I feel like part of this recent quality has to do with Mike Bickerton and John Brunton (who always gushed in interviews about international stops) leaving the show for new endeavors after season 5 or 6. They had a lot to do with the heart of the show as we remember it, now there's just Mark Lysakowski who wants to throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks.
