As long as my state connection doesn't get eliminated during this episode, I'll be fine. People from Connecticut and reality shows don't mix.

The satellite image is just from a different season.

So this would be a shot of teams driving from EMS to Washington Crossing Park.

'The Amazing Race' takes on family ties
By TERRY MORROW
September 21, 2005

"The Amazing Race" is going parental on us.

The latest twist in the Emmy-winning competition will feature families working as teams. During past seasons, "Race" has incorporated teams of two, such as friends, married couples or siblings.

This "family" edition will consist of 10 teams of four people, and they'll dart thousands of miles in a contest for $1 million.

"Race" is returning in a two-hour opener, 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, CBS.

Though it's being billed as families competing on the "ultimate family vacation," the contest will have its less-than-pleasurable moments: bratty and whiny children, parents losing their cool and pressure-filled deadlines to stay in the game.

At each destination, families will vie in physical and mental challenges before proceeding on to the next global mark.

Their challenges include navigating the busy streets of New York City, paddling across the Delaware River and choosing whether to pull an Amish buggy for more than a mile or building a working water mill.

All along the way, we'll see parents yelling at their kids to pull their weight, and kids screaming that their parents aren't up to snuff in the challenges.

Ah, bickering families. That's entertainment

Rough Roads Ahead
Just because there are kids along doesn't mean The Amazing Race: Family Edition is all child's play.
by Lisa Chambers

The Amazing Race: Family Edition
premiere Tuesday, 9/27, 9 PM/ET, CBS

When you hear that this year's edition of The Amazing Race features families, including kids as young as 9, you might expect a kinder, gentler version of the fast-moving trek around the world. A reality show in which tidy nuclear family units perform simpler challenges in fewer exotic locales. But you would be wrong.
"Families come in many forms in 2005, and we've taken full advantage of that" says excecutive producer Bertram van Munster. The eighth running of the race includes 10 teams of four people related by bloodor marriage, but there are only two teams with small kids. The rest are older teens and adults. And the show, which kicks off in New York this week, will go to more than 50 cities (including stops in two countries the race has never gone to before) over 25 days with the families spending more than 600 hours of quality time together.
Some kid-friendly concessions hae been made, however, including a safety advocate to check that the challenges are suitable for children, and van Munster admits there are some dangerous locations they will avoid. One country they plan to take more advantage of? The U.S.A. As one crew member says: "It's Amazing Race Americana." Let the game begin!

Day 1, Noon
Forty people are lining up beneath the Brooklyn Bridge for the start, and the scene looks familiar-the first season kicked off in New York in 2001, but host Phil Keoghan is struck by the differences, "When we shot Amazing Race 1, the Twin Towers were standing right there." He points to the altered skyline. "The world has changed." And so has the race.
For one thing, the casting calls drew 80,000 people, on a par with last season's turnout, but it was difficult for some auditioners to come up with the required four family members. "There was a new level of excitement," Keoghan says. "By doubling the number of people, we've certainly made it feel as challenging as Season 1." Then there are the kids. Some may fear that bringing them along will slow the race down, but van Munster isn't worried. "Kids can do a lot of things we can't," he says. "They can go throught a crowd faster; they can get away with more things."

12:31 PM
They're off! The teams race to a line of black GMC trucks, but, in a break from tradition, the first destination is a sporting goods store in downtown Manhattan to pick up camping gear. What, no mad dash to the nearest airport? "We're definitely going out of the country," van Munster insists. "I personally don't want to be just here, I want to go other places!"
Other basics of the race aren't changing, adds Elise Doganieri series cocreator, co-executive producer and van Munster's wife. "We still have our Detour, Roadblock, Fast Forward, Yield," she says. But the challenges may vary based on how many people are required to participate.

3:45 PM
The Bransen family dash into Washington Crossing Historic Park in Pennsylvania, the point along the Delaware River where George Washington made his famous crossing. For the first physical challenge, teams must row a boat across the fast-flowing river to pick up a colonial American flag on the other side. The Aiello team, Tony and his three sons-in-law arrive but take a few minutes before shoving off. Grumbles a crew member, "George Washington is giving them too much instruction," referring to a history reenactor, dressed like the father of our country, who'll ride with each team. Finally, they're paddling with the unimpressive George W. manning the bow, hollering, "Stroke! Stroke!"
Says van Munster, "We're using historical sites and moments for humor, drama and visually spectacular locations" And hey, who says TV can't be educational? Still, the challenge is not all smooth sailing: Several racers end up in the river pushing their boats along.

6 PM
As the teams set up their tents in a large field outside Phladelphia under threatening skies, van Munster explains the thought process behind the first leg: "Right now we're in the United States, country of plenty, and we give them as little as possible. The have to sleep in a tent and if they have to use the Porta Potti," he points across the field, "they're about 200 yards away in the rain."
The teams are too busy meeting each other-they're not allowed to talk to one another before the start-to worry about the devious Porta Potti placement. "Where are y'all from?" Renee Rogers, racing with her husband and grown children, asks Linda Weaver, a reent widow competing with her three kids. Weaver's daughter Rebecca groans, "Wouldn't this be lame if it's a trip around the U.S.? I'm ready to get out of here!"
Later, a matchmaking Renee tries to introduce her Brock to Lindsay and Lauren Bransen, but he mumbles and walks away. "He's the Cajun snake," predicts one crew member." He's got some Creole he'll pull out when he gets mad." The Aiello team tries to figure but how all four men will sleep in the small tent. "You can spoon each other," Doganieri suggests.

DAY 2, 10 AM
Spoiler alert!
For the first detour, on a scenic farm in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, the teams must choose between hauling an Amish buggy along a 16-mile route or assembling a minibarn with a waterwheel. The Weavers arrive and go for the buggies, but later change their minds, the buggies weight 500 pounds. The Aiellos go for the buggies, "Oh, it's brutal" says Matt.
Van Munster wants to observe the buggy race more closely. "I need to know every detail" he says. "I'm going to follow them into the corn," The Gaghans, who have tow small kids, also choose the buggies. Think they can't hack it? (Hint: Even 9-year-old Carissa runs a seven-minute mile) The kids sing a victory song as they barrel past a stronger team, with mom Tammy effortlessly hauling the buggy. "She's an animal!" van Munster shouts. The teams collect their next clue: Off to the Pit Stop.

3 PM
After the teams finish the leg, Keoghan says he realizes another way this may differ from the past: "I expect it will be the most emotional Pit Stops we've ever had. I know that I'm going to be kicking kids off," Coexecutive producer Hayma "Screech" Washington adds, "You don't have to get out of the country to have a great event. That whole Washington Crossing thing? It was good. You feel like you stepped back in history. And we have a lot more of that coming up... but I can't tell you what." Be sure to bring the kids.

I believe we had sightings in BELIZ which would be the second country not visited by TAR before.

Article mentions 50 cities; now that is a lot to cover in only 25 days.

If shooting start is July 7 in New York (pretty much confirmed) then the final pit stop would be on July 31. Which is the date the Niagara Falls sighting is supposed to take place.  Or was that still in Montreal?

TVGuide (with the help of the producers) has pretty much given out all the details of the first two-hour program with the first PIT STOP some where in Amish Country (Lancaster) PA. This follows the pattern in most TARs that the first two hour program includes a camp out the first night (a la Iceland and Paraquay)

Now we have a quandry to puzzle over.

According to supposedily good evidence TEN teams arrive in Huntsville on two buses from South Carolina late on Sunday night, July 10 or early Monday morning, July 11 after nine hour bus ride from South Carolina and have to wait until the NASA space center (Space Camp) opens early Monday morning, July 11.

But it now looks like the first elimination takes place in PA at the first pit stop (according to TV Guide)on July 8 Which means only nine teams would continue on through Washington DC; North Carolina; and South Carolina on July 9 and 10 (more camping out on the evening of July 9?) Before arriving at Huntsville, Alabama.  Are the rumors true that TAR8 started with the usual 11 teams, but one team was booted off the show in Beliz? I call upon all RFF sleuths to watch the first two shows closely to see if some strange people can be spotted; the producers are very good at digitally removing crew members and such but they do slip up now and then (for example the camera crew filming the winning couple at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin is seen as Jon and Veronica run up)

And if it is true that they go to Huntsville then on to Beliz and Panama, the remaining teams would still have about 8500 milles to travel to make up the total of 11,000. Going all the way to Alaska then back down through Montana, Wyoming, to Toronto and Montreal could eat up this many miles.

GMan, I believe with all my faith that they never do this.  Never.  It's just an inside feeling of trust.  They will blur some private faces and some product logos.  I have found shots of cameramen, I'm not actually counting, but about a dozen times.  (eg. when Kelly & Jon run through airport exit doors to get their Taxi in Phoenix.)  And there are reflections and shadows of production happening several times per leg.  The Berlin shot of production was used because of the importance of what was taking place between J & V. I think the editors invert, crop, omit footage, and overlay Frankenbitten soundtracks but never photo chop info in or out.  I forgot one thing:  footage of B&G's rollover in Africa was concocted by production in the field (the rollover itself was real).

I can imagine that the report of ten teams at the space center comes from the reporter using information that the Race has ten teams in it.  We should check the actual text to see.  Did they really count ten teams?

If so, then it will be fun to do as you say and hunt for vestiges of the 11th team.  I'll be game for that!.

Here it is:

I quote from the WIKIPEDIA item about TAR Trivia:

Trivia

Teams competing on camel carts from a Roadblock in Season 7Each team is accompanied by a cameraman and soundperson throughout the race. When purchasing tickets, teams must also buy them for their camera crew. On the program, teams are only shown requesting two tickets, so that they don't break the fourth wall.
Also, for similar reasons, the show makes the point of not actually showing the crews to the point where crewmen have actually been digitally removed from the picture in post-production. However, during Jonathan's wife-beating incident in Season 6, a cameraman and soundperson were plainly visible filming the team that had checked-in ahead of them. Additionally, Victoria was shown sitting next to the crew tent. Also, Season 7 featured an incident where Brian and Greg's cameraman was shown lying on the ground after suffering minor injuries in an auto accident.

Nothing is impossible with an excellent digital editor working on the post production

About the newspaper story Puddin quoted: has anybody seen anything more about Talladega beyond the Huntsville article? I've searched the Daily Home

without any luck. If there's an employee newsletter for the Speedway, I haven't found it.

Amazing Race 8 Spotted!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We saw the Amazing Race 8 being filmed yesterday at Washington's Crossing PA! The teams had to compete to take "George Washington" across the Delaware river, pick up a US flag on the New Jersey side of the river and return to get their next clue.

It was awesome to watch! A bit slower than what one sees on TV -- the two teams we watched weren't exactly running to and from their cars. It also appeared like they got a bit more direction than one sees on TV in terms of a safety lesson and tips on how to navigate the river and where to go.

It looked like it was the second leg of the race -- at least we heard from some other folks watching that they started with 10 flags. When we got there there were three flags left and we watched two teams complete the task.

The first team we saw looked like a group of siblings in their 20s. They looked pretty athletic and didn't seem to have too much trouble getting across. The second team looked like an older couple with two teenage sons. The mother looked like her knee was hurting and couldn't really run, but they did all right with the paddling.

The only reason we even heard about it was a total fluke as they were of course trying to keep it under wraps. Apparently one of the earlier teams had trouble navigating the river and got stuck on the Washington's Crossing Bridge and they had to close the bridge to get them off and for the camera men to film them. As I was leaving work the traffic reporter was commenting on the fact that the bridge had just reopened after being closed so camera crews could film the Amazing Race, so of course we rushed right over!

The SUVs they were driving appeared to have Michigan plates, so they may have started there. Somehow two camera men managed to squeeze into the backs of them -- not a very comfortable ride cross country! Rumor has it they were in Trenton and NYC earlier in the day. One observer thought he heard a participant exclaim that the next clue was someplace in New England.

Keep an eye out for them coming your way!

Still haven't mastered linking yet  (:;)
Anyway, google the phrase "The only reason we even heard about it was a total fluke" and it will take you to the original. If everything in the first paragraph is accurate and timely, it would seem to be another confirmation of a 07 Jul start date. Add 25 days to that, and if my counting is correct it means a 31 Jul finish date.

Makes sense the lighter weighted families finish the Buggy Ride first ...not much weight to pull , no wonder why the Ailleos , all big men , couldnt complete the task and opted for the barn thingy building .

my thoughts ..

It was awesome to watch! A bit slower than what one sees on TV -- the two teams we watched weren't exactly running to and from their cars. It also appeared like they got a bit more direction than one sees on TV in terms of a safety lesson and tips on how to navigate the river and where to go.
(from the TV guide article )
The Aiello team, Tony and his three sons-in-law arrive but take a few minutes before shoving off. Grumbles a crew member, "George Washington is giving them too much instruction," referring to a history reenactor, dressed like the father of our country, who'll ride with each team. Finally, they're paddling with the unimpressive George W. manning the bow, hollering, "Stroke! Stroke!"

( who fits this description ,the poster doesn't describe males/ females ? The Linz Family ? The Godlewski Family ? 42 yr old sister  could be mistaken for someone young ?)

The second team looked like an older couple with two teenage sons. The mother looked like her knee was hurting and couldn't really run, but they did all right with the paddling.

( the only team with 2 teenage sons ..
The Paolo Family)

The only reason we even heard about it was a total fluke as they were of course trying to keep it under wraps. Apparently one of the earlier teams had trouble navigating the river and got stuck on the Washington's Crossing Bridge and they had to close the bridge to get them off and for the camera men to film them. As I was leaving work the traffic reporter  (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,5916.15.html) was commenting on the fact that the bridge had just reopened after being closed so camera crews could film the Amazing Race, so of course we rushed right over!

The SUVs they were driving appeared to have Michigan plates, so they may have started there. Somehow two camera men managed to squeeze into the backs of them -- not a very comfortable ride cross country! Rumor has it they were in Trenton and NYC earlier in the day. One observer thought he heard a participant exclaim that the next clue was someplace in New England.( naw we know they are headed south )

I'm reposting this here

Posted: Thu Jul 07, 2005 8:29 pm    Post subject: The Amazing Race

------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------

I took the boys up to see where Washington Crossed the Delaware today. I like history, they were just hanging around being bums. Come on, I sad, it will be fun.

They gave me that look - the one that says sarcasticly - Right.
Freedom, liberty etc. Get you butts up and put the bikes in the truck it is a 30 minute ride.

They each brought a walkman so they wouldn’t have to listen to me on the ride. Not a vote of confidence.

I pulled into the half empty lot and was told I had to park in the full side by some twerp with a radio and an earphone. He didn’t look like a PA start park guy to me.

Duh there are no spaces in the half that is totally full. The other half was totally empty. I choose to see the lot as half usable not hafl full but the empty side was for a "caravan" coming the geek with an ear piece said.

Right.

A caravan. We have them all the time here in PA.

So I find another lot down the road and parked, get the bikes out of the truck and bike back to the Welcome Center to get a map. It isn’t a very big place but I wanted to know what to see.

The “Welcome Center” was across from the half empty lot. Ask what is up. Some other geek with a radio and ear piece gives us a lame story about filming an ad for PA & NJ tourism.

Right.

PA and NJ share money on a joint ad for tourism. You must be from Mars ‘cause we locals know PA and NJ compete for tourism $ - they don’t get along well enough to film a joint ad.

I lean my bike against a sign and head in to get a map; some woman comes up bableling and tells me to move my bike, the filming and all. I am losing my Evil Emperor charm and walk in leaving the bike were it was.

I said I was going in to get a map. While I was in there all the staff were talking in hushed tones all excited. Way too busy to hand me a map. No other tourists around. I mumbled some kind of a comment about geeks with earphones.

One of the staff ask if they were rude.

No I said they were just acting like a bunch of Tories. I wondered they were so a twitter they didn't get the insult.

Connor & Blair notice a thing that looks just like an Amazing Race mail box. Connor jokes about opening it and the “commercial” guy gets real nervous and say Connor can’t touch it and that is how they are making the tourism ad interesting.

Right.

We bike a bit but they have part of the path roped off. We go around nice like they ask and come back after a bit, it is a small place and few views of the river outside their ropes.

So I sit outside the ropes at one of the few places we could see the crossing talking to the boys about how the river doesn't look all that wide but it would suck rowing across in a snow storm.

Some other geek comes and tells us to move we are in their camera lines. It is a private event and they have a permit.

You put the ropes up. If we are in the ‘line’ it is ‘cause you put the ropes in the wrong place. Dude we’re here to see the river, we are respecting your ropes but it the history is everyone’s.

More lame cover storyness. Clearly something ain’t like they said.

So we move around again and there are guys out in the river and ambulances all over. I am getting tired of getting moved away from the river as Mr. Ambulance guy come over.

What’s Up with all the equipment I ask.

It is a Drill, said with no sincerity.

Right same lack of sincerity.

I came to see the crossing.

Well you picked a good day stick around and watch TV in September.

So we go back to another rope line, (but in the same 'safe' camera line as all the geeks with earpieces.)

The geeks get all jazzed up, their earpices a buzz “They are coming.”

A bunch of Suburbans come rolling across the bridge.

(Why didn’t George et al use the Bridge?)

Families of 4 (it was the Family edition of Amazing Race – we sent them a tape but didn’t make the cut.) come running out of their Suburbans in the still almost half empty side of the parking lot, check the Connor cant touch it mail box and run to the river where the camera guys tell them to stop and run in in a better formed group on the angle they want. So the families stop and re-run in for the cameras.

(Next time you see the Amazing Race and they are all running in a group – the camera guy stopped them and told them to.)

It was a challenge. They had to row a guy dressed in colonial stuff across the river, grab a flag and row back.

We watched 6 groups do it. Most couldn’t row worth a lick. One almost knocked their George overboard running into a sand bar. The families had to wear life vest. The guys being George Washington had to stand. I hope they had floatation under his heavy colonial costumes but I doubt it, they are extras after all.

I was talking to a guy whose wife was the contact for the state parks; he drove down form Harrisburg to watch. We had a great time watching them try to row straight across with the river current.

I made the boys be careful as we rode our bikes back to the truck. The Suburbans left the half empty side of the parking lot without paying much attention. I guess there was no camera man around.

The SUVs they were driving appeared to have Michigan plates,

My BF works on the PA. Turnpike and says that he sees Michigan plates all the time .
He says normally they are employees of whatever car manufacturer in Michigan that they are working for .
He says that even at the Pocono Raceway here the Nascar drivers almost always have Michigan plates on the cars that they use for getting around here locally , depending on what car manufacturer the drivers have contracts with so that would explain the Michigan plates...easy as that . The SUVs' used  have contracts with TAR production whatever .

There's a spoiler on TWOP, quoting from someone who works for Air Canada on an airline board, that says the TAR8 racers were flying from Toronto to Montreal yesterday. Which would tie in with Niagara Falls very neatly.

And a finish on a Sunday would fit the traditional filming schedule.

The only thing I find odd (given the rumored problems with production) is the length of time this suggests the filming took. 12/13 legs in 24 days (July 7-31)?

But a finish of filming today would give the post-production folks six-seven weeks to work on the editing of the early legs with the production in the can.

If we can believe all the spoilers, then the entire Race - Family Edition - was filmed on the North American mainland.

The Amazing Race: Family Edition Two Hour Premiere Airs September 27th  9/22/05

TEN FAMILIES EMBARK ON THE ULTIMATE FAMILY VACATION WHEN THE EMMY AWARD-WINNING REALITY SERIES "THE AMAZING RACE: FAMILY EDITION" DEBUTS WITH A SPECIAL 2-HOUR BROADCAST, TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 ON THE CBS TELEVISION NETWORK

"Go Mommy Go! Phil Keoghan is the host of the series.

The picturesque New York skyline emerges as water taxis speed the 10 families across the New York Harbor as they ready themselves for a high-energy race through Manhattan.
Fireworks begin immediately as one family bickers about getting lost in the crowded streets while another team complains of a leg injury.
After completing their first task, families travel to Pennsylvania where they must paddle a rowboat across the Delaware River, the same place where George Washington famously crossed the Delaware during the Revolutionary War.
At the detour, families choose between building a miniature working water mill or pulling a traditional Amish buggy along a 1.5-mile course.
One family has a big scare as their buggy nearly runs over a team member, while another team becomes exhausted pushing their buggy through the countryside.

THE AMAZING RACE: FAMILY EDITION is an adventure reality show hosted by Phil Keoghan that pits 10 teams of families against each other in a race around the world for approximately 30 days. At every destination, each family must compete in a series of challenges, some mental and some physical, and only when the tasks have been completed will they learn their next destination. Families who are the farthest behind will gradually be eliminated as the contest progresses, with the first team to arrive at the final destination winning $1 million.

Who's safe based on spoilers ~
The Gaghans  (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,6726.15.html)
The Gaghans, who have tow small kids, also choose the buggies. Think they can't hack it? (Hint: Even 9-year-old Carissa runs a seven-minute mile) The kids sing a victory song as they barrel past a stronger team, with mom Tammy effortlessly hauling the buggy. "She's an animal!" van Munster shouts.

Do the ]Rodgers & the Schroeders (http://www.mlive.com/news/sanews/index.ssf?/base/news-16/1126707600236050.xml&coll=9) become close ?? As in the Race its self or sequester ?

" we became like family over the course of the race "
Any conflict that may have taken place on the road stayed there, at least where one other family is concerned. The Schroeder family of New Orleans picked the Rogers' house as their refuge after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home. Now they are building a new house in Shreveport, and the two families are hosting a fund-raiser party for the Red Cross on Sept. 27 -- the night of the premier, Rogers said

The Bransens (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,6726.15.html)

The Bransen family dash into Washington Crossing Historic Park in Pennsylvania, the point along the Delaware River where George Washington made his famous crossing. For the first physical challenge
The Weavers & Aiellos (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,6726.15.html)
The Weavers arrive and go for the buggies, but later change their minds, the buggies weight 500 pounds. The Aiellos go for the buggies, "Oh, it's brutal" says Matt.

From the descriptions and other pretty reliable sightings in Toronto and Montreal it looks like the four Godlewski Sisters make it that far (a team of four girls was spotted in downtown Toronoto) and either the Weavers or Bransens also make it to Montreal (team with adult and three children spotted but not further identified.)  Also it looks like the Black Family does not make it to the final five (all white familes supposedly spotted.  )

Trouble.. the Paolos?

sounds like the Paolos   (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,6726.30.html)

The second team looked like an older couple with two teenage sons. The mother looked like her knee was hurting and couldn't really run, but they did all right with the paddling.

Shown lost ,,in trouble .. Misdirection?

That leaves the Blacks.
The Black Family has the most " in your face time " .. they are in every commericial or promo that I've seen as well as the most articles ..TV Guide /on-line articles ..ETC ..

thoughts ?

revised..whoohoo pretty proud of myself

The Black Family and the Paolo Family are the last to get to the detour. (http://forums.televisionwithoutpity.com/index.php?showtopic=2666383&st=4275)

However, my coworker just told me he'd watched it last night and he's the one who put it on the free table, and they don't reveal which family is Philiminated, however he says you can tell of which familes it might be.

God Lord, the Linz famly is one of the first out of New York City and the first to the sporting good store (if I remember correctly, which I'm sure I am as it was only an hour ago I watched, but I was getting ready for work and this pretty face doesn't come without some effort so I had one eye on the TV), but somehow they end up being on the absolute last teams to get to Washington Crossing in Delaware, enabling even the most inept of teams at this point (The Weavers, who are lost, and the Schroeder family ((Schroeders represent!), who's blindly following them) to get to the crossing first, finish the roadblock, and move on toward Philadelphia, while they're still stopped on the side of the New Jersey turnpike, asking for directions.

As much as I like the Linz family, and really, they're funny and remind me of my own, and as much as I want them to win, they're going to have to trust more in themselves than second guessing, or they're going to get left behind.

The theme song is still there. Phil does the first voice over, as the teams are brough in by water taxi, on Liberty Island.

But somewhere down the pike, someone else does the voice overs about the tasks, and if it's not Phil, I don't listen.

So maybe the crossing the Delaware River task was just a task and not a roadblock. I assumed it was, simply because it was so much more involved than going to the sports store and buying their sleeping bags and tent and getting to the park and setting them up, which, by the way, is where I turned it off to go to work.

I didn't even get to the Detour, so I have no idea how many people hit the pit stop before the tape runs out, like my friend said... so even though the Linz somehow get really, really behind, there's a lot of episode left to go. So they very well might still end up in first.

---

There's one scene very early in the Linz car where the oldest, Nick (the cute one), turns to his sister and says, with captioning help, "Speak. ..." and he's smiling when he does it and looks goofy, and he finishes, "when spoken to."

And she's all, "Oh, no, we're not going to do that, we're not doing that."

It's so cute. It's how my brothers and I behave.

---

And it wasn't 'til just now that I checked CBS's site and learned that the youngest Weaver is not a girl, it's a boy. I thought they were a "Widow and Daughters", but the captioning said "Widow and Kids", and I wanted to know why it didn't say "Daughters", and well, that's why.

---
Oh, sorry. Best I can remember, Phil does a voice over explaining who's on each team at the beginning, with Team Confessionals. But when he addresses them at the starting line, he just calls them "families". Actually, I think he does not address anyone specifically. Afterward, he doesn't do the voice over for the promo tape, so

The tape ends with Familes Weaver, Gaghan, Aiello and Godlewski all on the road after their roadblock, either hopelessly lost or actually close.

The roadblock is the Buggy/Build it in the TV guide thing. Looks like they basically got the same tape I got.

Cassie and Billy sing "She'll be comin' round the moutain" as they pass the Aiellos, the son-in-law team. It's funny.
I can't tell if Cassie is cute or a brat. She even has a lisp. "Travel to the nexst pitsts sstop."
During the buggy challenge, her brother says to their mother, as she's pushing the buggy, "I'm wicked proud of you mom, I wish I could contribute." And Cassie says in response "Get used to it, dork." Sisterly love or a total brat? I'm not sure. Her mother points out that she can run a 7-minute mile, and how many adults can do that? Well, quite a lot. Motherly love? Or annoying?
To mom's credit, she's pulling the whole way, and they're the first to finish the more physical challenge.

As Linz originally run off to the Buggys, Nick yells out, "Muscle out, baybe. Who-ah." To which Alex replies, "It's all about the bi-s and the tri-s something."
Tommy rides with Meagan and farts in the cab. Judging by her laughing, it's not something she's not used to. "So not cool. You're so gross!"
At the end of the tape, Linz is having trouble pushing their buggy. Nick's legs are cramping, and for some reason they're being filmed from a distance. Why do I bring this up? Because Alex has taken off his shirt, and he has some stompers, from what I can tell from a mile away. Stupid film guy.

Mrs. Weaver, the widow whose husband died after being hit by a car on a NASCAR track, is pulling the buggy as they're coming down a hill. And her daughers aren't ready with the brake, and the buggy runs her right over. Lots of screaming, slow motion, and a comerical. Whole confessional about how it reminded the daughters of their father's death. The mother takes it better than they do, as I expected her to do.

Later, Mrs. Weaver, while looking for the pit stop, "Dear Lord, please help us. The Something Family Farm, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Blue Rock Road, please, in Jesus' name, find it."

Phil does at least do the "site of the pitstop for this leg of the race" speech. Just none of the other voice overs.

Is this the first time the first-leg pitstop has been in the U.S.? It stood out that it said "Pennsylvania" in the sign on the Amazing Bathmat.

The tape stops with them taking a breather and the half-way point of the buggy course. They're the last to do the buggy. Everyone else does the building, and are doing it rather fast. The Black Family and the Paolo Family are the last to get to the detour.
Cassie: Gaghan Family, you're team number one.
Mom: Awwww, wouldn't that be sweet.
Cassie: something unintelligable about sweet dreams as the tape fades out and TAR premires Sept. 27 shows up on screen.

But, Alex had his shirt off.

If we could narrow the farm down im willing to call.  :cheeky: Blue Rock Road
The Something Family Farm (http://www.800padutch.com/mem-farm.shtml)

not these guys.. he's never heard of the show but his daughter has .
He says the Blue Rock Road runs 5 or 7 miles and that its possable that one of the farms could have opened their doors to the teams because thats the sort of place this is ..

more info here (http://www.manortwp.org/general.cfm?generalid=7&townshipid=4)

William Penn had reserved a 3,000 acre site on the eastern bank of the river just north of Turkey Hill for his “New Philadelphia”. The city would have been at the end of the present Blue Rock Road. Blue Rock Road was an ancient Indian trail prior to the arrival of the white settlers. The road today is known as Route 999 as it leaves Millersville, crosses the Little Conestoga and heads to the river just south of Washington Boro. Blue Rock Ferry, which operated around 1730, was located at the end of Blue Rock Road. Blue Rock Road had great significance and was considered the first gateway to the west.

I'm leaning towards the Blacks but if they choose the Buggy they have less weight to pull where as the Paolos just seem out of shape ..the Black kids are quick & athletic ..but their faces as I said are so " in your face " in all promos where as the Paolos are shown lost in the promos as well as bickering which usually mean misdirection.

thoughts ?

*8/ Sorry to say, but I'm not on the best of terms over there. I decided to walk out on my own two feet rather than wait for the boot.

I agree that there's not much info provided by the photo. If your email luck is holding out, you might try the local paper
http://lancasteronline.com/pages/paper/newera/newsroom.php
I couldn't find a permit page at the Lancaster County government website.

There are dozens of buggy-ride vendors and "Amish experience" hotels in the area; without some more info it's going to be hard to narrow it down. Fwiw, the gray buggy Kevin is shown pulling is the most popular type (solid black means Old Order Amish). More info here

Caught one of the TAR8 promos on CBS today and it included one quick shot of one team driving up to what appears to be the George Washington Bridge and a female voice says "what a beautiful bridge".  My question is why in the world are they driving all the way up the crowded West Side Highway to the George Washington Bridge to cross into New Jersey to pick up the New Jersey Turnpike when they are headed for the Washington Crossing State Park in New Jersey?  Their first stop is at the Eastern Mountain Sports store at 591 Broadway in lower Manhattan to pick up tents and sleeping bags. So why go up to the GW Bridge when the quickest way from there to the New Jersey Turnpike is through the Holland Tunnel just a half mile away? From there you pick up I78 over to I95 and then south on the New Jersey Turnpike to Route 1 which takes you to the extended I95 and then to Route 29 which takes you to the Washington Crossing State Park. This could save at least an hour drive time.  Perhaps they get specific instructions on what route they have to follow and needless to say, the George Washington Bridge crossing of the Hudson River to New Jersey is a lot more scenic that the Holland Tunnel (and pretty hard to get helicopter aerial shots of cars going through the Holland Tunnel!) even if it is not the most direct route.

Here is Google Maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=washington+boro,+PA&spn=0.042857,0.065068&t=h&hl=en) to Washington Boro (where the ferry was in the 1700‘s) which is the western end of (Old) Blue Rock Road.
And that’s the limit of resolution they've got.
Here is GlobeXplorer’s image of the same spot (http://imageatlas.globexplorer.com/ImageAtlas/view.do?group=ImageAtlas&lat=39.994&lon=-76.460&zoom_level=8).
Now! we’ve got resolution!  Zoom in a few steps and move along the road to the east.

I found a farm on Blue Rock Road from the yellow pages.

Meadow Lane Dairy
3392 Blue Rock Rd
Lancaster PA
17603-9499
717-871-9653

Here is that place (http://imageatlas.globexplorer.com/ImageAtlas/view.do?group=ImageAtlas&lat=40.008&lon=-76.400&zoom_level=9).

Now we will have to wait to see if this is it.  There are about fifty farms along Blue Rock Road.

Here is Globexplorer's view of the Starting Line (http://imageatlas.globexplorer.com/ImageAtlas/view.do?group=ImageAtlas&lat=40.7043&lon=-73.992&zoom_level=13).

Just saw the commercial with the Godlewskis talking about the bridge. I think G-Man has the best explanation: they wouldn't waste money on aerial shots and leave things to chance. In fact, to avoid puzzled New Yorkers  *(^, I wouldn't be surprised if we hear a voiceover of a racer reading the clue card: "You must use the GW bridge"...

Star-Ledger Race Preview (http://www.nj.com/search/index.ssf?/base/columns-0/1127710201243320.xml?starledger?colatv&coll=1)

Quote
The two-hour family edition premiere (tomorrow at 9 p.m., Ch. 2) starts in Manhattan and then stays in Manhattan, then stays in Manhattan again, then features a jaunt down the Jersey Turnpike (where the smarter teams stop for directions at the Vince Lombardi service area), then stops in Philly before a jaunt through Pennsylvania Dutch country.

This may explain the use of GW bridge to get out of Manhattan.

Okay here it is:

Quote
they have to buy hot dogs on 91st & Lex

And Schroeder completely missed this:

Quote
But right now, it's disconcerting that the highlight of the premiere was the sight of two former contestants handing out clues at the hot dog stand and looking increasingly dismayed -- either because they think the new format is odd or, more likely, because only one person recognized them.

Who are they?  Taking guess now:    Kevin & Drew

Here's the information:

1. The race does leave North America and goes to Europe and South America.
2. In Amsterdam, one of the teams has a bad bicycle accident. "Bad" was the adjective that was told to me an hour ago and I didn't ask anything further. The desciption seems to sound like the bicycle accident involved the Linz team in some way, but my source isn't 100% sure which team.

I don't think that fits into the 11,000 miles.  I haven't checked.  But that's just because it's so wacked.

So, Puddin!  make your guess who sells the hotdogs at 91st & Lex (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=40.754669,-73.981762&spn=0.112169,0.120678&saddr=591+Broadway+New+York,+NY&daddr=E+91st+St+%26+Lexington+Ave,+New+York,+NY+10128&hl=en)

found one ( congrats Chateau for figuring out the link code )

Ellen Gray | A 'Race' to our city (http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/entertainment/television/12743244.htm)

THE AMAZING RACE: FAMILY EDITION. 9 p.m.

tomorrow, Channel 3.

PERHAPS the most amazing thing about tomorrow's two-hour premiere of CBS' "The Amazing Race: Family Edition" is what you won't see:

Contestants scrambling to find the nearest airport.

In a twist that makes the show, which just won its third Emmy, look like the "see America first" edition, "Race" instead has its first-ever four-member family teams navigating the streets of Manhattan and heading down the Jersey Turnpike toward Philadelphia.

And then pitching their tents on Fairmount Park's Belmont Plateau.

Host Phil Keoghan sounded, well, amazed when I suggested Friday that Philadelphians might regard this as the show's kids-don't-try-this-at-home moment, then assured me that "everything that takes place on the race is tested" beforehand.

He also suggested the jet-free start was more a matter of changing things up than pampering the younger contestants (the youngest is 8), noting that his own 9-year-old daughter, who flew for the first time at the age of 2 weeks, is "the toughest traveler I know."( awww)

And speaking of tough girls, "one of the most satisfying things for me was to see that at a certain point in the series a 9-year-old girl goes screaming by a 40-year-old man with a rather big ego," Keoghan said.( the Gaghans pass the Aiellos in the Buggy Roadblock)

Still, "having kids there definitely affected how we laid out the race," he said, noting that they were, for one thing, restricted to shooting during the summer, so that the younger contestants wouldn't miss school.

"We don't want to be responsible for the dumbing-down of American society," he joked.

Two of the show's families turn out to hail from Louisiana, and "Race" will acknowledge Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in much the way it previously mentioned the tsunami relief efforts, Keoghan said.

As for the families themselves, "I've been in contact with them and I do know [that they're OK] and that they've actually been looking after each other," he said

It's minmum 12 min (http://maps.google.com/maps?spn=0.108609,0.191291&saddr=E+91st+St+%26+Lexington+Ave,+New+York,+NY+10012&daddr=4211+Broadway,+New+York,+NY+10033&hl=en) up to the GW bridge area.  I had to stick in an address to get Google to make the route.  The teams would not need to exit the parkway to city streets.  They could swing right onto the GW.

The minimum of 12 minutes from 591 Broadway to the GW bridge is Mapquest time. At noon on a Thursday (July 7) it probab ly would take 12 minutes just to get to the West Side Highway.  But it now looks like they may have to go from lower Broadway up to Lexington and 91st Street (thats Yorktown and Little Germany) Who are the New York teams that could be the hotdog vendors? Didn't we have a Pizza Parlor brothers team?  From there it would make more sense to go across the GW bridge rather than back down to either the Lincoln or Holland Tunnel.

On the Early Show , mainly Phils focus was on the Schroeders and their house in NO.
Then some video of their house .
Harry asked who we should watch out for ..
He talked about the Gaghans , Godlewski sisters & the Aiello's .
They showed the Gaghans passing the Aiello's & the kids cheering mom on .( cute )
Nothing spoilerish ..

This should be fun tonight seeing the ten teams in large GMC SUV's trying to maneuver through the streets of a crowded downtown New York City during the middle of the day July 7 (Thursday)!! Gridlock is normal at this time of day especially in the crowded narrow streets of SoHo.  It should be real fun to see the Weavers from Ormund Beach, Florida, the Godlewskis from Des Plains, Illinois and the Rogers from Shreveport, Lousianna seeing what is like to drive from Brooklyn across the Brooklyn Bridge across lower Manhattan to the sporting goods store at 591 Broadway. Then across Houston street to First Avenue (one way north) to 96th Street and then across to Lexington and 91st Street (Nathan's Famous Hot Dog stand?) with the two Pizza Brothers (?). Then back to 96th street, across town to the West Side Highway and then north to the GW Bridge.  By the time they fight through twelve lanes of heavy truck traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike and then make their way to the Washington Crossing State Park all the teams must be exhausted. But according to TV Guide all the teams make it here by 3:45PM. Not bad times at all.

according to the Star Ledger http://www.nj.com/search/index.ssf?/base/columns-0/1127710201243320.xml?starledger?colatv&coll=1

Quote
Maybe in a few weeks, when the numbers have dwindled from 44 to, say, 28, and the contestants have gone somewhere that requires a passport, it'll be easier to tell whether the family idea should be repeated in the future.

44 people = 11 teams. Hmm!  *(^

And it's a good thing they did not remember "Rohrer" was the name because "Rohrer Family Farm"  Googles to a different place on the other side of Lancaster.  We would have confidently arrived at the wrong place.  And you what happens to teams who do that.

Lancaster County farm plays host to TV’s ‘Amazing Race’
By Jane Holahan
Lancaster New Era

Published: Sep 28, 2005 1:22 PM EST
LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - The reality show “The Amazing Race: Family Edition” sneaked into Lancaster County this summer, filming an episode that aired on the season premiere of the show Tuesday night on CBS.
The farm of P. Kenneth Rohrer, 3407 Blue Rock Road, became the final destination of the first installment for the 10 families competing in the race.

In the next 10 weeks, they will be traveling all over the world and the winning family will take home $1 million.

“They filmed here in July,” Rohrer says. “I can’t really say anything else. I signed an agreement that said we weren’t allowed to talk about it for three years. I’m not sure why it’s so long. We assumed that when it came on the air, it wouldn’t matter, but that’s the agreement.”

“They were real quiet when they were here,” says neighbor Glenn Rohrer, who’s not related to Rohrer.

Thanks for the link, Slowhatch.  I recall seeing those for the last couple of seasons.

The chart highlights the dramatic change in placings from the completion of the detour to the pit stop.  The trip wasn't that far.  Some of the teams will need to greatly improve their navigational skills if they want to continue in the race.

Agree that the Rogers have been MIA (missing in action) but they haven't been given enough face time yet to be eliminated next. So if patterns follow it looks bad for the Bransens and Gaghan.  The Paolos will stick around for awhile; TAR always needs the fighting team (a la Jon and Victoria, et al) to spice things up and to have a team the audience loves to hate.

According to the local article (http://local.lancasteronline.com/4/17335), there a lots of Rohrers and Brubakers wandering around, but I think you've got it with the two blue silos! :t-up:

But the silos were at Rohrer's Family Farm.

It turns out that the Brubaker Farm at
493 Musser Road
Mount Joy, PA 17552

Is the same general 40 acres as
1175 Flory Road
Mount Joy, PA 17552

The TAR premiere pulled in so-so ratings. In the first hour, viewers preferred watching Geena Davis to the Paolos (understandable), and in the second hour they preferred watching William Shatner (not understandable).CBS did OK with the age demographics, though. Thanks Slowhatch. I just found those numbers, and posted them in what I thought was the ratings thread (Official Amazing Race Numbers)
