Woodside guy 'Amazing'

Tyler MacNiven might just be the most colorful contestant ever to pop up on "The Amazing Race."

The reality show premieres Feb. 28 with MacNiven teaming up with L.A. friend BJ Averell.

If MacNiven isn't familiar to you, he's the guy who made news back in 1998 when he was a senior at Woodside High School and embarked on a "Tyler for Student" campaign to get admission to Stanford University.

It didn't work.

MacNiven, whose family owns Buck's restaurant in Woodside, graduated from UC Santa Cruz in 2003 and garnered some print interest after he walked the length of Japan and made the documentary "Kintaro Walks Japan."

Now he's trying to use that chutzpah and travel experience to capture the race title.

"The Amazing Race" premieres Feb. 28 on CBS Channel 5 with a two-hour opener at 9 p.m.
Following a dismal season featuring families, "Amazing Race" returns to its two-person teams. Eleven teams will compete through five continents, with stops in the Middle East, Moscow and Sicily among others, to win a $1 million prize.

Where did the picture of BJ and the producers come from? (quick, get that woman some vitamin D! ) I didn't see it on MySpace; if you have to sign up to see all the pictures then I'm out of luck. Also, GoogleVideo lists the Kintaro video as 06 June 2005, before the application deadline; I have no proof, but I'm guessing these two got in through the side door rather than mailing their apps the traditional way.

'Amazing Race' Contestant's Plane Problem
Charges of sneaking on flight in '99 were later dropped
February 23 2006

'Amazing Race' contestants B.J. Averell and Tyler MacNivenLOS ANGELES --
B.J. Averell will be instantly recognizable come Tuesday, when viewers will see him and teammate Tyler MacNiven compete in the latest edition of "The Amazing Race." The two scruffy-bearded guys, instantly branded "hippies" by their fellow competitors, appear to be having a great time running the race's first leg.

Averell, however, was not always such a happy traveler.

In 1999, Averell, now 26, was charged with trespassing and disorderly conduct after sneaking aboard a Delta Express flight, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. The charges were later dropped.

Averell was a student at Harvard at the time, and he was headed from Boston to Philadelphia (he grew up in nearby Collingswood, N.J.) for Thanksgiving. He had a ticket for the flight but wasn't allowed to board because he arrived at the gate too late.

Somehow, he managed to sneak on, hiding in the plane's lavatory. He was discovered before the flight departed and escorted off by security.

Viewers can see if Averell and his teammate apply the lesson to arrive at the airport on time when "The Amazing Race" premieres on CBS Tuesday (Feb. 28).
