Then I'm going to be relieved I wasn't crazy about Belize.

Then I'm going to wonder how they do this in about 22 days?

Hey give the kid a break ! OK I split this all into the one thread and was updating the spoiler board  (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,12520.0.html), first post.

Now I can take some blame here because that one source told me that they were leaving on the 7th but changed to the 2nd or 3rd and thats what set us off running around in the wrong direction but after peach and I sorted it out it was looking like LAX to Ireland was the real start and thats why we started this (http://forum.realityfanforum.com/index.php/topic,13694.0.html) thread especially with us knowing there were 2 less episodes .... Whatever it was fixed before it started so all is GREAT in rff land and were off to a fresh start :jumpy:!

I can't read the french, but this (http://burkinamorbihan.free.fr/) is the Ouaga statue.

OK, got it. It's Naba Koom (http://www.mairie-ouaga.bf/Vie%20Municipale/Placefemme.htm), located just outside the railway station.

I can read, speak and translate French pretty well. Here is a translation of THIS above:

This association was born with the will of the team of professionals in the rural world of the southeast Morbihan

Producers
Trainers
Technicians
Researchers
University Students

With the partnership of the closing of the world of Cartenoir and its handicapped workers.

Its initiatives:

Action accompaning the development of long-term agriculture benefitting a great number of inhabitants of TAPOA (300,000 in 8 departments  EDITOR's NOTE - in France a Department is like a U.S. State).
Actions in concert with the services of the state, organization of the peasants and the ONG.
Actions involving the population during the proper development as we question our society.

EDITOR's NOTE - It is unclear what TAPOA, ONG and Cartenoir mean, but those could be researched.

Peach, as you well know the route to downtown Amsterdam from Schipol airport is by train to Central station. The picture could have been taken in relation to the arrival of teams in Amsterdam, not their departure. I don't think it guarantees anything about taking the Thalys.

   Times up!   The answer is Aran Island Ferries. which run out of Galway, Ireland.

Here's a blurb I found on the web:
Today I am taking you to Inishmore the largest island of the Aran Islands group new Galway. From Ros a Mhil Quay you can choose from 2 Ferry Companies "Aran Island Ferries" and "Aran Islands Direct". There are also Ferries leaving from Galway. The ride from Ros a Mhil to Inishmore takes an hour and costs 25 Euros per Adult. It’s worth going for just one day but try to catch the earliest Ferry out. But if you can stay over night or even longer - pubs stay open as long as they want since there is no police on the Island to shut down places. And if there is police on one of the ferries the whole Island will know to behave. To get around on the Island we chose to bike (10 Euro for one day if you are a group of 4 or more you can maybe talk to them to get a rebate...

It looks more like a statue of a mendicant monk. I found one here (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=445022747&size=o), somewhere in Osaka. The beads, robe, etc. are similar, but the hat is all wrong; close, but no Cohiba.

Shannon airport is the closest to Galway and pretty small for an international airport.  It would be about an hours drive on the opposite side of the road too.  I would imagine that they went out to Connemara for the donkeys. Lots of peat out there.
Its beautiful and wet. ;D

The ferry and the tandem bikes (there's a rental shop--Aran Bike Hire--right next to the pier) would seem to argue for Inis Mor (Inishmor), the largest of the islands. But I can't match any terrain. Inis Mor is a very rocky place--stone walls everywhere.

So retro convertibles are the entry vehicles? I can see palms in the background; if we can read some of the shop signs we may be able to pin down the start city.

The intro shots of them being driven in the convertibles is definitely from Hollywood.  I think they are on Hollywood Blvd or could be Sunset.  I think I spotted the Guiness Book of World Records museum in the background.  I think I saw a vidcap some where.  I'll take a look.

I'm not entirely sure.   It's been awhile since I was up in that area but when I first saw that picture it reminded me an exit off the 101 freeway that takes you to Hollywood Blvd/Highland interestection.  I recall seeing a lot of construction going on in that area.  there is an exit off the 101 freeway that takes you down Highland Ave which curves before you get to Hollywood Blvd before you make a right onto Hollywood Blvd.  I think you exit the 101 freeway at Cahuenga Blvd and that merges with Highland Ave.  Then you make right onto Hollywood Blvd where they would pass by the Guiness Museum.

In the pic they are making a left onto another street it appears....and the street they are turning on doesn't appear to me a major street so i'm confused.  Could they be turning onto an on ramp for the freeway?

  I'm bored.  Just tying up a few loose ends, regarding the "gong".  According to this blurb on the web, the Longshan Temple in Taipei has a gong.

Longshan Temple was built in 1738 by Fujianese immigrants as a branch of the original Longshan Temple in Fujian Province. It was started in 1738 and completed in 1740. During 200 years the Mt. Longshan temple has gone through many construction works and renovations. The main entrance opens only during the festive celebrations therefore usually all enter from the temple gate - right side gate. Entering the temple it’s worthy to look at many Buddhists making an obeisance and offering reverently something to sacrifice, while saying the sutra prays to Buddha. In the courtyard just on the left from the palace you can see an incense burner that carries an interesting sculpture - "gruff lifts the temple angle". Both sides of the courtyard there are also a bell tower and a drum tower. Early morning you can hear gong strikes, in the evening beating of a drum and taking sutras are the Buddhist meeting reminder. While arriving to the palace and leaving, you can see on the right wing of the palace very many Buddhas sculptures. Some people say that the numerous gods are gathering to the Mt. Longshan temple for an office meeting. It’s a very pure and good place. So why not come here? Address: 211, Guangzhou St., Wanhua Dist, Taipei City 108, Taiwan R.O.C Public Transport: MRT - Bannan Line - Longshan Temple

Just throwin' this out there.   ;D

I think this is the statue (source page (http://picasaweb.google.com/akwawka/OsakaMay2007/photo#5098747894078333266)). It's somewhere in Osaka. (for bonus points, search the album for "relaxation of dog's gallery."  )
Oh you found that darn Monk! Fantastic Slowhatch! I was all over Shotoku-taishi! Very nice btw!

And Boingo those Victorian little buildings are often seen in the UK and are usually called Garden Follies--makes me think Ireland somewhere...
Thanks peach it gives me something to shoot for    :yess: so! gazebo! of sorts!

I think it's in Japan somewhere. A little searching at Symbols (http://www.symbols.com/encyclopedia/32/325.html) lead me to Tomoe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomoe), a Shinto symbol that can also appear in kamon (family crests--more info here (http://www.jko.com/portal/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=81)). There's a similar design found in the Kishiwada museum (source photo here (http://www.flickr.com/photos/kawakatoose/34181629/)).

The ferry and the tandem bikes (there's a rental shop--Aran Bike Hire--right next to the pier) would seem to argue for Inis Mor (Inishmor), the largest of the islands. But I can't match any terrain. Inis Mor is a very rocky place--stone walls everywhere.

I have discovered following up on Slowhatch's excellent find that Dourtenga department is part of Koulpelogo province. Or charter planes maybe as roads can be impassable in the rainy season.

Just 2 weeks after TAR's visit--the TAR curse struck BF with severe flooding displacing over 93,000 people and causing tremendous losses of homes and crops.  The area is still devastated today.

If we are looking for Bosnia, we will find it very close to Dubrovnik. I recall in 30 years ago going back to Dubrovnik from northern Yugoslavia via Zagreb. The train went through Sarajevo at 3am. It was a beautiful place then and for the 1984 Winter Olympics and I regretted that I never saw it close up. Sarajevo is the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina and is only 60 miles form Dubrovnik.

I saw the picture labled as ''Bosnia''.. It might be but I'm somehow not sure.. But as in Bosnia there is many hils and vegetation looked like it.. I say there is a 80% chance that it is in fact Bosnia... ANd anyway its 100% sure that they went into Bosnia because to go from Split and Dubrovnik you have to pass through Bosnian territory in a city called Neum.. If you have any questions just email me

Peach, I would like to take exception with the location of the circle you have drawn on your Co-op Map
http:// TAR 12 BF co-op.jpg The circle there was done by somebody else and is centered on Morbihan. The circle we need is centered on Dourtenga and that requires it to be centered on the "e" of Volta Blanche.
Title: Re: *intro flashs /a mish mash of sorts*
Post by: georgiapeach on October 28, 2007, 01:14:41 AM
That's the map for the co-op--not us! I think the thing is we have the screencap for the co-op? Are we 100% sure we are going to Dourtenga and not this co-op? They seem to be "relatively" close to each other.

Let me know and I'll figure it out when I update the MAPS section though, okay?

Peach may I say that if you look back onto Page 5 then look to the photo of a turtle shaped building, well you may have already gone through this lol, but at the bottom of the photo it says Bad Boy Building so I looked it up and it came up with this:

A self-confessed architectural "bad boy" early in his career, Italy's Renzo Piano shows few signs of mellowing with age.

The son of a builder, he vaulted to fame with bold designs like Paris's Pompidou Center and recently made his mark on Rome with a performing arts complex known as "the three turtles" because of its rounded, shell-like shape.

And it is in Rome, Italy and we are talking about Florence, Italy

But how many have broken vanes like that? We'd need some luck, but we might be able to find it.
As for the far-leaping, that looked a little hard on the heels.  An "amazing" version will probably be arranged.

That's the kind of creative thinking we are talking about! But unfortunately in this case I think "bad boy building" was just Boingo's pet name for it?

And i think we definitely have it here as the coffee house in Boboli Gardens--check out the video here...

That house gable pointed roof is an unusual form for a Dutch windmill so we may be able to find that by a regional style?

And I JUST cancelled my trip there scheduled for in two weeks ---or I could be tilting at windmills too!

Have at it (http://www.molendatabase.nl/nederland/index_e.html). A searchable database with pictures of each one, google mapping, etc. The bad news: there are thousands of "molens."  :groan:

If we are all trying to match windmills....

This one is actually pretty unusual for a Dutch one--see how it is straight up and down and doesn't flare out at the bottom?

And one arm has a break but that could have happened anytime so don't count on that for a picture match.

And the pointy roof is very different from most Dutch rounded ones.

I am going to be  :rotf: if this turns out to be in Lithuania somewhere....

Sarajevo is exactly the kind of place they would visit (especially if only 60 miles from Dubrovnik).  In addition to the recent conflicts & apskip's info above, the assasination of ArchDuke Ferdinand took place in Sarajevo...the flashpoint start of WW1.

Found this:

Lithuanian national Parks:

Aukštaitija National Park

This is said to be the most beautiful park in the entire Baltic region, and has also starred in a television version of Robin Hood, for obvious reasons. Designated in 1974, it is the oldest national park in Lithuania, and covers around 40,570 hectares on the eastern side of the country, near Utena. Over 70% of its area is pine forest, and contains some trees over 200 years old. There are around 80 villages you can visit inside the park, as well as some impressive lakes formed during the Ice Age, such as the tranquil Lake Dringis and Lake Tauragnas, which is the deepest lake in Lithuania. The park's rivers, including the Zeimena, Kriauna and Lukna, are also attractive to tourists, and provide beautiful routes to follow on hikes. The rivers are also rich in wildlife, including Canadian mink, if you're quick enough to spot them.

Paluse village is the tourist centre of the Aukstaitija National Park, and boasts an octagonal wooden church dating back to 1757. Paluse is the starting point for most of the tourist routes, both shorter and longer walks and a rowing-boat route along a system of lakes and connecting streams. If you don't want to camp in the park, alternative accommodation is available in romantic converted windmills.

For those interested in information about Jaisalmer, it is in the middle of a desert about 150 miles from Jodhpur, the nearest airport. I have been throughout Rajahstan except for Jaislamer, which I missed to a travelling incident that caused me to miss the overnight train there from Agra. For those interested in those pictures of a major body of water and coastline, you won't find it anywhere near Jaisalmer. the nearest coastline to Jaisalmer is at Karachi Pakistan.

I have to say that I am sceptical of flying in and out of Jodhpur with the accompanying 150 miles each way by road or rail to/from Jaisalmer. There is a small airport in Jaisalmer, but it is not open from April to September of every year. The flights from Delhi to/from Jodhpur are surprisingly good:

July 23 DEL JDH 1310 1400 IC421 Note this requires a 45 minute connection from the flight arriving from Frankfurt. This is incredibly tight, but if it works all is well (if it doesn't teams will not arrive in Jodhpur until the morning of July 24, via Ahmedabad).

July 24 JDH DEL 1825 1720 IC472

This shows that allowing roughly 6 hours round-trip by road or rail there would be about 22 hours for tasks and a pitstop in Jaisalmer.

The Train Jodhpur to Jaisalmer and return

I went to IndianRail for info on the train schedule currently in effect and very likely to have been in effect July 23 and 24, since it is the same every day. This Delhi - Jaislamer Express leaves Jodhpur at 0620, travels 301 km by rail (188 miles or a bit more than by road) and arrives 1300. After the workers have had a proper lunch, they depart Jaisalmer at 1600 and arrive back at Jodhpur at 2200. 5 hours 40 minutes or 6 hours, but look at the timing. It just won't do and is useless for AR12.

Very pretty Boingo!

What is it for--a ceremony of some sort?

Most likely associated with Buddhist festivals, Chinese New Year festivities, celebrations, etc.

Here's a description of "hot air" lanterns in Thailand:
The Kome Loy is a lantern that is similar to a hot-air-balloon. It is also quite similar to that of a normal lantern except it does not require 24 candles for illumination. Because the air lantern must rise up to float in the air, it must be lightweight, therefore, it does not have a bamboo cylinder inside. In order to send the lantern into the air, it requires a method to heat the air. This is done by tying a small bowl underneath the open section of the lantern. Oil is then placed into the bowl along with a cotton cloth. As the oil catches fire and commences burning, the hot air quickly travels into the lantern and it soon rises into the air.

It is believed that by sending off these lanterns an individual can send one's sins and bad luck into the air. Usually before the lantern soars into the sky, an individual will pray that one's sin or bad luck will be transported on the lantern and floated away high into the sky. Sometimes an address is left inside. The purpose of this is when the lantern come back down to the ground, and individual can follow an address and seek for money from whomever wrote the address. Or even sometimes, the maker will put some money inside the lantern. The purpose of the hot air lantern is to worship and pay respect to the Phra Ged Kaew Ju La Manee. An old legend tells that during war, these lanterns were sent into enemy territory and exploded.

I may be a little partial because of this (that's why I was away for the past couple of weeks):

But this:

Does look a lot like a stretch of the Danshui River biking trail in Taipei. They imported the biking culture from Japan though... Will research on rivers that width and follow up on that 101 lead.

Speaking of which: so obvious nobody bothered?

And a little something about Longshan (probably too busy for a race location):

Hmm there are nails around the rim, could this be a drum - taiko - instead? ??? No luck with gongs on online translators anyway, they turn up a word that apparently means red bean buns...

awwww...That is a nice thing for families to do. Having a small memorial like this probably brings the parents a lot of comfort.

Quote
Visitors to the many Japanese temples (such as the Hase Kannon Temple above) will find a quiet, secluded area where there is a shrine to children who have died as infants.  The parents either decorate the one large statue with some type of red clothing to help send the infant's soul on to the next level of being or can have a small statue placed into the temple on a personal level and decorate that statue.  In addition to the red clothing, there may be flowers, glasses of water, or some personal article that is meaningful to the parent for the child.

Almost all recycled, I'm afraid.

#1 is the Nevis Highwire Platform in Queenstown, New Zealand, TAR2.10.
#2 (yep, Slowhatch!) is from New Zealand, and appeared on the TAR2 intro flash.
#4, by Boingo, is recycled from TAR1.
#5 is Bangkok, used in TAR2's flash as well.

The People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison was shown in TAR2's flash as too, the Eiffel Tower one appeared in TAR4, and the Hong Kong skyline is from a stock footage sequence used in TAR2. The Mexico City monument was the very first route marker in TAR3 (the Angel of Independence).

Don't think that's Viaduto Santa Efigênia though, that one runs above a road...

Nothing much left, except the India (#6) one? Looks like the Red Fort (TAR1) to me...

Christchurch airport (http://www.flickr.com/photos/katakanadian/245512417/).

SLOWHATCH, I don't know whether your signpost is the other side of #2 of the screencaps (I think it probably isn't). Anyway, for #2, there is no possibility that the signpost is in Christchurch. Follow this logic:

1. Given the larger distance to Sydney(2169 km) than Melbourne(1682 km), the place must be south of Melbourne to make that so.
2. The only place in Australia of consequence south of Melbourne is Hobart and that is far too close.
3. That leaves only New Zealand as a possibility.
4. My world distance calculator gives these distances:
Auckland to Sydney 2151 km  Auckland to Melbourne 2614 km
Christchurch to Sydney 2123 km  Christchurch to Melbourne 2387 km
5. To Melbourne is too high, so we need something southwest of Christchurch. There is only one major airport that fits, Queenstown, where AR2 did some bungee jumping and other extreme sports. I haven't found a distance calculator that includes Queenstown but a rough approximation of how much the distance is to Melbourne should be in the right ballpark.

I have discovered a signpost in Auckland airport that looks totally different and it states Sydney 2159 km.
I have also not been able to discover any signpost at the Queenstown airport so far.
I have done an approximation of the lower distance that Queenstown would bring from Melbourne compared to Christchurch. It would be less than 400 km and I need a reduction of about 700km.
For purposes of validating what I was doing I tried Dunedin airport, southeast of Queenstown. It gave results of 2087 km to Sydney and 2253 km to Melbourne.
What I believe this shows is that there isn't going to be any airport on New Zealand that will be able to approximate the required 2169/1682 from the signpost. The only spot which would have those distances would be in the Tasman Sea off the west coast of the South Island of New Zealand.

Even the photog seems confused (see comments (http://www.flickr.com/photos/katakanadian/245512417/)). As far as the mileages go, Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington seem the closest matches (http://www.mapcrow.info/australia_pacific_travel_distance.htm). Queenstown is a little closer (below). OK, more searching then; thanks.

A mosque and an elevated train? I'd put my chips on KL. Is there enough resolution to read the sign lower-left?
Thats as big as it gets Slowhatch --KL? Darn

confirmed this is KL... monorail on the way from KL Sentral ...

I think was taken from Hang Tuah/Maharajale Station.

They might go to Merdeka Stadium (Indepedent Stadium). As an event on our 50 yrs Indepedent  this year.

" where they go" is speculated from the intro flashs, right?

Thought, "KL Monorail"'s flash is from the intro flash too ...

So far, no Monorail ride in KL in any previous TAR. So I speculated that TAR12 is coming to KL too.

Cabio TAR, that's an old Amazing Race editor's trick to throw in MANY screencaps of past Amazing Race sites to confuse you about where this Amazing Race is going. To sort it out, you have to look at a route and a timeline and apply those against actual sightings. The sightings in Dubrovnik and Taiwan leave only so many days in between. To get to Vilnius, Jaisalmer (or wherever in northern India) and Osaka leaves no time and no legs to go to Malaysia for what would be a record number of times(see one of my previous posts months ago, I can't remember which thread). Malaysia has been overexposed in past Amazing Races. It will not be in AR12.

OK ...

the most overexposed is India ....

well,

we still left location in between Dubrovnik and Taiwan  ...

it's might me India or any SEA ....

from SEA ... a lot of flight to Osaka are flying in night time and reach Kansai around 6 - 8 am ...

I hate this flight whenever Im going to Osaka ...

Sounds like a good story to me.  I suspect that your picture is one of the prized pieces.  The one that we have in the intro flash looks well drummed upon.  Not a museum piece that would be in the photo record.

If racers get to make their own beat then they would pound on the well worn drums.

I was looking around this area, I think it was Boingo? and I that were looking at Fort Aguada but never got a match it in either way but still I like this area, Panagi  (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=15.493774,73.827047&z=12&t=h&hl=en).

From this link: (http://www.goaenvis.nic.in/sanddistrbution.htm)

Caranzalem – Miramar (Mandovi estuary)                                                        BACK
A prominent sand dune belt is found backing the Caranzalem – Miramar beach. New dunes, presently low in height and capped by vegetation, are in the process of formation along the upper reaches of Miramar – Caranzalem beach; it terminates against the wooded hill slopes of Cabo promontory. However, sand dunes are progressively being destroyed. At Campal, due to severe erosion, the primitive beach no longer exists, except for a small portion near Panjim city. Instead, a sea wall, almost 2 km long, has virtually replaced the beach; this concrete / stone wall is placed in the intertidal zone.  :cmas5 The opposite Nerul (Coco) protected beach does not show any significant dunes.

The problem being that no tourist is likely to take a picture of an ugly, yellow concrete seawall. Believe me when I tell you I've looked at 1000's of pictures up and down the coast.

Juhu Beach
Quote
Juhu is one of the most popular and posh beaches of India. This fizzing beach on the shores of Arabian Sea is the place where one can find the bungalows of Bollywood stars. This is also a favourite site for film shootings. Luxury hotels and apartments, which are on the southern end of the Juhu beach are regarded as favourite haunts for movers and shakers of Mumbai.

Juhu beach is not a very good place to swim as it is so crowded. Tourists can enjoy horse and donkey rides, dancing monkeys, acrobats, cricket matches, toy sellers etc. here. Versova, home of Mumbai's largest Koli fishing community is in the north of Juhu.

I can only say what I have before. I have believed that the tasks will be close to Delhi or close to Mumbai because the timing of the race cannot afford to go very far distant from those major airport hubs for arriving from a European hub and leaving for Osaka (or maybe Taipei).

It has fame from a book (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/chronicle/a/2004/10/31/RVG539E76V1.DTL&type=books):

The Last Song of Dusk

By Siddharth Dhanvant Shanghvi

Quote
They live in Dariya Mahal, an old house where an Englishman died waiting for his princely Indian lover to leave his wife and family and come to him. The Englishman left behind "a formidable stack of love letters written and never posted, tied with jute, smelling of lavender and sadness." Now the house tends to its sadness and waits for someone to live in it who can understand its story of heartbreak and loss.

I think what it was, was a Phil video Diary, i took screencaps incase they took it down.

Well, as someone with familial ties to "Daria Mahal," I can assure you that the owners are not Parsi, they are Gujarati. The bungalow was built by my great grandfather Shri Maneklal Chinai. This, if you will, is the "House of Chinai." This property has appeared in many Bollywood films.

Hey since were discussing this here ..
As far as I can tell the rains took a break between July 20th & July 27 in the Mumbai area so might we still have a second location ( like some of us are thinking) where/when were monsoons in India? But then again BVM lies so who knows?

BVM:The monsoon in India is really going to kind of put a damper on things and kind of makes it very humorous.

puddin, ancitipating that Christmas is coming, says "Hey since were discussing this here ..
As far as I can tell the rains took a break between July 20th & July 27 in the Mumbai area so might we still have a second location ( like some of us are thinking) where/when were monsoons in India? But then again BVM lies so who knows?"

The TIMELINE makes it pretty difficult to fit a second India leg in. Here's why:

Arrive India slightly before midnight on the beginning of July 23, almost surely in Mumbai.

Tasks around Mumbai will take at least the morning. Pitstop could begin before noon.

Flights go out after 11pm to Bangkok, with connection to Taipei if taking CHATEAU's route, arriving there July 24 between 1115 and 1155. An alternate is a nonstop Mumbai to Taipei leaving July 24 0630 arriving Taipei 1500.

The same flights go out after 11pm to Bangkok plus one at 1235am to Bangkok, with connection to Osaka, arriving there July 24 at 1900. There is a lengthy wait in Bangkok on July 24; if one day later alternate flights would arrive Osaka 1440.

I doubt that task completion would happen if in Taipei and we know anyway of the siting July 26(probably, maybe it was the 27th) at Taipei 101. So, we know in the Taipei case that it would not finish until the afternoon of July 26 at the earliest. With TBC teams could go to Osaka immediately and maybe finish up there that evening. That leaves the morning of July 28 to fly back to Taipei and get positioned for the July 28 CI12 afternoon flight Taipei to Anchorage. It does not leave any time for an extra leg back in India.

If we go back to the Osaka case, teams would finish their tasks by the late morning of July 25 and if a TBC go immediately on to Taipei. They would do tasks until about noon on July 26, when they are due at Taipei 101 for their siting. Afterward, they would have a 36 hour extended pitstop which would take them into the early morning hours of Jule 28, when they would be flying on CI12 from Taipei to Anchorage. This case is a lot logistically simpler than Chateau's backtracking, but that doesn't by itself mean it is right. In this case we would have one whole day which could be eliminated and devoted to a second leg in India. What we don't have is an available leg, as all are spoken for. the only way it could happen is if they compressed both Taipei and Osaka into the same leg. It isn't impossible, but I highly doubt it. Also, that would eliminate the pitstop after leg 10 and force that to be a TBC into the Alaska leg. That's a bit awkward.

The major issue on which this analysis is vulnerable is the requirement to fly our July 28 instead of 29th. This rests on some special information that has yet to be revealed publicly(it's not mine) about arrangements for teams on July 29 in Girdwood. My conclusion from that is that World Race Productions would not have chanced the late arrival of a transcontinental once a day flight, but would have assured that all final 3 teams were in Alaska the prior day (July 28). They could have elected to take the risk by setting up the course for departure from Taipei on the 29th(and arrival Alaska that morning), but I doubt it.

  ... now about that drum....

Just received an email from Jesse, an expat in Japan, with some information regarding our Japanese drum.  Thought I'd pass it along, FWIW.

Quote
Greetings. To be honest, I am not sure exactly how much help I can be for you, but here are my thoughts. Due to the design and color pattern, I would bet that that drum (taiko) is from a temple, as it is most definitely used in either/or Buddhist or Shinto rituals.

Osaka is not known for its temples or shrines (Kyoto, just 15 minutes away on the bullet train holds that badge). Nonetheless, in Osaka, to my knowledge, the largest temple is the ****ennoji Temple, and the most popular shrine is the Sumiyoshi Grand Shinto Shrine.

Temples and shrines are known for having intricate drums like that one - the drums are more ornamental than functional, actually. Another possibility (but much less likely) is the National Museum of Ethnology could have a drum like that; but again, I would think a temple or shrine makes more sense...If I had to choose just one, I'd guess the ****ennoji Temple.

Hope this helps and good luck with your search!

Jesse

I think we're on the right track, but haven't turned up anything solid yet.  Thanks Jesse.   :jam:

Boingo said upthread? that the horse farm was old but I can't recall why? So we have the drum and the sterno thingymajigs, unless we saw the sterno's and I missed them?

I don't hold out much hope for the candles or the pigeons on the fountain, because they're so generic; the drum is probably our best bet right now.

OK, forget that; the fountain looks like the Kabutar Khana (source (http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=329052357&size=l))

I was searching AOL videos as always and missed this by an hour, I think CBS put it up by mistake, yeah I never got to view it, and then quickly revised it.
I think what it was, was a Phil video Diary, i took screencaps incase they took it down.

AOL link (http://video.aol.com/partner/cbs/mumbai-revised/yVnDGPl7nDApkV6hqM0vWUo77pDa0yPC) (video won't play  :cmas3)

Can someone help me? I can't find anything about ladeling oil at a temple *what are they doing*? Maybe if we knew what it meant we could pinpoint the temple or area? They haven't been to Thailand since season 9, do you think they would throw something old into the introflashs to throw us off? Even then I don't recall this scene.

Here's a page (http://www.digitalmission.us/Buddhist.html) with a picture of a woman pouring oil into what's called a "floating candle." Different design, but maybe same procedure.

Thanks Boingo  :keeta: -- we have to start somewhere, maybe it will lead us to the right place? "Devil be gone!"
Get around
Both Sakamoto and Mt. Hiei are best covered on foot. For going between the two, you can use the Sakamoto Cable Car, which costs ¥840/1570 one-way/round-trip and runs daily from 8 AM to 5 PM once every 30 minutes. At over 2 km, this is the longest cable car in Japan and takes about 11 minutes for the journey. This cable car line was built in 1927 and refurbished in 1993. The European style cars have large windows with wonderful views of Lake Biwa.

A real pilgrim would of course scoff at mechanical contraptions and climb the mountain, which is fairly easy as this isn't really more than an oversized hill. The traditional route is a convenient path of mossy steps known as Honzaka (本坂), starting from Sakamoto, but it's still 500 meters (vertical) to the top. There are also many other routes, with numerous small temples and waterfalls along the way, but watch out as signposting (even in Japanese) is lacking. You may see monkeys along the way as well.

Konpon Chudō (根本中堂), the central hall of the temple, contains the Inextinguishable Dharma Light (不減の法灯), a fire that has been burning for 1200 years. There is always a monk assigned to tend the fire and chant sutras here.

I know that this is a difference in scale, but the most known Eternal Flame is at a Peace Memorial Site in Hiroshima, which is quite a long way from Osaka.

boingo, I have found some information on Buddhist Taiko Drums that might interest you:

from Buddhist Taiko
by Reverend Arthur Takemoto (BCA Reverend Emeritus)

The use of musical instruments, such as the taiko is common to the Buddhist tradition.

The uniqueness of Buddhist taiko comes from its being developed by Japanese American Jodo Shinshu Buddhists, inculcating the Japanese, Indian, American Indian, and Afro-American influences into its pieces. Because of this background, Buddhist Taiko is quite different from Matsuri Taiko (Festival Taiko) that is commonly practiced in Japan.

As mentioned before, it is not unusual to find a drum at a Buddhist Temple. These drums are called "Ho-ko" or "Dharma Drum." These drums symbolize the "commanding voice of the Buddha."1 Given this "meaning" of the drum, the expression of Buddhist Taiko is also unique because it becomes a way in which one can enjoy the Buddha-Dharma, or what is referred to as "Horaku (joy or delight of the Dharma)." In Buddhist Taiko, the drum, from its "Ho-ko" meaning, becomes the Buddha, the true reality of Namo Amida Butsu or the calling name of Amida Buddha that sounds throughout the ten directions of the Universe. The drummer becomes part of the Sangha or the body of "players" that despite their delusions or attachments to the world of birth and death (samsara) become able to hear Namo Amida Butsu together. The bachi, or sticks used to hit the drum, becomes the Dharma or the link between the realm of enlightenment and the human realm of birth and death.

Buddhist Taiko, then, becomes the three treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha working and revealing itself to us. Because of this fact, the joy that can be found in taiko becomes the joy of hearing the Buddha-Dharma. To perform becomes an expression of one’s joy and gratitude at being able to hear and receive that which is most difficult to hear and receive. It is for this reason that this joy, Horaku, is accompanied by a sense of deep respect and reverence. For example, one notes that the beginning of a performance often begins with the blowing of the Hora (conch shell). This signals the movement of one’s entering into the path of the Dharma (the voice of the Buddha-Dharma), and the performers will put their hands together in gassho with the bachi held between the thumb and index finger and bow with reverence and repeat Namo Amida Butsu.

On the other hand, however, when one disregards the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, disharmony and discord result. This is reflected in the performance. The performance becomes filled with ego, and the harmony that can be found in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha disappears. Hence, Buddhist Taiko represents the beauty and joy of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha working harmoniously, or represents the discord that can result when the ego works in opposition to the Buddha and Dharma and becomes more important than the Sangha.

As a means of Jodo Shinshu Buddhist propagation, the primary purpose and goal of each taiko player and the listener is to teach and learn the Dharma by being embraced in both body and mind to the three treasures of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.

:js:  Thanks for the info apskip.  Yeah, I was aware that every Buddist temple has a "drum" and "bell".  I have seen so many in the last few months that I have nightmares of taikos chasing me in my dreams.    Trouble is, there are a "gazzillion" temples in Japan.

I may just spend the rest of the week playing with the PLEN robot.   :lol3:   "Hey peach, where did you put the bluetooth remote control???"  ;)

God, I went to a taiko performance by a Japanese high school today - I wonder why!

Puddin's gakudaiko's on the right track - it's the biggest (bigger?) type of drum around, compared to the taiko, which is probably 'only' half a metre wide in diameter. So set your image searches to 楽太鼓 - we have three days left! :res:

What if our drum/taiko is so ornate that its enclosed in glass as a museum piece or on a display at a exhibit or something? I believe up thread we were talking about a reflection...maybe its glass? and why ours appears to be resting on a cloth is a mystery too. In all my searchs I've seen no such thing.
