I noticed that on the CBS schedule website, episodes with an orange/brown background are in HD. But Amazing Race is not orange, but grey.

The most interesting thing is that the airplanes were NOT blown...but nicely on little wire stands. Expect that each may have had a phrase, perhaps only a few with the RIGHT phrase?? ???

Clues are stuck in Phil's pocket. TAR 15 style again, no surprise elimination this time though. So i guess only the first 3 teams gets tickets on the first flight.. and maybe, just maybe.. the last team might get a small penalty or what?

So i guess Kisha/Jen, Gary/Mallory and Amanda/Kris should be the first 3 teams to find the paper aeroplanes?

#7 In this Road Block, Goth friends Vyxsin must find a compass at the bottom of a tank filled with stingrays, fish, and sharks as her teammate Kent (top right) looks on...

#8:  In this Active Route Marker, Father/daughter team Ron and Christina must sail a skiff across Manly Bay and retrieve the next clue from a buoy...

# 9: Cowboy brothers Jet and Cord make their way to the Pit Stop on Shelly Beach in Manly, Australia ...

and now we know that the circular objects were compasses...

I just find it funny that they are revealing so many details about the premier.  I mean, in that one promo they reveal the opening location and challenge, the first destinaton city, specifics of the Roadblock and the Active Route Marker (a new element?)  Have they ever given that much info ahead of time?!

I guess they decided they might as well put it all there, since RFF already has!

Edit: because an "Active Roadblock" is not the same as an "Active Route Marker", proving once again that I should not post after my bed time

Yes...they do release info sometimes when they know it is out there...sometimes just because they want to!

And I think it is Active Route Marker??

I think Active Route Marker is just an additional task that's not a Detour or Roadblock. I think we've been seeing Active Route Markers since the beginning, and the show won't acknowledge it or specifically call it that.

I think it was 8 teams on the first plane and 3 teams on the trailing plane.....but the planes got reversed by the emergency stop in Honolulu.

You are right.

Do Zev & Justin lose their bags even before starting the race? If not why the Globetrotter shirts?

PS: Will we then see Flight Time or Big Easy in Duck Whisperer shirts?

IIRC Zev and Justin did an event with the globetrotters team after TAR15, the shirts probably come from there.

The 2x2 introductory walk appears to be down 16th Street to me. Chateau may have a better idea, since he went out there.

I would think the episode title goes with the sailing task.

I agree we've seen route markers that required an activity to get the next clue since the beginning. But I've never heard it labeled as an "active route marker" before, but it does make sense, and should probably be used as part of the TAR lingo.

As to the clue on the paper airplanes; my guess is that the phrase is imprinted inside the fold of the top side of the paper planes, and the teams would have to pull down the paper planes to check for the right phrase. Whether they're able to pull the plane wire down and the paper plane stays on the wire if it's not what the teams are looking for, or the incorrect paper planes also get detached, I don't know. But the latter might explain why Chateau found those remnants on his day trip.

You can see in a couple of the caps the wire mounted paper airplanes behind Phil at the start line.

That does tell us something about how the start line task works (pull down paper planes on the wires to look (oor pulling them off the wires to look).

So, Phil says go........

Teams run past Phil, to the west to near Whitewater Canyone/Rock Mine Rd, to find correct paper airplane.

Run back to Phil to get clue envelope......

Go find backpack and get in off road vehicle to travel to where rental cars are parked.....

Likely spot for rental car pickup is sand and gravel company, across Whitewater Canyon from start line. Large open area for 11 team cars and associated production vehicles and easy access to I-10. There is a highway overpass and entrance/exit ramps located there.

Drive rental car to Park One near LAX........

Take shuttle bus to Qantas counter in the TomBradley terminal to book flight.....

Can you see in the back of those off road vehicles........they have a very deep box/bed on the back. They may drive them up for the 2x2. I just think they use them to leave the area. Look at all the sand where they start. Not good for cars.

It is hard to see into that box/bed from the front on shots. But it is only my speculation anyway.

http://www.kmov.com/great-day-st-louis/Phil-Keoghan-from-The-Amazing-Race--115737494.html?clmob=y

Its a nice TV interview with Phil, but more importantly, they show a clip of the starting line.  Phil is talking over the clip, so it is hard to hear but there may be something there.  I can hear him say, "the last team to finish this challenge will recieve a penalty" (followed by shocked faces) he continues talking, but I cant make out what he says.   Perhaps someone else can.

The last team to complete a challenge will receive a penalty. Before that Phil was saying something about "second flight".. that's all i caught after repeating many times.

And i heard something about an "automatic U-TURN"?? Then they zoomed out to Vyxsin's shocked look! I *think* the penalty is U-TURN??

Did somebody else hear about the U-TURN in the video too?

I heard, "The last team to complete this challenge will receive a penalty that could have a devastating effect on (their standing?) in the race. (The penalty for this?) challenge will receive an automatic U-Turn." (but that last sentence isn't gramatically correct, so the parenthesis are probably not entirely accurate.)

An automatic U-Turn doesn't make sense unless the sailing "active route marker" is in fact a Detour. We have pretty clear indication from the promos that the oceanworld task is a Roadblock.

Are there any other tasks that would be possible as a Detour option?

I am hearing

Quote
"THE OTHER TEAMS WILL BE ON THE SECOND FLIGHT"
(shocked looks) and then:

I'll see if I can separate that out...anyone know how to separate audio tracks?? ???

But there is something else...the LAST team to complete this challenge was receive a penalty that could have a devastating effect on the rest of the race. That team will receive a somethingsomething U-TURN.

Giving the last team an automatic U-Turn on a future leg makes even less sense. You are basically banking on the team that finished the plane task last to come back and make it through the first leg. Granted that its easily possible for a team to be last to the airport to not come last for the leg, but still, it seems odd that they would give a penalty from the first task to appear on a different leg.

An automatic U-Turn? So they had to do both detour (kangaroo and sailing task -- am I right?--) on Australia leg? :duno:

The sailing task was in Sydney, the Kangaroos were in Broken Hill.

If the penalty is enforced before they leave America then it may not matter because of the situation with the delayed flight in Hawaii.

A penalty enforced before they leave America wouldn't matter anyway because there are only 2 flights teams were on and the last team would be sharing a flight with at least 2 other teams anyway.

I'm more incline to think that the last team will receive an "automatic U-TURN" which is what we've heard.. on the first leg. And since Australia 1 is a TBC, the team will serve the penalty on Australia 2? But wouldn't it be better if they do a 2 hour premiere then? :duno:

This is what I think I heard.

Phil : However! The last team to complete this challenge will receive a penalty! ** Cant Hear This Part **

Phil : There will be an automatic *Blurry* U-Turn.

All Teams : Scared with shocked faces.

The 2x2 introductory walk appears to be down 16th Street to me. Chateau may have a better idea, since he went out there.

I would think the episode title goes with the sailing task.

Yes, I think you got it.  They are walking past a 'driveway' off of 16th Street that goes towards a line of wind-generators.  There was a big pile of ancient rubbish there and a clipped section of barbed wire fence that I may or may not have gone through to hunt for paper airplanes.   :snicker:

Each sailboat has 2 racers and 2 crew. I think that 18,19 is Mel/Mike. We just see Mike and one of the crew. Same in the photos of Big Easy....We see Big Easy and two crew. Flight Time is on the other side of the boat. You can barely see him in the first photo

Caps 33 through 35 are most likely from the midway check in point.

Peach, was that new promo above called Million Dollar Fails?

It was snagged from TV, so it had no title.

There's another one up on the CBS site called Million Dollar Fails. It doesn't have anything new that I can see, but I'll put it up if you want.

Unfortunately, Phil says a lot without really saying anything, a skill he has mastered over the years. They are greatly highlighting the Cowboys, Zev&Justin, and Kisha&Jen. Not sure if these are good things.

Also with this Automatic uturn stuff. Redskevin88 found an article said its the new NEL penalty

Never mind I found this on wiki

Quote
The Express Pass, introduced in the previous series, will return, allowing the team that places first in the first leg to skip any later task in the race. Additionally, the last team to arrive on the non-elimination first leg will be forced to complete a U-Turn in the next leg, performing both tasks of the leg's Detour.[8]

http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=12931037

that could possibly be the "last team" thing we hear!

Does anyone else feel like that the media is spoiling this season more than others seasons?  I mean, we practically know the entire first episode even without Coutzy's pictures.  In many press releases we have read the starting line task, the shark tank task, and more.  Plus the titles of episodes now with the location of the leg is new too.  Also, in interviews Phil has told some other locations that the show will go this season.

We always get some info in pre race interviews about locations and tasks, so prob nothing new.

But sometimes it does seem they give us what we have already spoiled!

And I will say again, I think the last team to get the start line task done is the one with the penalty...which may be slightly different than what the ABC article says...depending on whether or not Phil is on a MAT at the start line task....
Title: Re: TAR 18 Ep 1 "Head Down and Hold On" (Australia)

Rather than retype what I've said in other threads this afternoon, I'm just going to quote myself, if you don't mind:

The presence or absence pf a mid-point mat is not determinative of the presence of an uber-leg. TAR 6 didn't have one, TAR 9 didn't have one, TAR 10 had a mid-point mat that wasn't an uber-leg.  So that factor, and Phil's presence, isn't determinative.

Until recent seasons, it was possible to use the cash distribution point at the beginning of a leg to help identify uber-legs. However, IIRC, there have been a couple of instances where teams did receive additional money at those mid-points.

The more determinative factor seems to be the presence of multiple detours and roadblocks. Yes, we had the one leg with two roadblocks and no detours in Beijing, but if we focus on the total number of such tasks, then it becomes less of a hiccup.  But then, we've had both roadblocks and detours edited in such a way that they were presented on-air as if they were general "active" route marker tasks, so we can't always count on those.

But in general, the uber-leg has usually involved two detours and two roadblocks, with a midpoint where either Phil or the clue, without Phil being present, instructs the teams to continue racing. Whether the Manly midpoint introduces something different we'll have to see tonight.  Also, if Phil uses "the mat" and not "pit stop" that may be a clue that the uber-leg mid-point is being used to determine who gets the Express Pass and the automatic U-Turn. We do have to stop thinking in terms of "the mat" meaning "arriving at the Pit Stop." We've known since TAR 7 that the two no longer always mean the same thing,

I think it is very important we look at how Phil describes these thing doing his opening spiel to the Racers before he sends them off.  If Phil says "the mat" and not "the pit stop" then that, to me, is an indication that the Express Pass and the automatic U-Turn are not based on leg placement when they finish in Broken Hill. If the Automatic U-turn is in fact a new NEL penalty, which avoids a set up for an extra Speed Bump tasks, we'll likely know that sooner rather than later.
The bottom line is this, until we hear (and see) what Phil actually says and does, we're in the realm of speculation as to the new elements of the game for TAR:UB.  (Which is why I record these episodes, because someone has to be able to check what was actually said!) :)

I wondered this week if they would be focusing the promos so much on the starting line if Coutzy had not spoiled the rest of the leg for them. We've barely seen any footage from Sydney and I wonder if we will in the episode. They could spend half the time on the starting line task and the airplane issues.
Title: Re: TAR 18 Ep 1 "Head Down and Hold On" (Australia)
Post by: theschnauzers on February 20, 2011, 03:54:06 PM
The promos I've seen have been using Sydney footage since the cast announcement, but I think CBS expects that most viewers aren't aware the extent to which the first leg has been spoiled.

So I expect that we'll be in Sydney after the first 20 minutes. I'm not even sure the flight diversion will make it in, even though it turned the intended outcome of the start line tasks on its head. We'll just have to wait and see what the editors decided to do.

Thanks to Aintitcool's review (linked in the media section) they state that Mel and Mike take an early lead, so I think its safe to say they are the team that is first to complete the starting line task, they also confirm (what we have none for about forever) that it is a TBC leg.

And Damn why didn't I ask who was the first to complete.....

It seems to me that unless we're all wrong about the number of episodes, then thiere was not an uberleg. But two legs, with no rest period between pitstops. That is a new wrinkle, but one that's been developing the last few seasons as the show has dropped all references to the 12-hour rest period at pit stops.

Why?

Phil described the race as having 12 legs.

He described the winner of the express pass as the first to arive at the first pit stop, which did happen in this leg.

He described the beach location as a "pit stop" greeted the first ten teams as X to arrive" and the clue directing teams there warned that the last team to arrive "may" be eliminated.

So what we have is a regular first leg (with just a roadblock and no detour.

Conclusion: There is no uberleg this season, although WRP did a good job in emulating an uberleg in Sydney.

I also assume the penalty for taking two clues and not putting them back don't apply to the Buoy's as both Zev and Justin stag one each.

That's what I was wondering. I guess since there was a possibility of someone missing the clue it didn't matter? Also once they had the clue maybe they couldn't go back?

From The Onion A.V. Club:

The Amazing Race: Unfinished Business

Of all the competition-based reality shows, The Amazing Race probably benefits the most from the all-star format.  The first episode of any Race season is almost always a chaotic jumble, with 22 to 24 new faces and personalities to absorb (or even more in the case of the lamentable “Family Edition”) along with the usual airport and taxi cab intrigue.  That’s not a problem with tonight’s premiere of the season subtitled Unfinished Business—said business being actually winning the race, something none of the participating teams have done.  (I’m guessing The Amazing Race: All-Loser Edition didn’t test well with audiences.)  All the faces are familiar, although admittedly, some are more familiar than others.  For me, Amanda and Kris are virtually interchangeable with any number of bickering young couples from seasons past, but they’ve clearly been included in hopes of re-stoking their animosity towards mother-and-deaf-son Margie and Luke, who U-Turned them back in the 14th season.

Indeed, that season is a tad over-represented this time around; in addition to Amanda/Kris and Margie/Luke, former NFL cheerleaders Jaime and Cara and sisters LaKisha and Jennifer are back, along with my top rooting interest, writer/actor Mike White and his dad Mel.  But although quibbling about the chosen ones is part of the fun when it comes to these all-star editions—where are my beloved Brook and Claire from last fall?—the powers-that-be have done a decent job assembling a roster of rewatchable teams, including Harlem Globetrotters Flight Time and Big Easy, passport-losers Zev and Justin, and...well, I’m sure goofy Goths Kent and Vyxsin have their fans, too.

As scenes from previous episodes remind us of their fates, the eleven teams converge on Palm Springs, where stalwart host Phil Keoghan awaits, eyebrow cocked at the ready. Kent and Vyxsin announce that they’re looking for redemption, which means they’ve come to the wrong CBS reality show. They’re doing that on Survivor, kids!  Like Flight Time and Big Easy, Zev and Justin are wearing Harlem Globetrotters t-shirts, which is hilarious. Phil reminds us that the first team to arrive at the pit stop will receive the Express Pass, which can be used to bypass any challenge. But wait!  He’s got a few new twists up his sleeve. The teams won’t simply be given their first clue; they’ll have to earn it by wading into a field of flags and finding one marked with the airline name “Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services.” We armchair racers immediately realize this means QANTAS, but as usual, it takes the actual racers a bit longer to figure it out.

The first eight teams to find the flags get tickets for the first flight out of LAX to Sydney, Australia.  The remaining three follow on a flight 90 minutes later, and the last team to find its flag is hit with an automatic U-Turn, which will force them to perform both tasks on the first Detour. Naturally, it is the previously U-Turned Amanda and Kris who win this booby prize, so it looks like they’re toast right from the start. However, the first flight is forced to make an emergency landing in Honolulu when a passenger suffers a heart attack, and the three teams on the trailing flight (Father/daughter Gary and Mallory and Kisha and Jen, along with Amanda and Kris) actually arrive in Sydney first.  What a stroke of luck!  Except, you know, for the guy who had the heart attack.

The Roadblock involves scuba diving in a shark tank, finding a compass (actually more of a giant decoder ring), and using it to solve a code involving nautical flags. Right off the bat, it seems Bertram van Munster and company have heard the fan complaints about the challenge-free challenges of recent seasons, because this one is a real bitch. Only a couple of teams actually manage to solve the code phrase—”I am between the devil and the deep blue sea”—but apparently everyone is feeling pretty chummy this early in the race, and thanks to rampant sharing of information, all the teams are able to get their next clue.  All except cowboys Jet and Cord, never the two brightest bulbs, who haven’t even come close to solving the clue as the episode ends.

Yes, that means no teams were eliminated in this premiere episode. After riding a skiff through Manly Bay and plucking a clue off a buoy, each team meets Phil on the mat at Shelly Beach, where he hands them a clue and tells them to keep racing. Gary, Mallory, and their secret third teammate Jesus are first to arrive, so they get the Express Pass (and crucially, keep it out of the hands of Kris and Amanda, who would probably use it at their mandatory U-Turn). It remains to be seen whether the cowboys will be eliminated if and when they solve their clue, but I’m guessing the words “TO BE CONTINUED” mean they’re not done just yet.

Either way, Unfinished Business is off to a strong start. Here’s hoping the new twists and turns keep coming, and that the challenges continue to be both creative and, well, challenging. Cab drivers of the world, prepare to be irritated!

Stray observations:

    * In a technological advancement that’s at least two years overdue, The Amazing Race is finally available in HD. The flashbacks to previous seasons already look like they took place in another century.
    * Didn’t Kent used to spell his name “Kynt”? Maybe too many people were mispronouncing it in a non-family-friendly way.
   * For now, we’re just dropping in on the premiere episode, but if the people demand it (hint, hint), there’s a chance Race could join the regular Sunday night rotation. If that’s something you might be interested in, let us know in the comments.

Let's start a new thread?? :hearts:

And did everyone catch that the express pass can be used at anytime during the race.  No mention of limiting it like last season to the first eight episodes.  If true thats a mighty important prize.

Upon reaching what teams were told was the Pit Stop of Leg 1, teams were told that they were still racing, having completed one Roadblock. Gary & Mallory who arrived in first place at the mid-point were still awarded the Express Pass.

As I pointed out above, what threw everyone off is that for the first time, WRP is having two legs without a rest period at the pit stop.

While this emulates the uber-leg format, it is in fact not an uber-leg, where teams arrival at a mat (sometimes) is not described as a "pit stop."  And Phil clearly said the Express Pass would be awarded to the first team to arrive at the end of the leg, and introduced the mat location as a "pit stop."

I'll play devil's advocate: I think the first two episodes are one leg. At the Pit Stop, Phil said to each of the teams "You're the Xth team to arrive", rather than "You're team number X", which we have all taken to mean that the leg is over. If I'm remembering correctly, the mid-point of the Beijing double-leg in TAR 14 was also explicitly called a Pit Stop, which it was not. Phil also told the teams that they were still racing. I'm probably not forming as coherent an argument as I would like, seeing as how I'm very tired from all the excitement, but just remember that just because Phil says something is a Pit Stop doesn't mean it is one! (Amazing Race Asia has done this numerous times.)

If this is really a leg, then cowboys should recieve a penalty(speedbump or 30mins penalty) for coming last in this leg.

And it's 9 years almost 10 since he first appeared in season 2. I will never forget that leg as it was the Cha "shopping" leg that started in Hong Kong and ended in Sydney. This shot form Kent & Vyxsin's insider video "A New Approach" was taken here:  Southbound on the 605  freeway at the 105

Oddly, it was taken just past their opportunity to make the interchange with the westbound 105 which goes to LAX.  And they are still in the car pool lane.

This location and the direction they are headed puts them about 40 min from LAX Fly Away Parking.

There's a lot that goes behind the scenes at Wiki.
Semi-protected stops vandalism from anonymous users, but flame wars can happen though. Check the discussion page for some interesting statements.
Most political pages/biographies of living people are already semi-protected. The fans and the detractors, by clashing, somehow keep the page relatively neutral.

And if that all fails, Citation Needed.

The Cowboys are from southern Oklahoma, about 2 hours up the highway from me. This part of the United States had Spanish/Mexican influence for 300+ years before English speaking early Americans arrived. From Texas all the way to Southern California, this area has always had a very multi-cultural heritage. It is very common to say "Gracias and De Nada" as much as it is to say "Thank you and Your Welcome." It is no big deal, just habit and very common. I do it all the time too. If you want to understand a little more about this part of the world, then see if you can find a movie called "Giant" starring Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor....from the novel by Edna Ferber.

No, Charla and Mirna always said "rapido" whereever they went. But the use of rapido is pretty common here too.

As someone from a state that has an extensive Spanish population and who speaks a little Spanish, I also find myself using "gracias" occasionally - even when speaking to someone that may not be assumed to speak Spanish.  I think it is a more flowing word / phrase and slightly more "gracious" than "thank you" or "thanks".  Anyway, due to culture overlap, movies, etc, I think most people know what "gracias" means especially in multicultural countries like the USA and Australia.

I used to be a secondary school teacher teaching languages other than English in Australia. Although Australia is like USA, a multicultural country, younger generations are not interested in speaking any second languages. They totally hate second languages, nothing like USA where people like to learn a second language. The best curriculum and textbooks I can find are from USA. Australia doesn't have that much history hence no influence in speaking second languages. Unless the parents don't speak English, they will not be interested in speaking one. I have never heard anyone of Spanish or Italian heritage saying Gracias or Grazie to me. that's why I couldn't understand the cowboys speaking Spanish at first

GekKou, that area of the United States was controlled by Spain, then Mexico, and nearby areas controlled by France prior to becoming parts of the United States.

Spanish speakers, in other words, lived there before Americans came into that territory. The Texas of the Mexican Empire (prior to the 1840s) was larger and included parts of present day Oklahoma. Thus, it's quite understandable how some Spanish terms made it into everyday language.

I agree with the thrust of theschnauzers' comments. However, if there was no pit stop time lag, why did teams not get on the 620pm flight to Broken Hill? Also, why was there a greeter? Typically if there is a greeter then it's not a TBC. Phil promised surprises, so I guess having a TBC with a greeter is something new. I believe that teams find a HOH that works effectively like a pit stop.

I don't view it as a Pit Stop because as far as we know, there is no RB in this upcoming episode. There was also no Detour in the previous episode.

Mel mentioned in one of the insider videos that the getaway cars had Michigan plates; second season in a row for that.

They were advertising the 2012 Ford Fiestas. They probably got use of them free of charge straight from Detroit as payment for the plug.

The Michigan plates would mean that the vehicles were owned by Ford as the manufacturer, and not by a dealer. (The current Ford Motor Company is headquartered in Detroit.)
GM, Ford and Chrysler have changed their form of business entity as a result of their bankrptcy/reorganizations over the last few years.  I believe that at least two of them actually are LLC (limited liability companies) and not corporations, IIRC. It's a far different world when those three businesses were known worldwide as "The Big Three."

Just a question, when Phil awarded G/M with the EP, did he say it could be used anytime during the Race?

Anytime during the race, at no point during the episode either at the starting line or at the Pit Stop did he say anything about a limited.  In fact he stated, "You can use that before or during any challenge you don't want to complete on the race.  Anywhere on the race, it's going to give you a major advantage."

Hey guys...

According to Zev & Justin's blog, the first words in the clue was

ROUTE INFO: FLY TO SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA AND TAKE IN ‘A SOUTHERN SWAN ON THE ROCKS’.

Does this mean anything...?

If you look at the first post in this thread, you will see this:

Quote
ROUTE INFO/DETOUR?: Domestic train from airport to Circular Quay and on to Harbour Bridge; collect clue at tall ship outside Waterfront Restaurant (The Rocks at Campbell's Cove)

RFF's very own spoilers spoiled a lot of this leg.  As I recall, though, the clue at the tall ships (Southern Swan) was edited out of the actual episode when it aired.
