Title: Future Switchbacks
Post by: SamualDude on May 16, 2013, 01:46:24 AM
So Season 22 featured 2 different switchbacks and it has become evident Switchbacks will continue to appear in future seasons but the question is what tasks would you like to see return as Switchbacks? For me I have three tasks I'd like to see return as Switchbacks firstly being the memorable meat-eating roadblock in Argentina, Secondly the memory challenge in Alaska and finally the memory challenge in Portland. What switchbacks would you like to see?

I would love to see the Unused/Unaired Detour choice from TAR 19 Belgium.

It remains one of my biggest TAR questions ever.....

Actually the detour was between the Bodybuilding Task that all teams chose to do and the Tintin task they did the next leg.

no more please, I want to see switchbacks rare. Or else WRP might just create a new race clue called 'Switchback' that will appear every leg -_-

but please for future future use:
- TAR5 philippines plow
- TAR6 xian key
- TAR 7 argentina meat

I haven't watched all seasons of TAR, but based on what I've watched, I hope these return as Switchbacks:
- TAR 15's Eat the Wasabi Roadblock in Japan
- TAR 16's In the Trenches or Under Fire Detour in France

TAR15 Farmer's Game/Farmer's Dance

Please, no. Not memorable at all, at least for me.

I haven't watched all seasons of TAR, but based on what I've watched, I hope these return as Switchbacks:
- TAR 15's Eat the Wasabi Roadblock in Japan
- TAR 16's In the Trenches or Under Fire Detour in France

I would say no to this one as well. Memorable but not classic TAR. Too manufactured and fake. A second time would only make it worse.

But I agree that the TAR 6 lock Roadblock would be good, as well as the TAR 7 meat Roadblock and TAR5's Lagen wall climb.

Hm...as for TAR 9, how about the crickets Fast Forward? Or perhaps the epic final challenge involving the flags. For TAR 10 we could revisit the Great Wall climb, the Detour or Roadblock from Leg 2 (both excellent tasks), or the Lug It or Lob It Detour. For All-Stars, it could be fun to bring back the Eat It Up or Roll It Out Detour.

TAR 17 leg 1 coracle task is one of those tasks that had potential but the teams were a little too far apart on that leg.

It'll never happen but I would be happy if they brought this task back :-[

We kinda did have a switch back to the lock task.. i thought it was really similar to the tree of love task in russia in S21 but future switch backs i would love to see S12 finale  memory task.. its one of the most plausible tasks and can be used for many seasons to come..

I would also love to see some unaired tasks

S1 Leg 1 roadblock
S1 Vatican City Fast Forward.
S10 Leg 7

Also this could be an awesome switchback but put it as a finale memory task
S10 Leg 9 Make Music Detour: Imagine the Final 3 Rapping about eveywhere theyve been. Tests Their memory, creativity, and possibly physically (making a dance to go with it) Maybe combine it with some props that appeared on the race and a few decoys

I say...
TAR7 Leg 3 roadblock (eat four pounds of a traditional Argentinian feast)
TAR12 memory task  :hearts:
TAR16 Leg 5 detour (pigeon & morse code) + u-turn
TAR17 Leg 1 roadblock (watermelons) :hearts:
TAR20 Leg 3 detour (harp & watermelons) and roadblock (bottle dance)
TAR20 Leg 9 roadblock (Bollywood dancing)
TAR22 Leg 1 2nd roadblock (sandcastles) :hearts:
TAR22 Leg 7 detour (brains & brawn)

I'm pretty sure about the watermelon roadblock.
btw, is this a speculation thread or a wishlist?

Season 2 leg 7 in hong kong .. they should have a switchback for the detour choice in hong kong which is wishing tree or herbal tea
the wishing tree should have a switchback ... only oswald and danny used the choice.. so... a tar season should go to hong kong and have a leg there.. then in the next leg visit the wishing tree, make a wish ( as a task ) and then fly to the next destination

TAR 6's padlock in xi'an was a perfect challenge just before the final pitstop of amazing race 6. they should clearly do it again
TAR 10's tomato challenge. but this time they should make it as a roadblock so all teams have to do it
TAR 13's paint party in india. very good road block where kelly or christy struggled.
TAR 17's cicrus detour in russia was epic. the detours were both equally challenging.
TAR 18's country measuring roadblock. it was very cool, maybe they'll do it in a different small country

Just do anything in Andorra!!!  :gaah:

I'd like to see the Plow task return and maybe taxi driving in Japan. I think tasks from the early seasons are less likely to come back due to how quick many of them were and how focused on the trip TAR was. Now the focus of the show seems to be on the tasks more than the places.

TAR23's over, and if I were to choose which tasks would fit in for a future switchback, they'd be:
rb1A
rb1B
dt2
rb2 (unmemorable)
dt3 (I love this one. :cmas9 )
rb3
dt4
rb4
dt5 (I love this too, esp. with the w-turn. :cmas16 )
rb5 (the randomness :cmas23 )
ff6
dt6
rb6 (If memorable, then we might see it again. :cmas10 )
dt7
rb7
dt8 (unmemorable)
sb8
rb8 (I like this, but probably unmemorable.)
dt9
rb9 (The Anklung! My favorite task (to watch) for the season. :cmas23 :xmas110 It will probably be a switchback after 15-20 years/seasons.)
rb10 (not memorable enough)
dt10
dt11
sb11
rb11 (The robot building rb! My 2nd favorite for the season. :cmas23 :xmas110)
rb12
memory

My wishlist, comments, and possible improvements! Far into the series's run, I actually like that each season has one or two Switchbacks as a nod from the earlier and earliest seasons.

S03:
Vietnam - Detour: Basket Boats/Basket Bikes [The bare bones of the tasks is already great, maybe a farther route?]
S05:
Russia - Roadblock: Caviar eating [As an improvement, maybe more caviar?]
Philippines - Detour (one side): Plow [Probably make it as a Route Info task since the Fowl detour is unknown]
S06:
Hungary - Roadblock: Spicy soup eating [Make it spicier!]
China - Roadblock: Lock and key [The task already have an amazing mechanic]
S07:
Argentina - Roadblock: Meat feast [Already a great endurance task. Maybe add veggies?]
S08:
Costa Rica - Roadblock: Red coffee bean search [Maybe they could make it just one big pile of coffee beans instead of separate ones]
S10:
Vietnam - Detour: Over/Under [This detour is all in the wind. The harder it is, the better this task would be.]
S11:
Argentina - Roadblock: Mail search [If it's not a returning seasons team, maybe letters from family and friends? Search through a larger mailbag, of course.]
S12:
Burkina Faso - Roadblock: Camel milking [I'd be more surprised if they could visit this country again.]
S13:
India - Roadblock: Festival of Colors [Change the way they have to search for a clue and make it more confusing for the teams.]
S14:
Russia - Roadblock: Run in underwear in the cold [Maybe as an added difficulty, they don't let the Roadblock performer wear clothes for the rest of the leg.]
S15:
The Netherlands - Detour: Farmer's Game/Farmer's Dance [Again, all in the wind. And cold. :)]
Czech Republic - Roadblock: Kafka telephones [This task already had a gradiose feel to it. Make the racers search for a full phrase instead of just 'FRANZ'.]
Las Vegas - Poker chip counting [One of the amazing shuffling tasks in the finale]
S17:
United Kingdom - Roadblock: Watermelon catapult [The looming danger of a watermelon face plant, how would teams react? :)]
Russia - Detour: Classical Music/Classic Cinema [An almost perfect detour, the judge just made it so wrong.]
China - Roadblock: Hong Kong fake food search [Another memorable needle-in-a-haystack task]
S18:
China - Roadblock: Dinosaur puzzle [The most amazing task of the season in my opinion, and the most shuffling occurred here too, I think.]

Hello everyone.

What tasks from past TAR seasons do you think would make the best switchbacks for future seasons? If possible, try to think of tasks that would be exciting to see again, even though you already know how to get past the task.

Here are examples of what I mean from TAR 23:

The choir task in leg 6 would make a good switch back, as it was innately difficult; while the robot task in leg 11 would not, as we already know the solution, and anyone repeating it would know about the mistake Leo & Jamal made.

Feel free to discus.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Dinosaur RB from Season 18 Leg 5 again.  This was a pretty hard task and it really made a few teams struggle.

Or the Chinese Zodiac RB from Leg 4 - The one where they had to search for the 12 wooden charms with the animals of the Chinese Zodiac, and then place them in mythological order.  I think that was what the order was based on anyway?  ???

Here are examples of what I mean from TAR 23:

^^^ This could work if they used a different robot design, although I guess it wouldn't really be seen as a switchback then?

It's not a compelling task at all tbh, the main thing that made the task good were Brooke and Claire. It would possibly bring more rating though b/c the original became a viral video.

Leg 1 roadblock
Leg 2 roadblock
Leg 2 detour
Leg 3 roadblock
Leg 3 detour
Leg 4 roadblock
Leg 4 detour
Leg 5 detour
Leg 5 roadblock
Leg 6 roadblock
Leg 6 detour
Leg 7 detour
Leg 7 roadblock
Leg 8 detour
Leg 8 roadblock
Leg 9 hotel ARI
Leg 9 roadblock
Leg 10 roadblock
Leg 10 detour
Leg 11 football ARI
Leg 11 roadblock
Leg 11 detour
Leg 12 roadblock1
Leg 12 roadblock2

Sadly, the tasks this season aren't as interesting as those in the past seasons. :(

I think this All-Stars season could have done a Switchback (or at least a rehash since they didn't go to Argentina) of that Roadblock from the first All-Stars where they had to find and read out loud a letter from a team in their first season (lol...Susan & Patrick basically insulting Rob & Amber).

But I suppose with so many Season 22 teams and three-peaters, it wouldn't work as well.

As for future Switchbacks...I'd say digging for scarabs in Egypt from Season 5, if it's ever safe enough to go back to that country a second time. The one that Marshall & Lance never finished.

Anyway, repeating my favorites again,

1. Watermelon task, TAR 17
2. Hungarian soup task, TAR 6
3. Fake vs real food task, TAR 17
4. Jig or Pig TARA, TARPh, TARAus
5. Swimming to Pit Stop, TAR 6
6. Sandcastle task, TAR 22

TAR25 is done, so... :cmas23

Leg 1:
Compass and digging roadblock

Leg 3:
Sheep ARI

Leg 7:
Kart racing roadblock

Leg 8:
Maltese sport detour

Leg 9:
China cups detour

Leg 11:
Sidecar race detour
Coconut products delivery roadblock

Note that not all are switchback worthy, but these are tasks that I would be glad to see again. :xmas49

Do this and change it to be a Roadblock, with the only flag is the one on the end of the pole, and probably this task will be the task with the most amount of teams quitting Roadblock. :cmas32:

I don't want legendary challenge like Watermelon or Ox is broken is switched back. Because those are too memorable and the switch back will be underwhelming. Like season 25 Ox is broken, it's kind of boring.

Pretty much the only reason why the watermelon RB was memorable was because of the accident that happened. If it didn't happen, it would probably have been an unmemorable task.

The Watermelon has to happen though. They'll have to use that accident as flashback, then reuse it as a (possibly boring, but still memorable) task.

I hope they do a Finale Memory Challenge like this again.

Spot the places they have been to, but at the same time, test their short term memory and allow no notes to be taken, and finding their clues in a huge area of items (in this season; containers)...

BUT, I would really like them to have a small task like TAR 12 which they have to complete after they are done.. other wise it gets really predictable and straight to the point who wins after finishing the memory challenge first.

TAR1 Searching for marked location from Eiffel Tower [OK, maybe I am just thinking of the part of Karyn yelling "LENNY!!!!"]  :funny:
TAR6 IKEA Counting Detour
TAR7 Mendoza Meat-eating roadblock
TAR12 Camel-milking detour in Boulkiemdé, Burkina Faso [but the country probably isn't that safe now]
TAR12 Final Roadblock [can be in any location]
TAR21 Hello/Goodbye Roadblock [perhaps they can use words such as "How are you" or "Thank you"]
TAR25 Singapore's China Cups detour [can be in any location]

TAR 25 memory final roadblock challenge need to be reused over and over. The challenge is tested everything on physical (running to find the right container), long term memory (remember the city in order) and short term memory (remember all the numbers in order without using any single note).

My picks for TAR26:

Leg 1 Syncing Steps detour (as an ARI?)
Leg 2 Share detour (as a speedbump? )

Leg 3 Tree detour (as a roadblock?)
Leg 5 Stein & Stack detour :hrt:

Leg 6 Win By a Nose detour
Leg 7 Track & Pack detour :hrt:
Leg 8 Work & Play detour :hrt:

TAR27:

Leg 3 Horse or Carriage Detour
Leg 7 Ship or Skip Detour
Leg 9 Cans or Candy Detour
Leg 11 Roadblock in Macau

Some of the tasks this season are nice, but compared to other seasons, this one feels like average or below average. I would prioritize some of my previous switchback wishes over this.

Title: Re: Future Switchbacks
Post by: gamerfan09 on May 08, 2016, 05:42:58 AM
I really don't like Switchbacks because everytime we've had one, it has failed catastrophically (best done was TAR27 and even that was stretching it).

I do like though, some fun nice little touches to earlier seasons locations (the TAR3 Switzerland Fountain on 28 <3 Mika on the water slide lol <3), but nothing overboard like repeating tasks.

You know what they say, repetition of things you already know is pointless and lazy.

That said, we need another #WatermelonGate-esque task to go viral. Really.
Title: Re: Future Switchbacks
Post by: Platrium on May 08, 2016, 11:12:18 AM
It'd be interesting to see a switchback in an all-star season wherein a returnee team who performed the task before was eliminated by it.

For example:
Tiffany & Krista and the Leg 11 Roadblock in Macau
Cameron & Darius and the Leg 3 "Adrianna" Roadblock :funny:
Zach & Rachel and the Leg 9 Salt Roadblock
Tim & TeJay and the Leg 8 Pole Detour in Malta (as a roadblock? :grins: )

I'd expect teams to do better if they encounter a switchback task they had troubles with before, unless they're a Mika-esque racer. :ascared

TAR28:
Colombia 2 Roadblock
Geneva Detour
Armenia Detour
Georgia Detour
Georgia Roadblock
UAE Racing with Camels Detour (as a Fast Forward)
China Roadblock (as a Final Task)
China Electric Unicycles Detour (as a Roadblock)

My main wishes are still:
TAR22's Sandcastle Roadblock
TAR17's Watermelon Roadblock
Title: Re: Future Switchbacks

My list of desired "Switchbacks"- Okay, these are more along the lines of flashbacks like Mika's waterslide tantrum, but I would love to see how a newer group of teams would handle some situations from a few years to a decade or more ago.

I nominate:
Season 1: A return to the Sahara Desert (Paul & Amie were hopelessly lost in the middle ofnowheree with only a grain of luck to help them find the Pit Stop oasis and not a mirage)
Season 2: The fatigue-curing tea concoction (Dragged a caring Mary & a nauseous Peach down to tears and exhaustion in Hong Kong)
Season 5: Eating a giant bowl of caviar (The fish eggs sent Nicole into "restaurant clinic" and proved to be Charla's incredible feat)
Season 6: Consuming spicy Hungarian fishermen's soup (Degraded Jonathan to eating his own vile and made more than 10 million Americans turn their head away from the TV)
Season 11: "C U, wouldn't want to B U" mail (Mirna caught the infamous lead against the destined-to-win Rob & Amber at this Roadblock and took them down "singlehandedly" without a Yield or sabotage)
Season 12: Respect the donkey (Carried Ari & Staella's lead down to the first elimination of the season)
Season 15:
• Farmers' Game and Farmers' Dance (As both Detour options required brawn in the circumstance, Maria & Tiffany were left in shambles after going back-and-forth only to find out they failed miserably)
• FRANZ (Flight Time was put on hold and dropped in this telecommunication Roadblock that confused him out of the final three)
Season 17: "They Don't Call It 'The Amazing Race' for Nothin'" (Claire was almost sent to the ER in this catastrophic catapult malfunction)
Season 20: The Bollywood dancer disaster (Bopper spent an incredibly dedicated amount of time just to master a dance that even a sacrificial Fast Forward couldn't save them in the following leg)

TAR7 Leg 3 roadblock (eat four pounds of a traditional Argentinian feast)
TAR12 memory task  :hearts:
TAR16 Leg 5 detour (pigeon & morse code) + u-turn
TAR17 Leg 1 roadblock (watermelons) :hearts:
TAR20 Leg 3 detour (harp & watermelons) and roadblock (bottle dance)
TAR20 Leg 9 roadblock (Bollywood dancing)
TAR22 Leg 1 2nd roadblock (sandcastles) :hearts:
TAR22 Leg 7 detour (brains & brawn)

I'm pretty sure about the watermelon roadblock.
