The cap suggests a busy intersection with a central post and a large road sign. No street view but Godowlia crossing looks promising; not tied to it, though. Fwiw, according to this blog (http://varanasizinda.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=233:feb-11&catid=3:varanasi-blog&Itemid=215) gobar pathna is the name for cow-chip manufacturing. The past 4 teams that have been eliminated are from season 14, since there are 5 team all-stars from that season. It's most likely that Kisha & Jen will be the next to go (bye bye season 14 teams) or end up in the final 3 in the end.
Well that's my opinion, hmm... have to wait 2 weeks for the new episode.

I am pretty sure it's a FF. I've looked around the site and there don't seemed to be any other "materials" or "tools" for about 7 teams to all attempt the task together.
HOWEVER, when the girls were shown 'slapping' the 'dung cakes' on the part of the wall, there's 6 to 7 more at the back which seemed to be undone. Maybe they just have to be done with one part of the wall to be done with the FF? :duno:

I don't know what you're thinking, but it's obvious Kisha and Jen are the first ones there? (if the walls partitions are indeed different stations) None of the walls have been "plastered' with dung cakes and they were just barely starting on the task.

It seems too small for the racers to move about too. That's why i posted my queries. :(
As I posted in like reply ten to this thread - it's looks like a FF because of the lack of space as well as the obscure location (think heading shaving in Season 7)

I've been looking at Google Earth this evening as well and I'm stumped. But I'm not a Google Earth Master, :future merely an apprentice. :bow: Like you say, the beach and ghats are nearly indistinguishable. There are a LOT of photos and panorama shots which are real helpful. There's so many that I can't look at all of them. The whole central portion of Varanasi along the Ganges River looks like it's lined with ghats and stairs going down to the water. I can't find an area with open beach like the screen cap suggests unless you're on the north or south end of Varanasi. My gut feeling is it's probably south of the Godowlia Chowk area about a mile or two in the south end of Varnasi. I can't find the temple in screen cap 1 either and that seems like it should be possible to identify. Even if I do find it, it's not clear that temple is where Jen/Kisha are plastering dung on the wall.

Prior to the previews, I had a suspicion that Zev and Justin would be going next. But them giving Zev such a huge edit in the previews... Now I'm not sure. Because in the previous preview, they focused on Luke, and he and Margie were eliminated. So I'm thinking they won't do the same for back-to-back previews? But of course it's just a guess! Can't wait for the next episode, bummer that it's two weeks later hee.

If we assume its later in the day (which is a pretty big assumption) with the sun setting, the dung task should be on the east side of the Ganges. The beach area around the Ram Nagar fort and the pontoon bridge look likely.
And the fort would make a good pitstop....

I think that it should be the judge too. If he/she was a local bystander, shouldn't he/she be on the ledge too? And like any other tasks (FF or Detour), I think there should be someone there to say okay to their 'masterpiece'.

They were... for the activities that had people in shops for a few seconds, and on the streets directing a bus.
There was a distinct lack of bystanders at the painting task, except for the band, and did they just happen to pick that spot to be playing that day? I doubt it.

Couzy.......I am not here to argue with you. If you perceive a lack of bystanders at the painting task, so be it. All you have to do is take a look BEHIND the band, especially in the close ups with Ron. BVM delights in having people around distracting the racers when they are all tense, trying to do tasks. I have worked on a lot of "closed sets" in the past and the "outdoor sets" for TAR are anything but closed. Btw, you were right.....there was a distinct absence of bystanders at the painting task........none of them in this photo!!!

That's a good question...The caps this season have really been telling a story, most have been significant.
I wonder about those steps (or place) where he is sitting? IF that is white marble, then that is almost certainly at a temple. If we can find some vids of OUR temple, perhaps we can spot a similar place. :yess:

It probably isn't the same guy -- notice the traditional "untouchable paint markings on the intro guy's forehead, and the episode guy has an orange turban covering his entire forehead.
My guess is that the episode guy is either a "decoration" at a task or the cluegiver. The robes would certainly allow clue envelopes to be hidden.

Here's a map (http://varanasi.nic.in/phototalk/loc_and_maps.htm) of the ghats; Raj ghat is the one next to the mandir. I don't know, there are a few points in its favor as the gobar pathna site, but just as many points can be put against it: I'll keep looking. I've attached another cap of the task; what I thought might be structures or water is probably people laying out their laundry to dry, a common practice. The site may actually be, as WP suggests, on the other side of the river (pano here (http://www.360cities.net/image/ram-nagar-fort-along-the-ganges-river-varanasi#158.20,-4.90,70.0)).

Yes of course. I think it boils down to the fact that it isn't all that easy to get out of Varanasi.
Delhi and Mumbai are two flight options.
The best lights into Vienna in the early morning are from Delhi...
SO IF all the flights into Delhi were fulll from Varanasi, and teams had to go V>Mumbai>Delhi, then the timing is possible. But makes much better sense to go V>Delhi>Vienna. And IIRC, apskip found some Bangkok routings that also work.
And while I found the source for the Delhi sighting of the Cowboys completely reliable ...this one seems not so much. Not enough to rule it out, just...funny. :duno:

These remind me of water taxis. Cheap way for people to get back and forth across the river. The big modern bridges and the pontoon bridge are really at the extreme ends of the waterfront in Varanasi shoreline. Do our teams have to ride in a water taxi?

Having looked at several hundred pictures of Varanasi in the last couple of days, I can say that those row boats are very typical of Varanasi. They are everywhere along the Ganges. I'm sure they are used as water taxis, cargo transportation, tour boats, funeral boats or just about anything else you could think of. If the teams do go to the east bank of the Ganges for the wall umm... plastering task, a boat like that would be the most efficient way, as well as being telegenic. Varanasi looks like a fascinating place to visit. I doubt I'll ever go there, but if I ever get to India, I'll definitely make an effort to get to Varanasi.
I haven't looked for forts, but since it's in the intro, that would be a likely place for a pit stop.
Clutch mentions the incense being from the detour in Lijiang. I can't remember it that specifically, but I seem to recall seeing it somewhere in the Lijiang leg. However, I may be recalling the speculation here from before that episode.
I agree with the others about the bull being in Varanasi. They are everywhere in Varanasi, at least in the pictures I looked through. In the roads and streets, in the narrow alleys, even along the ghats and banks along the river. No doubt making dung a overly abundant and cheap building material.

To go through Mumbai perhaps they are leaving India, on the way to Austria. This sighting was on 12/5. He did identify three teams.
He does seem a little odd though, once again no mention of being in India, tweeting kevjumba (what's with that) I don't know.

Here is what I had on the PRIMARY TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS thread from Varanasi to Delhi on 12/4:
IT336 1358 1521 9W724 1530 1707 SG119 1615 1750
Flight from Delhi to Vienna on Saturday 12/4: OS34 0254 0556
This could be off by one day if there was an extended pit stop. It is trivial for teams to fly from Mumbai to Delhi. From 1300 to 2100 on a Saturday (Dec. 4), I counted 17 nonstop flights.
The problem is getting to Mumbai from Varanasi. There is only one flight AI695 1330 1530. There are 3 flights from Varanasi to Delhi, so my bet is that most teams went direct to Delhi.
As to going through Bangkok, there is an equivalent to OS 34 above, OS26 nonstop from Bangkok to Vienna 2355 0535+1. However, getting from Varanasi to Bangkok takes two connections (which is 3 total to get to Vienna)

Without going back to look, I believe that in other seasons with stops in India, teams frequently had to get to Mumbai to get out of India, and often had to go to Dehli from elsewhere to do that. Conversely when teams were on a west-to-east route through India, teams often had to fly into Mumbai in order to connect to other locations in India.
Bottom line: except when Mumbai is the destination, teams often have had to fly in or out of Mumbai to get elsewhere.

Why talk in generalities when we have the specifics available. The flight listings I utilize have this as the top 7 flights from Mumbai to Vienna: via Delhi (all on OS34) 4 via Dubai (on OS840) 2 via London 1
Combine that with the information above that there are 3 flights from Varanasi to Delhi and only 1 from Varanasi to Mumbai.
What are the most logical conclusions? I conclude that although it is possible that teams flew through Mumbai to get to Vienna, most of them would have probably gone through Delhi either directly or less likely via Mumbai.

Remember that only two or three teams were possibly seen there so the remaining teams may have gone on a more mainstream route directly through Delhi. So apskip's info doesn't really discount the sighting. It seems that it is yet to be proven right or wrong.

Next to the incense is the letter "maa" in Hindi or Sanskrit. But you can find those in Buddhist temples as well, so not that helpful.
And while the dung can be used as building material, the little cakes they're making are probably going to be used as a source of fuel. In place of burning wood in a stove, people burn the dung cakes or whatever you want to call them. Always give the food a uniquely special taste.

Ron and Christina and Gary and Mallory were (maybe) seen in Mumbai. If all these sightings are confirmed then the goths or Zev and Justin would be gone this time. I wouldn't really be surprised at this as I would expect those two to go next anyway.
I personally consider the trotters sighting in Brazil as slightly questionable because it seems that all teams would have had to spend that night in Brazil in order to make it on the same flight to Miami.

Okay...Something slightly odd!
In rewatching this week episode 6...it seems that in the clip with Phil describing the two Detours...that at least some of these are in VARANASI, and not Kolkata!
And our Hindu holy man from the Intro caps also makes an appearance.

You mean the highway 36 bridge? The highway 98 bridge does not look like that at all and neither does the railroad bridge. I can't find any pics of the 36 bridge to the north but that has to be it.

What I found interesting is that the suspension bridge is in the newest design that only has been built in a handful of places around the world. We first saw that design during TAR 9 in Greece, at night, btw.

The story is too long to quote here. I tend to think the one from Varanasi is more likely to have political ads.
I agree. I think those two caps are very much likely to be from Varanasi mainly because of the use of Hindi. In Kolkata, you would expect mostly Bengali and English. Signs in Hindi would be rare. I also thought Christina speaking a little Hindi last episode was not necessary. They're just as likely to know your basic English greetings and what not as Hindi ones in West Bengal.

Just a comment on the poo thing... I am not sure it's a FF because Jen was in dark colored pants with a light colored top 3/4 sleeve top. Kisha had on shorts or capri's with a dark blue short sleeve top. But there is a shot of someone in light colored pants (Khaki or cream), rolled up long sleeve blue shirt and their skin looks to be white.
I don't think it's a RB either because both Kisha and Jen are seen doing it. I vote for detour option.

It says Priya Hair Dresser backwards just like the other image and the letters in the other sign also match up... or in a mirror image wise. I didn't spend time trying to identify that temple, but it should be easier than finding a hair dresser shop. (I can try reading the other signs, but them being mirror imaged is a little hard. The store next door is something Gents Parlor)
It's a Shiva temple as there's a Nandi (the bull) outside. I am sure it's just a stock scene, but no harm in pointing it out.

I believe I found a match to this shrine - it's described as a durga shrine (however no closer to finding where in varanasi it is located!! :umn: ):

I tried embedding it, but it didn't work, but I see that you guys got it. It feels silly now that I know where it is, because there are so many images of that intersection and that temple.
In the "Durga Shrine" image it says "tores" in Hindi on the other side of the pillar. The "sa" is cut off. I wish I could read the top of it! (It of course says "stores" in English, so this information is useless.)
In the image that I linked, there's a big banner sign pointing toward Shri Jaipur Murti Bhandar... a place that sells murtis. But that to me looks like an actual shrine. There are small ones like that in a lot of places everywhere. Sometimes people get them made just so they can preserve their building from road expansions or what not since religious places cannot be overtaken by an Indian type of eminent domain.

I did a little initial research on the subjects of milk farms in the Varanasi area and thus far, I'm not finding much on actual farms with locations, but I do have a few nuggets of information. Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi appears to be the local research facility for agriculture in Varanasi and they have opened their own milk farm in February 2011, but that's after when TAR was there, so I doubt that's where the racers were sent. I found some brief descriptions of studies they have done on the local dairy industry. Despite the large number of cows wandering the streets in Varanasi, it appears that the milk farms are just as likely to have water buffaloes for milk as cows. Goats are a possibility as well. I imagine all would eat hay. I also read that many of the milk farms are landless. I suppose that means that they are just in a small enclosed area and don't spend time in pastures. That could easily be anywhere inside the urban area of Varanasi. I'll keep looking for locations and addresses in case we get footage of the milk farms later on, but so far, I haven't found much initially.

The roadblock. Not only does it always come first these days, the first clue after arriving is a route info found at a tonga stand and it tells them to do the RB.

I think Ron/Christina might be going home. Since I thin carrying Hay to milk farm is slower than the other task,and it seems Jen/Kisha is safe in this leg and other people have gone,since other walls were done and the sun was setting? So I think it was quite late.

The hay to milk farm task might be slower for some teams, but for the Cowboys and the Trotters, I suspect it would be faster than the other task.
We've seen this before this season, some tasks would be faster for some teams and slower for other teams. It's an interesting twist on detour design, that is for sure.

This article (http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-04-01/varanasi/29369625_1_modern-gyms-akharas-wrestlers), published just a few days ago, claims that there less than a dozen akharas in all of Varanasi. That "beach" certainly looks wide.

Could the daily farm be part of the Rajghat Rural Centre? I don't have any pictures and those streets that FT and BE are on don't look to be near Raj Ghat. I only thought of it because of earlier speculation that the cow dung patties task was near Raj Ghat and this place is located 200 meters off that bridge.

I just want us to be cautious...RB's and Detours can flip flop first...and the light in the boats looks later to me. And supposedly the boats lead to the Detours...but that could also be possible if they use them again to cross over to the fort for the Pitstop as well??
Also cap 13 with K/J crossing the stones looks as though they could be coming from a boat up a ghat as well, and we know that shrine area with the holy man is right around the corner from one of the main Ghats...so who knows? :lol:
The watch shots I posted looked like to my eye to perhaps be 1040>1130, but can't be sure...

The sign is in Urdu and not Hindi... I did take Arabic for a semester, but I can only identify a few letters here and can't really make out what exactly it saying. The last two letters are "ka" and small "ha" It probably does mean that it's in the Muslim area of Varanasi? That's where all the textile stuff is made. If I knew what some of the options were I think I could probably make out what it was saying. I'll try harder in a bit!

I think the analysis that Ron and Cristina are later than Jet and Cord is correct. There's no reason for local production to refill the hay bales, and in the R/C cap you can clearly see that the front row is down to one bale, and the row behind that seems to be done to two. OTOH, there seems to be nearly full rows of hay bales behind Jet and Cord; and it seems to me that the sun is at a lower (i.e., earlier time) angle.
Also notice that Cord came prepared; he's got a glove on one of his hands. I can't tell about Jet, but it's possible he is wearing a glove on one hand as well.

Could the team making the 'costly mistake' be one of the teams doing the hay detour? (Most likely Ron/Christina) Cause it directly involves traveling the streets, which is part of the detour, and also 'another racer' making a desperate 'plunge' could be Vyxsin coming from Kent when he says "Are you insane? It looks like the top part of the tree in the background of the picture with K/J is in the sunlight. That, and the general light level, makes me think it is early morning and the sun is just rising.
That would mean that they are way ahead of K/V. But it does not mean that K/V must be dead last, it is possible that K/J are way ahead of everybody here.

Concerning the hay bales........there are only 7 teams left. If they each had to carry two bales to the milking station....there are plenty of bales in that tent. Production would only need to have 14 hay bales there if all teams did that side of the detour.
Just a reminder on flights........we know teams were in the airport in Kolkata the afternoon of Dec 2, procurring tickets and teams were all at Kingfisher Airlines. Connections from Kolkata to Varanasi are as follows:
Flight from Kolkata to Delhi......evening of Dec 2. Kingfisher flgiht at 2055 arriving in Delhi at 2348.
Connecting flights from Delhi to Varanasi.........arriving in the morning of Dec 3. IT231 0930-1045 9W723 1030-1145 (there is also another flight at this time on Indian Airlines) SG114 1420-1605

Concerning the hay bales........there are only 7 teams left. If they each had to carry two bales to the milking station....there are plenty of bales in that tent. Production would only need to have 14 hay bales there if all teams did that side of the detour.
Just a reminder on flights........we know teams were in the airport in Kolkata the afternoon of Dec 2, procurring tickets and teams were all at Kingfisher Airlines. Connections from Kolkata to Varanasi are as follows:
Flight from Kolkata to Delhi......evening of Dec 2. Kingfisher flgiht at 2055 arriving in Delhi at 2348.
Connecting flights from Delhi to Varanasi.........arriving in the morning of Dec 3. IT231 0930-1045 9W723 1030-1145 (there is also another flight at this time on Indian Airlines) SG114 1420-1605
This information might help in analysing the shadows in the screencaps.

In detour A teams must make 25 traditional fuel patties out of buffalo manure, then slap them on the wall to dry in the sun..... :
Gary and Mallory and Kisha and Jen make out "patties" or meatballs.....

After someone tweeted to Phil their shock at Kent & Vyxsin U-Turning Jaime & Cara right in front of them, Phil responded with "Yes, things get very interesting between K & V and the other teams."

G/M are passing the Prabhu ghat heading north (photo source (http://worldvisitguide.com/oeuvre/photo_ME0000097570.html)). Prabhu is only 7 ghats north of Tulsi, so it would be reasonable to assume that they pick up the Detour boats right outside the akhara.

According to a post a couple pages back I think Jen/Kisha, Flight Time/Big Easy and Jet/Cord are the only teams confirmed to have survived this leg. Any of the other teams could have been eliminated.
Based on the previews and all I think Ron/Christina were most likely the ones eliminated, but that's just my own spec.

Just curious... In the screen shot of Zev & Justin at the PS, they have the paint on their foreheads. Did any of the other teams have paint on their foreheads in the post leg PS interviews? I don't remember seeing G/M with paint on their foreheads. What could this mean?

The idea has been subtly floated for a while now that the goths will be eliminated here. It makes me think that they won't but they did sort of hint at Margie and Luke and Mel and Mike's elims. It's hard to figure all the possibilities of hints and reverse psychology type stuff.

At least they proved to some who had negative opinions about them that they can work together as a team without quarrelling.

From the viewing party, they said that the jump into the Ganges and playing tugboat Vyxsin saved them because the boat would take too long and there was only a few minutes between their arrival and Ron & Tina.

The goths are literally doing a Dan and Andrew... pretty shocking for an Allstar team who did so well the first time round and didn't come in worst than fifth place.

Actually neither shocking nor ironic to me........There were eleven teams that raced damn good in their seasons. They were all consistant and competant racers. As the premise for this season of TAR, they got eliminated by a quirk.
So far every team eliminated were involved in the free code word for the very first roadblock......that is the pattern that interest me. Only two teams left that didnt solve the naval flag puzzle by themselves left, Kent/Vyxin and Flight Time and Big Easy.
As far as the flight from Kolkata to Varanasi, there were maybe a dozen flights from Kolkata to Delhi that afternoon/evening. It is obvious from comments by Flight Time and Big Easy, that they flew to Delhi on a flight by themselves. I am thinking that teams were scattered among those dozen flights. The last Kolkata flight to Delhi arrived in Delhi about midnight. I assume teams left the Delhi airport and found a cheap place to sleep. Then went back to the airport the next morning. All teams except Jet/Cord were on Kingfisher flight IT231, 930-1045. Jet/Cord were on 9W723, 1030-1145. That is the only way I can resolve the fact that the Kingfisher group never saw J/C or vice versa.

I have a different perspective on this. Teams had the opportunity based on using the airport Kingfisher Airways booking service to take any flight from about 5pm on, yet all except maybe Nate/Herb and Jet/Cord waited for the late Kingfisher flight. Why? I bet it's was due to other flights being unavailable or to being steered to IT604 2038 2352 CCU DEL. Those same booking agents put those teams plus Nate/Herb on the first flight (which happened to be IT608 0809 1120 Kingfisher DEL VNS.

Your assessment is very possible apskip, no arguments here. I just got a different sense from re-watching the episode.
We know from the spoiler guy that Jet/Cord and Gary/Mallory were inside of security at 310 pm on Dec 2 @ the Kolkata Airport. He also saw Kisha/Jen and another team outside at Kingfisher getting tickets. From the episode we know now the other team was Zev/Justin. Kent/Vyxin were at a travel agency away from the airport getting their tickets. Ron/Christina got their tickets before K/J and Z/J and left to go eat dinner and spend some quality father/daughter time. Approx 2 hours later the Globes show up and from their comments, they didnt see any other teams in the airport, but they knew they would "catch up." I took this to mean at the airport in Delhi for the morning flight to Varanasi. Certainly all the teams that booked at Kingfisher could have been all scattered out in the airport.
As to Jet/Cord.......I think Jet Airways kept them on Jet Airways flights. I never get the sense that they ever say another team till they got to the RB in Varanasi. There are no scenes of teams camping out in the airport in Delhi....so that is why I think they were all split up. Just a hunch on my part. I dont think the Cowboys saw a team from the Pit Stop Start till the RB in Varanasi. I would have thought if they did, they would have found out about the earlier Kingfisher flight from other teams.
There were 11 flights from Kolkata to Delhi between 3 pm and 1030 pm on Dec 2. Since all these racers are pretty sharp by now, I just think they would have gotten to Delhi as soon as possible and not wait around in Kolkata and let so many flights go by. The Kingfisher flight on Dec 2 from Kolkata to Delhi was delayed about 38 minutes as it was. The teams had already been through major snafus on the flights to Aus and Japan.
When the teams were a the Delhi airport the next morning to fly to Varanasi...........it just seem like from their comments that they hadnt seen each other either...............anyway.......not really a big deal. Maybe the CBS webmonkeys will put up the Insider vidoes and we might get some clues from that, similiar to the spending the night in the hostels in Sydney waiting to fly to Broken Hill.

That makes a lot of sense, Peach......I wouldnt be suprised if that restaurant that Ron/Christina went to, was in Delhi too.

They were shown going into Arsalan (http://www.arsalanrestaurant.com/branches1.html), not far from the pit stop. Not an expensive restaurant, but still...an odd decision for racers.

Sawaika Handbloom (over Phil's shoulder) is close to the ghat-side of Dasaswamedh road, so I figure "sadhu park" is somewhere in the circled area. And the tonga, as others had speculated, was right at Godowlia chowk.
