1) With 13 teams, it is more expensive to transport all the teams from one place to another.
2) With the longer legs, that may be eating up budget.
3) Due to the writers strike, they may need more episodes than usual.

Excellent post, thank you for the perspective. I can't deny I would have preferred even just removing one of the Thailand-Vietnam legs and flying them down to Singapore, just to break it up.

But boy do I love this cast - lots of diversity.

Such wonderful age diversity on this cast. Almost half are over-40 (or almost 40 in the case of Todd & Ashlie).
