To be fair, the succession plan was apparently in place for a long time; Sumner Redstone's failing mental abilities (possibly Alzheimer's) at age 92 was the trigger; the CEO of Viacom was also promoted to executive chairman a few days later. Redstone is now Chairman Emeritus of both companies.
