peach, are you uploadin promos soon because i wanna use them for a source for a possible 3rd FF
-
I hope this is a great episode! ;)
-
The tiger play they showed in the promo for next week is native to kerala and is often performed during the harvest festival of "Onam" in Aug/Sep.
-
As soon as I can, not tonight though.
-
A comment I originally posted in the Episode 9 live viewing thread:
And the hair shaving fast forward in the next leg (assuming that it is a fast forward....looks like its third appearance on TAR (after TAR 5, leg 9 in Kolkata, and TAR 7, leg 8 in Jodhpur), which has to be a first for the exact same task in the same country no less; and in the first two appearances, both team members had to be head shaved.
-
Based on pictures after this leg (and after filming), I guess she didn't decide to shave her head.
-
below is a pic of the 'tiger men' in the preview, this tiger dance known as Pulikali is part of the Onam Festival in Kerala
SPEC - Mark and Bopper's Speed Bump is they have to paint a tiger onto one of the dancer's bodies (you can see Mark putting what looks like a can of paint back on to a table) and Bopper says 'looks like a tiger to me baby!!!' which could mean they painted it well??
and i am sure the 'hair raising' challenge is an FF
i also noticed in the preview when Vanessa falls down, when Ralph is helping her, there is a ROUTE INFO clue next to his foot, they were on their way to the Pit Stop maybe?? i can't imagine them in such a hurry to get to a regular clue
-

You mean the pictures in Hawaii, i think in those pictures you can't see if she has hair or not.

Brendon obviously has hair so either they don't do it or it is the worst roadblock ever
-
No Way is Rachel shaving her head. Or Vanessa either for that matter. Maybe Bopper is safe for another leg and V/R go next. I can hope anyway.
-
Maybe I am off but Brendon's hair is decidely shorter in that pic than when I watched his confessionals last night, still who knows maybe since they are well known they couldn't cut it all the way otherwise people would have known something was up especially since they are in the spotlight alot, and Rachel easily could have had a weave done again before coming back. Or maybe I want the lulz of Rachel being shaved :lol3:
-
I don`t understand why they do Cochin back-to-back, when there are so many incredible cities and palaces in India. :duno: :duno: :duno: :duno:

Probably to save money?
Good point, but then they could go to another part of India, after Tanzania. They also did Cochin in TAR 4.
-

Well, the key in this whole thing is the time difference between Brenchel and Vanessa & Ralph (the other two teams available to go for the FF) and Mark & Bopper in the 10th. leg starting line.
And I'm speculating with the fact that the SB is before the first task (Detour o RB) of this leg.
-
I think there should be an HoO before the very first task. Then, I could see a SB+FF+RI/DT task.
-
I think this is an almost repeat of the week when the Feds were toasted. In that week, Bopper hurt his knee and we were discussing a major medical problem. I thought that would be it. However, they won. Not saying Ranessa will win this week, since she sprained her ankle, but I'm annoyed with CBS for clearly, this week, manipulating footage to show SOME sort of drama. There's just no way Mopper don't get ousted next week. For one, Bopper's knee is probably jelly. Any task related to something other than walking and driving a cab will kill him. Secondly, they're soooooooo far behind to begin this next leg.
"A snapping or popping sound, the kind I heard when my foot shot out from under me, does not automatically indicate a broken ankle. A sound may also accompany a severe sprain."
http://voices.yahoo.com/broken-ankle-symptoms-break-sprain-1617851.html
-
That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt. I've turned\sprained\torn my ankle a number of times, and believe me, it's not fun. I still think Ranessa is medically elim'd. She won't be able to walk right after that.
-
Here's a post on ACL issues. http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/anterior-cruciate-ligament-acl-surgery
Yes I'm sure it hurts, but who goes faster...a team with a BAD knee (nothing but walking) or a team with a sprained ankle (nothing but limping), Can the bad knee catch up? Don't forget the speedbump.
-
I seriously doubt Bopper has an ACL tear. MAYBE an MCL, but more likely a sprain (but this is not to say that it does not hurt either). Vanessa's ankle is likely to swell if she turned it, making it next to impossible to walk.
Don't forget the Fast Forward. ;D
-
Talking about Vanessa's injury, in TARLA 3 one of the girls (Marisol, from Marisol & José) suffered an injury in one of his knees, and stayed in the race but she has to compete using a wheelchair, and that team could be in the race at least for 4 more legs before their elimination.
-
On the other hand, Meredith (of & Gretchen) apparently wouldn't go to the doctor during the race because he was really worried that he would get pulled from the Race, so production can apparently medical DQ a team if they feel like they wouldn't be able to continue safely. (It turned out he did about three legs with a broken foot.)
Not surprised to apparently see a return of the head-shaving FF since it's the perfect combination of a) bringing the drama and b) cheap. Wouldn't be surprised to then see a return of the tattoo FF in 21 or 22 as well then.
-

I think it could possibly be her shoulder....

Thats what I was thinking too. I wouldn't doubt her ankle hurts from the fall, but it looked more like a shoulder injury to me.

Agree, it sure looks like she is yelling when Ralph is touching her shoulder, but judging from her reaction I don't think it is that serious. Also, since they could probably run to that place and most of the time people run that fast only to go to the pit stop, Ralph could probably carry her to the pit stop if she can't walk.
I guess if Brendon/Rachel did not do the FF, the only chance for them to stay in the race is because M/B were so far behind last leg, I won't be surprised if there is no bunching at the start since it would be more fair to the other teams when the non-eliminated team needs to fight back for staying in the race.
-
Ralph does appear to be touching her shoulder, but she immediately grabs her ankle after her fall. :duno:

This is so cool. Yeah, I've been saying Vanessa's injury isn't that serious. Does anyone do the FWD successfully? This is turning out to be a surpriseless episode. Who takes the cake? The Army or the Border?

I think Mopper wins the leg.

I use google chrome and on chrome, you can zoom the page all the way in. im almost 100% sure the bottom paragragh says "to win the fast forward..."

i wonder how much hair needs to be shaved bc the picture that i cant find of brendon and rachel at the charlotte airport with a fan around christmas; she had hair.
-
Here's the pic. Rachel could always wear a wig but I think that Brendon's hair is too long to have been shaved just a week or so before. They must decide not to do the FF.

Here is my take on the FF:
This is made for Mark and Bopper. ARt and JJ and Dave/Rachel can't, Vanessa and Rachel won't/didn't take it.
BUT Mark/Bopper are some awful amount of time behind AND have a SpeedBump.
Like Nary/Jamie's leg, there is no Airport bunching, this will be a more linear leg.
We can HOPE for a HoO...so far we have the dots on the foreheads, a blessing they have to all receive?
But if there is no HoO, and you are Mark and Bopper and are some HUGE ampunt of time behind....would you waste more time trying for thr FF or would you assume it had alrady been done??
And depending on how far they are behind... even if they do the FF there is no guarantee it is enough time to save them.
We need a HoO!!!
-
I think Mopper can avoid elimination with no bunching and the FF, but not first place. :duno:

Peach, it's what I said in post 20: time is the key factor in this leg. If Mark & Bopper are too separated from Art/JJ, Brenchel and Vanessa/Ralph (I don't include Davechel because they were at the PitStop when the 2nd. team were barely arriving to the coffe place to get their next clue), sadly I think they're gonna need a miracle - that it could be a HoO as you wish - to stay in the race.
Or, maybe, that some other team get a little bite of the race karma. :yess:
-
What is HoO? I've seen this word being used a lot but I have no clue what it means. Thanks!
-
hours of operation
-
hours of operation
Thank you! :)
-
I was thinking about how long it took Mopper to finish last week's roadblock, which relates back to this week. I'm speculating that it would take about 5 hours to mess up the routine 11 times and threaten to quit. Then, their cab runs out of gas; then they still had to do the detour; then there's a speedbump. I think the only way they are not eliminated is if this week's tasks are so long and tedious. But I also recall the great CBS montage of all their experiences and such during the race.
-
If they are over six hours behind then it seems even more likely that WRP will allow the teams to be bunched in order to avoid a predictable episode.
-
New preview up

Mark put on IV bag after last leg
Brenchel on an elephant
teams using wheelbarrows to carry stuff
Vanessa's fall
Brenchel at FF and yes both have to shave their heads and she says I don't wait to shave my head I paid $500 for extensions. :lol3:
alot of good caps to figure out where these things are taking place in it
-
Yes, we need caps for that one there's a lot of stuff in there. Somehow the fact that they continue to dwell on Mopper's woes seems to indicate that they survive again.
Art and JJ pulling boxes on a cart is probably one Detour. (Do the boxes say something about ginger?) And Brenchel riding the elephant and pushing a wheelbarrow of dung is the other option.
What's Vanessa saying? "Tell them to.... ???"

Here you go. :)

When Brenchel is talking about being competitive or something, could they be at an HOO??

thanks peach, I tried to load it but I am not techno savvy like you
-
I'll look at yours in a while, thanks SO much for trying!
PROMO up!
-
I see both a wheelbarrow task and a task using a large cart with crates. Possibly two different tasks.
Art and JJ may have an physical issue of some sort too, hard to tell from the brief clip that was included.
IV line means exhaustion, i suspect, and I doubt seriously this is an extended pit stop, although all of the clips seem to be in the daytime. And don't forget that the amount of time from the release in Tanzania to arrival in Cochin was almost 33-ish hours for Mark and Bopper. So fatigue is very likely to be a serious problem for them along with the physical toll of these last three legs.
Peach, I wish Neobie or someone could attempt to calculate the times from the pit stop check-ins at the end of the episode. My sense is that it is at least mid afternoon for Mark and Bopper, while my impression is that Rachel and Dave likely finished the leg in 3 hours or less once their flight arrived in Cochin, so by 10:00 am.
-

And that seems to be at the RB location, because we see JJ, Vanessa and Rachel, who made the RB in the previous leg, waiting while JJ says "anybody play the game strategically?".

Let's hope that World Race Productions has more integrity that is implied by Prophet's suggestion. I detest even the efforts in telecasts to make finishes of 2 teams seem close when they could not be. I would detest creating a Hours of Operation for the purpose of keeping a popular team competitive even more.
The two things we know are:
1. It was daylight on December 13 (sunset was 605pm) when all teams checked in.
2. "Normal" 12 hour pit stops would have teams released between midnight and 6am. Exactly where in that time period will determine whether there might be a "natural" opening time of buildings or businesses. It is possible that there was one.
-
They got the Bindi somewhere...let's hope that is the first task and a HoO!
Agree about the bunching, routes and tasks are set far in advance.

The fact that Art, Ralph and Brendon are together doing the RB (at least that's what it seems to be), means that point 2 of your spec could be right. We don't see M/B with the rest of the teams, but this may be because the SB is previously to the RB.
-
It would be shady if Mopper make it through another week. As I watched Mark's terrible dancing the very last time he attempted the routine, he totally sucked and made obvious mistakes and they gave him mercy, which is preferential treatment, which makes a big difference if they beat another team because the producers of CBS gave them a break.
-
Giving them a break on the twelfth try and with them suffering from heat exhaustion and with all teams ahead of them is simply humane.

For what it's worth, I've been looking hard for a picture of Mark and Bopper taken after the race was over and finding nothing. I did post something back in January or February about Mark and Bopper appearing at a middle school donkey basketball game, but I can't find any pictures from that event. While you could infer that they were laying low to hide shaved heads, I've searched for pictures of Ralph and Vanessa and Jamie and Nary and not finding anything for those teams either.
-
It will probably be difficult to find any team that is constantly in the public eye like Brenchel is
Interesting that Mopper's first interview is the week after this episode. Their head shaving could definitely be a topic of discussion and a good reason to have them on "The Talk" over another team.

Im pretty sure the bottom 2 words say "hair shaved" or "head shaved".
-
i think this is what we have so far:
Speed Bump - paint men for tiger dance
FF - each team member must have their head shaved
RB - roll up coir (performed by Brendon, Art, Ralph)
DT - transport crates from market? OR use wheelbarrow to transport elephant dung??
-
It look's like Rachel is raising some kind of a small flag while they're on th elephant , where could this fit in ?
-
i just looked at a christmas photo album of bopper and he is nowhere to be seen so perhaps he is laying low.
-

I don't agree, to be honest they even considered to quit last leg and it seems like production wants them to stay, in fact it would make them suffer more if they need to do one or two more legs in such physical conditions.
Also, I agree with apskip that if they catch up with the teams ahead because of a deliberate HoO I would doubt the integrity of the producers.
-
I'm sure these legs are planned out month's in advance. HoO bunching have alway's been apart of the race. I doubt they could throw a task together that would involve HoO in a just few day's.

I am sure there have been others, but the major one I can think of is in TAR 11 where the scrapped the Tanzania leg and put charter dhows into place (so Charla and Mirna wouldn't be like 2 days ahead of the Guidos).

The scene with the Cart and Crates is in "Mattancheri", Fort Cochin, where they have the spice market and warehouse.
here's a photo of the building (http://indianjourneys.files.wordpress.com/2010/10/dsc03008a.jpg) (in the photo the "sweet" is in blue, they must have painted it in Red recently)
and the article http://indianjourneys.wordpress.com/2010/09/03/fort-kochi/
Thanks SO much Jacob!! :hearts:

the more and more i think about it; it's coming together now. after i saw bopper's christmas pics, i wondered why he wasnt in any of the pictures. I 100% think it is bc of the head shaving fast forward.
-
I think it is a Rachel (BB) quote.
-
Why is Brendon holding a route info clue at the Fast Forward? ???

Caps 3 and 4 (and I think number 2 too) are from Davechel travelling in an autorickshaw. Dave is wearing a pink shirt and Rachel is in grey; and in the others caps we see that Brenchel are dressed in green, Ralph in blue and Vanessa in grey too, Art in red and JJ in grey, so they must be the ones in it.

There are some pic's on Boppers fb that were recently posted and he has hair , pretty much look's like he did during the Race.
No racer FB links allowed.

It looks like that picture was taken almost exactly four months after the head shaving would have occurred. Couldn't that short hair have grown back in that time?

Thanks for posting that link. I don't know why I didn't find it.
I agree with you. Those photos from March and April don't show either Bopper or Mark with less hair than they had during the race. I'm not an expert on the rate of hair growth, but I think it's possible Mark's hair could have grown back by then, but not Bopper's somewhat longer hair. I doubt they they had their hair shaved off back in December.

Press photos are up.
Detour A is decorating an elephant and cleaning up after it and is performed by Brenchel, Dave and Rachel
Detour B is packing, crating and delivering ten boxes of ginger and is performed by Art and JJ
Painting the belly of a tiger dancer is the speedbump.
Also, Dave and Rachel are shown receiving a greeting from a High Priest.

There's some from the beginning of March in another album and he look's the same in those too. I really don't think they took the FF , but that's just my opinion. BTW sorry I posted the link , I didn't know we weren't allowed, won't happen again.

i think this is what we have so far:
Speed Bump - paint men for tiger dance
FF - each team member must have their head shaved
RB - roll up coir (performed by Brendon, Art, Ralph)
DT - transport crates from market? OR use wheelbarrow to transport elephant dung??
And with the pictures posted by bc922, we can spec that the first task is receiving the greeting and the next clue - the one that must have the FF I think; because, in the clips Rachel (BB) has the classic mark in her forehead when she is at the FF location -.

Also, with Rachel (BB) and Vanessa at the roadblock place at the same time, that means even Brenchel did not do the FF they somehow caught up with Vanessa/Ralph. It is possible that the V/R were racing against Brenchel when Vanessa fell down.
-
One thing that I find interesting is that CBS obviously doesn't care if we know that Brenchel didn't do the fast forward because they show us many clips and pictures of them doing other tasks. But we don't see Mark and Bopper doing anything but the Speed Bump.

Right. We saw Brenchel at tmz with the same hair from the race.

The caption for Art & JJ's Detour mentions that they get the next clue from the head priest after completing the detour.

It's sketchy, but could Mopper have it at the Speed Bump? :duno:

They definitely get it eventually:

Hmm, has anyone verified the location of the wall behind Bopper in the second picture?
If the Head Priest thing is after the Detour then that is not where they get the red paint from because Rachel (O' Reilly) has it at the FF location.

Can anyone make out the name on the building behind Mopper in the press photo ?

Yes, but the caption of Brenchel doing the other Detour says nothing about it.
-
Prophet: if you enhance the cap of Brenchel doing the Detour, you can see the red mark in Rachel's forehead. So the only logic explanation is - as I said - that they receive the mark in the same place that they got the clue with the indications of where the Detours are and the FF.
Except that she has the red mark while at the Fast Forward. ;D

That's what I saying. They get the red marks, and the clue with the Detours (or the RB) and the FF.. That's the only way to explain that Bopper has the mark at the SB and Rachel at the FF.
-
Oops, then I must have misunderstood.
-
The bindi or Indian beauty mark being on Rachel's forehead has an alternate (and in my view more probable) explanation. As several has observed prior to me, Rachel could have gotten it as the first step in the FAST FORWARD that she and Brendon abandoned. That is more likely than Rachel getting it anywhere else.

Or it's an Indian greeting in some places, kind of like the garland, it's called "Kumkum". I guess they got it from a place where they went to get the clue or from the pit stop when they left. In one of the press photos showing Dave and Rachel , i guess the Red spot (Kumkum) came from those hindu priests. But not 100% sure.

very true, but i definitely think they took the fast forward...bc the album i saw had quite a few pictures and wouldn't u think he would get in at least 1 of the pictures? at this point, i definitely think they took the fast forward.

But this could happened only if the SB is before all of the other tasks, because the SB is an obligatory task - only the last team in a NEL must complete it -, you can't skip it. And we saw B/M at the SpeedBump with the mark in the forehead. Following your reasoning they avoid also the SB so... why are they at the SB location? And what's the gain of taking the FF (or, at least triyng it) if you've got to stop later to do the SB, giving the other teams the chance to make up time?
-

Simple, a FAST FORWARD usually gains its winners one to three hours versus the other teams (although it is sometimes more as in Amazing Race 5 in the Cairo area and sometimes nothing as in Amazing Race 10 for the Madagascar cow lips). That might conceivably make up enough time for Mark and Bopper to stay in this race, although I don't think so.

It's a matter of time, as I've been saying since the beginning, and you are too in that post: time is the key factor in this leg (by the way, Colin & Christie took a hughe advantage in Cairo not only for the FF, they flyed to Egypt earlier than the rest of the pack, arriving by night meanwhile the others had to stay at the Frankfurt airport waiting for the next morning flights; I know you know that but is good to remind it; and you're right about Madagascar - something that let us a moral, never take a FF when you're Intersected and you must eat cow lips -).
But seriously, what I'm trying to explain about the whole FF/SB/DET/RB and the forehead red mark is just like in the next season the race start in Usa, and the first leg is in Japan, and the 2nd. in Brazil, and the 3rd. in China. It has not sense that the bindi was at the end of the Detours and then teams get the instructions for the FF, as someone stated (would you consider - as a member of a team - to try the FF with only the RB between the PS and you?). The spirit of the FF is to allow one team (two if they're Intersected) skip all the tasks of the leg and gain the advantage you mentioned, and this is the reason they're always at the first route marker. What leaves us with two possibilities:
a) the bindi is a part of the FF (your very plausible theory) or b) it comes with the first route marker (as I believe) in some sorte of ceremony (I've got a flashback of a leg in Southeast Asia when, in order to receive their clue, teams must participate of something similar; only I can remember if it was in TAR or TARA or TARAUS).
-
This is my spec
1. Depart Pit Stop
2. HoO at the place where they get the dots, receive a clue to go to SB location
3. At the SB location Mopper do the tiger thing while everybody else gets a RI/FF clue
-
:gaah:
-
Enlarged press photo's are up on cbs , maybe someone can bring them over. You can clearly make out the writing on the wall behind Mopper , hopefully jacobsk68 can translate and tell where they are. ;)

This photo confirms my theory: the bindi is not a part of the FF - we all know that Art and JJ and Davechel are not allowed to take it - (apskip, I truly started to believe that you were right about this), and this is a photo of one of the Detours, so the Head Priest who gives them the next clue at the end is not who made it. So the bindi must be done in the first route marker of the leg, as I stated, along with the clue that contained the first task (Detour/RB) and the FF. And the SB should be before the Detours (Germay) o the RB (Tanzania).

So guy on left has the mark as well, but not the tall one. Maybe they give the mark before doing the roadblock?
This is something I have noticed too. Do we ever see a team where both members have the mark? This could be an odd coincidence though because JJ and Brendon, Dave and Ralph all have hats pulled low and we don't see Mark's face.
If the marking is part of the roadblock then we know that Mopper does not take the FF.
ETA: Actually it is not part of the roadblock because we know that Ralph and Brendon and probably Dave do the RB. Maybe it's a coincidence.

Art and JJ Working on the Detour
In Detour B, Boarder Patrol Agents Art (left) and JJ (right) must pack and crate ten boxes of ginger and deliver them to the shipping depot in other to receive the next clue from the Head Priest on THE AMAZING RACE.

So guy on left has the mark as well, but not the tall one. Maybe they give the mark before doing the roadblock?
This photo confirms my theory: the bindi is not a part of the FF - we all know that Art and JJ and Davechel are not allowed to take it - (apskip, I truly start to believe that you were right about this), and this is a photo of one of the Detours, so the Head Priest who gives them the next clue at the end is not who made it. So the bindi must be done in the first route marker of the leg, as I stated, along with the clue that contained the first task (Detour/RB) and the FF. And the SB should be before the Detours (Germay) o the RB (Tanzania).
There's a little mistake in my argument: the clue at the first route marker should be a Route Info, that leads the teams to the first task (Detour/RB + FF + SB).

I spec that it could be part of some sort of ceremony, so maybe only one member of the teams received the bindi and the other received the clue.

No...it would depend on the total done by each team member so far in the race, not who did one last.

The bindi is either given to one team member only (seems odd?) OR comes after the speedbump.
Bopper does not have one here (from a speedbump cap):

But Peach, Prophet post another image of Bopper at the SB, where you can see clearly the bindi in his forehead.
http://i.imgur.com/ZUb7x.jpg
-
I don't believe we are 100% sure that other photo is from the SB yet.
I am looking at multiple caps from the SB promo and do NOT see the bindi.
Of course, the angles could be deceptive, but you can see in the photo I posted that there is none.
-
Here is that photo again:
I just reviewed ALL 600+caps from the speedbump preview and do not see that background anywhere.
Nor do I see it at the FF site itself from the shots I have, or the place where Vanessa gets hurt or any of our future episode coir spinning photos.
If Bopper does not have the bindi at the speedbump, then the bindi must be part of the first RI for the Detour/FF as speculated, as B/M would do the SB first.
BUT depending on where that background is (billboard? wall?) ...could tell us whether they do the FF or not. If we can pin that to a later task, they sadly don't take the FF.
-
His arms position (and the shape of the mouth) in both pictures looks similar.

Here is a backlit photo closeup of Mark from the same press pic:

Am I right in thinking that whoever did the last roadblock can't do this one and their partner has to do this one ?
No...it would depend on the total done by each team member so far in the race, not who did one last.
Thank's for the reply , I never really knew that. Is there a certain number each has to complete ?
-
SPEC:
Since the tree background in the preview shot and the press pic look similar, perhaps the SB is right next to the place where the the other teams get their RI clue and bindi.
M/B do their SB, go over to the RI cluebox, get their bindi and clue, and Bopper does an arms in the air YES to see that there is a FF??
Total spec... just trying to make this fit.

Six. That's the reason in the Panama leg of TAR19 the RB clue has the name of the team members who must complete it, because their partners had already reach the maximun amount of RBs allowed.

Yes. Prior to season 6, there were no limits, so there were M/F teams where the women did only one or so.
After season 5 the "Bowling Mom's" rule says that they must be balanced. Usually even+1 which accounts for the # of eps being odd, or a FF, etc. In recent seasons we have seen cluecards that say so and so MUST do this RB.

Not Quite! David and Rachel and Art and JJ both had successful FAST FORWARDs and bypassed the ROADBLOCK in those legs. That means that they should have a 6-5 ROADBLOCK count, as 6-6 is mathematically impossible for them, going into the final leg.

A few interesting things and questions from the last promo:
What is the green thing that Dave has in his hand when they are in the mototaxi? My best guess is something wrapped in a banana leaf?
Note that when Vanessa falls, Ralph puts a route info clue on the ground while he checks on her welfare.
And when Brendon and Rachel are at the hair cutting task, they have a route info in Brendon's hand.
Do racers normally get directed to a FF by a route info?
Since both teams have the route info clue still in their hands, I assume that where they pick up the clue is near the hair cutting task.
I like finding random crew shots in promos - see the camera as Art and JJ run by with the ginger cart?
-
Hmm , i think Brendon is maybe checking the route info clue so they can go back

Apskip, you're absolutely right. The count of RBs made of both teams is the next, according to my notes (and correct me if the count is wrong):
Dave has performed 3 RBs (Argentina-1, Paraguay & Tanzania-2) and Rachel four (Argentina-2, Italia, Germany and India-1).
Art has performed 4 Rbs (Argentina-1, Paraguay, Germany and Tanzania-2) and JJ 3 RBs (Argentina-2, Azerbaijan and India-1).

The previous FF was in Azerbaijan (leg 6), and Davechel won it. So this should be the FF clue of this leg. According to this, they must go to the place of the first task of the race, so this info and the FF info are in the same clue envelope. And this is from the moment when Rachel talks about the extensions of U$S 500. I guess Brendon, after made the decission of not to perfom the FF, is about to read where they had to go and what they had to do there.
And about Davechel, I had no idea. Maybe something the High Priest gave them after the Detour?

We don't know if is the detour , that might be the Envelope.

I was looking at the CBS photo of Davechel in reply 99, and if you see carefully, you can watch that there's a sort of tray with green leaves (with something white on them) next to the Head Priest; and it seems he's giving one of those leaves to Dave. They look mostly as the one that Dave has in the autorickshaw.
SPEC: they could be the next clue.

I had guessimated 10 by my eyeballs earlier in this thread or the last episode thread, so it's a question of how late in the day did Mark and Bopper check in.

I'm sure Chateau will give you a better explanation, but I believe he has software that can estimate the time of day by measuring the shadows in a picture. He's usually pretty accurate.

I would want to keep a few souvenirs...is that accepted?

The shadow man is back!
I think that Mark and Bopper trailing by only three hours is less than we were estimating. Makes things a little more interesting.
The big question is whether or not they hold to their old 12 hour pitstops. If they do it will force an HOO but they frequently adjust pitstop times these days :groan:

It's sketchy, but could Mopper have it at the Speed Bump? :duno:
They definitely get it eventually:
Looking at the sand(which is same as beach sand) and the raised highway tells me that they are close to a major Bridge and still in the coastal area. Also, with respect to the relative location of other teams Art&JJ at Mattanchery and Ralph&Vanessa south of that doing the coir work , i think this speed Bump is somewhere south of Mattanchery near one of the Aroor Bridges(there are several of them and it's not easy to pinpoint which one due to lack of clues).

There are shadows when Mark and Bopper do the Speedbump. Perhaps Chateau can work the magic to predict the time of day this was taken. It would also help determine if it was an extended RB of 24 hours, instead of 12 or 18.
Order of finish last leg was:
Dave/Rachel
Benchel
art/JJ
minute behind them Vanessa/Ralph - on mat together.
Bopper/Mark, approximately 3 hours behind Dave/Rachel.
It's daylight (overcast) when Dave/Rachel receive a greeting and get a clue/dots from high priest which would indicate a 24 hour pit stop unless Hoh. I feel extended pit stop.
Vanessa falling/Ralph could be them racing to go after FF since they aren't to far behind Brenchel at Pitstart.
We know Brenchel arrive at FF, but since it required shaved heads after stacking 150 bales of hay, they opt out of FF before doing anything. That's why they catch up with Vanessa/Ralph, Art/JJ at RB. This would lead me to believe RB was before Detour, but I have no proof of that.
We know Mark/Bopper are doing speed bump and the skies are blue with clouds. It would indicate some time later than the overcast skies when Dave/Rachel started the race leading again to an extended 24 hour pit start time.
Now the big question comes up even though I've been watching faithfully since Season 1, when teams receive the clue that a FF is available, do they know if it is used yet, or do they have to go to FF location to find that out. I think the later.
Would Mark/Bopper feel that Brenchel or Vanessa/Ralph went for it so would not even try, or would they take a chance?

We know Brenchel arrive at FF, but since it required shaved heads after stacking 150 bales of hay, they opt out of FF before doing anything.

The hay bail was

Thank you for pointing this out georgiapeach!

I guess you refer with "dots" to the bindi in team members foreheads. If it's right, you're wrong. The High Priest is giving a clue to teams after they completed Detour "B", and there's a cap of Art performig this Detour with the bindi, and from Rachel & Bendon on the other Detour when you can also see the bindi in her forehead. So the bindi is previous to their meeting.
The hay stacking was the FF that Dave & Rachel won in Azerbaiijan (leg 6), this FF requires only that members of the teams shave their heads (as in TAR2, TAR5 and TAR7).
I also think - as you do - that RB is probably the first task of the leg, the same way it happened in the two previous FF of the season (Italy and Azerbaijan), and Rachel facial gesture at the RB could be because she had an argument with Brendon about the reasons of not doing the FF (remember all the drama in Italy's leg), or for being catched up by all the other teams behind them at the RB.
According to this, you're wrong with the spec that Vanessa's fall was in route to the FF: you can see her in the clips walking without problems at the RB.
About Mark & Bopper, if the SB is before the first task, they could take a shot on the FF when they return with the pack, if they saw all the others teams still doing the RB.
And the only way to know if a FF is taken, is to going to the location of it. Remember Nick and Vicki in Season 17, and their confusion with the "Fast Forward taken" post in the door of the FF's place, after Nat & Kat won it.

Chateau,
I have detailed my rationale for deriving a markedly different date , Dec. 14 vs. your Dec. 12, for the beginning of leg 10 in India. Please see the AR20 Transport thread for that information. I realize that the impact of a 2 day change in when those photos took place is not really material for the time of day analysis.
-
Actually, I used December 12th because of what I found in the Transport tread last night. That and my error of getting locked on 12 and forgetting that they would have landed the next day! :groan:
So I should have used, and would have used if I was awake, December 13th for the Solar calcs.
And, you're right, two days is not going to change my time estimates especially that close to December 20th when all the variations bottom out.
But how come there is a one-day disagreement in the timeline? Dr. Rox said there that they left Africa on December 12th. I'm curious to go see what you've come up with.
-
Okay, so we agree that the first India leg finished up on December 13th. That's what those pit stop checkin pictures are for. So the date assumption I used is one day off. And that error came from my not paying attention when I went to collect the date.
What happens on December 14th is the checkin for the second India leg. And we don't have pictures of that yet!
-
Chateau, if you have a chance before the episode airs, this might be the week to see if you can place the time of day for some of the vid caps of the various teams at the tasks for this upcoming leg (especially Mark and Bopper and some of the other teams who are performing the tasks outside in daylight. It might tell us whether there was an HOO used or just an odd-length pit stop, since all of the tasks appear to be in daylight.

First, I agree with Dr. Rox on leaving Arusha on the morning of Dec. 12. This does assume an extended pit stop in Tanzania, which I consider to be an eminently reasonable assumption.
A more interesting assumption is whether there is another extended pit stop in India. There may or may not be. Since I assumed in my timeline that there was no extended pit stop in the Kochi area, the implications of that are to reach Japan such that departure on Dec. 18 and arrival on Dec. 18 is what happens.
If you assume that there is an extended pit stop in the Kochi area and also an extended pit stop in Osaka (which I consider based on past experience to be a no-brainer), then the departure date and arrival date is Dec. 19.
-
I actually thought Leg 9 would have been a "To be continued leg" since Leg 10 is in the same city, but then Phil said it was a "Non-Elimination Leg". Is it possible that they continued racing since the PitStop 9 times for most racers were in the morning? I'm not good at lights/shadows, but is this something RFF has already considered? That instead of an extended pitstop, to have no pit stop rest time?
-
That is what a keep on racing leg is, so no, we would not have had confessionals then, and we would have known.
-

Thanks for the confirmation georgiapeach, so they will be taking a rest period.

Great eye WP! The FF clue has to be from this episode, as racers are required to turn in all clues before leaving the Pitstop.
peach, you beat me to it. yes the clues are all from this episode. all teams are indeed required to turn everything in. it also lightens their load as they travel. imagine if they had to keep all their clues with them? CONFUSING!!
I would want to keep a few souvenirs...is that accepted?
NOPE!!! They do not get to keep a single thing from the race.

Sure they do. Maybe not supposed to, but oh yes.

In order to get to Japan for the next leg, the best option is for the teams to catch a flight via Singapore either from Cochin(COK) or Trivandrum(TRV). Tiger Airways and Silk Airways flies from both cities. Silk Air seems to have daily flights from COK, but every other day from TRV. So I guess the departing Airport most probably is COK. They could also connect through BOM, MAA or CMB from COK or TRV, but COK has more outbound flights compared to TRV. BOM and CMB also have direct flights to Tokyo, but not many, so teams may not choose that route. The best route for the team is thru SIN, due to large number of flights to TYO.

JACOBSK68,
You are a newbie and have already established yourself as a valuable resource, so my remarks here have been tempered by that. We have an AR20 TRANSPORT for issues like this. Use of a past leg's thread is not recommended. Airline information belongs in the AR20 TRANSPORT thread
On the specifics of what you indicate, let's start with the departure airport. With tasks reported to be not more than 35 miles from Kochi, the chances of departure from Trivandrum airport are minimal as it's schedule in most directions tends to mirror that of COK.
On the specifics of connecting cities, I did a very broad search of possibilities (I might have missed some but not important ones). I concluded that this is the optimal route from Kochi to Osaka, with actual flight times adjusted to reflect Dec. 17 based on the high probability that there was an extended pit stop in India as well as one in Osaka:
KOCHI to OSAKA FLIGHTS on Dec. 17, 2011
COK BOM AI682 0800 1015 or 9W2112 0850 1037
17 Dec. BOM BKK 9W68 1315 1921
17 Dec. BKK KIX TG622 2322 0632+1
If you can come up with actual flight combinations for Dec. 17 departing from Kochi not before 630am and arriving Osaka in an earlier time zone before 630am (actual total transit time 20.5 hours), please demonstrate it.
The problem with your hypothesis lies in India with few flights Kochi to Chennai and poor connections from there to Singapore. The fact that there are a plethora of flights SIN KIX is not very important in the greater scheme of things.
-
Maybe Chateau could use his software that can estimate the time of day and apply it to the caps from this episode and give us some estimated time's that the teams are doing these task's. :please: :please:
-
In order to do that he needs the EXACT location first. I think we only have the old spice market for sure, right?
And it isn't software so much as his wonderful skills!

Here u go chateau , according to jacobsk68 it is in Mattancheri, Fort Cochin
-
Okay, so where is this spice market?
The spice Market is in Mattanchery in the town of Fort Cochin which is to the west of Cochin (Kochi). The pit stop, ie. Bolgatty Palace ,on the Bolgatty Island is on the east of Fort Cochin. Most of the buildings there are very old and built by the dutch when they came for spice trading sometime in the 17th century. Kerala is where the Black pepper came from and there was a huge market for that.

the Spicemarket is on the "bazaar road" and extends into "Jew town road"

Had a message from a lurker with some good observations: What do y'all think??
I have looked at the picture of Rachel and Dave in the pedicab as closely as I can and it looks like there is something inside the leaf that Dave is holding. Could it be the flowers that the priest sprinkled in per the CBS photos? I have pulled Rachel in as close as I can in the pedicab. I am not good with this stuff but I do not see a red mark on her forehead. I even used a magnifying glass lol! So, if they already left the priest with the leaf with the flower I would have expected Rachel to have the bindi. I also think those are yellow clues on the tray the other man is holding behind the priest. I am confused if they get the bindi there and I am just not seeing it on Rachel, or if they are on their way to the priest in the picture in the pedicab.

I'm thinking that the two teams who are not seen with the bindi are the same two teams who cannot attempt the fast forward.
nvm I think Art might have it in the press pic. Dave and Rachel obviously don't have it and I can't think of why. It has to happen before the fast forward but probably after the speed bump. Maybe they wipe theirs off?

That's what I thought! I just didn't have the guts to say it. It might be similar to the chiaski in Argentina Leg 2.

Hindu priests give a blessing called 'prasadam' wrapped in a banana leaf. They get that and the clue.

prasadam is a greeting ,usually a sugary thing that people eat afterwards. Not a Hindu, so I only know little bit about the Hindu traditions

What an unusual leg. The speedbump obviously took much more than 10-25 minutes; so that effectively put Mark and Bopper more than 4 hours behind by the time they got to the priest at the temple for the blessing and the clue. And based on the pit stop departure times and Chateau's excellent estimate of the arrival times at the end of the last leg, it was a 9 hour pit stop.
Not only did they bring back truthfully one of the most notorious fast forwards ever, they acknowledged it as a Switchback; so we now know the switchback was not a one time thing two seasons ago.
I was surprised by how completely Art-JJ slipped behind the other three teams over the course of this leg.
And I can't image how a team gets to the final mat and not complete all the tasks; clearly we're in for a first ever next week.

And I can't image how a team gets to the final mat and not complete all the tasks; clearly we're in for a first ever next week.
Do you mean 19 hour pit stop?
And 5 seasons ago?
Additionally, I think the speed bump did not take that long, about only 20 minutes. We also do not know how close the finish was due to the Editors.

What an amazing episode!
1. A switchback to the most epic FF which a team takes and gets eliminated.
2. Hard, physically wearing tasks that break teams down
3. Crazy team fights
4. Not knowing the whole time who will go home
I am really loving this season. We haven't seen this kind of combo of epic tasks and a huge casting success since TAR14!

I was thinking the same exact thing!
Also, I am usually not a fan of India episodes since India is so over-used, but I have LOVED both of the India episodes. Hands down the best India episodes of any season (in my opinion) and the 2nd and 3rd best episodes as well (1st = Paraguay, 2nd = India 2, 3rd = India 1)

I love getting back to difficult legs, unlike the weak S19 ones!

+ the episode didn't seem rushed which was a huge plus for me.
I think this comes from that there are only 5 teams plus a FF; there are not as many teams to film.

i just looked at a christmas photo album of bopper and he is nowhere to be seen so perhaps he is laying low.
It all makes sense now...haha and thanks to google chrome being able to zoom in on the fast forward clue.
-
The head-shaving Fast Forward did not have enough good luck this time around, to save the last likeable team of this race. Not sure who I will root for now.
I know it was good luck for Uchenna & Joyce and the Richards, but not so much for Richard & Joey and now, Mark & Bopper.
As much as I like them, I'm not sure if I would want them back for the 3rd All-stars, with Mark's motion sickness and Bopper's bad knee.

I thought the German episode was easily one of the better ones, it needed navigation skill in that it moved through different areas as well with the teams driving something which has been badly missing from most of the season. There were switches in position all the time because of mistakes by different teams, and I thought the end was unpredictable too.

for those still tracking the last Cochin Leg here's some info
the temple they went to get the first clue and also the location for the tiger paint event
was "Chandiroor" which is south of Aroor , which i originally thought. (google map search :Chandiroor, Alappuzha, Kerala, India)
The Coir weaving was at "Pattanakkad" in "Cherthala" further south of "Chandiroor".(google map search: Pattanakkad , Alappuzha, Kerala, India)
From Pattanakkad, the team had to travel back North to Fort Kochi, to get to the ferry , where JJ & Art had the "Ginger" task. That's almost 17 miles. Not sure why the teams didn't use a taxi Car, instead of the auto-rickshaw. Locals normally don't use the richshaw to travel that far. One of the teams could have used a taxi car to get ahead of "Dave/Rachel" to the pit stop.
route from Pattanakkad to Vypeen Ferry terminal:

The TEMPLE is right next to the The Palace Convention Centre in Chandiroor

So how far apart are the Pit Stops...........a mile maybe?

After looking at the videos on CBS , i think they are staying at the "Malabar House", Fort Kochi, which has the signature door lock as seen here (http://www.olafkrueger.com/en/cgallery/aimages/cat2/cat2-44/image364.html#8)(http://www.olafkrueger.com/en/cgallery/aimages/cat2/cat2-44/image364.html#8) So the current and prior pit stops are about 2 miles apart if you travel by boat or geographically.
If they are indeed at "Malabar House" then they would have taken the ferry back to Fort Kochi after the pit stop.

My apologies. I didnt mean what hotels.........but how far apart the actual Pit Stop Mats are.......they sure appear very close to me on Google Earth. If I understand what you said.....it appears the teams went about 17 miles south and then turned around and came back north and ended up about a mile west of where they started.

you are right about that. Leg 10 pit stop is 1.8 miles west of the Leg 9 pit stop, but separated by water.

Awesome Jacob!! Thank you SO much, you made this leg come alive for us!! :hearts:
-
so basically, emotional rachel's decision not to cut her $500 extensions and the rest of her hair cost her and brendon $10,000 each...not like she cares anyways since she won $1 million from bb.
-
500, 000...not a million. And in the insider video she had a good point...she would be going back to RL in 5 days and needed a job...in her line of work no hair might not be good!

No problem Peach. Happy to help with the details. Never thought they will do 2 legs in Kerala.

Still looking for the Pit Stop hotel/Pit Start! At the start of Leg 11 we see Dave/Rachel crossing the street to get to Akbar Holidays (which is on the west side of MG Road), so that probably means they got off their taxi on the southbound lane, eliminating a lot of the waterways we need to look! Still can't match it up just yet though... :gaah:
Suspecting Cherai, but I don't have enough evidence?

Hey, Neobie, could it be this the background of Art & JJ caption? It's a traveller's pic from the Cherai Beach Resort Hotel.

And I found something else looking at the picture I posted previously, something we can watch at the PitStart on the leg when Rachel & Dave are opening the clue.
Looks like a match to me.

Well it really does look like a match to me also. It appears that the Cherai Beach Resort has two phases. The older one on the south (left) side and the new one on the north (right) side. Looks like the PitStart for leg 11 was in the northern side of the resort looking back towards the south. The same in the interview scene with Art and JJ. There appears to be some kind of boat slip or boat channel between the to phases of the resort from the photos. This is not apparently in the satellite view on GE.
You can see the boat slip in the background of both the Art/JJ interview and the photo of the Pit Start with Rachel/Dave.
-
It does look quite close, but...
1. I can't find the Manichitrathazhu door in the other interviews or a closer picture of the railings (showing the right thing) to confirm Cherai Beach Resort.
2. There's a large concrete drain and a blue-roofed building in the Art/JJ screencap that can't be explained.
3. The shadow for Dave/Rachel's departure is in the wrong place. At 1.51pm their shadows should be pointing to the left hand side of the screen, not the right hand side (the lamppost has the clearest shadow). The image isn't flipped; Dave is wearing his watch on his (usual) left arm.
4. When you search "Manichitrathazhu" and "Cherai" you find exactly the kind of door we're looking for! It's a video game called "The Dark Hills of Cherai" though...

I found some other pics of the railways of Cherai Beach Resort, much closer than the first; and I have to admit that you're probably right about your suspicions of not being this place as the PitStart.
