Title: The Amazing Race Asia 2 Contestant/ Media thread
Post by: georgiapeach on September 26, 2007, 03:04:25 PM
Cast Spoilers! :wohoo:

Tucked away in this Sponsor announcement (http://www.indiantelevision.com/mam/headlines/y2k7/sep/sepmam117.php):

Quote
10 teams of various nationalities and varied cultural backgrounds from Asian nations including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Japan, have beat out over 2500 applicants (and even past participants of the original US series) to gain a spot in the race, for an adventure of their lifetime.

The contestants are pairs of: dancing mummies who travel together without their children for the first time since their birth; couples who have known each other from 2 to 13 years; reunited siblings; childhood friends; TV hosts; and the very first hearing-impaired contestant in The Amazing Race history, with his gym buddy who he has known for barely nine months.

BJ is the only one I can think of who has ties to Asia--any one else??

But TV hosts??

Collin & Adrian - Singapore, below
 Aurelia = Hong Kong

Sign language is our secret weapon
S'pore team has show's first hearing-impaired contestant
By Jeanmarie Tan

THIS is one amazing pair who will make you sit up and listen.

(From far left) Collin Low and Adrian Yap. -- Pictures: JONATHAN CHOO
Out of 2,500 applications from all over the region, gym buddies Adrian Yap and Collin Low were the only Singapore team to make it to the cast of the second season of the reality TV series The Amazing Race Asia.

Others on the Emmy-winning international version have suffered from dwarfism and shown off a prosthetic leg, but Adrian, 27, is the first hearing-impaired contestant in The Amazing Race's history.

The business development manager relies on sign language to communicate with his partner Collin, 35, a regional sales director.

They first met nine months ago, at a gym where Collin works as a part-time fitness and pilates instructor.

The athletic duo found similar interests in swimming, marathon running and travelling, and quickly formed a strong friendship.

Adrian is quick to dispel doubts about his deafness affecting him on the show, which has already wrapped filming. It will premiere on AXN (StarHub Channel 19) at the end of theyear.

NOT A BARRIER

He told The New Paper at a press conference at Clarke Quay's Indochine - The Forbidden City last night: 'I want to be a good, living example of how having a disability is not a barrier or problem. I've come so far already and I've covered so many places, so it's not an obstacle.

'It's about managing your mindset, being positive and optimistic, and everybody will love you for that.'

Collin, who learnt sign language 10 years ago and interprets for the hearing-impaired at his church, added: 'We want to prove that... he's able to overcome so many things. We want to make a statement for all disabled people out there.'

When he was 9, Adrian enrolled in a special school for four years and learnt speech therapy and lip-reading, enabling him to attend mainstream schools and the National University of Singapore later.

His story was featured on the Channel U docudrama series My Life Journey. And the Amazing Race Asia is not his first travel adventure.

Last year, he took part in the Clipper Race, an annual yacht race that saw him navigating the seas for three months. He also embarked on a month-long solo expedition to Nepal in the middle of winter.

He and Collin, both jovial underdogs, look set to be fan favourites in the new batch of 10 teams from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Japan and elsewhere.

Their biggest challenge was driving, which led to communication breakdown, navigational errors and 'moments of tension'.
Collin drove and Adrian read maps from the back seat, Adrian could only read Collin's lips from the rear-view mirror and Collin could only sign back to Adrian using one free hand.

You can imagine how much tougher that would have been at night.

But at least sign language has its advantages - they've even proudly called it their 'secret weapon'.

Collin said: 'It's useful when we're in front of other teams or the production crew, or want to discuss strategy and don't want others to know. We also don't need to shout to each other when we're, say, 5m away. We just signaway!'

Hi Neobie and Schwarzmoor! :waves:

Nice finds!!

I was just coming in to say that there must be a full list somewhere because my mailbox is overflowing with news! :wohoo:

Let's see if we can pull it together!

From Neobies article:

Hey good-looking, let's race
The contestants for the next season of The Amazing Race Asia are a handsome lot
By Lee Sze Yong, MEDIA REPORTER

Team Singapore: Business development manager Adrian Yap and regional sales director Collin Low (centre, wearing singlets) and the rest of the nine teams of The Amazing Race Asia. Writer Sophie Teng (behind Low, wearing red T-shirt) is also a Singaporean, but flies the Hong Kong flag. -- PHOTO: AXN

WHAT a beautiful game.
We are not talking about football but the competition in the second season of The Amazing Race Asia.

When cable channel AXN revealed the 10 teams of the reality TV show at Clarke Quay's Indochine - The Forbidden City on Wednesday, wolf whistles could be heard.

All 20 contestants - from Thailand-based VJ-model Paula Taylor to the oldest competitor, retired US Navy officer Henry Reed from the Philippines - had svelte, taut bodies.

The good physiques certainly came in handy when the teams travelled to 15 countries in four continents in July, covering 54,000km. Up for grabs is a booty of US$100,000 (S$149,800).

Executive producer Michael McKay said the good-looking cast, selected from 2,500 contestants from the region, was 'absolutely not a deliberate thing'.

He said: 'Personality, not looks, was what we were looking for.'

Referring to the chubby Indonesian brothers from season one, Mardy and Marsio Juwono, he said: 'True, none are interesting-looking people like the M&M brothers, but they are no less interesting.'

Take the Singapore team, made up of gym rats Adrian Yap, 27, and Collin Low, 35.

Low is the first hearing-impaired contestant in The Amazing Race history. Yap, a business development manager, communicates with Low using sign language, which he learnt 10 years ago.

Low, a regional sales director, said: 'It's useful when we want to discuss strategy and don't want others to know.'

Another Singaporean is writer Sophie Teng, 27, although she flies a different flag. She represents team Hong Kong with her ex-flatmate, France-born model Aurelia Chenat, 24.

The two are an unlikely pairing, as they are not exactly bosom buddies, even before the race. The bubbly Chenat still blames the more serious Teng for kicking her out of the apartment when they lived with each other two years ago.

However, when Teng's original partner for the competition had to back out at the last minute, she approached Chenat to join her.

Asked if they were still friends after the race, Teng would only say: 'You have to watch the show to find out.'

szeyong@sph.com.sg

The Amazing Race Asia 2, which is in post-production now, will premiere at the end of the year on AXN (StarHub Channel 19).

AirTime has been held back.

more coming....

From this article (http://showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/you/super/view_article.php?article_id=91319):

more about
Quote
Our very own TV personalities Rovilson Fernandez and Marc Nelson form one of the two teams from the Philippines. They call themselves Team Rovilson and Marc, or Team Marc and Rovilson, depending on who you’re asking.
Quote
“On the show, we were the clowns whilst being very competitive. We’d like to think that we had a great time. Yes, it was about winning; but at the end of the day, you wanna have a great time. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime. You’re traveling around the world with one of your best friends. Sometimes it was really just about kicking back and enjoying it. Sure we play it up sometimes but when they watch the show, they’ll see Rovilson and I being Rovilson and I. It’s who we are in real life. We are idiots.”

From  this blog (http://235guys.blogspot.com/2007/09/newurbanmalecom-party-tanks-in-amazing.html):

Quote
The Singapore Team, which made up of Adrian Yap and Collin Low, was spotted on The Straits Times Friday, September 28, 2007, page 6 of the Life! section. They were wearing our signature party tanks, showing off their lean and chiseled muscles, all ready for The Amazing Race Asia.

So here's what we have for now? Darn AXN and their obsession with young teams! :dick (Just a rough one from MS Paint until I get home to my computer for the weekend!)

Monica & Edwin (Hong Kong)
Rovilson & Marc (Philippines)
Paula & ? (Thailand)
Aurelia & Sophie (Hong Kong)
Henry & ? (Philippines)
Adrian & Collin (Singapore - survive until at least Prague)

Could the girls in blue be the 'dancing mummies'? And who the heck could the reunited siblings be?

We also need teams from Japan, Malaysia and Indonesia... The ones in red I would say Japan, the pair on the left from Malaysia, and the girls in blue Indonesia?

High-five Georgiapeach! (Yep, that's the Philippines flag on Henry's royal blue top...)

Just noticed this (blame my bad counting skills), but WHERE IS THE TENTH TEAM?

FELT that the previous season's contestants had the personality of a door knob?
Well, three new teams are set to drum up the drama on The Amazing Race Asia 2.
Like the Hong Kong team of Monica Lo, 28, and Edwin Lo, 26.
These high school sweethearts and former residents of Toronto, Canada have been dating on and off for 10years.
Monica is an actress who won the Miss Chinese International title in 1997, while event organiser Edwin has been nicknamed 'Drama King' by hisfriends.
The pair are already calling themselves the 'Rob and Amber' of The Amazing Race Asia.
Married couple Rob Mariano and Amber Brkich met on Survivor and competed in The Amazing Race together twice, eventually becoming one of reality TV's most memorable villains.
Edwin and Monica have declared the teams from the first season of The Amazing Race Asia to be boring, adding they'll 'bring heat and excitement to the viewers' and make Season Two 'a better show'.

Formerly estranged brother-sister duo of Daichi and Sawaka Kawashima from Tokyo is the first Japanese team to join the cast.
The siblings, who are fluent in English, Japanese and Spanish, have only recently reunited after a family misunderstanding three years ago.
Daichi, a 26-year-old interpreter, chose to get married without informing his family.
The eventual discovery of the secret nuptials was a big blow to singer-songwriter Sawaka, 28, and created unhappy memories.

OLDEST TEAM
Husband-and-wife team Henry and Terri Reed from the Philippines, Season Two's oldest team, also look set to send sparks flying.
He is a 48-year-old retired US Navy senior chief petty officer who has been shot off an aircraft carrier.
Together with his homemaker wife, 44, they are, as fitness fanatic Henry puts it, 'borderline dysfunctional'.
He said: 'Make no mistake, this is a race and we plan to destroy our competitors one by one by any legal means necessary.'

Good job cabio!

I had just googled that up--is that like a Malaysian American Idol?

Here is the Wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vince_Chong

He has four younger siblings: Pamela, Daniel, Ian and Sean and an older sister Vanessa,

He started entertaining people through singing when he was a child and was involved in several church plays, singing competitions and modelling advertisements with his sister Vanessa.

And a pic:

It turns out that "Adrian Yap" is not an uncommon name, but I think this (http://www.cshi.com/Alumni/csh-alumni-news-article-010505.html) is a match. As for Collin, I think this (http://www.pilates.com.sg/instructors/body_instructor.html) and these photos (http://www.digilab.com.sg/cgi-bin/search1/locatepics/search.pl?q=388%20QNFATAAC&stype=AND&t=103&s=N&stpos=0) (under "Collin Low Chee Hwa") are matches; this (http://www.visitmaldives.com/mu/latest/update.php?subaction=showfull&id=1153643424&archive=&start_from=&ucat=&), I'm not so sure about.

Aah, just happened to walk by a room at the right time, and the word '-azing' got me running to the TV inside! (Looked pretty stupid staring at the TV taking notes in the middle of a clinic...) Some random things that might be useful:

- Allan tells us not to miss the first episode, when asked about what's going to be different this time round with the contestants.
- They needed a police escort in one of the legs to get to the Pit Stop ahead of the contestants.
- The racers jump queues at customs, bring very little luggage, and use the age-old tactic of hiring taxi drivers over extremely long distances.
- Allan continues to mug racers during non-elimination legs, and on one of them a guy lost it and looked like he wanted to hit the host.

Thanks Neobie--I really wanted to hear about this!  :thankyou:

So what's different about the contestants? Well, unless Ann and Diane have two heads or are 8 months pregnant--not so much? Except they are all gorgeous?

Now we can narrow down who's the violent person but that's a spoiler. Hint, reread post #105 and this article:

The Amazing Race Asia 2
Posted on October 7th, 2007 under News, TV Shows at 4:22 pm
On your mark…

Four continents. Over 50,000 kilometers. 20 feisty contenders. With two Pinoy teams in the running, ‘The Amazing race Asia 2′ promises to be a no-holds-barred scramble to the finish line. We reveal the racers, and the controversial tandem that will get everyone talking

LOST IN TRANSIT Paolo R. Reyes

THERE WE WERE, 35,000 feet above the air, aboard a bumpy flight bound for Singapore, when the throaty cockpit voice of Captain Culan-culan came crackling through the speakers: “Passengers … please fasten your seatbelts … we are about to make our final descent.”

As we returned our seats to the upright position, while dolled-up attendants wheeled away Duty Free carts containing tins of tobacco (or “tow-bay-ko,” as the P.A. system so eloquently announced) and handsome boxes of hard liquor, it was easy to imagine how the very novelty of travel - the unfamiliar scent of foreign soil, the labyrinth of alien streets, the indecipherable accents of strangers - can be easily lost on those preoccupied with way more important things.

Like a fiercely competitive race around the world. Or earning a ticket to early retirement-ville by way of a brag-worthy cash prize.

Be it for $100,000 (or P5 million, more or less) or simply for the glory of being crowned as the winners of “The Amazing Race Asia,” no amount of anxiety-abating downers will ever dampen the adrenaline of those taking part in the riveting, Emmy Award-winning reality TV series.

Last week, during a star-spangled bash at the Indochine Forbidden City in Clark Quay, action-adventure channel AXN finally unveiled the spanking new lineup of teams that will be slugging it out in the “The Amazing Race Asia 2.”

With a television-friendly roster that includes a hearing-impaired Singaporean gym-junkie, estranged siblings from Japan, desperate housewives (and ex-dancers) from Malaysia, hot young starlets from Hong Kong, and two Pinoy teams (including the brawny pair of Marc Nelson and Rovilson Fernandez), the second season promises to be an intense, no-holds-barred scramble to the finish line.

Along the way, of course, expect your weekly dose of bratty tantrums, testosterone-induced clashes, and some serious flirting between the contestants.

“The teams in the second season picked themselves, they beat out 2,500 applicants from all around Asia,” shared Michael McKay, the show’s executive producer and director, at Café del Mar in Siloso Beach, Sentosa. “In the first season, everyone was quite nice to each other. But this time around, the competition is mush more intense. Any one of them could win.”

“To be honest, out of the Philippines alone, we could have picked seven teams,” McKay added. “They were all knockouts. Marc and Rovilson, hands down, had the best audition video we’ve ever seen. It was the same for [the other Filipino team] Terri and Henry Reed. The first 100 seconds of their video was already off the charts. I don’t know what it is about the Philippines, they’re some sort of reality TV factory!”

Full of Tricky Road Blocks and deceptive Detours, “The Amazing Race Asia 2″ is tipped to be another adrenaline-fueled odyssey through the heart of adventure. Witness these 10 feisty teams battle it out over language barriers and time constraints as they race through a multi-country arena spanning Asia and beyond.

Will the obstacles be to hot to handle? Or will they prevail upon the final Pit Stop, proud and patriotic, as the winners of the world’s most celebrated reality-adventure show? Tune in to AXN this November.

-Philippine Daily Inquirer, Saturday, October 6, 2007, D1/D3

:dancer: HI TERI!  Is there any possibility you could share your audition tape with us?? It sounds fabulous! :dancer:

Fire and ice
10/07/07

By Paolo R. Reyes
Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—They may have been mistaken as “Team Africa” by one of the clueless Malaysian contestants, but retired US Navy senior officer Henry Reed, 48, and his strong-willed Filipina wife of 13 years, Terri, 44, are as Pinoy as they come — minus the modest, passive-aggressive personality, that is.

Super sat down with the outspoken husband-wife tandem and grilled them for a full disclosure. (Well, almost. We don’t want them to incur the $5 million penalty that’s cemented in their contract.) One thing’s for sure, these hard-nosed competitors are bound to generate some seismic shockwaves over the boob tube.

What made you decide to join the race?

Terri: It was my idea. I loved watching the show. So I asked Henry if we could. He asked me, “Give me 10 reasons why we should?” I was up till 3 a.m. thinking. Then I got out of bed, grabbed a piece of paper, and wrote down: “P5 million. P5 million. P5 million …” There were 5 million reasons!

Did you have any kind of alliance with Marc and Rovi?

Terri: NO!!! No, no, no. That’s all I can say. And that you’re not going to be disappointed with the Philippine teams this season.

Henry: Alliances really don’t work. It’s such an individual thing. Unlike in “Survivor,” you don’t need anybody else for this game.

Did things get really nasty between the teams?

Terri: You’ll have to wait and see. But it got real nasty between me and Henry.

Henry: In our normal, everyday life, we fight a lot. That is the reality of it. [laughs]

Do you think you’ll be portrayed differently after the final edit?

Terri: I really don’t think so. You better agree with me, Henry!

Henry: It’s real fire, believe me. The only way they could change what really happened, through editing, would be to make us look boring and lovey-dovey.

Terri: I don’t think they’ll be able to find that kind of footage.

Henry: If they could stretch about 38 to 39 seconds of lovey-dovey moments, then hats off to them. There’s too much fire there! [laughs]

What was your edge over the other teams?

Henry: I guess being mature and being together for so long. I think we’re the oldest team.

Terri: Please. Don’t remind them!

Henry: When I was in the military, we traveled around the world. I trusted her to read maps and give me directions. She’s pretty industrious. When she’s focused, nothing is going to stop her. When we were in New York, she had to get some major dental work. The doctor told her she couldn’t eat meat for two weeks and she can’t talk for two days. On the way out of the doctor’s office, she’s already yakking “take me to Sizzlers to have a steak!” She don’t listen to anybody, and she’s always right.

How was your marriage after the race?

Terri: Same thing. Lucky 13. But we promised each other that after 49 years of marriage, he’ll have his “one minute” — a minute when he can have his peace and I cannot say a single word.

Henry: For one minute she can just shut the hell up. She can’t talk to me. She can’t yell at me. She’s just going to leave me alone for 60 seconds. I don’t think she’s going to be able to do it. It ain’t gonna happen! [laughs]

Yet another Amazing Race

By S. INDRAMALAR

Viewers will be in for an explosive time when they tune in to the second season of The Amazing Race Asia.

What do you get when you pair up two ex-housemates who do not get along (one evicted the other from the apartment!) in a gruelling month-long race that is broadcast on TV? Fireworks?

And, what will happen if you put them together with nine other pairs, like a husband and wife with equally strong and sometimes contrasting personalities; two hunky but goofy guys determined to win at all costs; a couple of desperate housewives who dance non-stop; a pair of gorgeous but dogged sisters; a popular young actress and her beau; and a gorgeous VJ and her equally stunning best friend?

Look, Wu’s back: Host Allan Wu guarantees viewers an exciting race.
The answer is obvious: an explosive and sure-to-be entertaining second season of The Amazing Race Asia (Tara 2). That is what Michael McKay, executive producer and director of Tara reckons, at least.

“This race is very, very competitive. There isn’t a team on this race that could not win ? and they all believe they can win, too. We travel further and the pace is really fast ? there was even one time when we had to get Allan (Wu, the host) a police escort so that he could get to the pit stop before the first team arrived,” discloses McKay at the recent launch of the second season in Singapore last month.

Tara 2 will kick off on the AXN channel (Astro channel 701) next month with two teams each from Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines, and one each from Singapore, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand all vying for the US$100,000 (RM350,000) prize money.

These 10 teams made the cut out of about 2,500 entries.

“We had to watch all 2,500-odd audition tapes. People got very creative and did all sorts of things to impress. There were teams that were unsuccessful in season one which sent in their tapes again.

“Unfortunately, what people do not realise is how important it is to choose the right teammate. Sometimes, when viewing the tapes we see a guy who we think is really suitable. Then we look at his team-mate, and well ? it just does not seem right,” says McKay.

Ready to rumble: Teams in The Amazing Race Asia 2.
Last year, Malaysian gals Tee Joe Jer and Zabrina Fernandez emerged champions in the first Tara in an alternatingly uproarious and nail-biting, teeth-gritting race. (Well, wasn’t it?)

Their victory prompted many all-girl teams to submit applications this year, observes McKay.

Incidentally, Zabrina is part of the production crew on the race this season and, according to McKay, she found working on the race even more challenging than being in it.

The first Tara attracted 15 million viewers across Asia – making it the most watched series of the franchise, beating all past seasons of the original US versions that were broadcast in Asia.

Will the second one be as popular?

Well according to McKay and Wu, there are blow-ups to look out for.

“The teams on the first series were friendly with each other most of the time ? you can be sure it ain’t gonna happen here.

“When the race is on, it is on and even if there is an alliance between teams you know it's only because it is mutually beneficial.

“And there are confrontations that are, even by the US (series’) standards, quite major,” reveals McKay.

Competitive or not, there is one glaring detail about this season’s competitors: many of them are celebrities or personalities in their respective countries and they are all either good looking or superbly fit.

Some of them have been featured on TV or in magazines.

Here is a sneak peek: From Thailand there is the beautiful Paula Taylor, who is a Channel [V] VJ and rising actress in Thailand and her teammate Natasha Monks; from Indonesia we have Kinaryosih, a very popular and beautiful actress who won the best supporting actress in Indonesia’s Citra awards (equivalent to the Oscars) and her correspondingly fine boyfriend Brett.

From the Philippines are TV host and editor Rovilson Fernandez and model and host Marc Nelson – two men so handsome you may actually hope they do not get eliminated just so they will be around, Malaysian sisters Pamela and Vanessa Chong (sisters of Akademi Fantasia season one winner Vince Chong) prove that you can have beauty and brains, Hong Kong teams (boast a French model and an actress among them, while the “Desperate Housewives” aka Dancing Mums from Malaysia are far from the stereotypical frumpy mums ? enough said.

Was this a deliberate move by AXN to attract more viewers?

“Not really,” says McKay. “For the Asian version of The Amazing Race ? we are competing in a different market place and I guess it helps if people know and can identify the contestants.

“And, being in the public eye, these contestants were not so uncomfortable having the cameras around them about all the time.

“However, not all are celebrities and it was not really a deliberate move.”

Our femme fatales
Four gutsy ladies make up the two Malaysian teams.

For sisters Pamela and Vanessa Chong, getting picked to compete in The Amazing Race Asia Two (Tara 2) is possibly the most amazing part of the whole race experience.

“When we found out that we got in, it was ? it was better than falling in love. Really, it was,” says Pamela, 24.

The Strong Chongs: Sisters Vanessa (left) and Pamela were over the moon about being in The Amazing Race Asia 2.
“Yeah. Once we got the call, I was like, 'O my God. Is this real?' It was amazing,” adds Vanessa, 29.

If you think the Chong girls look familiar it is because they resemble their famous brother – singer and Akademi Fantasia (season one) winner Vince Chong.

As fans of the Race (both the American versions and the Asian one), the Chong sisters are confident that they will make a good team.

“We know each other really well and have known each other for ? 24 years! We each have different strong points and I think we complement each other. For example, Pam is stronger and is better at tasks that involve strength like climbing,” explains Vanessa.

Though they trained – they started hiking, jogging, swimming and kickboxing to build up their stamina – they are apprehensive about how they will perform in the race.

“We are confident by nature but sometimes you think you can do something and then, when the time comes you begin to have doubts.

“And, because the all-girl Malaysian team won the last time, there is some added pressure ? what if we don't do as well.

“But then we decided we are going on this race for ourselves. It is not like it’s the Olympics,” says Pamela. They also tag themselves as the “Strong Chongs”.

As the Chongs are a close-knit family, keeping their involvement in the Race a secret was quite a feat.

(To maintain the suspense, teams could not let on to anyone – family, friends or employers – that they were part of the Race until the entire race had been taped).

“We became really good storytellers. We told them we had to be in Dubai to train for an airline job,” says Vanessa.

Adds Pamela, “Our stories evolved along the way. When we told them that we could not bring our handphones and when they saw us packing our sneakers and sports attire they questioned us. We said that we had to do combat training,” says Pamela.

To explain why they had to remain incommunicado for a month, Vanessa says, “We said it was because we would be flying with celebrities and politicians and other important people ? so privacy was important.”

Prior to running the race, teams had to sign a confidentiality agreement with the producers, which, among other things disallowed them from revealing details of the Race (locations, participating teams and other details, especially which team won).

The fine for breaching the agreement is a hefty US$5mil (RM17.5mil)!

Hot mammas: Douglas (left) and Tan definitely challenge the stereotype of dumpy, harassed housewives.
With such a stiff penalty, keeping their mouths sealed was pretty easy, says Diane Douglas of the second Malaysian team, tagged the Desperate Housewives aka The Dancing Mums.

“When we came back a friend of mine offered to give me a platinum card if I told him who won ? and I told him that if he had US$5 mil to spare, I'd tell him right away!” laughs Douglas.

Cooking up an alibi for their month-long absence was simpler for Douglas and her teammate Ann Tan than for the Chong sisters.

“We just told them that we were going to Australia for a dance boot camp,” says Douglas, 33, who, being an Amazing Race fan, invited Tan to be her team mate.

The two dance enthusiasts are hoping to show other mums, housewives and everybody else that the fun does not stop when you have a family or children.

Unfortunately, they could not train or prepare much as they were only notified three days before they were due to leave for the Race.

“We basically had just enough time to sort out our family and work commitments,” recalls Douglas.

The duo, however, did not see this as an obstacle as “physical fitness was only one aspect of the race”.

“You don't really have to be super fit to run the race as there are other challenges that do not require physical strength alone.

“What was important was that we were willing to do anything ? dig trenches, eat anything, climb walls ?,” says Tan, who teaches dance at her studio in Kuala Lumpur.

“The best part about the race for the two hot mammas was the anticipation of what was ahead of them.

“We really had no idea what to expect ? we never know what we had to do or even where we would be headed.

“We had absolutely no clue what was about to happen and that was exciting. It was like an adventure holiday, but better because nothing was planned,” says Tan, 40.

“Yeah. I loved the adrenaline rush that I got throughout the race. It just drove us on,” adds Douglas.

Is the race really as intense as it appears on TV?

“It is 10,000 times more intense because one leg could sometimes stretch over two or three days. On TV it is all in one episode!

“Also, we only got 12 hours rest in between legs and we had to do our laundry, rest and do whatever else within that time before we were racing again. It was really intense,” says Tan, a mother of three children aged 16, 13 and two.

“Most times we don't have time to think about anything else other than the race.

“Many people asked if we missed our kids, and to be honest, maybe at night when we were resting, we did. But the rest of the time we had no time to miss anyone,” says mother-of-two Douglas.

Vanity had also to be left behind.

“Because we were on a race, we could not check in our bags. Our backpacks were our hand luggage as we had to be ready to dash all the time.

“So, because of the new (travel) requirements on the amount of liquid we could carry we had to limit what we could bring.

“We shared our shampoo, conditioner, suntan lotion and moisturiser and of course we had to leave our bath salts and face masks behind,” says Tan with a laugh.

So what can viewers expect on Tara 2?

“Look out for lots of action ... and humour too,” says Douglas.

Meet the challengers

We have met the two Malaysian teams. Now meet the eight other teams looking to take the mantle away from Malaysia. Let's see who they are.

Singapore

Colin Low, 36, regional sales director and Adrian Yap, 27, business development manager

Relationship: Gym buddies

Young, energetic and passionate about their fitness, the gym buddies are in such good shape they could have an advantage over their competitors.

Some teams, however, may brush them off as a weak team because of Yap's hearing disability. He has to at times rely on sign language to communicate with Low. Will his shortcoming prove to be a hindrance in the race or will he fool the other teams into complacency? Watch.

Indonesia

Team Indonesia.
Kinaryosih, 28, model/ actress and Brett Money, 26, physiotherapist

Relationship: Dating two years

This good-looking couple's love for travel was one reason they decided to try out for the race. Will this be enough for them to get through the gruelling race? Will Money's surfing prowess and Kinaryosih's charm win them the race? We shall see.

Thailand

Team Thailand.
Paula Taylor, 24, actress/ VJ/ model and Natasha Monks, 24, public relations/ brand consultant

Relationship: Childhood friends

What chance does two beautiful girls have in a kick-butt race like The Amazing Race? Will the childhood friends remain close after a month of roughing it out with each other? The duo admit that when they watch the Race on TV, they think they can do all the tasks.

"Now we have the chance to prove it to people," says Paula.

Will being beautiful be a disadvantage?

"No, I think it could work to our advantage. People will assume that we won't be able to actually do much and we can use that to our advantage and move forward" says Paula.

Really?

Japan

Team Japan.
Daichi Kawashima, 26, and Sawaka Kawashima, 28, Singer, both interpreters

Relationship: Brother and sister

The first Japanese team to join the cast of The Amazing Race Asia, Daichi and Sawaka only recently reunited after a family misunderstanding that happened three years ago. Will the race offer them a chance to re-discover the family love they once shared, or will they buckle under the pressure of their strained family ties?

The once-close siblings are sports enthusiasts: they both love soccer and basketball and though Daichi holds a black belt in karate, Sawaka is always looking out for her younger brother.

Apart from being reality TV fans, Sawaka is hoping the Race could help her launch her music career beyond Japan. Will they win the race? Will Sawaka get famous?

Team Hong Kong.
Hong Kong

Monica Lo, 28, actress/ model/ student and Edwin Lo, 26, event organiser

Relationship: Dating 10 years

Drama has always been the spice that drives the lives of Monica and Edwin. Monica is an actress so that's normal, but Edwin is nicknamed “Drama King” by his friends. Therefore, the two hope to drum up the drama in the race by assuming the roles of the notorious Rob and Amber (from the US version). They are determined to instil fear in the other teams and make this a race worth watching. Will they succeed or will the drama be their elimination? Watch on.

Hong Kong

Team Hong Kong.
Aurelia Chenat, 24, model, and Sophie Teng, 27, writer

Relationship: Ex-housemates

If there are fireworks in this race, you can be sure that some of it will come from these two. Both in the prime of their life, the Hong Kong residents are attractive, outgoing and personable. But the similarities stop here.

Sophie, who was a writer in an advertising agency, quit her job to take part in the race. She is serious and reflective and hopes her participation will lead to her lifelong dream of becoming a TV presenter and travel writer.

Aurelia, on the other hand, is a bubbly and chatty model who loves meeting interesting people. Though born and bred in France, she considers Hong Kong her home.

The two met through a mutual friend and become housemates ? but only briefly. There was no chemistry but there were some explosions. Will they manage to patch things up here or will they eat each other alive?

Philippines

Team Philippines.
Rovilson Fernandez, 30, TV host/ magazine editor and Marc Nelson, 31, TV host/ model

Relationship: Best buddies

Hunks. That’s about the first thing that comes to mind when you see these best friends. And then you learn that they are comedians too ? well they like to joke about each other. And, they are fighters determined to win the race and take home the US$100,000 prize money.

Can we take these pretty boys ? ok, handsome men, seriously? Or will they say goodbye before we get our fill of their good looks?

Philippines

Team Philippines.
Terri Reed, 44, housewife and Henry Reed, 48, retired US Navy senior chief petty officer

Relationship: Married 13 years

When it comes to discipline, dedication and effort placed in getting things done, nothing prepares you quite like the military and after over 20 years of serving his country, the retired Navy officer and his wife are all set for war ? on the race, that is.

Their only stumbling block could be the clashing of their strong personalities. Describing themselves as "borderline dysfunctional", Henry admits that the toughest part of the race was dealing with his wife.

Indeed, before anything takes off, the duo can be seen talking, and then arguing, and then smiling and laughing and then they start arguing again.

Will they make it through, arguments and all?

I finally had the opportunity this morning to view the Racers Revealed one hour program to introduce the 10 teams competing in ARA2. I formed some clear new opinions from this program beyond the wealth of information I already had access to. My new thoughts are:

1. Edwin and Monica are in trouble before they start due to Edwin's massive superiority complex that appears totally unwarranted.

2. There are 4 female/female teams in ARA2. The stronger teams that I think will last longer are Vanessa and Pamela and Paula and Natasha.

3. The weaker female/female teams that will be out sooner are Ann and Diane and Aurelia and Sophie.

4. I think Henry and Terri will overcome their intense bickering. Many Amazing Race finalists have overcome this. I think that's how far they will go.

5. I am not impressed by Collin and Adrian. They are quick but not strong. They will probably be approximately 4th out.

6. Brett and Kinar impress me as a tough team. I expect them to be Final 3.

7. I expect the third Final 3 team to be Rovilson and Marc. They are a strong male/male team.

8. That leaves Daichi and Sawaka. They could surprise me either way, but I expect they will be approximately the last(7th) team out before the Final 3.

There are a few things I need to update.

One, the "satellite" where I normally get the TARA episodes has been shut down.

Two, the regular source who informs me when the episodes are on "satellite" is on holiday and won't be back until November 27 so there could be a delay for those of us here in the States to find the episode.

Three, I'll have my comments after I'm able to get the proper "coordinates".
