Title: Phil Rides Across America!
Post by: georgiapeach on March 25, 2009, 11:00:01 AM
Thought we could keep up with him here along the way?

WHEN: March 28, 2009> May 8 (??9), 2009

WHY:

•   For a great cause - Bike MS

• To promote riding - because riding makes sense/cents: in these times riding has never been a better option

• To share the Ultimate Food - NOW One Square Meal: a new perfectly balanced meal for any adventure, including riding across America!

Phil Keoghan's "Ride Across America Presented by GNC" will kick off on March 28 in Los Angeles and end on May 9 in New York City. Along the way, he'll attend meet and greets with supporters at local GNC stores, visit CBS affiliates, attend open-casting calls for the next installment of THE AMAZING RACE, sign copies of his best-selling book No Opportunity Wasted, and ride alongside ex-racers and fans of THE AMAZING RACE.

Phil is riding to raise awareness and funds for the US National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The ride also coincides with the launch of NOW One Square Meal into GNC stores across America.

"I fly over 400,000 miles a year and I figured it was time to stretch my legs. I love to ride so I thought I'd see what this great country looks like up close instead of taking a bird's eye view at 30,000 feet," said Keoghan. "In this economic climate, bike riding makes a lot of sense -
it's good for your waistline and easy on your wallet."

Good Deeds
Phil Keoghan to Take His Own Amazing Race

By Cynthia Wang

Originally posted Wednesday March 25, 2009 08:00 AM EDT

He's no stranger to observing overwhelming challenges, but by his own estimation, "This is the most daunting physical thing I have ever attempted," Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan tells PEOPLE about his own amazing race – a 40-day, 39-city cycling tour from Los Angeles to New York.

Starting this Saturday, Keoghan, 41, plans to average 100 miles a day in pedal power. "Riding a bicycle is about getting back to basics," he says. "It's good for the waistline and it's good for the wallet, is what I'm saying."

But Keoghan isn't undertaking the road trip strictly for fitness. His adventure, sponsored by the health-store chain GNC, will take him to GNC outlets, to casting calls for The Amazing Race, to signings of his book No Opportunity Wasted, and to promotions of his favorite portable food NOW One Square Meals. The journey will also help him raise money and awareness for Bike MS.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society "is sponsoring nine of the major rides I am doing," he says. "I have been involved with the MS chapter here in California, and I have participated in their rides over the last four years."

Keoghan hopes he is not alone on the road. He is encouraging fans and well-wishers to check out his Twitter updates – or, better yet, turn out in person to see him, or even sign up to ride with him.

Also on view will be former Amazing Race contestants and even Keoghan's dad, John. "It's an absolute, monumental effort," says Keoghan, "but I think a tremendous amount of good is going to come out of it."

I am just getting the first reports in from the kick off this morning!! :hearts:

The send off was a special moment... A family affair.

Phil was there with his wife and daughter. His dad, John, will be driving the van across America, so this is another adventure for them to share. His wife was going to ride the first bit as well.

Elise was there with her baby daughter.

TAR cameramen were on hand to document this for posterity.

Our own Mark (Season 13) was there, as were Kynt and Vyxsin. This ride for MS has a personal meaning for Kynt, as his own Dad has MS and new research has provided new therapies that have significantly improved his Dad's quality of life.

Both of Kynt's parents were there with K/V to send off Phil in style, as well as masses of media.

I hope to have some pictures to share with you all later tonight, but in the meantime have a look HERE (http://wireimage.com/ItemListings.aspx?igi=365975&nbc1=1) for the first ones out!!

Phil Keoghan discussing biking across America
'The Amazing Race' host explains why he's biking 3700 miles in 40 days and why 'The Amazing Race' isn't in HD
By: Daniel Fienberg
Saturday, Mar 28, 2009
As reality TV hosts go, Phil Keoghan has always made the most with the least. He doesn't mug like Ryan Seacrest or impose himself on the game like Jeff Probst and he never broadly announces that the show is all about him, like Tyra Banks does. Keoghan's best "Amazing Race" moments are usually a raised eyebrow or a concerned episode-closing inquiry.

Keoghan's ready to move into the spotlight as he bikes across America, hoping to cover more than 3500 miles in 40 days. Along the way, he'll stop in 39 cities. He'll be promoting "The Amazing Race," signing copies of his book "No Opportunity Wasted," visiting CBS affiliates, plugging his NOW One Square Meal Bar at GNC stores and building awarness for Bike MS and the MS movement, participating in rallies for the National MS Society.

"The theme to this whole ride is really, the umbrella if you like, is really No Opportunity Wasted and everything that's happening really comes under this personal philosophy of mine, which is that when you pool resources and you look at making a change in the world, it's about using ingenuity and being resourceful," Keoghan told reporters on a conference call earlier this week. "One of my favorite quotes is from Sir Ernest Rutherford, who said, 'We didn't have money, so we had to think.'"

The journey came out of a conversation between Keoghan and a CBS publicist about ways to promote the new "Amazing Race" season, which many critics (including the one writing this article) have called a major comeback for the Emmy-winning series. In the course of their discussion, it became clear that this trip could be both promotional and altruistic.

"It has been an absolute adventure just putting this thing together," Keoghan said. "We haven't even left yet and all these people have come on and said, 'Yes, we will help you. We love this cause. We love what you're trying to do.' That's really how it evolved."

Keoghan and his wife have sponsored an MS Society-affiliated cycling team and participated in MS-affiliated cycling events for several years, so it was easy for him to target a cause.

"It seems like everybody you speak to know somebody who's connected with the disease in some way and it's always surprising to me just how many people are affected by it and it's not just the people who have MS," he says. "It's the people who live with others who have MS. We decided to get involved and the more I got involved with the MS Society, the more I warmed to their message and their spirit and the stories... I was so charged by their energy."

Keoghan will be joined by his father, a moto-rider, a veteran "Amazing Race" cameraman, an editor and at least one CBS publicist, allowing him to to update fans on his progress via video, a daily blog and a photo gallery at PhilRidesAcrossAmerica.com website. The trip begins on Saturday (March 28) and Keoghan is hoping to end in New York City in 40 days.

"To me, one of the most basic solutions to our situation right now is getting on a bicycle," Keoghan says. "It's makes for your wallet. It makes sense for your waistline. Forty percent of trips are under two miles in a vehicle. We have a tremendous obesity problem in this country. Everybody has gotten into this mindset of excess, of looking at all of the things we want -- 'I want this,' 'I want that' -- and we really need to get back to the needs, and essential needs."

And speaking of essential needs, since Keoghan was chatting with the press, my essential need was asking why he thinks "The Amazing Race" has been so good this season.

"The network made a conscious effort to really freshen things up, but in terms of the style of the show and the look of the show," he says. "They freshened up the music. They freshened up the graphics... They just sort of spring cleaned the show, if you like. And in terms of the cutting style, there's less sort-of process of in an airport... After a while, airports start to look like airports and if the background is an airport in Istanbul, it can look like the background of an airport in Houston. I think getting away from a little of that process in airports and getting out into the open and letting the show breathing a little bit more and then increasing the pace as the pace of the race increases has really given the show a fresh look."

Given that fresh look, why hasn't "The Amazing Race" followed the industry trend and moved into high definition?

"I think it should be in hi-def," Keoghan agrees. "The complication, or one of the challenges that we have is that we do utilize a lot of foreign crews when we're traveling. It's very difficult to just turn up in Siberia and say, 'Oh, let's call the local guy with the HD camera and he can come down and supplement our shooting.' It's a little bit more complicated than, say, facilitating an HD shoot on 'Survivor,' where you can fly all of the equipment into one spot and you've got all your technical support there, you've got a guy who can sit down every night and look after the equipment. We're moving at breakneck speed, 28 days, flying hundreds-of-thousands of miles, or at least anywhere from 75,000 miles in a given race, so we just don't have the same luxury of being an 'Idol' or 'Survivor,' where everything is brought to one place, it's 69 degrees, where the air-conditioning is perfect. We're out sweating in Botswana or anywhere else and that's been a huge part of the challenge. But, I absolutely agree with you. I'd love to see the show in HD. I don't think there's a show on TV that lends itself more to HD."

^^Funny!!

Here is some of what poor Phil went thru training for this::

CTS Athlete Phil Keoghan Rides Across America

Phil Keoghan Rides Across America

Phil Keoghan, host of The Amazing Race, has been preparing for months to complete his Ride Across America, an event that he has designed to raise as much as 1 million dollars or more for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. A great deal of time, energy and work has been put into organizing this event, but one of the key factors to making this a success is the hours Phil has spent on the bike. Though he had been training for quite some time, as the event neared Phil began to feel he’d benefit from guidance and he looked to Carmichael Training Systems for help. There is no denying that Phil was in good shape before he turned to CTS, but he fell into a very routine that’s common for many athletes: he was not allowing nearly enough time for recovery. His mileage and saddle time each week were fairly significant, but his recovery was minimal if not non-existent because days off of the bike were filled with taking care of life and work responsibilities.
This is where I came in. After spending some time on the phone and communicating through e-mail, we scheduled several days in a row off of the bike to allow for recovery before Phil began a solid block of training. Since this was something different for him, Phil’s told me, “I am nervous, but I am trying to trust you.” As the weeks have gone by I have continually put Phil to the test with longer rides as well as some intensity; but because I’ve also included adequate time for recovery he has bounced back each week feeling stronger. The one thing that we did not change was his weekly track session because it was something that he did not want to give up and it was something that he really enjoyed. After all, what fun is riding if you aren’t having fun!

Recently Phil joined Chris Carmichael and me in Colorado Springs and performed a lactate threshold and VO2 max test. The test ended up going very well and in the data recall we confirmed that his numbers for power at threshold were very similar to what we were already using in his training. We had used the CTS Field Test to establish his training intensities, and some athletes gain confidence by seeing that their lab-tested numbers are consistent with their field test results. During the VO2 portion of the test I learned one thing about Phil that I know will help him get through his ride across America: his undeniable ability to suffer. In this portion of the test he continued to push even after his numbers began to decline, far longer than we typically see people go. I was very impressed with this mental strength and it explains a lot about many of the other events Phil has completed, whether it was hitting a golf ball across Scotland or skiing behind a reindeer (I know it sounds crazy!), or simply the way that he lives his life.

This Saturday, March 28th Phil will push off on his 42-day journey. He’ll leave from Los Angeles, California and will finish in New York, NY on May 7th. Along the way riders are more than welcome to join along and ride with Phil to help him pass the miles. I am intending on tagging along somewhere in Nebraska and hope to see some of you out there as well! To track Phil’s progress and find out more information about MS you can go to www.philridesacrossamerica.com.

Day 9, Phil is tired and leaves Arizona and heads into Cortez, CO. It seemed Phil was in Colorado for a month.

Day 10, Phil hits the 1,000 mile mark, heads to Pagosa Springs, CO and goes live on the Bonnie Hunt Show.

More to come. Probably tomorrow.

Day 12: Phil goes to Johnny Fairplay, CO.

Day 13: Phil arrives in the Mile High City, Denver, CO. Phil gets a nice sendoff from Fairplay. Phil also confirms the finale date of TAR. Seriously, Phil crashes into a car, but is ok.

Day 14: Rest day. Phil says goodbye to Ben Cornell who has ridden with Phil throughout the first two weeks of the Ride Across America.

Day 15: Phil heads to Fort Morgan, CO. Margie & Luke are there to see Phil off.

More videos soon.

The Ride of His Life
by Rochell D. Thomas  April 27, 2009 05:08 PM EST

Holdrege, Nebraska: It’s early-bird dinnertime, yet Phil Keoghan is already bone-tired. And with good reason. The 41-year-old New Zealand native spent the last three hours cycling 75 miles through the Great Plains, and that was a short ride. While we’ve been watching the Amazing Racers make the 14th loop around the world, host Keoghan has been cycling across America to raise money for the National MS Society, a non-profit organization that funds research and helps people who suffer from multiple sclerosis. Next week he expects to cross the finish line in New York City, but in the last month he has braved 40-mile-an-hour winds, rain, snow and errant drivers while crossing 15 states and pedaling more than 3,000 miles. “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” he says, sleep creeping into his voice. Here he talks to us about his ride and the brutal week he spent crossing through Colorado and into Nebraska.

How are you doing?
I’m doing good. Today we entered Nebraska with south-easternly winds gusting at what must have been about 30 knots. The just really wears you out.

How far did you ride today?
It was down as a 75 mile ride but it felt a lot longer. We’ve had longer rides. I did 13 100-mile rides back to back without break.

What do your legs feel like right now?
Right now I’m wearing this devise, The NormaTec MVP. They’re like space legs. It’s like somebody’s rubbing my legs. It has five chambers and they squeeze and pulse, basically speeding up the process of getting the lactic acid out of your legs. I’ve been using it for about 30 to 45 minutes at the end of each day. It’s like a massage. I actually look forward to it.

So it makes sure you don’t get cramps?
It helps. But it’s really a combination of a lot of different things. A huge part of it, to be honest with you is the nutrition. Just having the right balance of food in my body. It’s one thing to be fit. But it’s kind of like having a really nice car. If somebody gives you a nice Porche but you put crappy fuel in the car or put bad tires on it and ask it to perform it’s only as good as the weakest link. So the nutrition has been hugely important.

How many calories are you eating per day
I’m nowhere near Michael Phelps who was eating like 12,000 calories a day. But I’m close to it. I’m on about a 5500-calorie-a-day diet now. The average person needs about 2000 calories a day.

You’ve cycled over 1300 miles so far. Day after day. How can you even sit down right now?
One of my seatbones on my butt is just raw from riding because I’ve done 17 centuries [100-mile rides] in the last 18 days. But I haven’t gotten the after-the-childbirth donut or anything like that either. I’m good. I’m using Belgium Butter [crθme] and I just got some Second Skin. I’m going to try it tomorrow. It basically puts a protective layer over your skin. But my butt is definitely saying, “You’ve ridden too much in a row.”

What are your road essentials besides Beligium Butter, NOW bars and the Specialized bike?
Other essentials: Proper clothing. I don’t know if you saw the blog for Day 15 when we got caught in the storm. The air temperature dropped ridiculously low. Oh my God, it was horrendous. So you definitely have to have the right thermal gear. The challenging part is wearing something warm that you don’t overheat in. The other day I got caught in the storm. I came in and I was blue.

You’ve probably had a few flats by now. Are you getting better at changing them?
I’ve had ten flats so far. When I was in Utah, I kept getting flats and this guy Dave who ended up riding with me for two days, said “Phil you’ve got to get the Specialized Armadillo tires.” They’re a lot heavier but they can roll over absolutely anything. So I’m now riding on them. Since I’ve put those on I haven’t had any flats.

We’ve got a photo of your holding up one of your flight tires.
What’s funny is that in that shot [the photographer] said to me ‘Man you guys are getting really good at changing the tires.” And I looked down and my buddy Ben was changing my tire. Again. I said “I’m not sure if we’ve gotten better or if Ben, who’s always changing my tires, has gotten better.” He really looked after me when he was on the ride and I really miss him.

I’ve been watching you online and you seem to be really flying
I hit 56 miles an hour the other day on a flat [road]. I’ve never gone that fast downhill! They’d shut down the entire highway for us and we were screaming along the road.

That’s like Lance Armstrong fast.
I had a Lance Armstrong blowing wind [pushing me forward]. We did 100 miles in three hours and 53 minutes. The rest of the time I’m not that quick.

I’m told you did a 10,000 foot climb. What was that day like?
That day was just magical. When we went up over Wolf Creek pass. There were about 50 people from the local cycling club who rode up with us, including one guy who’d had a double hip replacement. It’s quite a climb. You end up at 10, 881 feet. It’s the Continental Divide. It probably took two and a half hours to get to the top. We took our time. The air is very, very thin. So it’s hard to breathe. And these guys from the Wolf Creek cycling club are incredibly tough. They live up there in that altitude. So I was riding with these very, very good riders. There was such a comraderie.

High altitude. The pressure of keeping up… I’m assuming this is where all that training kicks in.
I’ve been training very hard for this ride and I’m pacing myself. It was definitely tough. But I think cyclists, in general, are tough athletes. You have to be. The first day, when I left L.A., I was on a bike for 11 and a half hours. You’ve got to be hard. It’s not a wimpy sport.

What’d you do at the top?
As we got close to the top of the pass I heard Amazing Race music and everybody was waiting up there with drinks and food and everything. There was even an Amazing Race map right there at the top. I felt like I was in the middle of the Race. It was a huge sense of achievement. And the incredible response we got from people… I got very caught up in the whole emotion of it all.

It shows on your face in the photos. Speaking of your face, you’re getting so much sun you’re going to look like you’re a whole different ethnicity by the time this is over.
I’ve already got a bit of that look going on. I remember once when I went skiing for a day, I got really tan in the face. I was with this girl. I went and had a shower and when I came back out she saw me naked and started laughing because my body was all white but my face was brown as a berry. And I think that’s how I’m going to end up.

What’s on your arm? It’s either the largest iPod ever or—
That’s a walkie-talkie. Motorola has been helping us with tracking. That’s how I keep in contact with the support vehicle. I just wear it on my arm because it’s the easiest way to talk to them while riding.

Do you listen to music while riding?
No, it’s too dangerous. Too dangerous. I need so much focus. I had one day out of Fairplay, Colorado and the wind was blowing so hard that my weight was the only thing that kept my bike on the road. My weight was the only thing that kept my bike up! The other two cyclists that were with me kept getting blown off the road. My friend Ben, who is one of the toughest guys I know, had to give up early. That was also the day where I ran into a car. It was actually the scariest part of the ride so far. A freaky day—one of those where I didn’t speak much I just grit my teeth, knuckled down and rode. I’ve had a few of those days where it’s been incredibly demanding on me physically. It’s hard to get across to everybody. I’ve never ridden this much in my life. It’s hard. It definitely wears you out.

How many days has your wife been able to ride with you?
She ended up riding about four or five hundred miles with me. And I had my friend Ben with me for 1300 miles. And his wife Julie also rode about four or five hundred miles.

How important is it to you to have company on the road?

Very important. Thankfully I have the radio coverage and motorbikers with me all the time. And my dad, who’s driving the truck with the airstream trailer, will occasionally break into song over the radio.

Those Airstreams are nice.
Oh it has been amazing. When the storms get to rough and we have to stop. We can wait inside. Let me tell you I’m like a kid in a candy store with this. It’s got a double bed up front, a kitchen with a fridge and stove. A couple of single beds in the back. And a table. And lots of storage areas and a shower.

And most importantly, a restroom.
Yes. [laughs] But we haven’t actually been using that because we’ve been able to stop. For the most part we just pee on the road. I hope that’s legal because there’s something wonderful about peeing across the country. You’re able to stop and look at things even slower than bike riding. But with the strong winds you have to be very careful where you point.

True that. In your video blogs, you’re always shown leaving town with a whole bunch of cyclists. But then when you’re on the open road you’re usually only with one or two. What happens to those other people? Do they just drop out as they get tired?
It’s a little bit of a concern for me. I’ve been training for this for a very long time and there are days where we’re averaging over 20 miles an hour. Most avid cyclists cruise more at a 14 mile per hour average speed. And the difference between 14 and 20 is quite substantial. Especially over six hours. But I don’t ever want to discourage people from riding with me so what I do is I soft pedal for a few miles out of town. Then I stop and ask who wants to go on. By then I get a sense of who can ride. And I say to people “I don’t want to be rude but I’ve got to pick up the pace. I’ve got a schedule.” Because the longer I’m on the bike the less time I have at the end of the day to actually recover off the bike. So it’s more painful to ride slower. It takes more out of me over the days

I can imagine. What do you dream of when you sleep after a day of riding?
I sleep very heavy. I sleep extremely heavily and I’d be lying to you if I said I wasn’t pedaling in my dreams. The road is moving and the trees are waving and the birds are twittering and the wind is blowing. It’s all there.

I don't mean it the same way Puddin would  :-[,  but Phil is a stud.

Just pedaling 100+ miles a day, every day, is a phenomenal achievement.  But when you add in all of the appearances that he does at the beginning and at the end of each day, I don't know how he does it.

Here's to Phil   :jam:

Join Phil's Amazing Race

By Scott Tady, Times Entertainment Editor

ROBINSON TWP. — Pedal along with Phil Keoghan on Saturday, as the host of CBS’s “The Amazing Race” rides through Robinson Township as part of his coast-to-coast bicycle trip for multiple sclerosis.

Keoghan will appear at the GNC store, across from Ikea at Robinson Town Centre, for a 9 a.m. pre-ride rally that includes a flag presentation by the U.S. Marine Corps and the singing of the national anthem by Moon Township teen Sarah Marince.

Check-in time is 8 a.m. for bicyclists who have pre-registered at philridesacrossamerica.com for the chance to ride along with Koeghan on an 11-mile roundtrip journey down Montour Run Road in Moon to Forest Grove Elementary School in Robinson. Bicyclists, who must be at least 12 years old, will return on the Montour Trail, while Keoghan pedals on toward Washington D.C.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Keoghan was steering his Specialized-brand bike toward Salt Fork State Park near Cambridge, Ohio.

He’s set to arrive in downtown Pittsburgh for a noon appearance Friday at GNC’s flagship store on Wood Street. He also will briefly appear at an open casting call for the Emmy-winning “Amazing Race,” set from 1 to 4 p.m. Friday at the Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Washington County. Keoghan also will throw out the first pitch at Friday night’s Pittsburgh Pirates game, according to Kim Trohaugh, director of special events for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Allegheny District chapter.

Keoghan’s 3,500-mile, 40-day bike ride began March 28 in Los Angeles. The New Zealand native has averaged 100 miles a day in his quest to reach the finish line in New York.

Keoghan’s ride is raising awareness for multiple sclerosis (M.S.), a condition affecting the central nervous system. One of his family members is living with the disease, Trohaugh said.

The 41-year-old Keoghan regularly participates in “Bike M.S.” events in Los Angeles, and hopes to draw attention to similar fundraising events, such as the Allegheny M.S. chapter’s “Escape to the Lake” June 6-7, for which bicycling enthusiasts will ride from Moraine State Park to Lake Erie. Information is at bikems.org.

We last left off on Day 19 and you can click here (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,18596.msg390943.html#msg390943) to remind yourself of the videos. Since CBS is not going to post Days 20 & 21, you can find them and any of Phil's supplemental videos at the Phil Rides Across America site (http://www.philridesacrossamerica.com/daily_blog.html).

I'll just continue with what we have at YouTube.

UPDATE - 5/11/09. OMG!!!! CBS has actually posted Days 20 & 21

Day 20: Phil rides into Sutton, NE. Phil is sick. The wind is killing Phil.

Day 21: Phil rides into Omaha, NE. Phil is wiped out, but he does an event at a GNC store in Lincoln, NE.

Day 22: Phil's in Atlantic, IA and in the hospital because he can't keep anything down.

Day 23 & Day 24: Phil is feeling better and he went to Des Moines, IA and Iowa City, IA.

Day 25: Phil heads to Davenport, IA and Phil gets a nice send off from the Iowa Hawkeye!

CBS did not post Day 26 which had Phil going into Rochelle, IL and during which he did a voiceover for the final episode of TAR 14! You can see it over at the Phil Rides Across America site. So we head to Day 27: Phil rides into Chicago!

Title: Re: Phil Rides Across America!
Post by: TARAsia Fan on May 02, 2009, 04:34:08 PM
We continue with the videos.

Since Day 28 was a rest day for Phil in Chicago, he goes over of the highlights of his ride to date. But some jokester at CBS would not allow us to embed it. It's the only one! Jerks!  (:;) (:;) (:;) (:;)

Go here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV3H8pJYBCc) to watch it.

Day 29: Phil heads into Plymouth, IN and I believe it's the Eastern Time Zone (wanna fight about it, ap?). Phil met Bonnie Hunt's mom and sister along the way.

That's where YouTube has left off. The videos go through Day 33 so you can go to Phil's site to check them out. If CBS decides to post more videos, I'll put them there.

Anyone who has ever driven Interstate 80 across Pennsylvania knows how hilly it is. Phil is discovering America the hard way, but for a good cause. Also, he does need to be in Manhattan by Sunday night in order to fulfill his obligations to CBS so why not a 3000+ mile bike ride?

Back with some more videos.

Day 30: Phil heads into Fort Wayne, IN. Phil loses it as Scottie Boombastic messes up his hotel room.

Day 31: Phil rides into Lima, OH and is greeted by a woman who did her own Pit Stop for Phil. And Phil has a police escort from Indiana into Ohio. Plus, he does another live spot with Bonnie Hunt.

Day 32: Phil goes into Columbus, OH. And this is the day where Phil takes a really bad spill on some slippery railroad tracks. Oh, and Phil shows his nekkid butt.

Day 33: Phil rides tentatively into Dennison, OH. Brad from Brad & Victoria of TAR14 rides with Phil and refuses to say who was responsible for the Luke/Jen push.

Day 34: Phil steams into the Steel City of Pittsburgh and does his video blog from a GNC store. Another former racer, Ray from Ray & Deanna of TAR7 rides with Phil. And on Day 35, Phil is resting. Good for Phil.

That's it for now. More videos through Day 37 can be seen at the Phil Rides Across America site (http://www.philridesacrossamerica.com/daily_blog.html).

Koeghan  :groan:  Wraps Up Amazing Bike Ride
"Amazing Race" Host Crosses Finish Line On Early Show Plaza; Rode 3,500 Miles Raising Funds For MS Research

(CBS)  The finale of the latest season of "The Amazing Race" will be broadcast Sunday night.

Call it coincidence -- or the successful execution of perfectly planned timing -- but "Race" host Phil Keoghan concluded an amazing journey of his own Friday -- crossing the finish line in The Early Show plaza of a 3,500 mile, cross-country bike ride that raised funds for Multiple Sclerosis research.

His "Ride Across America" kicked off March 28 in Los Angeles and took him through 39 cities over those 45 days. The ride was sponsored by GNC.

Keoghan raised $400,000 in all. That works out to more than $100 per mile!

He says the best part of the trip was the thousands and thousands of people he and his fellow riders met along the way. "Amazing Race" fans came from everywhere to show their support. People who live with MS every day were in each of the cities, rooting them on.

The worst part? Getting sick in Nebraska and having to go to an emergency room and have saline drips, then having to get up the next morning and pump out 100 miles with essentially little or no water. He couldn't stomach anything.

It was, says Keoghan, definitely the hardest physical challenge of his life. He averaged 100 miles a day which, he concedes, gets pretty grueling after awhile.

OMG! CBS actually uploaded Days 20 & 21 so I have added them to this post (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,18596.msg393860.html#msg393860).

Let's continue from Day 35.

This is Day 36. Phil goes from Pittsburgh, PA into Frostburg, MD. Phil goes up some 11,500 feet. Wow. And Phil loses it a bit.

Day 37: Phil finds out that he could have ridden a nice path into Frostburg. Well, they ride on that path into Cumberland, MD. Phil goes into a steam train, then rides his bike into Hagerstown, MD.

Day 40: Phil is heading out from Baltimore after riding from Hagerstown to DC to the Charm City. He heads into Philadelphia and meets up with Brenda from TAR1!

Day 41: We've reached the end of an amazing ride. Phil leaves Philly and rides into New York City. Phil pays tribute to the crew that has followed him across the country.

Thank you, Phil! Great job and this has been fun updating you with the Tweets and the videos. It was my idea to do the Tweets. puddin forced me to do the videos.  :taze :taze :taze :taze :taze :whips :whips :whips :whips :whips

I'm joking about being forced. She actually gave me a push because I had no idea they were up on YouTube.

So we're done with the videos. I'm taking the summer off. I'll see you all in the fall.  :waves: :waves: :waves: :waves: :waves:

There's a cool highlight video that was produced by the same people who did the daily video blogs. It has been posted on sites other than the official Phil Rides Across America site. When it's posted on YouTube, I'll put it up here. And Phil's wife is very hot.

Ken, thanks for giving us all easy access to the photos and videos of Phil's trip. From the standpoint of geography, I am amused by some of your probably intentional errors. For example:

Quote

I think that is possible, but he would have to ride elevators in Pittsburgh for a long time to do that. The highest
point in Pennsylvania is Mt. Adams in the southwest part of the state at 3213 feet. Just a bit shy of 11,500 feet, which can't even be done in Colorado due to the base level of the 14,000 foot peaks being well above 5,000. It can be done in California but only at a place like Mt. Whitney with a low base below a high mountain or Alaska or Hawaii.

Now maybe you mean counting the same elevation gain multiple times with going down before going up again. The total uphill portion of multiple hills or mountains could exceed 11,500 feet even if no individual peak was more than 1/4 of that.

Pennsylvania does has many small hills. Anybody who has ever driven Interstate 80 from Delaware Water Gap all the way to the Shenango River at its western edge can attest to this. It would be the same crossing southwest Pennsylvania from Pittsburgh to Cumberland MD.

I sorta remember Phil saying the ride thru PA had the most total climbing of any day...

The recap highlight show they aired at the CBS party right before the finale of TAR started. It is fun to see...

And it is NOT too late to contribute to Phil's ride, MS is an awful disease and most of us know someone touched by this. so contribute if yoiu can, every $$ helps!!

ap, I am going off the video where Phil looks at his gage and mentions that they climbed a total of 11,500 feet. Watch the video there. What you say is probably correct, they they go by the total amount they climbed that day.

I never did figure out Phils route through Pa.? I know it wasn't RT 80 or the Turnpike for sure as bikes and pedestrians are not allowed.

Check out some of the highlights of Phil's ride across America

puddin, I cannot say for sure which route Phil took, but it is clear that he ended up in Frostburg MD. That means  Interstate 68/US 40 at exit 33 or Alternate US40 into Frostburg. There are two ways he could have gotten there:

1. PA 51 south from Pittsburgh to Uniontown, then US40 east to connect at exit 14 of US68 where those two highways merge or at exit 14 stay on what is there known as Alternate US40 or

2. east from Pittsburgh on Interstate 376 to Interstate 70/76 the Pennsylvania Turnpike to the Somerset exit, then PA 31 east for 2 miles to PA 160 for maybe 3 miles to Brotherton, then the connecting road to Garrett, where US219 is joined for 4 miles, then southeast through Meyerdale, Glade City and Pocohontas southeast on a county road to the Maryland border where it becomes MD546 for maybe 6 miles until it joins either Alternate US40 of I68/US40 maybe 5 miles west of Frostburg.

As many of you know, the massive footage from Phil's Ride Across America has been turned into a movie. Although release dates and formats are not yet known, the full length trailer is out.

I followed the Ride on a day to day basis as it happened...and this still gave me goosebumps. Amazing!!

I checked on the presentation in Dallas. When I clicked through to purchase tickets.......the map doesnt match. The Fandango map. If you put the address of the theater in MapQuest....you get the correct location.

They are not showing the film in the most optimum location for DFW in my mind. The prime bicycle riding population is about 20 miles from the theater they are actually showing the film. I just wonder who they are targeting for their audience.

Even though Lance Armstrong is known for his residence in Austin, he went to HS here and I would have thought they would have shown the film in the part of town where he lived and grew up. That is the prime bicycle riding population. If they wanted to go to where the "Big" donors live......well they missed that part of town too.

It is my understanding that ALL proceeds are going to MS. So pehaps the organizers had to go with whatever theatre would donate time and space?

If  there is a map error I would let someone at nooppotunitywasted.com know...thry would probably be glad of the info.

And Fandango has a place to contact them for theatre revisions:
listings@fandango.com

and perhaps let the theatre manager know too?

I checked Regal Theater's main web page. They only have 4 complexes here in DFW and they are showing the movie at the one closest to the prime audience area. The main problem is that all their complexes are in pretty low economic parts of town. Bike riders tend to be in higher economic parts of town.

They do have a discount for Senior citizens.....the age limit is 60 and above. The theater is probably 20 miles from me, so about a 40+ minute drive at that time of day.
