts. :tada:

I was just using the dam to help pin down the rafting spot. Compare the vidcap with the album shot below--not an exact match, but pretty close. Where does Papa Paolo's swim fit in? It seems to be right there by the pit stop. Would the day start with a ROADBLOCK swim? Only Papa seems to be dressed for the swim and there seems to be a Linz brother standing behind the Paolos. And what are the rules if a team member cannot finish a ROADBLOCK? I seem to remember that Rob had to wait four hours after the next team arrived when he couldn't finish the four pounds of meat in Argentina. If this is the case here, the Paolos are going to fall way behind. So after they finish the sugar cane gig, do they arrive at the pit stop last and it is they who have to pile on the clothing to "look rediculous"?
So does all of Ep 7 take place in Costa Rica and Ep 8 begin with the teams flying to Arizona?
But the shot of the teams at the ROADBLOCK air show in Mexa, AZ seem to be early morning shots, so perhaps they fly to Arizona during Ep 7 and have a pit stop somewhere there.
If the white water rafting is near Page, AZ this might be the last task before the pit stop since it is on the way toward Park City, Utah which looks to be the site of Ep 9 which takes teams to a "new height" - read: Hot Air Balloon Ride.

I give up looking for pictures. :hang: I found a few Rum distilleries in Costa Rica, but no pictures that match the previews, nor tours of these distilleries. The distillery FANAL, ran by the government, used to be in downtown San Jose, but that location is now a Museum, which actually still has some of the old distillery items, but found no barrels. :sad:
So at least we can make a good assumption that the barrels are RUM }alc{ and the racers are still in the Central America area for these scenes.

One of these days I'll stop calling a Detour and Roadblock and a Roadblock a Detour
Trying to put some order into the scheme of things - and keep in mind that the CBS and AOL previews always keep some things hidden from our prying eyes:
Ep. 7 (First Hour)
First off from the arrival times at the beach in our last endearing episode, the tide is fairly up high when the Paolos, Linz and Bransen families arrive within minutes of eachother. Although cloudy (working back from the following) it looks to be early afternoon. After a lengthy wait, the tide is now much lower, the Godlewskis arrive and the shadows are lengthening. The Weaver arrive and the tide is way out and the shadows are even longer. And since the Gaghans are right on their tail we know the sun is setting since we hear Pa Gaghan exclaim "it's beautiful here with the sunset on the water". If the pitstop is only 12 or 36 hours we would be starting off in the blackness of the early morning; but it is daylight now so let's assume perhaps the pitstop was only 18 hours (happened before in Pennsylvania)
Looks like they leave the pitstop in the early morning for a bracing morning dip in the ocean. A ROADBLOCK since we see only Papa Paolo in the water with the rest of the Paolo family waiting on shore. But who else is in the water? There is someone else swimming and it looks like a cameraperson in scuba gear shooting Papa. Must be a planned event since we have underwater camerapeople standing (sic!) by.
Here they get a clue for a DETOUR: Cane or Drain. (l) Load a cart with sugar cane and cart it off to the sugar mill or (2) drain barrels or kegs hunting for a clue. There are five barrels with clues in a room containing hundreds and we hear Meg Linz "this could take forever" and so they opt out and go to Cane. #2 had been done several times before most recently when Gretchen had to find the tin box with the clue in India (TAR7 EP8).
Clue here may direct them to go to the San Jose airport and catch a plane back to the States - to Phoenix, AZ. There is an Americn Airlines flight out at 9:05AM arriving in PH at 4:55PM. At the airport they pick up a marked GMC Yukon SUV with a clue to drive to the La Puesta del Sol in Ft. McDowell National Reservation the pitstop for this leg of the race and one team "may be eliminated" Nope. This is the second of a predetermined number of Non-Elimination legs. The team who know they are running last has learned from the Godlewskies what to do: Pile on everything you own before Phil takes it away from you. So arriving on the mat, Phil is heard to say "You look rediculous!" Who? Your guess is as good as mine. But my money is on the Bransens since they are getting a minimum of face time in the previews.
Ep. 8 (Second Hour)
During the time in Arizona we have the following:
ROADBLOCK - Ride a stunt plane from the Fighter Combat International located in Meza, AZ This occurs very early in the morning; if the teams leave in the dead of night again, they probably will be faced with a wait at the airport for "open for business" pre-determined time. So everyone bunches up and each team at the git go runs for the number board to get their place in line after reading the ROADBLOCK CLUE.
DETOUR - One task might be to race around the mini-car race track in a pretermined time. The other task: unknown. Or this could be a second ROADBLOCK. Stange things have been happening in this series. But we have Ma Weaver racing and the three siblings on the sidelines worried; they do not look like they are waiting their turn, but they could be.
Planes or Racecars cannot both be part of a DETOUR since we have the Godlewski sisters at both
FINAL - Seems to be concerned with a white-water raft trip down Glen Canyon and then rowing themselves to a campsite which will be the pit stop. And one team will be eliminated tonight.
A lot of guess work and plenty of time to straighten it all out. So lets get at it oh faithful dectective you.
I wonder how long the teams will take to learn that the more physical a task seems to be, the quicker it can be done?

Good call puddin, here's another on a Bransen girl.
My best guess is that the hats came from the race car track so I checked out the Bondurant website. They sell them in the gift shop (see pic). They may not be the exact ones but it makes since that they got them there especially if it is a sponsorship thing.
This would mean that the race cars are a day before the stunt plane since the planes are first thing in the morning.

Hats off to youse for spotting same.
And with a blue clue at the race course it would mean a task to be done by all. So perhaps the same as the horse thing with Tara, each team member has to race around the Bondurant race course under a set time limit. Then they get clue to drive north from Chandler to the pit stop at La Puesta del Sol.
Next day begins (after thepit stop) at the Mesa, AZ airport (bunch 'em all up once again" for the ROADBLOCK aeroplane ride. Then perhaps off to the Wilderness River Adventure with some kind of a DETOUR before or after.
Pit stop for EP 8 could be in historic Lees Ferry the original crossing of the Colorado River and is located in area where many rafting trips take place and is at junction of Glen Canyon and the beginning of the Grand Canyon.

If that really is where they are then the time is between 10 am and noon. I'm not certain that is the location though. And the Weaver's are at a spot I can't find anywhere in my Google Earth.

Okay, now I'm getting somewhere.
They built a new track after the Google image was taken. From their website, brought to us by Slowhatch, I found some images of the new track and spectator structure that the Weavers and Godlewskis are seen at.
The photo with the big crowd is showing the backside of the spectator structure. Our teams were looking out the frontside.
The Godlewskis were basically looking in the direction that the blue arrow is coming from.
The Weavers were standing near the tip of the steel barricade. At the end that is closest to the camera in the recent aerial shot.
What this means is that East is to the Godlewskis left (sort of, there is that angle in the barrier) The steel beams that support the roof in the Godlewski shot point to the south. They are perpendicular to the long white building in the Google Earth image.
That gives us our orientation.
For the Godlewskis, the sun is coming in right along that steel barrier. That's at about 125 degrees azimuth. That happened at 11:25 am plus or minus 10 min.
For the Weaver's, I can't call it so precisely. The bad news is that the sun is considerably more eastward for their shadow. That means earlier in the day. The shadow from Rachel/Rebecca's chin gives the best indicator that he sun is coming from an azimuth at about 90 degrees. That happened at 9 am. Call it plus or minus one hour.

Another possibility for the river rafting is http://www.greatwesttours.com/tours/rafting.html.
They're based out of Sedona and bring you to the Glen Canyon Dam to begin the float trip. This could be what ties in Sedona from the intro clips. In some of the vid clips it looks like the bottom of the raft is black like the River Adventure Boats but in this one it looks like the blue goes down to the water like the Great West Tours boats. It's hard for me to tell if I'm looking at black bottomed boats or shadows and water reflection. Opinions?

The way it looks now is that the Mini-car race is a ROADBLOCK. The family members not racing seem to just stand around watching without preparing to get into the next car. Per the Weaver kids attitude I guess Ma Weaver is the only one who could do the race thing. If this is Ep8 (Second Hour) Roadblock, we need some kind of Detour. The raft trip seems to set to be part of a Detour. And from the looks of it the Linz family are in the lead here since there are five rowboats, skiffs, whatever on the bank. Or they are second if there were six boats there as has been the usual practive of Plus One.
It is approximately a 275 miles north from Mesa to Page AZ. That's a bout a 5 hour drive; so alot of time will be spent on the road in Ep8, unless they fly there by charter flight (which, of course, is possible)
If the teams do activity in San Jose before flying to Phoenix I doubt that they could get to the Mini-track in Chandler by 11:30AM let alone 9:00AM The earliest flight arriving in PHX from SJO is Continental 1485 which leaves at 6:45AM and arrives at 3:19PM. But this would not give time for Pa Paolo to drown if the sun rises at about 5:25AM. American (Sponsor) flight 2166 leaves at 9:05AM and arrives at 4:55PM (via Dallas). Sun sets in Phoenix at 7:35PM (Mountain Standard Time - Arizona does not go on Daylight Saving time) Sunrise is about 5:34AM.

I am pretty sure the sign says kilometros, that is the standard for Costa Rica. I think miles is used in the US.
I dont think the truck that is carring the sugar cane is used in the US.

There are rum distilleries in Nicarauga!!! And Fidel would not be so pleased on the latter. I really think the sugar cane etc is Central America somewhere. Unless it's Belize or Puerto Rico.

Well since you asked .... I did a search for rum distilleries in Central America and came up with one in Nicaragua. While trying to find out more about the distillery I found someone's trip report with some interesting info. Here's part of it:
"Chichigalpa is a town 122 km northwest of Managua. Chichigalpa is located in the district of Chinandega. Chinandega is a largely agricultural district, growing sugar cane. It also contains the largest sugar mill in Nicaragua, the Ingénio San Antonio, as well as the Flor de Caña rum distillery. The port of Corinto, one of the most active in the Pacific, is also located in Chinandega. Two of the most important of the many volcanoes of Nicaragua are also here: Cosigüina and San Cristobal. The capital of the district is the city of Chinandega.
The town of Chichigalpa is next to the Ingénio and the distillery and in the shadow of San Cristobal."
So here we have a sugarcane mill close to a rum distillery. Managua is the capital of Nicaragua and has flights from Costa Rica. It is 75 miles from Managua to Chichigalpa. It is also close to Pacific coast beaches.
Finding info on the area, especially pictures isn't easy. I did get one of the sugarcane mill. The rum company does have a website but doesn't offer too much info. If we could get the date that Phil is seen leaving the Costa Rica airport to cooperate it might work.

I can't put my finger on it but I do recall that Phil (or BVM) was quoted saying that this race went to two new countries that TAR has never been to before. If that is still true then I would not expect another.

I think I found the barrels in Costa Rica {**}.
There is a place that makes rum and is called Centenario Internacional ( Costa Rica Premium Rum ).
There are pictures with barrels similar like the ones one the previews. I cannot paste the picture. And have not found out where they are located in Costa Rica. But I will keep looking.

It's a puzzlement.
Could we be wrong and the two hour ep on Tuesday is in fact only one leg with one pit stop?
Because there was no mention of a castoff team for TAR during the week preview of TES on CBS Sunday Morning. This has held up over the years when there is a NON ELIMINATION leg for TAR.
But it makes no sense to have a two hour, two leg race without a pitstop after the first hour. Puddin, what does the advance CBS schedule say for Wednesday?
I am still of the impression that the first hour on Tuesday will start in Costa Rica with teams flying to Phoenix and then driving down to Chandler for the mini car race and then up north again to Fort McDowell National Reservation and the pit stop at La Puesta del Sol. This would be NON ELIMINATION. Since we haven't seen any drastic changes in clothes nor plastic bags, could it be that the Godlewski Sisters are last again??????
Then in second hour we have the 360degree loops (Roadblock) and then a drive north 275 miles to Page, AZ and the raft trip down the Colorado River. With a DETOUR somewhere inbetween?? At a Navajo cliff house?

So we wait and see; but I still think that the first hour (ep 7) will be NON ELIMINATION and the second hour (ep 8) will be ELIMINATION with Bransens and Weavers in danger.
Another thought about Ep 8.
Start day by driving from La Puesta del Sol (pit stop) to Mesa Airport for early morning ROADBLOCK with the Fighter Combat International planes. Teams seem to be here together so probably a bunch up with first come first grab the number and then camp out by the gate. Note that sunrise is at 5:34AM.
Next receive direction to drive north on Route Interstate 17 to Flagstaff and then off into either the Navajo Indian Reservation (Indian Wells) or Hopi Indian Reservation (Second Mesa) for DETOUR task which has not been shown to us (TPTB likes to spring secrets on us). This would be natural spot to break up long 5 hour trip from Phoenix to Page for the rafting trip which may lead to pit stop at Lee's Ferry which has camp grounds and cabins for rent.

I was also trying to piece this together and knew there were one too many roadblocks so I thought the ocean swim must not be one. Arizona has 2 roadblocks so the race car roadblock must belong to Ep. 7. But, being that they are in the morning messes things up (for me anyway) and the only way to make it work may not make sense. If the race cars were late afternoon it would fit much better. Please help yourself at chipping away at this as I'm sure it needs work.

First: in the CBS lengthy promo last night on "Catagory 7" (by the way don't waste your time on this turkey- I only set the VCR to capture commericials for TAR) there is clear shot of at least two power rafts on the Colorado River - in the zoom in we see the Linz Family. No idea who is following. But the Linz must be first since they are pumping their fists in the air and ju mping with joy. One Linz brother is holding a blue route marker.
At the race track we have three cars racing neck and neck. I can't tell who they are but it is strange that there are no shadows although the sky is bright blue. A shot of the two Godlewski sisters and they are looking into sun, so I am of the opinion it is late in the afternoon and perhaps sun is behind a hill, mountain, or building so that the go-carts don't throw shadows.
Also there is a shot on one go-cart going by what looks very much like the back of Mama Paolo (orange short sleeve shirt, frumpy hair, etc.
Now my turn to guess:
Thursday, July 20 (after 36 hour pit stop - camping out on the beach to save TPTB a few more bucks) Teams start to leave between 1AM and 5:30AM but must wait on beach until opening time at Sunrise which occurs at 5:25AM. Clue has one team member swim out to retreave clue from bouy.
DETOUR - KEGS or CANES. Find the clue in one of five empty kegs out of hundreds ("this could take all day") or gather and load a ox cart with sugar cane and take to processing plant. We only see the Linz and Paolos doing this.
Upon completion of Detour, clue says for them to proceed to San Jose Airport and catch a plane to Phoenix, Arizona.
It is possible since tasks always seem to take much shorter time then we think they do, for the teams to catch the 9:00AM American Airlines flight to Phoenix which arrives at 4:50PM. The best flight between the two cities is the Air West flight leaving at 7:15AM but there would not be time to do a Detour and then catch this flight.
Upon arrival at PHX, the teams must find marked GMC SUV's with clue on windshield which directs them to the Bondurant Go-Kart track south of Phoenix Airport in Chandler, AZ. Arrival here and they find the clue for the ROADBLOCK: one member of the team must race a go-kart around the track in x minutes or less. The teams again are pretty much bunched up here. Sunset is not until 7:35PM so they still have light to complete the task. The Godlewski sisters are seen squinting into the setting sun as another sister races her car.
The clue here tells them to drive north to the Ft. McDowell National Reservation and locate La Puesta del Sol which is the pit stop for this leg of the race; the last team to arrive here may be eliminated. Nah. But you do look rediculous with all your clothing piled on. And could it be the sisters once again?
Friday, July 21 - After only a 12 hour pit stop the team get their first clue to proceed back to Mesa Airport and locate the Frontier Combat International site and find their next clue: first come first served. Probably another traditional bunch point as teams wait through the rest of the night for the office to open. When the office opens, teams find the next clue. Clue is a ROADBLOCK: one member of the team must fly a series of loops, spins, acrobatics with stunt flyer. We see the teams (at least three at first): The Bransens, Linz and Paolo families (so were they first at the pit stop yesterday??)
Upon completion they receive clue to proceed north on Interstate 17 through Flagstaff to either the Navajo Indian Reservation at Indian Wells or the Hopi Indian Reservation at Second Mesa. Here they get clue for the DETOUR one of two tasks usually undertaken by Indians. Build a TeePee (oh shades of TAR6) or some other task. This is pure speculation but we need a DETOUR to break up the long 5 hour or more drive from Phoenix to Page for the rafting trip.
Upon competion of the DETOUR, the teams receive instructions to drive north again to Page Arizona where they must find the rafting company (I forget the name we came up with) and proceed down the river a set distance to the reach five beached rowboats. They then must continue on down river to Lee's Ferry the original crossing point on the Colorado River. Here they will find an historical building which is the pit stop for this leg of the race. And the last team to arrive not only may be eliminated, they will and have a guest shot on TES Wednesday morning.
Lack of face time seems to favor the Weavers or Branstens as the team that bites the dust.

I need to post a revision on the time estimate for the Godlewskis.
Sorry for not seeing this sooner. I was watching this Mars/Moon dance going on lately and started thinking about how shadow is cast apon a sphere. That is how light creates a shadow on a sphere. This applies to all spheres: the Moon, golfballs, baseballs, bowling balls, ... and other spherically shaped things.
If the shadow line is straight (like for example it is when we see a half moon) then the light is coming from the direction exactly perpendicular to that line. In this shot the perpendicular to that shadow line is at a 45 degree angle (up from horizontal) That is the solar altitude.
That happened at 9:20 am.
I think going by this Altitude shadow is more accurate that my earlier estimate by the Azimuth because it could be shining from behind.
I still think that the Weavers are earlier.

My point is that I think its mom Weaver in the yellow suit . She might have to start from the beginning if she spun out , but still with Chateau's shadow analysis it looks like the Godlewski sisters might just be last to arrive at the Racecar roadblock .

Ok it looks like a dude Chateau :yaya: . Can you read what the yellow signs in the barrel place say ? they are attached to the wooden beams, I can only make out painted A , B , C etc along the wood structure .

On second look, that can't be a Blue Clue in Papa Paolo's hand. The clues come in yellow envelopes with black stripes and in the case of retreaval in water they are in plastic bags and are usually not opened until back on dry land. It isn't until they are opened that you get to see the blue route marker.

The Bondurant cap on one of the Linz boys at FCI headquarters helps confirm the timelines set out by Gman, Sups and others. I still can't get the FCI pages to load; I had to pull this (http://web.archive.org/web/20031207092601/http://fightercombat.com/Aircraft.htm) out of the Wayback Machine (web archive). FCI was an easy choice for the producers: each plane has a four-camera video system to record the flight for all the TopGun wannabe tourists.

CBS confirms on TES this morning that on tomorrow's TES the latest family to be eliminated on TAR8 will be on TES Wednesday morning. But only ONE family; which means that the first hour ep7 most likely will be NON ELIMINATION .
Went back and rechecked my tape of the CBS promo, and I am 99.99% sure that the person with the peach colored blouse we see in the foreground while a go-cart with a young person with black shorts races by is indeed MA PAOLO - the shirt is not a tee as it has no sleeves, but looks more like peach colored blouse (so not one of the Bransen boys who sometimes do have orange tee shirts on) which is off one shoulder and down on the other and it looks like the hair is piled up (not long) and there is just a quick shot of what looks like a large white ear stud in the left ear (this is similar to what may shots show Ma Paolo had on her ears). So all in all it looks like a Paolo boy racing by his mama.
The timing of this event is puzzling: there are no shadows for the go-carts, or if there are shadows they are directly under the cart which would mean around noon time, but the shadows never seem to change no matter what angle we see the go-carts from. So the sun may be down so low it is blocked by the building on which the GodLew sisters are standing. But if Chateau's times are correct as arouind 11:15AM, where does this event fit in? Could it be on the same day as the airplane gig in Mesa which we are pretty much sure is at sunrise (5:35AM or so)? No because we have one of the Bransen boys at the aeroshow with a Bondurant Black hat on.
So it may be that the Cain or Drain Detour in Costa Rica occurs so early in the day and does not take that long to accomplish that the teams are able to make the early flight to Phoenix. Or, and this is a real big or, did the producers have a charter flight available so that team could fly directly to Phoenix which would take only 3 hours rather than the longer routes through connections in Dallas or Houston a flight which takes about 8 to 9 hours????
Still a lot of questions to work out.

Arizona gets the big spotlight tonight as the featured destination on the CBS reality program The Amazing Race.
The show airs locally on KPHO (Channel 5) at 8 p.m.
The adventure program sends teams globe-trotting around the world, competing against each other in different challenges for a prize. advertisement
In episode seven of the season, the two-hour show airing tonight, the teams will race souped-up karts at The Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving on the Gila River Reservation, make a pit stop at Fort McDowell Adventures in Fountain Hills, fly fighter planes in Mesa, view the Grand Canyon's widest point, visit the Glen Canyon Dam and end up on a houseboat on Lake Powell.
According to CBS, the family edition of the show - in past seasons, teams were made up of couples; this year, it's families of four - is focusing more on U.S. destinations rather than the more exotic locales of years past.
For this season, the show's scouts were looking for places in the country rich in history.

Thanks to the Arizona Republic we can firm up most details. I think that the reason they are racing to bail out the rowboat after the river ride is so that they can row out to the Houseboat on Lake Powell which is the final pitstop.
So after Mesa FCI, the teams will drive north to Flagstaff on Interstate 17, go west on Interstate 40, and then to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon on 64. Still this is quite a long road to hoe without stopping for some kind of DETOUR activity. But perhaps the DETOUR is to do with something on the North Rim.
From here they can drive to Page and undertake the river run with Wilderness River Adventures.
The timing of the Go-Carts is still a puzzlement but it somehow comes before the FCI gig. And if it does happen at noonish, then maybe they do take a charter flight from San Jose to Phoenix.
And the first pit stop is as suggested is La Puesta del Sol in Ft. McDowell National Reservation.

The Linzs should kick butt at paddling, right? If the bottom couple of teams are close at the river rafting it might come down to whoever will have the most problems paddling.

I think GMan is right about Ma Paolo. I was going by memory (posting from another computer). When I reviewed the promo the deltoids went away and she jumped right out. :mad: ETA: It could also be Megan, she has hoop earrings and in one frame of the promo there is a hoop on her left ear.
Nice work Slowhatch in spotting the racing cap at the airport task.
As for the shadows from the karts GMan, you can see them, they are just very short because the combination of rider and kart is very pyramidal. You can see strong shadows cast by the riders' arms and the fold in their clothes. And I withdrew the 11:15 time for the Godlewskis because Sharon's limb shadow (http://astronomy.physics.tamu.edu/Java/Tools/Lunar/HeightsLab/moon.jpglimb) was much larger evidence for an earlier time.
And I have been on a houseboat on Lake Powell ! I expect to hear about a place called "Bullfrog" tonight.

Not bad at all gang; some pretty good work by everyone and we had it almost right on the nailhead - just some things we had no way of knowing, but we have them now on Lake Powell at the end of Friday, July 21. Ten more days to go before they get to Niagara Falls on July 31, so i'm thinking we have some more 36-hour pit stops to sop up some of the time.
Some observations for TAR8 Eps 7 and 8.
We estimated that the Weavers arrived at the beach in Costa Rica at sunset or about 6:00PM and since they left the next morning at 9:00AM we have a strange 15 hour rest period.
On the next leg, Phil for the first time says "after a mandatory rest period of 12 hours" the team (Godlewski Sisters) left at 11:43PM. That puts Chateau's time estimates at the Kart Track pretty much right on they only had a 32 mile drive to La Puesta del Sol pitstop which means they arrived there at 11:43AM (unless they have added some kind of time penalty which we are not aware of) and the second team (Weavers) arrived only 5 minutes later at 11:48AM (at least that is the time announced that they arrived)
Although the Godlewski Sisters had to give up all their money and possessions when the came in last in Panama, they were allowed to keep their sleeping mats/bags since we see them lugging them along together with their other stuff now in plastic bags.
Interesting that the Paolos at the end of Ep7 told the Bransens to not step on the mat but go back and put on everything they could since they would be able to keep whatever they had on when they ended up Non-eliminated. Nice jesture but did it cost them the win?
Noted that in all cases the producers always have ONE MORE THAN NECESSARY things staked out: 6 Tractors and carts (Barrel); 6 swamped rowboats, 6 motor boats on Lake Powell. We now know that the producers do this to keep the last team from knowing that they are indeed last. Keep this in mind during future TARs.
I wonder if The Lodge at Casa Creek Adventure Center in Belize also was the place the first five teams were sequestered??? Could be.
An interesting ep but most of the day during ep8 was spent driving. I estimate a total of 428 miles. That is at least 7 hours not counting pit stops for food, drink, gas and bodily functions! So if the day starts off at 4:30AM when the gates at FCI open, and the first flight takes place at sunrise at 5:35AM that would put them into the houseboat in late afternoon around 4 or 5PM.

Has anyone noticed? The Paolos were the last team to get the clue from the altar boy but the boy still had one clue envolope left after that. Any explanations?

We have learned in the past that the producers always seem to have at least one more of everything (boats, jeeps, stretchers, tractors, and clues) than there are teams currently in the race. This prevents the last place team from knowing whether they are last or not. But if any of the current teams have ever watch any previous TAR they would know that there is always one more than necessary.

The Paolo's sit in a traffic jam and Mama tells them that they should have stopped to call to ask for directions to the Grand Canyon. DJ tells her that she made her point and to be quiet ..mama says " now were lost"

The Weavers talk about how the DHW's & GI Joes /Janes ( Godlewski'sLinzes) tried to trick them by pointing to the boats and making the Weavers think they were doing the compass detour . The Weavers thought the other 2 teams were doing the comapass's . " They think they are so suave but were actually wasting time "
They talk about of the DHW's trying to bail the water out of the canoes and how the DHW's were screaming haha to the Weavers because they finished the boat detour ahead of them .
Weird ..they say that the DHW's haven't got first place yet ?? *(^
The Weaver kids think the Linzes weren't raised properly and that they should respect their elders .." you can mess with us but don't mess with our mom thats just low "
They then make fun of the Linzes and how proud they are to have 100's of pictures of being passed out at bars and brag about being able to pass out standing up . They say the Linz family have no class and they can't relate to them on any aspect
Nothing in common 2
The Linz talk about the crazy Weavers and how they were in a caravan on the way to the dam and that the Weavers passed and thought it was a big deal to be a few seconds ahead of them ..they won't be inviting the Weavers to Cincinnati . They say the Weavers are snotty & stink .

The DHW's are surprised they came in first . They mention that the Linzes motor boat was taking on water costing them the lead .

The boat trip from the dam to the tip of horseshoe bend is 6.5 miles. Boat going say 13 mph would take 1 hour round trip.

Here is the approach to the Pit Stop in Antelope Canyon. At one point in the Weaver SUV they show production provided map that tells the racers to go to the left of a buoy that is situated at the mouth Antelope canyon.
