They're standing at the Phuket bus terminal (compare the signs in the background; for some reason Mapjack linking isn't working). The bus goes south to Hatyai; maybe the elephant ride is close/enroute?

Wow good spot on the bus! I believe going through Hat Yai is either the only way or by far the quickest way to get to Bangkok. Hat Yai is southern Thailand's primary transport hub.
Also I'm willing to bet that one of the twins says the title quote in reference to the all the locals that will be staring at them!

You can experiment with different transport options at this site (http://timetable.asia/geo/PP166310034). The last 443 bus of the day is at 21:30 and the fare is about 11 USD. (Btw, "we have to get on that bus" is a VO; it's probably the 443 but they could be talking about the bus to Bangkok)

I dont know if my speculations are accurate... i was wondering based on the map...
1. Traveling from Ko Panyyi ( i don't think that this will be the starting line) ... to a bus station directly to hat yai... i think the nearest and easiest to go is in phangnga or krabi... if they will go to hat yai... cause it follows more directly than Phuket, but i think from phuket to hat yai is good... if you can imagine the map... they will travel by bus from phuket to hat yai in curving direction passing phangnga, near krabi, trang and into the songkhla region...
2. There might be possibilities that the starting line might be not in ko panyyi (either in phangnga or phuket)... or near to it in order to go to hat yai... racing to hat yai is about 150-200 miles either phangnga or phuket... if by bus... in boat... it is less than 180 miles...
3. Hat Yai - bangkok... by bus is about 450-500 miles....
4. And hat yai, songkhla to bangkok.. is way too cool... to travel.. from nearing the southernmost part to the more central part... with more curving direction...
5. The elephant transportation might be somewhere along Songkhla or northern part of krung thep... ( i just miss the Elephants in Chiang Mai... my favorite place)
however, it is just my speculation...

But jungle/rain forest elephant riding sure isn't happening there!! :lol:
Interesting to see how fast and well production pulled these two legs off, due to the unexpected and last minute route change! A nice long bus ride for teams would buy them some time....

Ahmm... i think my speculation might be this.... the Elephant Transportation might be in hat yai... where they will go to either a house or a temple or a group of people... before they will be in bangkok... because the departure might be in the night time... to take a bus from phuket to hat yai...

Liz and Marie said in the preview said they couldn't afford to buy "another ticket" I think they may think they were not allowed to take a bus and got off because it looked like it was about to leave.

Look at these bus schedules. They often say 1st class, 2nd class, etc. for the rides. I bet the "fear" is that the TAR restriction on 1st class air travel may have been misconstrued. :duno:
A team could take the 1st class ride and somewhere en route decide to bail. :groan:

From the bus station... There is an increase the chances that liz and marie... made a mistake because of the bus they take, getting a ticket in 1st class rather than the 2nd class... The bigger point there is.... How come Liz and Marie had problems in the money?... in my own side of my mind... i think it is in the bus station that they paid 1st class rather than 2nd class... and found out that they need to get a 2nd class bus, which if they will take the risk to get into that 1st class bus, that will a critical mistake... I think that their money for the Bangkok leg might be around $50-70....

Baloney! I beg to differ with that judgment. Just look at a road map of Thailand. Hat Yai is quite east and a little south of Phuket. It takes 6 hours by bus to get from Phuket to Hat Yai and when you arrive you are farther from Bangkok. From Hat Yai to Phuket you take route 4 through Krabi and then continue on route 4 mostly west to Phuket. From Phuket you go north on route 4 and continue in that direction or branch off to other routes going north (such as 44).
So, I do not quarrel with your statement that Hat Yai is southern Thailand's primary transport hub. However, nonstop buses from Phuket will not be routed that way.

I'm inclined to believe that because we only see the twins doing it, their speed bump is to wash the elephant either before or after all teams have to ride them.

...Andy and Tommy made something like what the past teams in a detour leg of Season 9 in Bangkok... Decorate and Create a miniature Shrine for Buddha... And it seems it is different... I think it could be creating and decorating a miniature buddhist temple... :lol: :lol: or a switchback or something...
...In season 14, Jodi and Christy performed a speed bump to decorate an elephant with colored paint in the upcoming festival for the satisfaction of a mahoud in Jaipur, India leg... :)
... Oh my, the elephant leg is my favourite... i just miss the elephant leg in Chiang mai...

I don't think it is. Its much too small to be the Marble Temple and a visual comparison doesn't quite match up.

No...look at the columns down the sides. It is very different from the one with just windows. I looked at a lot of temples yesterday and could not spot this one.

This is definitely in Bangkok, the green and yellow taxis are a dead giveaway. Arriving from the South, buses stop at the Sai Tai Mai bus station in the West of the city, while buses to Khao Yai would depart from the bus station in the North, so we may be seeing an attempt to get from one to the other here..

The columns are round and somewhat more delicate...not squared.
There are three on each side of the door.
You can see another temple in the background. There is a red roofed building to the side.
Keep looking, but use your skills to rule out the majority...

There are no gray railings and the stairs on this one go to the sides while the one we search have the stair straight out.

I'm not one to give up easily, but I give up! I've looked at every 'Wat' listed in Wikitravel in the whole of East, West and North Thailand and haven't found it! Give us another promo please CBS!!

I think it's not a temple by itself but part of a complex, because we can see a pagoda at the back and another building on the side. It's probably a small secondary building. I tried the wat phra kaew because a large park surrounds it but I couldn't find a match.
By the way, if something comes up in CBSpressexpress please let us know because the site has become suddenly unavailable in other geographical areas.

I think a small building in wat phra kaew is very possible too kiki but I can't find it there either. It has the redroofed building and the other temples but...
I am wondering if this is somewhere TAR has been before? The would not have had much time to arrange for new film permits...so perhaps they are reusing an old one as a starting place to go on?? ???

Some subtle differences, though: the roofline, for example, and the grassy area and the fact that the promo temple seems to have fallen into disrepair, something that probably wouldn't happen to Phuket's preeminent wat.

I lived in Bangkok for 6 months and love the city. I lived in Banglamphu (don't ask me what possessed me to live there) and am pretty familiar with Phra Nakhorn.
A) The white and blue bus plies only Hat Yai to Phuket. It would take them about 9 hours out of the way. I think that's just creative editing. There are direct buses non-stop to Bangkok Sai Tai Mai Station (actually SW of the BKK suburb of Thonburi, but still BKK Metro area). A VIP bus non-stop from Phuket to Sai Tai Mai is the fastest way to Bangkok.
B) The temple is nowhere near BKK. BKK is inland. It's probably on Phuket Island.
C) The elephants MAY be Khao Yai. That's quite a hike from BKK. .
D) Pic 27 in Reply 26 is 100% sure Ekamai Bus Station off of Sukhumvit Ave in Downtown BKK. Buses going to Khao Yai leave from Mo Chit on the North Side.
E) Pics 7-10 in Reply 5 is 100% on Phra Nakorn Island (which is Khao San Road/Grand Palace/Wat Pho/UN Building) or Dusit (the Government District). The dead giveaway is the Tuk-Tuk in pic 8, which are banned outside of Phra Nakorn and Dusit (technically they're not allowed in Dusit, but sometimes they get away with it). Also, you might get a better idea by the red placard on pic 8. The placard is a campaign poster for the (now-ruling, then-challenging) Puea Thai Party. I don't read Thai, but sometimes it listed the local constituency candidates (which would tell you what district/location you were in), sometimes it listed election promises (like free tablet computers to students, promoting national reconciliation, etc). I think it looks like a platform/promises placard. The architecture of the buildings is another dead giveaway.
F) Pic 8 is across the street from the Grand Palace's East Wall, looking north. Definitely. That cross street is Thanon Saranrom, the street to the side is Thanon Saranchai. --- this I'm going to step away from after looking at Google Maps. The guardrail is throwing me off. But it IS Phra Nakhorn. That is definite. And I've been there before several times and it bugs me that I can't remember. That style of park is odd in Bangkok (with the trimmed hedges and tightly mowed grass) and it would be the style favored by the Royal Family.
G) Pic 9-10 are near Bangkok City Hall. This I'm less sure of though.
H) Pic 20 in Reply 26 I think is Thanon Pitsanulok across the street from Royal Turf Club of Thailand, close to the intersection with Thanon Nakhon Sawan.

According to Kartvelophile, this picture is between that task location and the bus station which aren't that far apart. Either they have to walk or the stranded banner indicated that Liz and Marie cannot afford a taxi. But since he identified Jeremy and Sandy as being in that area as well they probably all have to walk. This would give opportunity to become easily lost but it is not too far to walk.
Now that we know about this task I don't think the roadblock could be in Phuket. If it were they would have to do that there, take the bus to Bangkok, walk to the canal and then take taxis to some location like the national park to do the elephants (detour?). The canal thing seems like the first task they do after getting off the buses.

The reasoning is merely geometric matches to shadows, roof, trees, and hillside. Because I haven't found any other wat that come close in those terms. :jam:

I was just doing a post about Ton Pariwat too...but for totally different reasons.
Since we hear Sandy saying they could be last, that sounds like an end of leg comment to me.
So Bangkok should be last.
khao yai park is just too far away.
Ton Pariwat is in Phang Nga, and so is the exact match photo to the Wat screencap (except in better condition)
And the elephant seats match pretty well :lol: And there is a pool with a waterfall that looks possible.
So I vote for PitStart>> elephant riding and speedbump elephant washing as the first task with ?? RB in the water and another RB of spirirt house building at a temple somewhere in Phang Nga..Eddie says it's a temple in the song prak district of phuket, which is also part of Phang Nga.

LOL there are 2 roadblocks in this episode. the spirit one we are looking for is a "wat" followed by a 11-12 letter "c" word. perhaps a wat chan...something.

The Royal Turf Club pic, the contestants at that instant are walking away from the bus station. I would bet you money they got on the BTS (I believe 40 THB or 1.15ish USD per person) from Ekamai BTS (also known as the Skytrain... which I think is where Team Cha Cha Cha picked up Fern) and got off at either Phaya Thai or Ratchatewi Station. The ones near the Grand Palace probably got off at either Siam or National Stadium (National Stadium would involve a transfer). Ratchatewi and Phaya Thai are a block away from each other. So are Siam and National Stadium. The fare from Ekamai to Siam would be the same or slightly less than Ekamai-Ratchatewi. The ones near the Turf Club probably got info from locals where the Grand Palace ones probably looked at a map and decided (wrongly) where to get off.
The way the roads are laid out, that would explain why those teams are so far apart geography wise. To get from Siam Station to the Grand Palace walking is an hourish if you know where you're going and I went sort of fast. And I never walked Ratchatewi to Banglamphu. I always took a motorcycle taxi... however if you were walking, the Turf Club people are doing it the fastest way.
And BTW, Phra Nakorn on the Google Map is not Phra Nakorn as I use it. The Phra Nakorn on the Google Map is the name of a specifically named municipal administrative district... I would call what Google Maps says is Phra Nakorn "Banglamphu", which is the neighborhood where I lived. The way that I used Phra Nakorn was the island (bounded by the Chao Phraya and the canals). It's also known as Rattanakosin Island, but no one uses that name anymore.

And another thing: Elephants are everywhere in Thailand. I would actually think that the elephant task is somewhere between BKK and Pattaya, especially if we know they are at Ekamai Station.

And Forests for the elephants task like that can be seen anywhere 30 min outside of BKK Metro. Elephants, if arranged are everywhere (for tourists). Khao Yai's forest would probably be denser than that as it's primarily old growth.
The way I would see it is:
Route Info Task of building a Spirit house.
Go to BKK
Go to near Pattaya for elephants
Go to Thonburi (here they call it Bangkok Noi... Google Maps needs to start using the local names not the administrative names.)
Pit Stop somewhere in Thonburi/Phra Nakorn/Dusit (in my dream world, it would be one of the Royal Palaces in Dusit)

Note on Wats: If some rich Thai guy liked a wat, they would just use the plans and details to build a replica where they wanted. That was done rather frequently, especially in the past 100 years. There are limits, like Wat Pho and the hilltop temple in Chiang Mai are considered too special. Just because it looks the same doesn't mean it is the same. I still think the background is a shoreline and ocean.

The people that are walking by the hedges are actually very close to the Grand Palace. And the two pics that I said were walking near Bangkok City Hall are close to the Grand Palace as well. (Bangkok City Hall is a 15-ish minute walk to the Grand Palace)

When they were done, He Pingping, the world's shortest man, gave them their next clue. The second Roadblock on this leg required the team member who sat out the first Roadblock to put together a 96-piece puzzle and then give the puzzle to a group of fans in the bleachers. If the puzzle was put together correctly, the other side of the puzzle would give a seat number where the team would find their next clue.

I am thinking the elephant task may be a route info/speed bump, as TAR16 ep. 10 had the fashion route info.
Also, it was probably easier for production to make 2 Roadblocks instead of a Detour and a Roadblock on short notice.

AR16 is not even close to "the only other time we have had 2 Roadblocks in 1 leg". This should happen every time when there is a double leg and sometimes even when that is not so. Some examples are:
AR6 ep. 6 Berlin (hot rocket bungee) and Budapest (eat spicy soup at Gundel Restaurant)
AR18 ep. 12 Rickenbacker Marina move container into place) and Key Largo Jules Undersea Lodge ("treasure hunt")
AR7 ep. 8 Lucknow (search 600 metal boxes) and Jodhpur (both in cart, one to direct a camel)
AR8 ep. 10 Utah (herd cattle) and Wyoming (choose colored flag and golf cart, search for golf balls of same color)
AR8 ep. 11 Montreal (complete a catch on flying trapeze) and state park in Lewiston NY (place country shapes into correct position for 71 piece North/Central America jiqsaw puzzle)

The ONLY leg that I know of which restricted who could do the second ROADBLOCK in a 2-ROADBLOCK leg was AR18. I guess the question of what qualifies as multiple ROADBLOCKS in a single leg is definitional. There does not have to be only one valid perspective.

There have only been two occasions so far where there were two roadblocks between pitstops or mats with Phil on them. In TAR 16 the one that did the noodle roadblock could not do the puzzle one.

A lot of speedbump tasks are between the detour and the roadblock like the yoga in TAR12 and the coin flipping and the tea tasting in TAR16 and the tank washing in TAR17. In this leg it will probably be between the two RBs. So it would work with what I said.

apskip, Prophet and peach are right, only 2 instances with double roadblocks in an episode (meaning one hour leg.. but AR18 was a 90minutes finale...?) which are AR16 and AR18 and both instances, the racer who did the first RB cannot do the second RB. I know there have been instances where there are two roadblocks in a double length leg, but that does not count... there were two detours in the double length legs as well... if you get what I mean. :tup:

It says Bangkok on the board. So i'm pretty sure the twins are trying to catch a bus Phuket >> Bangkok. You can see it more clearly in the video.
Next, the preview sort of said teams had an elephant ride... "Bangkok style"... but another preview said as teams travel to Bangkok... with teams seen riding on the elephant. The logical thing would of course be teams go for an elephant ride in Phuket, then travel to Bangkok. This would fit in to the timeline nicely and satisfy both the fact that teams ride Elephants "Bangkok style" (why Bangkok style I do not know) and teams TRAVELLING to Bangkok. :lol:

Look at it this way. It made more sense for teams to be put on buses while Phil caught a flight from Phuket to Bangkok, so he'd be far enough ahead of the teams to get the stand-ups done, and make it to the Pit Stop before any teams.

One of them is also wearing yellow. Also the small glimpse of her face shows that its a twin. Anyone else notice this? It looks like they spliced the two together.

I'll buy in on this being the leg Phil referred to as having to be redone at the last minute. I'm wondering if teams would have otherwise flown out of Thailand from Phuket to a mystery country before they headed to Malawi?
It sure did look as if these tasks were certainly one that were easy enough to work in at the last minute with some contingency planning, but the pacing was unusual.
I'm not bothered by Andy and Tommy's talking about their faith, because it seemed to be something production brought up in their confessional interview, and wasn't something they were raising with the other Racers and the locals. It really doesn't seem to be a factor in anything that happened in this leg. The only reason I can think of to use it was because of Justin/Jennifer's mention of respecting Buddhism in the spirit house task and wanting others to do the same had those others gone into their church. Otherwise that was a odd editing choice.

Not sure if it's mentioned here but Ernie and Cindy originally were underpaying their cab by about $50, $150 USD roughly converts to 4,500 Baht. So much for all the insults...
I can't really blame Andy and Tommy for talking about their faith since they were likely asked questions about it hence why they brought it up, I just didn't like how the production team handled it. It's almost like they wanted to take a really likable team and split their audience over what some could deem as controversial remarks. Kind of like the Dumbledore controversy with Jeff during the latest season of Big Brother, maybe a ratings thing?

I didn't really get offended by Andy and Tommy's comments... they're right, as Christians they would have felt uncomfortable doing it but they are not wrong in saying something like "God is God" and He'll understand why they're doing that Roadblock. It's really probably just the edit.

4500 baht seems like a huge overpaymet to me, for what was a couple of hours and not much that mileage. I think they saw cameras and the prices went up. Interesting that no one negotiated a fee BEFORE getting in a cab? I never took one without a meter without having an agreement...
And yes , this was the "missed" leg,so really we have to give TPTB kudos for pulling a leg together on no notice.

I got the impression that the only reason Bangkok is the pit stop has to do with getting teams to Malawi.
It may be a leg was planned originally elsewhere in Thailand with the same pit stop, or that Bangkok was part of the last minute switch.
I wonder if we'll ever get the actual story.

After listening a few times, it sounds like "khlong song phraek." So whoever had Ton Pariwat for the elephants, step up and collect your prize. Also, the company name is probably "Anda Venture" (see here (http://www.thailandtriptour.com/phangnga/ton-pariwat-wildlife-conservation-area/)) I think if you zoom in with GE, you can actually see a few elephants near the kraal at the end of the road.

Let's hope the next one is better. I don't like these no skill, luck based legs.

1. The overwhelming favorite is that the 3 first teams to arrive in time for 430pm departure did not check alternate bus companies and Express Buses, which is clearly the kind that Marcus/Amani, Bill/Cathi and Ernie/Cindy all got on for 530pm departure.
2. I have seen bus breakdowns (they tend to wear their tires to the limit) on either AR1, AR2, AR9 or AR14. That could have slowed down the 430pm bus.

I'm going with the first option. The first three teams failed to check for alternate buses or Express ones. Amani & Marcus, Bill & Cathi and Ernie & Cindy all got Express buses for their, so they pulled ahead.

Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Tambon Song Phraek and covers a total area of 100,000 rai of shady flora. It also contains Namtok Ton Pariwat or known among the locals as “Namtok Song Phraek” which is 100 metres from the Sanctuary’s headquarters.

Judging from Phil's watch, it looks like Marcus/Amani and Bill/Cathi check in at 9.25am, and 4th place Justin/Jennifer at 9.35am. It's a pretty close fight, at least for the top four spots! Ernie/Cindy arrive in Bangkok just before 6.24am (from watch in taxi) and are at the fish at... I think 7.06am? They spent a lot of time getting to the Pit Stop!
And looking at the watches from last week's check in, it appears that the Phuket Pit Stop was a 24h one. Was the Pit Start on the mainland, where Google mislabels the settlement around the mainland pier Koh Panyi? (Or maybe the name Koh Panyi refers to both the mainland pier and the island itself?)

I think that's the case, at least on GE (notice how close the mangroves are) The village is Koh Panyi, and the port of Phang Nga is called Tha Dan. There's a row of piers but I'm guessing it's near the bend in the road by the water tower (kmz attached).

I am trying to map the Bangkok locations, and this is what I have got:

Do we have anybody who knows the area and can check this?
My main problem is that the distance from the new southern bus terminal to the Bangkok Noi canal is only about 7 km, and that should be walkable in a little over an hour. So either my locations are off or the twins were not only without money but also lost.

4500 baht seems like a huge overpaymet to me, for what was a couple of hours and not much that mileage. I think they saw cameras and the prices went up. Interesting that no one negotiated a fee BEFORE getting in a cab? I never took one without a meter without having an agreement...
I had the impression that the teams had cabs tied up for something like 4-5 hours (6 hours for the twins).

So teams arrived at either the Northern/Mo Chit Terminal or the Southern/Sai Mai Terminal, and getting to the Southern Terminal, as the name suggests, is faster as the bus doesn't have to cut through town. Looking at the video again, I've got Ernie/Cindy and Lawrence/Zac arriving at the Southern, and everyone else at the Northern Terminal. Probably explains why Ernie/Cindy jumped ahead of the first bus to leave Phuket!

Mystery time!
The counter from which Andy/Tommy, Jeremy/Sandy and Justin/Jennifer got their tickets listed its destination as Mo Chit (Northern) Terminal, but the places where each team got their taxi don't make too much sense. Andy/Tommy look like they boarded at the Mo Chit Skytrain Station, which is the closest station to the bus terminal but still more than a kilometre away as the crow flies. Jeremy/Sandy and Justin/Jennifer board their taxi in a place that looks nothing like Mo Chit.
We see Justin/Jennifer waiting, at 7.32am, at the lower level of the Siam Station (http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/6960225.jpg) interchange, which serves trains towards Wong Wian Yai or On Nut. The pair only check in at 9.35am, so we know they're headed from Mo Chit to the fishes, and not from there to the Pit Stop. That eliminates On Nut as a possibility (since going that way from Mo Chit doesn't require a change at Siam Station), meaning Justin/Jennifer are headed towards Wong Wian Yai.
We can assume they took the metro to save money, but where did they alight? Each station they take on the line takes them further away from the fishes... And what about Jeremy/Sandy, considering they arrive at the fishes the same time as Andy/Tommy, who presumably took a taxi straight from Mo Chit?
