The lady in this post , that was a witness at the Gas Works Park , here stated there were ' 13 cars and 12 teams' to jennblevins ( thanks to her excellent detective work ).
There were 12 cars at the start of TAR9 also ..and so on..yada yada

So how many teams are there -- twelve or thirteen? The articles don't agree.

There are 12 teams. The P-I is running a correction in Wednesday's paper. Sorry about the confusion.

Producers have a habit of stationing one more (i.e. Cars, boats, bikes, meals, drinks, hats, clue envelopes, etc) than the number of teams still in competition so that teams never can tell if they really are the last one or not (and most teams never stop to think that this is so.)

I think having the exta equipment (unlike extra clues) has a two fold purpose.
1. Obviously to keep teams on their toes.
but more importantly.
2. By having the extra equipment available for breakdowns. They usually have this near where you get that vehicle. So that gives you idea of where that replacement car is having to come from.
Otherwise, in some episodes the replacement vehicle could take a huge amount of time in some of hte remote locations and areas of the race.

well its "the day after tomorrow" and the site still isnt up yet. anyone know why?
