Maybe some strange seafood as they visited Cheung Chau
e.g. Shrimp Paste
or
Local Snacks in Mong Kok or Tsim Sha Chui
e.g. Stinky Tofu

omg i am so excited that TAR finally have a food challenge in the food paradise  :hearts:

Don't be surprised if that quote is just an offhand comment they are using for the title. Someone might just say that after they discover where they are headed.

BUT HOW COULD YOU HATE CHINESE FOOD???

Anyways... I think it's not Nat and Kat, or Brook and Claire.

Anyways... I think it's not Nat and Kat, or Brook and Claire.

It would only be Kat if the Chinese food involved meat and it was a Detour task or a regular Route Info (unlikely).  If it was a Roadblock, Nat could do it since Kat's a vegetarian.  But I doubt it's Nat, Brook or Claire either.

Kat isn't a vegetarian anymore!
For some reason, I think Vicki says this title.

Just joking, but why would she refuse to eat meat now when she did not in another leg. If Nat would do the RB to help her out it would make sense, but  :whever: it doesn't matter.

Actually, it could be a random comment of a Racer taken out of context. (Show's been known to do that in the past.) That won't be clearer until there's more to work with than just the title.

Vicky is one of THE most kickass Girlfriend racers we've ever had on this show. She's constantly outperformed Nick, dragged him across the world while he was moaning and bitching and berating her. Hell, she's constantly physically outperformed most of the men on the race. She's also sweet and chill and beautiful. Dump. Him. NOW. (Sadly, I don't think it's going to happen...)

It also looks like Brook and Claire catch up with Jill and Thomas since Brook, Jill and Kat are all standing next to each other in the promo. So...yay that Thomas and Jill's insane lead doesn't carry over to the next leg.

I just hate Nicks attidtude towards Vicki, she should just leacve him.

I couldn't believe the way he spoke to her and I hope he apologized even if we don't get to see it. She's outdone him many times and not using the U-Turn was her idea. Kudos to her!

I don't know what sort of edit they're getting, but more importantly Nick-Vicki are in serious Race trouble. Nick has now done six roadblocks, and with 12 legs, I assume the roadblock limit of 6 still exists; and Nick cannot do any more roadblocks. Not to mention that their placement average is about two whole placements below the other three teams, who are as close in that average as you can be without being tied.

Nick and Vicki are starting to remind me of Rebecca and what's him name from TAR 6.

the schnauzers...
I have been trying to figure out how they get so far behind the other 3 teams in this leg. They got great airplane karma in the Bangladesh leg.......so maybe bad airplane karma in Hong Kong leg.......but your reminding me of the 6 RBs that Nick has done...........now maybe we get a RB that Vicki cant do or it takes her an extraordinary amount of time......anyway......maybe a 4 hour penalty in the next episode if she cant do it.

Since we have a sighting in Cheung Chau
I think N/V are at the Central Pier 5, waiting for the ferry to Cheung Chay.

p.s. If the re-visit the star ferry again (S2 S11 and S17 ... which means 3 times (:;))
       I will be very disappointed

I don't know what sort of edit they're getting, but more importantly Nick-Vicki are in serious Race trouble. Nick has now done six roadblocks, and with 12 legs, I assume the roadblock limit of 6 still exists; and Nick cannot do any more roadblocks. Not to mention that their placement average is about two whole placements below the other three teams, who are as close in that average as you can be without being tied.

I believe the rule is now 7 Roadblocks... i *think*.

I wonder if that dancing is task-related?  Brook, Kat, and Jill all look like they're on some kind of stage or platform.

And it looks like it'll be Jill's last Roadblock, if the 6/6 rule is still in play, not a 7/5 one.

I think the rule may have only been modified for TAR 16 because of the reverse roadblock, but we'll see.

The food\dancing task is most likely a RB b\c Brooke, Kat, and Jill are seen on the stage. I'm not entirely convinced all that Brooke was doing was required. You know how she is... :bounce

It sounds like something similar to the RB in leg 3 of season 7. I have to lean towards thinking it is Nat and Kat. We know this is a NEL so it could be them...

I agree with Levi Rinno -- I actually think either Nick or Vicki threatens to quit.  Maybe this is why they fall so far behind in their last leg (which we know is in South Korea).

Peach and I must have gotten it at the same time, and I type slower.

And from the promo that aired during NCIS:LA, the food that causes the "violent illness" looks like sushi....but I thought that was Japanese. Is there a Chinese equivalent? I don't eat the stuff so I really do not know.

Nothing equivalent to sushi in China.

So this will be a NEL, correct? Has that been confirmed or is it just pretty much logic since you can't really do an NEL at the second-to-last leg?

I think it is most likely to be a NEL. Unless they follow TAR 9, and have three teams race in the penultimate leg, making that a NEL, though it is unlikely.  :snicker:

The one who wants  to quit has to be Nick he is always complaining for something and when something goes wrong usually accuses Vicky. I will be glad to see them go, although Tomas is equally annoying with his condescending manner towards Jill, just because he has a higher education than her.

Whichever one wants to quit is probably the one who can't eat whatever it is. They may take the 4hr penalty.

The type of task is important as the length of the penalty for quitting a task is different for each type. That it took until the last couple of seasons to learn there was a penalty for a general task, and that in fact, the quitting a detour is still 24 hours, was one of the surprises of the recent editions of TAR.

Well, the penalty for a general task was a surprise.  However, I remember the 24-hour penalty for the Detour -- Nancy & Emily broke a rule in the first season by taking a bus to the Pit Stop instead of looking for the key to the car (in effect, quitting the Detour) and thus got the 24-hour penalty there.

When I suggested that Nick & Vicki fall so far behind because one of them threatens to quit, I was thinking that the task was a Roadblock and that the person who did the Roadblock (most likely Vicki) actually did quit and took the penalty as a result.

From what I remember:

General task = 2 hours
Roadblock = 4 hours
Detour = 24 hours

Now that you say this, it's compatible with the witnesses reporting the 4th team being hours behind the leading teams.

Thanks for the promo everyone.

It looks more like Dim Sum time in the restaurant.

If it really is sushi, then it was completely ridiculous for production to have done that in Hong Kong.  If it is Dim Sum, then those responsible for the commercial should be hanged, drawn and quartered, for being such ignoramuses.

The eating task is the RB with Thomas, Nat, Claire, and Vicki all there at once. I think it is first, maybe before the island.

21 has Nat/Kat on the Star Ferry, not the Cheung Chau ferry. The Cheung Chau ferries are much wider.

This makes Star Ferry and the Central Piers the most visited attraction in all of TAR; it's been featured on six seasons! (TAR 2, TAR 11, TAR 17, TAR:A 2, TAR:A 3, TAR:I)

At the Roadblock, Claire, Thomas, and Nat performs it while their partners are entertaining the guests (or this is all compulsory and Brook decided to dance)?

Thai music, and sushi. Thanks CBS.

Junction of Hennessy and Johnston Rds, in Wan Chai.

And... the A11 airport bus arriving at Jardine House, Central. Looks like the same flight to me.

When I suggested that Nick & Vicki fall so far behind because one of them threatens to quit, I was thinking that the task was a Roadblock and that the person who did the Roadblock (most likely Vicki) actually did quit and took the penalty as a result.

Belle Book

Now that you say this, it's compatible with the witnesses reporting the 4th team being hours behind the leading teams.

I like this theory too. This could be leading the to the crying scene?

Nothing else on Cheung Chau that isn't between the ferry terminal and Cheung Po Tsai Cave. Included the spoiler photo from during filming (A).

With another team getting off the airport bus with Nick/Vicki and the three other teams together at Cheung Chau, all teams must have necessarily got off the same flight. Not sure where Nick/Vicki are on Cheung Chau though.

I'm thinking based on caps 41-42, Thomas is eating supposedly Oyster(???) or any other shellfish-family dish and it's treated more  like sushi. Well, in Chinese banguet, there would be some exotic food like jellyfish and most of them are not considered dimsum.

Anyway, nice to meet you all in RFF!!!

Caps 20 and 21 are from the Star Ferry... 8,9,10 may be from Central Pier in Hong Kong.... 12, 13 and 14 are from some sort of outdoor market....

There is Dim Sum and Seafood!

I think Thomas is eating oysters while Claire is eating a boiled egg?  :duno:
I can't make out what is Nat eating!

But I'm sure Hong Kong has sushi too!

Maybe someone who gets ill after eating says the title!

12-14 are on Cheung Chau, just south of the ferry terminal. I was posting on RFF about my findings in Cheung Chau in the McDonald's you see in the background... 6-8 and 25-28 are also on Cheung Chau, refer to map above.

Here's a shot I took on that day, at pretty much the exact location:

I've looked around for a banquet hall. The only big hotel on Cheung Chau seems to be the Warwick, but the photos don't match. There's a large restaurant at Jardine House called Chiuchow Garden, but I can't get any recent photos because it underwent renovation this year.

Probably not on Cheung Chau (as Slowhatch says, too little options), and probably not Jardine House either (it's the stop to get off for the Central Piers). I'm thinking Tsimshatsui (where the Seibu spoiler came from), but I can't find anything over there...

Conclusion from the cap:
1 19-20 Victoria Harbour
2 3 Dhaka Airport
4-5 21-22 Star Ferry
6-8 12-15 25-28 Cheung Chau
9-11 Central, just get off from the airport bus(which means first location
16-18 Wan Chai
23 36-54 Unknown Restaurant (We have to find it :duno:)
32-35 Central Pier No.5 (Ferry to Cheung Chau)

Speculation: B:)
Race Route in HK
1.Airport to Central
2.Central to Cheung Chau
3.Task in Cheung Chau (Maybe a Detour)
4.Ferry back to Central
5.Travel to Tsim Sha Tsui (through Star Ferry?)
I still doubt Star Ferry (Too Frequent :()... Maybe it is only N/K's choice
6.RB in Tsim Sha Tsui (Unknown Restaurant)
7.Pit Stop

In Cap 2, Brook & Claire are standing in front of a Singapore Airlines desk, could that mean they came through Singapore? Nick & Vicki, if I'm not wrong are standing there too(I could'nt see it clearly, but the line thing behind them seems to have the Singapore Airlines sign.) :ascared  :duno:

If they did,  :'(!

Nick and Vicki do not appear to be on the Star ferry. It may be that N/K took a different way.

It's possible that the clue will contain a warning if for any reason a diabetic could not do that task. In season 14, a Roadblock card said that the participant must be able to hear for safety reasons, and in season 15, a height restriction was placed on a task. Both times these warnings only excluded one racer.

Yes, especially since Nat had to answer any questions regarding her diabetes when she submitted her application.

It is possible that this leg and the next could be boring b\c of a potential penalty that separates one team from the rest. However, this leg could reveal some teams' mental capacities.

They are not eating sushi, they appear be eating dim sum, which makes sense as Hong Kong is known for dim sum. Sushi is JAPANESE for cryin' out loud!

I've been to HK several times and we always stay over in the TST area, so I've been trying to pinpoint the location of this restaurant. So far, no luck.

tivogirl, i was the first one to point out that TPTB or CBS were using "sushi" and I wasn't sure if it was used in Chinese culture at all or not. Din Sum, I can understand (as the TARcon folks almost always have a Din Sum brunch the day after the TAR finale in Manhattan.)

If it's the wrong label, that's just awful, because it isn't what TAR should be doing in showing lesser known elements of other countries and cultures.

I think Nat takes the task because Kat is a vegetarian.  I also think Nat might be able to find some food that she can safely eat.  But I don't think it'll matter much because I think Nick & Vicki come in last because they take a penalty.

Too funny - I was trying to pause and pick out what I could too! I'm sure they'll do some of the things with more interesting textures just to make it entertaining. They'll probably make it look like most dim sum is gross, when it is actually quite the opposite.

Bottom line: that is most definitely NOT sushi! Thanks for backing me up, and for the welcomes!

RE: Sushi v. Dim Sum...

A possible theory of CBS using 'sushi' to generalize the food task is because "Sushi Showdown!" sounds a lot better (with the added alliteration, to boot!) than "Dim Sum Showdown!" Wouldn't you agree?   ;)

Yeah, it's technically wrong, but it's so much fun for the casual viewer to be captivated with awe over a tongue-twister instead of something a bit more boring.  It's all about the excitement!! :lol3: Plus, the average viewer probably knows squat about the difference between dim sum and sushi.....kind of like categorizing all Indian food as Indian, when it's really not.

Thanks 4 the work, Redskooky!

I would lean towards the century egg being the problem here.

Look at this description:

Century egg is a Chinese cuisine ingredient made by preserving eggs in a mixture of clay, salt, lime, and rice hulls for several weeks to several months.
Through the process, the yolk becomes a dark green, cream-like substance with a strong odor of sulphur and ammonia, while the white becomes a dark brown, transparent jelly with little flavor.

Erm.... I do eat century egg congee once in a while, so....   but that's the only way I'll dare to eat the century egg; I won't eat it alone or in a huge piece.... at least the egg gets sliced into bite-size when the bowl reaches me so the taste isn't THAT strong. I used to dare to eat pork liver, intestines and durian when I was a kid though; ironically, not anymore.....

I eat century eggs in congee too since my mother usually adds these eggs when she cooks congee. But I won't eat them plain.

not much like that, they don't reallly serve seafood... o.o

I do not think she is eating a century egg.  The "white" of a century egg is translucent, yet firm, and the yolk is green.  I had some when I visited China a few months ago; they are not bad at all.

Century eggs are delicious, folk. I had some when I went to a Chinese friend's home. With a bit of vinegar, they have an amazing and rich taste.

But yes, I agree that does not look like a century egg, because there shouldn't be any white.  :duno:

Could our find (with a gender-bender) be somehow related then?

One interesting thing of note: while running to Cheung Po Tsai Cave, a man twisted his ankle and had serious problems; an ambulance was called and there was a bit of a delay. It's unclear whether this was a member of the crew or a racer. I checked out the hospital on the island but didn't come up with anything.

I can c how Brooke can b mistaken for a man sometimes by sight since she is very driven in her actions, but not by her voice.

Not a clue.

I do see how it could be made by a CBS team that is not affiliated with the Race and doesn't know what they are doing. These types are only focusing on marketing, not accuracy.

One of TAR 17's final three legs will be in Hong Kong! There will be teams riding tricycles at Cheung Chau, and a checkpoint at Cheung Po Tsai Cave - I wonder if that would be a Roadblock or a Detour? Probably something they took off here or from our sources.

Anyway, the first sentence is meaningless, just like the meaning of "Great news"...

Try to find the restaurant where they got the food task, no luck though. I wonder whether the restaurant is cloes to Seibu department store in Tsimshatsui? Based on leg arrangement it should be, but I could not find similar restaurant around that area.  It does not look like restaurant in a hotel, it looks more like seafood restaurant which is in more Chinese style

btw, it looks so surreal that they took airport bus instead of taxi to start this leg! And they got off outside Jardine House where I passed by every day for work! I wish I was there at that time......

Looking at the screen caps, #43 looks like Thomas behind Brooke and he doesn't look too good.  Plus Nat is in the background and appears to be talking to a chef.  Could she be done?  Thoughts?

Also, with regard to N/V, it looks like as she is crying he snaps at her with "cus' I'm not waiting on your @$$ ever again".  I wonder if they just missed a ferry and have to wait for the next one.  Could that cause a big delay for them?  I find it surprising that they would not finish a task and take apenalty as someone earlier suggested.

That could well be the case!  If Nat's done, that means she & Kat will come in first!   :yess:

Well, the only thing I could think of as to why Nick & Vicki would fall so far behind the other teams is if Vicki couldn't finish the task and thus took the penalty.  But missing a ferry could also contribute to their falling so far behind.  And I'm not suggesting Vicki gave up for no good reason -- I can only assume she got so sick that she really couldn't continue!

I am not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but the normal HoO for the Ding Ding detour (Hong Kong Tramways) is from 6am to midnight - with midnight being the time the last trams depart from their termini.

http://www.hktramways.com/en/service/index.html

Likely, B/C and N/V got to the Bruce Lee Statue late enough for the Ding Ding not to be an option for them and J/T bled enough time at the Ding Ding to force them to switch because they approaching closing time.

Why not wait for the sun to rise and then search again?  This would be less than 6 hours.  Of course they did not know it was a NEL and that the time would actually matter.

I would not surprised if TAR arranged for the Ding-Ding to stay open for them.

The Sushi Showdown task was one that would have been a lot easier with a bright LED head lamp.  Those LEDs have a spectral emission that is slammed hard to the blue end of the rainbow.  It would be possible to actually see a distinct coloration coming from the faux food when illuminated by LED lamps.

I'll have to ask Racers if they were forbidden to use their flashlights!

Maybe they were limited to the use of the chopsticks, or maybe they didn't think of it, although Thomas has a degree and :blahblah:

Sorry if this came up already, but as a Japanese, I feel I have to stand up and say this....

In this leg, Phil mentioned that Hong Kong was known not only for its lavish buffets, but also the intricately made food displays made out of plastic.

It may be commonly seen in Hong Kong, but "fake food" for the purpose of restaurant displays was invented in Japan... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fake_food#History), not in Hong Kong.

Just sayin'...  :waves:

"Commonly seen" is not equal with "invented in." :waves:

Plastic food displays have saved me more than once! I have fond memories of pointing out what I wanted to eat in the windows when I couldn't speak the language.
