Houston couple to compete in 'Amazing Race' finale
03:20 PM CDT on Monday, May 9, 2005
From CBS.com
"The Amazing Race" is down to the top three teams and one of them is a couple from Houston. Uchenna and Joyce will compete against Rob and Amber, the former "Survivors" everyone loves to hate, and Ron and Kelly, the former POW and beauty queen. The winner will be decided in a two-hour finale Tuesday night.
CBS
Uchenna and Joyce have survived tough times outside "The Amazing Race."
"The Amazing Race" may seem like a cakewalk to Uchenna & Joyce, who are going through an extremely challenging period in their lives. Both worked for now-bankrupt companies that experienced highly publicized accounting scandals: Uchenna worked for Enron and Joyce worked for WorldCom. Uchenna and Joyce’s primary motivation for participating in the Race is to regain some of the closeness they’ve lost during these trying times.
Uchenna and Joyce have also been through a tough emotional period. After several failed attempts to get pregnant, they tried in-vitro fertilization, but it was unsuccessful. They desperately want children and say their numerous failed attempts has caused tension within their relationship.
Both are adventurous and ready to compete. Both have hinted that if they won the Race they would use the prize money for additional in-vitro fertilization procedures.
"The Amazing Race" finale can be seen on CBS/Ch. 11 Tuesday night at 8 p.m.

Former UO track star races into final episode of reality TV show
By Mark Baker
The Register-Guard
Have you been watching? "Amazing," isn't it?
All right, maybe not that amazing, but how often do you get to see a former University of Oregon athlete race around the world with his wife? And watch her get her head shaved somewhere in the middle of India ... and him eat mass quantities of some mystery meat somewhere in the middle of South America ... and then together outrun the "old couple" into a London park just to plant themselves in front of some English dude wearing a derby hat?
Your answer should be - "Not often."
But that's just some of the stuff that Uchenna Agu, a track star and male cheerleader for the Ducks in the mid-1980s, and his wife, Joyce, have been doing every Tuesday night on CBS since March 1. And you can watch the couple, who live in Houston, again this Tuesday in the two-hour final episode of the latest version of the hit reality TV show, "The Amazing Race." Uchenna and Joyce are one of three couples left who have a chance to win a $1 million prize.
Not that anyone's going to talk about it.
Taped last fall in locations from Peru to Argentina, from South Africa to Turkey, and finally in London, contestants are forbidden to talk about the "Race" until all the episodes that they appear in have aired.
The Agus did not return a phone message left for them on the eve of the penultimate show, and CBS spokeswoman Kim Sartori wasn't about to cough up anything. Sorry, you'll just have to watch.
Uchenna Agu, one of the best long jumpers and triple jumpers in UO history, is probably better known for being the lucky guy on the other end of former Oregon State basketball star Gary Payton's tossed gum wad in a 1987 Civil War game in Corvallis. Payton, who now plays for the Boston Celtics, accused Agu of being the one who hollered "Hookhead" at him, a label that stuck among UO fans for, well, forever.
Agu laughed and said he could not confirm or deny he made the infamous remark from the sidelines in an interview before the premiere of the seventh version of "The Amazing Race."
But that's not really what this is all about, is it? Of course not.
It's about whether Uchenna and Joyce will do all Duck alums proud Tuesday and bring home the moola.
To do it, they'll have to beat the favorites, Rob and Amber, the craftiest couple left in the race. They met on "Survivor" last year and are now engaged. Amber won the $1 million prize and Rob was the runner-up. The other couple left in the race are Ron and Kelly, best known for their constant bickering.
On last Tuesday's show, Uchenna and Joyce were in first place at the beginning, but chose to play it safe and take a direct flight from Istanbul, Turkey, to London, rather than risk the possibility of flying to Frankfurt, Germany, and trying to get on a connecting flight that would have arrived in London earlier, but only if they managed to get a seat. Both Rob and Amber and Ron and Kelly chose the Frankfurt route and beat Uchenna and Joyce to London, giving them the advantage. Meredith and Gretchen, still in the race despite being the oldest couple at 69 and 66, respectively, were eliminated after Uchenna and Joyce beat them to London's Pottersfield Park.
As for what to expect on the final episode, a preview showed Uchenna and Joyce getting a flat tire, and Joyce exclaiming: "No frickin' way!"
